"PENCIL GIVES CLUE IN APARTMENT THEFT," Toronto Star. January 4, 1934. Page 3. --- Harry G. Chant Convicted of Stealing $70 From Girl's Trunk ---- Alleging that she had been robbed of $70 in bills which were taken from her trunk, Ethel Brown, a maid in a St. Leonard's Ave. flat, appeared as a witness against Harry G. Chant, 45, occupant of an upper flat in the same house.
Mrs. Brown swore that she left $173 in her trunk, which had no lock, and that when she looked for it only $103 remained.
A pencil, which accused admitted was his, was found in a tray of the trunk, complainant testified, and she swore that prior to the theft she had never seen the pencil.
It was brought out in evidence that Chant offered to repay the $70, but he explained this as a desire to preserve the goodwill in the house.
"A very suspicious move," commented Mr. Malone. "It certainly puts you in an unfavorable light."
Registering a conviction, Magistrate Jones remanded accused until Jan. 12 for sentence and advised a medical examination in the meantime.
One prisoner was sentenced to the repeaters' penalty of $50 or one month in early court to-day and two were assessed $10 or ten days. Joseph Riordan was the unlucky one, he having been convicted only last November for the same offence.
"He doesn't seem to change," commented his worship, when Edward Halchead pleaded guilty to drunkenness, and admitted that he was given a chance several months ago.
Stanley Treyzoloski was a little dubious when asked if he had been up before, but the bench was not.
"Oh, yes," he said, "$10 or ten days."
William Patterson, youthful vagrant from Winnipeg, who it was stated was given an opportunity to return to his home but failed to take it, will serve the next 30 days in jail unless he produces $10.
"He is living in 'flop-houses' and had 60 cents in his pockets when arrested," an officer testified.
George Graham was anxious for a sentence.
"I'm asking for week to-day." he told the court, and the bench obliged. "Ten dollars or ten days" was the verdict. John Gillespie, also accused of vagrancy, was assessed $10 or 30 days.
Hit-Run Driver Fined "This young man stole a bicycle from Queen St. and rode it out to his uncle's place in North Toronto," Detective Robert Semple testified when Wilfred Cronkwright appeared on a theft charge.
"There are too many bicycle thefts, and it is a good time at the start of the year to hand out a warning." observed Crown Attorney Malone.
His worship decided the youth had been warned and granted a remand for sentence.
Accused of criminal negligence following an accident in which his car struck Jacob Kleinman at the corner of Spadina and College Sts., Charles Jackson to-day pleaded guilty.
Detective O'Driscoll testified that Jackson's car struck the injured man as he moved across the road while the lights changed.
Jackson failed to stop, and in a statement attributed this to "nervousness."
"The serious side of it is the hit-and-run driving." Mr. Malone stated, and his worship added, "I can have no sympathy with hit-and-run drivers."
Fifty dollars or one month on the neglect to return charge, and one month on the criminal negligence charge which will be dated back to the time of the arrest one month ago, was the penalty imposed, in addition to cancellation of the driver's permit for six months.
Sheldon Young, found guilty of attempted wounding, was placed on probation for one month, after the bench had learned that he had been in jail for 19 days.
Young was convicted of attacking 17-year-old Lloyd Bradley, a young friend, when the youth declined to accompany him to a theatre.
"The doctors seem to think that if you leave liquor alone you would not have these crazy spells," Magistrate Jones said, addressing the prisoner.
Tossed Bottles For tossing bottles in a brawl on Christmas Eve and thereby injured Basil Ebinoff, James Cairns will pay $50 or serve 30 days.
"Christmas Eve is not the time to get drunk." said Magistrate Jones.
"You can't throw bottles around and injure people," Cairns claimed that he was attempting to leave complainant's premises "where they were fighting" and said his beverage had been several bottles of pop.
Rivalry between independent taxi drivers soliciting fares near the Union station flared into open warfare on December 23rd, it was brought out in court to-day when Thomas Carter was charged with doing malicious damage to an auto owned by Harry Hoffman.
Crowding for positions in line was responsible for the quarrel and complainant accused Carter of deliberately ramming his taxi. Magistrate Jones ruled a conviction would be registered and remanded Carter for sentence with a warning.
Took Turns at Being Sick Frank Bartolar, John Parigan, John Sciabar and Rudolph Brogobich, all officials of the Toronto branch of the Grand Carnolian and Slovenian Catholic Union, pleaded guilty to a breach of the Iusurance Act, by receiving premiums from members of the fraternity, in return for the privilege of sick benefits, an arrangement which Crown Attorney [W. O. Gibson pointed out is strictly forbidden by the act.
John Grudeff, defence counsel, in explaining the procedure, stated that the officials were not knowingly breaking the law, and that in any event the system was to be discontinued.
"This is a very respectable and well-known society in the United States," he said. "Due to the fact that some of the members took turns at 'being sick and drawing the $2 per day sick benefits, the organization does not wish to carry on this business in Canada any longer."
With the consent of the crown, his worship assessed Brogobich a $50 fine and remanded the three members of the group for sentence.

The Tougaloo Nine were students at Tougaloo College, staged sit-ins at the all-white Jackson Main Library. Before the sit-ins, African Americans were prohibited from using the library. Meredith Coleman Anding Jr., James Cleo Bradford, Alfred Lee Cook, Geraldine Edwards, Janice Jackson, Joseph Jackson Jr., Albert Earl Lassiter, Evelyn Pierce, and Ethel Sawyer were members of the Jackson Youth Council of the NAACP. Medgar Evers trained them for the sit-in protest.
On March 27, 1961, they entered the Library. The women wore dresses and the men wore shirts and ties. The Nine visited the George Washington Branch (Colored) to request books they knew would not be in that facility. They went to the Main Library where they attempted to stage a “read-in.” They sat at different tables reading library books quietly. The Librarian called the Jackson police. They were arrested, charged with breach of the peace, and jailed.
Students from Jackson State College organized a prayer vigil in support. Hundreds of people attended the vigil which was broken up by Jackson State College President Jacob Reddix, who was backed by city police. Joyce and Dorie Ladner and student body President Walter Williams, who organized the prayer vigil—were expelled from Jackson State College.
Jackson State students boycotted classes in protest, held another rally, and marched to the Jackson City Jail. They were joined by townspeople and Medgar Evers. Police used tear gas and dogs against the protesters which included women and children. An 81-year-old man suffered a broken arm from an attack by a police officer. Supporters raised bail. They were represented by local civil rights attorney Jack Harvey Young Sr.
They went to trial and were found guilty. They were sentenced to 30 days in jail and fined $100. The judge suspended the sentences on the condition that there would be no further demonstrations.
The NAACP filed a class action lawsuit against the Library. District Court Judge William Harold Cox ordered the Library to desegregate. This was one of the first victories in the civil rights campaign in Mississippi. They were honored with a freedom trail marker. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence

"LOST": Things That Make Me Go . . . Hmmm?
The following is a list of questions I have regarding subplots that have been featured in past episodes of "LOST". If you have an answer to any of my questions, please feel free to reply:
"LOST": THINGS THAT MAKE ME GO . . . HMMM?
1. Who gave the original order for Walt Lloyd to be kidnapped? Was it the leader of the Others, Ben Linus or was it the island’s protector, Jacob?
2. Why did the Others kidnap some of the surviving Tail Section passengers of Oceanic 815?
3. Why did Ben Linus and the Others keep Jack Shephard, Kate Austen, and James “Sawyer” Ford as prisoners on Hydra Island for a period of time, when it would have been easier for Ben to offer passage off the island in exchange for Jack’s medical skills?
4. Why did Michael Dawson confess his murder of Ana-Lucia Cortez and accidental killing of Libby to his ten year-old son, Walt Lloyd, following their departure from the island? It seemed a very implausible thing for any parent to do.
5. Why did Tom Friendly claim that only some people were able to leave the island?
6. Why did the prosecuting attorney for Kate’s murder trial blindly believe Jack’s false testimony that Kate had given birth to Aaron Littleton, during their three-month stay on the island? Why did most people blindly believe this lie?
7. Why wasn’t prosecuted Kate for other charges that included the New Mexico bank robbery and the assault of U.S. Marshal Edward Mars, after the charge against her for the murder of Wayne Jensen was dropped?
8. Why were the remaining Oceanic 815 survivors, the Kahuna survivors and former Other Juliet Burke the only ones on the island who had time traveled, and not the Others or missing Oceanic 815 survivor Claire Littleton?
9. Why did Ben prevent John Locke from committing suicide, and later kill him in “The Death of Jeremy Bentham”?
10. Who killed most of the surviving Ajira 316 passengers at their beach camp and why?

The Golden Boy, John Garfield By Susan King
Stanley Kowalski in Tennessee Williams’ A Streetcar Named Desire was Marlon Brando’s signature role. It made the then 23-year-old Brando an overnight Broadway sensation in 1947, and he electrified movie audiences and earned his first Oscar nomination for the classic 1951 film version. But he wasn’t the first choice to play Blanche’s earthy brother-in-law. Producer Irene Selznick had her eyes on Hollywood star John Garfield, who frequently took time out from movies to return to the Great White Way for limited runs.
In fact, writer John Lahr reported in 2014 that on July 19, 1947, Selznick drew up a contract for the 34-year-old actor, “one of the few sexy Hollywood stars with a proletarian pedigree. The Selznick office leaked the big news to the press. The contract was never signed. On August 18 the deal with Garfield collapsed.”
One of the reasons bandied about was that Garfield turned down the role because the contract would have kept him away from Hollywood for too long. Though Brando is considered the performer who ushered in the more naturalistic style of acting (known as “the Method”) both on stage and in film, truth be told it was Garfield who was the catalyst for Brando, as well as Montgomery Clift, Paul Newman, James Dean and Steve McQueen.
Just look at Garfield’s first feature film, FOUR DAUGHTERS (’38). Directed by Michael Curtiz, the cast includes Lane sisters Lola, Rosemary and Priscilla, in addition to Gale Page as the four musically inclined daughters of a widower music professor (Claude Rains). Enter handsome boy-next-door Jeffrey Lynn as a budding composer named Felix who endears himself with all the daughters, especially peppy Ann (Priscilla Lane).
The household is put in an uproar with the arrival of Garfield’s Mickey Borden, the original rebel anti-hero. Unkempt, slovenly and possessing a massive chip on his shoulder, Mickey is an orchestrator who has arrived at the house to work with Felix. You can’t keep your eyes off him especially in this early monologue where he explains his anger to Ann:
“They’ve been at me now nearly a quarter of a century. No let-up. First, they said, ‘Let him do without parents. He’ll get along.’ Then they decided, ‘He doesn’t need education. That’s for sissies.’ Then right at the beginning, they tossed a coin, ‘Heads he’s poor, tail’s he’s rich.’ So, they tossed a coin…with two heads. Then for the finale, they got together on talent. ‘Sure, they said, let him have talent. Not enough to let him do anything on this own, anything good or great Just enough to let him help people. It’s all he deserves.’”
There was a sexuality and eroticism to Garfield’s performance that was 180 degrees different from Lynn’s durable and safe leading man. He was so natural; it was almost like someone found Garfield walking down the street in the Bronx and asked him to star in the movie. “He was the prototypical Depression rebellion youth,” actor Norman Lloyd told me about Garfield for the L.A. Times in 2003. They first met in 1937 and worked together on Garfield’s final film HE RAN ALL THE WAY (’51).
“He combined all of these elements of darkness and rebelliousness with the charm and the poignancy and he became the prototypical actor of that time. He never changed as a person. He remained just as a wonderful guy. He was a man of great charm, a good fellow, very likable.”
There was a lot of Mickey in Garfield, who was born Jacob Julius Garfinkle in 1913 on the Lower East Side of New York to poor Russian immigrants. Julie, as he was called, had a rough and tumble upbringing. His mother died when he was seven. “He hated his father,” his daughter Julie Garfield noted in 2003. “His father was awful to him. He was torn away from his brother.” In fact, Garfield once said that if he hadn’t become an actor, he would have been “Public Enemy No. 1.”
Unlike Mickey, the fates and destiny were looking after him. First, it was educator Angelo Patri, who became a surrogate dad to Julie at P.S. 45, a high school for troubled students. With Patri’s encouragement, he joined the debate team where he discovered he had a gift for acting. That was further nurtured when he received a scholarship to Maria Ouspenskaya’s acting school. He was all of 18 when he made his Broadway debut in 1932 in Lost Boy and became the youngest member of the progressive and influential Group Theatre, appearing in Clifford Odets’ early masterpieces Waiting for Lefty and Awake and Sing.
Odets wrote the play Golden Boy for Garfield in 1937, but director Harold Clurman decided to give the lead role of boxer Joe Bonaparte to Luther Adler and cast Garfield in a minor role. His unhappiness with Clurman’s decision pushed Garfield into signing a contract with Warner Bros. And FOUR DAUGHTERS made him an overnight sensation. He earned a Supporting Actor Oscar nomination, but lost to Walter Brennan who picked up his second Academy Award in that category for Kentucky (‘38).
The following year, Garfield, Rains, the Lane siblings, Page and Curtiz reunited for DAUGHTERS COURAGEOUS, in which the actors played different characters from the prior film. It was probably the best film Garfield made that year. But Warner Brothers put him in a lot of movies that were unworthy of his talent including BLACKWELL’S ISLAND (’39) where he was typecast as a gangster. He made some good movies in 1941, including THE SEA WOLF, which also starred Edward G. Robinson and Ida Lupino and reunited him with Curtiz, and also Anatole Litvak’s atmospheric noir OUT OF THE FOG also with Lupino.
Because he suffered heart damage from scarlet fever, Garfield couldn’t serve during World War II. But he entertained the troops on USO tours and opened the famous Hollywood Canteen with Bette Davis so the troops could be entertained and be served by some of Hollywood’s biggest stars. Both Davis and Garfield appeared as themselves in the hit 1944 film HOLLYWOOD CANTEEN. Garfield also fought the global conflict on screen, giving one of his strongest and grittiest performances in PRIDE OF THE MARINES (’45), a poignant drama based on the life Al Schmid who was blinded by a grenade during the Battle of Guadalcanal. He returns home to his wife (Eleanor Powell) a bitter, doubting man who has a difficult time trying to deal with his new life.
The year 1946 saw the release of two of Garfield’s most enjoyable films HUMORESQUE and THE POSTMAN ALWAYS RINGS TWICE. HUMORESQUE was his last film under his Warner Bros. contract. It’s a delicious melodramatic wallow with Garfield playing a poor New York kid who becomes a famous concert violinist. Joan Crawford, coming off her Oscar-winning triumph in Mildred Pierce (’45), plays a wealthy patroness who sets her sights on Garfield. Garfield went to MGM for POSTMAN, which was based on James M. Cain’s best-selling thriller. Garfield turns up the heat with Lana Turner as illicit lovers who brutally murder her husband only to turn on each other when they are caught.
The actor teamed up with Bob Roberts to form an independent production company, Enterprise Productions, and their first feature was the boxing classic BODY AND SOUL (’47), for which he earned his second Oscar nomination as Charley Davis, a boxer who loses his way when he gets involved with an unscrupulous promoter. Not only does he have a strong chemistry with leading lady Lilli Palmer, but also African American actor Canada Lee as Ben, a boxer with brain damage. And Garfield gets to utter one of his greatest lines in BODY AND SOUL: “What are you going to do? Kill me? Everybody dies.”
Though his next Enterprise production wasn’t a hit, FORCE OF EVIL (’48), co-written and directed by Abraham Polonsky, is a terrific film noir with a hard-hitting Garfield as a corrupt attorney trying to save his numbers-racket brother (Thomas Gomez) from his gangster boss. Garfield returned to Warner Bros. and Curtiz in 1950 for THE BREAKING POINT, which was based on Hemingway’s 1937 novel, To Have and Have Not. It’s an outstanding film noir with a superb performance from Garfield as well as from Black actor Juano Hernandez who plays his partner on the fishing boat.
THE BREAKING POINT was Garfield’s penultimate film and was not a hit because The Blacklist was engulfing Hollywood and the actor, despite the fact he wasn’t a Communist. His film career was over in 1951 when he refused to cooperate with HUAC at his hearing. Before his death of a heart attack in 1952 at the age of 39, Garfield did appear in a short-lived Broadway revival of Golden Boy, which also starred Lee J. Cobb, a young Jack Klugman and Joseph Wiseman.
Though she was only 6 ½ when he died, Julie Garfield recalls seeing her father on stage in Golden Boy where he introduced her during the curtain call. “When he smiled at you it was like being in the sun,” she noted. “He was funny and sometimes he would like to dance and kick up his legs. I remember him adoring me. He used to take me to the merry-go-round a lot in New York. He was so strong, so handsome and he loved to kid me. He would give me this mischievous smile. I wish I remembered more about him…”

Happy Earth Baba Dr. Ben...
Dr. Yosef Alfredo Antonio ben-Jochannan [A Special Tribute]
The Black Man of the Nile and His Family
Dr. Yosef Alfredo Antonio ben-Jochannan (Dr. Ben) was the preeminent "Multi-Genius of Our Time." Therefore, he cannot be defined nor scrutinized by western academic standards given the fact that he forever altered how classical African civilizations, in particular the Nile Valley, can be viewed and examined in colleges and throughout the global African community.
Furthermore, Dr. Ben’s contributions to academia and the global African community stand alone as he represents not the floor of our potential, but the ceiling in which we can rise to. We, the global African community, adulate Dr. Ben for his groundbreaking scholarship and unprecedented service. Moreover, we praise enthusiastically his great work and sacrifice along with his love for African people and the Nile Valley.
As such, when it comes to the study and understanding of the Nile Valley, no one had a greater impact on the minds and hearts of African people at a global and grand scale than Dr. Ben. As an exceptional thinker and prolific writer, Dr. Ben’s scholarship regarding the Nile Valley along with his service within the global African community is not only exemplary, but unmatched – exceeding all others in terms of scholarly influence, community based impact, and global outreach.
In regards to the African origin of western civilization and religion, Dr. Ben’s contribution to the production of knowledge is monumental as evident in his most celebrated and best-selling magna opera: The African Origins of the Major Western Religions (1970), Africa: Mother of Western Civilization (1971), The Black Man of the Nile and His Family (1972), and We, The Black Jews: Witness to the White Jewish Race Myth (1983). Lesser-known, but no less important texts include collaborations with his frequent associate Professor George E. Simmonds, The Black Man’s North and East Africa (1971) and Understanding the African Philosophical Concept Behind the ‘Diagram of the Law of Opposites (1975) with Evelyn Walker, Dorothy Lee Cobb and Calvin Birdsong. As a spirited public intellectual and iconoclast, Dr. Ben published nearly fifty books and manuscripts.
Undaunted, and with such scholarly publications, Dr. Ben singlehandedly transformed the epistemological and pedagogical landscape of Africana (Black) Studies programs by introducing us to the Nile Valley where he frequently stated that “we came from the beginning of the Nile where God Hapi dwells, at the foothills of the Mountains of the Moon.” Indeed, for Dr. Ben, the beginning started in the Nile Valley on December 31, 1918 at Gondar, Ethiopia where he was born to an Ethiopian father, Kriston ben-Jochannan and a Puerto Rican mother, Julia Matta.
Soon after his birth, Dr. Ben’s family moved to Puerto Rico and St. Croix. After graduating from high school, Dr. Ben further embraced his intellectual quest for knowledge by pursuing higher education and advanced learning. As a result, Dr. Ben upgraded the legal training programs and services in Puerto Rico. Moreover, his thirst for knowledge was fulfilled with his remarkable expeditions around the world.
Having already traveled extensively to the Nile Valley during the summers of his youth, Dr. Ben immigrated to the United States, where he worked as an architect/draftsman in New York.
However, following in his father’s footsteps and inspired by the struggles around safeguarding Ethiopia from the invasion of Italy, Dr. Ben initiated numerous study abroad programs to Ethiopia, Egypt, and the Sudan. This particular experience along with many others laid the foundation for Dr. Ben to become one of the world’s most distinguished public intellectuals / scholars who advanced the study of Nile Valley civilizations.
By continuing his father’s admonition to return to ancient Africa as the foundation for the study of his people, Dr. Ben sparked the study tour movement among Africans away from home that has now become commonplace for African-Americans and others. His study tours of the 1960s and 70s paved the way for Dr. Ben’s historic 1987 pilgrimage to the Nile Valley which was undertaken by Association for the Study of Classical African Civilizations (ASCAC) cofounded by Dr. Ben. Dr. Ben’s friend, Emmy Awards broadcaster Gil Noble recorded that pilgrimage for his television show “Like It Is,” and the video for that show has been seen by hundreds of thousands for whom it has become a virtual study tour of the Nile Valley.
As an authentic public intellectual and committed community activist, Dr. Ben skillfully integrated scholarship with service by bringing colleges to the community and the community to colleges. By coalescing scholarship and service, Dr. Ben warmly embraced academia and activism as he cheerfully steered both colleges and community to the Nile Valley where the God Hapi dwells. Dr. Ben, therefore, modeled institutional academic study and research with community activism until his transition on Thursday, March 18, 2015.
As an engaged scholar and involved activist, Dr. Ben, like his mentors Marcus Garvey and Malcolm X, lectured gratuitously to the masses of African people on the street corners of the United States and globally. Dr. Ben also secured teaching positions at Malcolm-King Harlem College, Marymount College, Pace University, Borough of Manhattan Community College, State University of New York at New Paltz, Temple University, Howard University, Cornell University and Al-Azhar University in Cairo.
In addition to his academic responsibilities, Dr. Ben lectured to clusters of Africans in forums as wide-ranging as corporate America, such as Bell Laboratories to the Shrine of the Black Madonna while influencing Pan-African culture-keepers Fela Kuti and Randy Weston. Whether at colleges or in the community, Dr. Ben became known for his no-holds-barred intellectualism and activism while generously embracing Black people wherever he found them. Dr. Ben also disseminated his knowledge through forums as diverse as the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the Harlem Academy in New York City. Dr. Ben’s 1969 text, Africa, The Land, the People, the Culture marked his preeminent work on behalf of UNESCO.
As the first widely known African scholar to analyze the Abrahamic faith based traditions (Judaism, Christianity and Islam) and their origins, Dr. Ben judiciously debated scholars of all three religions and successfully traced the origins of western religions to the Nile Valley by way of primary sources. Dr. Ben’s scholarly publications, such as The African Origins of the Major Western Religions (1970), A Chronology of the Bible: A Challenge to the Standard Version (1973) and the trilogy: Our Black Seminarians and Black Clergy Without a Black Theology (1978), The Myth of Genesis and Exodus and the Exclusion of Their African Origins (1996), and The Need for a Black Bible (1996) serve to inform, inspire, and provoke generations of scholars.
The influence and presence of Dr. Ben are still felt with the likes of Dr. Leonard Jeffries, Dr. James Turner, Dr. Charles Finch, Dr. Wade Nobles, Dr. Maulana Karenga, Dr. Molefi Asante, award winning journalist Herb Boyd, Tony Browder, Ashra Kwesi, Runoko Rashidi, and Professor James Small. Dr. Ben also had a special influence on our female scholars, public intellectuals, and activists such as Dr. Rosalind Jeffries, Dr. Patricia Newton, Dr. Vera Nobles, Dr. Iva Carruthers, Dr. Marimba Ani, Dr. Adelaide Sanford, Dr. Joy DeGruy, Dr. Jewel Pookrum, Rkhty Amen, LaTrella Thornton, and Dr. Frances Cress Welsing. Furthermore, Dr. Ben has inspired a new generation of scholars, public intellectuals, and activists such as Bro. Reggie Mabry, Dr. Greg Carr, Dr. Mario Beatty, Nayaba Arinde, Manbo Asogwe Dòwòti Désir, and Professor Patrick Delices among countless others. Additionally, a special acknowledgment is extended to Dr. Georgina Falu who was also inspired by Dr. Ben and took it upon herself to translate three of Dr. Ben’s major books into Spanish while lecturing throughout Latin America on the contents of Dr. Ben’s works.
Dr. Ben is therefore recognized as the last of the great Black history scholars, public intellectuals, and activists which include the late Dr. John Henrik Clarke, Dr. Edward Scobie, Dr. Ivan Van Sertima, Dr. Charshee McIntyre, Dr. Jacob Carruthers, Dr. Richard King, Dr. Asa Hilliard, Dr. Amos Wilson, Steve Cokely, and Dr. Khalid Muhammad.
Dr. Ben’s service to the community is seen by his collaboration and partnership with Minister Louis Farrakhan, Reverend Al Sharpton, and Attorney Alton Maddox. Dr. Ben also worked closely with local community leaders and elders including Sybil Williams Clarke and Drs. Mary and Arthur Lewis in addition to the masses of African people at home and abroad.
Dr. Ben founded, cofounded, and inspired several organizations and institutions including the Africana Studies Department at the City College of New York, the African Nationalist in America [ANIA], the First World Alliance, ASCAC, the Blue Nile, the Board for the Education of People of African Ancestry, and countless others. In one of his most impactful efforts to build and sustain public spaces for African people to learn, debate and share widely the knowledge of our history and culture, Dr. Ben partnered with Bill Jones, Sister Khefa Nephtys and other Pan-African scholars and activists in New York City to initiate the First World Alliance in Harlem. The First World Alliance became one of the country’s oldest and most influential lecture forums devoted to the study of classical Africans civilizations along with the global African presence. First World’s platform hosted hundreds of scholars from the global African community - always beginning its annual lecture series with Drs. Ben and Clarke, as well as their colleagues, Dr. Leonard Jeffries, Dr. Edward Scobie, and Professor James Small.
Dr. Ben also held various pertinent executive positions at several premier organizations, schools, educational / non-profit boards, and cultural institutions. Dr. Ben's special passion was to create a Brotherhood, "The CRAFT" which would reflect the ancient sacred traditions and teachings of the Nile Valley.
In creating his own publishing company, Alkebu-lan Book Associates with his colleague George Simmonds, Dr. Ben joined Dr. Carter G. Woodson, Joel Augustus Rogers and later, Paul Coates and Haki Madhubuti in establishing independent publishing platforms for African thinkers and public intellectuals to advance their ideas and produce knowledge. His company’s distinct texts along with their colorful cardstock covers and unmistakable combination of typeset, maps, reproduced images, ephemera, and intermittent handwritten interjections created a new style of writing that was uniquely Dr. Ben’s.
As a pioneer in the field of Africana (Black) Studies and Egyptology, Dr. Ben, like his colleague and dear friend John Henrik Clarke, produced numerous curricula, lesson plans and countless professional development seminars for educators and activists to enhance the teaching of African history and culture at colleges and in the community. Dr. Ben’s publications on curriculum range from the Cultural Genocide in the Black and African Studies Curriculum (1975) to a study guide he coauthored with Dr. Clarke, which was published for the 1972 Congress of African People in African Congress: A Documentary of the First Modern Pan-African Congress. Moreover, in 1986, his lectures in London with Dr. Clarke, New Dimensions in African History: From the Nile Valley to the New World (1991) now serves as the most influential text and study guide for the teaching of global African history.
Dr. Ben’s lectures are thought-provoking and powerful, especially when examining the relationship between Black women and men – often using what appeared to be an intentionally provocative statement to simply enter a discussion of the centrality of the Black women to African life, cosmology, culture, and societies.
Ultimately, Dr. Ben’s life cannot be fully summarized in this literary tribute to him. However, Dr. Ben’s greatness can be summarized as the “Gift” that keeps on “Giving” for future African generations. In a way, Dr. Ben wrote his own epitaph in his books, manuscripts, lectures, and thousands of hours spent teaching us. Therefore, from this time forth to eternity, Dr. Ben is still teaching us, not at the colleges or in the community, but over the ancestral arc, that we came from the beginning of the Nile at the foothills of the mountains of the moon where the God Hapi dwells with our beloved Dr. Ben.
This tribute statement to Dr. Ben’s life and legacy is a written and research collaboration among Dr. Leonard Jeffries, Professor James Small, Dr. Georgina Falu, Dr. Greg Carr, Dr. Mario Beatty, ASCAC’s Board of Directors, Bro. Reggie Mabry, and Professor Patrick Delices.
Professor Patrick Delices is a political analyst/commentator for the Black Star News and the author of “The Digital Economy,” Journal of International Affairs. For nearly a decade, Prof. Delices has taught Africana Studies at Hunter College. He also served as a research fellow for the late Pulitzer Prize recipient, Dr. Manning Marable at Columbia University. Prof. Delices can be contacted at [email protected]

Henry: Salutations of the morning to you two ladies! I'm Attorney Jacob Edward James of James James Jarvis and James and at present and representing the missing person, henceforth referred to as one Ian Albert Worthington. President of the Canadian Bank, brother to Miss Lucretia Worthington, at present seated at this moment to my right and, fiancee of Miss Cassandra Chadwick, seated at this moment to my left.
Eva: Very pleased to meet you Miss Worthington, though I do wish it were under more pleasant circumstances.
Cassie: Well, I apologise for not sharing in your delight, but I never understood my brothers fascination with dolly mops!
Eva: You have some nerve...
Cassie: Why yes I do!
Henry: To- To the matter at hand? On this day in 1901 with witnesses present and in the offices of said attorneys, James James Jarvis and James (Brackenreid and Murdoch’s lines below begin here), I wish to make it known to the present parties of Miss Chadwick and Miss Worthington, on the aforementioned date and henceforth that said attorneys will invoke a policy of-
Brackenreid: (during Henry’s speech) Oh for the love of Peter!
Murdoch: Sir, are you sure that’s wise?
Brackenreid: Under the circumstances Murdoch, I think it’s imperative!
Henry: (phone rings) A-Attorney Jacob Edward James?
Brackenreid: Get a grip on yourself man!
Henry: Yes sir!
Brackenreid: And stick to the bloody manuscript!
Henry: Yes sir!
Brackenreid: And stop calling me sir!
Henry: Yes sir....
Cassie: *clears her throat*
Henry: Due to Mr Worthington's sudden and unexpected absence, I have invoked my power as attorney and will disperse funds accordingly. However I thought it appropriate to inform you, seeing as you are Mr Worthington's two existing heirs.
Eva: His two, heirs?
Cassie: Surprised? What, did the gold digger think she was getting it all?
Henry: Ladies I assure you, there is more than enough to go around. $500,000 dollars infact.
Eva: In, total?
Henry: No no no, each.
Cassie: Well, my brother will almost certainly reappear, very much alive!
Henry: Yes but, until either he or his earthly remains resurface, please, sign here.
Eva: But what if, god forbid he nor his body are never found?
Henry: Well then Miss Chadwick, I'm afraid Mr Worthington will be declared dead in absentia, and the estate divided betwixt you.
Eva: I see.
Henry: In seven years time.
Eva: Excuse me, you did say seven?
Henry: (nods)
So yeah, if anyone was wondering what the full speech was and in case you couldn’t hear it over Brackenreid, here you go!

#africanhistory365 #africanexcellence https://www.instagram.com/p/CqThn2UPKVD/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

(SAVANNAH, Ga.) — A Georgia state trooper was fired and charged with murder Friday a week after he shot a 60-year-old man who allegedly tried to flee a rural traffic stop, authorities said.
The president of Georgia’s NAACP chapter called the slaying of Julian Edward Roosevelt Lewis another chilling example of a Black man being killed unlawfully by a white law enforcement officer. An attorney for Lewis’ family said the trooper initiated the traffic stop over a burned-out tail light and Lewis was shot almost immediately after the trooper forced his car into a ditch.
“Mr. Lewis never got out of the vehicle and the investigation will show that, mere seconds after the crash, he was shot to death, shot in the face and killed,” attorney Francys Johnson said.
Lewis was a carpenter who recently helped a local ministry finish a construction project, Johnson said. He said Lewis’ wife told him her husband didn’t own a gun.
APThis undated photo released by the Georgia Department of Public Safety shows state trooper Jacob Gordon Thompson.
Johnson said that information was given to the family by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, which arrested 27-year-old Jacob Gordon Thompson on charges of felony murder and aggravated assault Friday. The agency did not include those details in its own statement on Thompson’s arrest.
The GBI said Lewis was fatally shot Aug. 7 after a chase in rural Screven County, about 60 miles (95 kilometers) northwest of Savannah.
Thompson had tried to pull over a car for a traffic violation when the driver tried to flee, the GBI said in a news release. The agency said the trooper chased the vehicle down several country roads before performing a maneuver that forced the car to come to a stop in a ditch.

At some point afterward, Thompson fired a single gunshot that hit Lewis, killing him, the GBI said. The trooper was not injured.
GBI spokeswoman Nelly Miles confirmed that Lewis was Black and the trooper was white, but she declined to comment further on the case. Richard Mallard, district attorney for the judicial circuit that includes Screven County, did not immediately return a phone message.
The Georgia Department of Public Safety said it fired Thompson after he was charged Friday. He had been a trooper for the Georgia State Patrol since 2013.
Thompson’s attorney, Keith Barber, declined to comment on specifics of the case, but said he believes the former trooper “has an excellent character.”
“I think he’s a fine trooper,” Barber said. “I think at the end of the day he will be exonerated in this case.”
The trooper was charged amid a national outcry over racial injustice after George Floyd died beneath a Minneapolis police officer’s knee in May. In Georgia, authorities also recently charged three white men in the fatal shooting of Ahmaud Arbery as he ran through their neighborhood as well as two white police officers in the shooting of Rayshard Brooks after he tried to flee a DUI arrest.
“No one should have to bury a loved one simply because of a busted tail light,” said the Rev. James Woodall, president of the Georgia NAACP. “This was a case of racial profiling. We are not necessarily happy right now. Yes, the man was arrested, but we’re done dying.”

Johnson said Lewis’ wife, Betty Lewis, learned of the trooper’s arrest as she left the funeral home after making final arrangements for her husband’s graveside service Saturday.
“She fell to her knees,’ Johnson said. “She said, `This is a step towards justice.’”
