The Fae Court - Military:

The Fae Court of the Wanderer, is many things... and thanks to its not-so-insignificant interest in remaining armed and protected, situated as it is mainly within a storied citadel at the heart of a magical mountain... surrounded by hundreds of acres of magically potent fae-monster-infested woodlands, and separated into its own fragmented shard of reality in the Void between Worlds to boot, it is no surprise that the Martial Branch is what it is - a loose collection of well-focused and extremely talented - or perhaps dangerous - individuals all fitted under a flexible-yet-effective hierarchy and honed to a singular goal - protecting the Court, and not only in its many members or unique territory.

Knight(s): Eerie Somby (Head) [ @dethdvncer ], Leanna von Braun (Reserve) [ @automaton-otto ] As much paragons of might as effective leaders, as much one-man-armies as exemplars of the values of the Court (in theory at least), the Knights are the top of the rankings for the Court's military, and the Tip of the Spear when open battle becomes inevitable to protect it from those who would harm it or its many members. Currently, there is only one Active knight, and thus their leadership is not truly in question, but the differentiation between 'Head' Knight and other Knights will perhaps one day be tested. As powerful and deadly as they are to face one-on-one, any and all Knights of the Court of the Wanderer are technically those most heavily or closely sworn to the Lord of the Court itself - as in many ways they are one of the foremost faces of the Court by virtue of their position(s).

Marshal(s): 'Hiegau' of the Black Dogs [ @lookthedevilintheeye ] A more mixed and indirect, if no less important rank just under the Knights, a Marshal of the Fae Court of the Wanderer is effectively meant to fill two roles interchangeably - logistics officer and organizer during peace, and field-commander during wartime. While strong in their own right as a prerequisite, being a Marshal is less about being able to fight so much as being able to Lead and keep one's wits in any sort of struggle - be it maintaining standards and assignments for the many Rangers and Guards in the court, or leading them to battle against deadly odds and winning without major losses. There is only one Marshal position filled at the moment, and the Lord of the Court is eager to see another rise to the position - be it from within the Court's current ranks or otherwise.

Ranger(s): Yuugo [ @heroesxdemons ], Ulan 'La Brújula' of Tangway [ @sins-of-the-sea ], Finn Mertens [ @finncomet ] Rangers are by far the most mixed and flexible of the members of the Martial Branch of the Court, regardless of their skills. By nature, the rank of Ranger is not one of leadership but nonetheless is a position of merit and importance, as Rangers are effectively Operatives ideal for assignments of great difficulty or importance to more actively guard the Court... not only its members, but its interests and investments, even if by occasionally unsavory means. Rangers are not Knights, but rather Spies, Assassins, Bounty-Hunters, and Specialists of many kinds and fields - far from defenseless in a straight-up fight, but generally those who favor tactics and methods other than full-frontal combat to fulfill their objectives. Current rangers include - in no particular order of seniority - an expert in hunting and subduing even the toughest of monsters, an expert assassin and tracker with exceptional skill in stealth and reconnaissance, and an in-training powerhouse of an adventurer learning new skills to better round-out his repertoire in more than simple combat.

Guard(s): Theodore 'Teddy' Augustus Ramsel [ @bleedinghearth ], Mortem [ @cursedfortune ], Nikki Eryl Faden [ @wiildhearrted ] Guards are technically the lowest rank in the military-hierarchy of the Fae Court, but in many ways they remain the backbone of more than just the defenses of the Court and the Halls it is seated within. While in times of war they are both soldiers and the last lines of defense should the Halls be attacked, in times of peace any Guard of the Court is expected to have other duties to help them serve and protect those they have sworn to defend: One such guard happily serves as a de-facto daycare worker in his day-to-day life in the Court, another inspects and maintains the many Runic protections and Wards in and around the Halls, yet another extends her patrol-duties to the wild, monster-infested forests surrounding the Mountain and serves as a Game Warden of sorts to control and maintain the natural defenses and resources the forests offer. While not expected to be front-line soldiers except as a last resort, there is no real requirement or expectation of strength or power to the role, other than simple diligence and an understanding of what might be asked of a Guard in times of need - it is therefore one of the easiest positions to enter and maintain in the Court.

I think the whole editing books from the past so that they are more palatable to everyone on earth is really ridiculous. People are changing Augustus Gloop from being 'fat' to 'enormous'? That's just playing semantics. Yeah there's racist and possibly offensive content in old books; isn't the point of reading to gain a historical perspective? It's like people want to erase history. As if that will somehow improve the future. Erasing history will never improve the future. The N word is sprinkled all through the Huckleberry Finn books. Do I think it should be changed? No, not necessarily. Censorship is a slippery slope - and the whole changing stuff so it doesn't offend is a tool of fascism cloaked as benevolence. Toni Morrison and other authors in the 90s spoke about how they disagree with censorship of books and honestly, it's kind of arrogant to just change a dead author's words...that in itself is offensive. Political correctness doesn't belong in books.

The students enter the pavillion, each dressed in newly crafted equipment, appropriate for the physical activity that is present in the new program for students over fourteen: Martial Arts and Non-Magical Self-Defense. They look around, curious. They have heard of this class but it's their first time in the massive gym. This class is especially confused since they're the seventeen year olds in the Herbology and Herbology Applied to Potion Brewing course, who are usually excused from Magical Defense classes after the basic program is finished.

The pavillion they have entered is well lit, in fact, it used to be an old observatory which was abandoned after the new Astronomy and Astrology Tower and its adjacent Dome Telescope were built. The pentagonal glass panels that made the semispherical ceiling were now clean and the floor was unobstructed, the old telescope having been removed and reutilized in the Dome Telescope. Most of the floor was covered in what many recognized to be common tatami. Most of their curiosity was due to the fact that the old observatory had been under renovations since they'd left for end of year break last summer and now, in April, was finally being opened and utilized. It was a shock to find out that it'd be used for martial arts and not a new greenhouse as many had speculated (though it didn't make much sense with how the school towers threw their shadow over it for most of the day).

Near the center stood the Headmistress Phyön and the new instructor, who no one recognized.

The students gathered round the two teachers, murmuring and hushing at each other.

"Good evening, students" the Headmistress began, speaking over the buzzing of the teenagers in front of her, "welcome to your first class of Martial Arts and Non-Magical Self-Defense. This is Augustus Somar, he'll be your teacher for this trimester, after which we'll see if the program is of use and is bringing good to all you students. He might stay afterwards. Regardlessx treat him with the respect you'd treat me and any other member of the faculty. Mr. Somar, if you please."

The new teacher introduced himself.

"Hello, everybody. As Headmistress Phyön said, I'm Mr. Somar, I'll be in charge of teaching you the basics of martial arts and self defense, during this trimester we will indulge on-"

As he spoke of the program he'd prepared the students droned out his voice, more interested in taking in his appearance. Augustus was not old but certainly old enough to be the father of an adult. Coukd easily pass as a young child's grandfather. Still, he was clearly in shape, his posture was steady and he looked at them confidently.

What shocked them most was the lack of magic. Most wizards can sense when someone else is like them. It might be as simple as a lock of hair that seems to move even if there is no wind, an eye that looks too shiny for the light in the room, little quirks of the hand, or something more noticeable like a face birthmark or charms tied to the belt. Mr. Somar, however, had none. His voice was not as melodical as a wizard's usually was, his hair was quite plain, not showing a life of its own and, most of all, there was no pull between their magical essences.

A student inquired on this, abruplty interrupting the educator:

"You're not a wizard, are you?"

For a second everyone was quiet.

"Syrah! That is a very inappropriate way to ask Mr. Somar about such a topic!"

"But, Professor Phyön, it's true, I'm sure I'm not the only one that understood it! How come a non-magical human was told about us? Why not have us be taught by another wizard? Why are we even learning martial arts? We're Herbology students, for crying o-"

Mr. Somar looked at the ceiling, seemingly searching for something in the clouds. "That young lady died in the streets during a date with Perseus. They were attacked by a pair of thugs with knives and she took one to the neck. Young Somar was gravely injured and ended up having to use magic, which landed him in court and, now, in prison. He'll be let out in a few months but ever since that tragedy Mr. Somar, Eleanora's parents and I have been thinking of how to avoid a similar occurrence. Two years ago we came up with this prigram and, now that the old observatory has been converted, we can finally begin." some students were crying, remembering Eleanora or suddenly recalling the news of the imprisonment of one od the best Astrology students, nearly three years back. The setting of the classes now carried a new meaning to them.

Mr. Somar took the collective silence as a chance to speak.

"This is not exactly a secret, though we do ask that you do not spread this with your younger colleagues. We do not wish to scare them. This class is for you and for your safety. That's we care about the most."

After the dramatic exchange, Mr. Somar explained once again what his plan for the next three months was and the class managed to fit in some basic exercises in the few minutes left until they had to leave for their next class.

In the days that followed each member of the Herbology and Herbology Applied to Potion Brewing class visited Eleanora's portrait and they all sent a collective letter to Perseus, letting him in on the new activity and giving him promises of help when he returned as a free man.
