I'm not gonna have time to do a full drawing today, and I'm on a train which makes smooth lines really tricky, so here's a super rough concept of a lyke card, plus the seven different iterations of the hanged man that I own from different sets.

I think it's very funny that everyone went for the hanged man as their tarot card, but it is the one that Keith and Austin chose for lyke, so I felt obliged.

The hanged man is a great card, deeply ambiguous. It's sometimes read as a traitor, or a mystic, or a version of odin. The figure hangs in this deeply ambiguous point between passivity and active choice. It's meant to be unclear whether they have been placed in this situation and are trapped, or whether this is an active decision to reach enlightenment. I want to evoke all those elements with Lyke, and lean into the uncertainty of his choices, which is why there's a shrew skull in the lower left corner, for chine. Roses, naturally, for Aterika'kaal - and rose thorns binding lyke's foot to the beam. The ravening beast appears from behind his coat, and tombo in its bowl is between his hands, which are stained with spider ink. Tombo is drawn to deliberately echo one half of the "two fish as yin and yang" image that is so popular, which is extremely corny but I like the idea of it feeling like something out of balance, that there's a missing presence. I might try and add a few more details, like junk spilling out of lyke's pockets, and some element of fire somewhere. He has one eye closed as a deliberate evocation of odin, because doing something stupid in the pursuit of knowledge is very lyke.

The cards in the picture on the right are from seven different decks - centre is the thoth tarot deck, centre top is the little monsters deck, and then going clockwise it's the corrupted tarot deck by wyrmwood, the star spinner tarot, the botanica tarot, the crow tarot and the literary tarot. If you're curious about any of those decks I wrote up a big post on all of them that you can find on this blog. But it's fun to look at all of them together and see the consistencies as well as the variations.

oh this is going around again! aterika'kaal now lives on my desk, beside a jar of bees. it hasn't tried to eat me yet, so i think things are going well between us.

made an aterika'kaal and now i'm joining the ranks of junk mages who keep rose gods in a jar

today i finished the third hank of the sangfiyarn, knitted this gauge swatch, did gauge math, ripped this swatch out, cast on for the final balaclava, and knitted a couple rounds. the final number of stitches was three times as many as this, so keep in mind that the stripes that are showing up here really won't be visible in the final project. i get the impression people usually spin all the yarn for a project before they start it, but im impatient and needed a day off from holding up a drop spindle.

on the sangtober front, i just started episode 12, so im nearly two days ahead of my schedule. i always love relistening to shows. this time around ive been paying attention to all the ways lyke could have not ended up with aterika'kaal. such is actual play, so many things could have gone differently. ive also been tossing around the idea of doing an aterika'kaal themed sangfiyarn next october, so im paying lots of attention to the descriptions austin is giving (will i forget them before then? probably). i hadn't really noticed before that he says there are only a few flowers blooming at the one time, that kind of scuppers my plans a bit. i wanted to do either an assigned pooling sort of situation or a core spun yarn with a bunch of beehives on it, but i think a whole scarf with less than 10 "flowers" on it will look silly. i might come up with other plans, i might ignore that and proceed anyways, or i might do a few large beehives and some smaller ones. luckily nothing has been said to screw with my plans to spin in a bunch of spike beads to represent the thorns. I might also figure out how to make a slightly darker version of whatever i do for the stem color and do a subtle dyre owed skull bit of colorwork

if i had a nickel for every time i've encountered a bloodthirsty maneating plant in fiction who tricks some guy into feeding it i'd have 2 nickels. which isn't a lot but it's weird that it's happened twice

see Lyke has aterika'kaal as his major selling point because he and that plant destroyed reality but Brnine – CAPTAIN BRNINE OF THE BLUE CHANNEL – was hot in Partizan BEFORE ASEPSIS and remains hot are you KIDDING ME. Asepsis is step nine of ten on Brnine's hotness map. Lyke's hubris is childlike in nature while Brnine has an ego bigger than the fucking sun built up around themselves like the world's biggest glass city. they are a LOSER and are TRYING THEIR BEST and TERRIBLE. Brnine would deliberately curtail a roadtrip to go to subway because they want wheat bread at subway and when it gets to their turn in line they only have flatbread. Brnine would insist on hand-fixing your computer before breaking the LCD screen on accident and buying a new one for you. Kalvin Brnine would go on a date at a place they think has the right vibes the ONE DAY OF THE YEAR they are doing a theme night. they are pathetic. their morals are a loose collection of justifications to do what they feel impulsively to be the right decision. their commitment to the cause is unwavering because it makes them feel good inside. they can't talk to ANYONE ever because they have +0 to talk, a noted improvement from FIVE YEARS OF LEADERSHIP TRAINING. they are one of the good guys and they SUCK. Lyke is cool though, I think he's my fave Keith character. but you're asking pluto to outshine the sun here
