Welcome to my music moon :3 💖
Or whatever it's just my music journal thingy lol. ♥️
As the header said, I'm Vonnie, a poc transgender woman in her 20s. I'm absolutely obsessed with music, and this blog is just my journal of how I've been enjoying it hehe. 💕
About my ratings:
They are 100% based on how much I enjoyed listening to the song/album, not based on like quality or impact 😗
Anything over 5/10 means I liked it, so 5.5/10 and 7/10 are both good. Below 5/10 means I mostly didn't 😅💔
My average rating of their albums won't be equal to their position on my favorites. I also think of singles, EPs, their most recent work, and just them in general as artists, as well as the impact they might've had on me. Of course I take that into account too, but it wouldn't be fair to place Metallica way lower because of St. Anger yk 😂😭
YES I TAKE RECOMMENDATIONS. 💖
I listen to at least one album on every weekday (usually ♥️)

🎶✨when u get this, list 5 songs u like to listen to, and publish. then, send this ask to some of your favourite followers- or simply answer this for your own, there's no pressure! (positivity is cool)🎶✨
Thank you for the ask!! ✨ some that I've got on repeat right now are:
I LOVE The Spill Canvas with my wholeass heart and I'm so excited they're putting out music again and I'm obsessed with this song right now
I haven't listened to Atreyu since??? 2014??? I had no idea they were still making music until this came across my feed and I love this song and their cover of it is SO GOOD
I'm always a slut for Halsey but this song hits hard. All of their new singles have been good but this one is my fave by far
For those of you who don't know, Starset was my absolute favorite band for like. 8 years before Sleep Token took over. As with Halsey all of Starset's new singles are bangers but Brave New World is still my fave of the three
I've just started listening to Currents semi-recently but I love them and this is probably my favorite song I've heard of theirs so far

My Final Interest of Metal
As a little kid in late 90s, my first small introduction to metal was listening to Test Drive 5's soundtrack on PS1. Fear Factory, Pitchshifter, Gravity Kills and KMFDM. I wasn't obsessed with it early on, but I liked them.
In 2003, I began to introduce some bands like Motley Crue, Static-X, Element Eighty, Rob Zombie, P.O.D., Papa Roach and Evanescence.
In 2004, I listened to Mudvayne, Ministry (eugh), Slipknot, Hatebreed, Rammstein and Nigthwish.
2005, there's Mastodon, Bullet For My Valentine, Avenged Sevenfold, Disturbed, Celldweller, Korn, Linkin Park, Apocalyptica, Finch and I heard lots of 80s heavy metal bands like Judas Priest, Slayer, Metallica, Iron Maiden, etc.
2006, Atreyu, DragonForce, Marilyn Manson, Deftones, Underoath, Epica, Megadeth, Dio, Valient Thorr, etc.
2007, Shadows Fall, Killswitch Engage, Trivium, In Flames, Ozzy Osbourne's Black Rain, As I Lay Dying and Lacuna Coil, etc.
2008, Thought Industry, Coroner, Anacrusis' Screams and Whispers, Protest The Hero, Opeth, Kalmah, After Forever, Ihsahn, diSEMBOWELMENT, Reverend Bizarre, etc.
2009, August Burns Red's Constellations, Ea's II, CKY, Veil of Maya, Napalm Death, Bring Me The Horizon, Devil Sold His Soul, Liferuiner's No Saints, Hurt's Vol. 1, Family Force 5, A Day To Remember, Return to Exile, Thousand Foot Krutch's Welcome to the Masquerade and so on…
Years were passing by with a bunch of metal bands I was so into back then and I couldn't escape it.
In 2012, I noticed Mikael Akerfeldt from Opeth gave up producing metal music in Heritage and he gave his thoughts about metal in FaceCulture interview.
Steven Wilson was not alone on his stance about metal in mid 2000s.
I wish I could have given up metal back in late 2000s or early 2010s, but I was a douchebag to keep me obsessed with metal.
Well, that is until I did stop in 2013 after Atoma's Skylight and Deafheaven's Sunbather.
I moved on back in late 2013.
Whether I heard the metal bands made a new metal album or song in 2014 until this year, they were…
boring.
The last metal album I thought it was so okay lately was Emma Ruth Rundle / Thou's May Our Chambers Be Full.
But still, I'll probably forget it.
Not this post.
At the time I'm writing this, electronic music and darkwave are my current obsession.
Who knows if I made the wrong decision and go back to metal in 2030?
Most likely not. That'd be kinda regressive.
I enjoyed my time to listen to metal music from the 70s to 2013.

The Best Of 2020 As Picked By Members Of Underoath, The Amity Affliction, August Burns Red, Neck Deep, Movements and More
Okay, we know what you’re thinking: Isn’t it a bit of an oxymoron to list the “best” things to come from such a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad year?
While yes, we completely agree with that statement, we would be remiss not to shine a light on all the wonderful things that helped us survive one of the most challenging years in recent memory -- you know, like best album, best song, best movie, etc.
So, as a way to help you count down the end of this miserable year (22 days, 7 hours and 52 minutes to go as of this writing), we’ve completely turned our year-end, best-of list over to the artists we cover on a daily basis. Because let’s face it, as we’ve noted in years past, their opinions are the ones we all really care about, right?
Right.
To check out what members of Underoath, The Amity Affliction, August Burns Red, Neck Deep, Knuckle Puck, Movements, Counterparts, Hatebreed and more have all been obsessing over for the past year or so, be sure to see below. We hope you enjoy this final list as much as we do and wish you all the most peaceful and positive holiday season.
Enjoy!
SPENCER CHAMBERLAIN - UNDEROATH
Best Album of 2020: Tame Impala - The Slow Rush Best Song of 2020: Foster the People - “Lambs Wool” Best Music Video of 2020: Sir Sly - “Material Boy” (also one of the best songs of 2020) Most Underrated Album of 2020: The Chain Gang of 1974 - Honey Moon Drips Best Movie of 2020: Onward Most Binge-Worthy TV Show of 2020: American Horror Story Favorite Internet Moment of 2020: Metal Kenneth Copeland had me cracking up Best Concert You Attended/Played/Watched in 2020: I really enjoyed playing Lost In The Sound of Separation in full for the first time ever and it was our first ever live stream so it was super special and something I’ll never forget The Thing(s) That Helped Get You Through 2020: Writing tons of music, my lady, hiking/working out and my great dane Snoopy 2021 New Year’s Resolution: Put MORE art into the world

The Thing(s) That Helped Get You Through 2020: The return of live sports, specifically baseball and especially football. Fantasy sports have been my 2020 escape. 2021 New Year’s Resolution: I’d like to look on the bright side more. 2020 has been an easy year to focus on the negative. I don’t want to be that way next year (or ever).
KEVIN MAIDA - KNUCKLE PUCK
Best Album of 2020: Tie between HAIM's Women In Music Pt. III or Owen’s The Avalanche or Slow Pulp’s Movey

Most Underrated Album of 2020: Burst by Snarls
Best Movie of 2020: Dang, what movies came out this year? Each year, I gauge the movies I saw by recounting seeing them in theaters, but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I really enjoyed Portrait of a Lady On Fire though and I saw Uncut Gems on New Year’s Day this year, so I’m counting that as well.
Most Binge-Worthy TV Show of 2020: I’m really bad with keeping up with contemporary television, but I am always watching The Sopranos on a loop. I've had so many people tell me this year that they started watching Sopranos because of all the extra time at home, so I loved living vicariously through others watching it for the first time. I’ve also been binging 30 Rock for the first time and it is simply a delight.
Favorite Internet Moment of 2020: Phoebe Bridgers and Maggie Rogers’ “Iris” cover album art.
Best Concert You Attended/Played/Watched in 2020: Back in February, we played at Beat Kitchen in Chicago with Heart Attack Man and One Step Closer to begin the only tour we would do this year. We hadn’t played there in years, but it felt so good to be back in that venue’s atmosphere again.
The Thing(s) That Helped Get You Through 2020: My girlfriend, staying connected with my friends and family, riding my bike around the city, having time to somewhat enjoy summer at home in Chicago and revisiting favorite movies of mine.
2021 New Year’s Resolution: Be kinder to others and kinder to myself.
PATRICK MIRANDA - MOVEMENTS
Best Album of 2020: Punisher - Phoebe Bridgers Best Song of 2020: Too many to pick just one Best Music Video of 2020: “Popstar” - Drake/DJ Khaled Most Underrated Album of 2020: Marigold - Pinegrove Best Movie of 2020: Borat 2 Most Binge-Worthy TV Show of 2020: The Mandalorian Favorite Internet Moment of 2020: Cranberry juice skateboard guy Best Concert You Attended/Played/Watched in 2020: LDB Fest in Louisville Kentucky 2020, BC (before Covid) The Thing(s) That Helped Get You Through 2020: Video games and comfort food 2021 New Year’s Resolution: Let’s be honest, I’m not sticking to any resolutions
BRENDAN MURPHY - COUNTERPARTS
Best Album of 2020: I haven't even heard it yet, but I'm pretty sure it'll be the new Seahaven record. Band fucking rocks and I've been waiting like 6 years for new music.
Best Song of 2020: The 1975 - “If You're Too Shy (Let Me Know)”
Best Music Video of 2020: It's a tie, but I'm gonna have to go with “Spirit Halloween Theme Song” and the follow up “Unleash Your Spirit” both by Nick Lutsko.
Most Underrated Album of 2020: Chamber - Cost of Sacrifice
Best Movie of 2020: I don't think I've watched any movies that came out this year other than the new Borat, so I guess that's my pick by default. It was VERY NICE!! I wish I could marry the movie so the movie could be MY WIFE!! Get it? You get it. We all get it. It's great.
Most Binge-Worthy TV Show of 2020: Again, I've been slacking in terms of newer movies/tv and honestly, I just kinda alternate between watching The Simpsons seasons 3-9 and then watching Kenny Vs Spenny from beginning to end. If you haven't seen KvS, the entire series is on YouTube so please just watch it. I promise it's the best thing to come out of Canada... me being the second best.
Favorite Internet Moment of 2020: When we released the embroidered NLTL hoodie and everyone filled their diapers with shit.
Best Concert You Attended/Played/Watched in 2020: Tough call, but it's gotta be either the Chainsmokers concert in the Hamptons or the biker festival in Sturgis that Smash Mouth played.
The Thing(s) That Helped Get You Through 2020: Alcohol, adopting my cat Kuma and finally being diagnosed with ADD so I could get a Vyvanse prescription.
2021 New Year’s Resolution: Play a single show LMAOOOOOO
OSHIE BICHAR - BEARTOOTH
Best Album of 2020: Bring Me The Horizon - Post Human: Survival Horror Best Song of 2020: Bring Me The Horizon - “Parasite Eve" Best Music Video of 2020: Bring Me The Horizon feat Yungblud - “OBEY" Most Underrated Album of 2020: Silverstein - A Beautiful Place To Drown Best Movie of 2020: Tenet Most Binge-Worthy TV Show of 2020: The Mandalorian Favorite Internet Moment of 2020: Baby Yoda memes Best Concert You Attended/Played/Watched in 2020: Beartooth drive-in show in Oshkosh, WI The Thing(s) That Helped Get You Through 2020: Call of Duty: Warzone 2021 New Year’s Resolution: Stop spending so much money on Star Wars toys

Things that helped you get through 2020: Guitar, video games, hanging with the wife and cat, finishing an album, Atreyu “Carry the Fire” livestream and lots of junk food. 2021 New Year Resolution: Gonna try to have more of that PMA.
MATT BRYNE - HATEBREED
Best Album of 2020: Napalm Death - Throes of Joy In The Jaws Of Defeatism
Best Song of 2020: See question #1. Pick any song from it.
Best Music Video of 2020: I don’t have one. I miss the infant days of MTV when music videos were new, fresh and hypnotizing. I used to sit for hours and wait for the Van Halen “Jump” video to come on. So, I’ll go with that music video for this question. Can I do that?
Most Underrated Album of 2020: Hum - Inlet
Best Movie of 2020: The Mandalorian series. I rarely watch full movies anymore. It’s all about getting sucked into a TV series.
Most Binge-Worthy TV Show of 2020: Can’t choose only one. The Queen’s Gambit, The Mandalorian, Living With Yourself, Dead To Me…
Favorite Internet Moment of 2020: Anything posted on kookslams. I could surf that Insta account all damn day!!!
Best Concert You Attended/Played/Watched in 2020: None. We have all been stuck at home. So, best attended/played/watched is me, myself and I crushing it on my basement practice jams. Or falling down the rabbit-hole watching drum solos or drum clips on youtube.
The Thing(s) That Helped Get You Through 2020: 1- I got married in May so that was a huge event that we made happen and enjoyed, given the current craziness. Couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful day. 2- Our dog, Ziti. He is a constant source of entertainment. 3- Yoga. 4- Ripping around on my mini-bike.
2021 New Year’s Resolution: Drink more water. Spend less time looking at my phone. Get back to playing shows again!!!
SAM BOWDEN - NECK DEEP
Best Album of 2020: Haim - Women In Music Pt. III
Best Song of 2020: Seaway - “Big Vibe”
Best Music Video of 2020: The 1975 - “The Birthday Party”
Most Underrated Album of 2020: I don’t really know what’s underrated and I’ve not listened to a bunch this year but Knuckle Puck 20/20 is a great album that people should go check out if they haven’t already.
Best Movie of 2020: The Trial of the Chicago 7
Most Binge-Worthy TV Show of 2020: Schitt’s Creek. Although this wasn’t strictly all released in 2020, the final season was and I hadn’t seen any before this year. It was amazing and I definitely binged the whole thing. Final season is a tear jerker for sure. Best Concert You Attended/Played/Watched in 2020: Well like most people in music we didn’t get to play a show this year, however, I did attend a Counterparts show in Feb at Rock City which ruled! Static Dress were also on the tour so was great getting to finally see them!
The Thing(s) That Helped Get You Through 2020: Call of Duty - Warzone. Can’t say I’m proud about this one but It helped pass time if nothing else. More serious though, I bought my girlfriend a kitten a few months ago and he’s been a bundle of joy for us. 2021 New Year’s Resolution: Enjoy the little things. This year took a lot of normality out of life and it’s given me a lot of time to reflect and look back on things I’ve done and we’ve done as a band. It’s easy to get caught up and just be thinking about what’s next and not really live in that moment, so next year I’ll be savoring every moment and every show we get.
NICK VENTIMIGLIA - GRAYSCALE
Best Album of 2020: This is so tough but I think Deftones’ Ohms is my favorite album of the year.
Best Song of 2020: I really don’t know if I can pick one but my most listened to was “The Spell of Mathematics” by Deftones
Best Music Video of 2020: I absolutely loved the Bring Me the Horizon video for “Parasite Eve.” But also, the “Ohms” video by Deftones was unreal as well.
Most Underrated Album of 2020: There really are a few I believe. It was a very weird year to put out a record so I think a TON of albums flew under the radar which is a bummer because there was so much great music put out. I think Four Year Strong's Brain Pain was amazing and their best album to date. I think Hundredth’s Somewhere Nowhere was unreal. Rich People put out Harmony in August and I absolutely love that record and those boys. The Killers put a record out called Imploding the Mirage that has some absolute heaters on it as well. The Ghost Inside made a wild comeback with Aftermath that makes you want to go ape shit front to back. Finally, I’d say The Used made an amazing album that caught them right back up with making great music. Not that they didn’t on the previous records, but it feels like they found themselves again. They pushed a lot of boundaries on Heartwork and had some insane songwriting on that record.
Best Movie of 2020: To be honest, I didn’t really watch many new movies this year. The Social Dilemma was super eye-opening and very true. If you dig creepy thrillers, The Devil All the Time was probably top for me. A ton of great actors and just such an eerie vibe in the cinematography.
Most Binge-Worthy TV Show of 2020: I feel like the easy answer is Tiger King, but I really dug The Queen’s Gambit and The Undoing as of late.
Favorite Internet Moment of 2020: I hate the internet really, there is just so much bullshit overload that I can’t even process it all. With that said, when Joe Exotic threw on his EMS jacket when his employee got her arm bit off by a tiger, THAT was UNREAL. I was crying laughing. This man had this jacket for a moment like this. He is wearing this EMS bomber with king tight white jeans, a true fashion icon. The memes that followed were priceless. The “I am never gunna financially recover from this…” memes. So great.
Best Concert You Attended/Played/Watched in 2020: I would have to say the best show I attended this year was the Dashboard Confessional anniversary shows in Detroit. It was back to back nights where Chris played 'The Places You Have Come to Fear the Most’ and ‘A Mark, A Mission, A Brand, A Scar.’ in their entirety. He did some older stuff as well off of the ’So Impossible' EP and ‘Swiss Army Romance’ which rocked. Best show we played would have to be on our headliner earlier this year. We played The Observatory in Santa Ana, CA and it was unreal. Best watched show was probably the Puscifer live stream or the Underoath stream.
The Thing(s) That Helped Get You Through 2020: I think it was the ability to write more than we usually are able to and kind of tighten up the behind the scenes aspects of Grayscale that people don’t often see. Beyond that, being able to spend time with loved ones and family has been great. It’s been a great year for self reflection as well and I feel like that’s always a good thing when you can get a fresh perspective on life when things get shaken up. I’ve been super thankful even more so this year for the people I have in my life and the opportunities I’ve been given. Those are some of the big things that got me through.
2021 New Year’s Resolution: Honestly, I am not much of a resolution guy, but I’d say just give my all to everything I am passionate about and treat everyone with love. Playing shows in 2021 would be absolutely ideal for a resolutions well.
JULIET SIMMS
Best Album of 2020: Starbenders - Love Potions Best Song of 2020: “You About To Lose Your Job” Best Music Video of 2020: In This Moment - “As Above So Below” Most Underrated Album of 2020: Creeper - Sex, Death and the Infinite Void Best Movie of 2020: Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey Most Binge-Worthy TV Show of 2020: Queen’s Gambit Favorite Internet Moment of 2020: Ocean Spray Fleetwood Mac guy. Best Concert You Attended/Played/Watched in 2020: uhhhhh - welcome to hell. I attended exactly one concert this year and that was a live stream for BVB. The Thing(s) That Helped Get You Through 2020: Music, YouTube, good shows, my babe, my pets and staying busy. 2021 New Year’s Resolution: To get the fuck out of the house 😂. On a more music related note - put my album out ✨
OLLIE BAXXTER - BROADSIDE
Best Album of 2020: Into the Raging Sea by Broadside Best Song of 2020: “Watermelon Sugar” by Harry Styles Best Music Video of 2020: “Parasite Eve” - Bring Me The Horizon Most Underrated Album of 2020: Into the Raging Sea by Broadside Best Movie of 2020: Palm Springs Most Binge-Worthy TV Show of 2020: 90 Day Fiancé Favorite Internet Moment of 2020: Anything involving our EX president Best Concert You Attended/Played/Watched in 2020: *one long sigh* The Thing(s) That Helped Get You Through 2020: My miniature dachshund puppy and books 2021 New Year’s Resolution: Never take seeing someone's whole face for granted again

MAX BREMER - KINGDOM OF GIANTS
Best Album of 2020: Man there’s a few really good ones that make it so hard to choose. I really enjoyed Loathe’s I Let It In And It Took Everything but I gotta shout out Like Moths to Flames’s No Eternity in Gold and Bring Me The Horizon’s Post Human for sure.
Best Song of 2020: Another insanely hard question! I guess I’m gonna say “Teardrops” by Bring Me The Horizon but again I’m gonna also shout out “Animals” by Architects
Best Music Video of 2020: “Teardrops” by Bring Me The Horizon. If you couldn’t tell I’m a big fan of them haha
Most Underrated Album of 2020: Idk if I’d say it’s underrated but I absolutely loved Make Them Suffer’s How to Survive a Funeral
Best Movie of 2020: I haven’t even seen it yet, but I know it’s gonna be Tenet
Most Binge-Worthy TV Show of 2020: Lovecraft Country
Favorite Internet Moment of 2020: There’s so many it’s hard for me to retain any of them. I can’t keep track.
Best Concert You Attended/Played/Watched in 2020: Well my band sold out every show we played this year which was only one haha but for real it was an awesome time and I love hearing our lyrics screamed back at us.
The Thing(s) That Helped Get You Through 2020: My wife, our new daughter, Indi, and our album PASSENGER 100%
2021 New Year’s Resolution: My wife and I just had our first daughter so it’s gonna be to be the best father I can possibly be and write as many songs as possible until we can rip shows again.

PETER BRUNO
Best Album of 2020: Poppy - I Disagree. While critics might write this off as a unique, albeit kitsch blending of genres, this record is one of the more satisfying emotional journeys I’ve been on in quite some time. Poppy is able to capture a strange sort of sadness within these songs, that ironically, is often read as mere jouissance. Best Song of 2020: Poppy - “Sick of the Sun” Best Music Video of 2020: Run The Jewels - “Ooh La La” Most Underrated Album of 2020: Sound VVitch - Becoming. Imagine taking something like Chelsea Wolfe but leaning more into an experimental direction that is both sonically beautiful and grotesque. Best Movie of 2020: I’m Thinking of Ending Things, directed by Charlie Kaufman. It’s a shame that a lot of movies got pushed back this year. I think because of this, I didn’t wind up watching many movies from 2020, instead I used the pandemic to try to catch up on films from the past that I never seem to find time for. Still, I’ve come to really appreciate the journey that Kaufman seems to always insist on taking me. Most Binge-Worthy TV Show of 2020: Admittedly, I also haven’t watched a ton of new TV shows this year. But, there were both new seasons of Curb Your Enthusiasm and The Eric Andre Show, which always finds a way to make me happy. However, in terms of 2020 itself, I did finally watch The Sopranos for the first time and it completely lived up to the hype. Just an incredible TV show all around. I also binge watched all of Tim Heidecker’s On Cinema at the Cinema, which is quite the ride. There’s a whole cinematic universe for that TV show, it’s insane. I give it five bags of popcorn. Favorite Internet Moment of 2020: Conner O’Malley’s video where he learns how to communicate with trains got me pretty good. Best Concert You Attended/Played/Watched in 2020: I thought the Code Orange live stream acoustic set was pretty neat. The Thing(s) That Helped Get You Through 2020: Marijuana and Magic The Gathering. 2021 New Year’s Resolution: Try not to die.
LAUREN KASHAN
Best Album of 2020: 1. High Road - Kesha. Basically, Kesha wrote an incredibly intense, emotional and fucking hilarious album about living her truth and telling all her haters to eat a dick and that’s really all I’ve ever needed in life.
2. “WAP” burned twelve times onto a CD-R from Best Buy. This one fucking song is a better album than 95% of anything I’ve ever heard and I’m a huge fan of anything related to black women kicking ass and taking names, sex and kink positivity, and insanely clever and funny lyrics. Plus, ANYTHING that makes weak, sexist, insecure men as BIG MAD as this song did is literally my kink.
Best Song of 2020: “My Own Dance” - Kesha.
Best Music Video of 2020: “Say Nothing (In The Absence Of Content).” Fuck anyone who disagrees, that shit is iconic. Second runner up goes to “The Gray” because Peter made that whole fucking video himself and it’s POWERFUL and I still cry every single time I watch it.
Most Underrated Album of 2020: Vagina Witchcraft’s self titled record. If you didn’t already notice, I’m pretty fucking done with listening to cis straight white dudes be ANGERY for half an hour; so this album is SUCH a breath of fresh air in a genre that’s become incredibly boring and derivative as of late. Listen to Vagina Witchcraft for sonically inventive, sludgy hardcore, bone-chilling vocal delivery and lyrics that are simultaneously calculated yet raw, and that ACTUALLY FUCKING SAY THINGS THAT ARE IMPORTANT AND RELEVANT AND SO FUCKING URGENT RIGHT NOW.
Best Movie of 2020: Miss Americana - The Taylor Swift documentary. One of the most validating things I’ve ever watched in my life and I ugly cried though the whole thing. I fucking love that woman. Most Binge-Worthy TV Show of 2020: I don’t watch TV… Does a YouTube series about voice actors playing D&D count? If so, my answer is Critical Role. Don’t try to binge it though, each episode is like 4 hours and there’s over a hundred episodes.
Favorite Internet Moment of 2020: Hardcore twitter taking my band way too seriously and as a result of their own hubris, accidentally blowing up our music video and record release, and getting us exponentially more attention than we would have if those losers would just finally learn to fuck off and leave us alone! NICE GOING MOTHERFUCKERS I OWE YA ONE! *blows a kiss* Also, everything Lizzo did. DID YOU SEE HER “FLY IN MIKE PENCE’S HAIR” COSTUME?!?!
Best Concert You Attended/Played/Watched in 2020: HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA GOOD ONE.
I think the only live music related thing I even went to was a Drum & Bass show back in February in Brooklyn with Dimension, Sub Focus, and Culture Shock. I danced with my friends and drank Bright Fox. It was a simpler time.
The Thing(s) That Helped Get You Through 2020: D&D, getting a suet feeder to watch birds outside my window and my bootcamp, Launch Academy, with all my brilliant and incredible Boston 30 Cohort-mates. Also, the warm weight of knowing that this coming year, a lot of terrible, evil, abusive people in the world are gonna finally get their comeuppance and I’m making popcorn with EXTRA salt.
2021 New Year’s Resolution: Ohhhh I’m not going to spoil the surprise for you! But let’s just say I’m planning on using my new superpowers as a full stack software engineer, combined with my old superpowers as a vindictive and enraged bitch who hates rapists, to make the world a safer and more just place.

Which types of music or which artists do you listen to?
Hi anon! A short answer to that would be to check out my sidebar on my page - back when Last.FM was relevant they used to have a band logo generator and compiled an image full of band logos for the top bands you would listen to. I’ve kept it ever since.
Longer answer: I was never good at pegging generas. Like I’d call Green Day pop-rock whereas some would throw rocks at me and say punk (early years I can see it, not so much with new stuff). Or Bayside punk and then more rocks would be thrown and I’d be screamed at by people saying ‘they’re not punk they’re screamo’ and I never believed in screamo/emo as a fucking genera of music, period. (and as a side note: screamo and emo always felt like slurs/derogatory comments because of the way people used them around me but apparently now - on tumblr - it’s become a term of endearment? and it just doesn’t sit well with me).
Anyway - I guess pop-rock, rock, hard rock, pop-punk, what isn’t quiet metal IMO but is harder than hard rock so idk what to call it, and whatever the combo of rap and rock is called. Mostly. Like when a recipe calls for ‘a pinch of’ I’ve too got a pinch of hip-hop, indie, and garbage (I call it garbage because what the fuck am I doing? lol)
Toppers: The Used, Bayside, Fall Out Boy, Linkin Park, Green Day. Pretty Solid top 5.
Some oldies like Styx, the Kinks, Cher, Helen Ready, Simon and Garfunkel, Don Henley, Don McLean and Gordon Lightfoot and god I didn’t realize how many there are because there’s a lot more. All are leftovers from when my mom was in control of all the music.
Then there’s MY “oldies”: Nysnc, Britney Spears, Christina Aguleria (i’m too tried to spell it so i hope thats right), Backstreet Boys, S Club 7, Aaron Carter, and every disney song ever. They’re still on my iPod and I’m not ashamed. They make me happy.
There’s the bands/artists that shaped my music taste during my music-awakening back in the early 2000s - Pink, Good Charlotte, Green Day, Sum 41, Linkin Park, My Chemical Romance, Blink-182, AFI, Alkaline Trio, Fall Out Boy, Panic! At the Disco, The Used, The Ataris, New Found Glory, Yellowcard, Anberlin, 30 Seconds to Mars, and Avril Lavigne.
There’s the bands that filled in my ‘somewhat harder/more screamier music faze’: UnderOath, Atreyu, Avenged Sevenfold, Saosin, Aiden, From First to Last, Bullet for my Valentine, Breaking Benjamin, and a few others I’m probably forgetting because I don’t really listen to them anymore except for Atreyu (and I would A7X but my opinion of them was kinda thrown into the fucking mud and beat to death around 07 and never quite recovered).
There’s the bands that came to me during my “I wanna be Bam Margera times”: CKY, HIM, The Rasmus, Bloodhound Gang, The 69 Eyes being the most prominent ones.
There’s the bands I used to obsess over in my late teens and no longer want to hear anymore of: Mindless Self Indulgence, LostProphets (because I just keep remembering their singer was a disgusting pedo and it’s ruined everything).
There’s the newbies: Twenty One Pilots, Icon For Hire, HAMILTON (which counts because it owns me), Arctic Monkeys, Starset, Imagine Dragons, Julia Michaels, Bastille.
There’s the super guilty pleasures: Demi Lovoto, Selena Gomez, a couple of Taylor Swift and Justin Bieber songs that I can tolerate, 1 One Direction song. A few Carrie Underwood thanks to my sister.
There’s the stuff my BFF got me into and hates that I don’t like them as much as she does since she’s pretty much abandoned everything except the bands listed below and ‘super unknown local un-signed bands’ because apparently she turned into a hipster with her music or something: Hollerado, Born Cages, A Silent Film, Foxy Shazam, Mother Mother, the Architects, Paper Tongues.
There’s whatever Hollywood Undead is but I’ve been listening since No. 5 was the only thing on their myspace and god knows why I keep coming back (because they keep getting better). lol
A fuck ton of musicals, too.
Now, this is by no way a full list. I’ll probably read through this later and kick myself in the ass screaming HOW COULD YOU HAVE FORGOT TO MENTION HOW OBSESSED YOU WERE WITH THREE DAYS GRACE? or BUT BRAND NEW SHOULD BE ON THAT LIST, TOO. or WHAT ABOUT RISE AGAINST OMFG I CAN’T BELIEVE YOU ALMOST FORGOT TO MENTION THEM.
See it’s starting already. lol
But that’s a VERY LONG AND GENERAL OVERVIEW.
Ignoring the tone of the entire thing (I just woke up and to me all of this sounded funny when I wrote it tho maybe doesn’t come across that way) music means a lot to me. I’m guessing this was brought on by my Chester Bennington post (though maybe not I’m just making an assumption) and I have posted ad nauseam about having a PERSONAL ESSAY PLAYLIST of over 120 songs that I feel could have been written about me, personally, because I relate to them so hard. Music is how I connect with other people. Truly connect with them. So if you (or anyone else) ever wants to come back and talk music with me PLEASE do. Because I can only connect so much through other media (games/tv/movies) but MUSIC is where it’s at for me. Music is what fills my bones and makes me so emotional to a point where I almost feel like the force is real and it’s fucking tearing me apart because IDK what to do with it. LOL
(side note - star wars made official playlists for all the characters and i want EVERY franchise to do that because, like I said - it’s how I connect, and omg they’re wonderful. And for the record OBVS my music taste is a combo of Anakin and Kylo with a sprinkle of everyone elses for the most part.)

10 Old School Movies Your Kids Will Love
Alternate Title: Enough With the Frozen on Repeat!
It is finally SUMMER! You know what that means? Sunshine and flip flops, baseball and softball (at least in our house), an easy schedule and extended bed time.
Also – MOVIE NIGHTS.
Looking for some retro-cool film ideas for your next family movie night? Searching your public library, NetFlix, AppleTV or the on-demand movie banks of your cable provider for a movie you enjoyed as a kid.
10 Old School Movies Your Kids Will Love
These flicks from my own 1980’s childhood and 1990’s teenage years have been huge hits with my own kids and teens I love. Additionally, these options are a welcome replacement for Frozen, Teen Beach Movie, and other movies your kids have on constant repeat.
Old School Movies for Kids
The Swan Princess (1994)
Great for: Princess-obsessed little ones and animation lovers.
If your kids thought Do You Want to Build a Snowman? was clever, have your kids listen to the opening song, This Is My Idea that spans the kindergarten through teen summers of a prince and princess. The story is based upon the ballet Swan Lake, but with talking animals and vengeful sorcerers, there is nothing frilly about this adventure-filled tale.
The Mighty Ducks (1992)
Great for: Sporty smart alecs.
Sweet kids, Emilio Estevez in his prime, cheesy one-liners, teamwork and loads of laughs. And quacks. If your kids like the first one, have a movie marathon with D2 and D3. Even Buzzfeed calls The Mighty Ducks the “greatest movie franchise of all time.”
Swiss Family Robinson (1960)
Great for: Movie night when the grandparents are in town.
An oldie but a total goodie, this Disney movie representation of the classic book may look a little dated to little eye, but the story is never boring. Kids will love the Rube-Goldberg contraptions the family constructs for their treehouse, and may recognize it from trips to Disneyland and Walt Disney World.
Nadia (1984)
Great for: Gymnasts and Olympic dreamers.
This made-for-TV biopic about the rise of young Romanian gymnast Nadia Comaneci was a huge hit the summer of 1984. This was when Mary Lou Retton dominated the Olympic games and had every little girl in America begging for gymnastics classes. The choreography and Rocky-for-kids story still captivates today.
The Neverending Story (1984)
Great for: Bookworms and fantasy-files
For the kid who always has her nose in a book, there is no better adventure tale than the parallel stories of Bastian and Atreyu. Suitable even for very young kids, the perfect pacing of the story will draw in the big kids, too.
The Sandlot (1993)
Great for: Tweens with a close-knit neighborhood crew.
The movie is a little about baseball, a bit about growing up in the early 1960’s, but mainly it is about making friends and finding your tribe. Warning: the kids do get into lots of mischief and trade insults, so parental guidance is advised.
Summer Magic (1963)
Great for: Tweens who are dipping their toes into boy-girl romance themes.
Did you go through a major Hayley Mills period as a child? I sure did, and while The Parent Trap and Pollyanna will always occupy a soft spot in my heart, my favorite movie was Summer Magic. Set in 1917, it tells the story of a widow and her children who must move from New York City to the country in Maine. With cute songs sung by Burl Ives (the kids may recognize the voice from the Rudolph movie) for the little ones and some light boy-girl liking for the tweens and teens, this is a super summer choice for everyone in the house.
Crash Course/Driving Academy (1988)
Great for: Teens taking driver’s ed in the near future.
This hard to find but easy to love made for TV movie was a legend in my house growing up. Featuring Alyssa Milano, Jackée, Tina Yothers and other late eighties TV stars, it is beyond cheesy and a riot to watch. I found this in the on-demand section of my cable provider under free teen movies and my kids cracked up the entire time. Search for it under both names, “Crash Course” and “Driving Academy.”
The Last Starfighter (1984)
Great for: Your resident gamer and teenager who loves the original Star Wars films better than the new ones.
What if your favorite video game was actually a training program for pilots on another planet? That is the premise of this kooky sci-fi teen movie. The soundtrack is also great and may be of interest to dedicated band and orchestra musicians.
Grease 2 (1982)
Great for: High school students who have outgrown the Disney teen movies.
I am partial to Grease 2 over the first Grease film. It is sweeter, goofier and more appropriate for teens…save the raunchy song “Reproduction”, which you can always fast forward through. And of course, Michelle Pfieffer singing Cool Rider. (Mic drop.)
What is YOUR favorite old-school movie from your childhood that you can’t wait to share with your kids?
And – if you need a few additional weekend fun family tips – we have you covered.

Here’s The Best of 2018 As Picked By Your Favorite Bands
Well everybody, we did it. In two short weeks, 2018 will be over and we will all have somehow survived yet another 365 days on this earth. Now instead of using this space to talk about how shitty of a year it has been (because trust us, we could certainly sound off right now) we’d instead like to use this opportunity to shine a light on some of the finest things to come out of 2018 -- you know, like best album, best song, best movie, etc.
Like we’ve done in years past, instead of pretending to be the hip tastemakers and trendy influences like other websites, we’ve completely turned our year-end best-of list over to the artists we cover on a daily basis -- because let’s face it, their opinions are the ones we really care about, right?
Right.
So to check out what bands like Memphis May Fire, Fit For A King, 3oh!3, As It Is, Sylar and more have all been obsessing over for this past year, be sure to see below. We hope you love the final list as much as we do and we wish you all the most relaxing and positive holiday season.
Enjoy!
Best Album of 2018:
Matty Mullins of Memphis May Fire: Dan + Shay - Dan + Shay Ryan Kirby of Fit For A King: RITUALS - Deaf Havana Nat Motte of 3oh!3: Chrome Neon Jesus - Teenage Wrist Ira George of Movements: Technology - Don Broco Cody Quistad of Wage War: Dan + Shay - Dan + Shay Jay Forrest and Josh Brigham of Hopesfall: Honey - Robyn Ben Langford-Biss of As It Is: Thank You for Today - Death Cab for Cutie Jayden Panesso of Sylar: Beerbongs and Bentleys - Post Malone Tyler Riley of Gideon: If I Know Me - Morgan Wallen Adrian Estrella of Assuming We Survive: Technology - Don Broco Palisades: Prequelle - Ghost Matt Gravolin of Hellions: Stranger in the Alps - Phoebe Bridgers Calling All Captains’ Nick Malychuk & Luc Gauthier: Proper Dose - The Story So Far Tyler Levenson of Afterlife: Welcome To The Neighbourhood - Boston Manor Camm Knopp of Never Loved: Time & Space - Turnstile + Proper Dose - The Story So Far (it’s a tie sorry) Patrick Hamilton of Vanish: Come Over When You’re Sober pt.2 - Lil Peep Vagrants: When The End Began - Silent Planet Household: Nearer my God - Foxing Daniel Nelson of LIMBS: Bad Witch by Nine Inch Nails is the best album of the year in my opinion. I am heavily into Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’ work and I just love that they went for a totally different sound and vibe with Bad Witch compared to all the NIN records prior. They blend modern jazz with industrial, chaotic synthscapes and it’s absolutely wild.
Best Song of 2018:
youtube
Matty Mullins of Memphis May Fire: "Better Now" by Post Malone Ryan Kirby of Fit For A King: “Hereafter” by Architects Nat Motte of 3oh!3: "Swallow" by Teenage Wrist Ira George of Movements: “4Ever” by Clairo Cody Quistad of Wage War: “Tequila” by Dan + Shay Jay Forrest and Josh Brigham of Hopesfall: “Middle America” by Stephen Malkmus and The Jicks Ben Langford-Biss of As It Is: “It’s Not Living (If It’s Not With You)” by The 1975 Jayden Panesso of Sylar: “SAD!” by XXXTentaction Tyler Riley of Gideon: “Slow Burn” by Kacey Musgraves Adrian Estrella of Assuming We Survive: “Better Now” by Post Malone Palisades: “Mantra” by Bring Me The Horizon Matt Gravolin of Hellions: “Please Don’t Die” by Father John Misty Calling All Captains’ Nick Malychuk & Luc Gauthier: “Bodybag” by LIL LOTUS feat. Coldhart Tyler Levenson of Afterlife: “Mo Bamba” by Sheck Wes Camm Knopp of Never Loved: “High Hopes” by Panic! At The Disco (big mood) Patrick Hamilton of Vanish: “Lavender Bones” by Stand Atlantic Vagrants: “Doomsday” by Architects Household: “Keeping Up” by Microwave Daniel Nelson of LIMBS: “On My Teeth” by Underoath. I don’t care what anyone says, they wrote a phenomenal record and knew they would get flak for it. They deserve all the recognition they have been getting because they have been working hard since the beginning. It was so sick to see them get a Grammy nomination too. That was essentially a big middle finger to all of their nay-sayers, whether they win or not.
Best Music Video of 2018:
youtube
Matty Mullins of Memphis May Fire: “This Is America” by Childish Gambino Ryan Kirby of Fit For A King: “Hereafter” by Architects Nat Motte of 3oh!3: "New Light" by John Mayer Ira George of Movements: “Say Something” by Justin Timberlake ft. Chris Stapleton Cody Quistad of Wage War: “Hereafter” by Architects Jay Forrest and Josh Brigham of Hopesfall: “Dark Speed” by Failure Ben Langford-Biss of As It Is: “Sincerity is Scary” by The 1975 Jayden Panesso of Sylar: “SICKO MODE” by Travis Scott Tyler Riley of Gideon: “Aeon” by Crystal Lake Adrian Estrella of Assuming We Survive: “This Is America” by Childish Gambino Palisades: “SICKO MODE” by Travis Scott Matt Gravolin of Hellions: “Sincerity is Scary” by The 1975 Calling All Captains’ Nick Malychuk & Luc Gauthier: “This Is America” by Childish Gambino Tyler Levenson of Afterlife: “SICKO MODE” by Travis Scott Camm Knopp of Never Loved: "New Light" by John Mayer Patrick Hamilton of Vanish: “God Is A Woman” by Ariana Grande Vagrants: “Rose Quartz/Fulton Street I” by La Dispute Household: “thank u, next” by Ariana Grande Daniel Nelson of LIMBS: Childish Gambino’s “This Is America” has gotta be THE best music video of this year. I have nothing but respect for Donald Glover and the way he presented controversial, political topics through all of the blunt, straight-forward imagery throughout that video. He’s never put out anything I haven’t enjoyed front to back.
Most Underrated Album of 2018:
Matty Mullins of Memphis May Fire: Are You Even There At All? - Brent Walsh Ryan Kirby of Fit For A King: Gray States EP - The Material Nat Motte of 3oh!3: Graffiti U - Keith Urban Ira George of Movements: Man of The Woods - Justin Timberlake Cody Quistad of Wage War: Seasons - Sylar Jay Forrest and Josh Brigham of Hopesfall: Holy Hell - Architects Ben Langford-Biss of As It Is: Be More Kind - Frank Turner Jayden Panesso of Sylar: Kids – The Midnight Tyler Riley of Gideon: Hatred Softly Spoken - Chamber Adrian Estrella of Assuming We Survive: In Our Wake - Atreyu Palisades: Come Hell - Dead Crown Matt Gravolin of Hellions: Tranquility Base Hotel and Casino - Arctic Monkeys Calling All Captains’ Nick Malychuk & Luc Gauthier: Blue In The Dark - Bearings Tyler Levenson of Afterlife: When The End Began - Silent Planet Camm Knopp of Never Loved: Some Rap Songs - Earl Sweatshirt Patrick Hamilton of Vanish: Taco - Bilmuri Vagrants: Palms - Thrice Household: Pierre - Pierre [ed note: We have no idea if it’s this or this. Guess you’ll have to decide!] Daniel Nelson of LIMBS: Vince Staples’ FM Radio is very underrated in my opinion. I haven’t seen much about it at all since it dropped and it’s a sick follow up to Big Fish Theory.
Best Movie of 2018:
youtube
Matty Mullins of Memphis May Fire: Bohemian Rhapsody Ryan Kirby of Fit For A King: Upgrade Nat Motte of 3oh!3: Isle Of Dogs Ira George of Movements: Annihilation Cody Quistad of Wage War: Incredibles 2 Jay Forrest and Josh Brigham of Hopesfall: Avengers: Infinity Wars Ben Langford-Biss of As It Is: A Star Is Born Jayden Panesso of Sylar: Avengers: Infinity War Tyler Riley of Gideon: Ready Player One Adrian Estrella of Assuming We Survive: Bohemian Rhapsody Palisades: BlacKkKlansman Matt Gravolin of Hellions: Hereditary Calling All Captains’ Nick Malychuk & Luc Gauthier: Avengers: Infinity War Tyler Levenson of Afterlife: Avengers: Infinity War Camm Knopp of Never Loved: Deadpool 2 Patrick Hamilton of Vanish: The Ritual Vagrants: Avengers: Infinity War Household: BlacKkKlansman Daniel Nelson of LIMBS: Hereditary, hands down. Best story, best character development, best everything. Acting, special effects. EVERYTHING. I don’t wanna give away too much because I want whoever is reading this to watch it for themselves.
Most Binge-Worthy Show of 2018:
youtube
Matty Mullins of Memphis May Fire: Riverdale Ryan Kirby of Fit For A King: Ozark Nat Motte of 3oh!3: Bodyguard Ira George of Movements: The Final Table Cody Quistad of Wage War: Nashville Jay Forrest and Josh Brigham of Hopesfall: Haunting of Hill House Ben Langford-Biss of As It Is: The Innocent Man Jayden Panesso of Sylar: Ozark (Season 2), My Hero Academia Tyler Riley of Gideon: Brooklyn Nine-Nine Adrian Estrella of Assuming We Survive: Vikings Palisades: Haunting of Hill House Matt Gravolin of Hellions: Ozark (Season 2) Calling All Captains’ Nick Malychuk & Luc Gauthier: Brooklyn Nine-Nine Tyler Levenson of Afterlife: Bodyguard Camm Knopp of Never Loved: The Office... duh Patrick Hamilton of Vanish: Haunting of Hill House Vagrants: The Office Household: Better Call Saul Daniel Nelson of LIMBS: If you haven’t seen Wild, Wild Country on Netflix yet, you need to. My girlfriend and I binged through that show with a quickness. What a crazy time it would have been to be alive and living in Wasco County, Oregon when all of that was going down.
Favorite Internet Moment of 2018 (Viral Video, GIF, Meme, etc.):
Matty Mullins of Memphis May Fire: Super Bowl selfie kid Ryan Kirby of Fit For A King: Thanos memes Nat Motte of 3oh!3: This Post Malone / 21 Savage / Nickelback mashup video Ira George of Movements: The Real Bros Of Simi Valley Cody Quistad of Wage War: Moth memes got me pretty good for a while. Jay Forrest and Josh Brigham of Hopesfall: This. Ben Langford-Biss of As It Is: The rise and fall of Mason Ramsey Jayden Panesso of Sylar: “Weird flex, but okay” Tyler Riley of Gideon: Mason Ramsey Adrian Estrella of Assuming We Survive: Don Broco Warped Tour workout video Palisades: Pikachu shocked face Matt Gravolin of Hellions: “Weird flex, but okay” Calling All Captains’ Nick Malychuk & Luc Gauthier: Squished face Lil Xan/moth memes Tyler Levenson of Afterlife: Any and all Casey Frey videos Camm Knopp of Never Loved: Spongebob memes are great Patrick Hamilton of Vanish: The bird Spongebob meme Vagrants: Surprised Pikachu Daniel Nelson of LIMBS: I try not to get too caught up with all of that but the moth memes were pretty great.
Thing(s) You Wish You Had Done in 2018 But Didn't:
Matty Mullins of Memphis May Fire: Exercise lol Ryan Kirby of Fit For A King: Go to the gym more. Nat Motte of 3oh!3: Feeling pretty good about 2018, honestly. I voted and did my civic duty, paid my taxes, toured the country twice, worked hard, treated the people close to me with love and respect and tried to do that with everyone I came across! Ira George of Movements: Eat healthier Cody Quistad of Wage War: Made a million dollars. Jay Forrest and Josh Brigham of Hopesfall: Watch our favorite teams win the Super Bowl. A collectively impossible feat. Ben Langford-Biss of As It Is: Have more rest. Jayden Panesso of Sylar: Wish I stuck to my workout plan like I originally intended to. Tyler Riley of Gideon: Go to Brazil Adrian Estrella of Assuming We Survive: Worked out more, learned how to play the clarinet. Palisades: Cook at home more. Matt Gravolin of Hellions: Procrastinated less Calling All Captains’ Nick Malychuk & Luc Gauthier: Tour the United States of America Tyler Levenson of Afterlife: I have no regrets! 2018 was an incredible year for me. Camm Knopp of Never Loved: Tour more. Vagrants: Travel outside of the USA Household: Hang out with friends and family more Daniel Nelson of LIMBS: Tour with Deftones. Hopefully Chino will read this and maybe consider taking LIMBS out next year?
Bonus Question: 2019 New Year's Resolution:
Matty Mullins of Memphis May Fire: Perform in New Zealand Ryan Kirby of Fit For A King: Play in South America! Nat Motte of 3oh!3: To yet again, not make any resolutions! Ira George of Movements: Eat healthier Cody Quistad of Wage War: Be more healthy: physically and mentally. Write the best songs I’ve ever written. Jay Forrest and Josh Brigham of Hopesfall: Be hardcore. Ben Langford-Biss of As It Is: Have even less rest. Jayden Panesso of Sylar: Play in new continents with Sylar, learn more about engineering music on my own. Q&A: Ice Nine Kills’ Spencer Charnas Talks Horror Movies, ‘The Silver Scream’ and Touring With Atreyu
This interview previously aired on idobi Radio and is for everyone who was too lazy to tune in. Enjoy!
Listen up, everybody. If you’ve yet to check out Ice Nine Kills’ gory, hard-hitting, horror-obsessed LP The Silver Scream then it’s clear you are not living the best Halloween life possible.
With 13 tracks all centered around some of the best horror films including Halloween, Friday The 13th, Saw, Jaws and many more, Ice Nine Kills’ latest release has quickly become an instant October staple around The Noise office.
And now, just one week away from the best holiday of the year (fight us if you don’t agree), we thought it’d be more than appropriate to give you all our interview with Ice Nine Kills mastermind Spencer Charnas as he discusses all things horror, The Silver Scream and their upcoming Noise Presents tour with Atreyu, Memphis May Fire and Sleep Signals.
To check out our chat with Charnas as he details where his horror-fandom came from, the movie he wishes he wrote about on The Silver Scream plus the influence Atreyu had on his band early on in their career, be sure to see below. Afterward, make sure to grab a copy of Ice Nine Kills’ new album and pick up tickets to see the band out on tour here.
With Atreyu being one of the first metalcore bands you started listening to, how does it feel to get to go out and do a full US tour with them?
Spencer Charnas: It’s an absolute honor. You know, being someone in a band that was totally influenced by Atreyu -- I remember when we started to be more metal, Atreyu was 100% an influence on myself, especially the album The Curse. So the fact that Atreyu even knows who we are, let alone wants us to open for them, is just a really big honor. It’s kind of surreal.
Have you gotten to know Atreyu at all over the years?
I met them on Warped Tour 2016 when they were on that tour. I remember Brandon [Saller drums/vocals] watched us some of the days when they were on the tour. You know, we just talked here and there backstage, they were super nice and actually invited me to come out and sing “Lip Gloss and Black” with them on one of the dates. So that was really cool. Other than that, just small talk through Instagram and just telling them I’m really excited about touring with them and they just seem like really nice, genuine guys.
Obviously you have a new record to promote on this tour. Are you guys going to be playing any new songs?
Definitely. We’re probably going to play about five or six new songs from the album.
youtube
Wow, that’s awesome! When it comes to your tours, you guys usually have a good amount of production. For this Atreyu tour, do you guys plan on doing something similar?
Well you know, when you’re a support act you really can’t go all out. There are restrictions on what you can do because you’re not the headliner. But we’re going to do as much as they let us. I think the real production for us and with this album will be saved and reserved for when we can headline.
So let’s talk The Silver Scream. You guys took somewhat of a risk putting so much into this album with the movie-like music videos and the somewhat style change on certain singles. To have all the success it’s had so far, where do you hope that leads to moving forward?
I just really hope that every horror fan that’s out there, or as many as possible who have never heard the band, really embrace this record. From what I’ve seen, from industry people I know or people that are in the horror movie world who aren’t really familiar with the Warped Tour scene or the metalcore scene or even the Octane scene, they’ve just been telling me that they love this album and they love the concept even though they aren’t really well-versed in the world of metal where we come from. And you know, [they’re saying] that [The Silver Scream] is getting them into this kind of music, so that’s really good to hear. At the end of the day, I think our number one goal is to please the people who have been with us for a long time, that have supported the band through thick and thin and we just want to give them something special. That’s the number one goal.
youtube
So with all of the songs on The Silver Scream having some sort of a horror movie tie-in, which song do you think was the hardest to fit with a movie?
I think they all presented their own challenge, I don’t think I can narrow it down to just one. But speaking generally, one of the biggest challenges was making a song, whether it’d be [based off the] Halloween or Friday the 13th franchise, and giving a voice to a character that never speaks. That was just challenging in itself. Some of the characters, be it Eric Draven from The Crow or Freddy Krueger from Nightmare on Elm Street, those are characters that speak and have a voice and it’s very clear what their personality would be if they were singing, in my opinion. But there’s also Michael Myers who never utters a word through all his films. So just kind of playing with that and trying to figure out how to throw my voice in a way that is different and distinct in trying to give each character on the album their own voice was challenging. I think probably the most difficult one if I had to pick was Pennywise from IT. You know, because that’s a character that goes from a jovial clown voice that has to entice a little kid into the sewer system in order to bite off his arm. And then, from being jovial and happy as a clown to switching to basically the devil who eats kids was a difficult challenge but it was fun to play with.
Do you think you guys would have still done “IT Is The End” had the new IT not come out? Do you think seeing the remake helped inspire you?
I’m not really sure. I’ve always been a fan of the original. I think Tim Curry in that original film was brilliant. I believe the guy that directed the original, Tommy Lee Wallace, was very involved in the Halloween franchise directing Halloween III. So I’m just really a fan of that and I really think the new one honestly lived up to the hype. I thought it was beautifully executed, you know with Tim Curry, those are some big clown shoes to fill and Bill Skarsgard is just great. And yeah, I think it brought it back on my radar, not that it ever really left, but it kind of just kicked it up a bit.
Speaking of remakes, are you excited for the new Halloween?
Oh man! To say I’m excited would be a large understatement. I absolutely can’t wait. Everything I’ve heard about it is so great.
You don’t think it will flop like some of the newer Halloweens?
You know, I’m sort of a big fan of the franchise as a whole -- there’s only a couple that I’m not really a fan of. But you know, just based on what I’m seeing as far as studio projections and just the all-around hype on the film and the fact that Jamie Lee Curtis is back and John Carpenter is involved and doing the score, I don’t know, I don’t think it can miss. And from what I’ve heard, the reviews have been overwhelming that this is a sequel that finally lives up to the original.
And speaking of the Halloween franchise, you recorded some vocals for The Silver Scream at the Michael Myers house, right?
Yeah, I took advantage of the fact that I live in West Hollywood now and I went and recorded some of the vocals, some of the small post-production stuff, on the properties of the Michael Myers house in Pasadena and 1428 Elm Street -- the house from Nightmare on Elm Street which is technically not really on Elm Street but it is the actual number 1428 just like the iconic number from the series.
That’s cool! How did you set that up? You just went and did it?
I just went and did it and hoped no one called the cops [laughs].
youtube
So back to The Silver Scream, were there any movies that you wanted to write a song about but it just wasn’t able to make the record?
Yeah, you know one of my favorite horror movies and favorite films of all time is Scream. I definitely wanted to get that one on the record but it just wasn’t coming out to my standards and the last thing I want would be a song based on my favorite movie to not be my favorite song ever written. So unfortunately we didn’t get that ready in time but we do pay tribute to the great, late Wes Craven with [”The American Nightmare”]. So I was happy that we could get a Wes Craven influence on the album because he’s so great and we love his work.
You guys have a lot of guest features on this new record. Was that a goal coming into the writing process or did that happen organically?
It kind of happened organically. You know, when I locked in one feature I was like “Man, this is so cool!” The first feature that I sort of had the idea was Randy [Strohmeyer] from Finch. Finch is one of my favorite bands [who is] very inspirational to my writing. And I recently became friends with him and getting him on the album was really cool. Then I met Fenix TX when we were on tour in London and I struck up a friendship with those guys and went out to write with the singer Will [Salazar] and then told him how the song came out so cool [so we] got him to sing on it. And then Tony [Lovato] from Mest, another one of my favorite pop-punk bands. And then, when we were working on the song about IT, it just had this like circus flare and we were like, “Man, wouldn’t it be so cool to get Less Than Jake on this?” and we were like Yeah, but that would never happen.” And we kind of reached out to their people and they were totally into it, which was kind of surreal. They were like “Ah man, a heavy band like this has never asked us to do anything like this!” They were super cool. On other collaborations, we had Jeremy Schwartz who I started the band with in high school who hasn’t been in the band in almost ten years. He came back and we wrote a song together and we got him on the album. My friend, Chelsea Talmadge, who is just a great singer and is a part of that show Stranger Things. We got her to sing and she did a beautiful job. And yeah, it all just came out great.
Hearing some of the people you got as guest vocals, it almost sounds like this is your dream album come true. Not only are you getting to sing about some of your all-time favorite horror movies but you’re also getting to work with some of your all-time favorite bands.
It’s awesome man. Just getting praise from people that I know in horror and people who have produced horror documentaries that I grew up watching, like Anthony Masi who produced the His Name Was Jason documentary and the Halloween: 25 Years of Terror documentary. You know, them just saying this is one of their favorite albums they’ve ever heard, it’s just great. At the end of the day, I’m a fan myself, so to see other people who are so passionate about the genre embrace our album [is great].
youtube
Obviously this isn’t an easy question to answer but what do you think initially drew you to the horror genre?
You know, it’s odd. I’ve been into it since I was a little kid. Basically, my love for the genre was birthed at a local video store that was in a grocery store where I grew up. My mom would go shopping and bring me along and to kill time I would hang out in this video store. And you know, for whatever reason I was drawn to the aisle that said “Horror.” And I would look to see the artwork on the covers of these VHS tapes like Halloween and Friday The 13th and I wanted to see what this shit was about. My parents were cool enough to let me watch those films and I think they assumed I’d grow out of it. I guess, you know, 25 years later I’m talking on the phone about it and making an album, so I guess I didn’t grow out of it [laughs]. But yeah, I don’t know. I think maybe some of it was like, I always dressed up like Michael Myers on Halloween and [I would think how] if I was the monster, then the monster couldn’t get me.
Do you think if music never panned out, you would’ve tried to find a way to work in horror movies?
Absolutely! It’s kind of one of my other goals. We’re making this movie and I’m acting in it. I’ve never acted before and I’ve got a lot to learn. But helping come up with the videos, scripts and screenplays, it’s just something I’d like to get into. Someone like Rob Zombie is so cool because he does music and he directs films. You know, maybe someday down the line, I can accomplish that dream too.
How nerve-racking was it to do the acting and be so involved with this project?
It was definitely nerve-racking and watching the videos I could definitely tell I got better over time. There were some amateur moves I didn’t know I was doing, like little nervous ticks. But from what a lot of people are saying, the kind of people who wouldn’t bullshit me, actually said they think I could maybe do it someday with some practice. They think that I was pretty good but we’ll see [laughs].

In about two more weeks, we will officially begin a brand new decade with hopes of starting something beautiful and life-changing for the human race. Until then, we’d like to take a second to look back on some of the finer things that came out of 2019 – you know, like the best album, best song, best movie, etc.
Like we’ve done in years past, we’ve completely turned our year-end best-of list over to the artists we cover on a daily basis because let’s face it, their opinions are the ones we all really care about, right?
Right.
To check out what bands like The Used, Counterparts, Periphery, Killswitch Engage, Fit For A King, Grayscale, Atreyu, Wage War, Boston Manor and more have all been obsessing over for the past year or so, be sure to see below. We hope you enjoy this final list as much as we do and wish you all the most peaceful and positive holiday season ever.
Enjoy!
Jeph Howard and Dan Whitesides - The Used
JEPH HOWARD
Best Album of 2019: Sampa the Great - The Return And Knocked Loose - A Different Shade Of Blue
Best Song of 2019: “Blow Me” - from The Used and yes I’m biased.
Best Music Video of 2019: Wendall - “The Power of Wings”
Most Underrated Album of 2019: Sampa the Great - The Return. Her vibe reminds me of my favorite era of hip hop.
Best Movie of 2019: Dr. Sleep, great book too. Must have been tough rewriting the story just enough to mix both the book The Shining and the film adaptation Kubrick made and then making a movie based on both origins.
Most Binge-Worthy Show of 2019: The OA season 3. So unfair that never happened.
Favorite Internet Moment of 2019 (Viral Video, GIF, Meme, etc.): Epstein was an inside job and also the cat playing the cell phone ring tone 😂
Best Concert You Attended/Played in 2019: HodgePodge Superfest 2019 Indonesia, mostly because I got to hang with a couple family friends I haven’t seen in years.
2020 New Year's Resolution: For 2020 I want to worry less about things I have no control over.
DAN WHITESIDES
Best Album: The Knocked Loose album A Different Shade Of Blue is great and so fuckin heavy! On the other side of things, the Billie Eilish album is really good front to back. Saw her live in Salt Lake and it was pretty sick.
Best Song: Honestly, it’s “Blow Me” by my band The Used. I’m not just saying that because it’s my band. It’s a great fucking song and it has all of my favorite elements in it.
Best Music Video: Blink 182’s “Darkside.” Love the stick tricks and the dancing kids.
Most Underrated Album: All the albums I liked in 2019, I rated them pretty high.
Best Movie: Dumb and Dumber has been the best movie every year since it came out. All the kids movies that came out in 2019 were good. I see them all. I didn’t really like The Addams Family though.
Most Binge-Worthy Show of 2019: Atypical and Fuller House and I’m not fucking with you. I laugh out loud at Fernando every time!
Favorite Internet Moment of 2019 (Viral Video, GIF, Meme, etc.): When the deaf baby hears for the first time. I almost cried but I couldn’t because I’m a man and men don’t cry. Just playin! I did tear up a weeee bit.
Best Concert You Attended/Played in 2019: Saw Rob Zombie and damn he puts on a great show. Back To The Beach was my favorite show I played in 2019. We did a cover of Linkin Park’s “Shadow Of The Day” at that show and it started raining. People were crying. It was nuts!
2020 New Year's Resolution: I don’t really do resolutions but I wish people could just get along despite their beliefs. Life is too short.
Misha Mansoor - Periphery
Best Album of 2019: Mordial by Carbomb Best Song of 2019: “F it Up” by Louis Cole Best Music Video of 2019: “Genesis” by Devin Townsend Most Underrated Album of 2019: Forever, A Fast Life by Infinity Shred Best Movie of 2019: Jojo Rabbit Most Binge-Worthy Show of 2019: Barry Favorite Internet Moment of 2019 (Viral Video, GIF, Meme, etc.): Gamer Girl Bath Water Best Concert You Attended/Played in 2019: Attended - Deadmau5 Cube V3. Played - Sold Out London headliner at O2 Kentish Town 2020 New Year's Resolution: Drive more cars
Brendan Murphy - Counterparts
Best Album of 2019: Better Off - Reap What You Sow. Luke is probably the best songwriter I know personally. The album is an absolute fucking hit. I literally begged him to send me the masters before the album came out and I’ve listened to it non-stop since. Was hard to keep that album a secret.
Best Song of 2019: Gotta go with what my Spotify wrapped tells me and aside from the 1975’s discography, my most listened to song of 2019 was “Slingshot” by Better Off. The song is amazing, the lyrics rock, chorus is fucking huge. Like I said, Luke can’t write a bad song.
Best Music Video of 2019: I’ll be honest, it’s rare for me to watch any music video that doesn’t have the 1975 in it so I’m gonna go ahead and pick their video for “Frail State of Mind” because... I mean look at him, he’s so cool. If we could get away with making videos like that I might actually not dread shooting them haha.
Most Underrated Album of 2019: BETTER OFF, YET AGAIN. ARE YOU SURPRISED? I don’t understand how they aren’t the biggest band on earth.
Best Movie of 2019: Midsommar. I’m a total A24/Ari Aster fanboy and I love movies about freaky cults and this movie ticks all the boxes. It’s not as much of a “deep dive” as Hereditary, very surface level, but I mean it’s creepy and it’s shot beautifully and there’s flowers everywhere and in case you forgot I sing for Counterparts so it’s right up my fuckin alley haha.
Most Binge-Worthy Show of 2019: Barry without question. Blake made me watch an episode when we were recording NLTL and I binged watched the show so hard I’d be up all night watching when I was supposed to be writing lyrics. Last time I was physically unable to stop watching a show was Lost, so that should say something.
Favorite Internet Moment of 2019 (Viral Video, GIF, Meme, etc.): My own twitter hun xox 😘
Best Concert You Attended/Played in 2019: I mean it’s hard to remember our shows because not only are they all fun, I’ve usually had a few chardonnays by the time we go on stage BUT one that stands out is the last day of Private Room 2.0 in Worcester... simply because for all of “Love Me” I didn’t have to say a fucking word, the crowd did the whole damn thing. I think there’s a video where I get so stoked I start screaming “YOU’RE GOD DAMN RIGHT” and jumping. It’s fun and honestly, it’s 10 fucking words don’t make me do it by myself.
2020 New Year's Resolution: Stop accidentally calling my teacher “mom.”
Mike D'Antonio - Killswitch Engage
Best Album of 2019: He Is Legend - White Bat Best Song of 2019: He Is Legend - “Resister Resist Her” Best Music Video of 2019: Death Ray Vision “Just Let It Die” Most Underrated Album of 2019: He Is Legend - White Bat Best Movie of 2019: Joker Most Binge-Worthy Show of 2019: The Mandalorian Favorite Internet Moment of 2019 (Viral Video, GIF, Meme, etc.): Yoda/Toyota meme Best Concert You Attended/Played in 2019: Field Day played in Connecticut a few months back. 2020 New Year's Resolution: Refuse the new world order

Ryan Kirby - Fit For A King
Best Album of 2019: Just for the purpose of nostalgia, I am going to go with Shaped by Fire by As I Lay Dying. It doesn't re-invent the wheel but it's just some good ole metalcore that brings me back.
Best Song of 2019: I absolutely cannot stop listening to "Masochist" by Polaris. This band is going to be huge!
Best Music Video of 2019: I feel like I have to say our own video for "When Everything Means Nothing" is the best strictly because we all almost died of hypothermia while getting sprayed by a fire hose.
Most Underrated Album of 2019: I think The Valley by Whitechapel doesn't get talked about near as much as it should. Phil's cleans are fantastic and they keep bringing the heavy.
Best Movie of 2019: I feel like this will be a lot of people's favorite movie but The Joker was an absolute masterpiece.
Most Binge-Worthy Show of 2019: This one is EASILY The Boys. It might be the most well-done superhero show OR movie ever made. Once you watch the first episode, you are sucked in.
Favorite Internet Moment of 2019 (Viral Video, GIF, Meme, etc.): This one is really tough because at this point, I don't even know which meme is from what year. I guess I'll go with Baby Yoda since I know that’s 2019 but with a disclaimer: There are a lot of NOT funny Baby Yoda memes out there.
Best Concert You Attended/Played in 2019: The show in Cologne, Germany with As I Lay Dying was the biggest club show we had ever played, and at the same time, probably one of the best live performances I've ever seen. Amazing night.
2020 New Year's Resolution: I want to be able to run a half marathon with my dad. It’s pretty simple but he is out here running full marathons all the time and is double my age. I feel like I need to step it up.
Valentino Arteaga - Of Mice & Men

Favorite Internet Moment of 2019 (Viral Video, GIF, Meme, etc.): Baby Yoda memes are the best memes in the world.
Best Concert You Attended/Played in 2019: I saw Cherub recently and they always put on the best show. This recent one was super inspiring.
2020 New Year's Resolution: Release more music
Alex Biro - Selfish Things
Best Album: The Act by The Devil Wears Prada. Genre-defying and innovative, this was one of my favourite albums of the last decade. I’ve been a TDWP fan since Zombie EP but the growth they’ve shown on their latest release while still staying true to their roots was sonically refreshing.
Best Song: “Old Town Road” by Lil Nas X. This speaks for itself. I’ve never been one to shy away from popular music, but it’s Lil Nas X’s “love everyone but fuck everyone” attitude that kind of impresses me most? He’s punk as hell. He breaks stereotypes. He pissed off 90% of the country music industry. I hope he continues to succeed.
Best Music Video: “bury a friend” by Billie Eilish. I mean, it’s been Billie’s year. We all know that. But the whole “monster under your bed” motif coupled with her wanting to not shy away from the dark side of things in a genre filled to the brim with bubblegum songs and visuals speaks to her innovation as a creative and an artist.
Most Underrated Album of 2019: Everyone I’ve Ever Loved by Valleyheart. This came out a week and a half before 2019 but I’m including it here. “Agnosia” is one of the best songs I’ve heard in years. This band is fucking amazing. Don’t sleep on them. They deserve better than they’ve been given.
Best Movie of 2019: Peanut Butter Falcon. Shia LaBeouf is a true artist, and he’s at the peak of his game here. If you’re a fan of Garden State, The Grand Budapest Hotel, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Rocket Science or any other emotionally devastating indie films, this is a movie for you.
Most Binge-Worthy Show of 2019: The Simpsons. God bless you Disney+. I can’t even put into words how nice it is to watch all of my old favourites with my daughter. Treehouse of Horror forever.
Favorite Internet Moment of 2019 (Viral Video, GIF, Meme, etc.): Colton jumping the fence during The Bachelor. We admittedly got snowed in during the “snow cyclone” in Wyoming and binged this whole season. I’ve never been more disappointed. Still impressed by his agility, though.
Best Concert You Attended/Played in 2019: Atlanta, GA w/ Microwave, Boston Manor and Heart Attack Man. We’ve never had that many kids over the barricade. It was one of those “wow, maybe our band isn’t totally shit” moments. We all got off stage and knew it was one to remember. I’ll never forget it.
2020 New Year's Resolution: Learn to be happy with who I am without letting the toxicity of social media cloud my self-perception.
Ryan Donovan - Red City Radio
Best Album of 2019: Mannequin Pussy - Patience. "Who You Are" & "Drunk II" are some standout tracks on that record for me! It's just filled with melodic anthems that have killer soft harmonies and is kind of a technically ambitious record compared to their older stuff, which I also love!
Best Song of 2019: The Menzingers - "America (You're Freaking Me Out)." They fucking NAILED it with this track and our current climate in the US, socially/politically/economically etc. They seamlessly always write some killer tunes!
Best Music Video of 2019: PUP - "Free At Last." No one had heard the song yet. They posted the lyrics and chord chart to the song and took all submissions of everyone's interpretation of the song and edited that down. You just gotta watch it for yourself, IT FUCKING RULES. Most Underrated Album of 2019: Decent Criminal - BLISS. I love this band and their tunes/sound. Small indy label release and I hope they take some more strides forward and keep growing. They rip.
Best Movie of 2019: Favorite movie I have personally seen so far this year is Once Upon A Time In Hollywood. I heard it was a lot of either "love it" or "hated it" kind of reviews but I personally thought it was a killer film.
Most Binge-Worthy Show of 2019: Ah man, with so much time on the road touring this year for RCR binge-watching older shows was a lot of my downtime when I got back home so here are some favs: Admittedly I had never seen Breaking Bad, that has now been binged and completed. Game Of Thrones (hadn't seen it until this Summer, I know, I know whatever). Animal Kingdom, Succession, Punisher, Jessica Jones and I Think You Should Leave.
Favorite Internet Moment of 2019 (Viral Video, GIF, Meme, etc.): I LOVE THIS MEME and I do love pizza.
Best Concert You Attended/Played in 2019: Probably the last show of our short tour with Hot Water Music over in Cologne, Germany. It was the largest capacity venue show we have ever played as a band - that wasn't a festival - at 4k humans, sold out! It was also extra special because Rockpalast had a 10+ human camera crew on hand and filmed the whole thing with live edits as it was streamed for anyone to tune in and watch. The edits and camera/audio/streaming quality was A+!!!
2020 New Year's Resolution: Better self-care.
Brett Boland - Astronoid

Conversation
Best Album of 2019: Copeland - Blushing. I’ve been a huge fan of this band for years and years and years; to say that they shaped my songwriting is an understatement. I was lucky enough to catch Copeland for the first time on this tour and it was a truly tectonic moment for me. Blushing was a perfect step for this band in terms of tone, emotional maturity and instrumental creativity. I was just so happy to hear every single song.
Best Song of 2019: “Make It Better” by Anderson Paak. This track just puts you in a good mood!!
Best Music Video of 2019: Our music video for “You’ve Made Yourself Perfectly Clear” where we accurately and tastefully re-created the opening scene of Wayne’s World to perfection. I know it seems like a bit of a brag to say you had the best video of the year, but truth be told, nothing else even came close.
Best Movie of 2019: Joker - I’m sure this will be a pretty common response but IT WAS INCREDIBLE!!
Most Binge-Worthy Show of 2019: Letterkenny - A hilarious show about small-town Canada. If you don’t know, now you know.
Favorite Internet Moment of 2019 (Viral Video, GIF, Meme, etc.): Jonathan Frakes Asking Questions.
Best Concert You Attended/Played in 2019: A close tie between Arkells at Scotiabank Arena and Barr Brothers at Mod Club
2020 New Year's Resolution: To tour all of the USA and Europe for our new record. We are all so excited for the new music that we’re about to put out into the world and our undying dream is to show our live show to the entire world. SO THAT’S WHAT WE’RE DOING!!!
