Author Spotlight: notthetoothfairy day 2

Day 2: Recs!

Please recommend 3 - 5 of your own fic.

These are in no particular order. I love all of my “babies” equally (well, most of them – there’s some stuff I’ve written back in the day that wasn’t quite as good). You’ll notice four of these are multi-chapter fics and only one is the college!AU one-shot type of fic I usually write. That’s not because I don’t like my oneshots but it’s just so much easier to get attached to something you write over a span of months than to something you write in one or two nights, and I’m generally more proud when I finish something that actually took me so long.

Ed: Because this is deliciously long I have put most of it behind a cut but in summary we have:

With half a minute to spare, he runs towards the classroom door and arrives exactly as Miss July is about to close the door.

She raises a silent eyebrow at him, and Blaine gives him an amused look, clearly directed at his hair. Kurt shields it with his hand and responds with a playful glare.

Blaine and he have struck up… a wonderful friendship.

Which, despite all of its wonderfulness, is driving Kurt crazy.

Because he kind of wants more.

Who knew that back in April, when he saw Blaine slip and fall outside the main hall, that his eye was so good at spotting boyfriend material?

Because, really, that's what Blaine is. Pure boyfriend material.

If Blaine was boyfriend jeans, he'd be size Kurt.

 Tell us what else you love about the fic.

This is one of my favourites because I wrote it on a whim and inspiration just kept hitting. It takes place at NYADA, obviously, which I couldn’t get enough of on the show, so that’s a plus as well. I tried to make the performance studies aspect as realistic as possible while also putting those wacky Glee moments in there, so you have Blaine managing exams and a dance TA job, Kurt navigating his mid-semester transfer life that means he has to take dance with a bunch of freshmen and sophomores, Cassandra July being sort-of-not-really mean to Kurt, Kurt and Blaine practicing and falling in love and on their butts... :)

Also, what’s cool about this one is that I incorporated fake Facebook posts to make it more real. That was a lot of work, actually (especially because I changed them throughout the story about five times), but so worth it. Besides, the premise is really cute – both posting their crushes on the Facebook page but not knowing about the other’s confession. It just makes for a fun dynamic. I really enjoyed writing this one.

I also love Blaine and Sam’s friendship, so that features heavily, and the loft trio, of course. Writing Rachel, Santana and Kurt is the gift that keeps giving. In this one, I managed to incorporate something I always wanted to do after that one movie night scene with Kurt, Mercedes and Rachel on the show – Kurt’s roomies on their period.

Tell us what inspired you to write this.

That’s an easy one. A lot of universities have those “Crushes” Facebook pages where you can send in confessions and have them posted anonymously. My old college had one, and after reading through a few more Crushes pages, I came up with the scenario of Blaine posting a confession about Kurt singing his heart out, and with Kurt getting struck by the random idea of posting about the cute guy he watched fall down the stairs but didn’t catch the name of.

As for the dancing, research was necessary. I’m not a (good) dancer, so I used YouTube videos of partner dance moves to see what Kurt and Blaine would be doing in their dance sessions (besides flirting, hehe).

 TAKE A BITE OF MY HEART TONIGHT

Quick explanation: This is an Animorphs!AU, which means that a) there is a looming alien apocalypse to be stopped and b) the main characters (Blaine, Kurt, Tina, Sam, Santana and Brittany) have acquired an ability called “morphing” – they can turn into animals that they have touched, and while morphed, they can send out and receive each other’s thoughts. In this little snippet, Blaine is currently a golden retriever and worried sick about Kurt who went off on a mission. They’re “just” best friends at this point, which of course paves the way for an awkwardly cute reunion scene. ;)

Santana and Blaine have already morphed into human form and then back into animal form because so much time has passed, and it’s killing Blaine. He’s taken to lying down and just trying to drown everything out. Every once in a while, he will glance up and look to the part of the lot that leads to the street in hope to see-

Kurt. This time when he raises his head, he sees him there, Sam and Tina trailing behind him, looking unscathed enough from what Blaine can see.

<Kurt!> he exclaims, not quite sure if it’s audible to just Kurt or to everyone else, too, because he’s focusing on running towards him instead.

Kurt grins, and then gasps as the force of Blaine’s jump tackles him to the ground.

“Woah, Blaine,” Kurt says, laughing once he sits back up and runs his fingers through Blaine’s fur.

Blaine doesn’t answer, just hugs Kurt as much as physically possible in his current state, and licks Kurt’s neck and jawline as a way to greet him.

He only realizes how strange that would probably look if he was in his human form when Sam and Tina clear their throats behind them. He backs away a little, though he can’t stop his tail from wagging because he is so happy to see Kurt.

“Hi there.” Kurt’s cheeks are a little pink and his eyes don’t quite meet Blaine’s. “You’d make the most convincing dog ever, you know that?”

He can hear Santana chuckle in thought-speak and Sam and Tina are visibly stifling laughter, too. Blaine’s suddenly very embarrassed because in addition to their friends’ amusement, Kurt won’t stop blushing, and maybe, just maybe, he overdid the greeting a little bit.

Tell us what else you love about the fic.

This is the most AU-ish thing I’ve ever written for sure. I mean, alien apocalypse and shapeshifting? That’s pretty sci-fi. Not my usual style but so much fun to write!

Picking my favourite part for this one was very difficult because I have so many. I loved exploring Kurt and Blaine’s best-friends-to-lovers story with all the “normal” ups and downs (doubting, misunderstandings, hesitation, nervousness, happiness) but then also intertwined with all these supernatural elements of having to fight off aliens with their friends. The stakes were higher, the obstacles more complex. The actual plot was terrifying to write because I was determined to stay scientifically accurate (at least to a degree) about most things.

I had to do sooo much research. I spent hours on the Animorphs Wiki pages reading up on different kinds of aliens, and I even looked up what kind of animals are kept at the Columbus Zoo and then jotted down a few notes about which character would pick which animal for what reasons on their field trip to the zoo. All the while I tried to stay close to the original concept-wise but make the plot all my own and put in as much Glee canon as possible. It was difficult and challenging but easily the best fic-writing experience I’ve ever had. The detailed action scenes actually made me a better writer because I had to really think about how I would describe a certain movement.

Tell us what inspired you to write this.

I had the first Animorphs book as a kid and read a few more in the library and was suuuuper into the concept. I have to say that the actual story never really stuck but I loved the premise and the characters. I cannot for the life of me remember how I connected it all to Klaine but the first scene that I had in mind for this fic was one in the middle of the story where they break into a bear compound at the zoo and get trapped. I couldn’t stop thinking about that and then my mind started putting a lot of other things in the picture – Brittany’s Lord Tubbington morph, alien!Starchild, Kurt morphing into Pavarotti and being strangely into alien fighting whereas Blaine needs some time to get used to it… I couldn’t let it go and so I wrote it down. This was one of those stories where I really didn’t have a single clue where I was going with it, so I just wrote and kept vague notes about what I wanted to happen later on. I think I actually wrote more than half of it before thinking of how I wanted to end the story. It was all kind of intuitive and I’m actually happy it all worked out because I would have been really sad to see this one end up as an unfinished draft.

UNDER YOUR SPELL(ING)

Quote one of your favourite parts.

Of course, Kurt’s former self would have been embarrassed for days to be caught staring but he isn’t that person anymore. Embarrassment is a thing of the past.

Or so he thinks.

Because when Blaine catches him staring for the twelfth time, he jogs over to him, leans close and mumbles, “The red shirt clashes with your hair.” He grins. “It’s cute.”

It catches Kurt off guard, and he has to fight down a blush. He can’t just blush in front of people, for god’s sake.

“It’s cute that you thought that would be a good pick-up line,” he manages to shoot back, and Blaine throws another grin over his shoulder as he goes back to his exercise.

“It’s cute that you thought that was a pick-up line.”

Kurt stares after him, lost for words. Is Blaine trying to get back at him for denying he was flirting last week?

Ugh, he so is.

Apparently, embarrassment is very much a thing of the present.

Kurt doesn’t go back to gym class for the rest of the week.

Seriously, this was a lot of fun to write because snarky and lonely skank!Kurt and goody-two-shoes but sassy religious!Blaine are one hell of a combo.

Tell us what inspired you to write this.

This was a birthday/requested fic so the prompts I was given to complete this were the main inspiration. It was super hard to start (I don’t generally do well with prompts) but once I got going, the thing almost wrote itself. It felt super natural and flowy. I hope it reads that way too.

ALL I DO IS DREAM OF YOU (Vogue Verse)

There’s a loud rustling noise as Wes slams the newspaper aside.

“Blaine,” he says sternly, “you have got to stop losing your mind over this. Work’s more important, and you’ll never work in a place where everybody likes you, that’s highly unlikely, probably even statistically impossible. If that guy doesn’t wanna be friends with you, that’s on him. There’s four other interns, right? Be friends with them.” Blaine opens his mouth to say something but Wes shushes him right away and continues, “Now, your problem is that you’re overthinking this. So, I dare you to not think or speak of Kirk or whatever the hell that guy’s name is here in our apartment because it’s just not good to take work problems home with you.”

Blaine wants to protest but Wes’ eyes are fixated on him, eyebrows raised, head tilted. He’s trying to level with him non-verbally now. Blaine has seen him do it before in Warblers rehearsal; it’s his go-to “you all know I’m right” face.

He closes his mouth slowly, blinking at Wes.

Wes doesn’t blink.

Blaine sighs.

Wes smiles proudly – whether he’s proud of himself or of Blaine is unclear.

“It’s Kurt,” Blaine mumbles.

“Blaine!“ Wes groans.

“Sorry, sorry.” Blaine takes a sip of his coffee. “Just clearing that up.”

Tell us what else you love about the fic.

Besides the fun of writing an adorably sassy Wes as Blaine’s roommate and sidekick? Probably the fact that I finally got to write Kurt in the fashion industry (Blaine and he are both interns at Vogue.com and do not immediately get along), which goes along with the joy of writing Isabelle Wright as the cool and awesome but occasionally inappropriate boss. Also, paying close attention to what Kurt and Blaine wear in this particular story, writing Rachel in her canonical overbearing-but-sweet mode and incorporating one word prompt per chapter without fail (it was my Klaine Advent 2016 story).

Tell us what inspired you to write this.

I had a one-shot planned (and also published it later: Check-Up/Out) about Kurt and Blaine as Vogue interns, and then the first Klaine Advent prompt (“Audience”) somehow made me think of an interview situation with Isabelle. Not wanting to just copy from my one-shot idea, I twisted the original concept around and adapted it to a new premise with Kurt and Blaine both applying for an internship at Vogue.com but getting off on the wrong foot in the process. And because I realized I couldn’t say all I wanted to say with just that one prompt, I made it into a 24-chapter one-prompt-per-installment story. I’ve never written a full multi-chapter fic in a shorter time than this (I took a bit more than the 24 days but I was close!). What a challenge! Bring on the next round, Klaine Advent 2017!

EVERYBODY WANTS TO RULE THE WORLD

Blaine seems a bit distracted the next day in English. He doesn't even say hi. Kurt realizes that all this time he hasn't even given the fact that their siblings are dating much thought.

Should they be bonding over becoming uncles at the same time now?

What a conversation starter. So I heard my brother knocked up your sister. Welcome to the family.

Kurt shakes his head at himself and keeps just as quiet as Blaine.

Tell us what else you love about the fic.

This whole story is basically a rewritten season 3 with season 1 elements, of course with a focus on Kurt and Blaine (who are neither together nor friends at the beginning of this story) and the chaos that is their senior year at McKinley. It’s full of canon/AU twists – for example, I wrote Quinn and Blaine as siblings, which is an unusual but super fitting combination, once you think about it. I very rarely write Quinn, especially not her pregnancy story because season 1 isn’t often the focus of a Klaine story, so adjusting it this way made for a nice change. It also allowed me to intertwine multiple storylines and problems (Kurt and Rachel’s plans to get into NYADA colliding/falling into place with Blaine’s, Finn and the pregnancy scare leading to some very bad choices, Quinn / Rachel / Finn love triangle with Blaine and Kurt getting mixed up in that, etc. So what I really love about this fic is that I was able to reimagine season 3 and interweave canon with AU events.

Tell us what inspired you to write this.

A few musings about why Blaine and Quinn would make such adorable siblings, and, well – I couldn’t *not* write it, you know? And I promise, they do make super adorable siblings.

Author Spotlight: notthetoothfairy day 3

Day 3:

1. How long have you been writing Klaine fic? Do you consider yourself a part of the Klaine fandom?

I’ve been trying to write Klaine fic since 2012, approximately, but I never really got the basics (and the really good ideas) until 2014. Glee was almost over by then and I was only an active writer for most of season 6, so it all took off a bit late.

I do consider myself a part of the fandom and have done so since I joined Tumblr right around the start of season 3. I was merely a passive fanfiction consumer before then but after joining Tumblr, I started posting about Glee and Klaine, editing some videos, commenting on fanfiction and fanart, and eventually writing my own fanfiction – basically, I started interacting with other fans, and to me, that marks the beginning of my active participation in fandom.

2. Have you written fic in other fandoms or non-Klaine Glee fic or are you a Klaine only kind of a writer?

Funny you should ask because the other day I re-discovered some of my really badly written fanfiction called “The Royal Consort Diaries” on my old computer. It was a companion piece to “The Princess Diaries” (which I was obsessed with as a teen) and written from Michael’s perspective. :D However, those writings are only fragments; I never actually finished writing it. Apart from that, I was an active part of both a Harry Potter and a Lord of the Rings forum about ten years ago but I rarely wrote for those fandoms. So all in all, I’m pretty exclusively a Klaine writer.

3. What's your most popular fic(s)? (by whatever metrics you like) Why do you think people loved that story?

That would probably “The Saturday Morning Shift,” at least when counting the notes on Tumblr (on AO3 it’s “NYADA Crushes” but I already talk about that in my recs). I remember how I almost fell off my chair when I checked my Tumblr the morning after I posted TSMS because so many people had reblogged and liked it. I published that one mid-season 6, I think, and probably on a Friday night, too, so I guess a lot of people saw it while checking their dashboards on Glee day. ;) I’m super glad people liked this one because it was a spur-of-the-moment kind of story – I went swimming and was alone in the pool (except for the lifeguard), so I had a lot of time to myself to let my mind run away with me.

What did people love about this story? I’m actually not sure. If I had to take a wild guess, I’ll say (hope) that it’s a combination of Kurt as a hot swimmer, Blaine as a cute lifeguard, his adorable friendship with Sam and Tina, Sam’s desperate crush on Mercedes and the shy flirting between the friendly-verging-on-friendlier Kurt and Blaine. Did I miss anything, guys? :D

4. What fic do you wish more people had read?

I guess my Animorphs!Klaine/Animorphs!GleeClub fic is something that I wish more people would read because I am personally quite proud of it. I’m pretty sure most readers don’t really know what they’re in for with this one because maybe they don’t know Animorphs, or alien/sci-fi stories are not their thing, or the warnings about violence and death put them off. But at heart it’s a coming-of-age story. It’s about values and life choices, about friendship (Kurt, Blaine, Tina, Sam, Santana and Brittany are the core group of this fic as they discover their new powers and form an alien-fighting gang, with some other characters joining them later), about the journey from being best friends to friends who are crushing on each other to friends who tentatively try to be with each other, and about family. The alien apocalypse and the turning-into-animals powers are just the basic setting for all of these themes. So if you’re on the fence now, just give it a try (and if you’re worried about the warnings, I can tell you what parts to skip!). I promise I’m just super bad at writing summaries, and it’s actually a lot cooler than it sounds!

5. What’s a good thing that’s come out of writing Klaine fic? (Friendships? New skills? New understandings? New opportunities? Love?

This is such a good question. The first thing I need to mention is my incredibly amazing friendship with @a-simple-rainbow that stems from me being one of her biggest fans since day one and eventually reading one of her fics as a beta reader. We now beta each other’s stuff and are super close friends and I am so, so, so, so glad that actually happened because she’s wonderful and talented and a pure joy to be around. I love you, Rainbow!

Something else that’s come out of writing Klaine fics is that I am now more confident in my creative writing skills and truly believe that maybe one day I might write something original that people would enjoy reading. And of course I am learning so much in the process – my English got better by writing fic, my writing skills are improving, I am learning more about building worlds and characters and am able to appreciate the writing of others more by knowing how hard it is sometimes to create something with words.
