I liked it better when Katara released Aang from his 100 year slumber through the pure unfiltered rage of a feminist rant at her brother

Okay, so this isn’t really related to the larger parts of the season, but-
Can I just say I absolutely love how they introduced Callum’s dad?
Like, there are so many theories about him, that he was an elf, that he was a warrior who died, that he just up and left them, but in actuality? He was a poet. He was a poet with a sickness from birth and he died from that when Callum was young. He was kind and Sarai loved him. Harrow even respected him and I genuinely love that.
It also makes more sense that it would’ve been harder for Callum to connect with Harrow in the face of that. His dad wasn’t some warrior who died before he knew him, he wasn’t some elf that he never knew, or some deadbeat who left his mom. He was a kind heart poet who was born with a sickness that couldn’t be cured.
That’s extraordinarily tragic, but I love it.

Selected Excerpts From The Fire Nation Royal Palace Servants' (Unofficial) Handbook
Or: Revisions To Normal Protocol After The Ascension Of Agni's Exalted Flame, The Dragon Of The Sun, et cetera, Fire Lord Zuko
1. Agni's Exalted Flame, The Dragon Of The Sun, et cetera, Fire Lord Zuko should not be referred to by his full titles and styles, no matter the context. This appears to annoy him. "Fire Lord Zuko" and "Lord Zuko" are acceptable, as well as "your majesty" and "my Lord".
1.1 "Lord Hotman", however, is unacceptable.
1.2. Even if the Avatar specifically requests you to address Fire Lord Zuko as that.
1.3. In fact, any attempts by the Avatar, the Lady Beifong, the honorable Tribesman Sokka or even Master Katara to get you to address Fire Lord Zuko by anything other than his proper title should be disregarded.
1.4. Referring to Ozai of the Fire Nation (titles rmvd, dishon.) as "The Loser Lord", however, is acceptable.
2. Fire Lord Zuko is aware of the concept of mortality, but does not seem to understand how it relates to His Majesty. Following activities should be discouraged: Free climbing, glider usage, contact with exotic animals larger than a turtleduck (or smaller, if the animal is known to be venomous), amateur theatre productions, cooking, sailing, spelunking, botany, please see full list in the Matron's office.
2.1. It should be noted that His Majesty's belief that mortality does not apply to him does not appear to be completely unfounded. After several "close calls", it has been decided that upon his demise, Fire Lord Zuko should lie in state for at least two weeks.
2.1.1. We do not want another incident.
3. The turtleducks in the Western Pond do not need to be fed by the servants any more.
3.1. However, the turtleducks should be rotated out at regular intervals in order to prevent overfeeding.
4. At any official social functions, at least three servants should be vigilant in case His Majesty tries to tell a joke.
4.1. It should be noted that there is no concern for His Majesty's jokes being offensive, crass or otherwise contrary to good taste. They are simply very bad. His Majesty always ends up embarrassed.
5. Any children left unattended in the Royal Palace for more than 15 degrees can be retrieved from the Fire Lord's office.
6. Should His Majesty go missing, the following places should be searched: roofs and any high places, cellars and secret passages, the fur of the Avatar's sky bison (which is surprisingly deep), and every place that an ordinary five-year-old would think to hide in during a game of "Hide and Explode."
6.1. All of the Imperial Firebenders as well as any soldier who wears a mask during the course of their duties should be questioned.
6.1.1. Important note: Some of the soldiers who are especially close to His Majesty can perform a passable imitation of him. Efforts should be made to prevent an uneducated soldier from, say, conducting a meeting with the Minister of Agriculture.
6.2. After the recent incident, that list is expanded to include the Kyoshi Warriors and any other groups that might wear concealing full face paint.
6.3. If all of these measures prove ineffective, a letter should be sent to The Dragon of the West, Prince Iroh, asking His Highness to return His Majesty.
6.4. If a ransom note is delivered, it should be immediately checked against the handwriting samples from the honorable Tribesman Sokka as well as Avatar Aang, before any other actions are taken.
6.4.1. Replying "Good luck, he's your problem now" to a ransom note is absolutely unacceptable.
6.4.1.1. To further drive home the point, the Royal Archives are required by law to preserve every single piece of royal correspondence. That thing will end up in a museum.
This handbook will be updated should it prove necessary.

Something I just realized about DanDaDan. In most shows, the main group usually grows because the original team welcomes the new member. Like when Team Avatar brought in Toph Beifong or whenever Luffy asked someone to join the Straw Hats.
In DanDaDan, literally no one wants to be there and they only became friends after being forced to spend time with each other. What I mean is:
1) Okarun and Momo hated each other in the beginning.
2) Aira was a villain at first. Then when she mellowed out, Momo and Okarun were adamant that she not join their team. Aira only stayed because she’s so delusional that she declared herself team leader. Momo and Okarun then just kinda went, “Well, fuck, she’s not going anywhere so welcome aboard, I guess.”
3) Jiji annoyed the fuck out of everyone in the beginning, especially Okarun since he saw him as a rival for Momo’s affection. This man had to put in the work to get on Okarun’s good side. And then there’s Momo who, even though they were childhood friends, was still annoyed by him.
4) Vamola literally got dropkicked by Momo when they first met.
5) Kinta Sakata forced his way into the group. Even the characters were like, “Who the fuck is this guy?” And when the group did get to know him, they instantly wanted to kick him out.
6) Rin Sawaki’s first significant moment was getting into a public argument with Momo. She also weirded Okarun out with her vampire/dungeon fetish fantasy.
It’s like the manga version of Community, where none of the characters seem to get along but they’re somehow friends. It’s like they show love by getting on each other’s nerves.
TL;DR;
Most shows: “Welcome to the team, new guy!”
DanDaDan: “Well we can’t get rid of you so…see you tomorrow, I guess.”

Dallas Liu is an amazing Zuko.
Like perfect vibes. He’s angry, he’s whiny, his voice cracks, he drew rage art of Aang and hung it on his wall right after meeting him, he disguised himself by wrapping a scarf over his eye, some random woman beat him up…
I’ve only seen three episodes and he’s perfect.

Listening to someone else watch the original ATLA again, just starting season 3, and there's this line where Aang suggests that it didn't just look like he died, but he DID actually die and Katara brought him back. And look, I don't know much about the lore introduced by TLOK, but this sounds like a really fun place to start an AU inspired by "Buffy the Vampire Slayer"'s take on the temporary death and resurrection of a cyclical chosen one: Aang is brought back to life and is STILL the Avatar, but his temporary death still also causes another Avatar to be born into the Southern Water Tribe (or Swamp People or refugees on some southern island, whatever).
Like, I know the Avatar is a reincarnation thing, but weird things can happen with spirits! Maybe this glitch in the cycle causes the spiritual equivalent of mitosis to happen to the Avatar and the spirit attached to them, so there's just two of them now! Maybe having two Avatars has some spiritual downsides, maybe not, it's up to whatever path you choose to explore in this AU.
I just think it would be really funny for post-canon 20-something Aang (and the Gaang and the White Lotus and all the spiritual / religious orders on the planet) to suddenly be confronted with a 10yo water tribe kid who is ALSO the Avatar.
A water tribe couple shuffle awkwardly up to Sokka, like, "Sooooo... we think our 10 year old daughter might be the Avatar...? She can, uh, bend all the elements and all that. Look at this shit." And Sokka is like, "Fuck, Aang is dead?!" Before he's like, "Wait, I saw Aang last week, this kid is way too old?!" And he has to hastily contact Aang like, "Hey, buddy, you're still alive, right?" And Aang can only reply, "Uhhh, last I checked, yes?!?!"
It's probably Sokka and Katara who put the pieces of the timeline together and figure out what caused this, because all of the other Avatars are probably initially like, "Yeah, I have no idea what's happening here. I'm you and you're me, but I'm also her and she's also me, and you and her are kind of the same person, but you're obviously different people now? Wow! Good luck figuring all that out, kid! You're really going places none of us have gone before! A real groundbreaker!"
Aang, through gritted teeth, "I am really not TRYING to do that, thank you!"

Seven Sisters and Atlas MAJOR SPOILERS
Ye have been warned
Finished the seven sisters series yesterday and im having some Thoughts
The author was unable to complete the series as she passed away in 2021 and the final book was published posthumously by her son in 2023. I have no problem with this and think its really sweet actually,
HOWEVER
I did not like the sheer amount of ooooh irish alcoholism in the 7th book. You can have irish people without making them all alcoholics goddam. Oh but its ok cos our irish people are good hard working alcoholics not like those other dirty lazy alcoholics. No. STOP IT.
Im not going to comment on the depiction of the Troubles as I will leave that to actual irish people.
I did not enjoy the amount of drama from the oldest daughter who is supposed to be 59 and have 2 adult kids and a successful business which includes providing accommodation to strangers.
Ma'am you are an adult, how are you this scared of strangers and also why are you fainting from shock multiple times wtf. You ARE the adultier adult, why are you like this.
I also did not enjoy the abrupt switch between these people are out to get me and my kids to oh its fine for my kids to hang out with them but im not going and you cant make me, to oh i suppose if i Have To. Again ma'am you are 59 act like it. Blease im begging.
I did like the twists of Pa Salts life in the 8th book, it was really interesting to see how we got to current day.
However, the ending made the inciting incident for the series being his death feel very infantilising.
Like 6 of his kids are adopted and he refused to tell them anything about himself including HIS NAME their whole lives and theyre just like sure ok nothing sus here??? And he kept it up while they were adults??? I get that a certain amount of this is hand waved as Billionaire but im pretty sure you couldnt keep it up indefinitely even with infinite money.
And speaking of death it is super uncool to tell your kids you died and then have them find out a full YEAR LATER, psych not really dead but actually dying now so of course you only live long enough to die the exact same day they arrive to your secret dying house. Because you have one of those. Because you didnt die. So there was no will or tallying of properties.
What. The. Actual. Fuck.
Way to remove your kids agency.
And then the end of the series is your kids setting up a new charity for an orphanage? Given up children? I cant brain the term. And having them dancing around their garden about it like theyre 5 and not the adults they actually are??? Like you couldve had them donate the vast quantities of their fortune to existing charities that are already written about in the books!! Theyre RIGHT THERE CMON!!
Anyway these last couple of books just got me really mad and i think im gonna avoid this genre in the future, so im gonna calm down by reading a nice murder mystery or maybe a batman comic

Imperfect Canvass
Read on AO3.
It's easy to forget, there, in Caldera. So they do everything in their power to remember. . The Blue Spirit and the Painted Ghost meet in the city each night, two souls in eternal search for repentance. Katara tries to find a way to kill the war, whatever it takes. Zuko, the Perfect Prince, offers her the only pieces of him that remain.

sokka trying to get katara to give up on her waterbending bc it could get her killed. and katara refuses to give up and continues to practice anyway. bc sokka and katara represent the survival of both the people and the culture. sokka had the safety of their people thrust upon him by his dad, while katara is the only one in their tribe that can carry the weight of their culture. both are heavy burdens, and they're struggling with their roles bc they're just two kids trying to rebuild in the wake of genocide. but they refuse to give up, bc that's what the story is about.
holding onto hope, regardless of what you face.
