Rewatching Avatar: the last Airbender (WITH MY MOM!)

Ok so i convinced my mom to watch ATLA with me. she's 68, but with the mind (and the looks mind you) of a 40y/o woman who loves cartoons, so it was quite the blast.

i'll go Book by Book and tell you guys her very amusing (and accurate) thoughts.

So here i go.

MY MOM WATCHES ATLA: BOOK I

-first coment is when she saw Zuko and it was like "ooh, he's hot!" and i was like "he's a teenager" and she was like "he's also not real" so point for her.

-IMMEDIATELY after learning the Avatar has to learn the four elements, she already knew Zuko was going to chance sides and teach Firebending to Aang.

-First episodes were a bit slow but she caught onto it because of the fantasy elements. she had a bit of a hard time picking the whole bending thing. not the bending itself, but the fact that not everyone who lives in the earth kingdom or wears green is an earthbender, but she catch it up quickly.

-she pointed out that Aang's airbending is not very consistent. "Why doesn't the Avatar just blow them away?! he did so in that other episode" and well, its kinda true.

-when it was Haru's episode i said "you're gonna like him". and when Haru showed up she was "ooooh i like him! not as much as the prince tho."

-"you realize its the brother (sokka) who things all the plans, right? he's the brains" she said, halfway through Book One. she's a smart one my mom.

-"when is the earth master going to appear?" "aang has to learn waterbending first" "well but he could appear!" "just wait, mom -.-"

-she is dumbfounded and amazed at the creatures of the Avatar World. "i don't know what the heck that is but is cute/ugly as fuck".

-"this girl Katara is gonna end up with the prince right? Fire and water, perfect match" oh mom. you're in for a dissapointment.

-in the fortune teller episode "but aang's too young for katara! he's twelve right? and she's, fifteen or something?" and i said "yeah, it was kind of a thing at the time" and she said "makes no sense. also, the Avatar is like a superhero. those people... belong to the world, you know? they cant be with anyone". she's pretty wise my mom.

-"I LIKE JET!" then Jet tries to kill the old man "i dont like Jet" then Jet tries to blow up the dam "i hate Jet."

-She thinks Uncle Iroh is the best, specially after he was kidnapping. "He sure knows how to fight" she said. "he's a bit of a goof chummy guy but he gives good advice" (remember this is still Book One).

-she was mindblowed by "the storm". "poor prince. no wonder he's always so mad. still, i like his scar. it looks like a flame."

and i was like "what?" and i realized that, yes, zuko scar sometimes looks like a flame when looked from the side. my mom had to point that out to me T.T.

-"WHY IS KATARA PRACTICING WITH THE WATER IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT-?! AND SHE SCREAMING TOO! SHE'S GONNA BE FOUND!" right you are, mom.

-after roku's episode "poor aang. he's gonna do all that, learn all the elements, fight that son of a bitch, and all that before summer? its too much" :(

-during Bato's episode "nah. nah, you can't do that Aang, come on." "he feels left out" "but that scrolls is important right? its about the guys father!" right she was. also she didn't stop laughing at Uncle Iroh flirting with the bounty hunter girl.

-she was having none of Master Pakku bullshit. when katara confronted him she was "hell yeah, show him whats good!" and when we found out master pakku was gran gran old 'boyfriend' "OH, now he's gonna teach her just because she's the grandaughter of his lost love. right. -.-" and i was laughing mad because dont we all know its the truth? XD

-when she saw the fire nation armada she was like "O.O HOW DO YOU EVEN BEAT THAT?"

-and when zuko ship exploded "noooooo! dont kill my princeee, he's so preety! :("

-she doesn't know why sokka felt in love so fast with Yue, and neither do I.

-she got repeatidely frustrated by Aang not taking serious the situations that should be serious, but she shrugged it as "he's twelve".

-at the end of the season, when we see Azula for the first time i told her "i cant BEGIN to tell you how long we had to wait to see how this turned out, because season two took forever to air (we live in latino america)". she was just as excited as i was and wanted to see more.

-as a personal note, i watched this series as a kid and its wild to rewatch it as an adult becase, like, you can apreaciate how well paced and well thought everything is, and how the characters actions NOW reflect what we will learn from them later.

All in all , my mom liked it Book I A LOT, and we waited little in watching book II.

Preparing, Cooking and Curing Venison

ok so I'm from rural Iowa, right. and Hunting is a big, big thing. I have a very vivid memory of a hunter hanging a deer upside down in his backyard to bleed it dry

and while rereading the first few chapters and reading the "few hours" in terms of curing the meat, it had me a bit 🤨. even tho I had never hunted myself, it did trigger an alarm in my head so I went deep diving. never in my life did I think I'd be looking into curing meat and here we are

there's several ways to cure meat but the most traditional is dry curing with salt. I see 'traditional' I see 'old school'. This is like medieval times so it seemed the most logical and ideal form of curing

1) eating raw venison is a Risk. no one who is actually versed in hunting and eating game is going to risk getting sick when they're already starving. Diarrhea and loss of fluids is a huge risk factor

2) Feyre said she alloted a "few hours" to curing meat. it needs a MINIMUM of 24 hours to 5 DAYS in order to properly cure. as stated above, would people be willing to pay for a "few hours of curing" when 1) curing meat was a common practice 2) with it being a common practice are people really going to gamble with a "few hours" of curing with the risks of illness from unproperly preserved meat 3) it needs a ton of salt in order to do cure. Salt was a luxury for a lot of medieval folks. it probably cost them a decent sum to be able to aquire

while venison is "easy" to cook, it can be tricky as it can easily get overcooked and very tough. As we can see, it's roasted. roasting is predominantly done in an oven or a crockpot. considering it's medieval times, I'm gonna guess an oven. Ovens were very rare and very expensive in the home and community ovens are more likely to be used.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say they cooked it over a fire. it's a few minutes to prevent over-cooking. it's not a typical food that would be cooked in a more lavish lifestyle and since Feyre could not cook, I'm going to wager that it took a little bit of trial and error for one of the sisters to learn how

I'm still stuck on the ATLA thing and I just realized that San can probably melt metals and throw it around to burn his enemies' flesh to the bone.

If Wooyo and Mingi combine their powers they can make a fire tornado. Yunho can bloodbend, make blood clot in your veins, make it heat up and expand so much that every single capillary bursts.

Hongjoong's light magic, if he can imbibe an arrow with it and it hits someone, can probably combust someone from the inside with the amount of energy light has. (Do you think he kinda has a glow from within because of his light magic tho? Whenever I think if him as the Prince of light, I imagine him glowing)

Also ever since the picture of Lightning bender Mingi took a seat in my head I've had this headcanon that whenever he gets flustered or shy little flashes of Lightning fly around him. Like you can literally SEE his fuse short circuiting

Ayn Rand (and BioShock)

Libertarians worship Ayn Rand and her fictions as this "capitalist biblical work".

These are what people refer to as "Neo-Liberals" or the liberal branch of "red/political right", despite... Only being the non-religious right. Here's the thing tho; they got Ayn Rand wrong. And kinda tarnished her appearance and reputation.

A long time ago, a philosophy-major friend of mine introduced me to Atlas Shrugged; in the same way every libertarian does. With the same arguments about freedom, capitalism, and just having a raging boner for the things certain characters say.

Despite the book being a Dystopian Novel about the kind of warfare the Rich (Capitalists) do with the other Rich people. (The "Government").

No I've only read Shrugged once or twice (her books are not cheap) and the fountainhead I've read never.

Personally, I think BioShock 1 got the entire "misuse of Ayn Rand" while also demonstrating some of the actual good bits of her works completely right. The game Depicts a masculinized version of Ayn Rand (Known as Andrew Ryan) who created the fictional "rich getaway" seen in the climax of the Ayn's novel.

Andrew Ryan represents the Libertarian, who took the philosophy of Ayn Rand, and twisted it to create the Underwater city; Rapture. He basically represents what happens if there is no government oversight. A government run, entirely under his own control. Like some kind of... Dare I say it; Dictator who owns the city of Rapture.

There's a lot more to the game; such as the main character being mind controlled by "nice words" that Frank Fontaine use as a command (instead of just being polite.) Who is effectively working under the guide of making rapture a better place. He secretly just wants control of Rapture as a whole.

The overall oppressive, not very friendly nature of Rapture obfuscates this twist. Because while he is an asshole character; so is Andrew Ryan and all of Rapture.

It basically takes capitalism to it's extreme negative; where everything can be bought and sold. And "Doctors" literal mutilate patients for their art, instead of health. And capitalists have genetically altered children to create a form of *magic* that people can buy. Literally sacrificing children for capital.

My philosophy-major friend did not like the idea of BioShock 1, because it understandably twisted Ayn Rand's work. (As many libertarian capitalists argue.)

But here's the thing; I don't think it did. I think it is an accurate representation of how libertarians and capitalists twist Ayn Rand's work.

The *actual leftist* just hate Rand (not to be confused with Paul Rand) because of this, incorrect interpretation.

So let's go over Ayn Rand's personal beliefs and how it affects her work (This is the thing that is often Argued by neo-libs in favor of their own interpretations)

Now a lot of people are going to attack me outright about "laissez-faire capitalism" and how Ayn Rand was an avid support of the concept. And holy-f* I don't know enough philosophy to even get started on a direct argument on the concept.

Let's say that Rand's philosophy focused more on *minimal* intervention and derided the "Intervention of Force". That is; a person is permitted to do whatever they would like with their own property, *except* aggressive behavior.

That is; warlike behavior; indiscriminate destruction of property, destruction of resources because somebody looked at you wrong, and actively hurting people that work for you.

Ellis Wyatt; a character that everybody seems to side with, much like Henry Reardon. Goes directly against this belief when he burns his oil fields.

The main character, Dagny Taggart (who many believe is an Ayn Rand self insert) during the time her company needs her most; decides to have sex with John Gaalt instead.

John Gaalt, by the way; built a working [perpetual motion device] that nobody else can seem to replicate despite having seen it work *and* having the prototype (which has been damaged beyond repair.)

Even [Game Theorists] figured out how to replicate the Colonel's Chicken recipe (they just forgot to leave the peels on when they threw in the limes. Bitters are a basic food group when you're coming out of a great depression...) But not one-single character can figure out how to replicate the machine?

Now this was in opposition of an idea [from each according to their ability] [to each according to their need], the main criticism of Karl Marx being; why should I be paid less and so more work?

Or, you know... The same argument against capitalism.

The idea isn't that people who can do more, should do more, only that you shouldn't be working less because you have no reason to work more.

And, if you need more to work to the best of your ability.... Maybe you should get more?

Some reference to Pigs on Animal Farm probably works well here.

Kant might be the right philosopher to reference (maybe even Descartes?) When we talk about property rights. And that the only way to value ones right to ownership is the value or labor one puts into creating something.

Or, Mother Goose's story about the "The Little Red Hen". Which states; you're not entitled to the things my labor has created. (Or the money I accrued from my labor.) Despite what you think you have to offer.

You may be entitled to a portion of what you helped create. But you're not entitled to what you can see or touch after the fact, unless you put in the work.

<aside>This is the core reason why I'm cool with a Creative Commons Licence on my work. If you make it big off me; then I make it big. Unfortunately; the draw back is that I don't have a legal team. So, how can I enforce it? But then again; how would I be able to show my body of work if I don't make it public in the first place?

John Gaalt sends a siren song to the rich people of Atlas Shrugged; to go off and start their own country: with black jack and hookers. But what Dagny finds when she winds up there herself (having crashed her ship on rapture's shores); is that she needs to "work her own way".

Which isn't to her ability; as a Vice President and primary operator of her family's railroad company, but instead as a maid. She wasn't invited to "rich people land" after-all.

John Gaalt seduces Dagny after she proves to be of her own mind and will. Much like how Fontaine controls the protagonist of BioShock. Sweet words, a better country, but only if Gaalt/Fontaine gets to be in charge.

After-all they are the smartest genius ever to invent a non-functional perpetual motion device.

Mission; scarlet stars fantasy au (working on finding a name)

-Prologue; kayl-

Notes before story; i dont write multi chapter fics often. And character behaviors might not be 100% accurate to those when the full game comes out(relying on the demo rn), but im having fun! Also, since its still small, MSS was originally created by my buddy, boris! As an instaronpa. Now its becoming a full on game and hes directing it, alongside one other persob and a team. Id give the demo a try! Its on itch.io(? I think thats what its called).

Promotion aside, ive never written a huge fantasy stoey before. Mostly vampires n dragons. Ive been having fun with this though! I get to write and design fantasy appearances for the characters. (Still fighting the urge to give bear-taur mezsha a bear nose...).

Also, while i created a few ocs for this au, Ivernake is not one. Hes from the original mss!! (Not in the demo tho).

Cordelia and casper are two of said ocs. Others that might show up are; atlas, caspian, athena(named after the greek god), and a few unnamed dragon ocs.

Also i hope i wrote this right im not great at writing in the perspective of characters who are meant to be the big bads of the story. And i hope the hunters are written at least okay. I have covid rn and i havent been able to do anything othwr than write and overthink and im overthinking rn lol. Im trying. Not beta read really.

“Captain!,” A heavily scarred man shouted, holding onto a net and heaving it onboard, “We got one of them fish beasts!”

Kayl walked down the stairs very slowly, gripping the hand rail and walking to the flailing mermaid cautiously. “Get some water, now. We need them alive.” He ordered as he squatted down in front of them.

The crewmate scrambled away to grab a bucket, leaving Kayl to talk to the so-called beast.

“Oi,” he started, “What’s your name.”

The mermaid met his gaze, yellow eyes glinting in fear as they trembled. “...Cordelia.”

The red-head glanced over his shoulder as the crewmate returned. The bucket had droplets of water dribbling down the side, causing the mermaid’s eyes to widen in desperation. She reached her hand out and caught a droplet in her palm, sighing with relief and struggling to catch more.

“Cordelia. I have a deal for you,” Kayl said roughly, knocking on the deck to get her attention, “if you tell me where to find harpies and avians, I’ll set you free.”

The bluenette mermaid looked hesitant for a few seconds before she nodded. “Okay. There’s a a flock of harpies north of here. You’ll know you’re close to them when you pass a large oak.”

Kayl nodded, grabbing the bucket from his crewmate and splashing some water onto Cordelia. “One more thing before i let you out of the net, do you know if any of those birdies is in contact with a mage?”

Cordelia wrinkled her nose at that, slapping her tail on the deck in frustration. “I don’t. Please, let me free now.”

Kayl stood up with a sigh, waving his head. “Well, i am a man of my word… Casper, undo the net and toss the fish overboard. There’s one more of these beasts that I must talk to.”

The creature had been on the ship for days, refusing to address the crewmates or the captain. They had been starved, dehydrated, even threatened. But they refused to speak. Kayl was sure it’d change today.

“Moth,” he said smoothly, briskly making his way to the cage, “are ya ready to speak? Name first. And then I’ll ask questions.”

The moth-creature looked up gloomily, their eyes sunken with exhaustion and hunger and thirst. “...Ivernake.”

“I’ve heard of ya. Famous boxer, i think? Must make loooots of money. I got a proposal for ya; if you give us a few thousand gold, we’ll let ya leave! Deal?” Kayl stuck his hand in the cage, cracking a grin.

Ivernake scoffed, smacking his hand away. “You aren’t getting anything from me. No matter what you and your scum crewmates do, i’m not gonna give you anything for my freedom if it risks others like myself being hurt. I’d rather die.”

The captain’s face became a sneer. “Then die you will.” He hissed, drawing the sword from his hip and planting it directly in the middle of the moth’s back.

Just as he drew his blade out and let the boxer fall to the ground, his crewmates broke into a riot. “CAPTAIN!”, one yelled. “SHE’S BACK!” Another screamed.

Kayl dove for cover before looking up. That purple-haired vulture had made a return, her arms full of bottles and her wings flapping furiously against the wind.

Drop, smash, drop, smash. It started with small yellow bursts, but then it grew larger. The ship began to sink, the cages began to slip around on the deck. His crewmates were wailing and abandoning ship.

It took a lot of effort for Kayl to stand up, but he managed. The last thing he saw before he slammed into the water was the lifeless, unforgiving, eyes of Ivernake.

He didn’t feel remorse, though. He felt angry. He couldn’t die now, he refused to. He swam against the tide and gasped for air, watching as his ship sank to the dark abyss– and a feeling of hatred engulfed his heart. He watched as the vulture dove down for one single cage, dragging it up in her talons and calling for help.

Three more avians flew in and lifted the cage with the lifeless body inside.

How many times had that same group come to sink his ship, how many times had he lost a crewmate and some good money? He couldn’t keep count. He was mad, and he certainly wanted those birds gone for good.

Do you think Omi and Chase would do liondancing together? Or maybe Dashi?

That would be awesome!!!! However, I think that would be difficult to perform when the dancers have a such significant height difference 😅 Buut given Chase is so skilled and Omi usually is in tune with Chase's movements, they would manage! (and our jaws would drop!)

Thanks for implating that idea in my head, anon! Tbh I'm still of the opinion Omi would have a little difficulty lifting Chase up during the performance, so they would perform the lion dance once Omi grows up a little bit. I know I said it would be manageable but Omi would occasionally remind Chase he doesn't want Chase to 'cheat'. And by 'cheat' I mean Chase slightly keeps his feet higher, using his flying abilities. As we know, Omi is very serious about his own abilities and he would reprimand Chase

'I want to do it on my own'.

Chase: we'll trip if we don't fly.

Omi: I'm a strong young warrior. (Omi proceeds to struggle with the additional weight of Chase's armor)

So, yeah even though they're both good at maintaining balance on each platform they would not pull the dance as gracefully as they thought. (Chase goddamit lose the armor then there won't be any problems)

However, I've got a nice alternative that would fit both of them perfectly. DRAGON DANCE FROM ATLA

In which Omi reflects Aang's movements and Chase mimics anything Zuko does in that dance. I picture Chase having some of Zuko's traits anyway so everything tracks lol

As for Dashi and Chase's version of the lion dance!!!!!! They're basically like these two dudes from the video!

Although I'm not sure if it's historically accurate to assume these two could ever perform such a dance. Because I headcanon Dashi's era happened somewhere in 504 AD??? And The lion dance was popular a century later???

But I'm not rejecting this possibility entirely because as one of the sources reports, the Lion dance came from Persia to China in the Three Kingdoms Period (220–280). It wasn't as common as in Tang Dynasty (618–907) sooooooooooooooo

Dashi: there's a neat festival, bro! And I heard there is a spectacular performance in which 2 dancers share the same lion costume and they have to dance by jumping from one platform to another and-

Chase: HELL NO I'M ANTISOCIAL LET ME SLEEP

Dashi: but brother we must!

Chase: NO. I hate festivals and I hate when you wake me up because of trivial things.

Dashi: 🥺

Chase: I said 'NO'. 'No' means NO. I won't go to the festival. I won't indulge in its attractions. I won't dance with you. I won't ....

So yeah this is how I see Dashi and Chase as young adults haha

And when Guan joins them, Dashi is persistent to dance only with Chase because they're more in sync. And well, look at Guan. He's a big boy. Of course, Dashi, who is very slim, would prefer someone whose weight is more close to his own lol

Dashi: c'mon Chase! Let's do the lion dance!

Chase, drinking water: Dance with Guan.

Dashi: But bro, we both know why I can't dance with Guan :(

Chase: ugh fine, but it's the last time. (spoiler: it's always the last time)

Guan ain't complaining tho. He awards his brothers with the loudest applause <3

• Sterling has astigmatism (also accurate photo of what lights look like, because i also have it irl and it's a fuckin PAIN-) which doesn't help with them being legally blind.

• Finn grew up close to Aran, and they'll occasionally act like siblings or at least favorite cousins, which his personality and chaos rubbed off on Finn but not completely.

• Finn is into Vulture Culture (⚠️TW⚠️ for bones and de@d animals if you don't know what that is and look it up) and has absolutely cleaned/sterilized a few skulls and sent them to Sterling.

• ^ Said skulls scare tf out of Atlas at times because he forgets they're there

• Ster and Atlas' family is... Far bigger than they know. Ster's especially since their mom's side of the family hides a lot about their bloodline.

• 99% of their mom's side of the family Ster doesn't have any from of contact with, wither they cut them off or they cut off her. The 1% is specifically their moms (only one is bio to Ster but still) and siblings, and their triplet cousins (who were also cut off the same way)

• Both Ster and Atlas' parents had them young. Ster is only 16 years younger and Atlas is 19 years younger.

• Sterling actually is trained to be a boxer but, due to health reasons, aren't. They'll help Atlas practice tho by being a living target, as long as it's not all three rounds of a actual boxing match. And oh god if anyone finds out, beyond Atlas of course, about that Sterling WOULD automatically be questioned on it

• ^ Ster does get bruises from that training, but have always kinda had random bruises everywhere so just kinda plays it off and acts like they don't know where it came from.

• Finn has absolutely went with Aran on his boxing trips at LEAST once and both caused absolute mayhem.

I’ve committed a sin, that I wish to confess.

After years of telling myself that I would NEVER! EVER! Read “It Ends With Us.”….I did.

Okay. I was told not to read it because “it glorifies abuse.” Of which, it does not. Does Colleen Hoover give an accurate account of what those who are abused deal with and the lies they tell themselves while in an abusive relationship. Surprising yes. The MC, Lily, kept staying with Ryle (Just name your Male MC Kyle btw this was so stupid) because of the lies she told herself.

An excellent example of this would be how Lily kept lying to herself is that Ryle is not her father, therefore, he’s not that bad. Or how after Ryle would hurt Lily, he would always apologize and doctor her. This is not everyone’s experience with one’s abuser. As one who grew up surrounded by domestic violence I know the faces both the abused and abuser wear. So I’m not going to write that It Ends With Us glorified or encouraged domestic violence, because it never, ever does.

Now. Here is why the book is just down right Bad.

One, I wrote them down as I was listening to the book, and when I randomly remembered something I hated. And B, Colleen is not a bad writer, but her…ideas for how to design a character likes and dislike, how she will write plots is not a “struggle” is what makes them bad. I may never read any other of Colleen’s books, but the way she writes her MCs are very much Mary Sues. They are “my life is a struggle! But I just found 1 billions dollars! And my student loans are now free! And I just got CEO position when tho I have no qualifications! BUT MY MILK HAS JUST GONE BAD ! MY LIFE IS OVER!” you see what I’m saying here. I feel lime Colleen has no one in her life to look her in the eyes to talk to her about her “creative process “ and tell her “you can not add Ellen as a fourth MC in your book, and you can not have your MC talk about Ellen every, single, chapter.”

But, all that being said. Here is my list.

1. Our first interaction with the Male MC, he bosses her around

2. The male MC takes a photo of Lily without asking, and two, turns it into a bleary pixelated photo and hangs it in his home!

3. A random billionaire is Lily first employee

4. Every! Single! Time they say “okay, I’m going to have a naked truth moment” and then say the most “AYO!” Thing ever

5. “Bad people do not exist “ 🚩🚩🚩🚩

6. At the end of the first conversation these people have, he says, “I want to F you.”

7. He only does one night stands, they never sleep together, so he HOUNDS after her.

8. They agree to stop seeing each other. And then keep seeing each other while he still ask her to sleep with him

9. He searched for her apartment building, for idk how many hours, so he could get down on his knees! And beg Lilly to sleep with him!

10. He got down! On his knees! Wrapped his arms around her waist , and BEGGED! Lily to sleep with him.

11. She said “sure. “ Lily took an hour shower, and when she went to her room! He ! Fell! Asleep!

12. He is a doctor that works to much, a fact, not a red flag, I have no problem with this

13. Lily writes in a diary like they are letters to Ellen.

14. Lily first crush is a homeless man (Atlas) who she falls in love with, who is idk, a 17-18 year old. She! Is 15!

15. Atlas and Lily garden together, and when he finds out that there is cow poo in the mulch, Atlas proceeds to smier his hands on Lilly. Which! Turns her on! She ! Is still! 15!!!

16. The Ryle and Allysa get into an argument, and she is trying to warn Lilly about Ryle and he get into an “pre argument” then leaves he room all grumpy and go to the other room to scole on his phone …hate that. Very “teenage stomp away” of him. Like bro! Your! In your 30s????

17. LILY STILL WRITES TO ELLEN!!!

18. The way Lily! Does not! Explain herself at all! It the way she said “I can explain.” And then NEVER! EXPLAINS!

19. I understand that Atlas was Lily safe place, I understand why she ran to Atlas to get away from Ryle. However, 90% of Ryle and Lily arguments were because Ryle thought Lily was having an affair with Atlas. But Lily says over and over again that yes, Atlas was a big part of her life and she will always love Atlas. And then! While she is staying at his house! She admits that she still loves Atlas in a romantic way after her and Ryle separate. I’m not making excuses for Ryle cuz he is an abusive man who would always jump to conclusions at the drop of an hat. But Lily never explains herself, never says “oh this tattoo? I got this because you of Atlas” or “oh these journals? I wrote in them when I meet Atlas.” She never had to explain herself of why she kept all of these stuff, you don’t have to explain why you still hold onto things that gave you comfort in a hard time in your life. However! When you are married. When you are in a committed relationship. And there is the smallest of doubt in your partners mind about an Ex, EXPLAIN YOURSELF SO AN ARGUMENT IS NOT BLOW OUT OF PROPORTION! yes Lily. Of course Ryle is going to jump to conclusions! Yes he is going to care! His actions are not excusable! But you can not blame the way his thought pattern went when he keeps finding things that are from Atlas in your house, on your phone, on the kitchen freaken door! And not expect your partner to explain themselves!

20: SHE NAMES THE BABYS MIDDLE NAME DORY!

21. SHE ASKS FOR A DIVORCE RIGHT AFTER SHE GIVES BRITH! TIME! AND PLACE!

22. Colleen, dear, why, is your one gay character reaching into Lily dress to adjust her bra and dress, WHOM! Lily says, “we don’t hang out.” WHY! Is his hand in her dress anywhere near lilies boobs!

It really bugs me how Blake being a civil rights leader, or at least being interested in Faunus liberation, just became irrelevant after volume 5,

Especially since the “happy ending” we leave the white fang on is that ghirah is in charge again, even tho they literally showed us an example of when is was too passive in his methods, yet going back to his status quo is shown as a good thing unequivocally,

Then we go to atlas, the kingdom responsible for Adam’s brand and the death of Illia’s parents, and Blake makes no effort whatsoever,

Yet NOW they decide to bring the white fang back for the vacuo arc, vacuo, the kingdom said to lack any systemic racism,

To be honest, I think pretty much everything related to the White Fang plotline was fumbled from the beginning, and iirc even the writers have admitted they dropped the ball with that storyline. I appreciate their willingness to try to tell that type of story even if they aren't comfortable with it, but I'm not impressed with the execution and I think that by Volume 5 they were kind of looking for a way to push it out of the narrative as best they could.

I think the way the story was presented led to a lot of people assuming that the lesson the writers wanted them to take away was "violent protest is always bad, only advocate for change in socially acceptable ways", which is kind of... the opposite of how protesting is supposed to work. Protesting is meant to serve as a warning to the people in power that they better start fixing things before they suffer the consequences, which Ghira's approach... does not accomplish. No idea if this is what we were supposed to get out of this or not, but I can see why a lot of people did and were unsatisfied with it.

I really think they wasted Sienna Khan. My God. They really created a 6-foot catgirl with a whip and then killed her off after 2 minutes of screentime. Truly a tragedy.

There was just... so much more they could have done with her. Like, yeah, we get a bit more out of her in the Adam character short, where seeing her serve as a corrupting influence on Adam was interesting, but I think the "wasted potential" argument applies far more accurately to Sienna than it ever did to Adam. To start with, we could have used her to explore the change in the White Fang's methods and how it affected Blake. There's still so much we don't know about the transition from Ghira's leadership to Sienna's. Since it happened roughly five years before the start of the series, Blake would have been around 12 at the time. How did she manage to stay with the White Fang when Sienna took over from Ghira? Why did her parents allow it (or why couldn't they prevent it)? What was going through her head when she chose to defy her father's ideals before she was even technically a teenager? How did the transition of power work? Did Sienna promise to take care of Blake in exchange for Ghira not making a fuss? I have no idea, and I likely never will. I don't think the narrative is really going to return to the White Fang's history, which is kind of a pity because the White Fang was integral to Blake's personal growth and development and I think that should've been explored more.

Anyone who follows my RWBY posts knows I'm heated about the way Blake got so little to do in the Atlas arc, so I'm not gonna go on that rant yet again, but yeah, she should've been one of the two most important heroic characters in Volumes 7 and 8 along with Weiss. Fighting for Faunus equality is Blake's biggest storyline in the whole damn series, and yet somehow when they arrive at Atlas, the Kingdom the narrative has been associating the most closely with racism and discrimination since Volume 1, Blake fades into the background and Nora becomes the champion of Mantle for some reason. There are so many negative events in Atlas that have already been connected to Blake, and yet she never engages with any of that during the part of the story where it would make the most sense for her to do so. This and not letting Yang talk to Ironwood about their disabilities are really the two places I think Volume 7 dropped the ball, and I really wish we'd gotten another Atlas Volume to fit more development and worldbuilding in.

Are they even bringing back the White Fang for the Vacuo arc? All I really remember is Ilia learning that Atlas is under attack and getting a call from Ghira, so while I wouldn't be surprised to see the White Fang show up in the Vacuo storyline in some capacity, I'm not convinced they'll be super important. That said, I have not been paying a lot of attention to the Volume 9 news, so maybe there's something I missed.

- Look at him... my son... - He has a good redemption arc - he and his sister are evil lesbian and redeemed gay guy??? - has a straight canon ship but should’ve been with Sokka this boy is gay - I Want To Protect Him - That’s literally it - he has a cool uncle and his dad sucks  - people ship him with Katara and I Do Not Get It that’s his sister in law except not really - “We don’t trust Zuko’s change of heart” [the next day] “so Zuko is my closest friend now,”  - His dad was like “fuck up the avatar to prove your worth to me” and Aang was like “counter argument you already have worth and we should fuck up your dad” and I think that’s beautiful - he becomes the fire man and he’s very good at it - Zuko for President 2020 - in the words of myself, half an hour ago: “ I was like "that kid with the burn on his face seems like a sad but then happy mlm who needs found family" and I was RIGHT” - took too long to find a happy picture of him :( Zuko rights NOW please - His mother’s story got compared to an OC of mine and all I can say is oh no and they deserve better based on that alone - I have had Zuko for five minutes but if anything else happens to him I will kill everyone in this throne room and then myself

I have many opinions on your writing so have multiple answers! Also sorry if the short hand for your fic titles looks weird

1. A tie between "An Exercise in Understanding" and "The Atlas and The Avid Reader". TAATAR is extremely emotional & beautiful & heartfelt & honestly is one of those "I accept this as canon" kinda fics, but AEIU is really funny & the voices are so accurate (also I'm a lil biased cuz I was not expecting such a great fic in response to my ask haha)

6. Obviously the "There you are" from "There's Sunshine in Your Smile" is iconic, however I think so often about the lovegram scene, idk if you made it up first or saw it elsewhere but after reading your fic I decided it was a canon detail that scrolls can send those and they're as big of a scene as that

& 13. I've rec'd AEIU a few times pretty recently! Tho if I ever get asked for Huntlow recs I'll definitely suggest TSIYS & TAATAR as well cuz they're very good, even tho I feel like TSIYS was many fans' first Huntlow fic

You are the fucking BEST 💕

1.) I appreciate somebody telling me Excercise is their favourite. That fic deserves her moment in the sun. Its so silly and I didn't spend too long on it but it has DARIUS in it!! I reread it recently and was like "wow I like this one actually." I had forgotten that I liked it

6.) I came up with the lovegram thing while thinking about scrolls. Like scrolls are just so basically phones in ~Magical~ wallpaper so I was just tryna come up with some magic stuff that would set them apart as their own thing. Also I really wanted something to completely fucking embarrass the absolute shit out of Hunter right out of the gate of that fic and the lovegram seemed like the most obnoxious terrifying overly cutesy method of doing so. Plus him and Willow bumping into each other normally just wasn't enough. I needed chaos.

13.) Thank you for fighting the good fight for Excercise in Understanding. I'm delighted that you're still getting some mileage out of it. And thank you to you and everyone else who refuse to let Sunshine and Atlas fade into obscurity. It's a persistence that I greatly appreciate because writing new fics to stay relevant is hard.
