Monthly Wrap Up - August 2023
#monthlywrapup #augustreading
Is August really over already? Wasn’t it just Easter? Seriously, where has this year gone? Well then, what did August bring my way? Well, unfortunately I got a stomach infection that I am just about recovered from. Sadly, though I was home for a few days, I couldn’t focus to read. I was too light headed and nauseous. I don’t recommend it. I did manage to read 2 books this month though. I…

What Book to Movie adaptations do you feel weren't worth the hype? Maybe it's a bit of an unpopular opinion but The Shining is one for me. Don't get me wrong, I like the film a lot, but no film has scared me quite like book The Shining did. I think it was the moving Topiary animals that got me the most. The same with the weeping angels in doctor who, things moving out of your eyesight to follow you just really creeps me out! I wish they had been in the film but I don't think it would have been as scary as I imagined it to be. I'm not sure but yeah I just feel a lot of the bits that really drove suspense and scared me in the book didn't happen in the film. I know they can't perfect every movie adaptation, of course, but still. I know it's a bit silly to get excited over my own photo but I'm actually really proud of this edit. It's so me, books not being in perfect condition (sorry, not sorry) and I love how the patch fitted over the hornet, and I just think back to my quality of photos seven, eight months ago and I have really improved. I have tried. So, on a feel good note, if there is a photo you are proud of I want you to know that it is good enough to share, and I love that your photo has made you happy. I'm not a photographer, but I've always enjoyed looking at pretty photos and flatlays and wish I could take them and I feel like I'm finally getting to the stage where I really enjoy taking, setting up and editing my bookstagram photos each month. #bookreadhappyhour #bookchatwithkat #theshining #ireadhorror #bookaesthetic #bookish #horrorreads #augustreading #notthebees #bookish #bookstagram #booksbooksbooks #booklover #bookaesthetic #bibliophile #amreading #ireadya #currentlyreading https://www.instagram.com/p/CEXUOyPI6Pz/?igshid=1j9mkloemt48r

On another episode of books I've read.
A 17y/o American-indian-muslim Maya Aziz is torn between two worlds. One to be an Indian Muslim as expected by her parents, the other is to be an American(with the freedom to date who she wants to,regardless of colour and religion).
With little regards for her culture and religion, she makes strides to focusing on her passion-filming. It's always she and her lens.
Being the Indian Muslim her parents expected of her was not as easy as it seems. She had to deal with her family being the only Muslims in town, the only brown girl in her class. To top it all,she had to deal with harassment(for being brown and muslim)after a terrorist attacked and a nearby victim who was falsely accused as the terrorist had the same name as her-Aziz.
With her parent's firm decision to study close to home, maya had to do something to live her American life, which included dating Phil-a non Muslim, non Indian white boy which her parent will totally never approve of.
Opposing her parents was one thing but choosing her passion over them was another. With her immense love for filming, maya chose her passion over her parents shredding their hearts to pieces.
Leaving the prying eyes of her parents, maya walks off to her free American life in New York.

Books I Read In August
Better late than never, here are the 14 books I read in August! This was a very romance-y month, as I was on holiday for most of it and I really enjoy reading light romances when I’m away. My top three would have to be 1)The Spanish Love Deception, 2) Ugly Love and 3) The Heart Principle!
Wild by Kristin Hannah - Out of all her books I've read so far, this is probably my least favourite. And it doesn't have anything to do with the impeccable writing style, I think it is just the overall theme and plot that didn't interest me as much. ⭐️⭐️⭐️
New Beginnings by Lily Lucas - I listened to this as an audiobook and while this was definitely fun, it didn't have any type of wow-factor for me personally. But the whole au-pair trope was definitely some fresh air in the romance department! ⭐️⭐️⭐️
101 Essays that will Change the Way you Think by Brianna West - I heard many very mixed opinions about this book and I am definitely with them on this one. While some essays really hit home and felt extremely well written, others seemed unfinished or out of place. Fun to flip through but I wouldn't buy a second edition (if there were one). ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The Spanish Love Deception by Elena Armas - OH. MY. GOD. This book - I don't have any words. So many tropes: he falls first, enemies to lovers, fake-dating, all my favourites!!! This was such a fun, cute read I just couldn't put down. If you liked The Hating Game or Shipped, you will definitely love this! If anyone asks why my standards are so high, I will just hand them this book. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
New Promises by Lily Lucas - This was a refreshing take on a ‘standard’ friends to lovers romance. It actually kept me guessing until the very last chapter! I enjoyed reading it. ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Defy by L.J. Shen - This was a novella taking place before the first book in the ‘Sinners of Saint’ series and I really enjoyed it but I think it definitely deserved a full book of its own. ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Ruckus by L.J. Shen - This is the second book in the ‘Sinners of Saint’ series which I enjoyed in the beginning but felt more and more annoyed with towards the end. Especially the main character Rosie was getting on my nerves with her attitude and jealousy towards her sister.
New Dreams by Lily Lucas. This was the “weakest” book of the green valley series so far for me. I just couldn’t connect with the characters really well.  ⭐️⭐️
Beach Read by Emily Henry - Hyped up extremely on BookTok atm, so I had high expectations. It’s a great book and I loved the story, but it was not anything that really blew me away. I would like, however, to give Gus and January a big hug. ⭐️⭐️ ⭐️⭐️
Ugly Love by Colleen Hoover - Again, extremely hyped up at the moment but WOW, I loved it. Colleen Hoover just does it over and over again with her books. Amazing, heartbreaking and so beautiful. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ ⭐️
The Alice Equation by Davina Stone - While I wasn’t wooed by the plot itself, I loved that the book takes place in Australia, which I always like. Curious to read the sequel about Polly as I found her to be a very interesting character! ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Lizzie & Dante by Mary Bly - I heard so, so many great things about this book but sadly was a little disappointed by it. While I loved the setting in Italy, the characters and story just didn’t do it for me. ⭐️⭐️
The Wedding Date by Jasmine Guillory - I loved this! The jobs described in this book were really interesting to read about and I loved Alexa’s character. Drew, however, was way too jealous imo. ⭐️⭐️⭐️
The Heart Principle by Helen Hoang - I was waiting for Quan to have his own story ever since he first appeared in The Kiss Quotient. And wow, this book did not disappoint! This book was so vulnerable, sweet and emotional, I loved it! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ ⭐️
What was your favourite of the month?

Matrix, the land of forms
“Let go of fear, doubt and disbelief. Free your mind.” -Morpheus, The Matrix (1999)
Tumblr media
“All that is required to become free of the ego is to be aware of it, since awareness and ego are incompatible.
Awareness is the power that is concealed within the present moment…
Only presence can free you from the ego, and you can only be present NOW,
Not yesterday, or tomorrow.
Only presence can undo the past in you and thus transform your state of consciousness.”
PRESENCE: Awareness of the you beyond the ego, the you that is made up of infinity, time, Being itself.
“Spiritual realization is to see clearly that what I perceive, experience, think, or feel is ultimately not who I am, that I cannot find myself in all these things that continuously pass away.” To “deny thyself” is to negate and thus undo the illusion of self.
A New Earth, Eckhart Tolle

On to The Paper Menagerie by Ken Liu. I wondered which of his projects to read first, so it is this powerful short story collection. #augustreads #scififantasy #bookstagram https://www.instagram.com/p/CSNRJ0qBpVO/?utm_medium=tumblr

Aug 10th, 2020 📚reading updates📚 . 🌸LAST - Stamped from the Beginning. I still have a chapter + the epilogue left to read but it's safe to say this is a 5 star read. It is more on the academic side of non-fiction and it deals with a lot of information about racial prejudice spanning through centuries. Kendi's work is outstanding and open my eyes to a loads of issues I had no idea about - especially about assimilationists and how their way of thinking has done more damage than good. This should be mandatory reading for everybody. It took me 2 months to get through it because I wanted to soak everything in. Most pages are highlighted and annotated. This is a must read. . 🌿NOW - Hamnet & Mexican Gothic. I am halfway through both of them and enjoyed both. I'm typing this as I read another chapter of Hamnet that brought me to tears. O'Farrell's writing is a dream. And with regards with Mexican Gothic, I can say I am intrigued and disgusted at some scenes at the same time. Really atmospheric novel. Cannot wait to see how the story unfolds. . 🌼NEXT - Rage of Dragons. I forgot to get the book for the picture but it is the novel I am planning on picking up first because I joined Busy Bee Bookclub and that's the pick for August. I've heard nothing but amazing things and despite not reading much military fantasy I cannot wait to read it. . What are you currently reading? • • • #lastnownextreads #hamnet #maggieofarrell #mexicangothic #silviamorenogarcia #stampedfromthebeginning #ibramxkendi #literaryfiction #womensprize #horrorfiction #nonfiction #antiracistbooks #augustreads #unitedbookstagram #bookaesthetics https://www.instagram.com/p/CDt0nO4qJoG/?igshid=cy3q6hg195sk

August and summer have come to a close! Within the next couple of days my block leave will end and I’ll be back to work. It’s been brilliant having so much downtime to relax, spend time with friends & family, and I was able to get four more books down range to kick off the fall! This post also gives the chance to show off this BEAUTIFUL bookshelf my Father was kind enough to make me because I ran out of room a while ago on my main bookshelf. Thanks, Pops!😊 August’s reading haul included books #13 and #14 of the Sharpe Series where Capt Richard Sharpe must regain his Light Company he lost to army politics by leading a Forlorn Hope at the Siege of Badajoz, and game of espionage against the brutal French Colonel Philippe Leroux. Also read a synopsis of the course content on the Marine Corp Combat Hunter’s course, which teaches about the art of combat profiling in Left of Bang, and the recounting of the Falkland War from Brigadier Julian Thompson who commanded 3 Commando Brigade (Royal Marines and Parachute Regiment) throughout the conflict. Looking forward to kicking off Autumn with more reading! #bookstagram #augustreads #covidreads #sharpescompany #sharpessword #bernardcornwell #leftofbang #patrickvanhorne #jasonariley #combathunter #USMC #nopicnic #julianthompson #3commandobrigade #falklandswar #royalmarines #parachuteregiment #newbookshelf #thanksdad (at Kentville, Nova Scotia) https://www.instagram.com/p/CExJD_XHorULg3R0xc9iwx_BQeqsmOHLFjHnIc0/?igshid=1z2vsfzmltbx
