Mererid’s Gardens
Mererid puts a lot of pride into his ability as a gardener (and plant enthusiast) and deicides what gets planted and where. There are many gardens spread through the Imperial Palace, inside and out.
Outside are many vegetable patches and groves of fruit bearing plants.
Mererid ensures that the vegetable patches have:
Carrots: Three types appear in the patches; Candysnax which is delightfully sweet and disease resistant carrot, Purple Sun, a dark purple carrot that when cut open reveals a yellow/orange sunburst in the middle, and Dragon, a more wild variety of carrot that is a but spicy similar to radishes. Mererid himself prefers the Dragon variety while our dear Emperor will sneak the Candysnax variety out of harvest basket not being actively tended to. Purple Suns are used during banquets and feasts, as out of the darkness comes the sun.
Celeriac: Also known as Celery Root is a wonderful little nutty tasting root that stores incredibly well and makes for a good snack that’s easy to eat even while working in the gardens, throughout the palace, or behind a desk or pacing. Also used in many stews and will occasionally be served mashed at dinner.
Garlic is a staple in the Imperial Palace and among Nilfgaard in general, every house has some. The two varieties you’ll find are; Bavarian Purple, noted for its very strong flavor, and the Chesknok Red, which is incredibly nice in cooking. Bavarain Red is mostly used chopped or fined diced in spreads and dips. The cooks in the palace will use recipes from anywhere, however they always add more garlic than the recipe calls for. Who only uses 1 clove of garlic?!
Lettuce is another staple with two varieties. Milagro, a hearty disease resistant lettuce that is sweet and tender, Butter Crunch which does well in hot summers and into the fall season and holds well for a lettuce. Bullet Lettuce is sprinkled throughout as a sort of ‘back-up’ lettuce as it is a vigorous and hardy type.
Arugula which is mainly used in salads for small dinners hosted by the Emperor, comes in two types; Bellezia which is a hardy type, great for the sometimes drastic changes in between Nilfgaard seasons; and Speedy, which is quick to harvest.
Onions pop up in almost every vegetable patch as they are used for almost every dinner, feast, and banquet within the palace. Among the varieties you’ll find Oneida, a large onion that stores well for long periods of time; Monastrell, a disease and sun burn resistant type that’s a boon in the summer time; and Talon, a type of onion that can grow almost anywhere, even where most won’t even start to try and have a long storage life. A chef once accidentally dropped sliced onion into hot oil and now both Mererid and Emhyr can’t seem to get enough of fried onions. A few guests have also taken to them and try to replicate the dish.
Wega Parsley is the main strain of parsley you’ll find throughout Nilfgaard known for its tough nature that prevents bolting and bitterness and can be harvested late in the growing season.
Pepper plants pop up in planters around the palace they serve as colorful decoration and a source of food. Candy Cane Chocolate Cherry are best at being both. Their foliage is fantastic and the peppers produced are sweet and crisp. Emhyr hates noisy food, any crunching or slurping will drive him mad(more so than usual I suppose) but he makes an exception when Mererid munches on these as the man looks too damn happy to guillotine. Padron, a shishito like pepper that is sturdy and produces peppers all season long for a continuous harvest.
Potatoes are found in large numbers in a few patches with Dark Red Norlands, which produce a heavy yield and are disease resistant, to the Carola which are resistant to disease but still require monitoring but, produce a heavy harvest. A staple on the plate of almost every dinner and feast. Do not mash them, the Emperor will have your head for it. Mererid bless him, can only sigh and shake his head and secretly mash potatoes for him and few others servants/slaves.
Sweet Potatoes, a favorite of the Emperor when roasted with salt and olive oil. The Beauregard is the go to for being sweet and does well in cooler times.
Radishes, of which Mererid will go out and get a few and eat straight from the garden, you’ll find the Nile, which does well in heat, produces a sweet spicy root and edible leaves used for cooking. The Celeste can be found near fall as the are wet/cold tolerant and can stay in the field for sometime before being unharvestable.
Squashes of many varieties can be found; the Chiffon which grows upwards on tresses, or Cube of Butter which is a low growing kind with a heavy harvest. Butterbaby saves some room on the ground by growing on tresses like the Chiffon and is known for a sweet and rich fruit. The Golden Star has a tight plant and is disease resistant with a continuous harvest. Squash rarely shows up on the Emperor’s plate, Mererid however will always take some if there is any to be had, just a small bit.
Olympic Spinach can be found year round in the vegetable patches and on the table, Emhyr likes a good strawberry spinach salad and it’s an almost guaranteed way to make him eat something, at least in the summer time.

1, 5, 10, 11, 13, 26, 29, 32. ~Starry
1. What color are your socks?
Red, yellow, and white!
5. When was the last time you wrote someone a letter on paper?
Yesterday
10. Have you ever use a Ouija board?
A Luigi board? Wega Board? Nah- but not because I’m scared of them or anything. I just think they’re bullshit and that there are much better ways to contact spirits than with something invented by a toy company.
11. What’s the last song you sang?
House a Habit by We Are the Guests (Wynd is getting me into indie folk music and I’m kinda mad about it)
13. What’s your favorite urban legend?
Well, I’m from Kansas so I’m tempted to say Devil’s Chair but I live in Missouri and like how could I NOT say Momo
26. Do people often mispronounce your name?
Asks the person who accused me of lying the first time I told you how it was spelled. But yes, my name tag at both places of work has a pronunciation guide on it and they still fuck it up.
29. Who was the last person you said you loved to?
[redacted]
32. What was the last thing you cooked?
Beer cheese soup and toasted ravioli

When we speak of the fixed stars in astrology, we speak about objects so distant that we're light years away from calling them our property. There are 15 chosen fixed stars that are called "Royal stars" and we will meet them through our upcoming posts. I found my music twin! It was only shortly after we met that we started talking about the frat house playing All American Rejects down the street, and then mentioned emo music, then the fact that nobody knows Marianas Trench because they’re Canadian. We bonded over One Republic, Oh Wonder, Matt Kearney, and more songs! After years of being out of the loop on music, it was so refreshing to give someone recommendations with confidence!
All the Japan photos are up. Watching your name. on the plane ride back home was the icing on the cake that gave me plenty to cry about. I miss the residential vending machines, onigiri, and high quality stationary (so much blood, sweat, and tears for more alpha-gel pencils after I lost 2 over the course of my college career). I don’t miss being stared at for wearing “really short American shorts.” I also don’t miss the availability of fresh fruits here in the States. A friend told me that when she got home, she started devouring mangoes, much to the surprise of her mom.
Two dance auditions in one week, and I’m sore EVERYWHERE for the whole week. Hiking the fire trails made me sore. Choreography and condition were hard, but I’m picking things up much faster than I was a couple semesters ago! Not to mention, the chemistry area at my school is the most amazing place to kick around a soccer ball after dark. The past 6 months have provided me the most fun exercise in my life, and it feels awesome. I bought a new pair of beautiful running shoes for 20% off as well.
Supervisors at work who care about good communication, guidance, and encouragement are amazing! Too bad the position is temporary, although it does motivate me to keep applying to jobs throughout the weeks.
I’m so happy that I made a stupid Youtube reference about the “weggy board” and an acquaintance UNDERSTOOD IT over a group dinner! All hail wega borad and starch masks.
I think I know myself well when I say that I needed a gap year or two. My undergrad experience was filled with a lot of stress, ugly crying, self-doubt in my abilities, uncertainty about the future, and the constant worry that I was both boring and inefficient at managing my time. If I talked to my freshman and sophomore self, I’d want to give myself hugs but also slap myself in the face like evil Kermit. If I went to office hours every week, sat down humbly, and tried to learn with a growth mindset rather than the mindset that I was stupid, perhaps I would have done better in the classes I performed the worst in. And if I stopped comparing myself to others, I’d be in a much better place mentally for most of my classes.
Failure taught me the importance of letting go of my pride, being unafraid to ask questions, and really giving it my all. My last semester, I took a class in which an underclassman intimidated me at first - he was well-spoken and didn’t really pay attention in lab to review material. I was surprised when he preferred to work together with me through the labs, then realized I could explain concepts to him that I’d paid extra attention to. I don’t think he’d admit that he looked up to me, but regardless, I still felt pretty happy that we were able to support each other and collaborate :D Whatever, man - I’ll pay attention during my lectures and do the readings because we’re paying for this education!
So basically, life is reasonably good, I’m tired, and I’m going to sleep.

5 New Coffee Bars From Berlin’s Remarkable Scene
Step into Berlin from abroad and you might be surprised. In many ways this global city prizes nonchalance, resulting in a palpable resistance to the attention-seeking retail presence commonplace in other major cities. Here, cafes are hidden behind nondescript signage, cash is king, and true quality is married to subtlety.
Walk any neighborhood in Berlin, cell phone in hand, and your favorite apps will fail you in your quest to find world-class coffee. Yet it exists in every neighborhood—hidden jewels only locals can tell you about, or delivered by serendipity if you walk the streets and take a few chances yourself.
Unique hole-in-the-wall pop ups and famous well-established roasteries, even Berlin’s first cannabis cafe, show that Berlin is evolving fast and that good coffee options are appreciated and in demand. It’s a certainty that this year (and decade) will bring even more variety. Indeed, Berlin is one of our most thoroughly guided cities on Sprudge—we’ve published multiple city features [1 & 2] plus zoomed in features on neighborhoods like Kreuzberg, Mitte, and Prenzlauer Berg, yet still there’s more to see.
In this guide, we’re featuring new or new-to-us cafes from all across the city. For even more coverage, consult our Berlin archives, and don’t miss this handy natural wine guide from Susie Kealy for Sprudge Wine—after all the coffee you’ll certainly need a splash.
19grams
The first on the list is 19grams, which despite opening in the height of summer 2018, is just hitting its stride in the local scene. It’s a highly ambitious feat of a roastery, cafe, and daytime restaurant all under one roof. Located under the shadow of the iconic TV tower (Fernsehturm) and Alexanderplatz, what most Berliners would dismiss as a touristy locale, the cafe defies expectations with gusto. Staff have a combined 20 years of experience from other cafes in Berlin and have come together at 19grams to really showcase their knowledge and passion for coffee. Partner Garrit Peters sees the spacious facility as a full coffee experience. “It’s a cafe and roastery where you can see, touch, feel, and smell the process of roasting coffee, and a school where anybody interested can learn about specialty coffee.” (19grams offers coffee courses in case you want to improve your barista skills.)
The Aussie-influenced food menu is seasonal and it’s probably some of the best value and quality you can find in the area. Everything is made in-house, from the cakes and pastries to the bread featured in the changing dishes. Lunchtime is the best time to stop in before the kitchen closes at 3:00 pm, but sandwiches and sweet treats are always on hand in case you arrive too late. The coffee is supplied by La Marzocco machines and Mahlkönig PEAK as well as an EK43 grinder. There are also Chemex, AeroPress, and V60 drippers on hand.
19grams is located at Karl-Liebknecht-Str. 13, 10178 Berlin. Visit their official website and follow them on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
Kioski
Seek out Kioski—a bright yellow square kiosk that sits in the middle of a Hof, or German courtyard, in an office block in Kreuzberg. This is one of the cafes that you’ll come across through word of mouth or a happy accident, seeing as it’s not situated on the street.
Co-owner Martin von Löw fell in love with a vintage K67-model vending kiosk in Ljubljana, Slovenia and knew it was destined for greatness. The K67 was a mass-produced 1960’s kiosk design popularized in modern-day Slovenia (under the former Yugoslavia) most notable for its eye-catching shape and vibrant school-bus-yellow color. Martin explains, “In cooperation with the architect Saša Mächtig, who designed the K67 in the ’60s, we were able to bring the kiosk back to its original condition.” After being brought over to Berlin, it was furnished and equipped with an up-to-date interior with the help of About Space design studio. The result is Kioski, which doubles as an exhibition of design and a cafe at the same time. The cafe is headed by Martin and his wife, Ann-Marie von Löw, who carefully curate the coffee and daily lunch options.
Drawing from her Finnish heritage, von Löw showcases her roots in the menu. On offer, you’ll find a large variety of Finnish treats, like delicious Korvapuusti—cinnamon rolls with cardamom and a lot of butter. There are also Karjalanpiirakka or Karelian pirogs, which are Finnish rice-filled pies served with egg butter. Spanning other cultures, you’ll also find croissants, pretzels, pasteles de Nata, homemade cakes, sandwiches, and soup every Tuesday. The coffee is, of course, also a main attraction, especially in an office courtyard. An Atlas Wega Compatta machine and Wega Max grinder are the workhorses keeping patrons happily caffeinated.
Kioski is located at Ritterstraße 9, 10969 Berlin. Visit their official website and follow them on Facebook and Instagram.
Ketori Coffee
You wouldn’t even know you were next to Ketori unless you actively searched for it as your destination. Situated in a bar in Neukölln, Ketori operates in the off-hours of Bar Kuschlowski during the day when it isn’t quite 5:00 pm for a different sort of drink.
Coffee pros Eunsool Yeom and Ralf Weber wanted a place to experiment but weren’t quite sure where to take their ideas until one serendipitous night. Yeom says, “We were having dinner at Kuschlowski one night when we had a chat with the owners and after a couple of drinks, the idea was born—to use their space during the daytime as a pop-up.” Ketori opened two months later.
The cozy bar is a perfect choice for a café. Once inside, patrons can choose between either coffee or a variety of delicious homemade kombuchas. For coffee, there’s a La Marzocco Strada AV and Mahlkönig E65s, alongside hand grinders for the pour-overs. It’s a minimal setup, but ideal since the “cafe” part gets taken down every night when the bar opens and gets built again every morning. Ketori uses their own roasted beans for espresso drinks and a variety of local roasters for their pour-overs. In addition to the beverage options, there are also homemade vegan pastries that should not be missed.
Ketori Coffee is located inside Bar Kuschlowski at Weserstr. 202, 12047 Berlin. Follow them on Facebook and Instagram.
Five Elephant
Five Elephant is one of the most well-known roasteries in Berlin. They’ve already made their mark in the city with their Mitte and Kreuzberg cafes, but their latest opening is in one of Berlin’s most iconic locations, Kaufhaus des Westens (KaDeWe for short). The luxury mall, originally built in 1907, was mostly destroyed in World War II and had to be rebuilt. It was brought back to its former glory and has since become a landmark of West Berlin. The top two floors are dedicated to food, and it’s here that the newest Five Elephant has opened.
This new cafe, designed by Sunst Studio, showcases a handmade Terrazzo marble bar equipped with slick Modbar espresso and La Marzocco machines. The coffee roast options change according to the season. Unlike previous Five Elephant locations, there will be other drinks on offer, such as wine, beer, and even coffee cocktails. Their ever-popular cheesecake will also be available at Five Elephant KaDeWe along with a few other sweets.
Enjoying a coffee at Five Elephant KaDeWe is as much about the coffee as the experience of the space. The wide-open design allows and insists visitors to enjoy being in the bustling, centennial establishment and take it all in.
Five Elephant is located at Tauentzienstraße 21-24, 10789 Berlin. Visit their official website and follow them on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
Cafe Canna
Cafe Canna is one of the more interesting newcomers to Berlin’s coffee scene—and a bit of a departure. The cafe is the first in Berlin to serve CBD-infused drinks and treats. While cannabis is still not “legal” in the sense that it’s not available to everyone, as of 2017, medical cannabis has been legalized. The law shows a change in the public and legal perception of cannabis and how it may be legalized one day in Germany. For the meantime, CBD containing no more than 0.2% THC can be sold openly. [Ed note: If you’re looking for the stronger stuff, head to Görlitzer Park.]
Opened in August of 2019, Cafe Canna is headed by Berlin native Nico Schack who wants to spread the health benefits of the plant. He says, “I thought it was a good way to show people something new through food and drinks, since it’s easier when trying something new to explore it this way. CBD and CBD coffee was a big trend in America already so I thought the Berliner should get the experience as well.” Many menu items at Cafe Canna have either hemp or CBD, or CBD oil can also be added to anything. The cafe’s açai bowls are topped with hemp seeds and there are also homemade raw “Happy Balls” that contain CBD. Coffee drinks are made with CBD-infused beans shipped from the Netherlands and all other drinks can also be made with CBD oil. There’s also hemp beer and soda available alongside CBD oils of various percentages that can also be purchased.
While the food or drinks aren’t meant to make you high, there may be a mild, calming effect which is what Schack is aiming for. Most patrons who come in without much knowledge of the plant are looking for the pain-relieving or calming properties. It’s the right place to learn about CBD and try it before committing to a big purchase.
Cafe Canna is located at Lychener Str. 4, 10437 Berlin. Visit their official website and follow them on Facebook and Instagram.

(http://www.MaritimeCyprus.com) Until the “Titanic” sank in 1912, the tragedy of the Hapag steamship “Cimbria” was regarded as the largest civilian maritime disaster of all time. To this day, the catastrophe remains the biggest civilian maritime drama in German waters. The collision made headlines across the world. The story of the iron screw steamship that sank off the North Sea island of Borkum began 150 years ago. The “Cimbria,” launched on January 21, 1867, set sail from Hamburg on April 13 for its maiden voyage to New York. Sixteen years later, on January 19, 1883, came the tragic accident.
The Cimbria was a 330-foot, 3,000-ton steamship built in 1867 and operated by the Hamburg-Amerika Line. It left Hamburg, Germany, on January 18 with 302 passengers and 120 crew members. Among the passengers were eastern Europeans heading to America, French sailors on their way to Le Havre and a touring group of Native Americans who were exhibiting Wild West paraphernalia.
The Sultan, a smaller Hull and Hamburg Line steamer traveling with only a crew, was also moving through the North Sea on January 19. Although there was heavy fog early that morning, neither boat took any precautionary measures, like reducing their speed, and the Sultan smashed straight into the Cimbria on the port side.
Both steamers were badly damaged and the Cimbria‘s lifeboats were launched. Seven were inflated, but in the confusion, they weren’t filled anywhere near capacity. In addition, three lifeboats quickly disappeared in the heavy fog and were never seen again. For those people who did not make it onto a lifeboat, the cold water was deadly. Hypothermia and drowning claimed hundreds of lives within minutes.
A few nearby ships picked up a couple of lifeboats soon after but the bulk of the 65 survivors from the Cimbria were not picked up until two days later. The captain of the Sultan, which had managed to stay afloat, was widely criticized for his failure to provide any assistance to the passengers and crew of the Cimbria. In total, 357 people lost their lives.
In 1974, the wreckage of the “Cimbria” was discovered in 25 meters of water 19 nautical miles northwest of the island of Borkum. The survey ship “Wega” started examining the wreckage that same year. Among the many things to be salvaged was the ship’s bell. It can be found these days in the entrance hall of the Ballin House in Hamburg, where it stands as a memorial to all those who have perished at sea.
What’s more, between 2001 and 2008, divers have brought up numerous pieces of equipment and cargo goods from the wreckage, including porcelain, wine bottles and ivory. Today, the wreckage stretches over an area 115 meters long, though the ship’s structure can no longer be made out. In just a few years, the already heavily decayed wreckage of the “Cimbria” will disintegrate completely and disappear.
