submitting nominations for the audio drama yearbook and i am once again asking shows to include character names, writers, and sound designers in their show notes
even if it's just a one person team doing production - pleeeeease? you deserve to credit yourself too
and character names, honestly, it makes it so much easier talk about shows on social if you know how characters' names are spelled

Hey Tal!! Excellent shows you’ve got there! Can I ask how you got started working in audio drama? Have you done other creative projects besides audio drama?
Thanks for taking asks! I find it really helpful as I’ve been wanting to figure out how to do audio projects
Hope you have a lovely time zone, whatever it’s currently at
Hii! You certainly CAN ask~
Maaaany years ago I had a long commute to my summer internship so I started listening to fiction podcasts. And then I sorta realized that I could make them too? A big inspiration for me was The Bright Sessions! Lauren talked a fair bit about her production process and it was a lightbulb moment for me. I started hanging out on the fringes of the audio drama creator community and then just got more and more involved. And now I'm here. It was all sorta an accident... I always wrote little stories growing up (my 8th grade yearbook says I wanted to be an author when I grew up lol), and audio drama just turned out to be the way to get those little stories out there. It helps that I really fell in love with the process. Now things like voice acting and sound design are my favorite, over writing itself. I haven't done other creative projects on the same scale as AD production. I do some sketching/painting/linocut mostly for myself. I've done a tiny bit of sound design for indie film projects. I'm currently trying to convince my brother's band to let me run their social media... does that count?
I think if I didn't fall into audio drama I'd definitely have found some other big thing to do. But I'm just so happy with how things are right now :)

I finished a relisten to The Shadow of the Bear audio drama and I have a number of random thoughts. Under the cut for length and spoilers (a couple touching on later books).
Small-ish things I love, in no particular order:
The implication that Fish has kept up going to the Opera regularly and has complained multiple times about the “new tenor” to Bear.
“Don’t worry about the treasures, Father - we’ll guard them with our lives.” So lighthearted at the moment, but they take it seriously.
Blanche and Bear laughing at Rose’s styrofoam-ball dream and again on the way to the prom.
Officer Cirotti’s comment that he needs an early retirement when he has to deal with Rose after the prom; I bet the feeling escalated after having to rescue her and Fish.
Rose’s musing tone when she realises the yearbook photo of Benedict Denniston looks familiar.
The Fosters and how protective they are (essentially Mama Bear Foster and “he’s my best friend” Steven).
Rose’s “You don’t look that old to me” comment when Mr. Freet is complaining about how old people like him don’t balance very well and Blanche’s hissed “ROSE!”
Bear’s perspective while Fish is missing, and his reaction when he realises that Fish’s theory about the person behind everything is correct.
Fish’s attempt at a joke with “What’s a nice girl like you doing in a place like this?” when Rose shows up in Mr. Freet’s basement.
“Sorry, sorry, I know that hurt,” right when Fish saves Rose’s life. And how calm he is with helping her breathe.
In the last scene, Rose guessing Fish is 45 and him telling her she’s correct, and how indignant she is.
The hesitancy with which Fish asks, “Is she always like this?” at the end.
Other things I appreciated or noticed (AKA the long comments):
How Fish’s loneliness and uncertainty is portrayed. Benedict “not known for his tact” Denniston actually tries to be tactful/kind a lot in this audio drama: he tells Bear he doesn’t want to go to the Opera and sends him off to ask the Briers because he can tell he really wants to go; he’s really uncertain but cautiously asks Rose if she’s a professional musician because she’s so good; despite saying he doesn’t want to get involved, he tries to actually talk to her about the issue with Blanche and tells her to give Blanche some space and time; he refrains from saying he thinks Bear’s plan of trying to flush out Freet by showing the chalice at the flea market is wrong - even when he’s goaded into making a not very politic statement (”My breath is precious, I won’t waste it”), he follows it up with telling Bear, “God go with you” - it’s only when Bear grouchily says “Okay” back that he replies with a touchy “Okay”; “There’s nothing to apologize for,” etc.
When Father Raymond gives the three pieces to the Ben and Arthur, he tells them that they’re well off and “you and your father could find a way to keep them safe“. But Mr. Denniston disinherits and kicks the boys out of their home, including freezing all their assets. SO...how do the boys get the pieces back? Were they just keeping them in their rooms and then they took them with when they were kicked out of their house? Were they keeping them in their mother’s apartment? Surely they couldn’t have gotten them out of a safety deposit box. And where did they keep them after they got kicked out? I keep picturing them keeping them in lockers in bus stations because that’s obviously What One Does.
Ben is only 20 at the start of Black as Night, and his birthday is in April. He turned 19 during The Shadow of the Bear then, meaning that, depending on the timing of the prom, he either had his birthday while Bear was a bit distracted with the Briers or when they’re hiding after leaving the Fosters; I’m not sure which is a sadder idea.
“If [Steve] doesn’t kill us for putting his mom in danger, I doubt he’ll kill me for [the tuxedo]” vs. “He trashed my tuxedo, the rat.” (With no blame on either of them for putting Mrs. Foster in danger.) I have read and listened to this so many times and I don’t remember ever picking up on this before (HOW?)! At any rate, Fish was right - and I hope Bear bought Steve a new tuxedo once everything was sorted.
I like that Bear calls his dad when he realises Ben is missing, but the “it’s not about the bail money, though I appreciate it” comment is odd. Considering that Bear hasn’t been back to their apartment in over a day, I’m wondering if Bear was held for a day on suspicion of drugs regardless, and he had to get bailed out by his dad...? Which makes no sense at all, though neither does the idea he’s referring to the bail money from the first arrest.
Instead of Blanche telling Rob he’s an evil prince like in the book, she instead refuses to give information because she recognises that the man asking for information is “the evil troll”.
I can’t quite catch the background conversation between Eileen and Lisa at the warehouse before Blanche makes a run for it, but I think they’re talking about their earrings? Lisa says something about thinking they’re a gift from her mom or something but they’re too long.
When Bear is sending Blanche home with the chalice: he tells her it’s nothing and it’s all going to be over soon and okay - but he knows at this point that the “Black Dwarf”, the one who murdered Father Raymond, has Ben and is going to be meeting him in an abandoned place, and he knows one or both of them probably aren’t going to be walking away. And then Blanche tells Bear she’s afraid, and he tells her she’ll be okay and that All will be Well. But he never tells her he will be well because he can’t.
Fish is the one with all these plans and backup plans and always making sure he knows the impact of what he’s doing legally and what the risks are and making so sure no one else is dragged into the nightmare. And then having Rose walk in and all of a sudden he’s responsible for her and trying to protect her - it’s horrifying and he’s completely lost any tiny bit of control and hope he had.
“I’m not afraid.” “I know. I am.” Because Rose knows she’s facing death but Ben has already been through some of what Freet can do and now someone else will get hurt and he can’t stop it. I think it reflects at least some of the conversation Ben and Rose have in Waking Rose, where it’s so much worse to go through something a second time because you already know what you can go through and what you can endure, and you’ve got concrete knowledge to feed your fear. (Also, it’s a nice call back to their meeting in the park - “What makes you think I’m afraid of anything?” “Oh, I know you're not afraid of anything. At least you think you’re not. That’s why I’m sending you home.”)
“Devout Catholics are so amusing - you’d be astounded at how much fun I have with them.” Given what Freet has put Benedict through in the past few years, much less the past few days, I doubt he’d even be slightly surprised.
Lastly, for a couple of minutes, the listener is left to linger in suspense about whether Mr. Freet had killed Bear with his last shot...

Historic Pittsburgh Fair 2017!
The 2017 Historic Pittsburgh Fair happened on Saturday- and we hope you were there! But in case you weren’t able to make it, here’s a look of some of the ways your A&SC archivists and librarians- and one of our ULS colleagues from our Office of Scholarly Communication and Publishing- were involved.
Tumblr media
Ashley and Zach staffed the “Treasures from Our Partners” table for the duration of the event. They brought our materials intended to represent a taste of our very wide collecting areas, including a Pitt Owl yearbook, playbills from the Curtis Theater Collection, local fanzines, US Steel advertising comics from the 1950s, and photos of Hillman Library and the Cathedral of Learning under construction. They had a lot of visitors, so if you happen to be one of the people they talked to- thanks for stopping by!
Tumblr media
Lauren Collister and Wikipedia Visiting Scholar Barb Page held down the Open Access Week table, showing how open access to collections like Historic Pittsburgh allows for more projects to be built off of it. To illustrate, Lauren and Barb live-edited Wikipedia using HP materials. Lauren primarily worked on the page for Buhl Planetarium (it went from a sad 2 sentences to a full article, including contributions from table visitors about the Miniature Railroad Village). Barb digitized a 1917 photo of an ambulance (with permission) from the neighboring table of the Twentieth Century Club and we played a game to get the ambulance photo in as many articles as possible with the help and suggestions of table visitors.
Tumblr media
Ashley and David also gave two of the lightning talk presentations for the event. David gave an overview of how to work the new Historic Pittsburgh site, focusing on the importance of narrowing down your search via the facets on the left hand of the page. Ashley presented a primer on how to preserve your personal digital materials, including all the ways they’re similar to- and different from- traditional paper and photographic records.
Megan Massanelli worked with the local Three Rivers Archivists to provide on-site preservation and archiving consultations for fair attendees at the “Preservation and Archiving Advice from the Experts!” table.  Throughout the day, local archivists met with community members to review their personal and family photographs, audio recordings, journals, letters, scrapbooks, and newspapers. Participants shared stories of family drama, personal achievement, and local history and archivists shared their experience storing, describing, arranging, and digitizing historical materials. A win-win!
Miriam Meislik helped run the Pittsburgh Home Movie Day event, which was a huge success! Seven local film professionals gathered to help screen, assess, and answer film preservation questions on Saturday, November 4.  Eleven 16mm, seven Super8 and twelve 8mm reels were screened for approximately 40 viewers where we relived holiday parties, birthday parties, vacations, and the spectacular performance of the magnificent Mysto. Between reels viewers were treated to a show of found 35mm family photograph slides.

The whole event was a great success, and an awful lot of fun. We all learned new things, and got the chance to meet some of our most ardent users. We certainly have to give many thanks to the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh-Oakland for hosting. Keep your eyes open for future news; with any luck, we hope to see this become an annual event!

#35: Season 1, Episode 4 - “What’ll Idol Do?”
Ren gets a pre-high school mentor (is that really necessary? lol) named June Marie. She’s clearly evil and fake as a 3 dollar bill, but Ren thinks she’s the cat’s pajamas because of her scholastic accomplishments. Meanwhile, Louis is obsessing over someone stealing one of his beloved VHS tapes of an SNL episode. And you know how much I love Louis The Aspiring Comedian... :)
Tumblr media
The episode opens with Louis reading a book called "The Art of the Joke." Wait a minute... Louis Stevens... READING?! Yep. When I was younger, Season 3 Louis was always my fave. But, looking back.. Season 1 Louis was amazing. He had so much ambition and a real goal to become a comic, much like Shia. So much so, he was actually reading and researching about it!! That pretty much tapers off eventually and he just becomes a little zany -- Also like Shia...? lol. It's not a bad thing by any means. I'm just realizing exactly how much I miss this more restrained, "real," smart and subtly sarcastic Louis. He retains these qualities throughout the series, they’re just highlighted more/better in the early episodes.
Tumblr media
He’s literally skipping dinner to read here. Incredible. He’s also seen reading this book in “All About Yvette.” I think it must’ve been Season 1 Louis’ bible.
Anyway, Louis takes a break from reading and goes to watch a VHS tape of a 1995 Saturday Night Live episode ft. Mike Myers... when he discovers it’s missing! We see the rest of the family at dinner downstairs, being forced to listen to Ren talking up some chick June Marie like she’s the second coming of Jesus. She explains that June is her ~idol~ and will be acting as her “Pre-High School mentor.” Right away you get the sense that this is sketchy. Even though Ren Stevens is, well... Ren Stevens... We see her relying SO MUCH on June to help elevate her status once she gets to High School. Obviously Ren could easily achieve high ranking status herself -- And would most likely take pride in that. It feels a little bit out of character. Even Eileen seems very suspicious about it. We also find out that June is in Geometry class with Donnie. This is important information!
Tumblr media
Louis barges into dinner, turning the missing tape situation into a major mystery case. He’s basically accusing someone in the family of stealing it. Aside from this scene going on just a tad too long, I still think it’s entertaining. Louis says a great line: “I’m not a detective. But I did watch 10 whole minutes of Nash Bridges once” which I freaking love. The entire family claims to have no idea what he’s talking about and they’re so fed up with him and his Dramatics™ -- it’s kinda hilarious. With every overly serious thing he says, they’re all just groaning like “oh my god.....” It gets me. The scene ends with Ren saying “Mother, may I please have permission to FedEx Louis to Timbuktu before June Marie gets here?!” And Eileen says “Absolutely not! ........UPS is so much cheaper.” I’m only mentioning this because I caught a rerun of the episode on Freeform recently, and this bit was mysteriously missing! I’m assuming it was cut out for “FedEx” and “UPS” copyright reasons? No idea. Idk man. I always kinda liked that part, and I was like ???????? Where’d it go?!
Ren practices in the mirror how she’s gonna greet June before she gets there and it’s too much. We finally see this June Marie character and her personality is so ugly. She seems like a rich, entitled snob. (Trust me on this, I have very good judgement.) Ren is in awe though and desperate for June to like her. Again, this seems a little out of character. But she wants to achieve flawless academic success in high school and believes June can help her do that. Ren is a perfectionist, sooooo.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
June is seriously the fakest person I’ve ever seen and Ren is looking at her like she is her savior. I’m sad.
Oh yeah.. Did I mention that June Marie is also a creep? It almost seems like she's coming onto Ren at one point. I'm actually uncomfortable watching this. She’s so clearly up to something.
Tumblr media
She’s saying “Could you imagine what we could accomplish on the high school yearbook staff together?” in a suggestive voice. Tell me this isn’t creepy as hell. Run, Ren... Run for the hills.
At school the next day, Louis is complaining to Tawny about the missing tape now. She, too, is so done with his drama lol. I love this bit because he actually references the sketch “The Whiners” as a major influence of his and that the missing tape is what made him want to be funny. Awwwwww! Dear, god. I seriously love this so much. Even though according to Wiki, “The Whiners” was a skit from 1982-84. So, this tape definitely doesn’t exist irl. But, still! Tom overhears the crisis and offers to set up an audio/video home surveillance system in Louis’ house in an attempt to catch the possible tape thief. Tom is the best. He always has great lines and actor Fred Meyers’ delivery always makes me smile. Later that day, he ultimately sets up the system for Louis! He offers to set up one for Tawny as well and Louis says “Tawny doesn’t have a home. She lives on her bike. It’s a long story. It’s very tragic.” I always loved this.
Tumblr media
lol at Tom listening in. Also, I love how Louis and Tawny are such a couple’a outcasts honestly. They’re so perfect!
Ren tells her placeholder best friend Jewel about June.. and I swear it’s like everyone somehow knows that June is trash, but they don’t want to burst Ren’s bubble. Jewel is clearly thinking “.....yikes! not gonna say anything”:
Tumblr media
The “yikes” face is even punctuated by a suspicious dominant chord... just so there’s no confusion. What is UP with that hair, btw??? The Early 2000s were a mystical time in history...
While spying on the family from his room, (see cover image) Louis ends up overhearing the real juicy drama. Forget the tape! June Marie is over and meticulously quizzing Ren about high school stuff (”Details, woman! This ain’t junior high!!!” lol chill) when suddenly Donnie walks in and tells Ren she has a phone call -- which ends up leaving June and Donnie alone. Remember how I said they have geometry class together? Yeah. They have a small talk conversation about class - and as soon as Donnie leaves the room, June whips out a bulky Y2K cell phone (I knew she was rich) and calls her friend freaking out over talking to THE Donnie Stevens. She admits to having a plan to make Donnie ask her out, and that’s the only reason she’s hanging out with “his lame sister.” What a loser, for real. Thank the lawwd for Louis’ hidden cameras.
Tumblr media
Louis is upset and tries subtly telling Ren by warning her that June “isn’t as cool as you think she is.” But of course Ren is all “JUNE MARIE IS THE COOLEST PERSON I KNOW!!!!!!!” - I hate when people refuse to listen to other people like their own family members when they're trying to help them. I wanna slap Ren.
We get a mirror talk mid-episode from Louis in the bathroom about how he has to find some clever way to tell Ren to make her believe him. Yay! Caring Louis looking out for his big sis! His deep speech (accompanied by sad piano) ends with a curveball joke. (”...The worst part is........ I got a zit the size of a volkswagen.”) Shia's phrasing is always on point. I laughed. The joke helps saves the scene from becoming an overly sentimental, cheesy parody of itself.
Tumblr media
We find out that Steve and Eileen have Louis’ tape and....... they accidentally taped over it. THE HORROR!!! If you lived through the era of VHS tapes, you understand. There's no "undo" option, people! This scene gets me so mad every time. Of course Louis is asleep when this is revealed on hidden camera. Louis is so smart, but he spends the rest of the episode completely oblivious to the fact that the tape is right under his nose. It’s cute.
Louis decides to write June Marie a note signed “Donnie” asking her to come over for a date. She shows up right on time, overly eager and dressed for the Oscars -- coming onto Donnie full-force.
Tumblr media
I just noticed it looks like they’re actually at the real house for this shot??? Or that could just be a painting in the background. Probably.
Louis set everything up so that he could show Ren the live stream of June being a [Raven Voice] ‘lil nasty. She’s curling into Donnie’s side on the couch saying “I’m so glad we finally got together. I only became Ren’s mentor to get to know you better.”
Tumblr media
Ren gets so heated, she marches downstairs and tells June Marie offffffff for being a two-faced liar and a terrible role model. Donnie’s caught in the middle of it and has absolutely no idea what’s going on:
Tumblr media
Same, Donnie.
But, yaaaaassss Louis for #exposing June Marie. And yaaaaaassss Ren for confronting her. (”I got news for you, Little Miss Pretentious... I can get that job on the yearbook without your help.”) The sass level is through the roof. I love it. It's always satisfying to see a snake like June get rightfully stepped on.
Ren yells at Louis for not telling her about June but....... he did tell you, Ren!! That’s what you get for not listening to your family.
The scene that follows feels like an ad-lib. Shia and Christy are genuinely laughing. I’ve mentioned this a million times before, but according to Shia they ad-lib’d quite a bit on this show. I think this is one of those instances. It’s great.
Tumblr media
The episode ends with Eileen telling Steve to burn Louis’ tape. Meanwhile, Louis is still hoping to get it back. It’s supposed to be funny, but it honestly makes my skin crawl. I'm so sad for him D:
And that’s it! I remembered not being all that crazy about this one simply because it’s clear in my memory due to it airing very frequently. But it's actually a pretty satisfying and slightly scandalous story, haha. My only issue is that this episode is incrediblyyy slow paced. In most cases, that’s one of the things I love about the first season. But, here it just kinda draaags on a bit.
The best aspect, of course, is Louis wanting to help Ren. Whenever they focus on the brother/sister dynamic, the show really shines because that is the foundation! Like, hello! Louis and Ren are the Stevens who are constantly trying to... get Even! So, yeah. I like when their relationship is highlighted in some way. For a more Ren-Centric episode, this one is pretty good. Although, this is another episode that involves a one-off character. This is something we see a lot in the first season, which I don’t understand??? The freaking premiere episode was about a random guy. This episode is about some random chick. The next episode is about Yvette. The episode after that is about some random dude. Like..... who decided that a chunk of Season 1, a.k.a. everyone’s first exposure to Even Stevens, should basically not fully focus on the main characters? Idgi. Might just be a symptom of the show trying to find its legs.
At least this is a case where they found a seamless way to combine the two plot lines. A story like this also helps Louis come across as endearing. So that’s good. :)
Thanks for reading! Thoughts? Leave them below!

⊰ ♚— banks inspired plots
okay a series of plots inspired by gemini genius banks, her music is too good to not have plots derive from them, so enjoy ! i’ve chosen a select few from both albums, goddess & the altar. the muses in all plots are more than able to be interchangeable, i wrote this neutrally and i try to veer away from the typically ‘m/f’ setup.
this is what it feels like: muse a & b are the no strings attached type so when they embark on their routine engagement it starts out fine. however, muse a being pretty detached and independent, often gives muse b the cold shoulder outside of their little hookups. however it starts to feel exclusive to muse b since both of them aren’t running around with other people and just confiding in each other for their needs. there’s something about the push and pull that they receive from muse a that starts to attract them all the more. muse a starts to notice the difference in muse b’s behavior and warns them to not ruin what they have. however there’s something pleasantly convenient they also find in muse b, which starts to annoy them. as a result they push muse b away and start to blame them for potentially destroying something good. muse b despite the accusations fights back and insinuates that muse a also has feelings for them and calls them out on their stubborn independence. this leads to a large window of not talking to each other, which drives muse a up the wall, simply because their quick fix is missing and that they may be developing more feelings being away from muse b. when they agree to meet again, muse a apologizes and owns up to their behavior and tries to work out a compromise in their relationship, something slow and not too fast, but muse b is quick to reciprocate the dismissive behavior muse a showed them earlier. giving them a taste of their own medicine and only further increasing the tension between them and making hookups all the more intense and secretly a battle to overcome their own stupidity.
fuck with myself:  muse b is school president and muse a is ahead of yearbook. muse b is everyone’s ‘what if’ around school and muse a is in the shadows taking pictures, just trying to survive senior year. the night of a school drive-in fundraiser, muse a actually enjoys attending, because they like the movie choice. however they bump into muse b and muse b is quick to mention how muse a needs to take good pictures for tonight, which prompts muse a to fire back with a witty remark and muse b to do the same out of amusement. from there, the same happens at other events, the two of them taunting each other and warming up to one another. muse a mentions that they were surprised the two of them ended up being friends and muse b implies that they hope they’ll be a bit more than friends. muse a tries to fight the urge not to take the bait so they make some remark about the boring event, while muse a lazily fiddles with the camera leaving, them both to go on a tangent about people at school and shit talking mostly on muse b’s end. muse b then starts to make more of an effort to hang out with muse a around school, which starts catching eyes, even muse a is a little caught of guard, but they’re not against it. it’s when muse a overhears some student council members going on about how muse a is stupid if they believe muse b truly likes them and instead not just using them to look good for colleges with all the events they’ve been capturing muse b in. this frustrates muse a and they start to avoid muse b, ignoring their texts and occasional snaps, even at events, they manage to dodge muse b. it’s when muse a starts to go through their camera one night that they realized they were accidentally filming, but the lens was pointed at the ground, vaguely aimed at both theirs and muse b’s shoes. it just when they’re about to delete it, they hear all the shit talking muse b had to say about the student body and faculty; thus spawning an idea. the next day at school, muse a might’ve slipped the audio to the school paper & not only that, but labeled it as a special announcement for the school to hear on the intercom. muse a purposely turns to muse b while in class, with their camera angled on them just to catch their face when they hear themselves on the intercom, pettily taking the photo topped off with a remark about future colleges enjoying the moment when the student body turned against the president.
change: muse a is stuck in an emotionally abusive relationship with muse b that they didn’t see coming. the two were a an online dating pairing that went right, seemingly so up until the third month when muse b started making poor remarks about muse a’s ‘habits’. muse a having this brought to their attention, becomes more mindful of it around muse b. once muse b notices how receptive they are to ‘critique’ they continue to press on about little things. muse a wanting to please muse b and also understand why suddenly these things are bothering them so deeply, start to doubt themselves and begin to believe they’re becoming a nuisance. however muse a always yearns for reconcile for the sake of their relationship, one that muse b isn’t all that much interested in, they prefer to keep muse a walking on eggshells. though muse a starts to compromise pieces of themselves for muse b, they can’t help but start to get angry with never being able to please them. so when muse a speaks up about it, by finally snapping at muse b, they notice the shift in power. muse b suddenly jarred by the callout on their own behavior breaks down and becomes very vulnerable, explaining that they’re aware of their ways and blame it on their upbringing, they vow to change. muse a actually believes them and things start to feel a little better for a short window of what was almost happiness, before muse b is back at it, only more intense and belittling muse a to the point of tears. in muse a’s frustration they threaten to leave which sends muse b back to vowing they’ll change. it’s not long before it becomes a cycle of picking, threatening and vowing, how long will it go before muse a finally has enough?
waiting game: muse a is a songwriter and has a great voice, but avoids the starlight and spends a lot of time co-writing songs with muse b who’s a very successful artist. through constantly working together on late nights and sharing vulnerable moments between pouring some of their personal experiences into their own music, they begin to form an strongly empathetic bond between one another, which only helps their relationship. muse a, is the better songwriter of the two and even muse b says and believes so and constantly encourages them to release their own music. muse a still weary of life in lights, always shies away from the idea, until muse b coaxes them to sing in front of a small listening party — which they’ve done many times before, but only muse b sneakily told their manager that they wanted to bring muse a along for the tour as an opener and that they had a small performance ready. by the time muse a finishes, muse b’s manager insists that muse a join a short leg of the tour and informs them that they’ll be drawing up a contract. muse a baffled by the whole ordeal pulls muse b aside to scold them, but can’t seem to be too upset in the moment, because they did doubt their own abilities of being good enough for a crowd that muse b would entertain on stage and now they’ve been proven wrong. once the tour begins, muse a starts fitting into the shoes they’ve been put in with muse b to encourage them along the way. they sneak around just to explore different cities and write songs late at night and stay up talking about the rush of performing. when muse a kisses muse b one night and muse b kisses back but they don’t go all the way, but it gets fairly intimate. the next day, things are seemingly swell between the two, no awkward air or undeniable tension, but that shifts just as the tour comes to an end and muse b is seen with some actor(ess) in the tabloids and muse a feels cheated. when they address it to muse b, they rebuttal with the two of them just ‘ having fun on tour. ‘ this angers muse a all the more and they decide to let muse b keep the songs they worked while on tour, for their next album and completely disassociate from them. muse a makes a new name for themselves as a rising artist and releases a whole album dragging muse b’s name through the mud, without actually saying their name, this triggers muse b to bite back. it ends up turning into passively passionate songs about one another that the public slowly starts to catch onto and can’t help but feed off their drama.
under the table: muse b doesn’t necessarily mask their sexuality, but they don’t really care to make it known to everyone. they’re grey when it comes to that area, but it doesn’t bother them all that much unless it comes to muse a. muse a whom was their friend back in grade school, whom they’ve reunited with in college, they’re comfortable with their sexuality and live their life as is. something admirable in muse b’s eyes and only grows to admire the person they’ve become since they were young. time to time they’ll open up about the concept of sexuality and tend to vent over societal ideas to muse a, while they listen to music in their dorms just staring at the ceiling. more often than not they have deep talks which only draws muse b more to muse a due to their open mindedness and leads to them confessing that they have feelings for muse a. muse a has known that muse b was falling for them and mentions they were waiting for muse b to be comfortable enough to admit it. the two don’t start necessarily dating or hookup either, it’s more of sharing an intimate space between each other, one that muse b begins to favor so much more than they would’ve thought, but doesn’t last long. muse b had failed to mention that muse c is back in town after studying abroad. muse c being their significant other, that they conveniently never mentioned or ever discussed their sexuality with. muse a doesn’t lash out or leave muse b behind, but express the confusion and hurt they feel, but they know muse b doesn’t want to lose them and that muse c just doesn’t understand them the way they do. when muse c meets muse a, they’re introduced as a friend of muse b’s. muse c being completely unsuspecting, invites muse a to hang with them more often. which leads to the guilt and slight tension muse b feels about the two of them being together, like there isn’t an elephant in the room. can muse b find the heart to lay it all out on the table or will muse a just linger around hopelessly waiting or will muse c start to pick up on something?
crowded places: muse a & b are old friends, but ran with different crowds and split ways, they’d meet somewhere in the middle, before parting again. it was always a roller coaster for them, hot and cold, wondering if the other will reject them with all the time spent apart. despite that underlying thought, they managed to pick up where they left off. it’s when muse a finds out muse b was in a bad accident, that they drop everything to be at their side. muse b spends about a week in the hospital, but they’ll be okay, as a result they’re still a bit sensitive to loud & sudden noises. muse a vows to take care of them until muse b recovers. thus leads to muse a sleeping over a lot ‘ just like old times ‘ and never acting like muse b has changed. muse a feels a new sense of protection for them and begins to blame themselves for not being there sooner. muse b insists it wasn’t their fault, but muse a confesses to their stupidity back in school by allowing their groups to dictate who they hung around and thanking muse b for not giving up on them. as weeks go by they insist that muse a step back a little to give muse b a chance to readjust to daily activities and surroundings again. muse a being weary agrees but stresses muse b to call if anything happens and they’ll be there instantly. muse b takes on the day only to become overwhelmed unexpectedly, primarily from being a bit too sheltered and comfortable in their home with muse a, and tries to find the will to power through it, despite wanting to call muse a. muse a must’ve sensed something was off later in the day, because when they call muse b and hear a croaked voice on the other end, they rush over to where muse b says they’re at; to find muse b crying in a stall of some public restroom. within seconds muse a comes to their aid and takes them home and it’s just a platonic plot about loyalty in a long lasting friendship.

MEET THE REPORTER WHO MADE AMERICA LISTEN TO THE CHILDREN AT THE BORDER
Because some of the most impactful stories in journalism are the ones that let the subjects speak for themselves.
At first, Ginger Thompson could hardly believe what she was hearing on the audiotape. What she could make out were several young children from Central America sobbing and crying out for “Mami” and “Papá.” One girl begs for somebody to phone her aunt. Then comes a grown-up male voice, a Border Patrol agent responding to the chaotic scene. “Well, we have an orchestra here,” he quips. “What’s missing is a conductor.”
A BORDER-TOWN ARMY BRAT
It was no accident that the impactful audio found its way to Thompson, 55, a senior reporter for ProPublica. She has spent her career following developments along the U.S.-Mexico border. Her whole life, really. An Army brat, she grew up in El Paso, Texas, the border city where her father was stationed. She learned Spanish at an early age and spent many weekends across the border in Ciudad Juárez with her friends and their families. “Living on the border,” says Thompson, “being a part of that school, and being a part of this very mixed community — military families, immigrant families, longtime Texan families — it was just a really interesting place to grow up.”  Thompson fell in love with writing and telling other people’s stories, not as a journalist but as editor of her (award-winning) high school yearbook. “We really focused,” says Thompson, who ranked second in her class. “It was more like a local reporting organization.”
A love of storytelling and a desire to travel led her into journalism. Before joining ProPublica, Thompson, who has degrees from Purdue University and George Washington University, spent 15 years at The New York Times as the Mexico City bureau chief and as an investigative reporter. Among other things, her stories have uncovered U.S. support for a Honduran military unit that kidnapped and murdered hundreds of suspected political opponents, and Washington’s role in Mexico’s fight against drug traffickers. She doesn’t seek out danger, but it has found her, and on more than one occasion she has had to talk her way out of captivity from armed criminal gangs. And it was Thompson’s daring and meticulous work in Central America that brought her to the attention of someone else.
THE STORY OF A LIFTIME
In June 2018, someone came to Jennifer Harbury, an attorney and civil rights activist based in the border town of Weslaco, Texas, seeking legal advice about how to release a tape recording they had made of the children crying in the detention center. Harbury has never publicly disclosed the identity of that whistleblower for a variety of reasons, including attorney-client privilege, but she claims it is someone she has known for years who has “extremely high credibility.” Harbury took the individual on as a client and promised to act as a go-between with journalists to ensure the tape could be made public responsibly.   And Harbury had one particular journalist in mind. “I’ve always really respected her courage,” Harbury says of Thompson, whose reporting in Central America she had long admired, even if she didn’t know Thompson personally. “She’s always been a top-notch writer who carefully checks out her stories and has tons of credibility. And she is fearless.”
After Thompson received the damning audiotape from Harbury, she immediately went into reporter mode. She knew that before the tape could be made public, it was critical to ensure that it was real and presented in the proper way. Thompson quickly set about verifying that the audio was authentic, including confirming the identity of the girl (by dialing the number the girl offers on the recording) as well as the identity of the source, that the source had access to the Border Patrol facility, and that the recording was unedited and representative of what was transpiring at the facility. Thompson, who describes herself as a perfectionist, recalls: "What was important was for me to analyze it, get the material I needed, and to get that tape up so that it might matter and mean something.”
She learned that the children on the recording are between 4 and 10 years old, and they had only just been separated from their parents. Their emotions are raw. Those working at the facility are doing their best to comfort the children and provide them with food and toys. According to Thompson’s reporting, even the officer making a joke about the “orchestra” is doing so in a vain attempt to lighten the mood. But he can’t. The kids are inconsolable.
Thompson worked most of the weekend on the story. She barely changed out of her pajamas. Shortly after her story was published, she recalls taking a shower when she heard the tape being played on television. She had listened to the tape a dozen times in order to write about it. But she hadn’t let it sink in. “It was the first time I really heard the tape as Ginger the human being, and not Ginger the reporter,” she says, “and that’s when the sounds of those voices began to really affect me.”
"ABSOLUTELY GUT-WRENCHING & BEYOND DISTURBING"
Thompson was not the only one stirred by the tape. “Heartbreaking,” New York Democratic Rep. Adriano Espaillat and Virginia Democratic Sen. Mark Warner tweeted about the recording after the release of Thompson’s story. “Absolutely gut-wrenching & beyond disturbing,” said Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto, a Nevada Democrat. Most Americans, including members of Congress, had known for weeks about the Trump administration’s “zero tolerance” immigration policy, which had separated more than 2,300 children from their parents since that April, and it had been condemned from all sides. The American Academy of Pediatrics argued the policy would cause the children “irreparable harm.” Former first lady Laura Bush called it “cruel” and “immoral.”   But it wasn’t until Thompson’s story and the release of the audio that the horrifying human consequences of the border drama grabbed America by the collar. The resulting public sentiment and political pressure forced the administration to announce that it would end its child separation policy and attempt to reunify those who had already been separated. “I was very heartened that people on both sides of the political divide were horrified when they heard the tape,” says Harbury, “and stood up immediately and said, ‘No way. That’s going too far.’”
Administration officials responded quickly to the tape’s release. “We will not apologize,”
Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen told reporters regarding the child separation policy, claiming that the administration was only enforcing the law and it would be up to Congress to change it. One senior Homeland Security official told OZY on condition of anonymity that the detention centers were never meant to house so many immigrants. "They were meant to be wait-through stations," the official said, adding that Democratic lawmakers' refusal to approve additional funds for the department left them with few options once the number of daily migrant crossings rose. “We are doing the right thing. We are taking care of these children. They are not being abused,” former Attorney General Jeff Sessions told Fox News’ Laura Ingraham.
But, for many who work on the ground at the border, Thompson’s story was huge. The story “woke a different level of discussion about what is happening,” says Alejandra Y. Castillo, the CEO of YWCA USA, which works on issues related to the migrant crisis and protecting women and children.
Thompson’s journalism was also inspiring for many in the business, including students at Columbia University’s journalism school, where Thompson is an adjunct faculty member. “She is a role model for them, a journalist who nails the story and reflects all sides with intelligence and understanding,” says Sheila Coronel, an award-winning investigative journalist and dean of academic affairs at Columbia.  The response to the story was gratifying for Thompson, who describes herself as generally pretty shy and “not a cheerleader type.” She was forced out of her comfort zone in the wake of the news-shattering headlines and found herself on the other side of the story as the subject of television and radio interviews. "I don’t love being in front of cameras, but I love telling the stories of other people,” she says. “When it comes to putting forth issues that are important, or standing up for issues involving other people, I am not at all afraid.”
CONTINUING SEPARATION ANXIETY
In some cases, as Thompson’s subsequent reporting confirmed, the Trump administration’s attempts at reunification were successful. The 6-year-old girl on the tape who wanted to   phone her aunt, a Salvadoran immigrant named Jimena Valencia Madrid (see Jimena's story in the sidebar), was finally reunited with her mother, Cindy, at a Houston airport the next month.
But even where reunification occurs, separation can be a life-shattering event. According to Castillo, whose organization works with displaced families all the time, there is something even worse than children crying on tape: the children who don’t cry because the trauma is so deep. “My concern is that the infliction of the trauma will be lasting for many, many years, if not for a lifetime,” she says.
And, despite the public retreat from the policy, in the weeks and months since, border agents have continued to remove children from their parents as the administration remained committed to its goal of deterring asylum-seekers. According to Harbury, families are still being separated, and not reunited, despite the administration’s supposed pivot. Many times children are plucked from parents who are charged with mere misdemeanors. “It’s as if you get a parking ticket,” says Harbury, “and the police come by your house and take away your children.” Many in the Trump administration believe its tactics are working: Immigrants “in custody” fell from a stunning 20,000 in May to around 3,000 in December 2019, while daily apprehensions dropped from 4,600 to just 1,300 in that same period, acting U.S. Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Mark Morgan reported in January.
In recent days, activists have been trying to remind Americans of the outrage they felt in 2018 over the audiotape and the child separation policy. While performing “Born in the U.S.A.” during the Super Bowl half-time show, Jennifer Lopez was surrounded by children in cage-like enclosures. The following day, caucusgoers in Des Moines, Iowa, were confronted with dozens of chain-link cages holding fake children under signs reading “#Don’t Look Away.”
Still, it has been hard to re-create the impact of hearing from the children themselves, the ones who, as Thompson told NPR after the tape had been released, have the most at stake. “Unless we hear from the children, we don’t have a real understanding of what it is, of what this policy is and what it’s doing.”
AN “ALL-HANDS-ON-DECK MOMENT”
Thompson, who last year married her longtime partner, Tony Cavin, a deputy foreign editor at CBS News, continues to keep busy with her reporting. She doesn’t really have hobbies, she says, but loves reading a good book on the beach when she can get away. “I was on a train with a colleague who was going to take a guitar lesson recently. I was so jealous,” she jokes.  Although Thompson loves her work and takes it very seriously, she demurs when confronted with how courageous others consider her to be. She feels the courage lies elsewhere: “The person who shared this tape with Jennifer, who was willing to talk to me about how they obtained the tape, people who are whistleblowers at the risk of losing their jobs,” she says. “I’m inspired by their courage.”  Thompson plans to continue to report about hard places and vulnerable people and to speak truth to power, and she is constantly looking for new ways to tell stories, from documentaries to podcasts. “My plan is to keep finding big and important stories to tell,” she says. “In these times, with all that’s going on in the country and at the border, it feels almost like an all-hands-on-deck moment.”

Silent Night Collaboration
By: Joe S.
Ed. Note: Joe put together a fantastic opera program for his school, based on the “Silent Night” opera performed at The Atlanta Opera. This program was so well done that it is now being looked at on an international level. We are proud to include Joe as an Opera Teen!
I created The Silent Night Collaboration Project as an innovative approach to learning History by combining the educational strength of Lambert High School with the musical skill of The Atlanta Opera.  This collaboration brings to the classroom the story of the World War I Christmas Truce of 1914, and is based on the opera’s production of the Pulitzer Prize winning opera “Silent Night.”
Throughout the summer and into the school year, I spent more than three months researching the details of the Christmas Truce, then created lesson plans and study guides for different disciplines, which allow students to understand the historic event from varying perspectives.  The Atlanta Opera provided these lesson plans and study guides to all Metro Atlanta Area Schools prior to their production, so that each student could benefit from the project.  The collaboration is designed for cross-curricular teaching and provides a perfect opportunity for students to make new connections between the music, history, and seemingly unrelated subjects.  Connections were made on a classroom level, on a school-wide level (in the form of the Collaborative Performance Event), and at community-wide level (at The Atlanta Opera’s production of the opera “Silent Night”).
Each lesson plan is for one class period and includes a description and objective.  All have an activity assignment and require an assessment of the student at the end of the lesson.  Lesson Plan subjects include Social Studies, Art, Drama/Theater, English/Language Arts, Music, Business and Marketing, and Audio/Visual Tech.
The Silent Night Collaboration Event was the focal point of this project.  The multi-media event took place on October 27, 2016, at Lambert High School.  Over 400 students and faculty attended this event, which included performances by Lambert’s Theater, Orchestra, Chorus, and Dance departments, as well as a special guest appearance by members of The Atlanta Opera.  Also represented were Lambert’s Photography, Newspaper, and Yearbook staff who documented the concert, the Marketing department who designed programs, the Culinary department who provided a reception for VIPs, Compass and the National Social Studies Honor Society who passed out programs and greeted guests, and finally, the  AP Art departments whose reimagined propaganda artwork was displayed at this event, as well as at the Cobb Energy Centre for the entire run of The Atlanta Opera’s production of “Silent Night.”
The final portion of The Silent Night Collaboration Project was The Atlanta Opera’s production of “Silent Night.”  Lambert students were invited to the final dress rehearsal of the opera and were given the opportunity to meet “Silent Night’s” Pulitzer Prize-winning composer and librettist Kevin Puts and Mark Campbell.  LHS AP Art and Photography students’ work, as well as informational posters describing the collaboration, were on display in the Cobb energy Centre Lobby from November 3-13, 2016.
Additionally, the marketing department at my high school suggested I take this project to the state level DECA competition in February, where I qualified for the international level competition in Anaheim, California. It will be great to show the project to an even larger audience, as well as inspire more people to take up similar projects in the future.
I have grown up with the Atlanta Opera, and I am consistently blown away by this legendary art form. Media coverage for the Silent Night Collaboration has been outstanding; between print and social media, I estimate it reached nearly 80,000 people. For more information, lesson plans, and photos of the events, please visit www.silentnight2016.weebly.com.
