Stand Atlantic - Was Here
Two years ago, Stand Atlantic dropped one of my favorite albums of that year, and maybe even of the 2020s as a whole — f.e.a.r. Standing for “fuck everything and run,” that record really blew me away when I heard it in 2022. It was a refreshing dose of pop-flavored pop-punk with some pop-rock, hip-hop, and hardcore thrown in. It was a unique album, especially for a genre that doesn’t like to be unique. I absolutely loved it, and I couldn’t wait for the follow-up. Now we got it in the form of Was Here, and I had no idea this was coming out soon, unless I just wasn’t paying attention. I was instantly excited about this, because if their last album was any indication, this thing was going to be just as good, if not better.
I’ve given this album a bunch of listens throughout the last week, and I’ve got some mixed feelings on this album, but I do love it a lot. It’s a fantastic album, but not without its issues. Their last album, for as much as I loved it, had a couple of small issues, too, but I’ve been going back and forth on whether or not Was Here is better than f.e.a.r. I came to the conclusion that it’s not better overall, but they’ve improved quite a bit on other stuff. I would definitely listen to this if you enjoyed f.e.a.r, but I would also go into this album with an open mind and realistic expectations, especially if you loved their last album as much as I did.
Let’s start with what they’ve improved on, and it comes down to two key things: their sound and their guest features. There wasn’t much you could really do to their sound, but this album ups the ante with how unique and eclectic they could get. This album features metalcore, pop-punk, pop-rock, straight up pop, some R&B, trap, and many more styles of music that really shows the band taking on unique and interesting influences. Each song has its own feel, whereas their last album had a few songs that fit one style, you can’t say that here. No two songs sound alike, and that’s not something I can say for a lot of albums this year.
They also make use of the guests on here, but there aren’t a whole lot. Singer Sueco is on “Nose Bleed,” which is a fun pop-punk banger, and the song “GIRL$” features PVRIS and Bruses. The latter artist I know nothing about, but PVRIS is a solid pop band, and this song is basically a pop-rock cut. The last guest is progressive metalcore band, and fellow Aussies, Polaris on “Criminal,” and that’s a really cool and inventive pop-punk meets metalcore track. Most of the song is an upbeat pop-punk track with a cool riff running through it, but it suddenly erupts to a metalcore bruiser in the bridge with some harsh vocals and an awesome breakdown. They didn’t quite utilize the few guest spots on f.e.a.r, but they don’t miss out this time.
Now, like with their body of work, they’ve got some stuff that’s always works, such as their vocalist being one of the best in the scene (and she sounds even better throughout this album), or the band being in top form throughout the album. They’re chameleons of the pop-punk scene, being able to change their sound at a moment’s notice, most of the time in the same song at a later point. It’s absolutely impressive, but that also leads me to the issues I have with this album, and there are two big ones: its eccentricities and its lyrics.
As much as I love how unique and off the wall this album is, that also comes to bite itself in the ass, because this album is a little too eccentric for its own good. It would work a bit better if the album was a bit shorter, but it’s around 42 minutes, which is a good length on its own, it’s just a bit long for an album with a lot jammed packed into it. With more unique albums, you almost need a shorter runtime to help with how overwhelming it can be. The album’s sounds don’t feel so jarring, but it’s when each song is so different, it can be a bit of musical whiplash. I love the unpredictable sound it has, but at that same time, this album has its clear highlights and some lowlights.
I don’t think anything is bad here, make no mistake, but the highs and lows are more noticeable when everything is so unique and different. I can see this album being a lot for some people, especially people that just wanted a catchy pop-punk album, but for what it’s worth, this album is a lot of fun. Its unique sound is a great aspect, but it also brings it down slightly because it’s a little too eccentric at times.
The other main issue I have with the album are its lyrics, and while I enjoyed the band’s weird and twisted sense of humor on their last album, I don’t quite like the lyrics as much here. The lyrics are played less for laughs and they’re less cheeky, but they’re played straight here and they just aren’t that good. A handful of songs have some solid lyrics, but a good example is a song like “GIRL$,” which has a good message but reads like a “girlboss” anthem and it’s a bit cringy. Some tracks work wonderfully, like “Love U Anyway,” and “17,” but a lot of others just don’t stick the landing for me. They don’t hinder the album enough that I hate the album, or even dislike it, but it makes me not want to go back to it that much.
I still love this album, and while it does improve on some things, it also takes a couple steps back, so it’s not quite on the same level as their last album, although it’s close. The vocals, hooks, and instrumentation is awesome, being some of the most inventive of their career, as well as this record being the most unique of their career so far. Unfortunately, it’s uniqueness is a little much at times, because of how each song is completely different, and the lyrics aren’t anything special, despite not being horrible. They don’t have that cheeky sense of humor they did on their last album that made them so fun. This is still a really good and unique album, so if you want a unique pop-punk album, I definitely would listen to this one.

I never particularly liked hardcore, metalcore, emo, or adjacent genres, even as a teenager when they were charting. The issue I think was that I was only exposed to US bands. It was even harder then to discover music; beyond the radio, I was getting reccs from forums, music stores, and Rage. Something about the whiny, nasal vocal style in a US accent sounds horrible to me. However! Australian accents are naturally nasal and kinda whiny. So, take metalcore, and slap an Aussie accent on that bad boy, you've really got something. It just sounds right. One of the few places you can hear Australians singing their their actual accents without it sounding bizarre.

7. Kublai Khan TX - Lowest Form Of Animal
(hardcore, metalcore)
Kublai Khan TX - Swan Song feat. Scott Vogel
6. Sebii - VVYELLOW
(hyperpop, rap)
Charli XCX - Beg For You feat. Rina Sawayama
4. Thee Oh Sees - A Foul Form
(garage rock, punk)
Thee Oh Sees - Funeral Solution
3. black midi - Hellfire
(experimental rock, jazz fusion)
black midi - Welcome To Hell
2. Guerilla Toss - Famously Alive
(art pop, noise rock)
Guerilla Toss - Famously Alive
1. HEALTH - DISCO4 :: PART II
(metal, industrial, electronic)
HEALTH x THE BODY :: AD 1000

hiiii ok double reminder today because there's two whole songs to talk about lucky meeee
one: wayv!!! is back!!!! there is a new wayv song!!!!!!!! holy shit they're actually having a comeback!!!!!!!!! i love the song, i love how they managed to make the video look so glamorous even without the fifteen outfits and sets that I've come to expect from k pop mvs. but what's throwing me a bit is that the word "only" is a way of adding emphasis in indian english (side note: I've recently learned that india has the highest number of english speakers in the world, so it's surprising to me that indian english isn't more widely understood). like for example you could say "127 dream and wayv are all only nct only", where the "only" is just a way to emphasise the word nct. kinda like the word "just" in british/american english. so the title diamonds only makes me feel like I'm at a wedding and watching two aunties trying to one-up each other about their fancy jewelry and i find the idea of the wayv boys being at all involved in that scenario the funniest thing ever
two: Vernon released a solo song!! it's angsty and pop punk-y and he said he was inspired by Avril Lavigne and he's just so right for all of it. although my one critique is they beeped the fuck. let. idols. swear. please. i really like the song, but god imagine the absolute power of it if they let Vernon say fuck
Hiii! Yes! They've finally put out a song in fifty years and I love it. The video was very pleasing to my eyes. And that's cool I didn't know that, but it makes sense since I think correct me if I'm wrong India is one of the most populated countries? But oh my gosh I can specifically see Xiaojun and Ten in that kind of scenario. I watch a few Indian YouTubers and I recognize exactly what you're talking about. But I never really noticed it just understood it. I do that with a lot of English dialects and accents even if I'm not use to it I can understand it Like when Chan and Felix were talking about Aussie slang on the Zach Sang show. Even before they explained it I figured out what they meant. But I also watch a ton of Australian YouTubers.
And okay Vernon's song okay first of all for whatever reason Vernon is the only Seventeen member I keep up with and follow. I think I wasnt ready to commit to the full group but I adored Vernon predebut and stuck with him. Anyway watching Vernon's music video was the first time in my history as a kpop fan that I literally fangirled, screamed and almost cried. Like you don't even understand. Vernon brought me so much joy and took me back to middle school and love the song so much. He mastered that genuine pop punk sound and it spoke to me soul. And I agree let Vernon say the fuck word! Like i was literally squealing oh my gosh. And it would be Vernon of all people to do it. You have no idea how happy the song made me. I always isolate kpop from me like it's not exactly a genre I deemed that saved my life but pop punk post hardcore and metalcore are and I just never thought a genre that I like but never connected connected with would meld with the genre that means so much to me. Like to explain what different genres mean to me. It's post hardcore\metalcore\pop punk are who I am like that's me as a person. Country is my heart, pop is my bedroom, kpop is a wall in bedroom, and hip hop is my best friend's house I don't go there often but when I do its a vibe, fun and nothing but women. And Lana Del Rey and Taylor Swift are my best friend. They're their own genre of music. Anyway I love the song, I love Vernon. It does Lowkey have Lil Huddy vibes but I love lil Huddy so it's chill.

» Frida Kahlo

Void Of Vision - What I’ll Leave Behind
One of my favorite things is seeing a band I already really enjoy progressing into something better, especially when they chance their sound. A lot of bands get worse when they change their sound, but some get a lot better, whether they find a sweet spot in doing something new and keeping what works, or discovering something that works insanely well, and keeping that. Aussie metalcore band Void Of Vision is one of those bands that seems to have only gotten better with time, because their new album is their best yet, especially when it’s got both a heavier and more accessible sound at the same time. I already really enjoyed this band, specifically with 2019’s Hyperdaze, but this album is even better.
At only a half hour, this record weaves through metalcore, alt-metal, industrial, and some synth-pop. That last one is so strange to say, but there are some moments here where this record almost dives into synth-pop territory in the vein of a band like Depeche Mode. This record is unique, interesting, and a blast to listen to. It doesn’t have a whole lot going for it, at least minus a couple of key sounds, but it’s still quite fun, and it’s still interesting. The sound of nu-metalcore is really played out by this point, but this record keeps it oddly fresh. If you enjoy nu-metalcore, or you just want something with some catchiness and accessibility to it, I’d gleefully recommend this record.
With all that said, however, I do have some slight qualms with it that don’t prevent me from loving this album, per se, but they prevent me from making this an album I’ll highlight at the end of the year. I can see this being an honorable mention, but not quite on the list proper. The album doesn’t have too many discernible hooks, so despite the songs having a synth-pop sound in spots, they aren’t that memorable, but I still have a blast listening to this. The breakdowns still hit hard, and the hooks are fine, but they don’t amount to anything substantial. Everything is done well, and for fans of nu-metal and nu-metalcore, I’d easily recommend this.
