5. Do you respond to comments?

UGH, not as much as I should, and I used to be really good about responding to all comments, but presently my inbox on Ao3 has 4402 “unread” comments and I just… I can’t, it’s too overwhelming at this point with working two jobs. But I read and genuinely appreciate every single comment, even if I can’t reply to every single one!

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

Ah. That’s a toss up between Nothing’s Gonna Change My World and Through the Rift Series. In my opinion, the former, but I’m sure Any would beg to differ.

7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

Oooh, fun! Ummmm. Most of them have happy endings (both literally and figuratively). I guess the “happiest” ending goes to the crack fic I wrote for Any’s birthday seven years ago. Crack in the Fourth Wall

8. Do you get hate on fics?

Oh, you betcha. The first time we got a shitty comment on a joint fic, Any said, “We’ve made it!” Thankfully, when a certain newsletter was dismantled, the anti-destiel harassment died down. I/We still get the occasional “concrit” comment from readers who think it’s an okay thing to give unsolicited writing advice, and I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: Constructive criticism cannot exist in already posted fanfiction world, you aren’t being constructive or critiquing, you’re literally filing a complaint, leaving a bad review. So either embrace the fact you’re a shitty 1-star Yelp review Karen, or stop leaving concrit.

9. Do you write smut?

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

10. Craziest crossover?

I actually don’t write crossovers, but keep your eyes peeled! I recently participated in the CasDean Reverse Crossover Bang, and in a little over a week, I’ll be posting my Harry Potter crossover fic featuring art by the amazing @rezal-art!

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Not technically, or in a way that could be proven, but a very popular fic very much felt like a rip off of one of mine and Any’s fics, one that a well known author (a friend of the author of aforementioned rip off) made it a point to tell potential readers to not read the ending of because said author didn’t like the polyamory of it all.

Even funnier, that same author shortly after wrote their own poly fic. So, I guess personal preferences used to justify telling people to not read someone’s fic can sometimes beget a change of heart if it gets you more comments/readers.

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

Yes! Any and I have had a couple of our fics translated into Chinese, Russian, and Spanish! And we are here for anyone who wishes to translate any of our fics, just let us know and send us a link, and we will include it in the notes!

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. At this point, I prefer to not write alone. Any needs to stop allowing it to happen.

14. All-time favorite ship?

Okay, so… technically, it’s Destiel. It’s the only pairing that survived the end of its series. Dean Winchester and Castiel are my two favorite archetypes of characters and their specific dynamic transcends canon bad endings and any type of universe.

15. What's a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

I don’t have any! The last time I posted a WIP, it took me a couple years to finish, so I promised myself I would only post completed fics from now on.

16. What are your writing strengths?

Comedic scenarios and dialogue. I like the funnies and the speakings.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

DESCRIPTIONS. I fucking hate it, okay? Why can’t you all just know what’s in my damn head? I also have a toxic, codependent relationship with commas and sentence fragments.

18. Thoughts on dialogue in another language?

A little mixed. So, barring it being like… Latin, or a more archaic language that you use an unreliable online translator for or a language you speak, I believe for believable dialogue, you should have a friend or someone who can confirm/verify that the language is written correctly, otherwise, I vote you write, “they spoke in x language,” and interpret in the narrative. And no writing an accent in dialogue for characters where English is a second language phonetically! Like, authentic structure of a sentence, rhythm, or word choice is fine, but let’s not be offensive folks.

19. First fandom you ever wrote in?

Harry Potter over twenty years ago now. I’m an old.

“What of your declaration of being hands-off Jack? The plan itself stays within those guidelines. Well, mostly. Do you want to change your decision now?” She questions.

“I cannot let him die before he even has a chance at life, Amara. Plus, technically, it falls under fixing Chuck’s messes. He was the one who brought them into existence.” She smiles, picturing his serious face so much like his seraph father.

“I believe your dads would call that ‘splitting hairs’, would he not?” Fondness appears in her thoughts as she teases.

“The issue is, I’m not even sure he will last long enough to make it to the barn.” Knowing what is coming for someone she was once so connected to sobers her.

“Then I believe we will need to up our deadline, nephew. Are you sure this is what you want?”

“Yes. It’s the way it should have been had it not been for Lucifer. It is what my father had seen, and honestly, I miss them.” His sadness making its way through their connection.

“Then let’s finish this!”

Summary While en route to an off world colony, Dean Winchester crashes on what he believes is a deserted planet. When he meets the planet’s only other human inhabitant, he’s never been so glad to be proved wrong.

A love story that’s out of this world. Excerpt As they walk to the lake Dean feels a growing sense of anticipation, and the air around them seems to be charged with electricity. He’s pretty sure that has nothing to do with the planet’s atmosphere, and everything to do with the sexual tension between him and Cas.

They fall into a similar pattern to that of the previous day, with Dean watching Cas as he removes his clothes before undressing himself. This time he doesn’t wait for a prompt from Cas though; his hands are already unbuttoning his jeans as Cas dives into the water.

Cas breaks through the surface and turns to watch him undress, and he slows his movements to give Cas more of a show. He slides his clothes sensually over his skin, giving Cas tantalising glimpses of what’s underneath before revealing it fully. It doesn’t matter that Cas has seen it before; a fact that becomes blindingly obvious from Cas’s reaction.

His gorgeous blue eyes are so dilated with desire they're almost black, and his hands - that were resting lightly on the bank by the lake - are gripping onto the ground so tightly his knuckles are turning white.

Dean decides to stop teasing Cas and quickly pulls his boxers off, then jumps into the lake.

Cas swims straight over to him, a wry expression on his face. “Were you struggling to take your clothes off?”

Dean grins and runs his tongue over his teeth. “Oh no, I was just taking my time. But if you thought I was struggling, why didn’t you offer to help?”

Cas drifts closer as he considers his answer. “Because I was enjoying the show too much.”

Dean moves into Cas's personal space, until he can brush their noses together. “Well then,” he murmurs softly.

“Well then,” Cas repeats, his voice barely more than a whisper.

Time seems to stand still then, as neither of them move for a few seconds. Their breaths are mingling, and Dean can feel his heart rate speeding up. The water’s having an effect on his senses again, and he swears he can feel Cas’s heartbeat too, even though they’re not touching.

They gaze into each other’s eyes silently waiting for something to happen… and then it does. They both lean in at the same time, brushing their lips together softly at first, before surging forward to turn their gentle kiss into a passionate push and pull between them.

Cas immediately takes control; pulling Dean closer until he can wrap his arms around him, his tongue seeking entrance between Dean’s lips. Dean parts them willingly, and he instantly loves the feel of Cas’s tongue exploring his mouth.

Summary: As the star of the fantasy show Not Natural, Dean Winchester used to be a big name; at least he was before the show was cancelled after season five. Now he and the rest of the cast spend much of their time at conventions, reliving the glory days, and trying not to fall out with each other… or is it just Dean they don’t get along with?

When the fantasy world of the show suddenly comes crashing into their real lives, they’re required to help a group of angels who believe that the show is real, and that Dean and the crew are actually hunters. As their mission becomes increasingly dangerous, the cast must band together as they once pretended to do on the show, to stop Loki’s determination to destroy Heaven. This is particularly important to Dean, as his affection continues to blossom for Castiel, the angels’ enigmatic (and extremely attractive) leader.

Preview: She either didn’t hear him, or was set on ignoring him. She dodged past a group of men and women all dressed in the show’s classic angel garb of grey suits and white shirts, whose presence Dean completely failed to notice until they stopped him in his tracks. Goddamit.

Dean tried to skip past them, but the guy in front stepped right in front of him, blocking his way pretty effectively. Unlike his companions, he was wearing an ill-fitting trench coat over his suit, and his blue tie was slightly twisted. Dean took in the rest of his appearance, noting that he had the kind of wind-blown hair that Dean would like to run his fingers through, gorgeous pink lips, and the most startling blue eyes he had ever seen. “Dean,” he started, in a rich, gravelly voice, that was so deep it felt almost otherworldly.

Despite the attractiveness of the guy, Dean didn’t really have time for this, and he gave the man a firm, “Excuse me,“ before sidestepping him.

The guy wasn’t easily deterred, it seemed, and he tried again, “I must speak to you. It is a matter of supreme importance. We are angels, come down from Heaven, and we need your help.”

Realizing these must be the people who had booked him for tomorrow, Dean made a hand gesture indicating for him to lower his voice. “Whoa, whoa, is this about the gig tomorrow? Hammer out the details with my agent, and make sure there’s a limo at my house.” 

Dean couldn’t say why he did it, but he took hold of the lead ‘angel’s’ tie and straightened it. The guy said nothing, but he tilted his head and squinted his eyes at him. He’s fucking hot, but they’re a real strange bunch, he thought, glancing at the others, who stared back at him blankly. A limo is the least I deserve.

“Last time I did one of these gigs, they shoved me in the back of a Toyota,” Dean continued, giving the ‘angel’ a searching look. 

“Certainly, but-” he tried once more.

“And remember: mum’s the word,” Dean interrupted. Adding a “Shh, okay?” With a finger to his lips, he left to find Jo. He did not need these nerds talking to Sammy and the others, and pissing them off again.

He could hear them all repeating the word, ‘mum,’ as if it was some kind of sacred word, as he walked away. It was lucky they were paying him, because… wow! Weird didn’t quite cover it.

I had so much fun writing my @cdrcrossoverbang fic - a fusion of Doctor Who and Destiel - and I’m delighted to be finally posting it.

I was so happy to get my first choice of art for this bang, especially as it meant working with my dear friend @anyreiart. Thank you so much for the awesome art, and for being so supportive and helpful in developing the story. 💙💚

2021 - The Year of Fic...

While I have watched SPN a few times over the years (watching and rewatching as new seasons came out), I did not join the fandom until this year – this is (at the age of ‘older than most’) my first fandom, and I fucking love it here. Due to not being part of a fandom previously, I had also never read fanfiction until this year; and to say that I fell headfirst into the ocean of Destiel fic is an understatement.  I wanted to track my progress – I wanted to understand what I was capable of accomplishing in (less than) a year.  

While I can’t scream this from the rafters anywhere but here – I’m proud as hell of the number of fics and the total amount of fic I’ve consumed this year.  Of all the amazing authors I have found, followed, and screamed over – of all the stories (of the same two idiots) I have devoured and begged for more on, I know there are so many more stories to read and so many more authors to find.  

The 2021 Numbers:

I read a total of 222 Fics

Totaling over 11.3 Million words

I have learned that:

I tend to prefer AU’s (as evidenced below)

I love an author that can bring Dean to life WELL (he’s a tricky one, but I’m so Dean-coded, I get upset when authors don’t get him right, or over-do his issues – he has enough already!)

I like LONG stories over short one-shots (this doesn’t surprise me at all, as a high/epic fantasy reader)

I can get behind anything except A/B/O….I tried, but it’s just not for me. (I’ll try anything once...)

I am a Top!Cas truther, but have found a couple of instances where Top!Dean has cracked my top fics list…(I have no problem with Switch!fics)

Explicit or Fluff, either works, as long as it works with the story that’s being told

I’ve never cried reading a physical book (and I read A LOT) - but fics have made me cry/sob more often than I care to admit to…

I tried to start off by reading all the “big ones” – the ones that I had heard about all over the place (T&S, 4LW, 91W etc.), I’m sure there are so many more that qualify here (the mermaid fic, the hockey fic, the baseball fic, etc.) which I have also read – but I want them all, so please – please let me know your favourites.  What are the MUST READS?  There is no definitive list, everyone has different favourites, and it’s so hard to parse out what needs to go on the list to read.  I often found myself falling down small rabbit holes, which was fine with me (and often lead to me finding fics I’d never heard of, and some of them were spectacular).  

So, as a NEW fic reader, and a FIRST year of reading fic, wading through the LARGEST single pairing on AO3, here are some of my favourite stories/authors etc. (in absolutely no order, because I can’t possibly!) – but these are the ones I would generally tell everyone they need to put on their Must Read Lists (linked):

That’s only 10…of 222…Choosing only 10 was no easy feat.  I have fallen in love with so many of these authors, not to mention a ton that aren’t mentioned here.  Thank you to all fic writers for making 2021 tolerable! For a year (well, the second year really), where I could not partake in any of my favourite hobbies/activities due to COVID related nonsense, I’m glad that I was able to find a new obsession to keep me interested and excited every day. Further, thank you to the fandom for being a new and exciting place to check in on daily, for being a space where we can love these two silly boys with reckless abandon in every way possible.

Down-on-his-luck private eye Cas Novak gets hired by Angelic Studios president, Nick Vaught, to investigate a scandal involving an infamous literary character (Lit), Dean Winchester, and Vaught’s primary nemesis, Fergus Crowley. A devilish producer and prop designer who has his hands in every movie studio in Los Angeles. Crowley’s prop factory shares a wall with Lit Town, and worse yet, he owns the contract for every Lit. Every contract, that is, except for brothers Sam and Dean Winchester from the Supernatural book series. When Crowley is found murdered, Sam Winchester becomes the primary suspect and goes on the run. The villainous Judge Edlund vows to catch and destroy Sam, having discovered a means of killing Lits with a substance known only as “Pulp”. Desperate to prove his brother’s innocence, Dean demands Cas help him find his brother before the Judge does. Despite vowing to never work with another Lit after his twin brother's murder, Cas agrees. With a contentious start to their working relationship, Dean Winchester and Cas Novak begin to uncover an ever growing nefarious plot. Can Cas and Dean put a stop to this evil ploy? “Cigars? Cigarettes?”

When I turned, it was to come face to face with Dorian Gray. Unsurprisingly, he hadn’t aged a day in about a decade or so. Now whether that was because he was a Lit, or that damned portrait… His cobalt blue eyes rivaled my own, although, if I’m honest, his were always prettier. His curly blonde hair was coifed in a pompadour and his scarlet lips were curled in a hungry smile. He was dressed in a form-fitting pair of charcoal pants and an even tighter black t-shirt that left little to the queer imagination, carrying a tray of different smokes.

“Dorian, what are you doing here?”

With a wistful, overly dramatic sigh, Dorian pouted his plush lips and said, “Work’s been slow for those of us with a little more… culture.” Which meant with how many contemporary novels were capturing the attention of audiences, any Lits from the 19th century or earlier had to get creative to make a living. This suited Dorian, considering his nature. “But I’m still exquisitely tragic.”

With a soft laugh, I nodded, reveling in his beauty for a moment, although I was far too old for him now. “Yeah, you are.”

The lights started to dim and a spotlight shined on the closed curtains. I caught Crowley in my peripheral vision, straightening his tie and sitting upright. He even pulled out a small bottle of cologne, spraying it against his neck. It reeked of licorice and cloves, the breath of a child that got into his father’s cigarette case.

I turned to Dorian with a bemused expression. “What’s with him?”

Dorian smoothed out a nonexistent wrinkle on his pants with a shrug. “Oh, Mr. Crowley never misses a night when Dean performs.”

“Got a thing for Lits, huh?”

At that, Dorian gave me a pointed look. “If I recall, you did as well at one point.”

I cleared my throat and grabbed my drink, gulping down half of it at the implication, feeling a warmth at the memories that comment conjured. The crowd grew silent and the band could be heard from the pit, warming up their instruments. Then a familiar intro began, an infamously upbeat Cole Porter song that had been slowed down from a jazzy little jaunt to something sedated, steady, and sentimental. Just as a soft beat began, the curtains jostled and a leg popped out, bent at the knee in skin tight purple pants.

“We’re all alone… No chaperone… Can get our number… the world’s in slumber… ” A sultry, deep voice sang in a pleasant register, masterfully turning jazz to a ballad. The curtains parted and revealed one of the most breathtaking creatures I had ever seen in my life.

“Let’s misbehave…”

Summary: 

Dean Winchester is studying for a degree in Auto Mechanics, and needs a stupid GenEd credit for the semester. He ends up in a basic painting course, and the final project is to paint someone who is not a family member. His circle is pretty limited, what with juggling school and work. He could ask Cas, his best friend and roommate, whom he's secretly loved since they met.

Castiel Novak has been in love with Dean since he first set eyes on him, but he knows he's not remotely in the same league. When Dean asks to paint him for a class project, Castiel is thrilled, but terrified. He worries such an endeavor is fraught with the perils of being seen for the lovesick idiot that he is. To make matters worse, due to a misunderstanding, on the day of, he turns up in their living room completely naked, thinking this was the point of the exercise.

What could possibly go wrong?

Maybe something finally goes right.
