Eren: Feeling cute, might skip class.
Mikasa: Don't.
Eren: And how do you plan to stop me?
Mikasa: I'll call mom.
Eren: No you won't.
Mikasa: You're right. I'm telling Armin.
Eren, gasping dramatically: I thought you loved me!

So Callowmoores am I alone in thinking it was cute that Fearne helped carry Ashton to the city? Like there's the parallel also with Ashton carrying her into the Bloody Bridge as well

Belonging — S. Rogers
summary: steve had left you for a time that had forgotten him, with only a letter as an explanation. you were given another him, in another universe.
pairings: steve rogers x reader
warnings: angst, very lazy summary, read for a sexy steve! alternate earth, stark reader, eventual soft!dark themes.
Tumblr media
“please state your name and where you came from,” the agent utters, tone void of any humane emotion as he gestures to the camera silently mocking you, as it blinked rapidly.
still rubbing your sore wrist, you kept your lips pressed together hoping to make this as unpleasant as you could. you'd been rudely transported into this warped timeline as you were being tossed into the air by a combat robot you used for training; you doubted the pile of metal and wires had the capability nor the powers to hurl you in another dimension, but you were still tossed, rather roughly on your ass.
yet before you even had the chance to process anything, or launch a defensive attack; several high powered guns were pointed at your person, and you were knocked out cold and brought to this interrogating facility.
SHIELD, you bitterly came to the conclusion. you were familiar with their protocols, their interrogation tactics, and their structure of their facility. you'd trained and worked several missions and recon assignments with some of the agents you've seen decorating their halls; even being ushered by colleagues you've shared stale coffee with, but they didn't know you here.
and you've simply reached the desired conclusion; this was an unfamiliar world.
though you have been leading a somewhat destructive life after losing nearly everything after the battle with the mad titan, there was still some self preservation left in you, and you didn't want to totally be obliterated in this foreign world with no body for pepper to mourn with.
what did taylor swift say? play stupid games, win stupid prices.
until you could communicate with friday, or be sure that you're totally safe here, you were going to be the most silent and unhlepful captive these walls have ever seen.
“state your name and where you came from.” the agent bellows firmly.
“what year is it?” you tilt your head, he purses his lips in thought, looking at you as if you're something foreign; then uttering the year.
“huh. so thanos was three years ago?” you breathe, “you guys beat him too?”
the agent looked at you with a suddenly, surprised expression.
“take my blood; run your tests. when you get the result, bring me your highest ranking officer.” you demand.
Tumblr media
"tony has a daughter." sam balks in disbelief, his mouth gaping in scandal at the mere prospect of tony's many exploits coming into fruiton. "an adult daughter."
"old news, small head big body." bucky snorts, putting the weights down. sam bristles, a snarky reply tethering on his tongue, yet steve interrupts.
"it's the worst kept secret around the compound." steve remarks amusedly, somehow finding the fact that covert special agents become loose lipped when it came to gossip. "the lesser known fact however, is where she came from." he grabs his flask, and sat upright from the bench, and rehydrated.
the other savory details of your appearance had been limited to a few people; mostly the avengers and the key personnel involved. they hadn't yet realized the reason as to why you'd be in another dimension entirely unprompted. and while they knew time travel was possible, being in an alternate universe was a topic they have yet to dabble in.
so while they try to identify which earth you were originally from, it was better to keep very few people about your origins.
"she just appeared." bucky nods conspiratorially, "an alien, basically."
"basically fit right in." steve shrugs, making light of how many otherwordly being they've encountered over the years. "tony adores her, though." he adds.
"she has everyone eating off her palm, let's be fucking honest." bucky chortles, "kind. endearing. smart. witty—"
"breathtaking actually." sam adds, recalling when he passed by you in the hallways.
"breathtaking." bucky agrees, smirking. "she's every bit of a stark. so much so, she hates steve's guts."
steve huffs, "hate is a strong word."
"you're right. she's incredibly polite, it's almost rude." bucky grins, making no effort to hide the fact that he enjoyed your interactions with steve.
you wouldn't be rude— no, you were the furthest thing from it. you would use honorifics even, call him captain or simply mr. rogers. your hostility with steve would be pronnounced every way that mattered, and bucky could tell it was starting to make steve flustered.
being captain america came with both adoration and hostility— the public either loved him or hated him, and he was used to such instances. steve couldn't please everyone afterall.
the way you looked at him though; it was more than animosity. it felt almost like.. like a scorned lover.
"oh fuck. i knew i shouldn't have been in that mission." sam chortles, while steve grumbles in annoyance. "went out of town once and i miss all these juice." he giggles, and bucky mirrors his grin. perhaps the only time they could maintain a conversation without hurling insults, and jabs at eachother; at steve's expense.
bucky gestures, "wanna know the worst part?" sam nods vigorously, "he's hot for her."
steve abruptly drops the weights he'd been using, making sam and bucky pause at the abrupt noise.
"are the both of you in elementary?" he chides, trying to keep his tone even.
"steve and y/n sitting on a tree, K-I-S-S-I-N—"
"fuck off!"
Tumblr media
your nerves settled as soon as the caffeine hits your tongue. your shoulders slumped, tension leaving you altogether, and you sighed a silent prayer.
you were plenty similar to tony when it came down to it; your pet projects had been less important where you came from, but so long as your objective was necessary, you won't sleep unless you achieve it.
now, going home was your primary goal... one you'd worked together with tony. or a moniker of him.
it felt strange to address him that way.
you knew their tony stark was different— their avengers stayed intact for one. but to see him again, his excellent goatie and hear his sharp wit, you'd tackled him in a frantic hug and sobbed so hard, he must have thought you to be lunatic.
tony was briefly informed of your identity, and while it wasn't an instantaneous paternal spark, he had felt for you. he had let you cry all you wanted. he consoled you, if a bit awkwardly. unpracticed, just like he had been when you wound up in his care at thirteen leaving him with primary custody.
just like then, he grew to become fascinated with you. you shared his love for engineering and technology. like the first time, he had spent every free moment he had with you; talking to you, getting you situated, making sure you were well taken care of... it felt like deja vu. and you would, eventually, lose him again.
you didn't exist here, just like he didn't exist back in your earth.
"careful."
"sorry!" your exclamation is abrupt as the paper cup crumbles in your hand, body jerking quickly as you avoid spilling coffee to the stranger. you had been so absentminded, you ran into a person's chest— cool baby blues, and the heroic perfect blonde hair paired with the most annoyingly perfect set of teeth welcomed you as you lifted your gaze.
steve rogers held you by your elbow, keeping you from tripping over yourself, "you alright?"
you felt as if something was lodged in your throat, being this close with him. he smelt unfairly delectable, despite being drenched in sweat.
this cannot be happening.
you squirmed out of his hold, and he politely took back his hand, keeping them to himself. just like you were, he was caught off guard. both by your reaction and his.
steve... steve was another complication. you couldn't get too close to him— there were many things left unsaid between the two of you, and you were terrified you would not be able to treat him fairly.
you were still angry with the choice he made.
when steve never returned from returning the stones; you'd assumed the worst. you would have exhausted every means to bring him back, if not for the letter bucky had given you.
he told you he couldn't stay; he told you he wanted to reclaim everything he's lost. he left you for a time long forgotten, and you never saw him again.
you liked to think you would understand him, if only he had told you. you liked to think you'd understand why he made the choice. it was what he wanted for himself.
yet you wonder, not unselfishly, if steve had loved you the way he had promised he did; if steve had known it would be possible to go back, will he still choose you? had he merely settled... were you just there; available, attached, and so starry eyed, you stoked his ego enough for him to forget momentarily.
for the past few months, all you did was agonize over the very fact; had every moment you spent with him been tainted with pretense and lies?
you entertained the very real prospect that he did not love you— maybe then the ache in your chest would not be replaced with anger.
because if he had loved you, the way he uttered in your skin; in a soft whisper, like a sigh of breath first thing in the morning. in a giddy exclamation, with his lips pressing upon yours. or in a dazed, soft coo as he bats away the exhaustion of the day. in a certain, so sure of a declaration, as he wraps you in a warm embrace... why was it not enough?
if he had loved you so assuredly and devotedly, he did not love you enough to choose you.
seeing another version of steve— adoring, with the same gentle cheer about him, so dreamy and bright, you stumbled.
he was steve... and yet he stayed. he had the same choice, yet he never took it. he didn't have someone like you though; so maybe, you were the offending factor in your version of steve. that made you ache.
"i apologize, captain." you purse your lips.
"nothin' to be sorry for," his tone was with a gentle lilt, "you uh.. liking the caffeine choices so far?" steve inwardly cringes at his attempt for conversation. he hadn't known how to talk to you, or how to make conversation with you— especially when you get that dazed look in your eyes, immedieately followed by a guarded expression as if afraid he would probe into your thoughts.
"it's excellent." you affirm, avoiding his gaze as if scalded. you hid your expression with your cup, and finally, steve reluctantly pries his gaze away from you.
steve walked towards the pantry, if to have something to do with himself, "yeah? half the team lives on the stuff, it's pretty good chunk of the budget." he pulls out a cup from the shelf, "once things get busy, it's not strange to find splatters of blood and torn pieces of clothing lying about. it gets primitive."
you fought off a smile. it was an appropriate retelling of how the team functioned— they were like siblings in a way. they have no problem taking a bullet for eachother, but once the coffee pot runs dry, they're throwing hands. the thought of your closest friends made you relax.
"that sounded wrong, did it?" steve winces, turning around with his own brew in hand. you looked at him with some amusement, hiding half your face in your cup, "no harm in a team bonding activity."
pink tinged his cheeks, "i didn't mean it like that." he flusters easily. the captain reminded you why you were fond of toying with steve. "i don't- i'm not.. i— i hope you don't think i'm inappropriate." his broad shoulders sag, looking at you like a kicked puppy, worried as can be of offending you.
steve was watchful of his language, especially when it came to dames; something about his upbringing being wired into his very psyche.
"i'm a stark, captain. would take a lot more to faze me." your eyes twinkled with mischief, and steve softens, almost awes at the genuine emotion he sees in you.
steve seemed to be the only one you were guarded against, and he'd been inappropriately envious of his teammates. they all talked about you in an excited flurry of retelling, like bucky had said, you had everyone eating off your palm. and he always wondered if he'd get to know you the same.
you caught his expression.. and it was as if a cold bucket of water drenched you.
"uh, i guess.. i have something to do." you gripped your cup, and steve stood straighter, opening his mouth to say something. anything. yet his limbs were faster than his... words. you look at him again, with little to no emotion in your face as he ponders how to make sense of his sneaking intuition as he grips your arm.
"did i do something to you?" steve asks, unable to stop himself.
"you haven't." you murmur, "i'm trying to keep it that way. i know from experience how that worked."

Imagine a jason that comes back to gotham, and establishes his criminal empire, all while (accidentally, hes still under the influence of the forbidden apple flavored kool-aid) helping the little guy. The bats are freaking out, trying to figure out who he is, but they cant, ots almost like he is a ghost (jason is competent, and knows how to go inder the radar). Then imagine him planning the attack on tim in the titans tower, but being informed by one of his goons about a deal black mask is doing. He shows up just in time to save tim, as he is being sold to the highest bidder. The sheer anger of seeing a kid like tim go through the same stuff he did while he was out on the streets breaks him out of the pits influence (the fact that tim is a rich kid, with no self preservation, hits jason even harder). He realises that putting tim permanently on the bench will help no one, and that sacrificing children in a crusade is not something that is unique to batman.
He saves tim from black mask, but simply drops him off by the manor. Tim is unconcious, and has no way of explaining to bruce that the red hood saved him, and so batman assumes the red hood was the one to hurt him. This makes him increasingly paranoid.
At the same time jason is realising how he can use his power to help the people of gotham (all while keeping up the crime lord front ofc), and jason makes the red hood a beacon of strength and hope for the gothamites, in a way that batman never could with his scare-tactics. The gothamites are helpful, and listens to him, and rallies aroumd the red hood if they need anyting done, from bullying a corrupt politician, to helping parents clean up a playground.
Jason finally has a support network and a community around him of gothamites and goons, and so he lets his guard down a little. Big mistake. Huge.
Batman catches a glance of his face in some random surveillance camera, and (as the paranoid, slightly mentally unstable individual he is), figures out who the red hood is, and automatically chooses to look past the good that hes done (yknow, significantly lowering crime rates, bringing a larger sense of unity to the city, cleaning up the streets, cleaning up after batmans big fights with his supervillains that destroy the city), and automaticalmy assumes he must be a bad guy, if hes not following his rules.
I can imagine batman telling the batkids to STAY AWAY, so ofc they do the opposite, and while batman assumes the red hood is evil incarnate, the rest of the batkids have a civil relationship with him. Nightwing goes on missions with the red hood, red robin trades intel with him, spoiler comes to him for advice on how to handle being a family disappointment (something the red hood gives suspiciously good advice for, almost like he knows how it is to be a batkid), robin keeps throwing jabs at him, that the other heroes dont know how he gets away with (damian and jason know eachother from the league, i will die on this hill, they love eachother), all the while bruce is growing increasingly worried for their safety (they dont understand why, after all, batman hasnt told them who the red hood is)
The thing is, batman is not the only one who has seen pictures of the red hoods face.
Joker wants to recreate jasons death, and make sure it sticks this time, with batman watching as extra entertainment. And so he plots.
Batman is constantly fighting the red hood, showing up to spoil his plans, and even going after his goons to send a message. He grows increasingly more violent and angry as jasons actions towards others dont reflect how batman thinks that they should be. He sees glimpses of his sons compassion in the way he helps others, and this doesn't mach up with how bruce assumes jason would act after coming out of the pit (because of course someone, probably tim, would figure out that was what happened to him), and even worse, jasons death did not make him violent and bitter (outside of the pits influence), as it did to bruce. And so he has to come to terms with the fact that his son has become better than him, without his guidance.
Jason doesnt even retaliate, just throws the batman off his scent, or fights him off. He is never overly violent, to bruce it just seems like batman is an annoyance to him. And he is right. Jason is simply tired of dealing with a father who obviously doesn't accept him, and has decided to end all hope of ever coming back to the family. Even the batkids notice how uninterested the red hood is towards batmans threats.
Although jason is no longer a regular human, he is still not infallible. He ends up getting so hurt that he has to stay off the streets for a while. And things get bad. People have simply gotten used to how safe the streets have become, and so the chaos that comes with a missing red hood comes as a shock. Batman is focused on fighting his self appointed nemesises, and going on missions to space with the league. The batkids and red hoods goons try to pick up the slack, but they dont have the knowledge, trust from the people, or the firepower to make up for the loss of the red hood. So jason has to return before he is fully healed. The pain hes in makes him slower (because he wont take any drugs for it), and so someone manages to get a hit on him.
He wakes up in a warehouse, tied up with batman.
The joker has the time of his life beating the shit put of jason infront of bruce. Harley quinn has even more fun using her competence as a psychologist to make these two emotionally stunted men actually realize how the other is feeling.
The joker finally has had his fill of demonstrating to batman how he hit jason with a crowbar, and leaves them to be blown up. Bruce is trying to alleviate some of his own guilt complex by giving jason a lecture, and blaming him for dying. Jason is simply fed up and bored.
The bomb goes off.
Jason is still alive. He forces himself out of his restraints. Apparently gotham wasnt finished with him yet, and so he could already see a way out of the now burning warehouse. He feels numb. His red helmet had come off at some point, and he shoves it back on. Jason then turnes to bruce. He too is okay, but unconcious.
The batkids arrive at the warehouse, scared shitless, because their dad, and the red hood who they now (because of damian) know is jason, are both in the raging inferno. Word of what has happened has also reached the citizens of gotham, who surround the warehouse in respect of their (assumed dead) red hood.
Everyone stares as a figure emerges from the fire, limping as they carry someone over their shoulders. The glowing eyes of the red helmet is a bright contrast to the soot and dried blood covering the red hood and batmans bodies. The red hood grunts in stoic pain as he lowers batmans body to the ground infront of nightwing and the batmobile.
Jason turns around and leaves. Either to murder the joker (and help a cat out of a tree), or to go home, treat his wounds and curl up on his lumpy sofa and finish his jane austen book. You decide.
The city no longer belongs to batman, its people have chosen the red hood as its protecter. It depends how mentally unstable bruce is, and how much the batman persona has taken over his life, but the control of the city being taken away from him either gives bruce the break to heal, and eventually reconnect with all of his sons, or it breaks him completely, and lead to an all out war against the red hood. Idk.

YANDERE! YANDERE! WHAT ARE YOU?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
—————
CLINGY- Most likely of them all to become a stalker, too emotionally attached, it’s a must to have you in their life. They just can’t do it without you! I need hugs and I need kisses and I need you to look at me! Tsk. Tsk. Such Needy little things.
“Where you going? In town near the shore? Oooo! Let me come!”
Ready to create shrines (already did) about you. Wants you. Needs you. Craves you. Your attention on  is more of a life source than food and water for them. Has videos & pictures of you. (They touch themselves to it) anything to remind them that you are with them, not with that bitch. Always trying to take you away from. Someone should teach her a lesson. They will throw a fit if you tell them that you can’t hang out with them today or that you are to busy and it’s because they will cling on to anything that tells them that you choose them, that you hang out with them because you like it, because you love it, I mean what could be more important than them?
-> Hange , Sasha , Krista (AOT) Hinata , Nishinoya , Yachi, Atsumu (HAIKYUU) Hinata , Ten-Ten , Konan (NARUTO) Gon , Pakunoda (HUNTER X HUNTER) Tanjiro , Mitsuri , Rengoku (DEMON SLAYER) Izuku , Kirishima , Twice (MY HERO ACADEMIA)

—————
POSSESSIVE- Yours. Hers. His. Theirs. Mine. They get off so bad with these words, rubbing their thighs together at just the mere thought of it. They must dictate and decide everything for you, you are theirs after all. You can eat this and this, don’t even think about trying that though and stay away from your Aunt Susan. Why? Cause I said so now do it. They want to direct the things you do. Make the things you do because of them. Power and ownership is what makes them choke you , watching as you sputter and struggle and only when they think that you’ve learned your lesson in disobedience that they stop. Just give it up, the sooner you stop fighting them and their decisions the better.
“ Good girl, now who do you belong to? That’s right. That means when I say for you to take my cock you fucking do it.”

I mean as long as your there they are fine with literally anything. Willing to do anything. Would give you everything if you so much as asked.
“Please! Please, tell me you want me! Tell me you love me!”

“How could you! You did this to me! Made me so weak and useless without you! I can’t breathe when you aren’t around! I’ll fall apart without you! It would be all your fault!”
They know what they are doing, know that you are too sweet to leave in fear of what would happen to them. So you stay and let them rule and command your life, you would be falling apart of the amount of emotional torture and manipulation that they put you through and they would be all shits and giggles. You aren’t leaving. You’re going to stay here with them through heaven and hell.
-> Eren, Connie , (ATTACK ON TITAN) Kuroo, Oikawa (HAIKYUU) Naruto, Shikamaru, Itachi (NARUTO) Phinks (HUNTER X HUNTER) Uzui, Shinobu , Daki ( DEMON SLAYER) HAWKS , toga (MY HERO ACADEMIA)
—————
SADISTIC-  You thought possessive YAN! was bad? Oh…sweetheart here they come…the minute they set their eyes on you you were theirs, and to ensure that they spread lies and cause rumors. Anything to get you alone,by yourself and hurt. Come crawling to them. Stay with them. Never leave them, you have no one else anyways. They will play nice with you, let you think that they are here to protect you that you are safe when you are the farthest thing from it. They will coo at you saying how cute you are, all small and fragile with only them by your side before smashing their fist on your head, they shudder at your pain. Not cause it grosses them out. No! No! Quite the opposite. They are drooling for your despair. Seeing you like this on your knees, tears streaming down your face as you sob in pain. God. How could they not want you?
They don’t dilute themself into thinking that this is for you or your safety. No, this is for them. They not only blush at the thought of you in pain but also for the fact that it’s because of them. They get off seeing you beg and babble. Gasp and scream for them to stop as you collapse on their cock. They giggle at your fruitless efforts, silly thing, you should know by now that your crying only makes them want to do it more. The power goes to their head, intoxicated at seeing you whimper in fear of them. They love you so much . They want to see you so helpless and out of power. To have your pleasure, pain and thoughts in their hands is nothing but a dream for them.
-> Levi, Zeke (ATTACK ON TITAN) MADARA (NARUTO) FEITAN (HUNTER X HUNTER) Sakusa kiyoomi?? (HAIKYUU) MUZAN (DEMON SLAYER) Dabi, Keigo (MY HERO ACADEMIA) ( ᴡʜʏ ᴅᴏ I ғɪɴᴅ ᴛʜᴇsᴇ ʏᴀɴ sᴏ ʜᴏᴛ)
—————
DELUSIONAL - Anything and everything is the problem but them. It must by the color of his shirt that’s making you look at him with such disgust. Green isn’t his color.. everyone knows that... You love them though. It’s the only explanation for how you act, running away when seeing them, you should be more forward with your feelings! They feel the same way! You’re just playing shy when you were dodging their kisses.
When you were yelling on how much you don’t want this. Tut, tut. Playing hard to get? We love each other. We’re made for each other. I love you and you love me. Now stop beating around the bush and come here.
“I only hurt you because of my love. My feelings. You feel the same way. You should understand. I’ll make you understand.”
-> Marco, EREN ( ATTACK ON TITAN) Sugawara , Yaku (HAIKYUU) ALSO SAKURA , Lee , Gaara (NARUTO) Shizuku , Cheetu ( I’m sobbing I dont know why I find that cheetah ant so hot)(HUNTER X HUNTER) Tomioka (DEMON SLAYER)
—————
SAFE GUARD-   Extremely overbearing. Must know where you are at all times, has to not only be aware but also have an opinion in what you are doing.
“You want to go where? Why? Here with me is perfect. Fine. Stop crying you can go, but I’m coming with you.”
Just accept it. You aren’t shaking them off. They watch, study & perceive, if not for you then for them, for their peace of mind . They love being your knight in shining armor (even though you didn’t need one) your protecter.
They keep you ‘safe’, and that fact alone is their pride and joy. I mean, what would you do without them? You need them. They don’t need you.( that’s what they tell themselves) you should be more grateful.
-> Mikasa , LEVI (ATTACK ON TITAN) Daichi , (HAIKYUU) Itachi , kakashi (NARUTO) Machi , Uvogin, killua, illumi (HUNTER X HUNTER) Akaza , Gyomei (DEMON SLAYER)

*YAPPING AHEAD, THIS IS LONG*
As someone who has circled through a LOT of fandoms, you know what differentiates the PJO fandom from most of the others? Their raging hatred for what normally would be a very popular character archetype. "Who's that character archetype then" you ask? The answer is Luke Castellan. Unirnonically, I'm complety straight with this.
Luke Castellan is one of the most popular character archetypes in most other fandoms I am/were in.
Now before I get further into this meta, we should establish what archetype Luke actually is and what the criteria are. To me, Luke is the classical Sympathetic Fallen Hero. Someone who only wanted what's best at the end of the day who was wronged by an unjust system, and pushed into straight-up villainy and evil deeds in a desperate attempt for revenge or justice. Oftentimes that push happened by him joining up with a larger, more evil figure who manipulated his hatred into serving this larger, evil goal. Generally also has some deep-rooted trauma in the form of a DARK backstory.
Like literally, that guy is TEXTBOOK. He checks all the boxes. -Someone who only wanted what's best at the end of the day
Check. His goal was a "golden age" for demigods, a future where they would no longer have to die during quests or would be abandoned by their godly parents.
-and pushed into straight-up villainy and evil deeds in a desperate attempt for revenge or justice.
Check. Luke wanted both revenge and justice, which led him to form the Titan Army and all the bad stuff he did. Some include attempting to kill Percy multiple times and leading attacks on camp. The obvious superiority the gods would have over a demigod army led to Luke allying himself with Kronos and other evil forces. (Thus the "desperate" part)
-Oftentimes that push happened by him joining up with a larger, more evil figure who manipulated his hatred into serving this larger, evil goal.
Check. On multiple occasions has it been mentioned that Kronos punished and pressured Luke, using fear tactics to get him to do what he wanted. I mean- Kronos himself said that he would have preferred Percy because he "did things easier" referring to taking the CoA ("I had to pressure Luke in many ways(.....)")
-Generally also has some deep-rooted trauma in the form of a DARK backstory.
Check. His mother went insane when he was still an infant. Hermes practically abandoned them, leaving Luke to be raised by his mentally unstable mother having episodes that scarred him so bad he hid in closets. He proceeded to run away at 9, living on the streets completely alone before meeting Thalia. From then on he went around with her having to deal with monsters. Hal happened, they met Annabeth and Luke started to get parentified/parentified himself. He proceeded to watch Thalia die as he attempted to get to camp at 14. At the same age he had his quest, which he failed and got himself a nasty scar. Luke proceeded to get no discernable mental help or sufficient support to deal with the mental strain resulting from that. Instead, he was put into a caretaker role for younger children not only showing him the results of the system's neglect first hand but also effectivley robbing him of any semblance of a childhood. Once Kronos got to him he continued to the plagued by nightmares.
All that being said, we now established that Luke in fact is a textbook example of what I call the Sympathetic Fallen Hero. (SFL for short from now on) Now onto my point that the other fandoms generally really love the SFL archetype that Luke is. That I will do with examples. Before I list these examples, a short disclaimer. I HEAVILY shortened and abridged the plot and storylines on here as to not make this post overly long. I definitely recommend checking each of these media/characters out for yourself.
Anyway, here we go : STAR WARS :
A big part of the fandom LOVE Anankin/Darth Vader whom they view as a SFH. (Even though him not really being a SFL in the way that he checks all the boxes. But I'm going with the majority fandom view here so ig Vaderkin counts. For those who want, I made a post on my main comparing him to Luke here and how Luke is what the star wars fandom pretends Vader is.)
MY HERO ACADEMIA/BOKU NO HERO ACADEMIA:
I want to talk the Villain Deku AU. Which is basically just an evil version of the MC who also checks all the SFH boces. The AU is hugely popular in the fandom with tons of fanart, animatics, cosplays and even a fan song. Honorable mention to the main anatonigst from the League of Villains, but especially Shigaraki and Dabi. They may not check ALL SFH boxes but an overwhelming majority. They are very popular with the fandom and generally regarded very kindly. Another honorable mention goes out to Stain. Also doesn't check ALL the SFH boxes, but most, and is also regarded generally positivley by the fandom.
THE PROMISED NEVERLAND
Norman, one of the main trio, spends a good part of the later manga seperated and leading his own resistance group against the main bad guy race (of monsters eating human brains- long story but I recommend the manga(don't watch s2 of the anime tho, it's basically the pjo movies for the manga)). Later on it is revealed that the main bad race isn't pure evil. Norman however got to the point where he wanted to commit a straight-up genocide against the race. Women, children, and elderly included. Bit of an outlier for a SFH, since he has no higher figure manipulating him into wanting to commit that genocide- but I'll let it slide. I did use the words "oftentimes" and "generally"- he also get's "redeemed" at the end/stopped from committing said genocide. Again the fandom regards him positively, even having him as a fan favorite.
NARUTO CLASSIC/NARUTO SHIPPUDEN
..... I mean most of the villains are SFH in that show. To the point where we would be here ages if I wanted to list them all. The two main examples most popular with the fandom tho would be Pain and Sasuke. Pain is a main villain whose home got destroyed, partially because of the MC's own home village. He watched his own parents die, and later lost one of his two best friends which finally pushed him over the edge (among others). Pain is also an outlier in terms of a SFH since he didn't have a major bad guy to manipulate him, instead leading his own evil (basically) terrorist cell. His goal was to achieve world peace by harnessing an ancient power, wanting others to suffer as much as he did so they recognize the value of peace. He killed a BUNCH of people. Pain did later revive a good chunk at the price of his own life however post redemption by the MC. Sasuke is the secondary MC and rival of the protagonist. Honestly he has so much going on I couldn't possibly mention it all. Basics are that his family got killed by his own brother due to difficult politics, he was the only survivor. His drive for revenge against his older brother caused him to join up with the main bad guy of Naruto Classic who rly only wanted him as a vessel (flashbacks much). Sasuke betrays his home for the bad guy to get the power he needs to take revenge. All that was stoked by the main bad guy and his comments. More plot happens, turns out the brother rly wasn't entierly bad and was also just used by other higher powers. Sasuke switches sides again and kills OG bad guy and joins up with Pain's previously mentioned terrorist group. The main goal from there is to destroy his home village who used his brother. He was not shy to kill ppl at that point, and was also basically ready to just commit a genocide on his own home. More plot happens, he get's redeemed eventually. Again in both cases the two are CRAZY popular with the fandom.
PERCY JACKSON AND THE OLYMPIANS
I talked about this once already on here, but the fandom seems to LOVE AUs where dark!Percy just opts to straight up overthrow Olympus. I don't think i have to elaborate more on that tbh, but for those that are interested: Here's the post I made about the fandom's hypocrisy concerning dark!Percy and Luke.
And those were only 5 examples, there are many more SFL examples LOVED by the fandom I haven't mentioned here. I'm sure of that.
Seeing this pattern really makes me wonder why Luke seems to be so despised. Logic would dictate him to be rather popular.
My personal theory ? It's a mix of a few factors. Those being : A) The fandom over-sympathizes with Percy Jackson
Percy is easily the most popular character in the fandom. He is the MC afterall. The fandom tends to take his side no matter what, without properly and honestly empathizing with his enemies. It's similar to having rose tinted glasses with a relative or friend. You take their side no matter what- not even wanting to hear out the other side. The fandom seems to have an inherent bias towards Percy, those nice to Percy are viewed positivley. Those having more negative interactions (,even if the interaction is relatively low on the nagtive scale, like a character being critical of Percy for example,) are generally viewed more negativley.
B) The First Person POV of the books and the average age of the fans when they first read the books.
This relates to the first factor in the way that the very Percy-centric set up of the fandom AND the books influence the fandom's perception of characters. The books where Luke appears in are all in Percy's POV. Luke as a character in very complex and needs a lot of empathy and reading between the lines to properly understand and analyze. The books being in Percy's POV hurt Luke in the way that Percy's opinion of Luke is omnipresent with him. Any First Person POV is inherently unreliable, thus Luke often gets presented as a rather one-dimensional evil since that's what Percy views him as for most the book. Luke lacks his own POV, meaning he doesn't really get the chance to truly explain himself. Then ontop of that is the fact that everything he does is filtered through Percy's eyes which are inherently hostile towards him ost the time. Such delivers a wrong first impression of Luke throughout the books. The fandom, due to their attachment to Percy, often do not take their time to objectivley reevaluate his POV or confront the fact that he's an inherently unreliable narrator. Especially for Luke. Furthermore, from what I have seen are a lot of the fans in the fandom "old timers". People who read the first few books as young children and were children when their opinions of characters formed. Them having been so young when first getting introduced to the characters saw them often unable to even really realize all I said above. It also further glorifies Percy as he get's the nostalgia bonus. People generally do not like to challenge their own believes, so large parts of the fandom never took their time to reevaluate Luke and his story once they got older and learnt about the concept of Unreliable Narrators.
C) The fandoms views Luke as a threat to Percy and Percabeth.
This relates to both factors above, while also including the popular false narrative of Luke being a "pedo" or "groomer" If you read the first five books you will see that besides his last question to Annabeth at the end, nothing Luke does can be even remotely read as pedophilic or grooming of nature. Quite the opposite acctualy! He has stated on multiple occasions canonically that he sees his relationship with Annabeth as platonic. The ONLY canonical romantic relationship he had was with a grown monster. He's only ever portrayed having interest in adult women (monsters) , and even that romance plot is just barely there. The fandom, again, is overly attached to Percy however. And they do not like it when other characters challenge him. Luke however is the MOST challenging character for Percy. Not only does he serve as main antagonist, but he also serves as a narrative foil to Percy. He is what Percy could become. He's the canonical dark!Percy AU. He's the other side of the coin toss. Furthermore, Luke also challenges Percy not only on the physical department (fights) but also in terms of morals. At the end of the day Luke was right afterall. One could argue that Percy wasn't really fighting for the "good guys"- he was simply fighting for the "lesser of two evils" Luke brings moral challenges to Percy. He doesn't allow Percy to be a wholly good , squeaky-clean hero. Percy was fighting for the upkeep of an oppressive system. (If U wanna argue with me on the gods being oppressive, take it up with the offical wiki article first : found here) Percy killed other demigods. Percy had flawed views. The fandom who over sympathise with Percy didn't like that Luke was an active threat towards the "goodness" of their favorite. The easiest way out eliminate that "threat" was to demonize Luke. Thus making his points "invalid" as he now was a pure evil villain only aiming to hurt. (Same for the entier TA btw) Percabeth is just as popular as Percy. Annabeth had a deep and important connection to Luke- at the time of the books arguably even deeper and more important than her connection to Percy. Throughout the book has Percy expresses annoyance at Annabeth's insistence in holding onto Luke. This combined with the points above saw Luke being viewed as a possibly threat, due to him being arguably the most important person of the other gender in Annabeth's life. And an obvious point of contention between Percabeth. Inorder to lessen that "threat" the fandom turned to demonizing Luke (again). Annabeth's and Luke's relationship can easily be swept away by saying that Luke was interested in her romantically thus making him a pedo, no ? As for the grooming....... honestly? People just used a buzzword there, because if Luke truly had groomed Annabeth she would have been on his side on the books. All I can say there is please you guys, read a dictionary and know what words mean before you use them.
D) Rick fumbled HARD writing Luke
Luke may just have been the biggest continuous mistake Uncle Rick made in terms of writing. His characterisation in the first two books made him seem VERY evil and unlikable, which is bad as a first impression for a character such as him. SFL like Luke need a lot of focus and insight aswell as sympathy to get behind them. In most examples I mentioned for SFL they backstory was known very early on and they had a lot more focus outside of villainy. Rick simply didn't give that. The backstory reveal with Luke happened far too late, he was far too evil with too little insight for a SFL in the first two books. His "redemtion" was a bit rushed. We got basically nothing on his relationship with his army. His goods sides and his doubts weren't really highlighted enough early on. His last words and questions to Annabeth were frankly said stupid. It broke the themes of family between Luke and Annabeth to some degree and only served as fodder for later accusations. The fact that it was (apperantly) later confirmed that he romantically loved Annabeth was just straight up stupid. It wasn't in character at all and just broke the themes even more, not to mention that it goes against everything we previously saw or heard of Luke. Not to mention that it also just served as further fodder for the fandom to demonize Luke.
Thanks for everyone who stuck around to read this absolute giant of a meta XD Probably was the largest Tumblr post I have written so far.

CHAPTER 20 - FLASHBACK: TEN
Eighty to forty.
Slashed in half.
On paper, the tactical statistics sound nothing short of a miracle.
In a division plagued by endless casualties, any hope of saving lives rather than destroying them should (and will) sanction blind approval from higher command.
For the commandant, for the king, for the people behind those Walls relying on this team to succeed in breaching the forest to pursue the mission of the Scout Regiment, it’s the best idea curated to date—
And it’s all thanks to Commander Erwin and his right-hand man, Captain Levi.
Levi Ackerman insists he can take on any Abnormal single-handedly.
Commander Erwin insists his Special Operations squad can and will find a way through the thick of it, once and for all.
A triumphant success for humanity, no matter the cost.
— but that was on paper.
When you wake, Levi isn’t beside you in your bed.
His disappearing act in the morning isn’t unusual nor is it disappointing.
By now you're used to waking up without him, though you only find yourself sleeping thanks to him.
(He's admitted that, if he doesn't slip out earlier than when you wake, then he may never leave.)
Although your relationship is the worst kept secret within the Special Ops squad, it’s still just that:
A secret.
What is not a secret, however, is the trajectory of what’s to come.
Not every day in the regiment is a nightmare, but this is the type of day the average cadet dreads when they pledge their allegiance to the Survey Corps.
So you ready for the day with noticeable weight on your shoulders.
A determination to see this through.
A promise to show up for your fellow man.
(An oath to Levi that the two of you will make it out of this alive and see another sunrise.)
Today will be brutal, but you can prevail.
Stepping out of your quarters in full Scout gear, you hear the whinnies and whines of nearing horses as they gallop toward headquarters.
You fix the collar of your cropped tan jacket in time with your footsteps descending down the stairwell, mind elsewhere.
Bodies hurry in and out of the open front door. Gear clinks. Blades sheath.
“Lieutenant James!”
That voice belongs to no soul you know.
You stop dead in your tracks right in front of the open double doors. Turning to the sunlight, you raise a hand to shield the rays to locate who may have spoken your name.
Before you stands an entirely new group of Scouts that you’ve never seen before. Fresh-faced and determined, if not a little terrified — there is a large array of them standing around in a semicircle at the mouth of headquarters.
All adorn the Wings of Freedom.
All press their fist backwards to their heart, denting the emblem.
You realize some of their faces look familiar.
Albeit it was a brief stint as a cadet in the training corps, recognition flutters over your face as you spy some of the hopefuls that slept not so far from your bunk in the barracks.
It's been years. What were once youthful faces now age well before their time.
“Lieutenant, sir!”
The one in the center, a short-haired woman with glasses, barks once more.
“We’re pleased to make your acquaintance and to serve under the command of Humanity’s Strongest.”
At first you say nothing, dazed at the sheer number of this squad.
Seven people hold steadily onto seven individual horses, their shoulders shrouded by emerald green cloaks. Some keep their hoods adorned to the crowns of their heads. Others bare their nervous but brave faces to you.
“At ease,” you murmur, and they lower their fists. “I wasn’t aware another squad was joining us this morning.”
“Miro Squad, sir, at your service,” the short-haired person greets, bowing. “I received Commander Erwin’s urgent letter for additional soldiers in the pursuit of breaching the forest.”
They take a half-step back and gestures to their team, pointing out every soul on their squad.
Miro, their leader; Trina, their second-in-command with wild fiery hair; and Scouts Orin, Max, Penelope, Cesca, and Rini.
Seven additional Scouts.
Fourteen Scouts in full for this Hail Mary of a mission.
Then it hits:
Proposing half of the original projected damage was bold, even for someone as shameless as Commander Erwin.
He had no qualms with setting this mission up with the new layout provided by Levi, ensuring as much of an air-tight plan as possible.
Eighty to forty percent is nothing short of a miracle.
But miracles do not exist in the Scouts.
Your stomach drops into the dirt with the sickening realization of what Commander Erwin’s grandiose solution really meant.
Miro Squad is the forty percent reduction.
A cruel and inhumane buffer of surefire casualties in order to keep the Special Ops squad intact during the breach.
You’re staring at a group of devoured bodies before you even reach the trees.
“It’s…”
You struggle with your words before slamming your backward fist to your heart, raising your chin.
Some of the younger Scouts stare in awe at your blatant display of honor.
“It’s wonderful to meet you, Miro Squad.”
You bow, though you feel dirty for doing so.
“I trust Commander Erwin made you aware of today’s efforts?”
Miro nods. “We intend to serve however we can.”
They don’t know.
They need to know.
They need to make an informed decision before—
“Lieutenant,” a deep voice sounds behind you, and your skin crawls.
Turning your chin, you stare eye to eye with the blue-eyed man boring down on you.
Commander Erwin appears somber.
Stoic.
“Yes, Commander?”
The question is small, but it drips with a knowing venom.
Erwin is not fazed. “Captain Levi is tending to the horses at the stables. Can you aid him in preparation before departure?”
To you, you conjure what appears to be a clear answer woven between the lines:
Do not interfere. Do not disobey.
You hold rank to an extent in the Scouts, but what the Commander says, goes.
Continuing to hold his icy blue stare, you try to convey the question you cannot say out loud.
(Do they know what is about to happen?)
Erwin continues to stare right back, not the least bit fazed by the conflict in your brow.
He is confident. He is headstrong.
An answer.
They're going to dedicate their hearts.
(Just like you, too, promised years ago.)
Without another word, you turn on a heel and beeline straight to the stables.
Anger.
Why do you feel so much anger?
Is it because the outcome feels bleak well before mission has started?
Are the odds truly this stacked against humanity?
When you reach the parted doors of the stables, he's there — Levi Ackerman stands in front of his black stallion, gliding a gentle hand down its muzzle.
He senses your presence well before you even say a word.
He turns easily to you, but his eyes sharpen a fraction when he picks up how pinched your shoulders are.
“James,” he greets neutrally, brow knitting. “What’s—”
“Miro Squad just showed up.”
“Who?”
“Don’t play dumb,” you snip, making your way to your own horse — she has a white coat with speckled gray spots all along her body.
She makes a small chortle noise when you near and you serve your flattened palm to her for a nuzzle.
(Behind the pen doors, you note she already has her gear in place. Levi must have already saddled her up for you while you were getting ready.)
The dark-haired man to your left sighs in a huff.
“Not playing dumb, James. I was genuinely asking.”
“It’s the squad Erwin’s setting up for slaughter,” you decide to elaborate hotly.
A pause passes.
You don't turn to see Levi's expression, but you can sense how tense the space between the two of you has become.
“If it’s Miro Squad he called to action, then they’ve fared well in comparison to the other squadrons," he argues with little fire. "Did he personally request them?"
"Allegedly."
"Allegedly?" Levi repeats, sharper in tone. "Either he did or he didn't."
"According to Miro, yes, he sent an urgent letter requesting aid."
Finally you turn a cheek towards him, forcing your eyes to meet.
You know that look he gives you sidelong.
Don’t start.
(Neither of you need to fight again, not before this mission.)
"Then Erwin didn't pick a random crop of Scouts to shit the bed and die on us," Levi reasons, softer. Conspiratorial. "I know you think he’s a bastard, but—”
“Worst case scenario,” you interrupt, “at least his Special Ops team won’t die?”
“If my strategy goes well, then no one dies." He counters with the certainty that’s entirely Levi. “You forget my name is on the damn ledger, too, unless this is you trying to tell me something.”
White-hot embarrassment courses your veins as your childhood friend waits for you to challenge his statement — to call him an equal-part premeditated murderer sat right beside the commander.
You can’t.
You won’t.
Instead you cool off by slowly petting your horse, willing your bad feeling to wither away.
After a moment, Levi wills his voice to soften again. “We need as many Scouts as we can—”
“I know.”
“—and even then, if we all kick the bucket, it's on me."
Levi finishes with a heavy sigh. He turns away, dropping his chin to his chest.
“I'll take whatever punishment fits the crime if it goes to shit."
A beat passes.
Blinking several times, you turn your body to him and drop the attitude.
“...and I'll do everything in my power to make sure we stay alive," you whisper softly. "That everyone comes home."
Levi’s head hangs, cascading his wispy black hair as a curtain over his face.
“That's not supposed to be your burden."
"Where you go, I go, remember?" you tell him. "For better or worse, I don't care."
"Wanna workshop vows, huh?" he mumbles. "Right now?"
This seems to ease the air about the stables.
Centimeter by centimeter, twin pairs of shoulders release in their tension.
You can't help but smile, even if the moment is tense.
"I think the Commander would find the dramatics funny."
"Oh, sure, proposing to your ass right before the single-biggest mission in Scout history would really tickle his funny bone," he sarcastically replies.
"It'd sure tickle Hange's."
"Hange doesn't need more ammunition, not after catching our asses that one time—"
"That one time that was your fault, you mean?" You grin as he glares. Still, his scowl is playful. "Loud Mouth Ackerman—"
"Shut up, Lieutenant."
Levi lets go of his horse and raises his hand, palm outstretched.
“Get the hell over here before anyone catches us a second time, alright?”
Albeit small, he smiles.
It's forced, like he wants to remember this — to focus on this.
The final moments before the point of no return.
Like a moth to a flame, you step away from your horse to step towards the short, dark-haired man.
Once you’re close enough, he pulls you in from the nape of your neck and drags your forehead to his, pressing them together.
His eyes squeeze shut.
You stare, memorizing his face.
“I love you,” he murmurs. “Don’t die.”
All the anger in your body melts away.
“I love you, too,” you reply just as softly. “I won’t—”
The stable door creaks.
You leap off of the captain to pretend like you’re picking up the bucket of water at his boots.
Levi stays put, dropping his arm like dead weight.
“Captain. Lieutenant.”
You don’t need to see the face to know it’s Erwin’s voice echoing through the stables.
“It’s time to move out.”
You both reply in unison, two different octaves.
“Yes, sir.”
.
.
.
.
.
The formation is simple:
Captain Levi leads the charge into the forbidden forest with Lieutenant James at his side.
Behind them in a diamond formation are the Special Operation Scouts Petra, Oluo, Gunther, and Eld.
Command Erwin, Section Commander Hange, and Moblit remain at headquarters for the recon and debrief.
At the rear of the formation are Miro Squad to specifically call out nearing and flanking titans that the first squad may miss.
They shadow the Special Operations unit as back-ups, no matter the cost.
And at first? It's easy.
Deceiving easy.
The mouth of the forest gives little trouble.
Both squadrons of Scouts breach the thick grove of towering trees without incident.
Thirty minutes into this mission, in the belly of this beast, not a single Abnormal has been spotted.
There aren't any typical titans, either.
It’s quiet.
Serene.
“Alright, listen up!”
With his hands tightly wound around leather reigns, Captain Levi finally calls to the Scouts behind him.
“Keep your eyes peeled. Abnormals do not move like other titans. These shitheads can be fast and appear at a moment’s notice.”
“Right!” Several of the Miro squad shouts back.
The Special Operations squad is too focused to reply.
Whenever you glance over at Levi, he’s smooth as stone.
He refuses to allow any emotion cloud his judgment on a mission, and you can imagine it won’t be any different this go-around.
Because this mission cannot fail.
The Scouts must push forward, no matter the cost.
(Even if the irrevocable cost makes you sick to your stomach.)
The sun shines bright over a canopy of trees.
Your cloak is too warm in this type of weather.
As you push further into the thick of the terrain, nearing what is assumed to be the halfway point of the forest, birds chirp less and less.
Eerie silence overtakes the pounding of hooves into the dirt.
Then, as fast as an inhale, you see it:
Directly ahead trudges a nine-meter titan, peering around a thick tree trunk.
"Captain!" Gunther shouts. "Ahead at our twelve!"
"I see the piece of shit," Levi calls back. "We keep moving. I'll take care of it."
You don't doubt that he will.
As it continues to slowly advance on your formation, you can tell the team is a little more tense.
Ready —
Except no one was prepared, not really.
The titan ahead is an army of one, but it is not the only titan here.
It was just the only one right in front of you.
Behind you sounds a scream so bloodcurdling that you nearly lock up on your horse.
You turn despite yourself.
Within seconds, you see Max get ripped clear off of his horse with the sheer force of otherworldly strength.
(...a hand?)
Then, a gust of wind sweeps and swirls the dirt into a lackluster tornado.
His horse narrowly escapes.
It rolls over and over, kicking up a thick dust cloud.
Max speeds through the air at breakneck speed like a human arrow —
Until he abruptly crashes into a thick tree trunk, dislocating his spine from his head.
The crunch is like ripping a stalk of ripe lettuce in half.
He simply crumples against the tree, limbs peacefully blowing in the wind like a leaf.
His Scout cloak billows over his shocked face, forever frozen in belated surprise.
Gone.
Just like that.
Then from the shadows, as if waiting for its prey, a five-meter titan stumbles around a tree to chomp on the recently deceased body.
It gnaws off his legs as they dangle in the air, spattering blood all over the forest floor.
Your horse gallops on.
You can't look away.
Then someone screams, forcing your eyes to rip away from the horror.
“Cesca!” A blonde girl shrieks to the right of the formation — Penelope, you think her name is. “Don’t!”
“It's devouring him!” Cesca wails at the top of her lungs. “We have to go back for him!”
“He’s already dead!” Trina calls with experienced calm. “There's no use, soldiers! Keep your eyes forward. We keep moving!”
“James—”
Your head turns when Levi calls to you.
Wide eyes meet a narrowed gaze.
“—that means you, too.”
Your eyes round with the realization that everything is happening so fast yet moving in slow motion.
What was that thing?
Was that a... ?
You were so busy watching Max get eaten that you didn’t realize three more titans appeared on the northeast corner, awakened by the screams of Miro Squad.
Shit.
This isn’t good.
This is not good.
“Levi,” you begin slowly, but he shakes his head.
"Don't hesitate. We push forward no matter what."
He's right.
Max is dead.
You just have to hope the rest of Miro squad keeps their wits about them.
You turn your head to make eye contact with Miro.
“Faster!”
“Roger, Lieutenant,” Miro tells you before shouting to their team. “Keep going, Scouts! We should be halfway through the clearing.”
“Miro,” Trina alerts them sharply, "three more titans are crowding from the right."
“Shit, what does that make it now? Seven of them!?” Miro hisses.
(Seven?)
Your eyes connect with Petra who appears equal parts shocked at just how quickly this mission has dissolved.
“I— there's a whole bunch of them in the back!”
Penelope calls frantically, staring behind her.
"They're surrounding us!"
Three to the east.
Another three to the northwest.
A couple to the south, and another...
Something entirely unlike anything you'd ever seen before.
“Captain, we’re going to need to ditch the horses,” you tell Levi in a hushed voice.
“Not yet,” he replies, smooth and certain.
“Not yet?" you repeat. "Levi, we have an entire army of goddamn titans on our—”
“I said not yet,” he coolly bites. “I’ll handle them.”
You know he will.
You just don’t want him to go up against them on his own.
Suddenly someone from the right side of the formation ignites their ODM gear, and they swoop overhead.
Blonde hair whooshes straight by the team and into the forest thick.
Penelope is the first to pull the trigger.
“I’m gonna get ahead of the curve and attack!” she calls, zipping through the trees towards some of the smaller titans.
Levi says nothing, but Miro shouts to their own squad:
“That wasn’t the plan! Damn it, Penelope!”
Her body rounds one of the tree trunks and heads right, disappearing.
Say something.
Say anything.
If that thing that killed Max is how an Abnormal moves, then Penelope doesn't stand a chance on her own.
You speak to him again. "Captain—”
“Not yet, James.”
“Penelope is going to get killed!” you argue, your grip on the reigns tightening.
“That’s the choice she made,” Captain Levi argues in return, sounding a little too much like Commander Erwin in the moment. “Remain steady and wait for my signal.”
Twigs fold and crackle under new weight to your right.
Then a thud shakes the straight through the horses and into you.
Penelope must have taken down at least one normal titan.
“Captain!”
Miro shouts in the middle of the squad.
“Should we engage? My squad can take care of the titans and carve a path forward!”
There is a tense, pregnant pause.
Everyone waits for Levi's instruction.
Two smaller titans walk directly towards the horses.
The dark-haired man's nostrils flare with decision.
“I’m going to take down the two ahead,” Levi shouts, effortlessly swinging a boot to the saddle of his horse.
With the muscles of his thigh he pushes until both boots are surfing against his running horse.
His black hair blows wildly in the wind. Like a well-oiled machine, he pushes back his cloaks to reveal his ODM gear, readying for deployment.
"Miro, take your squad and eliminate the enemies flanking us. You can come back to us once you're finished."
“What about the rest of us, sir?” calls Oluo.
Levi’s eyes narrow at the enemies ahead.
“My squad will keep the horses going. We need to make it to the end of this forest, for humanity's sake."
"And Captain, what about Penelope?" you quickly ask.
"She's a lost cause, Lieutenant."
He speaks with that coldness he's been forced to adopt ever since your days in the Underground.
"We can't go back for her."
You turn to watch as Miro squad disengages formation and turns around, charging bravely towards the crowd of titans forming behind.
An array of shapes and sizes await their swords.
(Or their flesh.)
Any minute now and it could be a bloodbath.
Any minute—
Levi flies off of his horse, trapezing through the trees.
A gas trail from how hard his gear is working is your only indicator for where he is at such a height.
He twirls with the shine of his unsheathed swords, slashing the napes of the two large titans ahead.
A victory.
Except it's a short-lived victory, because you hear it behind you—
Miro squad.
They're in trouble.
Even from this distances you hear Cesca, Rini, and Orin scream and panic.
Scouts fly between tree branches with smoke trailing behind. ODM gear ignites and retracts without any real clear sense of direction.
They're drowning back there.
You see the silhouette of someone falling to the forest floor.
"One of us needs to help them," you tell Eld, and he shakes his head sharply.
"You heard Captain Levi."
"They're two fucking Scouts down, Eld!" you snap at your comrade. "We'll lose seven whole people!"
"We can't go against captain's orders, Lieutenant!" Petra calls to you, and Oluo nods beside her.
Scanning your squad still soldiering ahead with the plan, you feel something grip your heart.
Yet another gut-wrenching shriek sounds from the forest.
Maybe it's Penelope.
Maybe it's Cesca.
The voices reverberate and echo through the forest that it's hard to tell.
You don't even realize that you're moving your hands over your cloak to push it out of the way.
Eighty to forty.
"The hell are you doing!?"
The clipped tone of Levi Ackerman as he drops back onto his stallion rips you back into focus.
His knee drops to the saddle, facing his soldiers rather than what's ahead.
Your eyes meet narrowed gray.
"I can help," you tell him calmly. "They're going to die."
"Stay."
"They're going to die, Le—"
"Stay, Lieutenant." Levi's nostril's flare. "That's an order."
Miro squad's screams continue to haunt your subconscious.
You promised.
You said you'd stay by his side.
But isn't this what the Scout Regiment is for?
To save humanity, to give them hope.
It used to be something you felt was such a crock of shit, but you can't ignore the screams back there.
You can't let them die.
"I'm going to help them," you tell him without a tremor. "You know I can do it."
Levi's eyes flash with an indiscernible emotion.
"We'll all come back in one piece. I'll guide them to the horses."
"No."
"And we'll make it to the end of this fucking forest."
You stare back at him, pleading a forgiveness you haven't asked for yet.
(You saved me once. Let me save them.)
"If you go," he growls, "James, if you go, I'll—"
"I'll take whatever punishment fits my crime," you cut him off, "but I can't let them all die."
His pupils shrink, sharpening the whites of his eyes.
The wheeze of ODM gear bursts into life as it lifts you off of your saddle and into the forest sky.
Without thinking, you twist at the hip and take off—
You head south towards the screaming squad as they fight to break free from the titan hoard holding them hostage.
Wind freezes your cheeks.
The outlines of their bodies grow more pronounced the closer you become.
Soon you see five Scouts flying around, swinging their swords to destroy the last remaining titan.
Below are a cluster of smaller dead ones decaying by the second.
Trina, Miro's second-in-command, screams at the top of her lungs as she reaches out to her comrades.
"Help! Please, I don't want to be eaten! Please!"
She's stuck in the clutches of a ten-meter titan, slowly bringing her closer and closer to its open mouth.
They’re everywhere.
(How did everything go so wrong so fast?)
You don't think about dying. You don't worry about how upset Levi will be when you return. You don't stop to second guess your actions.
You don’t.
You just do.
Yelling at the top of your lungs, you rip both blades from their metallic sheaths at your hips.
Spinning from the momentum of your swing, you slice straight through the wrist of the titan holding Trina hostage.
She falls with enough smarts to break her fall with her own gear.
“James!” Trina cries out with equal parts despair and relief. "What the hell are you doing here?"
"I came to make sure you were all okay," you tell them, shaking your head. "I guess you didn't really need back-up. We still have your horses..."
But you trail off, confused.
They should be relieved.
They killed every last titan back here.
Yet the Miro squad cling to the trees, skin as translucent as ghosts.
"Something big ate Penelope!" Cesca sobs, swinging her sword frantically to keep invisible outstretched fingers at bay. Her eyes are a window to nothing. As if she's curled into herself as she screams to you. "You need to—"
You're about to ask what the hell she's talking about.
But then you see it:
Climbing.
No, crawling through the trees, running like a rabid dog through the branches to eye up its prey.
A titan.
In comparison to other titans, it's practically a sun spot.
And it's so fast.
Eleven meters tall. Maybe thirteen.
You can't tell when its crouched like that.
Deformed.
Curled in on itself.
Then it halts when it sees you, blocking you from the rest of Miro squad.
A chill runs up your spine.
You stop to balance against the side of a tree trunk, staring face-to-face with your first Abnormal.
Its grin is something straight out a nightmare.
Its eyes track you, as if it...
As if it hopes you’ll flinch and begin the chase.
Shit.
You can't get around it.
You're stuck here — but the other five aren't.
Trina, Miro, find Captain Levi,” you force yourself to speak, unable to look away from the Abnormal. “Take your squad north. Tell them you found an Abnormal."
“But—”
“I said go north, damn it,” you growl, clenching your teeth.
"What about you?" Miro asks.
“I'll be right behind you," you promise, though you damn well know you can't run straight through with your gear.
Why isn’t this titan attacking you?
Is it just waiting for you to run first?
Dedicate your heart.
No — this thing isn't going to kill you.
Max is dead. Penelope is dead.
But you came just in time to save five others.
You can save them, yourself, and this mission.
No, you won't die.
Not today.
“Go!”
Shouting at the top of your lungs, the Abnormal finally dives to attack you.
Only when you swing past it do you realize it was waiting — not for you, no, but for an eight-meter and ten-meter with blood all over its mouth to catch up.
Not one, but three Abnormals.
Shit.
Miro and Trina gather Orin, Cesca, and Rini.
All five swing through the trees back towards where you just came from.
In the meantime, you exhaust your efforts through intense ODM defensive maneuvers to avoid getting caught in the clutches — or teeth — of the three titans.
They chase after you, using the trees to their advantage.
It's no use.
You can't outrun all three.
So you'll have to fight these assholes to find a way out.
Turning abruptly, you side-step the lurching ten-meter reaching out towards you.
With a battle cry from the gut, you scream and slice straight through the nape of its neck.
Steam emits as it gurgles and stumbles, effectively dying on the forest floor.
One down.
Three to go.
You set your sights on the smaller titan first, gliding and sliding through the trees.
(The eleven-meter titan will be your greatest problem. You choose to make it your final priority.)
When you flip in the air, crown pointed to the ground and feet in the air, you can no longer see the bodies of Miro squad.
Only a faint trail of their gas fumes linger.
It’s just you, and the things that want to kill you.
But you won't die today.
No, you are not dying in this fucking forest.
Because you promised him.
Skating across a large tree trunk, you swan dive in the air and reattach your gear to opposite tree trunks, sights locked on the eight-meter titan.
The eight-meter monster stares directly at you, but you use its shoulder to lodge your spike directly into its flesh.
The momentum of the swing offers enough brutality to effectively rip into the nape of its neck, causing titan blood to splatter all over your body.
It stumbles, falling to the forest floor. You remain perched on its shoulder, sword extended.
Two down.
You can do this.
You can finish these titans off and meet up with the team before the mission is over.
It isn’t a lost cause.
Determined to see it through, you turn on the heel of your boot—
With a might crack of its arm, the eleven-meter knocks you clear off of the eight-meter’s shoulder and straight into the tree your gear is already attached to.
Your head hits.
The world turns into stars right before your eyes.
And before you can find yours wits and attack back—
Its fiery palm seizes your body from the tree trunk and squeezes.
The momentum nearly rips your spine in half when the Abnormal grabs you.
You gasp for air, knocked clear from your lungs.
Because you didn’t disengage your ODM line latched into the nearby tree, the sheer force of its grip on you bends your gear, forcing you to ragdoll between the points.
Shit.
The grapple of your gear won’t budge.
It won’t detract.
The jerking movements between the manhandling of the Abnormal and your jammed gear create a perfect storm of injuries.
Pops and crunches trickle up your body, breaking bones upon bones upon bones—
You see white.
The titan cannot get you loose from the tree, and you cannot get loose from it, so you act on pure instinct — with what little strength you have left, it stretches out and around to swipe your sword through the titans hand, narrowly missing your own chest.
One chance, and you took it.
Because not only did the sword cut through the titan, but it split the ODM line keeping you eleven meters in the air.
When you realize you can’t even breathe when the titan lets you go, you know what’s coming.
Weightless and numb of your own pain, you can feel the wind on your face, but your lungs refuse to expand.
They’re trapped from a cracked rib, and you’re out of time.
Something as bittersweet as foolish bravery crawls through your skin, burning it alive:
No one is coming.
You told Miro squad to run.
You defied orders.
—but you promised Levi you wouldn’t die.
(Is this the end of all things, right here?)
The screams and shouts echoing through your mind are not of Levi and Miro squad, no, but of your lost comrades — the ones who experienced the very same hopeless, fleeting feeling of fear right before they went.
You think of ash-blonde hair. Ginger locks.
Were Furlan and Isobel afraid?
When they couldn’t survive the Scouts, when they fought titans, did they look up at the sky just like you?
Did they know it was the end?
Were they worried they disappointed Levi?
Did they think of you, too, the way you're thinking about them?
Would they hate you for what you've done to Levi?
Four pairs of hopeful eyes walked up those Underground City stairs and into this world, yet only one will remain.
I promised.
You open your mouth, but nothing comes out.
No screams.
No sobs.
You reach for the branches, watching the glittering sun through the canopy of trees, but you cannot touch them.
There is nothing you can do.
I’m sorry.
You continue to reach for the sky like you’ll catch on something without strength.
Your adrenaline-addled mind runs through so many memories—
The fighting rings of the Underground City;
The dream of leaving this place;
The feeling of the sun on bare skin;
Him.
Levi Ackerman.
Captain of the Scout Regiment. Humanity’s Strongest.
Your best friend.
The love of your life.
The boy who saved you, over and over, until—
“James!”
Suddenly your body reacts with a pained, strangled gasp.
The beauty of the sun disappears when a dark, oval silhouette overtakes it.
A brilliant shimmer of emerald billows around it.
It twirls and slashes the nape of the eleven-meters neck before pivoting south.
Towards you.
The silhouette nears at supernatural speeds, a trail of gas zipping in its wake—
It’s a man.
His gaze is overtaken by the whites of his eyes.
With how fast he’s descending from the tree tops, it’s a miracle he ducks and dodges every rogue branch.
His black hair is pinned to the sides of his head. The terror is written all over his face.
That face…
Levi.
You can’t speak, but you instinctively reach for his hand.
He grits his teeth, willing his body to fall faster. He breaks a barrier and soars closer to your orbit.
“Stay with me!” Levi shouts, voice determined and strong. “I’ll catch you!”
But you’ve been falling for what feels like hours, and he’s caught you so many times in the past.
When you struggled with ODM gear training, Levi would be the one to spot your fall. Every time, without failure.
But it wasn't his duty to catch you.
It wasn't his duty to come back for you.
He reaches out a hand, teeth clenched, but his fingertips just barely miss yours.
"Shit. C'mon, James, reach!"
He's getting desperate.
You've never seen him desperate.
The ground must be close.
Is it close?
(I’m sorry.)
You wish you could tell him.
You wish you had the strength, the breath, to do so.
(I'm sorry.)
You failed him.
You didn’t listen.
You should have listened.
With what little strength is left in your both, you roll your shoulder forward to send your hand towards his.
Your fingertips touch again, but he can’t quite grasp you.
(But then so many others would have died. An entire squad of seven in a formation of fourteen instead of just three. Isn’t that what the Scouts are supposed to fight for, Levi? Isn’t that why we work so damn hard to achieve this dream for humanity?)
His breath hitches.
His eyes explode.
Because he knows what’s coming, too.
“James!”
A sorrowful breath that should be his name exits your mouth.
(Levi, I’m so sorry. I love—)
The back of your head slams into the ground.
A sickening thud.
A lost gasp of air.
The world goes black.
.
.
.
.
.
  Why did you do it?
Do what?
.
.
.
.
.
  “James!”
A baritone voice shouts your name.
It’s guttural, echoing with desperation. Fear.
.
.
.
.
.
You gave me a second chance.
.
.
.
.
.
The man dives through the trees at an otherworldly pace.
Arms pressed tight to his sides, he expertly zig-zags through an array of branches, propelling his body forward.
His emerald cloak billows from behind in an angelic halo.
As he nears, you can make out the whites of his widened eyes.
Instinctively, your hand reaches for him—
A certain sort of deja vu—
Then it hits.
.
.
.
.
.   Because where you go, I follow.
.
.
.
.
.
Something heavy crashes straight into your body.
Two strong arms envelope you.
A palm cradles the back of your head.
Metallic gear wheezes, straining against its mechanics when your side hits solid ground.
Over and over, you spin at lightning speed.
Whatever holds you does not let go.
— then you collide with something solid, and everything just stops.
Silence.
Dirt kicks up around you in a cloud.
Twin hearts beat against each other.
Slowly you raise your hand to your shoulder—
Reaching—
Until you find his hand.
Your shaking fingers curl over his.

attack on titan characters playing league headcanons
guys im in my final year of my undergrad and i have exams and this is what im doing w my time LMAO
eren (ultimate rage quitter)
eren is the ultimate tryhard. bro mains riven and screams into the group call "i will carry!" he charges into fights like he’s fighting titans, only to get instantly melted. after dying for the fifth time, you can hear him scream into the mike, “i’m not mad, i’m just... passionate! WE GOT THIS GUYS DONT GIVE UP” while furiously typing “ff 15” in chat.
mikasa the overprotective bodyguard
mikasa is the ultimate support, but she’s less about healing and more about throwing daggers at anyone who dares touch eren. if someone tries to gank him, she’ll sprint across the map like a ninja, yelling, “no one touches my eren!” while simultaneously saving him from certain doom… and then getting herself killed in the process.
armin the strategist (and coward)
armin is the brains of the operation, but he spends half the game hiding in a bush, whispering strategies to himself. when he finally decides to engage, he shouts, “guys! let’s flank them!” only for everyone to be dead by the time he finishes his sentence. he’s basically a walking “how not to play” guide.
sasha the snack master
sasha is the adc, but her real focus is on her snack stash. she’s munching on chips while trying to farm minions and will often say things like, “just one more potato chip before i go back!” she ends up feeding because she can’t resist grabbing a snack during team fights. “i’m just… multitasking!”
connie the confused support
connie thinks he’s playing support, but he keeps accidentally stealing kills with his abilities. when everyone yells at him, he responds with a confused, “but i thought we were playing catch!” he’s just trying to help, bless his little heart.
jean's leadership failures
jean wants to be team captain (literally no one cares) and constantly tries to direct everyone like he’s leading a military operation. “okay, guys! we need a five-man engage!” but when eren charges in solo again, jean just facepalms and mutters, “why do i even try?”
marco the cheerleader
marco is the wholesome cheerleader of the group. he’s always encouraging everyone with phrases like, “good job, team! you can do it!” unfortunately, he gets so distracted by his own positivity that he forgets to ward properly and walks straight into a bush full of enemies. “oops! my bad!”
reiner's tanking fail
reiner plays tank but thinks he’s invincible. he charges into fights yelling, “i’m here to save you!” only to get one-shot by an enemy assassin. his teammates are left screaming, “we needed you alive for that!”
ymir's sneaky shenanigans
ymir plays an assassin and loves sneaking around for picks. she’ll shout things like, “i’m going in!” but then accidentally reveals her position by stepping on a ward. when historia asks her what happened, she just shrugs and says, “it was tactical misdirection!”
annie’s solo queue dominance
annie is a solo queue legend who plays mid-lane like it’s her personal arena. she rolls her eyes at her teammates’ antics and mutters things like, “if you all just let me carry…” she has zero patience for anyone who doesn’t understand how to play properly—and she’ll mute them faster than you can say “teamwork.”
bertolt's unexpected support skills
birthcontrol is surprisingly good at support, using his size as an accidental shield for his teammates. when someone asks how he does it, he just says softly, “i’m just… really good at standing still.” and somehow that works....
erwin's confusing speeches
erwin gives motivational speeches before every match that leave everyone more confused than inspired. “remember: victory is not just about winning; it’s about… uh… being brave?” anywyas by the end of it, everyone is just staring blankly at him while eren types in chat: “can we just play already?”
hange's chaotic jungle adventures
hange plays jungle with chaotic energy that keeps everyone on their toes. they dive into fights yelling, “let’s go! science rules!” but often end up accidentally initiating fights they can’t win. then they die spectacularly the end
levi's silent judgment
levi lurks in the background, silently judging everyone while occasionally throwing out sarcastic comments like, “great job feeding.” when asked why he doesn’t play more often, he simply replies with a deadpan stare: "because i don’t want to ruin my kda." and yet somehow still manages to carry every game when he does play

They did my baby so dirty. He gets so little screentime in season 1 despite being a captain like Hange and Levi and is said to be second only to Levi.
The only time we see him fight, he kills a few titans onscreen, 7 titans offscreen, and then is surprised by the beast titan, who leaves him without ODM gear, paralyzed from the waist down, surrounded by titans, and screaming for help.
RIP my boy, you deserved better

November 1: Happy Birthday to one of the former members of the Survey Corps, Section Commander of Squad Mike (or Miche), and was considered the second strongest in the the Scouts right behind Levi, the Attack on Titan character of Mike Zacharias.

What would push them far enough to kill?
Undertale Sans - Pretty much having really no other choice. Sans is not a killer, he's even one of the most empathetic monsters around. He's against any sort of violence and will always try to talk before anything else. If he has to kill, it's only after being cornered and all his previous attempts went unheard. It's the last solution.
Undertale Papyrus - Unlike what most people think, Papyrus could kill in self-defense or to protect a friend or his family. Very easily, actually, as he has a titanic force that could even knock Undyne's down if he really wanted to. But Papyrus chooses not to use it because his own strength scares him. But that doesn't mean he won't use it if the situation is very urgent and threatening. After all, it's a tactical advantage. No one would expect sweet Papyrus to transform into a warrior in two seconds, which can completely change the issue of a fight. So far, only Flowey is aware of it. It's a secret he intends to keep hidden.
Underswap Sans - Even if he doesn't like that, it happens he has to kill people as a police officer. It's a hard decision to make, with consequences, and being a guy who hates to deal with consequences, Blue will always choose another option if he has the choice. He's quite good at fighting and is often faster than his opponents which helps a lot to disarm someone before they can do more damages.
Underswap Papyrus - He could never. Honey is not a fighter, far from that, and with his anxiety, he could never find the strength to end a life. He's way too empathetic for this, and all sorts of violence makes him sick. Even cornered, he couldn't find the strength to fight back, trying to talk to the last second.
Underfell Sans - He hates that, but he will do it to protect himself or his brother. He killed in the past. He will certainly kill in the future. Red had been hurt too many times to give threatening people a chance because he knows determined people rarely change their mind. Killing before they can is the best he can do. He never kills before someone threatens him or a friend though.
Underfell Papyrus - Underground, he had no limits. Being a target, he didn't have any choice but to kill every person threatening him or his brother, out of fear they make things worse if he let them live another day. A lot of these kills are driven by past traumas of the rare people he trusted and they revealed themselves to be killers in disguise. He promised it would never happen again. On the Surface, he's more reluctant to kill, but he can't help the instincts to kick in once in a while. If he's alone and someone is threatening him, he attacks without remorse.
Horrortale Sans - No, thank you. He's done with all of this. The only reason he could kill is to protect his family, with no hesitation. But most of the time, he's chill. Oak wishes to never kill a human ever again, as it wakes up traumatic memories. He's not the survivor he was Underground anymore, he moved on.
Horrortale Papyrus - He can't kill, not anymore. Willow is deeply traumatized by what he had to do Underground, and the simple sight of blood can send him into a panic attack. He might hurt people in this state, but never to the point of killing them. He refuses to cross that line again. He never wants to hurt someone ever again.
Swapfell Sans - He's a cold-blooded killer. His LV is way too high for him to feel anything anymore when he's taking lives. Since he's still general of the royal guard, he has to kill people and execute some others. That's his job. He doesn't hesitate either to get rid of people that can be a threat to him or his brother. He hates his job, he hates he has to take lives to live a normal life, but what else can he do? His hands are tied.
Swapfell Papyrus - Oh, he can kill when the situation is very desperate and he has no other choice. He's not feeling that much remorse either. Rus grew up thinking murder is a normal way to solve conflicts so... When he can avoid it, he avoids it. If he has no choice, he has no choice. That's life.
Fellswap Gold Sans - He can kill in the blink of an eye. Wine thinks all people against him are possible threats and that it's better to eliminate the threat than wait for it to attack. He doesn't feel any remorse, as he has the higher LV of all skeletons. He's completely disconnected from reality, which makes him so dangerous. To defend himself or his brother, he can do everything. The only reason he's not in prison is because no one managed to arrest him and stay alive longer enough to reach the prison quite honestly.
Fellswap Gold Papyrus - He can defend himself when needed, but he's far from a killer. If he kills someone, it's purely by accident, trying to save himself or his family. He knows how to do it, Wine taught him to survive, but he could never do it willingly, which is mainly the problem and why Wine had to protect him so much Underground. Coffee is just born in the wrong universe.

Parallels and Contrasts between Levi and Eren in "Bad Boy" and "Attack on Titan":
So one thing I find really interesting is the parallel and contrast between Levi and Eren in the two scenes in which we see them kill for the first time, and what it tells us about each of them.
I talk a lot about how Levi isn't naturally inclined toward violence, while Eren very much is, and I think we see that truth play out in how opposing these two scenes are, and how Levi ends up in the opposite position from where he started, and with Eren, vice versa.
In Eren's scene, he seeks out the men who have kidnapped Mikasa, and does so with the express purpose of killing them. Eren is the aggressor throughout the opening pages of this scene.
Tumblr media
He uses manipulation to attack and kill the first man, pretending to be lost and seeking help. He gets the man to let his guard down and then stabs him to death.
Tumblr media
This isn't normal for any child, but most especially one who's grown up with a quiet and stable life the way Eren has, free of violence or brutality of any kind. And yet we see him here take very naturally and easily to taking another human beings life.
Tumblr media
He then uses further, manipulative tactics to draw the second man after him to catch him in an ambush, and we see here that Eren has come prepared. He's fashioned a kind of spear out of a mop, tying a knife to it's end and charging the man with it. This shows premeditation on Eren's part. Again, he came there absolutely planning on killing these men, and had a plan worked out as to how he would go about it. A plan that worked with frightening efficiency.
Tumblr media
He runs the man through and then falls on top of him, taking up his first weapon.
Tumblr media
And then begins to stab him repeatedly and violently, screaming that he's an animal and that he's getting what he deserves.
Now, let's compare this to Levi's scene.
Tumblr media
Levi seeks these men out, too, but it's for a totally opposing reason and with completely different expectations. Levi goes there hoping to retrieve his mother's tea set, but we can see from him immediately getting beaten down that he didn't go into this situation with any, real forethought or plan. One of the men says he tried "sneaking onto a cart headed for the surface", but clearly he was caught, and we can guess that Levi didn't do a very good job of thinking this situation through or trying to be subtle. And, as we'll see in a few pages, he didn't go there at all with any plan of success.
Tumblr media
Levi continues to get the hell beaten out of him, and appears completely helpless, which he is. Compare this to Eren, who easily took out the first man, and then proceeded to do the same to the second, using manipulation and premeditation.
Tumblr media
Levi shows an honestly heartbreaking passivity here, telling the men to give "it" back, meaning his mother's belongings, but again, showing no real plan or initiative towards convincing these men to do as he asks. He continues to be manhandled and talked down to, easily overpowered and unable to do anything as they refuse, and begin talking about selling him as a prostitute. And then the man holding Levi by the hair says "We should make him do the same job as his mother. He might have inherited her talents."
Tumblr media
And finally we see Levi fight back. Only when his mother is spoken badly of does he do this, and we see what happens. Levi's punch is totally ineffectual against the man, and only serves to make him angry, leading to the man beating Levi repeatedly and brutally with his head against the stone ground. It's important to remember, now, that Levi has been raised by Kenny for the last, several years at this point, and taught how to fight by Kenny, a man who makes a sport of taking human life. He's been raised in a world of violence and cruelty and desperation, a marked contrast to the world Eren was raised in, one of mundanity, safety and peace. Eren, who was raised by a doctor, a man of healing, vs Levi, who was raised by an honest to god serial killer, a literal man of death. And yet, it's Eren who shows unusual ability and determination in taking the lives of Mikasa's kidnappers, planning out exactly what he needed to do to succeed, using lies and manipulations to get these men into a vulnerable position and then striking unexpectedly, while it's Levi who gets beaten down and brutalized, because he had no, real, plan, because he went into a situation he couldn't handle, knowing he couldn't handle it. Levi shows no, real cunning here. No cleverness or deception. As he says on the next two pages:

He went into this situation expecting to die, only wanting to "rebel", wanting to "spit on this shitty world", to defy the ugliness of his life and this existence by refusing to give up the only good thing he'd ever had to it, that being this single memory of his mother. He knew he wasn't going to succeed, but he only wanted to stand up to the cruelty of it all, even if that meant dying.
And then Levi's power awakens, sparked by his physical body being put in mortal peril.
And here we see Levi's and Eren's positions flip.

Eren finally lets his guard down, thinking he's taken out all of the bandits, only for Mikasa to tell him that there were three.

And then, not expecting or planning for this, Eren starts to get beaten down. The same thing happens to him here as happened to Levi. He gets kicked in the stomach and immobilized as a result.

But even in this state of being beaten up, and then starting to be choked, we still see Eren struggling and fighting. His face is one of rage and determination, even as he's getting the life choked out of him. And he tells Mikasa "Fight!!". This, again, is a marked contrast to Levi's demeanor of passivity and helplessness while he was being beaten up. Levi was resigned and showed no, real anger until, again, they started talking badly about his mother. And even then, it wasn't enough to keep the fight in him. We see his limp hand against the ground as he begins to be beaten to death, his entire body language one of giving up. Compare this to Eren, who, even as he's being choked to death, stares with absolute hatred and rage at the man with his hands around his throat, as he tells Mikasa again to fight, that if she doesn't fight, they were going to die.

When Levi's power awakens, his mind is flooded with all the power and knowledge of every Ackerman that came before him, and it's THAT, not his own will to survive, that moves his body into action.

Levi says here that he didn't think it was strange that something had happened to him at the time. He talks about a calmness coming over him, and then:

He talks about the idea of what to do just coming to mind suddenly, and him following the instinct of that and acting accordingly.
This was similar to a fight or flight response, without any real, conscious thought to action on Levi's part. He's just doing what his body suddenly knows to do, rooted in his Ackerman lineage, more than anything to do with Levi's actual personality or will.
Again, this is a truly sharp contrast to what we see from Eren, who premeditated the murder of these men. Who went into his encounter with them fully determined and expecting to kill them. He only ended up needing Mikasa's help because he made a mistake, failing to account for the third man. In contrast, Levi would have certainly died if his power hadn't, totally involuntarily, awakened when it did.
It important to see how both these scenes basically play out in reverse, and I think the fact that they do demonstrates how Levi was always a foil to Eren's character, by showing how Eren was always naturally inclined toward violence, always had an affinity for violence, despite growing up in a peaceful life with a loving mother and father, while Levi was very much the opposite, very passive and showing no, real affinity for violence until his power awakened, this despite his growing up in desperate and cruel circumstances, and having spent years with Kenny, a brutally violent man, teaching him everything he knew.
