IDK if it's just that I'm a desert rat but like. I can't just walk out into the woods. honestly i can't even walk into a field because i don't want lyme disease. I'm okay with trails but all those books as a child would talk about raw dogging the forest in shorts!! There Are Spiders In There no thank you. Have i gone into the desert, stepped on a cactus, got stung by a bee in my toe, got thrown off my atv and went flying, got stuck in sand dunes multiple times? Yes absolutely. Did my grandpa break his ribs doing the exact same atv desert shit? Yes absolutely. Did my grandpa tear up his foot by running it over with his own truck 15 miles deep into the desert on an abandoned gravel road with temps in the hundreds and no water? Yeah completely. But could we step off the trail in an Oregon National Park? No of course not there might be a 3 centimeter long tick; that's terrifying.

Oregon Dunes
The western Sahara Desert has an average high temperatures of 120°F, annual rainfall of 4 inches, and sand dunes. Death Valley, California, has an average temperatures of 120°F, annual rainfall of 1.7 inches, and sand dunes. Florence, near the Oregon coast, has an average high temperature of 75°F, annual rainfall of more than 156 inches, and . . . sand dunes. Lots of sand dunes.
The Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area extends from Florence to Coos Bay, nearly forty miles along the Oregon coast. These constitute the longest stretch of coastal dunes in the United States. They prove that it is not temperature and rainfall that makes sand dunes; it is wind, sand, and time.
About six thousand years ago, the present Oregon coastline stabilized, more or less, as did most of the weather patterns we see today. For thousands of years winds blew sands from the beaches upward, five hundred feet above sea level, to rest on a sandstone rock formation, where the sand began to pile up. Once there, it was contained by the mountains east of and above the sandstone bedrock. Unlike many other sand dune formations, where the winds have been steady and generally from one direction, the Oregon dunes are as ever changing as the winds.
The summer winds along that portion of the coast are from the north and average 12-16 miles per hour in summer. The winter winds come from the south, with varying force, though they can reach 100 miles per hour during storms. The winds reshape the dunes from season to season. In addition to wind action, the heavy rainfall along the coast affects the dunes in many ways. There are several lakes within the dunes; some of them silt up, and others form when rainwater fills depressions in the dunes. In some places, there are marshes and quicksand.
That changing landscape is part of the reason why some people visit the dunes. The many tour companies lining the Coast Highway give guided tours of the dunes and rent various kinds of ATVs to tourists. Yet, every year, just as sure as the tourists come to see the dunes, the tour companies and the government save many tourists and their equipment from quicksand and other natural obstacles.

There are these sand dune in Oregon
pretty sure this is a pic of them? IDK but my family went there when I was just beginning to understand what a homosexual was and I swear to you, there was absolutely no one around my family, but we were watching these idiots hurt themselves on quad bikes or ATVs or something, and this guy in motocross gear shoulder checked me at some point? anyways I got hard because hot guy in leather, and then realised I was gay, and my literal first reaction was "OMG how do they all know Im gay?" Like I hadn't just figured it out and for some reason I thought everyone was suspicious, like I was a catholic youth pastor who went to rock concerts.
Anyways, turns out Im TANS not gay, so I was wrong in more than 2 ways that day.
Gay pride!

I got so excited for my birthday trip I finished all of my research about the area 2 days after I made my yurt reservation. If I can fit in (and afford) every activity i want to do within 3 days, I'm going to:
* Take a tour of the Oregon Dunes, driving a dune buggy!? (If I can't afford that, I'm going to rent an ATV for a self-guided exploration of the dunes instead.)
* Go kayaking on a river that has no currents
* Visit a nature center for birds of prey
* View sea lions at a wildlife reservation
* View a fen of cobra lily pitcher plants
* Look for agate, jasper, quartz, and carnelian along the river bank
* (Hopefully) whalewatch on the beach
* Go swimming, which I haven't done in years

White Sands and Blue Skies
Connor and I have become dune experts. it’s not a thing we set out to do, and I can’t precisely name a time we made a conscious decision to incorporate the gritty, undulating moonscapes into most every vacation we’ve planned and taken.
no matter, we’ve explored beige dunes by foot, rode overpowered, multi-person buggies over the sheer edged bowls of an Oregon ATV park while six of our new, and closest, East Indian friends egged a testosterone laden driver to work harder to give their elderly family member a centrifugally induced stroke.
one especially beautiful Utah evening found us enjoying a glorious sunset over the Pink Coral Sand Dunes of Kanab... blissfully unaware hundreds of suicide deer awaited our dusk lit drive back to the lodge.
no accident then that we squarely pushed a pin in the map at White Sands National Monument, conveniently en-route to the final El Paso destination.
from a distance the fuzzy white penumbra, and forecast for wind, indicated this particular dune experience could be a lens thrasher... both photographic and organic. total non issue - the vague white cloud always seemed to stay in the distance, and a majority of blowing sand never reached above ankle height.
even the weather was uncharacteristically accommodating, down in the seventies if memory serves. nonetheless I slathered myself in 50 proof sunscreen. ain’t no solar energy like a New Mexico sun. combine that with God’s own 275 square mile reflector and Rich is an ant under the proverbial microscope... Connor of a young and absorbent construct went au natural, only slightly reddening his neck and intensifying the farmer’s tan.

Washburne State Park to Reedsport, OR
January 25th
We’ve been getting pretty good at being packed and ready to hit the road at (or just after) sun-up but after our first night of camping we’ll need to get a little bit better of a system to get going — you just need the sun to already be rising to pack up the tent and all the gear. And we can’t pass up a conversation with other campers as we started on our way out — so we set out about an hour after sunrise, not too bad.
Yesterday’s ride was probably the most beautiful yet, but with the sun still out, today’s ride was pretty great too. We finished the last coastal segment of the Siuslaw National Forest with a climb along rocky cliff side coves. The ride takes us within reach of the Heceta Head Lighthouse which we didn’t visit (started the ride late) but about a mile later along the road as we pulled out on a viewing point back at the lighthouse we heard barking sea lions far down the cliff side below. The source was hard to spot at first but there were hundreds of them perched on the rocks, swimming in the cove, and even riding the waves. Totally amazing.
On our way out of the National Forest the landscape has its first major change of the day as rocky coastline turned into sandy dunes and wide beaches. The view was impressive of rows of breaking waves going miles out into the ocean. This is definitely the benefit of cycling the coast, being able to pull out into each and every turnout along the mountain road to take in the views.
The route moved inland for a far too long stretch through the sprawl of the city of Florence where we really only left with sunburnt faces for biking into the sun for an hour, but thankfully diverted back to the dunes after none other than Dunes City (mostly out of season ATV and “sandboard” rental shops) after which we took in an elevated view of the dunes and sandy trailheads from a National Forest day use area.
Our last, and largest, climb of the day lead us back into logging forests and rewarded us with an amazing view of the Umpqua River valley. The views have been unreal, just foggy and hazy enough to look like a painting.
We’ve really lucked out with the weather the last few days through Oregon’s central coast. We took in the sunset along the river ride to our destination for the evening, the town of Reedsport.

Beverly Beach State Park is close to Lincoln City and looks like a wonderful Oregon coast campground. During our final trip to Coos Bay, we spent a lot of time at this part of the coast. Half Moon Bay Campground is a favourite for these ATV riders trying to discover the Oregon Sand Dunes.
The proximity to the ocean is difficult to beat and the calming sound of the ocean lulling campers to sleep is all however assured at this epic Oregon Coast campground. Typically September via mid October has the best weather of the entire 12 months on the Oregon Coast.

Just rode the 20 miles from Florence to Reedsport through Oregon Dunes country. It's not my favorite stretch of US 101 riding, as the route stays inland. Plus this area caters to the RV and ATV crowd. Still, there are moments of beauty. #shawnandemeeorcoasttouraug2018 #biketour #biketouring (at Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area)
