If you wanted to record a TV show, you either had to manually start and stop the recording or set a timer in the VCR's primitive onscreen settings menu (at least the VCRs from when I was a kid in the 90s/early 2000s).
There was no program guide where you could select a specific show, you had to enter the start time and how long you wanted it to record and at what speed (slower tape speeds meant more recording time but lower quality, higher tape speeds meant more quality but less recording time).
You could set it to repeat the recording schedule on certain days of the week but you had to hope the TV schedule stayed exactly the same and there weren't any specials airing instead of your show during the record time.
Being in the US, I would typically use T-120 tapes which would record 2 hours at SP speed ("normal" quality) or 6 hours at EP/SLP speed (lowest quality).
Analog picture signals don't have pixels, the smallest unit is a full horizontal line. Each line of the picture would get a certain amount of bandwidth/space to be stored on the tape depending on the speed.
Compared to broadcast TV, VHS tapes have the full vertical resolution (how many lines of picture) but less than half the horizontal resolution (bandwidth for each line). The horizontal resolution/bandwidth would decrease with each slower tape speed.
Oh god, I just aged several years in a single second, a friend of mine sent me a snippet from a fic that read someone put a VHS into a VCR and took so long getting back to it to press play that the menu screen had looped multiple times
