Nervous about if he was upset with her or not, she’d very nearly not signed the papers for the truck when he had said he wasn’t her boyfriend, but after everything he’d done for her, it was the least she could do. Besides, it had been surprisingly cheap, she’d thought brand new trucks were worth more than that. Then again, Harry had always told her that her value of a dollar was entirely skewed. Making sure the red gift bow stayed on the hood without blowing off, Autumn adjusted her pretty sundress with its chunky leather belt, an outfit decidedly country, at least for her, considering she’d paired it with a pair of six-inch platform Louboutins, and waited to catch sight of him, throwing her arms out at her sides. “Surprise!”

The moment she’d walked into her brothers house, Ember had locked herself in the bathroom. Shut the door, curled up in the tub, and stayed there with her knees hugged tight to her chest. Visions of flames still laid over the entire world, a dull ache settling into her scars as she relived that night and this one over and over again in tandem until the two were blurred together into one stark memory of horror and physical and emotional pain.

Everything she had, everything she’d worked for was gone and it left the small female feeling empty, numbing it all out with retreating into the memories like she had so many times before when she was stuck on her stomach as her back healed oh so painfully.

Even when the door opened and she was no longer alone her eyes refused to wander, locked firmly on the wall across from her but hardly seeing it. Streaks of glistening tracks from single tears spilling over occasionally still shimmering on striking pale skin.

After what felt like she’d been looking forever, Autumn finally spotted the curly haired brunette from across the crowd, lifting a hand to give him a little wave before starting over to him. “So this is what you’re doing instead of fixing my car, huh?” With a smirk she let her fingers trail featherlight down his arm. “Enjoying yourself, Mister Southern Charm?
