Behind Emerald, the door clicked open.
“I believe I have a few hours left,” she said, not even bothering to look away from the window. “And I’m not going to practice the stupid speech.”
“I wouldn’t either.”
Augustus’s deep voice snapped her out of her daze, and she shot up, nearly stumbling off the bench. “Shit, I thought you were Cashmere or Xanthia coming to yell at me some more.”
“Cashmere doesn’t yell at you,” he said, rolling his eyes as he sat down next to her. He rested his arm on the back of the bench, just inches from her shoulders, as he joined her looking out the window. “She’s just firm.”
“Firmly a pain in my ass.”
He chuckled, the low sound rumbling through the bench. “Want to talk to someone a little less firm about it?”
“Not really.”
“Figured not, but Valor was getting twitchy about you wandering the train alone. I think he figured you might try to jump out an unlocked window or something.”
Emerald turned away from the window to give him a skeptical look. “These windows don’t even open.”
“I did tell him that, but you know how Valor gets with you.” He chuckled again, dropping his arm from the bench to around her shoulders in a comforting squeeze. “He was ready to come hunt you down himself, but I said I’d take this one.”
“Oh goodie.” She relaxed into his touch almost reluctantly, hating just how much it really did make her feel better to have him there. “Now, I have two overprotective big brother figures.”
Augustus scoffed. “Maybe if you count Gloss, but I’m sure as hell not one of them.” He grinned, his blue eyes sparkling with a hint of mischief. “Overprotective, maybe, but I haven’t thought of you as a little sister in a long time, Em.”

there's something i find particularly disturbing about district 1 career tributes.
white. blonde. blue-eyed. conventionally attractive. all of them. we have a relatively large sample size with district 1, four named and described characters in the trilogy and a fifth in bonus material and none of them, not one, breaks that mold. none of the other districts are that homogeneous. sure, there are "looks" associated with each district, you can generally tell where someone is from by looking at them, but none of them are quite so consistent.
someone is hand-selecting these kids. "attractiveness" has got to be part of the selection process in district 1. do they choose kids who look like that to train? or do they just give them more encouragement to volunteer?
and they're all loyalists, too. or seem to be. glimmer and marvel seemed eager to volunteer and were ruthless killers in the games, cashmere and gloss couldn't be trusted with the rebel plot, and augustus braun was popular, in part, for being an outspoken patriot.
and i just can't stop thinking about district 1's industry. they have made themselves one of the wealthiest and most secure districts by producing luxury goods for the capitol.
and sometimes i just think. i don't know. maybe they do.

summary: Johanna arrives in Capitol after the war and finds out some horrible news.
wc: 3.2k
warnings: mdni, angst, use of y/n, character death, grief, not proofread.
~~~~~
Watching from the sidelines was agony. If it were for that stupid Block Test, Johanna would be storming The Capitol with you, with Finnick, with the damn Mockingjay herself. Yet, here she was in the hospital staring at the white tiled walls. She didn’t know if you were okay or not and it drove her up the wall.
Communication between the group could not be achieved without interference from the Capitol. The ‘fallen tribute’ propo was played and it nearly caused Johanna to faint. The District 7 girl marched down to Beetee and demanded to know the truth. He had shown her the hacked camera system in the Capitol where everyone in the team had gone underground except for the guy that Peeta pushed into the tar.
She replayed the seconds of you walking by the camera near the middle of the group. You had held your weapon in your right hand and your left hand fiddled with the blue hospital bracelet that Johanna had given you.
You were still alive but heading deeper into the heart of Panem. It wasn’t going to be easy for you and the team. Johanna believed in you, after all, you were nicknamed the Career Grim Reaper as you ended the 6 year career streak between Enobaria and Augustus Braun. In your Hunger Games, you won with a scythe, chopping people’s bodies and head clean in half. With the added bonus of your taller than average height of 5’9” for a woman you could reach enemies from further. As for close range combat, beetee made sure you were able to retract the staff and have your scythe double as a sickle.
A few days later was when Snow lost all his supporters by bombing his own citizens. Johanna could care less, about them. They all deserved to burn in her eyes. He was captured by the rebels and Coin wanted all the victors to watch his executions. Alas, that event would come later as members of squad 451 were injured.
She was flown to the Capitol in a helicarrier with Beetee, Haymitch and Annie. Johanna nearly threw Annie out of it for annoying her. Annie’s nervous habit of biting her nails earned glares from the district 7 victor. Coin and her sources never told them who was injured.
When the helicarrier landed, the victors were escorted through the mansion. It was like the opposite of the rescue mission where she and Annie were in the hospital beds and Finnick and you were the ones running to them.
Annie started running first, desperate to see if her husband was okay. It made Johanna run behind her to try and find you. Annie barged through the door finding Finnick with a cast on his left arm and torso. “Finnick!”
“Annie!” He held her with the same intensity he did in District 13, the same passion on their wedding day. The kissed without a care in the world as Johanna searched the room.
Her heart rate picked up the longer she spent without you. “Where’s Y/n?”
Finnick turned over and gave her a solemn look with tear stains on his cheek. “I’m sorry.” He whispered.
“What are you talking about. Where is Y/n?”
Annie had pulled away slightly curious as to his answer of where you were. In Finnick’s mind, he was reliving the moment after the Quell, when you woke up on the helicarrier and asked where Johanna was. It broke his heart because in both cases, he would have to deliver a painful blow. “She’s- she’s dead. Y/n’s dead.”
Annie gasped throwing her hand over her mouth. The room ran cold and Johanna scoffed. “If this is your idea of a joke, it’s sick.”
“You know this is something I would never joke about.” Finnick replies and Annie begins to cry.
Johanna shakes her head. “No I don’t believe you. Just bring me to her. I want to see her.”
“There is no body Johanna. She was blown up.”
“She can’t have just left nothing!” Johanna yelled, tears threatening to fall down her face. “What about her weapon, a scorched piece of clothes. The hospital bracelet I gave her as a token. Something.”
Finnick’s face twisted in pain remembering your last moments. “Nothing.” He said with his shaky voice. Unlike Johanna, he let the tears start rolling down his cheek. Annie reaches over and wipes his tears.
Johanna glared at the lovers tender moments. Oh how she wanted that more than anything right now. After all you and her have been through, that much was owed to her. She pushes her feelings down with a deep breath. “Tell me- tell me what happened. Please.”
Finnick closed his eyes and winced. Johanna saw him thumb the small robe he had with him. “We escaped underground to rest for a bit. We woke to lizard mutts tracking Katniss’ scent but it didn’t matter, they ripped through anything that moved.
“We lost most of the district 13 soldiers before we decided to get out of the sewers. They had us at a choke point, we were surrounded and we had to go up an old rusty ladder.
“We were one of the last ones to go up. When I climbed. The mutts pulled me down by my shoulder and parts of the ladder with me. I heard the crack in my arm and I thought I was dead. Y/n saved my life, she killed the mutts around me with her scythe, threw me over her shoulder and ran. The camera crew shot at the mutts behind us but they kept coming.
“Y/n got us to another ladder and pushed me up. Pollux and Gale were there to pull me out of the sewers.”Finnick paused as he began to cry again. “I thought- I thought she was right behind me but all I heard was her screaming. She was nowhere in sight. The mutts had gotten to her and they were ripping her apart. Katniss blew them up and put Y/n out of her misery.”
Finnick barely finished retelling your last moments before Johanna stormed out of the infirmary. Her feet brought her to a room of glass vases and ceramic podiums. They must’ve had some significance to Snow but she didn’t care. Her breath quickened. She swiped at the glass and watched them shatter on the ground. She shoved the podiums over and let them crack.
Johanna rampaged through the room throwing and kicking anything that could break. The glass, the clay. She hated it all. You were dead only several hours before the war ended. It wasn’t fair, of all people, you didn’t deserve to die. You were good. Johanna fell to her knees, not caring about the broken glass cutting up her legs. She clumped a bunch in her hands and watched as the red liquid cascaded down to the floor. The red contrasting against the white marble floor as pure as snow.
Snow. Everything went back to him. Her pain, her losses: Her family, you. You. Your suffering. Your agony. Your death. It was all his fault. Johanna grunted in anger before turning from the room. She didn’t care if Katniss wanted to be the one to kill snow, Johanna had every right to kill him.
Before she could though, one of the training doctors saw her bloody hand and Johanna was taken to the infirmary. They were gentle with her and she hated it. Memories of defying the District 13 doctors swirled in her mind. She had refused to allow treatment in fear of it being a facade. She was afraid to be hurt again and you stayed by her side glaring at the Doctors who would cause Johanna to even wince.
The cut on her hand didn’t hurt despite the amount of blood coming through. The pain came from her chest. How it beat against her rib cage like it was trapped and trying to squeeze through the ridges and jump out of her body. Johanna even felt her heart beat in her throat and it made her nauseous. Her breath quickened as she tried to swallow the lump in her throat.
She stepped away quickly from the doctors, not caring if they hadn’t finished patching her up. Something overcame her, despite her hate for the Hunger Games, she went to the library where all the games were stored in the archive. Johanna cradled your taped game in her bloody hand.
There was a small lounge area with a television and the District 7 victor sat firmly in it watching your game. You were 16 at the time and besides the baby fat you almost looked the same now. The same muscular features highlighted your tall stature. She spent 3 hours watching you and your games and when it was done, she rewinded all the way to the beginning to watch it again.
Another reason for your nickname being the Career Grim Reaper was that you killed them all. You managed to join the careers and at night during your watch, The other district 9 tribute emerged from the bushes and together you slit their throats. The other two barely had time to react to the cannons before you sliced their heads off.
Your partner tried to get the upper hand on you when you shook hands but you quickly held him in a choke hold yelling at him to stop. He kept thrashing and managed to stab you in the arm. With great reluctance in your face and a quick apology, you snapped his neck.
The 68th Hunger Games was replayed a few times before someone came looking for Johanna. Being the stubborn and cranky woman she was, she stayed in the single seat, ignoring her stomach’s call for food just to see you. She could feel your spirit and your strength as if you were sitting next to her. It felt comforting.
The house maid brought her food at Finnick’s request and Johanna proceeded to ‘rot’ in front of the televisions. She only got up to use the restroom for the next week. Then a district 13 soldier came to ask her to a meeting. She didn’t want to go through the trouble of finding you tape again so she pocketed it.
She was greeted by some of the other victors, Finnick, Annie, Beetee, Peeta, Haymitch and surprisingly Enobaria. Katniss walked in and Johanna glared daggers at the mockingjay. That brainless girl was the reason you’re dead, but the death of her sister enough pain for her. She’d know the meaning of loss for the rest of her life.
President Coin gathered the remaining victors and with a short protest, Johanna found that Enobaria, along with herself, Peeta, and Annie, they were granted immunity. Shes still trying to to kill Enobaria, she was probably lying comfortably in her bed while everyone else fought for their freedom. She proposed a vote for a symbolic hunger games.
This was unfair. You were a victor you should’ve been there at the vote. It was your right. It was upsetting how you were hours away from a stop at this table. Regardless, in her anger and revenge she votes yes in hopes that Snow’s granddaughter gets reaped and he has to watch her die.
After the vote, came the execution. Everyone far and wide came to witness the death of a tyrannical dictator. Imagine being hated so much that everyone comes to witness your execution. Katniss broke her promise again! Instead of killing Snow, she killed Coin. Across the way, she could hear Snow’s maniacal laughter. Johanna clenched her fists and she felt the glass piece from last week cut her hand. The girl quickly pulled it out and flung at Snow’s head.
She watched a brilliant spray of blood and his laughter cease. People shoved her aside as they stormed to get their hands on President Snow. If he wasn’t dead from the glass in his face, he’d be dead from the crowd. Either way, he wouldn’t get the last laugh.
One of the guards, yanked her from the crowd and pulled her to safety. Yeah, protect the victor. Where was this level of security for you? They sent the victors back to their districts and before she got on hers, Finnick and Annie approached her.
“We know how much you love the forest, so when you need a break with watching that tape, eat something okay. We’re going to figure things out on our end so we can go to District 7 with you.”
“I’m not a child Finnick, I’ll be fine.”
“Don’t fight us on this. If I come over and smell the stench of rotting flesh I will bring you back from hell to kill you myself.” Finnick stepped closer to threaten her.
“Really? Threatening a victor?”
“Yes, how low of me. I’m not threatening a victor, I’m threatening my best friend.”
Johanna snapped her head at him as he used those words. If looks could kill, Finnick would’ve been in hell. “Don’t call me that! We both know Y/n was your best friend and I swear if you erase her…”
“She saved my life. I’m not erasing her. It’s just that she’s de- I can have two best friends.”
“No you can’t.”
“Okay fine. I’m threatening my best friend’s lover. I owe her that much, to take care of you.”
On the train ride home, she watched your game again. Feeling prouder and prouder of what you had done. Watching you at that young age, you were like a stranger to her. A stranger she knew everything about.
She knew your hobby which was beer crafting. She knew your family consisting of just your grandfather who passed away at the old age of 83 a few months after the 73rd Hunger Games. She knew how the rest of them died, your mom dying in childbirth and your father dying a couple months after from heartbreak. She knew about your spunk, any thought you said, you said without muttering. She knew about your habit, like how you’d pick at the skin around your finger nails or the way your eye twitches when someone chews with their mouth open. She knew of your fears, like your fear of the dark and being alone with no one to love you. She knew your favorite food, her own Marionberry pie with a bit of ice cream on the top. She knew the way you’d pick up the telephone by saying hello twice in quick succession. She even knew your fighting style and that you preferred close quarter combat.
After finding out about your passing she had yet to cry. Annie had cried, Finnick cried, Katniss almost cried. Hell even Enobaria cried. Her voice had broke on the phone a few months after returning home and she cried to Johanna. She just pulled the phone away from her ear and brought it back when she thought Enobaria was done. Alas, she was still in tears. Johanna managed a ‘there there’ and called it a day.
It wasn’t because she didn’t miss you she missed you everyday. She just couldn’t cry even if she wanted to. It’s as if she’s wasted all her tears before ever truly knowing you. She watched your games less and less throughout the years, and the Odair’s even named their daughter after you.
There were days where she couldn’t get up because of the heartache and then days like today she hadn’t thought of you so far. Finnick and Annie had their kids over for her birthday tomorrow and Johanna played with them as they splashed through the splash pad. Annie slowly got Johanna to be comfortable with the water.
She was turning 24 tomorrow and it dawned on Johanna that you never got to be 24, dying a few months short. You would never get the chance to be 24, 25, 26 and so on. She didn’t know what overcame her, before she knew it her tears fell out of her eyes torrentially.
Wiping at her tears, Johanna grew crazy when they wouldn’t stop. The time for crying was long over. It’s been over for 3 years. She was okay now, Johanna was sure of it. The weight of grief had lifted off her chest already, but now she felt it all. You were forever going to be 23 and she was going to be older than you now. The last time she saw you in person was when you told her you’d ‘see her soon’. She never got to see you again and anytime she conjured up an image of you, it was the 16 year old stranger. It was unfair.
She bit her lip to stop herself but the moment your namesake saw the glistening skin under her eye, her small hands shook the victor’s shoulder asking, “Aunty Jo? Are you okay?”
“Y/n I’m okay.” She looked into the child’s eye and burst into tears. Johanna pulls Finnick and Annie’s second child in for a hug and bawls repeating your name. The parents snapped into action when they heard the crying only to find Johanna in tears.
It was Annie that arrived first. Her daughter stood there confused and wouldn’t move when Annie tried to pull her away. Your namesake wrapped her arms around Johanna to let her cry. Finnick arrived shortly after seeing Annie pat her on the back. He mouthed ‘what happened’ to his wife but she only shrugged.
The couple were at a loss for words, but luckily, as parents, they knew what to do. They tried to pry Johanna from their daughter but she held on. It wasn’t until later at dinner when Johanna spoke up.
“I don’t want to celebrate my birthday.”
Finnick and Annie darted their eyes between each other and their honorary oldest child. “Why not?” Johanna mumbled her answer. “What was that?”
“I said I don’t want to be older than Y/n! I don’t want to be 24 when she’s stuck at 23! She had so much ahead of her. I’m forgetting what she looks like, what she sounds like. I miss her laugh. At this point she might as well be a stranger. I had no right to cry.”
“Everyone has a right to cry Johanna, we do it. Tears don’t make you weak and you can designate time to cry but it doesn’t mean grieving is over. It comes and goes. We tell our kids about Y/n, they remember her through stories. They practically know everything about her at least from what we knew of her. We keep her alive that way.” Annie tells as Johanna pouts.
“It’s unfair.” Johanna says.
“Auntie Jo.” Your namesake called. “Mommy and daddy say we live for the people who cannot.” Johanna smiles hearing your words echo throughout the Odair family.
“Yeah even if we never met old Y/n, it’s like we still know her!” Their son joined in.
That was who you are now, a stranger the people around you know everything about and although it has its sad moments you live on through memory.
Notes:
The Victor of the 39th Game, Reese Arrowroot, was assigned male at birth and when they were reaped they were reaped as such. After winning their games they came out as genderfluid, but in terms of Hunger Games situations they fill the function of a male victor still.
Carrick Manannán turned 19 during his games making him the oldest victor to win.
In total there are 37 male victors (or filling the function of male) and 36 female victors. By the time of the Third Quarter Quell there are 30 female victors and 28 male victors left alive.
The first ten victors (with Lucy Gray presumed dead), Florence Bitterroot, Devante Ford, Kaiona Minamoto, Magnolia Tian, Valentino Altamura, and Paris Doré are dead by the time of the Third Quarter Quell.
Poppy Rustweed is the Female Morphling and Christopher Mercury is the Male Morphling.
Kaiona Minamoto is descended from Native Hawaiians who fled to the west coast before the fall of America, as well as being Japanese on her father's side. Hafsa Mecca is Arabic and part of small group in District 6 that still practice Islam. Paisley Nainsook is of Indian descent. Pyro Hoshino is of Japanese descent. Magnolia Tian is of Delta Chinese descent. Obviously there are more poc victors but I thought these names would stick out immediately and I wanted to give explanations.
#thg#the hunger games#catching fire#thg victors#thg oc#thg ocs#thg victor ocs#a lot of these victors play big roles in my big thg fic#it is temporarily titled 'this man is dead' and it's everlark dark romance#maybe there's a polycule in it i haven't decided yet
The Battle of Leipzig, October, 1813
By mid-October, Napoleon gathered all his forces near Leipzig, where on the 16th the started a battle that would later be called the Battle of the Nations .
Jan Czesław Moniuszko, Prince Józef at Leipzig
Commanding the Poles incorporated into the Grand Army as the 8th Corps, Prince Joseph defended the village of Markkleeberg south of the city. As he reported to Napoleon, on the 16th
"the enemy did not gain an inch of ground […] the army showed admirable zeal and endurance […] but I lost 1/3 of my men and I have no ammunition."
And on that very day, the 16th of October, the Emperor appointed Prince Poniatowski a Marshal of France, with the official nomination taking place a day later.
Prince Józef Poniatowski being presented the marshals baton, Reville's engraving after Martinet
As diarists recall, prince Józef received both the news about the nomination and the announcement that followed quite calmly, or even indifferently. However, he considered that moment not appropriate to insult the emperor with a refusal. So first Poniatowski asked consent of Frederick Augustus, King of Saxony and Duke of Warsaw, to accept the nomination. Then he hastened assure his subordinates that
"whatever happens he would never replace the Polish uniform with another one."
Also anticipating that the news of his new appointment might not receive support in Warsaw, prince Józef asked Tomasz Ostrowski
"to send to the capital as early as possible, by a known means, an explanation of the circumstances and an assurance everyone that if there is no war for Poland, no one will see him wearing anything but a civilian clothes".
Together with this, however, Poniatowski promised that in any case he would have to escort Napoleon to France. As for the global situation, the 17th of October was a day of rest and re-ranking of troops for both the Frenchmen and the Coalition , thus there was almost no fighting then.
Polish infantry fighting at Connewitz-Probstheida, a drawing by Raffet
On October 18, Prince Joseph was defending Probstheida, a village southeast of Leipzig. But that day the fighting was even more fierce than before. The French troops held their positions, but by the end of the day they were exhausted and depleted as a result of the intensifying attacks of the Allies, who, in addition, had on the previous day received reinforcements in the form of General Bennigsen's Czech Army and the Army of the North commaded by Bernadotte. Considering all this, that evening Napoleon considered the battle a lost cause. So, he then began organizing the retreat. The corps of General Reynier, Marshal Macdonald and Prince Poniatowski were to defense the rear guard of the French. They were to hold the city of Leipzig for 24 hours for the Grande Armée to gain as much time as possible.
Napoleon resigns after the Battle of Leipzig, From a painting by Ludwik Braun
Having arrived in Leipzig at nine o'clock in the evening, Napoleon stayed at the hotel "At the Prussian king", where he asked Prince Józef to come. They then had, according to Baron Agathon Fain's account, the following conversation:
- Prince, you will defend the southern suburbs. – Sire! I have very few men, most of my corps have, following Prince Berthier's orders, crossed the Elsther at night. - How many Poles are there with you? - My usual escort, i.e. two hundred of the Krakuses, the same number of cuirassiers, staff and several cavalry units, in total about eight hundred people. - Well, this will be the way for you to defend the southern suburbs and cover the retreat of the army with the Prince of Tarentum… For 800 Poles are worth 8,000 other soldiers. - Your Majesty can trust us, we will cover the retreat, even if every one of us dies!
These were the last words the prince addressed to the emperor. After saying goodbye he looked "preoccupied and sad". What's more, that meeting was probably the last time Poniatowski and Napoleon seeing each other...
January Suchodolski, Napoleon and Józef Antoni Poniatowski at the Battle of Leipzig
On the morning of the last day of the battle, Polish troops were defending a section of the southern suburbs near the Peters Thor gate. Moreover, that time they had not only to fight the enemy, but also there intensified clashes with the locals, who were shooting at the retreating units from the windows.
Author Unknown, Prince Józef Poniatowski during the Battle of Leipzig
At about 11:00 Prince Józef found it impossible to conduct further defensive operations in this place and ordered a retreat. The Poles moved along the esplanade, where, near the Wasserkunst fountain, they fight the enemy in an organized manner for the last time.
Jan Chełmiński, Prince Józef Poniatowski at the head of the troops at Leipzig
During that skirmish Poniatowski was probably wounded (probably not first time). As Klemens Kołaczkowski recalled:
He received a wound in the hand from a rifle bullet; he ordered it to be treated, got back on the horse and, holding his hand on a scarf, he did not stop fighting.
Then the Poles, having left the city walls, were looking for a crossing. The first on their way was the Pleisse River, deprived of all bridges on Napoleon's orders. Kołaczkowski:
Prince Poniatowski <…> was exposed to the fire of enemy tirailleurs, in dense troops approaching from all sides. General Bronikowski, standing next to the prince, advised him to seek salvation by swimming. But the prince answered him quickly: "One must die bravely!" (Il faut mourir en brave - AS) He ordered the rest of the escort to attack enemy tirailleurs one more time, but that managed to stop their advance only for a moment. There was not a single moment to lose! In this last resort, the prince finally followed the opinion of the officers surrounding him, mounted his horse and jumped into the river with him!
Jan Bogumił Plersch, Prince Poniatowski crossing Pleisse
The water was flooding the banks high up; the horse, carried away by its momentum, could not reach the shore. At this sight, captain Blechamps from the staff rushes after the prince, helps him swim and get to the opposite shore.
But there was one more river to cross – the Elster. Which had also been devoid of all its bridges except one. But even that one was earlier that day blown up by mistake when a significant part of the French were still on the other bank.
Retreat of the French from Leipzig, October 1813, an English engraving
What's more, in German Elster means "magpie". And according to legend, a gypsy woman once told Prince Joseph that he would die because of a magpie. And that's how it happened.
Tadeusz Korpal, Prince Poniatowski at Leipzig
Kołaczkowski:
The prince was walking on foot through the gardens lying between Elster and Pleisse: here, he was shot in the side by a rifle bullet for the second time and fell into the arms of the officers surrounding him. However, he soon regained consciousness and, with the help of his adjutant, mounted his horse with difficulty, swaying in the saddle. The Poles started to appeal to him to take care of himself and, handing over his command to another general, to preserve himself for the homeland. But the prince's courage seemed to increase with danger. "No! no!" he shouted "God has entrusted me with the honor of the Poles, I will only give it to God". The engineer's officer comes running and points to the most convenient place to cross; the prince, walking along the river bank, heads in that direction; but when he notices the enemy unit blocking his path, he shouts loudly: "There they are!" He turns his horse and rushes to Elster. Weakened by his wounds, he can no longer steer his horse, but the beast can only follow the current and cannot climb the high, precipitous shore. All this happened under a hail of bullets. At that final moment, the prince receives his third wound, slips from his horse and, carried away by the rush of the water, begins to sink. The good Blechamps comes to the aid again. In noble zeal, he throws himself into the river and grasps the prince. He was seen holding his arms and trying to lift the prince's head above the water, but the efforts of this noble man were in vain. They both disappeared forever in the currents of the treacherous river! Such was the death of a Polish hero, a beloved leader who preferred death to ignominious captivity.
Prince Poniatowski at Leipzig (enlarged)
According to another legend, at Leipzig prince Józef was to see the notorious White Lady of the Poniatowskis for the last time.
They didn't know we were seeds
Chapter 10
Lucy Winters belongs to @emotionalcadaver
Cw: mentions of death, suicide
Taglist: @justrainandcoffee @emotionalcadaver @peakyswritings @call-sign-shark
Augustus Braun is the winner of game 67, he was made for Capitol Couture which was material to get people hyped for the movies.
Telling his mother everything feels like a great relief.
He doesn’t leave much detail out of how his relationship with Eva began. He had never told her about what the Capitol does to Victors, he had never told her about Snow’s visit and his attempt to kill Eva.
“It wasn’t supposed to happen, but it did, mom. I know she killed Laurie; I know the games haunt her just as they haunt me, but being with her has made it all bearable.” Because he never realized how alone he was until he woke up that Monday morning knowing he’d have to leave.
Their lives and world were hell, but every second he spends with her on her farm is by far the best moments of peace he’s had since his games 7 years ago.
“Neither of us had a choice in that arena. She didn’t want to kill Laurie any more than I wanted to kill all those kids, even Juno.” He’d been trained all his life for them and when the moment of truth comes, you realize it’s all bullshit. That they made you kill for so called glory and in the end, you were nothing but an object to entertain them. “I know you can’t forgive her, and we both understand why you can’t, but it won’t change my feelings for her.
I love her.”
His mother sighs in acceptance and speaks. “Out of all the girls in the world, you had to go with that one, kid.”
He loves his mother, knows she’s a good woman and stronger than anyone gives her credit for, but she won’t move him to break things off with Eva no matter how dreadful things get.
“If it makes you feel better, I don’t think she’s forgiven herself for it. She actually tried to deny the games a victor, but the Gamemakers were ordered to revive her or risk punishment.” The young man admits knowing all his secrets are safe with her.
“A rebel as well, oh joy.” His mother’s sarcasm reminds him he never got around to asking Lyme for what she sought out Eva for. It wasn’t just for him; Shelby was still a criminal and had bought those lands for a reason.
He couldn’t risk a visit to Eva now that every district is crawling with peacekeepers, he’ll have to wait until they reunite on July 5th for the 67th Hunger Games. He’s counting the days to see her, even if it means having to see children go off to fight and die.
Strange how he’s no longer seeing the games as he used to. Whether this new outlook is good or not waits to be seen.
July 5th comes and the first words he says when he finds Eva after the Tribute Parade are: “I love you.”
Took him long enough if you ask him.
He doesn’t bring up his mother, not today at least.
While their tributes go down to train, they make use of his empty suite. Matty had joined her as a mentor and while he’d be schmoozing sponsors in case their tributes live long enough to need one, his floor was closer.
She’s set foot in some of these, not this one though. Enobaria was not very friendly, and Lyme usually went to her floor instead.
“Wish I could take you to my cabin instead of this place.” Jack admits when he waves the Avoxes away and one of them is bold enough to wink at them as they agree to keep their secret. They like him, he’s boisterous and strangely carefree, knows when to keep his mouth shut too.
“Me too, shame travel between districts is forbidden. Who knows President Snow can add that to his campaign promises this year.” The left earring from the set Wiress gifted her pings as it detects several devices trained on them. The rebels had many victors in its lists, it made sense that they would join up. Something worse than living the games was sending two children to die year after fucking year.
Jack catches on quickly that they can’t speak about it here.
Her balcony was safe, the rooftop as well. Haymitch wouldn’t mind, he’s too out if it to even know they’ve been there. Cashmere’s dressing room was the only safe place in the entire suite.
Eva wonders if 2 had a nook or cranny that’s empty of cameras or microphones. She’d need to find it first and show it to Jack. It was why she’d accepted his invitation to have breakfast here.
He gave her a tour of the place, it was finer than 10’s floor. Decorated with the colors and some aesthetics associated with their district, with all the portraits of their victors scattered about. Jack looks so young in his portrait, reminds her of the boy from 1 everyone’s betting on.
Augustus Braun would win, this year the children reaped were on the younger side, hungrier because of the extreme weather that ravaged the country this spring. Even 2 had a tornado this year.
But 1 and 2 don’t know suffering like the rest of them, they are allowed to store food for this, they have enough to rebuild and act as if nothing happened.
Jack had learned to scavenge from her, how to survive without someone sending you food because even in the arena their sponsors fed them. He’d taught her how to hunt, how to wield a knife for other than cooking.
They could make it if it came to war. Running was out of the question; they’d be dead from exposure or bullet wounds before they got anywhere.
But she’s not been able to bring up the secret rebel society she joined just so she could play house with him every other weekend.
The only place without any sort of device spying on them was the sauna this floor had. And she tells him so.
“My mom thinks you’re a rebel, I’m starting to think she might be right.” He says revealing his mother’s feelings about their relationship.
She expected as much, and she reminded Jack she doesn’t mind it.
“If it makes you feel better, I didn’t know I was being recruited until Lyme showed up at my house.” Eva had wanted to tell him, just never found the moment. Didn’t want to ruin their happiness like that. “There’s many of us in it, Shelby is one of them too. Its why he gave me the farm, to gain a foothold in my district.”
Jack won’t tell, he’s not like that.
“They could kill you, Evie. What happens when Shelby gets taken down like Luca? What happens when it fails?” He voices the same worries she’s had all this time.
“But what if it doesn’t? Don’t you want to live in a Panem where we can be together freely, where we won’t have to send children to die for something they didn’t do? I know the risks, Jack, believe me, I do.” She had allowed herself to hope when he began to come without fail and imagined a life together with him.
A life where they wouldn’t have to leave the farm fearing they’d be caught, a life where they’d have a family together and not worry their children will have to brave an arena. Where no one would face what they had, where no one starved to death or died for knowing they deserve better.
“I won’t say anything about this, but I have my family to think of, Evie! I can’t do that Gina or my mom. You don’t know what they do to people in 2.” There is true fear in his eyes, something that makes her feel as if she doesn’t know what the Capitol is capable of.
“I understand.”
They don’t speak to each other until the games are in full swing. He claims he’s busy training his tributes, but she knows better than to believe that. Part of her fears that he won’t ever come to the farmhouse again, especially as the games draw to an end and he refuses to even meet with her in private.
“He’ll come around, Miss. Smith. They all do.” It’s not Shelby who approaches her at her balcony.
“Have we met?” the dark-haired woman asks the red-haired woman.
Shelby had become a widower in the past year. Some assassination attempt meant for him that took out his insufferable wife ---apparently, she wasn’t liked amongst her peers either according to Clemens. Some thought he ordered the hit to make space for his new lady.
Not Lizzie Stark, she’d moved up the ladder and moved on from Shelby. Married a swell guy who didn’t mind her past and was expecting her first child.
This woman was his right hand, the one who killed Finnick’s rapist and pruned what needed pruning.
The Red Demon, Clemens had named her when they saw her the first night on his arm.
She was pretty, with red curls and green eyes. Too pale to belong to any District, but there was something about her that told the victors she and Tommy had more in common with them than Plutarch and Fulvia.
“Not officially, Lucy Winters, Mr. Shelby's fiancée.” There is no handshaking, there is however an offered cigarette.
“Eva.” Eva had tried to give up the habit but now that Jack isn’t here to keep her grounded, she needs one badly.
“You and your loverboy are on the outs because of it, aren’t you?” to others it would sound like Winters means her killing Laurie and his mom hating her for it.
Those in their secret society, know its because he is not a rebel…yet.
Everyone goes through that phase, Cecelia, who won her games the year before Jack’s at 16, assures her. Cecelia had only joined when she felt her first born move inside her and knew she couldn’t let her children be raised for slaughter. She is pregnant with her second now, not old enough to be reaped but who’s to say where they’ll be in 10 years.
Cecelia claims she knows it in her bones that her children won’t ever be reaped. That
Eva wished she had that certainty.
“He fears repercussions, has a family to think of.” Eva doesn’t lie about his reasons. It was the reason everyone did as they were told.
Victors weren’t invincible.
Prostitution, the mentoring, the inability to do anything meaningful were all to show how powerless they are. Haymitch had only used the arena to win, and he’d lost everyone he loved. Cashmere and Gloss had families too, Enobaria, Jack, Finnick, everyone had someone they didn’t want the Capitol to touch.
And yet Cecelia had been braver than most by having children. Not many victors did, especially after the 25th games. Even the careers feared birthing a child for the slaughterhouse.
“He’ll come round to it; they always do.” The red-haired woman assures her as if knew it. “Might be by the end of the games or in six years, but they always do.”
In 5 years, Gina Nelson will turn 12, the birthday everyone dreads. Nothing like knowing death is coming for your child to make you hate the Capitol.
Eva should know, her mother killed herself on her 12th birthday.
Hey!!!
I’m interested in your thoughts: how many living Victors do you think each District has at the time of the QQ reaping?
omg hi!! thank you so much for the ask, i love talking about the victors!! iirc there were 59 victors still alive shortly before the quell, so here's what i think:
1: 11 total, 8 living: Jasper Montgomery (2nd, dec.); Ruby Red Bird (6th); Mirage Dubois (17th); Luxe Cloud (22nd); Jade Crawford (30th); Onyx O'Hara (42nd); Amber Nova Astor-Moon (51st); Quartz Whitegrass (59th); Cashmere Davenport (63rd); Gloss Davenport (64th); Crystal Chanel Michaels (66th)
2: 14 total, 11 living: Rex Barnes (1st, dec.); Atticus Nader (4th, dec.); Diana Roseman (8th, dec.); Florence Malina (19th); Ace Robinson (27th); Violet Rashid (28th); Valerie Banks (36th); Brutus Kumar (40th); Emmeline (Lyme) Lin (46th); Leo Kalinin (52nd); Sebastian Kim (56th); Enobaria Moore (62nd); Augustus Braun (67th); Julian Stone (72nd)
6: 3 total, 2 living: Basma Ford (23rd, dec.); Adrienne Mercedes Hughes (43rd); Miles Horowitz (60th)
7: 5 total, 3 living: Phyll Thomas (9th, dec.); Olive Sato (20th, dec.); Grover Hits Back (41st); Blight Hackman (58th); Johanna Mason (71st)
8: 4 total, 4 living: Woof Dimatteo (12th); April Webber (21st); Sasha Travin (35th); Cecelia Balan (57th)
12: 4 total, 3 living: Lucy Gray Baird (10th, dec.); Haymitch Abernathy (50th); Katniss Everdeen & Peeta Mellark (74th)
i think that the majority of the deceased victors passed away from old age, with the exception of a few (general TW because this gets dark):
Dacie Quinn (D5, 16th Games): died of cancer at the age of 53 (56 ADD)
Olive Sato (D7, 20th Games): died in childbirth at age 40 (42 ADD)
Basma Ford (D6, 23rd Games): died from a morphling overdose at age 27 (32 ADD)
Robin Blue Ryan (D9, 25th Games): murdered at age 37 (44 ADD) (imo he was a very unpopular victor in D9 because a) he was voted in, and b) as D9's first actual mentor, he didn't do very well, bringing home only one tribute in the 19 years he mentored)
Aubrey Flores (D10, 29th Games): drowned in his bathtub while drunk at age 40 (53 ADD)
Onyx O'Hara (D1, 42nd Games): died by suicide at age 26 (50 ADD)
anyways... thank you SO much for the ask, i'd love to hear what you think :3
The Fae Court - Military:
The Fae Court of the Wanderer, is many things... and thanks to its not-so-insignificant interest in remaining armed and protected, situated as it is mainly within a storied citadel at the heart of a magical mountain... surrounded by hundreds of acres of magically potent fae-monster-infested woodlands, and separated into its own fragmented shard of reality in the Void between Worlds to boot, it is no surprise that the Martial Branch is what it is - a loose collection of well-focused and extremely talented - or perhaps dangerous - individuals all fitted under a flexible-yet-effective hierarchy and honed to a singular goal - protecting the Court, and not only in its many members or unique territory.
Knight(s): Eerie Somby (Head) [ @dethdvncer ], Leanna von Braun (Reserve) [ @automaton-otto ] As much paragons of might as effective leaders, as much one-man-armies as exemplars of the values of the Court (in theory at least), the Knights are the top of the rankings for the Court's military, and the Tip of the Spear when open battle becomes inevitable to protect it from those who would harm it or its many members. Currently, there is only one Active knight, and thus their leadership is not truly in question, but the differentiation between 'Head' Knight and other Knights will perhaps one day be tested. As powerful and deadly as they are to face one-on-one, any and all Knights of the Court of the Wanderer are technically those most heavily or closely sworn to the Lord of the Court itself - as in many ways they are one of the foremost faces of the Court by virtue of their position(s).
Marshal(s): 'Hiegau' of the Black Dogs [ @lookthedevilintheeye ] A more mixed and indirect, if no less important rank just under the Knights, a Marshal of the Fae Court of the Wanderer is effectively meant to fill two roles interchangeably - logistics officer and organizer during peace, and field-commander during wartime. While strong in their own right as a prerequisite, being a Marshal is less about being able to fight so much as being able to Lead and keep one's wits in any sort of struggle - be it maintaining standards and assignments for the many Rangers and Guards in the court, or leading them to battle against deadly odds and winning without major losses. There is only one Marshal position filled at the moment, and the Lord of the Court is eager to see another rise to the position - be it from within the Court's current ranks or otherwise.
Ranger(s): Yuugo [ @heroesxdemons ], Ulan 'La Brújula' of Tangway [ @sins-of-the-sea ], Finn Mertens [ @finncomet ] Rangers are by far the most mixed and flexible of the members of the Martial Branch of the Court, regardless of their skills. By nature, the rank of Ranger is not one of leadership but nonetheless is a position of merit and importance, as Rangers are effectively Operatives ideal for assignments of great difficulty or importance to more actively guard the Court... not only its members, but its interests and investments, even if by occasionally unsavory means. Rangers are not Knights, but rather Spies, Assassins, Bounty-Hunters, and Specialists of many kinds and fields - far from defenseless in a straight-up fight, but generally those who favor tactics and methods other than full-frontal combat to fulfill their objectives. Current rangers include - in no particular order of seniority - an expert in hunting and subduing even the toughest of monsters, an expert assassin and tracker with exceptional skill in stealth and reconnaissance, and an in-training powerhouse of an adventurer learning new skills to better round-out his repertoire in more than simple combat.
Guard(s): Theodore 'Teddy' Augustus Ramsel [ @bleedinghearth ], Mortem [ @cursedfortune ], Nikki Eryl Faden [ @wiildhearrted ] Guards are technically the lowest rank in the military-hierarchy of the Fae Court, but in many ways they remain the backbone of more than just the defenses of the Court and the Halls it is seated within. While in times of war they are both soldiers and the last lines of defense should the Halls be attacked, in times of peace any Guard of the Court is expected to have other duties to help them serve and protect those they have sworn to defend: One such guard happily serves as a de-facto daycare worker in his day-to-day life in the Court, another inspects and maintains the many Runic protections and Wards in and around the Halls, yet another extends her patrol-duties to the wild, monster-infested forests surrounding the Mountain and serves as a Game Warden of sorts to control and maintain the natural defenses and resources the forests offer. While not expected to be front-line soldiers except as a last resort, there is no real requirement or expectation of strength or power to the role, other than simple diligence and an understanding of what might be asked of a Guard in times of need - it is therefore one of the easiest positions to enter and maintain in the Court.
A pounding on the front door shocked Emerald awake. She'd fallen asleep on the couch, her empty glass on the floor next to her, and the TV playing a highlight reel of the best-ever tribute parade outfits.
“Emerald, come on, please let me in.”
Augustus looked terrible. His shirt was literally torn, stained with dirt like he’d taken some kind of fall. There were actual twigs tangled in his hair, and his eyes were red and bloodshot.
“What the fuck happened to you?” Emerald’s head was pounding, her inebriation having already faded into a painful hangover.
“Does it matter?” he asked, his voice taking an argumentative edge that made Emerald’s eyebrows raise skeptically. “Fuck, Em, I’m sorry. I’m the one at your door in the middle of the night.” He sighed, running his hand through his hair and dislodging a few twigs. “I kind of got in a little fight.”
Emerald’s gaze flicked over his face. Now that he mentioned it, his face did have a bit of a red, swollen look about it, a black eye that hadn’t quite set in yet. “What, want me to go beat up the other guy?”
He wasn’t amused. “I need a place to crash.”
