2, 7, 14, 28 for fhe book ask!!
2. your fav genre? sci-fi for sure!! 14. an overrated book? i absolutely hated red, white & royal blue by casey mcquiston! 😭💀 mostly because all the political stuff was just so horrible - i don't understand how anyone who considers themselves a leftist, for example, could stomach the level of milquetoast liberalism and democratic party worship that the author is obviously on... and the pop culture references were insufferable as well. 7. your least fav book trope? i had to put this one after number 14 because if pop culture references count as a trope, that's one i hate. definitely not intertextuality as a whole, mind you, but like... randomly namedropping popular stuff instead of using connections to other pieces of media/art as actual meaningful threads to build your theming or as a motif or whatever. 28. the last book you read? did you like it? the last two i finished were the first two books in the the rule of one trilogy by ashley and leslie saunders! i was lured in to read the first book by the unique concept of identical twin co-authors writing about identical twin protagonists & expected the book itself to be bad/boring dystopian ya. but it turned out to be decently written and quite entertaining so i decided to continue the series! the politics are pretty cringy in these books too - as you might glean from the premise "identical twins trying to survive in a one-child policy usa", they've got some reeeeally thinly veiled anti china stuff in there, as well as some american exceptionalism sap. but i can still recommend the series to anyone who enjoys the genre or just wants to nostalgize about the dystopian ya craze of the early 2010s with something written a bit more recently!

Ron DeSantis smeared this trans candidate. She just won her primary.
Ashley Brundage, 44, a DEI educator and former bank executive, moved one step closer on Tuesday to becoming the first elected transgender lawmaker from Florida despite a smear campaign perpetuated by the state’s governor, Ron DeSantis. Brundage, running for a state House seat from the Tampa area, swamped her opposition with more than 81 percent of the vote in Florida House District 65’s Democratic primary.  Related Ron DeSantis gave Ashley Brundage, a trans Democrat, an award. Now she’s challenging GOP power. DeSantis said he never would have given her the award if he knew she was trans. Now she’s running to be the first trans woman in the state legislature. She’ll face incumbent Republican Florida state Rep. Karen Gonzalez Pittman in November. Your LGBTQ+ guide to Election 2024 Stay ahead of the 2024 Election with our newsletter that covers candidates, issues, and perspectives that matter. A fourth LGBTQ+ candidate, former Obama staffer Chad Klitzman, did not fare as well, losing his primary in heavily Democratic Broward County to a pro-LGBTQ+ rights candidate, Barbara Sharief. Brundage’s opponent in the general election is a former teacher in the Tampa area who voted in favor of Don’t Say Gay legislation and book bans in school libraries. Brundage is the award-winning author of Empowering Differences: Leveraging Your Differences to Impact Change. Brundage says Pittman “only helped to scare away people from wanting to come to Florida” with the “draconian laws” she’s helped to pass. Those include Gov. DeSantis’ signature Don’t Say Gay legislation, which Brundage described in an interview with LGBTQ Nation as “absolutely ridiculous.” DeSantis’ antipathy for Brundage extends back, incongruously, to an award for which he congratulated her. In 2022, Brundage was given a Spirit of the Community award by the Florida Commission on the Status of Women for bringing in tens of millions of dollars to the Tampa area with an international economic empowerment conference. Brundage received a letter of congratulations from DeSantis, who, it turns out, didn’t know Brundage was trans. But news organizations did, and Brundage says DeSantis “dodged everybody’s request for comment on it. No comment. No comment. No comment. I announced my candidacy, of course, and talked about the letter. And then he finally responded — to the Daily Mail in the U.K. And he told them that he would have never given me the award if he had known that I was a transgender woman.” Like his hateful Don’t Say Gay laws, Brundage called DeSantis’ disavowal “ridiculous.” “I still brought in a $12.5 million conference, selling out two entire hotels and a convention center for the city of Tampa,” Brundage says. “I still did that. I still created a scholarship foundation for youth, and I still mentored children and women in my community through financial literacy educational programs for free. “So none of that has changed, but because he knows my political affiliation, all of a sudden, he wants to say that he wouldn’t have given me that award. And that’s exactly what’s wrong with our political world right now. Partisan politics get in the way of actually accomplishing things that are good for… http://dlvr.it/TCLrm9

New-to-Me Authors I Read In 2018 | Top Ten Tuesday
New-to-Me Authors I Read In 2018 | Top Ten Tuesday
The topic this week is New-to-Me Authors I Read In 2018!
I always hesitate to read new authors a bit because I’m always in the middle of so many different series that I really need to finish. Now and then I cave when I think a book will be particularly good – and often I’m rewarded with a new favourite author who I have to keep reading. Which means more books on my TBR. Hurray…? Sometimes…

The Art of Pulp Horror: An Illustrated History, edited by Stephen Jones, Applause Books, 2020. Cover art by Norman Saunders, info: applausebooks.com.
So often associated with cheapness and low quality, pulp fiction and filmmaking have influenced the way we live for more than a century. Many respected authors and artists worked for the pulp and paperback markets, while films made for the low budget or youth markets are now rightly regarded as classics as they continue to inspire the movies and television we watch today. Profusely illustrated with more than 800 rare and unique images from around the world—including book and magazine covers, interior illustrations, movie posters, comic books, promotional items, tie-ins, and previously unpublished artwork commissioned especially for this book—this handsome volume charts the history of escapist horror and the individuals who created it. Compiled by multiple award–winning writer and editor Stephen Jones, and with a foreword by prolific and acclaimed author Robert Silverberg, this visual history brings together insightful and revelatory commentary from some of the genre’s most highly esteemed experts. The Art of Pulp Horror is a stunning and informative guide to how, for over 100 years, we have enthusiastically embraced and exploited the gratuitous and the gory into our popular culture.

The Rule of Many (The Rule of One #2)
By Ashley Saunders
Published by: Skyscape Publication Date: May 7th 2019 Genres: Dystopian, Young Adult
Synopsis:
Born to a death sentence in a near-future America, rebellious sisters herald a revolution—if they can survive.
Twins Ava and Mira Goodwin defy the Rule of One simply by existing. The single-child law, ruthlessly enforced by Texas’s Governor Roth, has made the sisters famous fugitives and inspirations for the resurgent rebellion known as the Common.
But the relentless governor and his implacable Texas State Guard threaten that fragile hope, as Roth consolidates his power in a bid for ultimate authority.
As Ava and Mira relinquish the relative safety of their Canadian haven to stand against Roth, new allies arise: Owen, a gifted young programmer, impulsively abandons his comfortable life in a moment of compassion, while Zee, an abused labor camp escapee, finds new purpose in resistance.
The four will converge on Dallas for a reckoning with Roth, with nothing less than their destinies—and the promise of a future free from oppression—on the line.
Disobedience means death. But a life worth living demands rebellion.

Excerpt:
MIRA
Limos and luxury cars line the extensive circular driveway, stuffed with partygoers ready for the welcoming bash. Mrs. and Mr. Cross have already arrived with much fanfare from their son and his doting employees. I wonder if Ciro’s sisters are here.
I hear him get on the microphone, introducing his unwitting parents onto the stage of the overflowing banquet hall, the governor of Alberta and the mayor of Calgary looking on from the front row.
Everything’s falling nicely into place. If only the man of the hour would show.
I look at my watch: 7:30 p.m. He’s late. Ava’s knee bounces furiously, as if she can shake out her anxiety.
“He’ll come,” I say.
From our hideout in the corner of the foyer, shadowed and easily overlooked, we have the best seats in the house. A perfect vantage point to see and be unseen. Ava scans the budding festivities through the glass walls on our left. I keep my eyes on the glass windows straight ahead, seeing past the dazzling flares from the cars’ headlights, holding out for the first glimpse of the president.
A string quartet begins to play, and an electric energy pulsates through the hotel, enlivening the crowd around us with a giddy exhilaration, and I can’t help but feel it too. Eager, I spring to my feet. I pace up and down our tucked-away corner, checking the time, watching Emery from across the room, waiting on her signal.
“Do you hear that?” Ava asks. She stares up at the ceiling. I move beside her as we listen to the muffled roar of whirling blades slicing the air somewhere above the building.
“A helicopter,” Ava says.
“He’s here.”
We look to Emery, who stands near the entrance, her gaze locked skyward. Guests file past as she removes a headscarf from her pocket, drapes the silk over her distinctive curls, and pulls it into a tight knot at the back of her neck. She folds her right arm over her chest, our cue to move.
I feel, rather than see, Barend steal into place behind us, our long shadow, as we push to the end of the foyer. Pawel detaches himself from the crowd and crosses our path as he follows Emery out the front door. “Lots of luck,” he whispers earnestly. Like luck has anything to do with it. It’s all up to us.
Our target is the oversized clock that consumes the entire wall alongside the vacant concierge desk. Ava stops before the number six, and we slip behind a false door and stride side by side down an empty staff hallway. Three right turns, two left, a final door, and we’re outside.
There are no lights behind the hotel and no people. The night is chilly and moonless, but we find the footpath we were directed to take and make our silent way to the small grove of trees just twenty yards out.
Ten paces in, Ava and I turn from the path and weave through the evergreens until we spot the narrow clearing that is to be our stage. We position ourselves in its center, shoulder to shoulder, and wait. Somewhere to our right, concealed within the trees and darkness, Barend stands guard.
When told of the plan, Emery immediately authorized the private rendezvous. She knows pleading our case face-to-face with the president is the only way. Cameras and screens provide a barrier, Emery said. The media paints you solely as American rebels. Let him see how human you are. With Pawel at her side, Emery is to meet and escort the president here, while Ciro entertains his parents and guests, keeping them safely ignorant inside the banquet hall.
The minutes tick off, and Ava starts to shiver from either the cold or nerves. Or is that me shivering? Ava and I brought no weapons with us, to show good faith. No guns, no knives. Just us, with our naked conviction and hope.
This could be our last stop, a final end to the endless chase. A place to plan and plot and devise our crucial counterattack.
Ava nudges me with a sharp elbow. She points to the trees in front of us. Two distinct shapes emerge, a faint silhouette floating behind.
“Ready?” I whisper needlessly. Ava tightens her jaw, and I ball my hands into white-knuckled fists. I take a big gulp of air and exhale slowly. My breath comes out in swirling smoke, reminding me of a dragon. There’s a fire inside me, and suddenly I feel warm and calm. One look from Ava and I know she feels it too.
We’re ready.
The outlines become faces and bodies. Emery appears first, then President Moore, with Pawel a few steps behind. I stare at Moore, transfixed, my eyes glued to the man who can grant us refuge.
He stumbles forward, as if his own eyes have not yet adjusted to the dark. I search his every feature, looking for any hint of surprise, or shock, or understanding. But his face, though startlingly attractive in the starlight, is blank. Indifferent.
“President Moore,” Emery says, “this is Ava and Mira Goodwin.” He looks at us cross-eyed, his round eyes squinting as he takes us in. We all stand motionless, awaiting his response.
“You don’t look identical to me,” the president finally states, his thin voice magnified in the still night air. “One of you’s slightly taller, the other rounder.”
The leader of the free world opens with an insult. My first reaction is to defend my identicalness. Surprising, when all I’ve ever wanted is to be seen as different from Ava.
“Sir—” Ava and I speak at the same time.
The president laughs. “Ah, there it is.” The ground spins as he turns to leave. “This conversation will be moved to a different setting. Just the twins and me.”
Barend detaches from the shadows. Pawel and Emery enclose my sister and me. Ava grabs my arm, her grip tight enough to bruise.
“We do not agree to any change—” Emery starts, but Moore shouts over her.
“Security!”
Everything shatters, all plans and expectations smashed to pieces.
A gunshot rings out, then two more.
“Run!” Emery yells.
The last thing I see is Ava’s face, twisted in fear and fury.
Then something covers my eyes. My mouth.
I’m thrown over a bulky shoulder, the deafening sounds of a helicopter growing louder with every footfall. With every one of my muffled screams.
I’m shoved against something solid. I reach out, arms flailing, but there’s no one beside me. Ava.
I feel the chopper lift into the sky. Two spinning blades taking me higher and higher away from Common ground.

Caitsbooks’s Top 10 Most Anticipated April 2019 Releases
This year is absolutely flying by. I can't believe it's April already! This month has some of my most anticipated releases of the year, with a good mix of debut novels, series starters, and continuations! My wallet may hate me this month, but I'll be very happy once all these books come out.
Blog || Goodreads || Bookstagram || Twitter  || Reviews
April Releases
Note: These are in order of release date
April 2nd
10. Wicked Saints (Something Dark and Holy #1) by Emily A. Duncan This book is probably my most anticipated debut novel, if not one of my most anticipated books overall for 2019. Wicked Saints has gotten a lot of hype, and after reading the ARC, I can say it deserves all of it. This book broke me, in the best possible way, and I don't think I'll ever be over it. Read my review here for more of my ranting.
"A girl who can speak to gods must save her people without destroying herself. A prince in danger must decide who to trust. A boy with a monstrous secret waits in the wings. Together, they must assassinate the king and stop the war. In a centuries-long war where beauty and brutality meet, their three paths entwine in a shadowy world of spilled blood and mysterious saints, where a forbidden romance threatens to tip the scales between dark and light."
9. Defy Me (Shatter Me #5) by Tahereh Mafi The Shatter Me series has been one of my favorites since I first read it as a trilogy back in 2015. While I was nervous at first about the series being continued, I am now 100% on board and so excited for the next installment! The Kenji novella, Shadow Me, really got my hyped for this book!
(Spoilers below for the Shatter Me series, books 1 - 4) "Juliette’s short tenure as the supreme commander of North America has been an utter disaster. When the children of the other world leaders show up on her doorstep, she wants nothing more than to turn to Warner for support and guidance. But he shatters her heart when he reveals that he’s been keeping secrets about her family and her identity from her—secrets that change everything. Juliette is devastated, and the darkness that’s always dwelled within her threatens to consume her. An explosive encounter with unexpected visitors might be enough to push her over the edge."
8. Defy the Fates (Constellation #3) by Claudia Gray
I cannot express how excited I am for this book. I loved the first two novels, and I've been dying to find out how it all ends! If you're looking for a new sci-fi series, definitely pick this one up!!
(spoilers below for Defy the Stars and Defy the Worlds)
“Hunted and desperate. Abel only has one mission left that matters: save the life of Noemi Vidal. To do that, he not only has to escape the Genesis authorities, he also must face the one person in the galaxy who still has the means to destroy him. Burton Mansfield's consciousness lives on, desperate for a home, and Abel's own body is his last bargaining chip.  Alone in the universe. Brought back from the brink of death, Noemi Vidal finds Abel has not only saved her life, but he's made her into something else, something more. Not quite mech, yet not quite human any longer, Noemi must find her place in a universe where she is utterly unique, all while trying to create a world where anyone--even a mech--can be free. The final battle between Earth and the colony planets is here, and there's no lengths to which Earth won't go to preserve its domination over all humanity. But together, the universe's most advanced mech and its first human-mech hybrid might have the power to change the galaxy for good.”
7. The Princess and the Fangirl (Once Upon a Con #2) by Ashley Poston
This is the new companion novel to Geekerella. The first book was absolutely amazing, and I can't wait to see where Ashley Poston goes with this one!
"Imogen Lovelace is an ordinary fangirl on an impossible mission: save her favorite character, Princess Amara, from being killed off from her favorite franchise, Starfield. The problem is, Jessica Stone—the actress who plays Princess Amara—wants nothing more than to leave the intense scrutiny of the fandom behind. If this year's ExcelsiCon isn't her last, she'll consider her career derailed. When a case of mistaken identity throws look-a-likes Imogen and Jess together, they quickly become enemies. But when the script for the Starfield sequel leaks, and all signs point to Jess, she and Imogen must trade places to find the person responsible. That's easier said than done when the girls step into each other's shoes and discover new romantic possibilities, as well as the other side of intense fandom. As these "princesses" race to find the script-leaker, they must rescue themselves from their own expectations, and redefine what it means to live happily ever after. "
6. The Devouring Gray (The Devouring Gray #1) by Christine Lynn Herman
This book is one of my most anticipated debut novels of the year. People have been comparing it to The Raven Cycle, one of my all-time favorite series, so obviously I need to devour it. (Yes, I know that was a bad pun)
"On the edge of town a beast haunts the woods, trapped in the Gray, its bonds loosening… Uprooted from the city, Violet Saunders doesn’t have much hope of fitting in at her new school in Four Paths, a town almost buried in the woodlands of rural New York. The fact that she’s descended from one of the town’s founders doesn’t help much, either—her new neighbors treat her with distant respect, and something very like fear. When she meets Justin, May, Isaac, and Harper, all children of founder families, and sees the otherworldly destruction they can wreak, she starts to wonder if the townsfolk are right to be afraid. When bodies start to appear in the woods, the locals become downright hostile. Can the teenagers solve the mystery of Four Paths, and their own part in it, before another calamity strikes?"
5. You'd Be Mine by Erin Hahn
I was lucky enough to read an ARC of this back in January, and it blew me away. It was so much more than I expected. This is definitely not a book to miss!
"Annie Mathers is America’s sweetheart and heir to a country music legacy full of all the things her Gran warned her about. Superstar Clay Coolidge is most definitely going to end up one of those things. But unfortunately for Clay, if he can’t convince Annie to join his summer tour, his music label is going to drop him. That’s what happens when your bad boy image turns into bad boy reality. Annie has been avoiding the spotlight after her parents’ tragic death, except on her skyrocketing YouTube channel. Clay’s label wants to land Annie, and Clay has to make it happen. Swayed by Clay’s undeniable charm and good looks, Annie and her band agree to join the tour. From the start fans want them to be more than just tour mates, and Annie and Clay can’t help but wonder if the fans are right. But if there’s one part of fame Annie wants nothing to do with, it’s a high-profile relationship. She had a front row seat to her parents’ volatile marriage and isn’t interested in repeating history. If only she could convince her heart that Clay, with his painful past and head over heels inducing tenor, isn’t worth the risk. "

4. Descendant of the Crane by Joan He
This book has been called a YA Game of Thrones, filled with political intrigue and mystery. This is another book that has gotten a bit of hype, and I'm looking forward to seeing if it lives up to it.
"Princess Hesina of Yan has always been eager to shirk the responsibilities of the crown, dreaming of an unremarkable life. But when her beloved father is found dead, she’s thrust into power, suddenly the queen of a surprisingly unstable kingdom. What’s more, Hesina believes that her father was murdered—and that the killer is someone close to her. Hesina’s court is packed full of dissemblers and deceivers eager to use the king’s death for political gain, each as plausibly guilty as the next. Her advisers would like her to blame the neighboring kingdom of Kendi’a, whose ruler has been mustering for war. Determined to find her father’s actual killer, Hesina does something desperate: she enlists the aid of a soothsayer—a treasonous act, punishable by death, since magic was outlawed centuries ago. Using the information provided by the sooth, and uncertain if she can trust her family, Hesina turns to Akira—a brilliant investigator who’s also a convicted criminal with secrets of his own. With the future of Yan at stake, can Hesina find justice for her father? Or will the cost be too high?"
3. The Red Scrolls of Magic (The Eldest Curses #1) by Cassandra Clare and Wesley Chu
I think everyone can agree that Magnus and Alec are some of the best characters in The Shadowhunter Chronicles. Needless to say, I'm so excited that they're getting their own series!!! I've been waiting for this for too long.
"All Magnus Bane wanted was a vacation—a lavish trip across Europe with Alec Lightwood, the Shadowhunter who against all odds is finally his boyfriend. But as soon as the pair settles in Paris, an old friend arrives with news about a demon-worshipping cult called the Crimson Hand that is bent on causing chaos around the world. A cult that was apparently founded by Magnus himself. Years ago. As a joke. Now Magnus and Alec must race across Europe to track down the Crimson Hand and its elusive new leader before the cult can cause any more damage. As if it wasn’t bad enough that their romantic getaway has been sidetracked, demons are now dogging their every step, and it is becoming harder to tell friend from foe. As their quest for answers becomes increasingly dire, Magnus and Alec will have to trust each other more than ever—even if it means revealing the secrets they’ve both been keeping."
April 16th
2. Serious Moonlight by Jenn Bennett
Last year, I finally started reading Jenn Bennett's books, and fell in love with them. I went on a binge of all of her YA contemporaries, and I'm dying for more. At this point, it doesn't even matter to me what it's actually about. If it's written by Jenn Bennett, I'll read it.
"Mystery-book aficionado Birdie Lindberg has an overactive imagination. Raised in isolation and homeschooled by strict grandparents, she’s cultivated a whimsical fantasy life in which she plays the heroic detective and every stranger is a suspect. But her solitary world expands when she takes a job the summer before college, working the graveyard shift at a historic Seattle hotel. In her new job, Birdie hopes to blossom from introverted dreamer to brave pioneer, and gregarious Daniel Aoki volunteers to be her guide. The hotel’s charismatic young van driver shares the same nocturnal shift and patronizes the waterfront Moonlight Diner where she waits for the early morning ferry after work. Daniel also shares her appetite for intrigue, and he’s stumbled upon a real-life mystery: a famous reclusive writer—never before seen in public—might be secretly meeting someone at the hotel. To uncover the writer’s puzzling identity, Birdie must come out of her shell…discovering that most confounding mystery of all may be her growing feelings for the elusive riddle that is Daniel."
April 23rd
1. The Tiger at Midnight (The Tiger at Midnight Trilogy #1) by Swati Teerdhala
I am living for all the new fantasy novels coming out, and especially #ownvoices ones! This synopsis has me so intrigued and I can't wait to dive in.
"Esha is a legend, but no one knows. It’s only in the shadows that she moonlights as the Viper, the rebels’ highly skilled assassin. She’s devoted her life to avenging what she lost in the royal coup, and now she’s been tasked with her most important mission to date: taking down the ruthless General Hotha. Kunal has been a soldier since childhood, training morning and night to uphold the power of King Vardaan. His uncle, the general, has ensured that Kunal never strays from the path—even as a part of Kunal longs to join the outside world, which has been growing only more volatile. Then Esha’s and Kunal’s paths cross—and an unimaginable chain of events unfolds. Both the Viper and the soldier think they’re calling the shots, but they’re not the only players moving the pieces. As the bonds that hold their land in order break down and the sins of the past meet the promise of a new future, both rebel and soldier must make unforgivable choices."

Weird & Wonderful Wednesday
Tumblr media
Not sure if I’d call this interesting, or disturbing. Probably some combination of both. In the world of this book every body has two souls woven together within it. In this case, Eva and Addie. They take turns controlling the body. But, then as the body grows older, one of the souls is supposed to fade, while the other sorta takes control. Except, Eva hasn’t faded yet, and Addie discovers there may be a way for Eva to move again. But…(no surprisingly, since otherwise it’d be a boring book) hybrids are considered a threat to all of society (how dramatic). On the one side, there are others like Eva/Addie out there who want to help, but, on the other is the doctors and such who want to take one of them out, and, they don’t really seem to care which, or what it does to the other.
It’s was a super fun read (and is part of a series, woo), and, it was also a thought provoking read too. We humans metaphorically or poetically talk about souls and ourselves in a lot of different ways, but, this novel very awesomely took one of those philosophical thoughts and was like, ‘yes, but what if it wasn’t just metaphor, what if it were real’ and, that’s one of the best kinds of sci fi there is I think. And, by the end of the book I was sure of one thing, even more authors need to do out there ‘What If this linguistic/philosophical/metaphorical idea that people have about ourselves were real’ stories. (That genre name might need to be shortened for the bookshelves though).

Some Random APUSH Things
Since I am finding all these random papers from A.P. U.S. History, I thought I would make a few posts on them for anyone who might be taking the class in the future. This post is the random little worksheet-related things we did, as well as a list of interesting readings we did. I tried to link everything anyone might want to know more about in this post so this is really link heavy lol.
...
So the first one is from when we were studying the Civil Rights Era. It's the State of Louisiana's Literacy Test, and our teacher had us try and take it to show us how crazy literacy tests were. One of the questions is literally “Divide a vertical line into two equal parts by bisecting it with a curved horizontal line that is only straight at its spot bisection of the vertical” ....umm??
And here's a link to some Literacy Test Info in case you want to know more about them.
...
Okay, the next paper is a Moral Foundations Questionnaire. We looked at this in class to evaluate and compare our morals, and what they meant for each of us politically. Even if you don’t plan on taking A.P. U.S. History I think this is still a really interesting questionnaire to take on your own.
...
We also compared the Columbus Day Proclamations of Obama (2016) and Trump (2017). These gave us an idea of how events surrounding Columbus’ “discovery” of America were addressed. For example, In Obama’s proclamation it is written “As we mark this rich history, we must also acknowledge the pain and suffering reflected in the stories of Native Americans who had long resided on this land prior to the arrival of European newcomers” whereas Trump’s does not acknowledge the struggles of Native Americans. We could see two different current ways in which the past is viewed and addressed.
...
Now I have some readings we did throughout the year and also after we took the AP exam.
This is Water by David Foster Wallace - This is a speech where (according to The Guardian lol) Wallace reflects on the difficulties of daily life and 'making it to 30, or maybe 50, without wanting to shoot yourself in the head'. It’s basically about natural tendencies to view things through a lens focused on yourself (being self-centered) and choices we can make in our daily life on how we view things (among other ideas). It might sound dry (and that’s ok) but I found it to be very interesting food for thought that is well-written.
Failures of Kindness by George Saunders - A commencement speech on the importance of even the smallest choices we can make to be kind in some way. The speech is pretty short but has a good message on generally being happy and living kindly and without regrets.
The Inverse Power of Praise (excerpt from NurtureShock by Po Bronson and Ashley Merryman) - This chapter from the book addresses the myth that praising your kid by telling them they are smart benefits them a lot in life. In truth, science has proved that it is actually damaging to tell your kid they are smart and that instead, one should praise hard work. Ashley Merryman also did a TED Talk on parenting if anyone is interested.
Chapter 6: Harlan, Kentucky (excerpt from Outliers: The Story of Success by Malcolm Gladwell) - This chapter is on the culture of honor and the power such deep-rooted cultural legacies have even today. This reading was super interesting, and the studies it discusses are intriguing 10/10 would recommend. You should buy the book and support the author if you are interested in it, but note that I am linking here a pdf of the whole book so that you can see chapter 6 (starts on page 175 of the pdf) of it if you would like to. Malcolm Gladwell also has a blog (of sorts) and a podcast called Revisionist History (which my AP teacher said can sometimes be disappointing in comparison to his books).
...
I hope some of this was interesting to someone in some way seeing as how I just spent an hour or two compiling all these links and papers lol. Anyway, I highly recommend checking out this stuff (especially the readings) and looking into taking AP courses as well as seeking out knowledge of all types in your spare time. I’ll be back with another APUSH post sometime soon maybe.

Google ordered to provide information on people behind Nova Scotia cyberbullying
A Nova Scotia court has used cyberbullying laws to order Google to provide information about who is behind a blog and a YouTube channel that a couple says have been the source of harassment and insults.
The couple, Sakura Saunders and Darius Mirshahi, say in affidavits filed before Nova Scotia Supreme Court in January that a blog using the name "Antifa exposed" falsely alleges the two are involved in movements that are "terrorist" organizations.
Saunders, who identifies herself as a social justice activist and writer, says in her affidavit that a YouTube channel and the blog are filled with false conspiracy theories and is written in "a hateful tone" that incorrectly suggests she is violent.
She says she's afraid the blog and video channel will lead to violence against her and her family, and that she could become a target for extremist groups.
Mirshahi says in his affidavit that he is a union organizer and he expresses concerns that the anonymous author of the blog claims to be prepared to follow his wife "everywhere."
The couple's lawyer, Mitch Broughton, says in his affidavit that Google, which owns YouTube, should be able to identify the authors of the attacks on his clients. In court documents, the company's lawyers indicated they are not opposed to the motion.
Google's media division did not immediately respond to an inquiry about whether the company had complied with the March 25 order from Justice Richard Coughlan.
Broughton made his cyber-protection motion last month to have the information provided under the province's cyberbullying legislation.
He alleges the person who posted the blog put up images of the couple's social occasions without their consent and that the author cyber-bullied the couple.
The province's cyberbullying laws, established in 2017, have been employed recently in a high-profile case in Truro.
The parents of a three-year-old Nova Scotia boy who went missing last spring have taken the alleged administrators of a social media chat site to court, arguing that accusations and insults posted there are cyberbullying.
The lawyer representing Jason Ehler and Ashley Brown, the parents of Dylan Ehler, has alleged that hundreds of people have targeted the pair, particularly in online Facebook discussions.
Lawyers for the parents have also said the "horrific" comments posted in the discussions have included unfounded accusations her clients arranged for the boy to go missing and suggestions they took their own child's life.
An extensive six-day search for Dylan around a Truro, N.S., brook and the surrounding area where he was last seen was suspended in May. Truro Police Chief Dave MacNeil has said that his force has "no evidence to suggest foul play in the disappearance of Dylan."
That case is still before the courts.
This report by The Canadian Press was first published April 21, 2021.

In Defense of ST: DSC (long)
So... because I apparently like to torture myself, I sat through the whole 20-odd minutes of the Dave Cullen show’s review of DSC’s first two episodes. I jotted down some notes as I was watching and decided I was going to write my thoughts about his review.
Spoilers -> You won’t be warned again!
He’s not the only one to heavily criticize the show, but I keep hearing the same complaints, and most of them feel like petty cop-outs to simply hate on the show for not being the same formula as other Trek shows.
One this I read on Reddit (though I admit I would be hard-pressed to find it now) was that is was “Hard to believe” that in the 23 century, Captain Phillipa would have an accent.
What?
It’s hard to believe that maybe her parents raised her to be multi-lingual through hard work and study? Somehow she should always rely on the universal translator? We don’t eve know much about her, its possible learning languages was a hobby, or maybe her first career was a linguist. This whole complain seems like it was a way to disguise bigotry over a woman’s accent. But I have no proof of that. Its simply my opinion.
Moving on. Image below  details my notes. I’ll go through the,.
Tumblr media
One of Dave’s first complaints was that other Trek shows down-played diversity and made it “not a big deal.” But if you were to look at the history of Trek, you’d see that White Men* are generally more represented than others. He talks about how America is mostly white, but that doesn’t hold water with me. Star Trek is about the future, surely there would be more racially diverse people on board Starfleet vessels.
Diverging from the status quo doesn’t mean Discovery should be shamed for trying to include more characters with different backgrounds. Frankly, this cast seems more in line with Trek than a lot of the others.
To say that Discovery is anti-white is also a long shot... a shot that misses the mark as well. Of the overall cast, 7 of them are white in various roles. A white man is the captain, a white man in the main engineer, a white man plays Saru, and two white women play engineers. They even appear to have a robot / andriod on the bridge, does he count as white... or... not?
The Main Character, who is a woman, is named Michael?!?! Michael Learned, Michael Michele, and Michael Saunders are all women in real life. Yes, Michael is an unusual name for a girl, but that doesn’t mean its impossible. Ashley (For whom this blog blames) and I had this conversation the other day. I don’t see this as any different than Jayden / Hayden or Kelly or (As Ashley pointed out) Ashley. All can be used for boys and girls. This is a non-issue. You are literally finding any reason to hate this show if you have to pick on a god-damn name.
I can’t believe the Klingons are speaking in Klingon and I have to read subtitles! You know what... you just can’t fucking win. For DECADES people, Trekkies, have bemoaned the fact that all aliens speak in English nearly all the time. Now that Discovery has broken that cycle, they bitching about them not speaking in English. “I had to read subtitles for several scenes.” Oh boo fucking hoo. The production team went out of their way to make these scenes and avoid the “Everyone-speaks-english” trope. Like, legit, its a trope. Aliens Speak English (TV Tropes Link).
The opening scene with the Captain and Michael is pointless. The next complaint is that the opening scene means nothing. Despite the fact that it serves to introduce us to the characters and their motivations, it’s pointless. Saving a pre-warp civilization from dying out by breaking the Prime Directive is a staple of Trek Captains. We also learn more about Phillipa and Michael, and the plans Phillipa has for her. I think it also helped to expand on the Star Trek universe by showing us more alien-aliens. As for the Starfleet insignia drawn in the sand... that was meant to be a nod to the audience. It was meant to be fun... thanks for killing the fun, fun-killer.
The opening credits suck!!! To be honest, for the first two episodes I too hated the opening, but now that I’ve watched it a few more times, I’ve come to enjoy it. My favorite opening has always been Voyagers, the quality of the show aside, the opening was amazing (to me). I would say I enjoy them in the following order: VOY > TNG > DSC > DS9 > TOS > ENT. I’m sure we all have our list, and that’s mine. Discovery ranks high for me for Opening Credits. The problem with this complaint is that its super-super-super subjective. But the way he picks on the theme seems to go back to my final thoughts about Michael’s name and Klingon Language. Nit-picking for the sake of it.
Using a telescope to look at something in space?! Insane!!! Yeah... he mocks the use of a telescope to try and view the object from the first episode when the sensors can’t get a good reading on it. Uhhh... what?! That was smart. Sometimes the best technology is old technology... I legit don’t know what to think about this. What?! Really?!
*inhales* Klingons are White-supremacists of the Star Trek universe and their desire to remain “pure” makes them the good guys. Fuck that was a lot to type out without suffering a stroke. While the producers admit that they modeled the Klingons of Discover after Trump Supporters and Supremacists, in no way are the Klinons the good guys. Setting aside the fact that he claims the Federation is essentially invading Klingon space (they were simply at the border and places a comm-relay there), the Klingons made the first move. They destroyed Federation property and slowly but surely instigated a fight. Yes, Michael was planning to attack first, but not to try and start a war, but to talk to them in a language they understood. I agree that if a people want to remain isolated, the Federation has no grounds to force themselves upon them, but that’s not what the Federation was planning. They would have invited the Klingons to join the UFP like all other member worlds, and would have accepted the choice to decline. The Klingons in Discovery want war. They want to use their cause as a rallying cry to unite their people, and have no problem pulling innocent people into their political bullshit.
Furthermore, the concept of “pure” is an outmoded idea. Whether its 2017 or 2256, there is no basis for remaining pure. It is more likely that all people would have mixed DNA to some degree (whether you can see it physically or not), and Culture can quickly and easily adapt or change with every new encounter with new peoples.
Women were only cast as the Captain and First Officer as virtue signalling. Women represent half of the human population and only one other woman has been a Captain in her own series in 50 years of Star Trek. I don’t think its unfair to have another woman step-up and take command. That being said, since Captain Phillipa dies in the second episode, I hardly think you could say they were using this for political reasons or to appeal to the “left” since one of the biggest issues these days is disposable female characters. Look at (TV Tropes again) Disposable Women, I Let Gwen Stacy Die, and Career Building Blunder. The reason women want a “Strong Female Character” is because they’re tired of always being the ones to be murdered or left behind or shown as weak or incapable. Killing off the female captain in the first episode actually follows the trend of killing off women to move the heroes story forward; the twist being the hero is a woman.
The Ethical Protocols were stupid. Actually, this seems to be rather smart of the part of Starfleet. Considering that most criminals in the Federation aren’t likely violent to begin with, the idea that the computer would be designed to allow everyone to escape a doomed ship is cool. Michael using logic to convince the computer to let her out so that she wouldn’t die when the power failed was pretty well executed. This is less stupid than the Logic Bomb destroying an andriod trope.
Denegration of Men.* He genuinely believes that the show actively looks down upon men. Because the show isn’t about the Captain? Who knows! But all the mens in the show are allowed to be mens and that’s bad! Considering he’s only watched the first two episodes and is unaware that 3 different men, playing 3 different characters all have 3 different personalities, I can’t take him seriously on this. He actually says (Sarcastically) at one point in the video that “Women are the future!” So what? What if they are? Unless you have some issues with female authority, why is this a problem? Why do you care about women in charge? It doesn’t take anything away from you. I don’t see how Discovery has treated men any differently than the women on the show.
As a side note, he also disliked Star Trek Beyond. He sees it as “Leftist” and yadda yadda....
He DID however, like the CGI in Discovery. Legit, his only compliment on the show.
And if you feel like dying a little inside, here is a link to his video:

Significantly, they did not copy the exact path of the human demonstrator, but adopted the detour behavior shown by humans to reach their goal.[55] A 1977 experiment by Adler and Adler found that puppies who watched other puppies learn to pull a food cart into their cages by an attached ribbon proved considerably faster at the task when later given the opportunity themselves. At 38 days of age, the demonstrator puppies took an average of 697 seconds to succeed, while the observers succeeded in an average of 9 seconds.[56] Jade : Community Domestic Violence program Dana Bell Events, programs and activities But is it safe?
