so here is a review of dune with spoilers so if you haven't seen it yet *timothee voice* GO SOUTH

so I got to the movie late and couldn't get popcorn/soda so when it started I was like fuck how am I gonna get through this long ass movie without the good stuff?

I didn't even remember it

this is one of the most visually stunning films of 2024, every shot is a painting, a moveable feast if you're pretentious and say shit like that.

timothee is fantastic, his first act work is solid and even funny at times but that third act is monumental. i won't spoil it for you but when he hits this frame below, know that you are in for something phenomenal.

austin butler was a terrifying scrotum with a knife, he is a good actor and needs to move away from pretty boy roles. BE FREAKY MORE OFTEN AUSTIN

with what she was given, lea seydoux was great, every time the light hit her face and what her scene with Austin leads to is WHOA

rebecca ferguson (whomever screamed at her i'm in your walls btw) was so intricately evil and calculating just plotting and yapping with her hot topic fetus but her last line again WHOA

javier bardem was running that paul atredies stan account like the navy stilgar was one step away from handing out and trading muad'dib photoscards

my only real low point was unfortunately florence pugh, don't come for me, I love her, I get that irulan is supposed to be stoic but she was a bit monotone in all her line delivery and with such little screentime till the very end it just didn't knock out like she usually does and I know in dune messiah she'll be great with more to do

but that leads us to Zendaya. this is chani's story, not paul's and this is zendaya's film, not timothee's. what zendaya does with chani is heartbreaking and in three acts we see chani lose love and ascend herself all while trying to save her people. Chani is Dune and Zendaya's performance is the best acting of 2024 so far, this is for certain. when it gets to this frame below, you'll know.

honestly as an american i am also vexed by the tone of mota. mostly bc there is no tone? like i know that all war tv shows and movies are basically historical fanfiction but this takes it to a different level. the only way i can really describe it is "too pc". not in the "people are too sensitive these days" way but the "everything has to be so perfect that nothing means anything" way. to be fair that is a gripe that i have had with many shows and movies made in the past 10 years or so. feels bad man.

honestly, I feel this. you're right. I was talking to my lolo about it... even Band of Brothers, arguably the one that's most tainted by WW2 nostalgia-propaganda of the Bush Regime, has something to say about war. MotA... doesn't. it doesn't have anything to say that the other 3 shows of HBO War haven't already said. it's literally just a bunch of epithets about how War is Hell, War Takes, Death Does Not Discriminate, etc... without actually putting it together and making a thesis statement of it, ya know!

Band of Brothers' thesis is in the title-- From this day to the ending of the world, But we in it shall be remembered-- We few, we happy few, we band of brothers; For he to-day that sheds his blood with me, Shall be my brother. It's about the brothers you gain in and you lose to war! And, with the addition of the actual veterans being part of the production, it's about the importance of stories! Of making sure people don't forget! that these things happened to these people!! and that it should never happen again!! ok! great!

Generation Kill's thesis is sewed through the tapestry of the whole show (in the best way, btw, idk why ppl don't recognize it as the best HBO War show writing-wise like... guys. c'mon.)-- War is a Hell that benefits only the few and fucks everyone else!! Oh, and the Military Industrial Complex that likes to depict and sanitize War Crimes is spit to the face of all the victims of America's Imperialism-- American war vets we mercilessly left to die on the front lines and when they come home, included!! ok! great!

The Pacific's thesis is much the same, but with an additional criticism of the WW2 nostalgia-propaganda of the Bush Regime (not just BoB, but also Saving Private Ryan, Pearl Harbor, etc etc)-- oh, we're the greatest generation, huh? Look at the shit we had to do. Look at the people we killed. This is the reality of War in any generation. This is the reality of the War that just happened. You wanted war this bad? Look at it!! You think Peace is an easy and appeasing reward? think the fuck again!!!

Hell, it's not HBO War, but M*A*S*H has the same message-- is war worth it, just as long as we can justify it? Really? How ethical, really, is the Hippocratic Oath of a Doctor when you're at War? Do No Harm? How can you say that? I fix soldiers to send them back to die. How am I not complicit in their harm and the harm they do unto others, then?

......... What does MotA say? War is Hell. Yes, and? We know that. We've known that for a long time now. What else, huh? What else? Airplanes... pretty. Yeah. Ok. Those effects are lovely, yes. What else? Uuuuhhhh....... we have Austin Butler? hm. Try again.

Tom’s agents, James Farrell and Andrew Dunlap represent people like Jeremy Allen White, Matt Damon, Callum Turner, Aaron Taylor Johnson, Robert Downey, Will Poulter, Yahya Abdul- Mateen, Austin Butler, John David Washington, Kieran Culkin, Steven Yeun and Nicholas to name a few. Literally the top actors in the industry right now. James is a Partner at WME. Andrew is also a Partner and head of Talent Division. In what world does Tom get rid of two agents who are the top of the top agents in Hollywood representing the cream of the crop of actors? Because fans are mad and don’t know what agents do? That would be the dumbest move actually. They’re great agents and have been with Tom since he was a kid, they know him. Also, mind you Jeremy, RDJ, Kieran and Steven all won Golden Globes on Sunday and personally thank them. Also, Jeremy, Steven and Austin who have been working for a minute are just now having their moment in the sun, people have to understand this business ebbs and flow. No one can constantly be the only all the time. He’s perfectly fine and has a really good team, other actors would kill to be rep at WME and with those two guys representing them. So please stop saying Tom needs new agents when he actually has some of the best agents right now and if you don’t actually understand the day to day of what an agent does for work. NO WAY should Tom get rid of his agents. It seems like they are some of the BEST in the business actually, and they represent some of the best. It would be crazy right now to get rid of his agent. 🥴

Like you said, work for an actor ebbs and flows... that's just the nature of this business. 🤷🏾‍♀️ One year, an actor has a lot of projects, so of course they're gonna be everywhere. The next year, they may not have much going on, so you'll see less of them. That's just how this business is.

And I agree with you...I don't think fans should be trying to make their fave their one-stop-shop actor that dominates everything and everybody 24/7. Not only is that boring asl🙄, but it also sets you up for disappointment when your fave doesn't live up to your rigid expectations of them. 😔

bazluhrmann it's an exceptional thing to meet young devoted, talented, heartfelt, kind and passionate people. y/n4real.2002 was able to convince me she's all of the above in just a short talk, then I had her come in the studio and her raw emotion when performing brought everyone to tears, something that happened once again last night. Thank you young lady you're incredible.

oh honey!!! I remember going to the cinema to see Elvis and having big expectations afer seeing the trailer because I love Luhrmann's aesthetic and I am a fan of Elvis since I was like 14 (not a super fan but I listen to him and there was a time I was very much into american popculture + he introduced me to many great rockandroll artists) and I left the cinema absolutely in love with Austin's talent and looks haha I remember it was the time when my flatmate was moving out so I had to install new internet in the flat and the very first thing I did with it was downloading Austin's pictures 😂

dune 2 is a feast for the eyes like the first one with amazing photography (shout out to that sequence in the harkonnen's world) and the music is, well, it's hans zimmer and i really enjoy his work. but i don't think i liked this one as much as the first one. it did however feel shorter than it actually is, unlike part 1. austin butler was awesome and i still think timothee is miscast but it also fits with the story being told so i go back and forth on this. all i'll say is that in every other scene he looks bored as hell. i don't think he's suited for this type of role. zendaya puts him in a corner in every scene and btw she deserves so much better than this.

that "Twist" was so soap opera-ish - including feeling like a last minute attempt at something - that it made me chuckle but i presume it's from the book and they felt forced to include it. no comment on the anya taylor joy scene. the bene gesserit and their whole machinations are really interesting and i wish they were in a completely different and better story.

all in all this was just "fine". all i have to highlight about it is really the technical work, despite feeling at times like those elements of the movie were fighting against each other for the spotlight. The rest, such as the inspiration for the story and its orientalism, is self-evident and it's a large part of why this will never be more than "great visuals, beautiful visuals" to me.

a/n: posting this early as a HUUUGE thank you to y’all for 400 followers!! I honestly can’t believe it y’all are so sweet 🥺 to the dear nonnie who requested this: i hope it’s okay I made the reader gender neutral here! As a genderfluid person myself (though I lean more fem most days), I’m working on writing more gender neutral inclusive language in my fics! (in case you were wondering, the title is from a Tangled song! who knows which one it is 👀)

“Babe, you ready to go?” Austin calls from the hall.

“Yeah!” You reply, grabbing your bag from where it sits on your bedside table. You step out into the hall, double-checking you have everything first— phone, sunscreen, wallet— before turning to your boyfriend, asking for about the twentieth time that day, “And you’re sure it’s okay I’m coming with you? I know you said it was a cast meetup, I don’t want to intrude on anything—“

“Y/N,” Austin places his hands on your shoulders, the sincere look in his eyes cutting off your nervous rambling, “I want you to be there. Besides, everyone loves you. They all practically begged me to bring you along.”

You nod, reassured for the moment. “Right, yeah. Thank you.” You give him a small smile, feeling a little bad that your anxiety keeps getting in the way of what’s supposed to be a fun day.

“Always, sweetheart.” Austin replies, pressing a quick kiss to your lips before pulling you along to the car waiting for you.

Dating a famous actor, especially as the painfully shy, decidedly not-famous person you were, wasn’t always the easiest thing. But Austin did his best to keep you out of the public eye, and the castmates and colleagues he introduced you to were always the sweetest people. Like, for example, Baz, Dacre, Luke, and Olivia, whom you were going to meet up with at Disneyland today for a celebratory “the press run is over!” hangout.

“Y/N!” Olivia squeals as you head over to meet everyone near the entrance inside the park. She rushes over to hug you, Luke and Dacre not far behind her.

“‘Wow, Austin, it’s great to see you, how are you?’ Oh I’m great, thanks for asking, guys,” your boyfriend complains jokingly as his colleagues shower you with attention.

Olivia turns to him with a playful smile, “Oh hush, I was stuck with you for two years, I hardly ever get to see them!” She punctuates her sentence with a final squeeze around your midsection, releasing you to rejoin Baz and his wife, Catherine. The two of them greet you, mischievous grins on their faces, and you soon realize why as they pass out Elvis-themed mouse ears. The pink and black ears are bedazzled and covered in pearls, with a giant gold “EP” on one ear and the iconic “TCB” lightning logo on the other.

The group gushes over them as they put them on, Austin taking the liberty of putting yours on as if he were placing a crown on your head.

“You look adorable, sweetheart,” he says with a smile, pressing a quick kiss to your cheek. An “awwwwe” goes up from the group as they watch the interaction, and a heat entirely unrelated to the California sun floods your face. You’re quick to focus your attention on your shoes until the focus turns to the day’s activities, Austin pulling you close as Baz goes over the plan: find rides to go on together before the lines get too long, find food, walk around to take some pictures with characters, and there might be time for people to go off and do their own separate things before meeting back up to say goodbye at the end of the day.

You enjoy the slower paced rides: the teacups, It's A Small World, all the usual ones, but you start lagging behind a bit as the group heads towards a… very large rollercoaster. Apart from Olivia, who shoots you a slightly concerned look that you wave off with a small smile, most of the group doesn’t notice, too engrossed in the conversation they’re having. Austin, however, isn’t so easily convinced. He hangs behind to walk by your side, intertwining your fingers and saying softly, “I know you don’t really like these kinds of rides. If you want we can just hang out and go get some food or something while they go…”

You hesitate, glancing over at the rest of the group chatting excitedly. “I… I don’t want you to miss out on all this stuff just because of me—“

“If I get to spend more time with you, I’m not missing out on anything, I promise, sweetheart.” Austin assures you with a sweet smile. “Hey guys!” He calls to the group ahead of you two, “I’m kinda hungry, I’m stealing Y/N to go get some food with me. We’ll meet you guys after, okay?”

Warmth floods your chest as he draws all of the attention to him, the group waving him off with a “have fun you two!”

You squeeze his hand in thanks as the two of you turn to walk away, and he squeezes back, looking at you with a soft smile. The line at the ice cream stand he drags you over to is short enough that you’re able to enjoy the Mickey-shaped treat before it’s time to meet up with the others again.

You meet the others at the exit to the ride, Olivia yelling something about how Luke was “absolutely terrified the entire time!” — with Luke vehemently denying it — as you make your way to Café Orleans for “some real food,” as Baz had put it.

Austin is practically glued to your side throughout the meal and even afterwards as you’re making your way through the park to take pictures with characters. It’s sweet, but eventually you have to extricate yourself from him to rehydrate, going off in search of refreshments.

He sighs, slouching at a table as he awaits your return. Olivia slides into a chair near him with a smirk.

“They just went to get a drink, they’ll be back in a minute, Aus.”

Austin blushes, worrying his bottom lip between his teeth, “I know, I just…” he trails off, unable to explain exactly how he’s feeling; he hasn’t felt this attached to someone in a while, but after getting to spend so much time with you since the press run ended, it’s hard for him to pull himself away.

Olivia gives him a soft, teasing smile. “Don’t worry, Aus, it’s cute how much you care about them. The two of you are honestly adorable.”

“Yeah, I…I really love them,” he says finally.

Your foot tapped anxiously against the hardwood floor as you awaited your boyfriend’s return home. He had been away prepping with Baz for his biggest role yet: Elvis, and you ached to see him again.

“I’m gonna look a little different, baby,” Austin had warned you over the phone, refusing to FaceTime you to keep his new look a surprise. 

“Well I can’t wait to see your face again, no matter what you look like,” you had replied, mind racing at the possibilities of what this “new look” could entail.

The jangle of keys at the front door jolted you out of your thoughts and you raced to the foyer to greet your boyfriend in person for the first time in what felt like forever. 

“Hey hon—“ your jaw dropped as you took in his face. Gone were his gorgeous blond waves and in their place was a clean swoop of silky jet black hair.

“Hi baby,” he said with a nervous laugh “I did, uh— I did say I’d look a little different, right?”

“I— yeah, but—“ your mind buffered as you tried to find the words. Of course you loved the blond, but you couldn’t have imagined how incredible he would look with dark hair. You stepped closer, grasping his face and pulling him in for a brief kiss, “You look amazing, honey.”

He grinned, dropping his bags carelessly on the floor as he wrapped his arms around your waist and pulled you flush to his chest, dipping to press his lips to yours. 

“I missed you so much,” he mumbled against your lips.

He pulls back a bit, looking vulnerable. “You really think it looks okay? It’s gonna be like this for a while.”

“You look fucking gorgeous, honey, I promise.” You beam. “Now,” you grabbed his hand, “I believe you promised me you were going to make up for all the time you’ve been gone, so get over here.” You pulled him over towards your bedroom, a mischievous sparkle in your eyes.

“Lead the way, baby,” he smiled, eyes soft. “I’m all yours.”

Trouble | Austin Butler x fem!reader

A cast outing after filming Austin's "Trouble" performance prompts you to finally confess your feelings.

Warnings: a couple swear words, possible spoilers for Elvis (2022), but I think that's it!

“CUT!”

Baz’s voice carried throughout the stage as the scene came to a close and Austin slid out of the police car, grinning and breathing as though he had just sprinted for miles, sweat dripping down his hair onto his face, snaking its way under the collar of his shirt. He was almost immediately surrounded by extras cheering and clapping, a near replica of the raging crowd that had surrounded him in the actual scene.

You, however, were frozen near the edge of the stage, brain frantically trying to process everything that had just happened. Images of Austin on his knees in front of the audience, cupping a girl’s face, laying onstage screaming into the mic flashed across your mind, doing absolutely nothing to calm the flush on your face. You had harbored a crush on Austin since he was brought on as Elvis and his latest performance had assured you that those feelings weren’t going away anytime soon. 

You saw Austin exchanging congratulations with Tom, Richard, Helen, and Baz, praising the rest of the cast surrounding him. His eyes continued sweeping the crowd, seemingly searching for someone, when his gaze met yours across the sea of actors and crew alike. Your breath caught in your throat, unable to tear away from his icy blue gaze, and you were sure he could read every thought racing through your mind about what exactly his rendition of “Trouble” had done to you. Embarrassed, the flush in your cheeks intensified, but Austin only gave you something that looked remarkably similar to a knowing smirk, his gaze burning into you for a split second before returning his attention to the crowd around him.

You let out a shaky breath. At least this was the last scene of the day and you could go home.

Some time later you were finally out of hair and makeup, and no sooner had the thought of curling up on your couch with a pint of Ben & Jerry’s crossed your mind when Olivia waved you over to her car.

“Come on! We’re all going out for drinks!”

Unable to find the energy to refuse, you slipped into the car with her. She playfully nudged your shoulder as you made your way to the cast’s usual bar.

“So, that ‘Trouble’ performance, huh?”

You stiffened imperceptibly. “Yeah, it was… quite a show.” you said in the most casual tone you could manage.

Olivia rolled her eyes, “Come on, please just admit you have feelings for Austin already. You’ve been giving him serious heart eyes every time you see him, it’ll be so much easier if you just tell him.”

You blinked “Wha- Have I really been that obvious?”

“Well, to me and Natasha and everyone… yeah. Kinda. If you’re asking if Austin has noticed? I’ll have to get back to you on that one. But trust me, he definitely likes you too.”

“He definitely doesn’t, but I appreciate the vote of confidence” you replied, the tone of your voice signaling that you definitely didn’t want to talk about this anymore.

“Alright, I’m just saying,” she said “you never know what might happen.”

Your only reply was a shrug, and before you knew it the two of you had pulled up to the bar where Natasha and a few of the others had already grabbed a table. In what seemed like no time at all, the table was filled with a cacophony of laughter and eventually, thanks to Olivia, the conversation turned to the scene that was still on everyone’s minds.

“Austin, I’m sorry, but can we please talk about how incredible that ‘Trouble’ performance was?” Olivia smiled at her co-star.

He let out a shy laugh, “Well, thanks, Liv. I mean,” he gestured to the rest of the cast around the table “I wouldn’t have been able to do it without you guys.”

More people jumped into the conversation to heap their praise on Austin when Olivia spoke up again, “I’m serious, you were absolutely amazing. I know (Y/N) enjoyed it.” She nodded over to you.

You froze as the attention of everyone around the table turned to you. You knew Olivia was only trying to help, but you still wanted to sink into the floor as you mumbled “Yeah, it was, um. Seriously amazing. You did an awesome job.”

You cleared your throat, excusing yourself and pushing your chair back from the table as you made your escape out the back door into a small alley dimly lit by the few lights outside the bar.

You leaned against the brick wall of the building trying to gather yourself, but before you could do much of that, the door next to you opened and Austin stepped out into the alleyway. 

“Hey, you okay? It seemed like some of the stuff Olivia said back there kinda… got under your skin a bit.” he said, moving to lean on the section of brick wall next to you.

You shook your head. “It’s nothing, I’m fine.”

He frowned, concerned. “Hey, now. If something’s upsetting you, I’d really like to at least try to fix it.”

“Why do you care?” you huffed, not caring that you sounded like a petulant child at this point.

“Wha-“ he stammered, confused, “Why do I care? Because you’re my friend, and-“

You knew your boyfriend was completely dedicated to his latest role, feeling the pressure of portraying the King of Rock and Roll. What you didn’t anticipate was exactly how good Austin would sound putting in the work to sound like Elvis.

He had been watching interviews and performances religiously and, with the help of his dialect coach, was determined to perfect that iconic Southern drawl. So, he had started using it in conversations with you. But when he noticed how it made you weak in the knees, well… he learned how to use that to his advantage.

“Babyyyy,” he whined from his spot next to you on the couch, “would you mind grabbing me a soda from the fridge real quick?”

It was one of the rare lazy days the two of you had. You were curled up on the couch together, you with your copy of Emma and Austin with his copy of What We Talk About When We Talk About Love, lounging in the living room of his place in Australia where he was currently filming. Elvis was playing softly in the background, as usual.

“You’ve got legs of your own that work perfectly fine, you can get it yourself,” you teased, nudging him with your foot.

He turned to you with those big blue puppy dog eyes he did way too well. You opened your mouth, ready to shut down whatever plea he had, when he said oh-so-slowly, “Aw c’mon, baby, please?” in that damn husky drawl he’d been working on for weeks.

You felt your face flush, and a victorious smirk crossed his face.

You immediately tried to school your face into a neutral expression. “You’re gonna have to try harder than that, Butler,” you said, returning your attention to your book.

He moved closer to you, close enough you could feel his breath on your neck. “Baby,” he crooned, his lips brushing your cheek,

“Darlin’…” his mouth moved to that sensitive spot just under your ear.

“Sweetheart…” he drawled as his lips worked a trail down your neck.

Just as you had begun to melt under his attention, he returned to the topic that had started this whole situation. “Please,” he breathed against your neck, husky Southern twang warming his voice, “grab me a soda from the fridge.”

Your half-lidded eyes flew open and you pushed yourself off the couch, face flushed. He smirked, knowing exactly what the warm Southern drawl, among other things, had done to you.

“This is just because I want to get myself a snack and I might get you a soda if I feel like it,” you insisted, rushing off to the kitchen before he could see how affected you were.

“Whatever you say, baby,” Austin called after you, still in that same drawl, “whatever you say.”

“I’m gonna marry you someday.”

That’s what Elvis Presley had said to you when he was just 20 years old and his career was starting to take off, thanks in large part (as Elvis said) to the Colonel. And you, being the young girl in love that you were, believed him.

What a fool you were.

You managed to stay together for another year before the Colonel, his claws digging into Elvis’s heart and soul to bleed all the green he could out of him, managed to convince him that appearing single would be what was best for his career— he had to let all those screaming girls believe they had a chance with him, after all.

“Baby please,” Elvis pleaded, “this is for my career. I promise it won’t be for long. We’ll get back together, you’ll see.”

You shook your head, “No, Elvis. I’m not gonna sit around waiting for you like some damsel in distress. If you want me, keep me. But otherwise…”

You paused, waiting for him to say something. Begging, pleading, praying he would say something, that you had managed to change his mind.

When he said nothing, you exploded.

You had screamed and cried, and he had screamed and cried, and you had taken your things that had made their way into his room in Graceland and stormed out of his life for good, only pausing to give him one final sincere “I love you” before you walked out the door.

The last image you had of him (that wasn’t on a tv screen or poster) was of him standing in the foyer in Graceland, tears streaming down his face, refusing to chase after you.

You hoped that time would eventually heal your wounded heart, but apparently whoever said time heals all wounds was a fucking idiot because it was now just over a decade later and you were still as in love with Elvis Presley as you had been when you were one of the only girls in the world who knew his name.

He, evidently, didn’t feel the same.

That much was clear, at least, based on the way he was still overly flirtatious with his audience in his shows, not to mention the rumors about relationships with his movie co-stars. In his shows, before he went off to Germany, he had taken to stepping down into the audience and kissing practically every woman in the room. That alone cleared any remaining doubts from your mind that he still thought about you in any capacity, despite that little voice in the back of your head that still held out some futile, desperate hope.

You’re about to curl up on the couch with some tea and your copy of Anne of Green Gables — exactly what you need on a rainy day like today — when someone knocks on your door.

“You expecting anyone, Y/N?” your friend Annie calls from the hall. You had been living with her for about 5 years down in Louisiana, after the memories in Memphis had become too much, and you loved it.

“Nope,” You call back, wondering who on earth would be knocking on doors in this weather. “If it’s one of those door-to-door salesmen, slam it in his face again.” You suggest with a laugh.

“Will do,” comes her reply, and you can hear the smile in her voice.

You turn you attention back to your book as the door opens, and nearly spill your tea all over yourself as you hear a sultry drawl you hadn’t heard in person in over a decade.

“Hi Annie… is Y/N here?”

There’s a moment of silence where you’re sure Annie is as stunned as you are, then:

“Maybe,” she replies curtly, “What do ya want?”

Annie knew the whole story of you and Elvis, and she had sworn that she’d never let you get hurt like that ever again.

“Please, Annie, I just wanna talk to her.”

What kind of nonsense is this? It's not like his insta still had really old stuff to begin with? There already had been a purge in between. Yes, I also do find it ridiculous that they deleted all previous entries and then just put up the Dune trailer. If you decide to do social media for your client either do it right or don't do it at all. But it's probably a compromise because Austin doesn't want to be on social media anymore but has contracts that say he has to do promo...

But, to come to the other part of that rant, have you even watched the first Dune film?! Or read the books? Villeneuve is doing amazing! And Spielberg mediocre?...don't get me started ��😳

"Big old Hollywood" is famous also because of what it does and can do and Baz is part of it. He's no indie director. Elvis would have never seen the light of day without Hollywood. Just because some awards look down on his style (which I admire wildly) doesn't mean he isn't part of it.

Now, tastes differ but to call Dune a cashgrab just because it has an amazing cast or Timothy Chalamet overrated...sounds more like a petulant child to me than real issues. I can't say I truly understand your argument because while Timothy is not my favourite, I have seen too many amazing performances by him to call him that.

You call yourself a fan but have you listened to any of Austin's interviews about how he wants to work with amazing directors (like Villeneuve, Spielberg, P T Anderson, ...)? Now he gets to do this. Do you believe that you know better than Austin Butler what makes a director great? And we are going to get so much good stuff out of it, too. How can you hate on that as a fan of Austin? Just because of some deleted insta pics? Or because he is in movies with a dude you don't like?

What Scorsese said about the Marvel/super hero movies certainly had some truths, but how do Villeneuve/Dune or Spielberg fit in there? I mean, I see how you could make the argument that Dune is a weird sci-fi/fantasy franchise with multiple parts (though not endless as Marvel) but apart from that it's nothing like the Marvel films...from which I also hope Austin stays away btw, but I feel like overall, he's making good choices. Like with the Dan Winslow book trilogy for example.

I hope he's going to be in indie movies as well as big blockbuster movies and he should do a play again. In the end, we'll always win as fans because we get new content. How can you hate that?

So Austin / Austin’s management (because I really don’t think it was him personally) deletes everything on his Instagram page and he comes back after months … by posting the new Dune trailer? I’m sorry … but the audacity. They took everything from that account. Everything in connection with  ELVIS and Baz and finally they do this? See, I have a personal problem with Dune and Villeneuve and how this movie is only a cashgrab because it has “all the big names” but to me this feels so radical? It feels like “they need to put Austin ayway from the past and into the real and big Hollywood because Baz isn’t good enough anymore.” The fact that he’s working with Spielberg and Villeneuve is proof enough. Sure I’m happy for Austin that he gets to work with.. them. But their movies are fucking mediocre. There is nothing to them. I’m sorry but I definitely won’t watch this shit. Austin needs to get himself a better management. I mean for fucks sake they talked about how they want to put him into an action / marvel / dc movie. Can only look over to Scorsese when it comes to shit like this. The man is right.

Okay I finally get the austin butler hype! I saw bikeriders while I do think not everyone will like this film and some might be expecting something different and some may be surprised that austin isnt the central focus but when hes onscreen hes really good he presents a smouldering tough exterior but there is a vulnerability to the way he plays benny that truly surprised me. I liked elvis but I couldn't connect with austin, and dune part 2 he was cool but kinda underwhelmed me but bikeriders hes smartly written and used brilliantly as a cipher and austin maxmizes that. Truly I see the movie star vibes in this movie.

Tom hardy lowkey heartbreaking and jodie lets get it priving whu shes one of the best.

Solid film liked it alot.

How important is Melvin Gordon to the Chargers’ Super Bowl chances?

Geoff Schwartz’s mailbag is back to answer your burning questions about Melvin Gordon’s value and the Panthers’ switch to a 3-4 defense.

With the news regarding Melvin Gordon, if he doesn’t play this season with the Chargers, how much easier does the Chiefs’ path to Super Bowl become? — @mattylo85

Chargers running back Melvin Gordon announced that he’s going to sit out until he receives a new contract or he’s traded from the Chargers. This is a bold move and while it’s worked for Antonio Brown and to an extent Le’Veon Bell, Gordon isn’t those players. With the declining value in the running back position, this isn’t a wise move by Gordon.

I’ve been very vocal about the shifting value of a running back. As advanced stats continue to show the passing game is much more valuable to winning than the rushing attack, many teams have rightfully decided they aren’t paying running backs top dollar. This is tough to attempt because I LOVE a great running back. They make our job (offensive linemen) much easier. Just as we can make a running back look good, they can sometimes make us look even better. The best running backs only need a small window and bye bye.

But, you can’t deny the stats and the production of running backs who aren’t drafted high or paid a boat load of money. That being said, I think having an above-average or better running back on your offense is valuable if your franchise cornerstone pieces are already set.

Take the Cowboys or Rams for example. Both have their quarterbacks (still on rookie deals btw), left tackles, franchise pass rushers, and secondary help. Adding an elite running back to the mix is prudent at that point, because you can never have enough weapons for your quarterback.

In my mind, there’s only one running back in the NFL who matters for a team’s chances to win a Super Bowl. That is Ezekiel Elliott. Zeke is special and he’s a HUGE part of that offense. Besides his ability to move the chains behind that great offensive line, he’s explosive in the pass game. His ability to take short pass, including screens, to the house is vital to the success of the Cowboys.

So, the answer to the question above is that I’m not sure it matters at all. Gordon might have been able to hide deficiencies on the Chargers’ offensive line — in fact, I’m sure he did — so that’s a big loss for the Chargers. But, they still have Austin Ekeler, plus Philip Rivers, Hunter Henry, and their impressive wide receiver group. They have an outstanding pass rush and secondary. The loss of a running back shouldn’t derail their season.

I received many questions about the Panthers switching from a 4-3 base to a 3-4 base defense since it was announced, so I’ll answer it here. Thank you @biakabutuka21 for the question this week.

I love this switch for the Panthers because it’s allowing Ron Rivera to run the defense, which is ideal for where the Panthers are right now.

The Panthers had a brain dump on the defensive side of the ball after the losses of two defensive coordinators — Sean McDermott and Steve Wilks — in consecutive seasons to head coaching gigs. The Panthers took a step back last season on defense, and I love that Rivera took control of this unit. He’s an underrated head coach and a phenomenal defensive mind. So, just from that standpoint, I love it.

From a schematic standpoint, I’ve always thought a base 3-4 was tougher to block than a 4-3, as the 3-4 has more moving parts. A 4-3 defense is basic and they play much “faster” at times, but we know what is coming. In a 3-4 defense, there are more single blocks for linemen in pass pro, and it’s tougher to fit up on double-teams in the run game.

Linebackers, like Luke Kuechly, get to run free. Plus, it allows the Panthers to play Kawann Short, Dontari Poe/Vernon Butler, and newly acquired Gerald McCoy all at the same time. In a base 4-3, one of those would have to sit.

Now, with nickel personnel being used at such a high rate by the offense, defenses aren’t in base personnel as often. So when the Panthers are in nickel, they’d pull off Poe and still have Short and McCoy, with Mario Addison and rookie Brian Burns (being optimistic) rushing the edges.

Lastly, from a nerdily Xs and Os angle, I’m pumped to see how their base personnel unfolds. In a 3-4, you typically have five players on the line of scrimmage:

One is the nose tackle, playing in a shade as most teams run a 3-4 under. That’s where Poe or Butler will play.

The other two defensive linemen spots are a backside 3-technique, a player on the outside shoulder of the backside guard.

Outside of the 3-technique is a standup passer, often classified as a defensive end (listed as a linebacker though).

On the frontside, you have that shade mentioned above, and the third defensive tackle playing a 4- or 4i-technique, on the frontside tackle.

Then there’s a standup defensive pass rusher, often classified as the Sam linebacker.

So, there are the five players. Base 3-4 teams play those players either left and right, or strongside and weakside.

For example, if you’re playing left and right, the defensive tackles stay on their side no matter the strength of the formation, and they’d play that 4i or 3-technique, depending on strength. The outside linebackers do the same. One is the defensive end player, on the backside, or the Sam linebacker frontside. That means both players would need the ability to drop into coverage.

The other way to play these players is strong and weak. One outside linebacker and one defensive tackle are the rush defensive end and 3-technique. They always align weak. Then you’d have one defensive tackle who’s always the 4-technique who travels with the Sam linebacker. Those two play strong.

Hopefully you’re still with me. So how do the Panthers do this? I think they do strong and weak. McCoy and Addison are the weakside players. They are the 3-technique and DE. Short becomes the 4i, with Burns playing the Sam.
