The Selection AU- 11th time’s the charm
Everybody knows Maria di Angelo. Everybody loves Maria di Angelo. And Nico, the only heir to all her messes, is sure he will forever live in her shadow.
When people look at Nico, they see Maria di Angelo’s son. And truly, there’s not much else to see. He sings beautiful songs, but hers were better-written. He does ballet, but her on-stage persona is impossible to replicate. He leads a lonely life, and people don’t know hers wasn’t much different.
Nico isn’t surprised when he’s called for Prince Will’s Selection. He half-expected it. So he goes to the Golden Palace where the Solaces live, and enters with his head held high. People don’t know who he is yet, all the feedback he’s received comes from the Academy of Arts, where he’s spent the last ten years of his life. He’s twenty now, and he will graduate in June. When he’s honest to himself, he admits to feeling scared of the future.
He isn’t the only student of the Academy who’s taking part in the Selection. There’s also Drew Tanaka, who used to be Nico’s best friend, in a time that feels very far away. They — Nico and Drew — aren’t the only students who had submitted to the process of the Selection, but they’re the only ones who have been chosen. It’s the Small Council who chooses the participant of the Selection, taking people from all across North America, which is partly ex-Canada and ex-US.
Nico sighs as he’s lead to his room. He feels weighted down, like someone’s placed an enormous rock over his shoulders. He should have known better than to let the Academy Headmistress, Alecto, submit him. His whole past will be brought up, he will be scrutinised in the worst of ways in front of the whole country.
Before he left the Academy — where he won’t return until Prince Will sends him home, or until the Selection finishes — Alecto gave him a letter from his father. Sitting on his bed, he turns it in his hands, without opening it. He hasn’t talked to Hades in almost a year, since his father went and moved to the Republic of Athens, on the other side of the world.
At the end, he doesn’t find the courage to open the letter. He places it in the nightstand and decides to undo his luggage. He’s doing great, until there’s a knock to the door. When it opens, a guy about as tall as Nico and with curly, brown hair stares back at him. He has brown skin, and a loopsided smile.
“Hi,” the boy says. “I’m Leo Valdez. It seems we’re suite-mates. I checked the other rooms, we’re the first to arrive.”
Nico gives the other a small smile. “I’m Nico.”
Leo raises an eyebrow, entering the room and closing the door behind himself. “Just Nico? I thought you’d have a surname. Are you a lord or something? You look kind of regal.”
Nico laughs. “I’m not. Di Angelo, by the way. That’s my surname.”
It’s the first time Nico has to introduce himself. Everybody knew who he was at the Academy, the same way as he knew everybody else.
Now, Leo raises both eyebrows. He has an expressive face. “As in Nico di Angelo the son of Maria di Angelo?” He lets out a low whistle. “That’s impressive.”
Nico shrugs, putting away one of his shirts. He had to buy clothes before coming, at the Academy he only ever wore his uniform and his dance-clothes.
“We’ll be meeting more impressive people,” he says.
Leo concedes. “True. What do you think he’ll be like? The prince, I mean. He always seems kind on the tv.”
Maria also seemed kind on the tv, and maybe she was, but Nico would always remember her screaming when Hades had to return to Persephone, his actual wife. Nico looks away. He can’t bear Leo’s hopeful eyes.
“I hope he will be,” Nico says.
On Sunday, all the contestants have arrived. Boys and girls alike, as per the prince’s preference. They are placed in the Tower of Dawn, in the east wing of the palace. At the ground-floor, there are the breakfast room, the music room and the relax hall, where they can simply spend their time doing whatever they prefer. There’s also a piano, which Nico approaches. He doesn’t have the time to brush his fingers on the keys, before Drew sweeps behind him.
“Di Angelo, spare me!” She says. “Not one of your depressed ballads again.”
A few people — who seem to have befriended Drew — snicker. A few others stare shocked after the revelation of his surname.
It’s not that Nico is ashamed of being a di Angelo. He just doesn’t go around telling everybody he is. But tonight, when they are presented at North America’s News with Piper McLean, the whole nation will know.
“You’re right, your sex-anthems are much better,” he replies.
Drew rolls her eyes. Truth is, Nico doesn’t mind Drew’s songs. He likes a few of them. Granted, none have been officially released, but the Academy is a small school, and everybody knows everybody’s work. Alecto even wants them to collaborate on something before they graduate.
“Don’t be a bigot,” Drew says, bringing Nico back to reality.
“So, you two know each other,” a girl named Annabeth will later tell Nico, once they’re having supper.
Nico almost scoffs. Know is too little a word to describe their relationship. Nico feels Drew like he feels his limbs, she’s been apart of him for the last ten years of his life. And Nico managed to throw it all away with a harsh decision.
“We go to the same school,” he replies instead.
Leo whistles, something he seems keen on doing, though it goes against palace etiquette. He probably doesn’t know, as Nico reasons.
“I bet her teenage years were a handful,” Leo says.
Nico grimaces. “So were mine. But it was fun.”
Partly fun, as he reminds himself. His teenage years are the ones in which he’s lost the most. He lost his Bianca. But they were also the years in which he ran up and down the halls of the Academy with Drew on one side and Rachel on the other, gossiping and sharing their deepest secrets and fears. Rachel is still friends with Drew, they’re still close. Nico wonders what they say about him.
A clap of hands, clearly to attract everybody’s attention. It works. Nico turns to the head of the table, to see a man on a wheelchair staring back at him, if only for a split second. Nico has a feeling he knows the man, thought he can’t place him.
“Good evening everybody,” the man says. “I am Chiron, and I will be your supervisor during your stay. Should you need anything, you come to me. I’m sure you’ve heard the rules already, but I will repeat the most important ones. If you abstain, you will be sent home. Number one: no getting physical with other contestants. By that I mean both fighting and having sexual intercourses.”
Nico blushes at Chiron’s words, looking away. He catches Drew’s eyes, who mouth at him, ‘Prude’. He clenches his fists, and brings his eyes back to Chiron.
“Number two: no relationship is allowed with the staff. By that I mean you cannot have physical or emotional attachments to any of the palace staff, guards included. Number three: what the prince wants, the prince gets. If what he wants is to send you home, you will be sent home. If he wishes to keep you here, you will be kept here. If he wishes to have time alone with you, he will have it.”
Nico’s ears start ringing. He’s sure Chiron lists other rules and explains how they will have to behave at the interview, but he’s not listening anymore. He can only think of rule number three: what the prince wants, the prince gets. Nico has never been put in a place where he couldn’t deny himself, but now he feels he’s faced with the harsh reality of life. Sometimes, there is simply no way out.
Dinner resumes, and dessert is brought to the table. Nico exists the room, leaving his new acquittances very confused. He needs air. He can’t breathe, and this damn shirt he’s wearing is too tight on the neck.
Finally, he reaches the glass doors to the gardens, but before he can even phantom what’s happening, his path is blocked by guards.
“You can’t go out at this time of the night, sir,” one says. He’s an Asian man, and for a moment Nico thinks of his father’s bodyguard, Frank.
“I need air—” Nico tries to explain. His voice is raspy, his eyes glassy. He doesn’t know how much longer he can resist.
“What you need is none of our problem,” the other guard, a woman, says. “We need to protect you. And that is what we’re doing.”
Nico opens his mouth again, but only a pained sound comes out.
“Let him through,” a voice comes from behind. “I order it.”
In his daze, Nico turns and vaguely recognises the figure he sees as Prince Will. He doesn’t care much, however.
The doors are pulled open and Nico steps outside. His lungs fill with air, more than he thought they could contain.
“I hope you’re doing better,” Prince Will says, evidently having followed Nico outside.
Nico startles. “I am. Your Highness. Thank you.”
His words come out robotic, but he means them. Without the prince, he would have probably ended up in the infirmary.
“You are the first contestant I meet,” the prince says, stepping closer.
Nico takes a step back, but all too soon his back meets a column’s marble. He’s trapped, and what the prince wants, the prince gets.
“Am I?” Nico says, more to himself than to anybody.
“Yes, I was wondering whether the quarters were of your—”
That is when Prince Will commits a mistake. He gets too close, too friendly, and Nico isn’t used to it. Alecto always told him: people will want to be you, or they will want to bed you. And Nico doesn’t want that at the moment, and there’s no other way out really. So he does the only logical thing: he knees Prince Will right between his legs.

Chapter Ten: Sabbatical
Shortly after Noemi made her pregnancy public, Jason took the family on holiday for a weekend. They made their first stop at a museum in Greece, so Noemi could see the statues. "Jason, why did you—?"
"You need to follow your dream... You've done more than enough for everyone else. Emi, it's your turn to get what you want," Jason interrupted, "You can't keep postponing happiness out of your sense of duty to others. I had to learn that... And now it's your turn." Noemi grinned at him.
Jason squeezed her hand. Angelo took Katerina to see the paintings while Domenico stayed in Jason's sightline, reading the statues' descriptions to Cecelia. Jason took his other hand and patted Dario's back. "We're going to be so busy. There's about to be eight of us," Noemi whispered.
"Which is an even better reason to take some time for yourself. Take a sabbatical," Jason suggested, "The kids would love to have you home, and so would I. I'll get whatever you need to get started. Clay? Marble? Soap? It doesn't matter. I want you to give your dreams a shot."
Noemi tilted her head as she stared at a statue. "Let me think on it tonight. I'll have an answer in the morning after we talk to the children," Noemi whispered.
Domenico brought Katerina back and stuck his hand in Jason's pocket. "Papá?" Domenico whispered.
"I don't have any more candy. We can't eat here. We'll go to the restaurant soon. Then we're gonna go to the Pláka and get something to eat at the tavern," Jason reassured him, "Five more minutes." Domenico nodded.
Dario cooed, and Jason returned to patting him on the back. "Domenico, they have lots of eggplant at the restaurant we're going to," Noemi whispered. Domenico smiled from ear to ear.
"Mamma, my feet are tired," Katerina whispered as she tugged on Noemi's dress. Noemi picked her up and showered her with kisses. "Thank you." Katerina giggled as she wrapped her arms around Noemi's neck.
"Of course, principessa," Noemi whispered.
Katerina sucked her thumb, and Jason held her other hand in his. "Fragolina, how would you feel if Mamma stayed home for a year?" Jason questioned.
Katerina opened her eyes and smiled. "Could she?" Katerina questioned.
"I could... Would you want me to?" Noemi replied. Katerina made a soft noise.
"I want you to stay home," Katerina whispered. Noemi glanced at Jason, and he nodded. "Then, I'll give the hospital notice at the end of the month," Noemi replied. She took a deep breath.
Domenico hugged Noemi's legs. "Are you gonna play with us, Mamma?" Domenico asked. Noemi nodded.
"As much as I can," Noemi smiled.
**
Noemi sat in the backyard three months after they returned from their holiday in Athens, sculpting her maquette. Dario sat in a playpen nearby, the wind blowing gently. Noemi stopped to change the music and wave at Dario. "Papá will be home soon," Noemi whispered, "He'll bring lots of yummy treats for us."
Dario shook his rattle. Noemi nodded. They'd been outside for hours, and she was nearly done. Noemi took her tools and set them aside. She wiped her hands on a towel. "Hello, piccolino. Do you want Mamma?" Noemi questioned. Dario cooed. Jason came home from the gym with Cecelia on his hip and kissed them both.
"There's gelato in the freezer. How's your first piece coming along?" Jason asked. Noemi tilted her head toward the clay. "You're doing a bust?"
"Of all the kids from youngest to oldest. First in clay, then in marble," Noemi replied. "Dario's got such small eyes... And such round cheeks. His features are so definitive and striking." Jason blew a raspberry into Dario's cheek and set Cecelia down in the playpen.
"He looks like your father," Jason whispered.
"You've been looking at my father's pictures?" Noemi questioned. Jason nodded.
"I wanted a good idea of where our kids get their looks. We both know Dom looks like me, and Angel looks like you... The twins look like a mixture of your mother and my father... Then I saw a picture of your father, and it clicked," Jason replied.
Jason sat on the ground and rested his head on her lap. "What happened?" Noemi asked.
"Angelo had to do a family tree the other day, and I felt awful because he couldn't put anything true for my side... So, I worked with him for hours trying to put together pictures and information from your side... Then, I realized we never talk about your family," Jason mumbled. Noemi kissed his temple.
"What do you wanna know?" Noemi asked.
"Everything," Jason whispered.
Noemi washed her hands in the outdoor sink and dried them on her smock. "Well, you know my father was from Senegal, and my mother was born in Salerno, Italy... My father's name was Sette Diallo. My mother's name was Anna Ayo Greco. My father was a model, and my mother was a singer. They were beautiful, but they were often too busy for me. The only time we actually spent together was the holiday we often took in September... I'm not sure why they were murdered, but I knew it had something to do with the surrogate for my brother and sister," Noemi explained.
"You have siblings?" Jason asked. He sat up on his knees.
"Yes... Aïda and Omonigho. We were split up after everything happened," Noemi replied, "The surrogate's husband took them. I've seen them a few times since, but I was barred from approaching them."
Jason frowned. "What about now?" Jason questioned. "Why didn't you mention it? I would've—."
"I was frightened. What if-? What if they didn't—?" Jason kissed her cheek. "Where are you going?"
"To finish Angelo's family tree!" Jason shouted on his way inside.
"Jason!" Noemi called out. Cecelia giggled.
"Mamma, isn't Papá so silly?" Cecelia laughed. Noemi forced a smile and nodded. "How is your sculpture?"
"Everything's going wonderfully," Noemi replied. Cecelia pulled Dario into her lap. "Be careful."
"I will, Mamma. Angelo's walking home by himself today," Cecelia announced. Noemi knit her brows and pulled both children out of the playpen.
"Jason! Jason! What does she mean? Why aren't we picking Angelo up?" Noemi yelled. Jason met her in the living room and took Dario.
"He's walking home with his friend. I met the kid. They're a sweet kid, but they've got a lot going on at home right now," Jason replied.
Noemi relaxed. "Oh... He's not alone. He's with a friend... Does his friend speak English?" Noemi asked. Jason shrugged.
"I always speak Italian when I see them. Volpe... Angel calls them Fox," Jason replied, "I'm making tacos for everyone since we have all this octopus in the fridge... And I double-checked with Angel. Volpe's spending the night, and they don't mind seafood."
"Do you need my help?" Noemi asked. Jason smiled and nodded.
"I always need you," Jason grinned as he pressed his forehead to hers. Noemi smiled and gave him a quick peck.
"Later," Noemi whispered.
"Definitive later? Or possible later?" Jason asked.
Noemi lifted his chin with her knuckle. "Definitive," Noemi replied. Jason chewed his lip. "Then you can tell me what you want."
"I look forward to it," Jason replied.

New Demigod Cabin: The Tritopatores
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Tritopatores ("thrice-ancestors") are a trio of benevolent Athenian wind gods associated with childbirth, marriage, and the home. Their names are Amalceides, Protocles, and Protocleon, and they're said to be children of Gaia and Helios, or possibly even older. They are ancestor deities that Athenians and other people in Attica prayed to when they prepared to marry or wanted children. They watch over the family and protect the household.
Demigod children of the Tritopatores are always born on Wednesday (because it's the third day of the week) in a location that has the number 3 in either the street address or zip code. Their social security number, license plate number, phone number, etc. always has at least one 3 in it. Children of the Tritopatores are more likely to be born with Down syndrome, since this happens from having a third copy of chromosome 21. When a child of one of the Tritopatores is claimed, a blue triangle with the letter T inside of it appears above their head, accompanied by a soft breeze.
Adult demigod children of the Tritopatores almost always get married and have big families. Daughters of the Tritopatores are three times more likely to give birth to triplets than regular mortals. If a child of the Tritopatores goes through two unhappy/unsuccessful marriages then their third marriage will be blessed with joy, love, and prosperity. They have a strong interest in ancestry and frequently become genealogists or have medical jobs related to genetics. They often find themselves living or working on the third floor of their building.
The children of the Tritopatores always incorporate the number 3 into their usernames and passwords without even realizing it. Their favorite foods are "three cheese" entrees and "triple chocolate" desserts. They often date or befriend demigods from the Athena cabin. They also get along well with other demigod children of domestic deities like Eileithyia and Hymenaeus, and they hold Hera in high respect as well. They frequently visit Hestia while she tends the hearth fire.
The Tritopatore's cabin resembles the Athena cabin and is painted in shades of light blue on both the inside and outside. The flag of Athens flies above the cabin, and the roof tiles change color to match the clouds in the sky. All demigod children of the Triopatores have free access to Ancestry.com and other genealogy sites. Above each of their beds is a group of picture frames that contain portraits of famous or important ancestors. There is always a pleasant, gentle breeze blowing inside. At one end of the cabin is a big widescreen TV, which they use to host movie trilogy marathon parties. There are three chairs in the room, which can magically expand to fit three people.
Demigod children of the Tritopatores can multiply non-magical items into three, and can also create two temporary copies of themselves. They can fly and levitate and have some control over the winds, but aren't strong enough to summon or control storms. By listening to the whispers of the wind, they can hear things that are out of earshot. They are resistant to love magic, and the some especially strong individuals can cause opponents to be inflicted with birthing pains. Children of the Tritopatores have their powers, strength, and stamina increased if they are within a city, and are even stronger when they're inside a home.
Historical Demigods/Legacies: Constantine Angelos, Manuel Comnenos, Maria Callas, many prominent Athenians.
Cabin Members: Aarti Tripathi, Seth and Trinity Adams, Tercero Balza, Trey Fallon, Head Counselor: Atticus Comnenos

Meanwhile in Gilead... "Other cities and counties in Texas have passed ordinances to prohibit traveling through their jurisdictions for an abortion outside the state. This includes the cities of Athens, Abilene, Plainview, San Angelo, Odessa, Muenster and Little River-Academy, and Mitchell, Goliad, Lubbock, Dawson, Cochran and Jack counties." If you give somebody a ride when they start to go into septic shock you can get sued. Someone can collect $100,000 bounty with permission from the State, and here folks in the city want to add their own bounty. Or I should say, the carpetbaggers with a mission have convinced enough locals to do this. "On social media, Mark Lee Dickson, director of Right to Life of East Texas who is leading the charge, said he is looking forward to the next step of the process." I remember bunches of movie scenes where the WWII police states would demand to see your papers. Then pew pew. Here they want to see your belly.

'Tragic human error' caused Greece's worst train crash: PM
"Everything shows that the drama was, sadly, mainly due to a tragic human error," Greek prime minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said in a televised address.
Tumblr media
Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Wednesday said a "tragic human error" was likely responsible for a train collision that has left at least 38 dead in the country's worst rail tragedy.
Two carriages were crushed and a third engulfed in fire when a passenger train and a freight train late Tuesday collided near the central city of Larissa, on a route plagued by years of safety warnings.
The fire department had earlier increased the death toll to 38, adding that 57 people were still hospitalised, six of them in intensive care, while several were missing.
"Everything shows that the drama was, sadly, mainly due to a tragic human error," Mitsotakis -- who is seeking re-election this year -- said in a televised address.
He said it was a "terrible train accident without precedent" in Greece which would be "fully" investigated.
"I've never seen anything like this in my entire life," said one rescue worker, emerging from the wreckage. "It's tragic. Five hours later, we are finding bodies."
The accident left a tangled mess of metal and shattered glass in a field.
In some cases, passengers are being identified from body parts, volunteer fireman Vassilis Iliopoulos told Skai TV, warning that the death toll would rise.
Seventeen biological samples have been collected from remains, and from 23 relatives seeking a match, the police said.
"It was the train of terror," Pavlos Aslanidis, whose son is missing along with a friend, told reporters.
Greece's transport minister submitted his resignation just hours after the accident.
"When something so tragic happens, we cannot continue as if nothing had happened," Kostas Karamanlis said in a public statement.
On Wednesday evening, police in the capital Athens fired tear gas at protesters throwing rocks at the offices of the railway's operating company, Hellenic Train.
The passenger train, carrying more than 350 people, had been travelling from Athens to the northern city of Thessaloniki.
The 59-year-old station master of Larissa was arrested several hours after the accident and charged with negligent homicide.
Government spokesman Yiannis Economou said the two trains were left running on the same track for "several kilometres".
But train unionists said the station master was likely a scapegoat as the safety shortcomings of the Athens-Thessaloniki railway line had been known for years.
In an open letter in February, train staff said track safety systems were incomplete and poorly maintained.
A safety supervisor had resigned last year, warning that infrastructure upgrades pending since 2016 were incomplete and that train speeds of up to 200 kilometres (124 miles) an hour were unsafe.
The president of the train drivers' union Kostas Genidounias told AFP from the scene that the accident "would have been avoided if the safety systems were working".
'Complete panic'
Health Minister Thanos Plevris said most passengers were "young people", with the train carrying many students returning to Thessaloniki after a long holiday weekend.
"It was a nightmare... I'm still shaking," 22-year-old passenger Angelos told AFP.
"Fortunately we were in the penultimate car and we got out alive. There was a fire in the first cars and complete panic.
"The collision was like a huge earthquake."
"I was stained with blood from other people who were injured near me," a passenger named Lazos told the newspaper Proto Thema.
Some 150 firefighters and 40 ambulances were mobilised for the response, according to Greek emergency services.
Crews were still struggling to lift one of the smashed carriages, lying on its side, to enable a search inside, Iliopoulos said.
"My thoughts are with the people in Greece this morning," tweeted the head of the European Council, Charles Michel.
"Shocked by the news and images of the collision of the two trains," he added.
Neighbouring Albania, Italy, Serbia and Turkey were among states to send condolences, as did China, the United States, France, Russia, Ukraine, Germany, and the Vatican.
Nicosia said two Cypriots were among the missing.
'Windows exploded'
On the local media site Onlarissa, a young woman said that the train "was stopped for a few minutes when we heard a deafening noise".
Another passenger told Skai TV that "the windows suddenly exploded. People were screaming."
"Fortunately, we were able to open the doors and escape fairly quickly. In other wagons, they did not manage to get out, and one wagon even caught fire," he added.
Authorities have declared three days of national mourning.

Went to the National Gallery in Athens yesterday and here are my highlights :)
Before I start: I am no art critic or anything like that, I just want to share my experience here and what I felt like walking through there, so I could express myself rather poorly.
1. "On the terrace" (Rizos, 1897)
Idk exactly why I liked this one so much, it just looked warm and welcoming. I sadly had to use the one from Wikipedia cuz I forgot to take a picture :( (the colours were so much warmer in real life btw)
Tumblr media
2. "The Acropolis" (Emilios Prosalentis, 1897) & "Thiseio and the Acropolis" (Angelos Giallinas, 1895)
They were in the same window so I'll put them here together aswell :)
What I liked about them was, that you can see the city developement of the district Thiseio around the Acropolis. Another cool thing about them was seing how the Acropolis used to look like and compare it to how it looks today.

3. "The Acropolis" (Vincenzo Lanza, 1860)
Just like the last 2 I liked this one because it shows how the Acropolis looked like a long time ago. Another reason would be that it, just like the 1st one looked so warm and welcoming :)
Tumblr media
4. "Copenhagen Harbour" (Ioannis Altamouras, 1874)
Once again I don't what captivates me exactly with this one, I just know that I love it. If I had to guess it's be the clouds, they look fluffy :3
Tumblr media
5. "The Open Door" (Nikos Hadjikyriakos-Ghika, 1927)
I believe it was the eeriness. I can't stand open doors and seeing this painting actually sent shivers down my spine, fearing whatever may come through it. I know it isn't a real door, but it certainly felt like it (please don't make fun of me for that lol)
Tumblr media
That naturally weren't all of them, I literally spent 2h on the 1st floor alone and was kicked out for staying there until they closed. Didn't even get to see everything :,)
All pictures are from the Galerie official Website, ecept the 1st (Wikipedia) and the and the 3rd (Wikidata)
