3 Tips for Fanfic / AO3 Readers!
I love, love, love reading fanfic (McLennon, helllooooo).
Here are 3 ways to make your fanfic reading easier / more enjoyable since it's off the traditional publishing path:
If you love listening to Audiobooks, download NaturalReaders, upload a PDF of a fic & listen like it's on Audible. If you think you'll listen a lot, I highly recommend getting the Plus Subscription ($19/month). This is not an ad, btw, I don't get a kickback for this. But the Plus Subscription AI voices are so insanely realistic & expressive that you'll feel like you're listening to a human narrator. My personal favorite is Andrew (U.S.). If you don't want to pay, their free voices are fine - it just doesn't pass for human. (Bonus: I use this subscription for work & write it off on my taxes. Then I use it to read long/boring work docs. But duh, fanfic is the real reason I pay for it!) NaturalReaders is my favorite way to consume long fics while I'm cleaning/cooking/driving, including and especially my current fav, On Our Way Back Home. One tip, though: If you wanna listen to a particularly long fic, like hundreds of pages long, it's easier if you split it up into a couple of files before you upload it. It will load much faster and it's easier to manage since it won't have chapter markings like on Audible.
Download AO3 files on Kindle. You probably already know this - but I didn't realize, until recently, how incredibly easy this is!! Here's how: - Download the Kindle App on your phone / iPad. - Open AO3 and download any fics to read as an EPUB file. - If you've downloaded these files on your computer, airdrop to your iPhone or iPad. If you've downloaded on your phone you won't have to do this step. - Go to your downloads or whatever folder it’s saved to. - Click the file with a long hold then select to "Share to Kindle." - Make any changes you want to the title / author's name and then click upload! It'll be available on your phone/ipad in a few minutes. Just like a regular Kindle book you can highlight, annotate, change font size / color, etc. 3. Keep your fics organized on Kindle with "Collections." "Collections" are essentially themed folders on your Kindle. I use them to sort fics into categories: unread, currently reading, and favorite fics that I'm excited to re-read! I also sort based on fandom / length. So "Short McLennon Unread" or "Favorite McLennon to Reread." You could use the folders however you want, of course. One advantage of this is that you can batch upload dozens or hundreds of fics on your phone / iPad and then find which one you want more easily. I love, love, love doing this before an international trip so my Kindle is always fully loaded with hours of McLennon entertainment. Sorry, not sorry to anyone reading over my shoulder on a flight. Do you have any fanfic reading tips for me? I'd love to hear them :)

Adding on - for screens, if you have an iphone, there's not much you can do beyond the generic night mode screen dimmer but for android i have an app called Twilight and it lets you customize the color and brightness so like if you need to be on your phone in bed or smth it can be like ridiculously dark. On computer f.lux is not quite as extremely dimmable option, but pretty good for changing the color to be more red. You wanna reduce reduce blue light because it stops u from producing melatonin bc your body thinks it's still daytime out. Eliminating visual stimuli also good like if u need something to keep your brain busy you could go for audiobooks (libby - free library app that has a bunch) or podcasts.
And if you're on a fucked up sleep schedule like me on night shift :( then most people need blackout curtains and i have mine pinned to the walls w/ thumbtacks. I have an extra curtain at the top pinned across the wall w/ thumbtacks because there's too much light getting in with a normal curtain rod, and they're held together with binder clips.
If you do need melatonin and are in the US, try and find a product or at least a brand which has been verified by a third party, since melatonin is not regulated by the FDA so they can kinda just lie about the amount contained as long as it has the right ingredients.
hello frank! my anxiety kept me awake all last night and now im very tired... do you have any tips for getting a good night's sleep?
Not specifically about anxiety, although that might help. I do like melatonin, even though I've found I need very large doses, and try a variety of calming strategies -- e.g. I'll go on a walk, or I'll watch a show, or I'll listen to music that sounds nice to me.

Apps for the Academic
Just because I love antique and vintage student aesthetics doesn’t mean I don’t make good use of modern technology. Here are some of my favorite apps to use during study. All of these are free or inexpensive, and none of them require a subscription. Please note that I use an iphone, and I do not know how many of these are available for Android.
Mighty Timer - A customizable tea timer. Never forget your steeping tea again.
Notebook by Zoho - Endless digital notebooks, on your phone or computer, with features ranging from text to sketching to photography to voice memos.
myNoise - Everyone needs some ambiance. No ads, customizable sounds, and it’s pretty cheap to pay for mixes you don’t get for free. I personally enjoy “Calm office” for study and “Rain noise” for sleep.
Chirp Audiobooks - I’m not a fan of Amazon, or of Audible. But I am a fan of audiobooks. Chirp is not a subscription service, instead it just offers audiobooks at various discounts, some as low as $0.99. To my delight, a lot of the lowest discounts get applied to classics and philosophy books.
Countdown - I struggle with digital planners, but it does help to know exactly how many days I have until an upcoming event. This is a calendar app that shows a countdown to each event you input. You can even set reoccurring events, if you need help remembering things like birthdays.
Labyrinthos - This one’s for the witchy academics. A lovely, free tool for learning the various meanings of tarot cards, and getting digital readings.
Bitwarden - A password vault and generator, open-source and completely free. It’ll generate strong passwords for you and keep them safe. The only one you’ll have to remember is the password to unlock Bitwarden itself.
Feel free to add any other apps you find useful in the reblogs, I’m always looking for new ones to try.

The Future is in Interoperability Not Big Tech: 2021 in Review
2021 was not a good year for Big Tech: a flaming cocktail of moderation failings, privacy breaches, leaked nefarious plans, illegal collusion and tone-deaf, arrogant pronouncements stoked public anger and fired up the political will to do something about the unaccountable power and reckless self-interest of the tech giants.
We’ve been here before. EFF’s been fighting tech abuses for 30 years, and we’re used to real tech problems giving rise to nonsensical legal “solutions,” that don’t address the problem — or make it worse. There’s been some of that (okay, there’s been a lot of that).
But this year, something new happened: lawmakers, technologists, public interest groups, and regulators around the world converged on an idea we’re very fond of around here: interoperability.
There’s a burgeoning, global understanding that the internet doesn’t have to be five giant websites, each filled with text from the other four. Sure, tech platforms have “network effects” on their side — meaning that the more they grow, the more useful they are. Every iPhone app is a reason to buy an iPhone; every person who buys an iPhone is a reason to create a new iPhone app. Likewise, every Facebook user is a reason to join Facebook (in order to socialize with them) and every time someone joins Facebook, they become a reason for more people to join.
But tech’s had network effects on its side since the earliest days, and yet the web was once a gloriously weird and dynamic place, where today’s giant would become tomorrow’s punchline — when was the last time you asked Jeeves anything, and did you post the results to your Friendster page?
Network effects aren’t anything new in tech. What is new are the legal strictures that prevent interoperability: new ways of applying cybersecurity law, copyright, patents, and other laws and regulations that make it illegal (or legally terrifying) to make new products that plug into existing ones.
That’s why you can’t leave Facebook and still talk to your Facebook friends. It’s why you can’t switch mobile platforms and take your apps with you. It’s why you can’t switch audiobook providers without losing your audiobooks, and why your local merchants don’t just give you a browser plugin that replaces Amazon’s “buy” buttons with information about which store near you has the item you’re looking for on its shelves.
These switching costs are wholly artificial. By their very nature, computers and networks are flexible enough to allow new services to piggyback on existing ones. That’s the secret history of all the tech we love today.
Interoperability — whether through legally mandated standards or guerilla reverse-engineering — is how we can deliver technological self-determination to internet users today. It’s how we can give users the power to leave the walled gardens where they are tormented by the indifference, incompetence, and malice of tech platforms, and relocate to smaller, more responsive alternatives that are operated by co-ops, nonprofits, startups, or hobbyists.
Which is why this year’s progress on interoperability has been so heartening. It represents a break from the dismal policy syllogism of “Something must be done. There, I did something.” It represents a chance to free the hostages of Big Tech’s walled garden.
Here’s the interop news that excited us this year:
The US Congress took up the ACCESS Act, a law that would require the largest platforms to open up APIs to their rivals;;
The EU launched the Digital Markets Act (DMA), a sweeping pro-competition proposal. The initial draft had a lot of stuff we loved on interop, which was removed from subsequent drafts, and then, in a victory for common sense and good policy, the European Parliament put all the interop stuff back in, and more besides!
That’s not all, of course! There’s also pro-interop action that’s more of a mixed bag: for example, China’s new “cyberspace regulations” (which ban Chinese tech giants from blocking interoperability) and the policy recommendations from the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority report on ad-tech, which leans heavily on interop to encourage competition (but is intended, in part, to improve the market for commercial surveillance of internet users).
Beyond state action, there are independent interop efforts from big companies and individual tinkerers alike. On the corporate side, Twitter continues to make progress on its “Project Blue Sky,” billed as “an app store for social media algorithms.” On the tinkerer side, we’re delighted to see the guardians of the Public Interest Internet continue to fight for the user by creating DIY glue that sticks together all kinds of messenger apps, like Pidgin and Matterbridge.
Interoperability is a technical solution to a technical problem, but it’s not just a nerdy answer to a social conundrum. By changing the law to make it easier for users to walk away from Big Tech silos, we change what kind of technology can be built, what kinds of businesses can be operated, and what kind of lives digital users can make.
2021 was a landmark year for interoperability — and 2022 is shaping up to be even better.

i generally never back up my phone, except for once in october i Did, trying time do some sort of audiobook crime using a 3rd party app called imazing instead of itunes
and then like 2 weeks later my iphone deleted ALL my messages with absolutely no warning and i was like. KINDA upset, because i reference old conversations all the time, and i'd had this phone since 2017, until i realized i had most of it on the backup
but my computer is a nightmare and it's almost full so i was using windirstat to see what to delete and it turns out those backups are taking up like a shit ton of my computers space
the only part of the backups i care about at all are those messages from that specific october backup and then i could just delete the app
but the imazing version i have is a free trial a will NOT let me export this in any readable fashion and like. has functions to just export messages but it will only let me have. 25 messages unless i buy the whole thing and i really do not want to buy the whole thing just so i can do this one thing and delete the app. augh!!!!
#this post is impressively both convoluted and wildly uninteresting#but someone must bear witness to my suffering and this would have been like 10 tweets#thank u#tbd

Resources for Keeping Current on Emerging Technology
This post is about keeping up-to-date on technology that is coming out or improving. This can be software, apps, hardware (computers, phones, TVs, etc.) and anything else that fits these categories, even appliances. Listed below are five resourceful websites where anyone can find the most recent - or future - technology.
Techmeme
https://techmeme.com/
This website shows a list of articles from different websites. These websites include information about new or changing technology and programs (Techmeme, 2019). For example, one article is from Bloomberg.com and discusses how Apple bought a United Kingdom startup that will enhance the iPhone’s picture-taking ability. The program, called Spectral Edge, uses artificial intelligence to make pictures crisper with improved colors. It takes an infrared picture and blends it with the photo to make it better (Gurman, 2019).
CNET
https://www.cnet.com/
CNET, or CBS Interactive, offers lists of product reviews, best products in many categories, videos, and gift guides, among other things. CNET has been around for quite a while with reviews of technological products like computers, smartphones, tablets, e-readers, and speakers. This is one of the listed Editors’ Choice products. The 2018 Amazon Kindle Paperwhite is an e-book reader. It has 4.5 stars out of 5 stars on CNET. It is ten percent slimmer than its predecessor, is completely waterproof, and has double the storage space at 8 GB. It now has crisper text and Bluetooth audio capability for audiobooks. The only two cons listed are that is a bit more expensive than its forerunner and the ad-free experience costs $20 more (Carnoy, 2019).
Wired Gear
https://www.wired.com/category/gear/
Wired is an online magazine that gives news about tech gear, news, science, and culture. The Gear part of the website lists products that are new to the scene or improved in some way (Wired, 2019). One of the articles listed is about how Google’s Assistant can translate speech through your smartphone. Google has made it possible to translate your or someone else’s speech language without downloading an app. For the Apple iPhone, the Google Assistant will need to be downloaded, but most Android phones already have this installed. All a user must do is say, “Hey, Google, be my (insert language here) translator.” Then they point the phone’s speaker at the person speaking and their speech will be translated. There is a bit of trouble with deep accents, but this is improving every day. It is necessary for the user to be on the internet, though (Chokkattu, 2019).
Engadget Gear
https://www.engadget.com/gear/
Engadget has sections for reviews, gear, gaming, entertainment, tomorrow, audio, video, deals, and a buyer’s guide. In the gear category (https://www.engadget.com/gear/) there are articles about computers, automated lights, and other things like that. One article I found interesting was about a laptop computer. The Pixelbook Go from Google is now available through Amazon or the Google Store. This configuration includes a 4K display, 16GB of RAM, and 256GB of storage, but is $1399. There are lower-priced configurations starting at $649 (Moon, 2019).
Engadget Gaming
https://www.engadget.com/gaming/
The gaming section of engadget shows different articles about new and updated games. The first article on the page discusses how Amazon’s first MMO will be released around May 2020. The game is called New World and is set in a 17th-century supernatural world. It will include zombies and bears, and weapons of spears and bows and arrows. This game has been in development for over three years and contains a classless progression system, the ability to play alone or in groups, and battles of up to 100 players and non-player characters (Conditt, 2019).
