I got so excited for my birthday trip I finished all of my research about the area 2 days after I made my yurt reservation. If I can fit in (and afford) every activity i want to do within 3 days, I'm going to:

Washburne State Park to Reedsport, OR

January 25th

We’ve been getting pretty good at being packed and ready to hit the road at (or just after) sun-up but after our first night of camping we’ll need to get a little bit better of a system to get going — you just need the sun to already be rising to pack up the tent and all the gear. And we can’t pass up a conversation with other campers as we started on our way out — so we set out about an hour after sunrise, not too bad.

Yesterday’s ride was probably the most beautiful yet, but with the sun still out, today’s ride was pretty great too. We finished the last coastal segment of the Siuslaw National Forest with a climb along rocky cliff side coves. The ride takes us within reach of the Heceta Head Lighthouse which we didn’t visit (started the ride late) but about a mile later along the road as we pulled out on a viewing point back at the lighthouse we heard barking sea lions far down the cliff side below. The source was hard to spot at first but there were hundreds of them perched on the rocks, swimming in the cove, and even riding the waves. Totally amazing.

On our way out of the National Forest the landscape has its first major change of the day as rocky coastline turned into sandy dunes and wide beaches. The view was impressive of rows of breaking waves going miles out into the ocean. This is definitely the benefit of cycling the coast, being able to pull out into each and every turnout along the mountain road to take in the views.

The route moved inland for a far too long stretch through the sprawl of the city of Florence where we really only left with sunburnt faces for biking into the sun for an hour, but thankfully diverted back to the dunes after none other than Dunes City (mostly out of season ATV and “sandboard” rental shops) after which we took in an elevated view of the dunes and sandy trailheads from a National Forest day use area.

Our last, and largest, climb of the day lead us back into logging forests and rewarded us with an amazing view of the Umpqua River valley. The views have been unreal, just foggy and hazy enough to look like a painting.

We’ve really lucked out with the weather the last few days through Oregon’s central coast. We took in the sunset along the river ride to our destination for the evening, the town of Reedsport.

OCT Days 8 - 11

Day 8 Started the day with some road walking to get to the Cape Lookout South Trail, which descends through a Sitka spruce forest to the beach. Berries were the fanciest food to me growing up so I couldn’t believe it when I visited the PNW for the first time and they were all over the place. It always feels like someone is going to yell at me when I eat them. The best things in life are free.

We’ve also been trying to identify mushrooms… I was hoping that since Oregon legalized psilocybin we’d be able to like, buy it somewhere, but no. I made eyes with some regular mushroom salesman at the Portland Farmers Market but no dice. Reddit suggested finding a weed dealer and then working your way up to a shrooms dealer but who has time for that.. Apparently there’s a special kind of shroom that grows out of driftwood on the north Oregon coast and people get busted harvesting it all the time. Some advice I got from the internet: cops can’t legally search camera bags? Good thing I own a camera now.

Should we eat? We both have health insurance as of Aug 1.

On our way down Cape Lookout a man sitting on a giant tree stump asked us if we’d heard the good news. Have YOU heard the good news btw? The good news that Jesus Christ our lord and savior died so that we may be cleansed of our sins and have everlasting life with him in heaven? Luckily both Zoey and I had heard this news so we were able to save a little time. The man seemed murderous and his eyes were glowing with the Holy Spirit so I didn’t think it wise to tell him that I threw my childhood bibles and baptismal certificate in the recycling at my moms house a few weeks ago. He’s #2 on the list of people to investigate if we disappear.

We had lunch at the beach and walked the rest of the way to Sandbeach camp, which is basically a giant ATV staging area behind a bunch of dunes. Most families there had more vehicles than people so Zoey and I looked like freaks on foot. Z invented my new favorite backpacking food, Chipotle knockoff guacamole, with the secret ingredient: TRUE LIME!! Avocado + true lime + olive oil + salt = shockingly good guac. Eat it on a tortilla like a little guac taco, a guaco. No ATV riding allowed in camp between 12 am and 6 am, so yes we slept excellently. Highly recommend campsite 9, it’s right where all the main roads converge 👍🏻

Day 9 We considered crossing a river near camp so we could skip 6 miles of road walking today, but the tide timing was bad and when I tested it out last night I could only get 5% of the way before the water was up to my knees. I wanted to try putting our bags in trash bags and carrying them on our heads or soliciting a kayak fisherman to ferry us across, but highway walking won out. Finally back on the beach and we climbed over Cape Kiwanda, a giant dune separating us from camp and beer in Pacific City. While waiting for a table at Pelican Brewing, we watched through Zoey’s binoculars as adults and children alike tried to scale the dune with varying degrees of success. One kid gave up halfway and decided to bury himself up to his head instead, relatable.

Our camp tonight is my least favorite so far, a weird dead patch of grass in the middle of town populated by 65 bunnies whose ancestors were dropped off on the site 30 years ago (according to the camp host, who reminded me of Laird from Girls). Cold, went to bed early.

Day 10 Giant fluffy bagels and coffee in town this morning, plus resupply. Every single establishment in this state seems to be desperately understaffed - hiring posters and signs about supply shortages are up all over the place. I’m sorry to drag Ayn Rand into this again but it’s all very Atlas Shrugged.

Somewhat complicated bus scheduling to swing a longer hike over Cascade Head, but it worked out. On our way down the foggy mountain, some accidental + authentic trail magic…hot tea and snickers bars with a couple from upstate New York living out of their truck for the summer. The girl is finishing a degree in “expeditionary studies” at SUNY Plattsburgh, and it sounds like they literally climb, paddle, and ski five days a week and graduate with a bunch of guide qualifications. You can get FAFSA for that shit?? She came to Oregon to do the OCT for her capstone project and seemed really excited to meet persons who could validate its existence. She and her friend went north on the trail (not recommended cuz of strong winds from that direction) and bailed after two weeks because water and legal camping spots were few and far between. She seemed kinda salty about the logistical challenges and said she might try again in 10 years. Would love to read her capstone report.

Got to the highway where the bus was supposed to pick us up an hour early. It doesn’t usually stop there but Zoey called the depot before our hike to make ~special~ arrangements. Cooked fried rice in the jetboil squatting by the side of the road while we waited. Was hoping somebody would offer us a ride into town but no luck. I fucked up and burned AND undercooked the rice and we didn’t have enough soy sauce, oh well. Noticed the dehydrated vegetables we bought on Amazon have a weird smell and now I can’t unsmell it. Took two buses to our campsite, lights out.

Day 11 Cheat day…decided to take a bus instead of walking on the highway for miles. Hiked the beach into the town of Otis, where we had a truly devastating breakfast at the Otis Cafe. Chicken fried steak for me as always and some kind of vegetable omelette for Zoey, plus molasses bread and cheesy potatoes. I think I need to take a break from CFS or order like the kids chicken fried steak or something because it’s just getting to be too much. Is it a coincidence that chronic fatigue syndrome and chicken fried steak share an acronym? No, it’s fucking not.

Until recently I thought I was missing that gene that made you want to stop eating, like a beagle. My mom said I used to breastfeed until I threw up and she thought that was normal until she had my sister. For this reason I’m planning to approach my first baby with suspicion and not get played like an absolute fool - generational strides. But anyway since I turned 25 my telomeres or whatever must be getting short real quick and my stomach is shrinking (but just internally, my belly fat is permanent) and I can’t believe I’m saying this but I want to eat healthy food. I’m really missing my daily smoothies. I haven’t had hot Cheetos since I left Berkeley, only partially because of the Frito-Lay boycott. I’m eating a banana a day and I hate bananas in their natural state. I’m reformed.

We laid down on the beach for a few hours and eventually took the bus to a weird Hipcamp site on an eroding cliff. It was really our only option but $70 for a picnic table, a portapotty, and a hose is pretty steep. Zoey hates getting ripped off and I could tell she was annoyed. Rainy night and I ate too much weed gummy to do anything but stare at the tent wall. At least I haven’t been sleep talking, or Zoey is lying about it.

I love traveling internationally and would do it every year if I could, but I also enjoy traveling in the United States just as much! Not only does this usually save money, but each state offers its own unique culture and scenery! The varying cultures from state to state can be so drastic which is exciting for someone like me who loves to learn about different cultures. There are of course the popular spots to travel in the United States like New York City, Florida, Texas, and Chicago, as much fun as these places are I encourage people to find places that are a little less well known. I have been to 38 states so far and am hoping to visit the rest within the next couple of years. Traveling in the United States can be relatively inexpensive if you plan ahead and use the right resources to save money. Keep reading to learn about three of my favorite places to visit in the United States and some additional resources so you can visit them as well!

Montana

One of my favorite places to visit in the United States is Montana. Most people just think of Montana as a state with not much to do besides hiking. While hiking is a huge part of Montana, there is a ton of other things to do as well! Half of my family lives out in Montana so I have been visiting there my entire life. I have grown to appreciate the state and all it has to offer. I love Colorado but Montana has just as good scenery and mountains and with way fewer people. My favorite town in Montana is Bozeman which is located in the middle of Southern Montana right off of I-90. The population is about 45,600 which isn’t huge but it still has a bigger city vibe to it. Bozeman has 42 parks and 52 miles of trails just within the city limits alone.

There are numerous places to hike or bike in near Bozeman. Drinking Horse Mountain is a newer hiking venue with two trails (one easier and the other harder) that both lead to the 5,522 summit. At the top, you’ll have amazing views of the Absaroka and Gallatin ranges. Click here to read about some other great hiking spots in the Bozeman area! In the winter, check out Bridger Bowl or Big Sky Resort for some downhill skiing and snowboarding. Both of these places are great and have some amazing ski trails and views. Big Sky is a little more popular but is also more crowded and expensive. I personally enjoy Bridger Bowl since it is less crowded, which allows you more time on the mountain and less time waiting to get up the mountain. Big Sky does offer summer activities like golfing, mountain biking, and zip line tours.

Glacier National Park is located in the Rocky Mountains in the northwestern part of Montana. This park has some of the most amazing views in the United States and should be added to an avid hiker’s list. The park has over 700 miles of trails all ranging in difficulty so everyone will find the right trail for them. Glacier has multiple lakes for swimming, boating, and fishing as well. I would highly recommend checking out this park! Montana of course also is home to part of Yellowstone. Yellowstone is a great trip that everyone should try to do at least once. Yellowstone has fantastic hiking trails and areas to boat and fish. If hiking really isn’t your thing then it is just as fun to drive around the park and view the scenery and animals. You can either go camping or stay in a lodge in the park.

Outer Banks, North Carolina

Another favorite state of mine is North Carolina and more specifically the Outer Banks. The Out Banks is a group of barrier islands right off the mainland of North Carolina. If a relaxing vacation is more of your thing then this is the spot for you. I personally think that the Outer Banks is a better vacation spot than popular spots like Florida or New Jersey. The beaches are cleaner and less crowded. The island also offers golf courses and cute coastal shops. Many people ride ATV’s in the sand dunes to go sightseeing and view the wild horses that can be found farther down the island. If you are still looking to get some activity in during this trip, the Outer Banks has three Coastal Maritime forests that are perfect for hiking and sightseeing. The Outer Banks is also home to the Jockey’s Ridge State Park, which is a 426-acre park that features the largest living sand dune on the East Coast. I love the Outer Banks and am looking forward to planning a future trip there!

San Diego, California

One last place in the United States that I love is San Diego. This is obviously a well-known place to visit but I feel that it is worth mentioning. My family and I went there on my brother’s Make-A-Wish and it was one of the best trips I have been on. Just like the Outer Banks, San Diego has some of the best beaches I have been to in the United States. It surprisingly was never that busy at the beaches and the beaches were kept relatively clean. The San Diego Zoo was the highlight of the trip. The zoo is so large that most people opt to take a bus tour. This was a great way to see the entire zoo in just one day. It made stops at the large attractions which allowed people the opportunity to hop off and actually explore the exhibit. There are multiple different communities in San Diego each with a completely different feel from one another; it is really fun to shop and explore each community. I have not personally been here, but the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park is a large feature of the area. This park is the largest state park in California with 600,000 acres. Visitors can hike the 110 miles of trails or explore the 12 wilderness areas.

Amtrak

One thing about traveling the United States is that flying can often time be very expensive. This often causes people to shorten their trip or not even consider flying somewhere. I have just recently started looking into the Amtrak for my future trips in the United States. This summer I was hoping to go back to Montana with a friend but the airfare was too expensive for me. So I instead looked into taking a train ride out west instead. The Amtrak offers vacation deals and is relatively inexpensive if you plan it the right way. For my trip, I will either take the train from Chicago all the way to San Diego or I will take the train from Chicago to Seattle. Both of these trips take about 2 ½ days and is about $250 round-trip.

This is a great way to see a large part of the country for a pretty cheap price. The Chicago to San Diego train makes stops in Iowa, Nebraska, Colorado, Utah, Nevada, and ends in California. The other option travels from Chicago to Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Dakota, Montana, Idaho, Washington, and ends in Oregon. The Amtrak also offers great trips out east or down south all starting in Chicago. If you are looking for a fun road-trip vacation without having to worry about gas or driving long hours, I would highly recommend looking into taking the Amtrak! Not only is it cheap, but you are able to see large parts of the country in just a short couple of days.

I love traveling in the United States just as much as I do internationally! Apparently this is a thing in Oregon.  Get an ATV (or your pickup truck), and drive it over the huge sandy bits of the state out by the ocean.  I was just looking for another beach access, but stumbled across my first of these recreational vehicle parks.  So weird.

With sweeping sand dunes, coastal forests and ocean beaches, there’s just nothing quite like a hike in the beautiful Oregon Dunes.

The Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area stretches for 40 miles along the central Oregon coast south of Florence, made up of ever-shifting sand dunes that are partially held in place by invasive dune grass and islands of trees and dense brush.

Exploring the dunes is like nothing else in Oregon, resembling a scene from the Sahara Desert or an alien world.

Most recreation areas in the dunes are designated for those using off-highway vehicles – like dune buggies, ATVs and dirt bikes – and aren’t safe for hikers. Those exploring the dunes by foot should instead head to the hiker-only areas.
