Jily circa 1977, for @moonstainn's marauders era 70s outfit challenge! I had sooo much fun with this - I think this is the first time that James has made an appearance on this account, and I actually based his shirt and jacket on a photo of my dad in the 70s, which was super fun. Love a contrast stitching moment!

The other reason this was so fun is that I'm like one of those annoying historical fashion people but only for like, the 70s thru 90s, lol. I think late 70s fashion can sometimes get lost in the shuffle between the groovy early 70s and the neon 80s, so I really wanted to showcase it here, since that's the era in which James and Lily come of age. From what I've seen, late 70s fashion is less bell bottoms and fringe, and more cuffed jeans, knee-high boots, and furry jackets with big shoulders (perhaps a precursor to the shoulder pads of the 80s...?).

I can't resist rambling on about this, but I'll do everyone a favor and put it (as well as all of my references/inspo!) under the cut:

These are street style pics from 1977 London, taken by Derek Ridgers, and they're such a big influence on how I imagine Lily. You can see that the styles are starting to shift from the hippie fashion of the late 60s/early 70s – at this point there were a lot of these huge fuzzy jackets, cowl neck sweaters, layered zip-ups, and knee-high boots under midi skirts.

A few photos of some women whose fashion specifically inspired me for this drawing. The top row is all Kate Bush – there are a ton of photos of her from around this time and she looks quite similar to how I imagine Lily – and she rocks those tall boots (+ midi skirt combo). The bottom row is Isabelle Huppert (who I have considered as a time-accurate Lily fancast lol, although I'm uncertain of the exact dates of these photos). Her jacket in the first pic definitely inspired me for Lily, and I don't think I've ever seen someone look so cool in a scarf before...!

The other big trend I noticed (from looking through a million pictures of bands I like from this time) is the proliferation of cuffed jeans! What was up with these giant cuffs? Once I started looking for them, I noticed them everywhere. Tbh they're a nice way to add a fun little extra detail to a character's outfit. And I must mention that in the second photo (featuring the Buzzcocks), the guy on the right (John Maher) is pretty much EXACTLY how I imagine James to look. There's like no other pictures of him in those glasses tho! So unfortunate.

Anyway! I adore 70s fashion, and even though there are definitely similarities throughout the whole decade, late 70s fashion has its own unique trends that I hoped to bring some attention to here. Especially because it's basically the golden age for Marauders fans lol. Of course this is not comprehensive (far from it!), but I wanted to share my thoughts, and I hope it was at least a little informative or inspiring. anon here, excited to read the essay! i asked you because i really like your takes and i see people in the more canon-adjacent parts of the marauders fanbase to complain about the extremes of the fanon one, though personally ive never really seen anything Too extreme, tho thats probably just tantamount to how well i curate my spaces i suppose (ive seen people say that fanon makes remus really “alpha” or makes sirius “bimbofied” and while ive seen hints of those extremes here and there, mostly it looks like it varies from person to person. ive just seen remus be more assertive than he probably is in canon, or sirius being more dramatic and “fem” than he probably is in canon). from what i know people like exaggerating events (the prank, etc.) or shifting some personality traits, but i dont really think thats a bad thing - i personally enjoy it. as long as they dont completely turn characters into stereotypes (though its a pitfall of every fandom, i fear), then whatever its just camp.

people are allowed to criticize stuff like that though, not taking that away from anyone, i personally just dont really care enough to be totally accurate esp since this hyperfix is kind of the bottom of the barrel for me LMAO. but i ask mostly bc im just curious to see what other peoples opinions are, and bc i think - especially in a fanbase like this - that its incredibly important to be at least a little critical with your media experience and reflect on it. saying “oh fuck canon we’re just having fun” is fine and all, i dont think anyone is stopping you, i think the personalities people have made up for characters that have zero screen time are super fun and the little ships are not everyones tea but like its fine. but even still, people should be way more aware of what characters theyre dealing with and from what franchise, and like reflect on any biases you may have. if youre making shit up for a random DE character, or retconning some sutff, okay, whatever, but be sure to not defend or like suddenly turn to really weird rhetoric. idk i think its the bare minimum in a fanbase like this

hello anon, I'm sorry I lost your ask. I was writing on my laptop and saved the draft (but apparently had to press on alt, and didn't do it) so I basically lost your question and half of my initial response. Ty for sending in another ask!! Not a bother at all, i find this very lovely :D 

I was mortified to find that someone who isn't really a part of the fandom was perceiving me while I was complaining about fictional characters ahahaha. still, thank you for validating me and asking my thoughts on the mischaracterization of marauders!! I do talk about it daily, unfortunately, and without any prompt too. I'll try to gather all my thoughts here. I don't necessarily come across fanon as much as I did when I reentered the fandom and honestly, I can not be more with you about curating your space !! at the end of the day, I am just here to have fun, and really, pointing out these issues is not a good time at all! But I do post a lot about these, I can't be bothered to bottle up any thoughts lol.

I think the major issue I have with current interpretations is the underlying bigotry that comes along with it. There is a lot of unchecked problematic content that doesn't sit right with me.

Flanderizing characters in fandom interpretations is not limited to marauders fandom obviously. any popular media will face this because so many of us want to interact with one character so their traits are simplified for easier consumption and to find a common ground. this is also not limited to new marauders fandom. even in the older era, leather jacket-wearing, motorbike-driving quintessential bad boy siruis was a thing. so I won't nitpick on silly simplifications.

I just want to say that this isn't about me wanting everyone to have the same interpretations as I do about the canon. I follow so many lovely people and I don't agree with all of their posts. But, we all just simply share the love for these characters in the text and form an imaginary community. So, if we were to remove all the issues I will mention, it is still very well possible to have different personal takes.

Here are some of my issues:

Queerness, Gender roles, and misogyny:

My biggest problem is the representations of queer relationships. the fandom packages these couples in a strange and obvious heteronormative mold where the individuals fit into male and female gender roles. mlm and wlw are now an “f/m”* stereotype and characterization gets affected by the ships. Heterosexual relationships shouldn't have these limitations either, anyway. There is no one way to be a woman or a man. With queer relationships in particular, we have reclaimed the word queer now but it was used to describe the unconventional weirdness in the relationship. We didn't fit into the normal portrayal of a loving relationship. So, it really bothers me, even in fiction, that queer ships are popularly consumed in a way that represents a traditional template. (*this is not about gender itself but the gender roles! f/m can very well be queer!). 

Let's take the biggest victim in this fandom: sirius.

Sirius’ portrayal concerning his gender and sexuality has heavily changed his characterization in the fanon. We have a character who is popularly headcanonned as trans and is it a coincidence that all their traits have changed from the og material? Sirius is suddenly vain, whiny, and dumb. Canon doesn't suggest this interpretation, it has to have stemmed from somewhere. It's the implicit bias. Sirius becomes a caricature of what a woman “should be”. When we focus on sexuality, there is the suddenly short twink sirius who has the same new traits- proving the point of fulfilling gender roles. These characteristics are a stand-in for the “female” role of the traditional relationship and it becomes more clear in the example of new age wolfstar. Remus is now the big alpha stoic manly man- the obvious stand-in for the “male” role. I could go on, it is apparent in the way you can see remus becomes a caretaker and sirius is taken care of.

The point I am trying to make is not to discourage gender/sexuality hc. I love them, keep them coming. But, why is female sirius not tall suddenly? It is not inherently bad at all to have a feminine and masculine pairing! But why do we need to change the constitutions of these characters to consume their relationship?

I'll keep dropping disclaimers because I hate being misinterpreted: I don't obviously mean every single person is doing this or that doing one of the things means doing the other too. 

Race:

It is related to the point above. I was personally so excited to see the popular desi james hc. Even in fanon, I have never seen such a prevalent and encouraged brown rep, it was quite sweet to come back to that. But the problem is the change of characteristics that comes with race hc. Desi james is also a manly dude who is big and buff as opposed to the white petite and delicate regulus within jegulus ship. The melanin is directly proportional to the manliness here. 

This is a propagation of race stereotypes. Maybe jegulus was a bad example because usually there are seen as blank templates. I will raise the argument that this can't be all we can come up with for blank canvases then. Either way, my point about race still stands when you repeatedly design interracial queer relationships so they fall into heteronormative roles. Anyway, same issue with wolfstar when there is a brown remus.

Canon, JKR, and hypocrisy:

Refusing to engage with source material is funny when we are picking characters out of it. the interpretations of the characters will be from their book. otherwise, they are just original characters with the same name. you can add onto the traits and a lot of the time fandom comes to a consensus regarding a few things! This is common in every fandom but I don't think I have seen such reluctance to not only critically engage with media but also shame others who do. We are surely in special circumstances with this fandom but I really do think jkr and how we navigate the fanon should be two different things.

Most of us don't condone jkr or even remotely agree with any nonsense she spews on the daily. Most of us can see the problematic nature of even consuming this media and staying in this fandom. It is one of the reasons I even left the fandom. Most of us are simply doing our best to engage carefully while distancing ourselves from her. So, it is quite laughable when some love to take the moral high ground for rejecting canon while still engaging with the same characters. (the rejection of canon in question being sirius’ height, lol)

(Sirius' height is quite a polarising fact apparently. Unfortunately, the point about height is also discussed so disingenuously. When I talk about sirius’ height, it is not really about him being 6 or 7 feet. It will not really impact my life. It is about what it represents. He is bimbofied as he becomes short. It's an issue of "WHY" again.)

Of course, this isn't an accusation of intentional bigotry from everyone here. The problem with this fandom is that the people in it tell themselves that it is progressive and to run away from the problematic creator as much as possible. We are not progressive if all we do is co-opt queer and racially diverse identities on such a superficial level. The bias manifests in subtle forms. I just wish we check ourselves from time to time, that's all. 

There is a lot of hostility when we try to discuss issues in the fanon. Things are interpreted in the most misguided way to just win the argument. Like I said in the beginning, we all just want to have a good time. That also means creating a welcoming space for vulnerable groups (especially when the same identities are used to pat yourselves on the backs for inclusivity points). I didn't even cover everything btw, I just wrote about the issues that concern me. queer and poc also partake in biased representations, I also probably have some biases that I didn't identify yet. I just think it would be super neat if everyone tried to make an effort to unlearn and engage with media without hurting anyone. 

I have other issues but they are all just super subjective opinions and smth I can ignore when others do. ex: I really don't like giving tragic backstories to bigots in the story. Not every supremacist loser has a trauma that forced them into oppressing people! There is also "tropeyfication" of all major ships. Just an overall issue in the reading world I think, though.

Anon, I didn't mean to make it preachy in any way btw. You probably asked for a silly little rant and I went full lecture mode, so I apologize for the tone shift!! I mentioned these because every other issue can be brought down to these imo. Like you said, I also don't have any fixation on everything being canon-compliant. I only complain by asking about the thought process behind certain kinds of changes, if that makes sense! I hope this wasn't a drag really and you can see where I am coming from. FORGOTTEN LAND'S SECOND ANNIVERSARY :3

I AM SOOOO BACK

I started this drawing yesterday around afternoon and finished it just a few minutes earlier.

I went with a messier type of drawing instead of more clean like the elfilin one from yesterday, i find it fun doing it like this, mostly cause i dont have to worry about making it perfectly so i dont get as frustrated as normal. Id place this one as my second best digital drawing. im pretty sure i havent posted what i consider my best digital drawing here, tho i do have it in instagram, i might post it here one day, tho these two are way too tied up, i love how this came out, its not exactly like how i imagined it but its really close to it, and also itd say that since i dont tend to play around lighting that much, this was such a joy to draw and i cant help but stare at it a lot, at least until i start hating it because i made quite a lot of errors. i also changed my elfilis gijinka just a tad bit from last time, but its not that big of a difference, mostly.

ofc i had to draw elfilis for forgotten land's anniversary, i tend to deny it in my head but yeah they're my fave of the kirby characters even tho i hate them a bit. I wanted to draw some more doodles, like, elfilis eating cake, kirby car, a bunch of other stuff (not elfilin cuz i already drew him yesterday) but when i tried i couldnt draw anything more, guess this drawing burned me out a lot, huh?

you can definitly tell i spent all the efforts on him cuz if you look a bit closer to the bottom part you'll see its almost barely detailed, but i mean, they're the focus so make sense i guess for me not add that much detail there. um also, maybe because i dunno i had OVER 130 LAYERS jeez no wonder firealpaca was slowing down so much, i need to manage my layers better next time, tho i did do something i keep forgetting, wich is naming them (most of them at least) that was a real life saver

Also, antares (fecto elfilis' spear/cadaceus), as always, was a pain to draw, but this time its probably been draw the most accurate out of every other drawing ive made with it in it, i didnt notice it was like, a little curved when it reached the blade

fun fact! actually, this is technically a redraw, somewhere around between february and march i started a fecto elfilis drawing for the first anniversary, but i couldnt finish it in time, and i never finished it

also his wings are like that cuz i did not want to draw the pattern, its way too hard, i literally copy pasted it, wait, i was talking about the 2024 version but i looked at the 2023 one and i just noticed it also has the pattern copy pasted, i guess some stuff never changes since i still abuse the ctrl+c ctrl+v to this day

Also i ended up making a huge error there, i was planing to add the phantom spears from orbital pulsar (the attack he does first when you battle them at lab discovera) but theres an innacuracy, when they do the attack, they always close their eyes, i had actually sketched him (well i mean both these drawings are basically the first sketch (2023) or second sketch(2024) with some color, shadows and lighting. i didnt do lineart in the 2024 one cuz i wanted to be a bit like the og i made (too bad i sketched that one with black since the og was sketched with white due to me drawing the bg first)) with his eyes closed but them decided to make them open for a reason i cant remember, maybe i thought itd look nicer? idk

ive had the idea of redrawing this for quite some month now so it was kinda already planned

I really love katfl, like a buncha whole lot, its basically almost my first mainline kirby game. 100% the demo, finished the game in almost one day, i literally play it monthly, like, every month i put the card in my switch, start it up, get morpho sword, and go shred elfilis in lab discovera. i would probably not even be here on tumblr and the kirby fandom if it werent for it. and i love it so much i genuinly cannot express how much i like it and treasure it with words or anything

— note: this story has been in my drive for 3 years, even tho this is the first piece on my account. i even had a timeline at the bottom of my draft to make sure war dates and stuff lined up hehe. it's O.K. if this doesn't do well since i'm writing for fun, but i'm happy i got at least part one of this out! then i can finally put this series to rest. i’m sorry that this kinda introductory part doesn’t have many interactions with chanyeol yet. i want to accurately convey the reader’s relationship with sehun before i make it fall apart :)

Girls like you loathe compliance but act it, anyway. You go against rules and you wear two faces, but you’re still compliant because nobody knows. Nobody suspects a thing, and you’ll keep it that way.

There’s not much to it, really: keep your papers in neat stacks, your dollars in even neater stacks, and your mouth shut. It’s a commitment, but it's applicable to the art of both compliance and not. That’s how this town runs. Girls like you are compliant.

Lately, alcohol traffic has been wedging tension into champagne bottles ready to pop, like faulty cork stoppers. Tenfold, and you’ve seen it. Tons of progeny craft succumbing to the paradigm of unrelentless violations of law, but you swore to never break the rules. That includes even the unspoken ones, like knowing to not mess with the neighborhood weirdo, Mr. Park.

Technically, you were just helping your best friend Sehun deliver night mail. It’s part of his job. 

“What a hound,” Sehun pants, steadying himself by gripping the fabric layering over your shoulder with calloused hands. Orphically, his brown irises are suddenly void of any liveliness. He’s exasperated, pupils fitfully blown out wide, the onyx barrier warped in various ways. Ways that make him look wild, more unimaginably feral than the manor overgrown with vines and rusted trellises in front of you.

 “I gummed up the works on this one,” he coos, lowly. Sehun’s arm parts from your shoulder to clutch his heart, breath hitching. He shudders, even in the cooling night zephyr. “Guess your momma was right all along,” he breathes. Mimicking a high-pitched voice, “stop hanging out with Sehun! He’s a neighborhood no-good nick who delivers mail for a few cents!”

You grin, wide. “So?”

Sehun looks at you like a stray pet. “Town mail won’t deliver itself,” you offer. "You’re an author, too, delivering your own work. That’s important. Don’t say useless things to me, Sehun.” The tone of the night becomes less tense. Smirking, you continue: “relax, then tell me what happened in that freak’s house.”

Your teeth bite down on your tongue, eyes narrow and reflecting the moonlight. 

You don’t know why you’re expecting a longer, well thought-out response from the Sehun you’re looking at right now. His short hair damp from the sweat and mild rain, parted in awkward tranches - you’re not used to comforting him, although it feels good to be the one seeing Sehun vulnerable, for once.

While you’re waiting for Sehun to rearrange his thoughts, you run your hand against the bars of iron separating you from the front yard of the manor. The sounds are a symphony of metal clink-clanks against your graceful nails, free of overgrown cuticles or ragged whites, unlike Sehun’s. The bars are hollow iron, but their wounds are merely rusted scratches, like they don’t give in over the years. 

Neither does Sehun.

Lazed back. Real lazy. Doesn’t like thinking about what he is, why he is, who he is. He’s thought about it before; things like whether or not cabbage was really nutritious (it’s just water), whether or not he wanted to be a writer forever, whether or not he should tell you about the car shop home, whether or not he loved you more than just a friend. 

It’s fated, and so he doesn’t bother to delve deeper than what he needs to know. He just knows that it’s all bliss when he’s with you. And he knows that he’s in love with this life: the rush, the fights, hell, he had almost forgotten his dad was a cop. Just like magnets, though polar opposites, you stick together. Late night escapades into the apple of the town was just another habit branded deep into your history.

He feels like laughing at his own inanity, so he parts his lips, but not even the chuckle at the edge of his throat makes it past. Something irks him uncomfortably about what happened tonight, so he clears his gullet filling up with phlegm and blames the bright waning moon. It used to be so full of itself, now only a needle in the vista expanse of night. Sehun breathes harder now, because he realizes that they’re not so different.

Sehun finally speaks: “Well, I just tried to throw the freak his mail. But I think I set off his flares, doll. Mr. Park - he’s really a bent man, broken after the war. There was an iron on his hip, a-and as soon as I saw it leave his belt loop, I didn't have a doubt that he’s not wicked.”

Sehun’s joints ache uncomfortably despite wherever he shifts his weight toward, so he leans against the tall wire fence guarding the manor. He feels an ivy trickle down the nape of his neck everytime he tilts his head to the side. Nuances here, nuances there. Last time you both were out here, there weren’t any ivies. Were there?

Mr. Park stands leaning back, intently listening from the arch door frame that separated his balcony from his quarters.

These kids talk so loudly, he thinks, he could hear your entire exchange from up here. The yellow cast light from his bedroom fights with the dark to illuminate his figure carefully in the night, but he knows that you’re both still unable to see him from the ground angle. He feels slightly creepy, standing there in his satin dress shirt and work jeans. He pulls out his gun one more time, loosely, just to swing it. 

Feeling watched, you decide that you both shouldn’t be there any longer. Sehun’s teeth grind against each other eagerly for a taste other than his own metallic blood being drawn. Yawning, his mouth goes dry and his throat parches, longing for the feeling of smoke in his lungs.

Sehun knows he shouldn’t smoke around you. He doesn’t want to ruin your innocence, but he can’t help it. He wishes he had better self-control and restraint, but even so, you were clearly too much of a goody-two-shoes to care. “Drop dead Sehun, are you stupid? How’d he get a gun in this old town? Those are so hard to even-”

“Everybody knows they’re prohibited, doll. It must be ‘cause he’s a veteran, the govs decide that they don’t need to necessarily establish regulations with them,” Sehun glances up back at the house. You know he’s just said a bunch of nonsense.

“Somethin’ like that,” he continues. “Like it’s any work.” He almost scoffs, reaching into his pocket upon instinct. He doesn’t notice, but you’re intently watching. 

You follow his hands well, when he rubs the nape of his neck and pulls out a Marlboro from his tattered satchel. Same satchel that’s been long worn with dirt and grease but vacant of textbooks, pencils, or really a real use, ever since the start of freshman year in college. Sehun still stands that it serves purpose in his mail business. 

He shuts his eyes tight as he lights it between his lips, drawing out the smoke for as long as he can. It blows away in the wind, but you scrunch your nose, in the contingency it dissolves in your nostrils.

You pressed Sehun for more: “Don’t you care that Mr. Park’s gonna smell the smoke? His window’s open and he could still be on his balcony for all we know,” you advise him, worried. “And what’s Mr. Park doing with a gun at this hour, anyway? You could see it from the ground? Should we rat him out?”

Sehun shrugs, not letting on much. 

The smoke ignites something in you, you think. “Sehun, answer me! Isn’t this technically trespassing? Shouldn’t we leave now? All that stuff you said about Mr. Park’s makin’ me nervous.”

He finally feels free and empty of apprehension when he lets go of the cigar, balanced between his lips. He feels powerful. But before he can halt the smile that plays at the curve of his mouth, he chuckles a dry, derisive laugh laced with smoke. “Just decided to be nice this week and stop skippin’ his address on the newspaper list for once. Only trespassin’ if we go beyond his door, these front gates bind nothing,” Sehun smirks. “You should know that by now.”

Thin to a whisper, you display a frown. “I don’t hop as many fences as you. Who knows what else this Park guy has, he’s the real deal, gat and all. You should know that before you do anything else, you fool.”

But he grins right back, and he grins wide. “I should? How touché.” 

When he proves satisfied with the gasper, Sehun withdraws the smoke from between his lips and thrusts it toward the grass. It doesn’t burn the damp grass, barely at all. Just tucks itself neatly in a pile of dandelions, the tarnished flame still warmer than the muted yellows surrounding it.

Quickly, almost lunging himself off, Sehun hoists his body up from the iron gate and firmly turns his heel on the cigar, smiling. 

 And when he lifts up his shoe, even under the dim haze of the moon, you can see that the mud has been imprinted deep into the design on the sole of his shoe and the weeds have been stomped flat, butt of the cigar crushed. He finally lifts his eyes to converge with yours and he deadpans, “You know, you’re gonna want a smoke one day, too,” pausing. “Finally want one, doll?”

Doesn’t Sehun know how to properly take care of a girl?

His hand lazed onto your shoulder leaning on the gate post, your eyes glued to the dirt. He wants you to look up, but his gaze is the only thing holding you down. You can’t break free from his glare, lidded and dazed. 

Last night’s rain drips down the manor’s primary parapet beam. A premonition?

“I don’t need more mess in my life right now.” You hadn’t intended for it to come out so harsh and raspy, but Sehun didn’t pay much attention to it.. “Your parents are too pliant, Sehun.”

Mr. Park sighs a breath of relief. You can take care of yourself. He runs a stiff, left hand through his hair. He wouldn’t have to think about Sehun taking advantage of your company. He quietly hums an incisive tune, like a victory sequence. 

“Give it a try. I know your momma doesn’t like me so much anymore, thinkin’ we’re doin-this and doin-that. You don’t gotta do anything you don’t want to, alright?” He reassures you, something you’re grateful for. “I’m just saying, you can’t be such a high-pillow all the time and expect fun. Even if we landed in jail, my dad’d let us out,” Sehun tilts his head down to hide his smile under his breath, giddy.

“I’m not a high-pillow! Can’t we just go to the next address now?”

Ignoring your question, he’s totally replaying the scene over and over in his head. In his pocket, Sehun crosses his middle over his index. He did not like the feeling of mild defeat. At a weak attempt to cure his frustration, his hand rubs at his forehead. Instead, he’s inundated by the dewy sweat collecting at his brow. How could I let Chanyeol scare me off like that? 

You change the subject. Softer, quieter, your voice barely cuts through the air. “Sehun?” Your voice seems to awaken him a bit. Quickly, he mutters underneath his breath, “huh? What?” His mouth parts uncomfortably, small drops of rain collecting on his bottom lip and cupid's bow. 

“You look like tonight’s over. We can walk home now, you’re very pale.”

Sehun responds, an equally modest, “I’m okay.” Insisting, “let’s hang out a little longer,” pausing to offer a smile. “Gumshoe.”

A smile peels your lip open. “Oh yeah?”

Acquiescently, he smiles. “Oh yeah.”

“Then let’s get out of here.”

Sehun winces. “Not yet. Don’t bleed anything against me, ‘kay detective?”

Sehun steadies himself against the tall iron fence again, and it hits him like cold deja vu against his spine. The metal presses deeper into the valleys of his back this time like a knife, but still, he doesn’t move. Instead, he lets it cave against his skin even more, jutting through the fabric of his dress shirt. He takes another look at the smothered cigarette hidden in the grass and laughs a hearty laugh. All he smells is ash and wet dew.

And then, rather obscenely, it comes crashing down on him like dead weight. 

“You know, Chanyeol pulled the gun on me first, looking down on me from that balcony. Then tauntingly, he pointed it back toward himself. What would you do?” Sehun says honestly, turning to face you.

“His blown out eyes wide, but completely still. I’m so pissed that I was scared. Fuckin’ embarrassin’.” he grumbles, matter of factly, a frown thin between his lips as if he’s proven his own point wrong.

“Chanyeol?”

Fuck! “Oh, yeah. That’s his first name. Chanyeol. It means ‘loser’ in the ‘i-can’t-get-any-girls’ language.”

Chanyeol quirks a brow, leaning onto the side railing, still hidden. 

You can’t help but snort. “And why would he do such a thing? Was his tongue stickin’ out too?”

It’s hard to tell where the fabrication starts, but with a pat to your head and a hum in validation, Sehun opens his mouth to protest. “What makes you think he wouldn’t? He’s the town freak.”

Shrugging, you scan the line of trees enveloping the path down the hill. “No, I mean that he was makin’ fun of you with that face.”

 “Sure,” he nods. “But you cannot twist the truth, and the truth is all I’ve been telling you. Don’t you see? That’s creepy, he was pointing the rod at himself. I didn’t want to be responsible in case he actually pulled it, so I left, but now I know that he has no limits. He was ready to die, [Y/N]. This guy’s got no girls, and he’s creepy. You should stay away from him.”

Sehun’s story is like a leaky faucet. It holds enough truth to be believable, but somewhere in the piping, it doesn’t go over well with you. But you believe him. 

Your mind becomes numb and somber for a moment, but the feeling is botched. As if the anesthesiologist didn’t know better, unable to properly administer the drug, and you could still recall Sehun’s words in your head. They lay heavy on your heart, yet you’re not prosaically thinking into the consequences, at all.

Maybe Mr. Park wasn’t as insane as the town recalled him to be. Sehun suddenly speaks. “What a crumb, huh? I don’t think that man’s has mercy on anyone, not even himself.” 

An epiphany makes you feel sick, like a bully. Kids swirl baseless rumors around him. “What are you implying? That he’s lonely and lonely people are crazy?”

“I mean, yeah. He’s a vet, after all. What’s surprising?”

“Listen, you - I mean, Mr. Park, he-he doesn’t have the motive. Stop giving him motives. Rumors say he studied business after his discharge from the draft. That manor of his is built on years of liquified assets, why would he put it all on the line?”

Mr. Park stifles a laugh. You’re defending him. 

Sehun shuts his eyes to think, and for a second you think he’s going to reach into his bag for another cigar, but you think he’s really thinking this time. Sehun definitely knows he is; maybe it’s the lingering tobacco in his throat, maybe it’s the aftershock of what he just said, but he’s really thinking, fitfully. “I - I don’t know, [Y/N]. Maybe he deserves it, for all the people he’s killed.”

A flicker of candlelight moves in your peripheral vision. You nervously glance up at the manor’s ridiculously high arch windows, and wince in horror as the orange glow casted on the balcony shifts. It’s dimmer this time, because there is quite clearly someone blocking the light.

 And the silver alloy shotgun in their grasp gleams under the lunar projection, very, very jeeringly. 

They stand there, eerily forlorn. Lacking real tone or emotion, barren. A machiavellian with a .357 in the limelight pointed dejectedly at the ground. The candlelight behind the figure filters around the silhouette like a stencil on a black canvas, a ghastly spectacle.

And as his arm rises, gun following your bodies, a ghastly spectacle, indeed. It’s hard to tell who he’s aiming at because of the distance. 

The only thing more daunting than the sight itself was the sound of silence. Sehun mutters a curse beneath his breath, beginning to crouch next to you on the dirt. You feel his hands lightly traipse your torso, yearning for your palms in the dark. He first finds your thumb, tender on your clavicle. Then your index, playing with your blouse cloth. You’re glad he doesn’t feel your heartbeat above all, otherwise he would have felt the throb of fear and the mop of tangled love strings evident in the moment. 

Instead, he squeezes your palms together and intertwines your fingers on a whim. Sweaty and scared, they mangle like ropes. He doesn’t know what he’s doing at first, but it was the only way he knew how to provide enough ease for the both of you. It always offers him a little warmth; besides, you were both in danger.

You shudder. “The cover here isn’t good enough,” you whisper. “I bet he’s been listening in on us, Sehun. You see his gat?” Your teeth are chattering now, despite the cooling atmosphere.

“I don’t know what your mama tells you dolly, but now ... we fucking run.” He wants to tighten his grip on his hands on you further and take off like that, but he knows your nature and psyche too well to do that. 

Your chattering halts, “He’s going to see us. And shoot us.” Suddenly apathetic, Sehun finally muses, “Alright. Let’s stay here until that husk of a man leaves.” He exhales, blowing the strands of black hair from his eyes, “promise.” 

Sehun was never very good with promises, and you realize that too late. The fingers caught in yours are already replaced with air and are instead wrapped around your wrist. He juts out his hip, and rises to his full stand. He’s very tall. “Sorry doll. Lied.”

Your stomach sinks. “What are you, a puppy? Do I have to pick you up myself?” He’s towering over you, height teetering past the gate that separated Mr. Park’s property from the town’s. “Sehun, get down, there’s going to be a metal shell in your head anytime now!” With a swift kick to your knee, he pulls you up from the dirt before you can even feel the jolt against your joints, and runs against the wind with you.

was reminded again about how much i HATE the shows names for the mikaelsons bc they DON’T MAKE FUCKING SENSE FOR 10TH CENTURY NORSEMEN. So i’m gonna throw out here the names i used for them on my very short lived klaus and elijah blogs (burn out is real lol). the idea here was that these were their names they were given/born with which they later change around to the ones we know them by to you know, keep up with the times a lil better.

first off the last names are now MíMISSON and MÍMISDÓTTIR because tHaT’s HoW nOrSe LaSt NaMeS wOrK.

Mímir = Mikael Mímir is a famous character in Scandinavian myth. He was a wise man and advisor to Odin who was decapitated in the Æsir–Vanir War. Odin did some witchcraft to preserve his head and now keeps it in the well at the bottom of Yggdrasil and asks him shit. It just feels like the kinda thing parents would name their kid with optimism he’d grow up Wise and favored by Odin but then he turns out Like That. Picks Mikael later on because he would be the time to associate himself with a divine messenger warrior angel who 1v1′d Satan. The prick.

Eistla = Esther Frankly the one I’m least likely to actually USE the canon name for outside of meta and general fandom talking and only for clarity reasons. Since she died in the 10th century and isn’t around again until the 21st century for a hot minute there’s really no need to figure out a new name for her. Derived from “Eist/Oast” which means like “Pyre/Embers/Fire/Etc” also the name of Jotunn.

Freya = Freya No notes for obvious reasons. Fun fact tho, Freya is just the feminine form of Freyr which means “Lord/Master” or “Fertile” which tracks with how both Freya and Freyr are associated with fertility. Freya is the Vanir goddess oflove, beauty, fertility, sex, war, gold, and seiðr (magic for seeing and influencing the future) so I mean, she’s very accurately named lol.

Finnbjǫrn = Finn Honestly again another dude who didn’t really change his name because he was in a box for 900 years but also lucked out that Finn’s both a nickname for his own name and like, A Normal Ass Name to this day. Finn usually refers to Finland/Lapland and björn/bjǫrn means “bear/warrior”. Which like honestly, yes so real, such vibes for my specialest boy.

Eylaugr = Elijah Eylaugr is the male form of Eylaug and is built from “Ey” which means “island” or “floodplain” and Laug which in old germanic means “to celebrate marriage/to swear a holy oath/to be dedicated” and is likely related to the old Norse “Laug/Log” which means “bath (in connection with religious worship)”. Likely picked Elijah due to the auditory similarity to help with like, fucking remembering it and responding to it (honestly a major factor for all of them lbr) but also keeps the holy vibes aesthetic since Elijah is a prophet and miracle worker and I think he’d appreciate that through line of like, aesthetic continuity.

Næskunungr = Nikalus Combination of “Nes” (ness/spit of land) and “Konung” (king). Old Norse neskonungr = 'ness-king', 'small-king'; one who has no more than a ness over which to rule. Which like, god SUCH A BURN EVEN FROM YOUTH. I’d just been looking for something that sounded reasonably close to “Niklaus” on an auditory level but then I saw the breakdown of the parts and was like “oh yeah, that’s Klaus”. Like you could see it as parents being like “aw little king baby :)” or “look at this napeleon complex motherfucker even before napeleon complexes are a THING” and I think that’s beautiful. Goes with Niklaus later because again, reasonably close to Næskunungr in sound and also means “Victor of the people” and I mean...... Yeah.... He’d do that.....

Ragrifridr/Ragnfríðr = Rebekah Built from “regin” (advise/decision/might/power (of the gods) ) and “fríðr” (beautiful/beloved/good/alive/peaceful/safe). She absolutely picked it for the sound and vibes and nothing else but it does mean “Moderator, To Tie, Noose, To Bind, Captivating, Strong Combatant, Hearty”. Which does feel very good for her so like, 10/10 on that front

Kolr = Kol Again another one who gets no notes. Stunning, perfect, flawless. Kol/Kolr in old Norse just means “coal” so like, lol okay I see we gave up around here I guess.

Heðinn = Henrik Heðinn means “jacket of fur or skin” in Old Norse. I’ve already given some leeway in places like Finn’s name which is more finnish than it is norwegian but I gotta draw the line somewhere and I’m doing it at Henrik’s german ass name. Again another one who would’ve never used their canon name because he’s Fuckin’ Dead. Tried to pick something was from the right rough area and sounded similar enough and then I saw the meaning of this name and was like “oh that’s some nice foreshadowing if I’ve ever seen it”.

BONUS ROUND--

Since I’m the boss now and say that Sage is from the same time period here’s a more timeline appropriate name for her too

Sannhild = Sage Built of the Old Norse: sannr (true/truthful) and “hildr” (battle/fight). Mainly picked for the auditory closeness to Sage and vibes.

found out from a tweet about the character creator in dragon's dogma II for making ocs and wowowo i like it so far!! helped a lot with trying to visualize my oc, Rhys, in a more realistic manner

it's pretty in-depth with customization. however, i will say there are some downsides-- such as you can't really fine-tune every little feature. ex: the eyes (or at least provide various eye shape options to scroll through that don't require having to change the entire base head for it).

i did also have to fight the settings a bit to get Rhys's skin complexion and tone to go together, but the bottom two pictures were the best i could do. even then, they still looked pretty light when i previewed them. (much darker tones do exist in this creator tho!! it was just tough to pull off Rhys's skin exactly for this one)

i did some editting and overpainting on the og screenshot to make it reflect their appearance more accurately, which is what you see at the top

Honestly the main beef I have with this whole snowwhite business is that i think at least forty to sixty percent of the magic that comes from the animated movie is like, the animals? that animation itself is probably the more accurate reason, I suppose. I don't know enough words to describe this accurately but i don't see how live action could capture the sheer delight of two birds wringing out a shirt, or a turtle being used as washboard, or raccoons trying to sweep dust under the rug before Snow White scolds them.

I think the animation style is just, a delight to the eyes. and cgi cant mimic that whatsoever yet unless your under a talented director that knows precisely what they are doing. and I don't think that kind of director would even work with Disney in the first place.

Unrelated but a while ago i was listening to some of the songs of the original cause i suspected that those were the most slept on songs of the famous Disney Song discography in pop culture, and something that leapt out to me in the I'm Wishing song, is that it doesn't really matter whether or not the Wishing Well is actually magic, because Snow White making a wish into a well that makes a loud echo is precisely what gets the Prince's attention, and thus, by making a genuine wish from the heart, actually made it come true, which is payed off in the end because her Prince remembers and searches for her, which also means that by making a genuine wish in faith right in the beginning of her story ensured her being found/woken up in the end of the film, which...is like really neat when you think about it. I have trouble thinking of any Disney Princess that makes an action right at the beginning of her story that ensures at least a part of their ending.

i wouldn't have realized it without finding your post laying out how cool the Original Snow White film was, so thank you.

as for the whole Snow White Live Action situation I did think a good portion of the situation was rather stupid, as when i heard that a live action was in the works I didnt even have the energy to roll my eyes becuase I honestly thought that the Mouse was scrapping the bottom of the barrel on that one. I do think that Ms. Ziegler was downright stupid about her comments and should have been far more tactful, and I also do think that a lot of the response to her comments were out of proportion. Its a shame because while i'm sure some of the response was based in pointless racism; I think a lot more of the internet response was just dumping their frustrations on Ziegler rather than the real culprit of the whole damn mess, which is the Mouse. (Also personally I have heard this chick sing and I don't think her voice matches whatsoever. tho the same can be said for plenty of the live action singing at this point.)

i really like your blog and find your writing interesting. Thank you for putting your blog out here. I don't agree with everything you write of course, but i appreciate having the chance to read them. I wrote this mostly for kicks cause i've been thinking of reaching out for awhile and i figured i might as well do it now.

I appreciate all this so much! (naturally I wonder which things you disagree with but I guess that’s neither here nor there) YES, totally, the part with the wishing well, that’s the idea! The Queen is all about disguises and tricks, and the Dwarves hide from strangers, but Snow White does neither of those things; she’s all heart all the time, and acts on faith, especially in her attitude.

I agree with you about Zegler, and I agree with you about the animation style. It’s all so good, and as the first animated feature film, it’s hard to imagine the story not animated. Everything is very soft, water-colored, and round. I don’t think any live-action attempt can come close to that while still looking…well, real!

NNT Rewatch: Episode 2

College orientation is done, Camp Nano begins in two days, and I have plenty of free time right now! So! Time to continue the rewatch!

Also I should probably say, this being a rewatch, I will talk about things that happen later both in this season and the story in general

Okay so first of all, Netflix, you're asking to skip recap when this scene wasn't in the last episode

Secondly okay then her father wasn't laid up in bed sick when she escaped, but I wonder if he encouraged her to leave on her own because he knew he was/he'd get sick, or if he knew he'd just slow her down bc. I mean. He IS old

Gotta respect the holy knights still calling him Majesty when there to arrest him and while banging on his door-

Love characters with parental-related trauma, whether it's just related to the parents or the parents caused it. And Elizabeth (though not known yet) has BOTH of those

Anyway she'll be seeing holy knights burst into her father's room in her nightmares for a long time I'm sure

Also what was that roar. Like jesus you'd think one of the new generation had transformed then and there with it-

Also also Elizabeth's dress when fleeing is actually pretty cute and separately I like that purple cloak, and I gotta remember to draw her in it at some point

It's interesting just how many demon types there are depicted in the intro (at least a huge variety in appearance) yet we don't really see a lot of them

First season it's the red and gray demons, then we see more humanoid ones (Meliodas and the commandments), and Grayroad, but then there's this hulking demon in the intro and some dragon-like ones. There's one I'm curious if it's what Galand is beneath the armor. And there's tons of - again fairly humanoid - demons in the Cursed by Light movie.

Just. I'm really curious why we had so many humanoid ones. I would've loved to see the more beastly or monstrous looking demons throughout the show more, if only because the designs look so cool

But then we also don't know how much of this art can be considered accurate since the goddesses are portrayed with only a single set of wings, so (assuming that this was art depicting stories passed down by humans) maybe none of these demons exist

It'd be really cool if they did tho

Also at the bottom we have two human armies facing against each other, one blue the other red, and supposedly fighting on their respective sides. So it's interesting to see humans being depicted to be split on who they should support in the Holy War, if anyone, kinda like what I assume was going on with Rou and the humans who attacked the Fairy King Forest in the first Holy War

One day I'll analyze the Sins' armor and how it fits to each of their characters perfectly

I just. I love the colors in this intro and every scene is just beautiful

Also Elizabeth and Meliodas, while standing hand in hand, are fairly far apart and I'm pretty sure in future intros they're MUCH closer together

Holding hands to show that their lives are intertwined/connected - hinting at the curse they're plagued with. But there's also distance between them that Meliodas is likely putting there, trying to keep Elizabeth at arms length to avoid accidentally activating the curse.

Like. Cmon. Elizabeth is closer to HAWK in the intro right there.

Alright I'm gonna be overanalyzing EVERYTHING if you hadn't caught on so here's more

In the scene they're lying in the grass Elizabeth is sleeping (or at least has her eyes closed) but Meliodas' eyes are wide open. Could be referencing how Elizabeth will die/has died but will come back (reincarnation -> sleep cycle) whereas Meliodas will continue to live (never truly dying -> awake). Like he closes his eyes for a moment then springs up, kinda like a brief respite before getting back into the thick of things

I'm definitely reading too far into it and idk if it makes sense but I'm fine with that

Too bad we don't see more of the Necropolis. I feel like it'd be interesting to explore more.

Like even if Elizabeth was just naive she's a TEENAGE PRINCESS you're telling me she doesn't know proper etiquette and what would be considered inappropriate behavior?

Meliodas just dodging her question so effectively that even when she hits the nail on the head (sorta, could what he did really be considered a crime when everyone else was dead?) he just says "well, maybe" and she just. Doesn't bring it up again I think?

Anyway I also just love the look on his face when he says maybe-

MAMA HAWK JUST DIGS DOWN AND IS GREEN AS THE GRASS AROUND HER BUT SHE DOESNT HAVE A PATH PATTERN AND THE STEPS TO THE BOAR HAT ARE FAR ENOUGH THAT THEY WOULDNT REACH THE EXISTING PATH

But also I love that there's a path leading to nowhere on this hill. Meliodas sells Vanya ale regularly from the looks of it (we see it in episode 1) so I wonder if the path is just there for when the boar hat is in town

Also it's a crime Meliodas became king of Liones

Man knows his stuff about alcohol and he seemed to actually enjoy running the tavern. He should gave just remained a bartender. He didn't even really WANT to be ruler of ANYTHING

I mean. Sir. Look at him then compare him to literally every person around you. You think he can SEE what's going on???

Also apparently I accidentally quoted Meliodas in Eternal (Gelda saying "That twigo guy" in ch 19)

Surprised we don't see more people other than Mead say they're buddies with the Sins, but at the same time it makes sense bc the Holy Knights? But like damn you telling me not one grown ass arrogant bastard decided to scare people by saying this?

I actually love a lot of the villager designs in Vanya. Like there's so many types of people (body type wise at least)!! It's great!!!!

Also! Perfect Time still playing in the background! I don't remember much about future seasons but I don't remember it playing much in more emotionally triumphant scenes rather than physical

Like the fight with the DK and even SD, while somewhat emotionally charged, were more about the physical triumph than the emotional

Perfect Time in this episode doesn't kick in until AFTER Meliodas pulls the sword and then it plays in the background, lasting until the scene changes to the Boar Hat

It was used to emphasize this as a win, because it was a win for these people's spirits and less about Meliodas' physical win

ITS CALLED THE FOREST OF WHITE DREAMS OKAY

I love the foreshadowing of Gilthunder's story, because while we don't know much about him or what the fuck that raven is and why it looks so evil, we know they're connected somehow but don't know how

Also the raven is outside observing Gilthunder, through the glass, maybe highlighting how Gilthunder is trapped under Vivian's vigilance AND how Vivian cannot truly see Gilthunder (who's in a chair blocking the view of the window and therefore letting him hide from Vivian)

That is a really nifty power of Gilthunder's and it's a damn shame we NEVER SEE HIM USE IT AGAIN

Love seeing the customers starting at Hawk in shock but also nervously lol

I do love all the foreshadowing to the curse without blatantly showing that foreshadowing

After Meliodas confirms there's something Elizabeth is meant to do, he says "And I have something that I'm meant to do" and while it's clear to people who know he's talking about how he has to break the curse to first time watchers it could mean something much different, like he's meant to protect the people or save them (because, as revealed later, that's why he's the sin of wrath - he failed to save the people of Danafor but also he's protecting THESE PEOPLE now too)

Him catching and then throwing the spear back will never NOT be epic

anyway i’ve got a little bit to say about this since,,, this was a mess to make (also im sure someones probably done this already, but i havent seen one yet)

This was a personal project of mine and I wasn’t originally going to post it, but I felt like it would be useful to some people,, please lmk if I messed anything up or made any mistakes because I 100% did not do this perfectly.

It should be obvious, but these are just the official sprites from the game and I did not draw them.

THE HEIGHT CHART

(In regards to the way I measured) Grim and all the Savanaclaw boys are measured by the top of their heads, NOT by the tip of their ears/horns. The official heights don’t specify what they measured to so I decided measuring by the top of their heads like the rest of the students makes sense. These ones are pretty much the only characters I had problems calculating their height with.

However, this makes me run into a problem such as Grim looks abnormally tall/large, but that’s probably because he’s got a chunkier body type. (we love you bby,,)

All characters are lined up by their heels, with the exception of Ortho. I measured him by the bottom of his foot because he’s a robot, and I’d imagine the platform-looking bits of his feet are connected. I believe Ortho also canonically floats slightly off the ground, but I didn’t bother accounting for that since,, I’m measuring the length of his body in comparison.

The original models are not perfectly accurate height-wise to each other, so I had to resize them. Proportions also may look slightly off because of that.

Heights are not pixel perfect, and may be slightly off.

Malleus has the tallest listed height (202cm) and that includes his horns. As such, Malleus is 193cm without his horns. Of course, proportions aren’t perfect so he looks a bit off.

this took way too long to make because i ended up realizing i calculated every single character’s heights incorrectly and made them significantly shorter than i meant so I had to go back and resize everyone lmfao (the heights should be correct now tho!!)

Malleus’s height actually includes his horns,, according to the official guidebook, malleus is 193cm without his horns. He’s pretty much the exact same height as Jack. (thanks to @/pocasu for letting me know ^^) (to be completely honest i thought it was extremely absurd that he was 6′7 without his horns but i had no frame of reference fghdgf) (EDIT: i’ve fixed his height!! For reference, Malleus is 202cm including his horns!)

I got to learn a little more in the notes. Like how she REALLY looks like her skin is made of foil lol. I did notice the cuts and the chunk of flesh missing on her right (perceived left) cheek, and how she actually has pretty much a human-like head. How she's sorta missing the bottom of her left ear and a bit of flesh in front of it. PLUS THE MARKINGS ON HER FOREHEAD AND THE ONE ON HER CHIN THAT I DIDN'T REALIZE WAS ONE

Her whole thing is the undead deck, as is pretty much the title of it, so like others have suggested, she could be a necromancer or smth, I think she is DEFO a zombie, if not anything else. She even has the mainly green hair, and all the flesh wounds. Ngl her hair makes me think of one of those ROBLOX ones, aside from the poly look the scrybes got goin' on

Plus she kinda metal/rockin' tho, she has fingerless gloves and purple nails :D She really goth(?), purple eyeshadow and lip color and stuff, and then the skulls, love her for having some of my fav colors I would absolutely have a physical "lifesize" model of her just for Halloween, and then I keep it for when I eventually get a building of my own that I can decorate how I want >:3

Also. It's as if I was doing a timed drawing challenge lol, 1 hour 10 minutes 1 minute XD Which, to be fair, is sorta accurate except it's more like 2-4 hours, 5-10 min, 1 min (gotta include them ranges)

for all of its cheesiness and the fact that it was made like a decade earlier, the league of extraordinary gentlemen movie is the opposite of the avengers movie (the first one)

-the avengers features characters from different stories and you probably would not get the movie if you didn’t watch those. LXG features characters from different stories but because they are public domain they are recognizable enough; knowing the original stories adds an extra layer of flavor but the story stands on its own without problems.

-the avengers has a war profiteer as the main character. lxg has a war profiteer as the villain.

-the avengers has an imperialistic warmonger who spends most of the movie being disrespectful and smug towards everyone else as the tech guy. LXG has a victim of imperialism who is respectful and tolerant to the rest of the cast as the tech guy. also South Asian steampunk as an aesthetic is way cooler than than elon musk shit.

-the avengers has the helicarrier (who gets shot at and almost falls to the ground), lxg has the nautilus (who gets a bomb planted and almost sinks to the bottom of the ocean). the nautilus is cooler tho.

-the avengers has a poor little meow meow pathetic scientist man with questionable morals who becomes a body horror abomination, and it’s CONSTANTLY rubbed on his face even though said abomination isn’t actively evil. lxg has a poor little meow meow pathetic scientist man with questionable morals who becomes a body horror abomination and at least gets treated with a bare minimum of decency since said abomination is, while actively evil, you know, a person who can understand when he’s being treated okay-ish-ly.

-also technically LXG has canon gay characters since one member of the cast is canon bi in the material, as in the original book. another member of the cast was implied to be bi (also in the original book, making her bi in all adaptations by default sorry I don’t make the rules), and another member of the cast is the closest thing the nineteenth century would ever get to a gay male lead (again in the book! we don’t talk about the comics, Alan Moore was homophobic as shit)

Author's Notes: First time writing in a second, but this idea popped up and I couldn't quite let it go, so this is a tentative series. My first one too sooooo yay! If any of yall remember a while back I posted a snippet I had written of an unnamed story, well this is the start of that! SO I hope you enjoy. Feedback is always appreciated! :)

‘Education is everything in this world. It is fundamental to establishing yourself, your family, your career, your magic, your everything. People pay close attention to everything you do while in school; no matter how big or small you see your school, there’s always a professional looking for a young witch, wizard, or warlock to snatch and mold into a new someone. With that being said, I encourage every one of you to realize that you are the new magical standard. I expect to see each of your names written in the stars in due time. The past faces of Aberghee are intelligent and powerful, show them and us that this hasn’t changed.’

“These words are spoken to each and every class of the Aberghee Academy of the Divine Magic Arts each year by the ever-faithful headmaster. And each year after the opening ceremony, we sum up the events and give an exclusive on some of the most prominent and promising students at the divine Academy.” Rants the nameless and borderline faceless social media entertainer. Her and her coworker grin as they gossip and gasp at the pictures of different students and highlight moments of the festivities. Until they get to one student, in particular, a lull in the conversation appears.

“But do you really think he is ready?” asks a voice. The tone is steady but holds a tinge of uncertainty to it. The table is silent as everyone looks towards its head in question.

It only makes sense to question what was just said. After all, they all knew from the past what some teenagers could be like. What a teenager in power could be like. The suggestion was a dangerous one, to say the least. He would either crumble or rise. And with Suna Rintarou, it was hard to predict just which one would take place.

“I believe he is.” This voice is steady as well, but unlike the other one, it’s also strong. It’s the kind of voice that sends shivers down your spine. The kind that makes you believe it. The voice of an alpha. “Maybe he won’t take over immediately, but I’ve been training him to take over within the year.”

The murmurs around the table begin like they had been before the pressing question had been asked. Some agreed, and others did not, all unsure of how accurate the words were.

“Scarlett Hyacinth Chase is the 18-year-old daughter of Grandwitch Mary Jane Chase. Currently, she is listed as the 3rd highest-ranking student at Aberghee Academy and the 6th in the whole territory. However, she is expected to overtake Raven Biles as the 2nd ranking at the Academy and to rise to 3rd or 4th ranking in her territory by the end of her final year of studying. Her strength rests in her superior mental magic ability, a skill hard for younger scholars to achieve, yet Chase has mastered flawlessly. In addition, creation magic is also a preference of hers. Perhaps most interesting, she’s expected to take over her mother’s position of Grandmaster within the year, a feat unheard of by the witch republic for over a hundred years. The last time such an undertaking was made in the 18thcentury but was quickly outlawed.”

The announcer’s drone on. About her pedigree, about how she’s set to have a fantastic career as a Grandwitch. They bring up her temperament issues, her rumored superiority complex, the way that no one in the general public truly knows her.

The last words on the subject?

“I think the chief is correct.” Somebody voices vehemently. “If you look at Rintarou from the scholarly perspective, I think there’s obvious intelligence. The leadership quality is shown on the court. He’s not the captain, but he still has formidable control over the team. And he shows he cares for this community in everything he does. I believe he is ready.”

However, before anyone can really digest the information, another voice speaks up.

“But I have to question, for all that he has accomplished, he has yet to really interact with other groups in the way that a young alpha looking to take over a pack should.” They turn to the head of the table once more. “He hasn’t even left this town, has he Suna-san? What will he do when faced with conflicts from outside, from the Mifel fairies to the east or the Chase witches to the south or-”

“That’s why such an important transfer of power won’t happen until next year. I merely wanted to bring up the topic now, so you all are aware of the changes to come.” Says the woman. The head of the pack. Female alphas were rare and often quite repressed. But for Suna Tomoko, there’s no doubt in her power, at the weight of her words. “My son will take my place next year, and I believe he will be ready by then. I just have a few other things to teach him. He is a talented boy; he will catch on quite easily.”

The others are inclined to agree with her words, the fact their alpha was saying it having little to do with their agreeance. Anyone would agree if they knew Rintarou. He was unique.

The tv is turned off after the words are spoken. A shaky breath escapes the lips of the girl as she proceeds to curl in on herself just a little more. So many expectations. Her eyes drift back down to the coffee table, but they focus on the piece of paper. It’s a letter from the dean and addressed to her mother. She knows what it says, and the inside of her chest is similar to that of a volcano. Bubbling and boiling just below the surface in a bid to explode. How will she react to the news? The news that her perfect student wasn’t as excellent as usual?

A prodigy? Me? What kind of bullshit is that? His mind is racing a mile a minute, trying to search for proof of what everyone at that damned table had just claimed. What his own mother had claimed. How could he be ready to take over for her? The boy walks, no he paces, the hallway just around the corner from the council room. Suddenly it all hits just a bit harder, the words that had been said, and he stops. His breath speeds up. It speeds up entirely too quickly; he’s hyperventilating, trying to find his thoughts. It doesn’t work. He’s still racing without even moving. I’m not ready, I’m not prepared, I’m not ready. I can’t do it, not yet.
