THE 9TH MEMBER - CHAPTER 1

synopsis. nabi (aka you) has been training for just over 3 years and when you heard you were going to debut, you were super excited to meet your members. although, you were taken aback when you heard that your members were all boys.

when you first got news of getting accepted into this new company, you couldn't believe your eyes. all this hard work and effort seemed like it was worth it after all.

"we have a slight problem." your manager says. uh oh. this is going to turn very bad.. "as you would've known we don't have much girl trainees here at the company and since we were aiming for a 5 member girl group, we've decided to do something you probably won't like."

"me!? in a boy group?! b-but, im a girl! wouldn't it be weird if a girl - who is not a boy - is in a boy group?" your face dropped at the sudden announcement. not being able to debut was probably a way better choice than having to debut with boys. "look, we know this came as a shocker but, its really beneficial for you!" your manager tries to say happily. "tomorrow, you'll be meeting the members. trust me, they're really nice!" the staff tries to say before you groan annoyed as you stormed off. "why am i debuting in a boy group? wouldn't i be hated at? wasn't it better if i just debut solo? why am i going to debut with random boys?!" you thought.

"what?! a girl?" hongjoong says in shock. over the last 5 years, it's always been just the 8 of the boys together. but now that nabi will debut with ateez, that means there'll be more pressure on hongjoong. from reproducing the songs to recording all of nabi's parts, he gets annoyed over this. "why are we having a girl in our group!? do you not understand the pressure ill be put under!? i have already worked long hours for us to come this far, wouldn't it just be a waste if we have to remake ALL our songs?" hongjoong angrily says. "calm down hongjoong, im sure she'll be a great addition to our group." seonghwa calmly says, trying to calm him down. "exactly! i think having a girl will be a great addition to the team plus, it'll be really good for you guys to have a new friend!" the manager says.

hongjoong sighs before accepting his fate. "fine, but if she isn't what you say she is, then im going to make her first day her last." he says before storming off. the members rub their forehead in devestation as the meeting room stays quiet. "well, how are we going to deal with a girl?" mingi says. "no idea, but we need to give it some time. if we rush her into doing stuff, she'll get uncomfortable and then we'll get in trouble." seonghwa adds on from mingi's statement. "plus, ive heard there were some trainees here who are snitches. hopefully she isn't one of them." wooyoung mentions. "well now that we're talking, you guys will meet her.. tomorrow!" the manager says. "TOMORROW!?" the guys say together. "yes yes, bit of a shocker but im sure you'll be fine!" the members sigh in annoyance before the manager leaves them, the room filling with silence again.

SUMMER TRIP | ATEEZ 9th MEMBER AU

ATEEZ were given a two week trip to a summer house, what could possibly go wrong? “We're here!” [🌊] was abruptly woken up from his nap as Wooyoung yelled out in the car. He opens his eyes for a few seconds to see everyone taking off their seatbelt. But [🌊] closes his eyes and attempts to fall back asleep, until he feels a large hand on his shoulder. “[🌊]-hyung, it's time to get up.” Yunho whispers. [🌊] would lift his head up, then Yunho would start laughing. “Hey, you ok?” [🌊] looks over at Yunho confused. But [🌊] looks like a grumpy grandfather that got woken up from the best nap by his grandkids. “Your face looks swollen.” San joked, making Yunho laugh a bit harder. [🌊] would just glare at San. “C’mon hyung, we're here at the house.” Yunho pats [🌊] on the shoulder as he would get out. So, where are they? Well, ATEEZ was given a two week break at a summer house near the beach. There wasn’t any film crew, no media, nothing! Although they did have security nearby, we won’t talk about it though. All they had to do was to give updates on social media and film for their vlog series. 

 [🌊] would exit the car looking like a zombie. “Yah, [🌊]-hyung, you good?” Wooyoung was laughing his ass off at the site of the eldest. Yeosang who had the camera to film for the vlog walked over to film [🌊]. Pretty much everyone was surrounding [🌊] making fun of him. The grandfather of the group was pretty much being bullied. “Anyway, help me take our bags in!” Hongjoong then ends the terror for [🌊], dragging the younger members to help him.

 “There’s only four rooms.” 

 All of the members were in the living room, now learning that they were lied to. The house said it had five rooms but it had only four. All their luggage was with them and all nine of them just sat around the living room. “I can sleep in the living room-” [🌊] suggested, but was cut off by San. “No! Last time you did something similar you accidentally fell off the couch and hit your head on the table!” Yeah that did happen, everyone thought he died but nope. [🌊] lets out a sigh in defeat. “Well what do we do?” “Why not play a game? See who gets paired up with who.” Yeosang suggested. In which everyone agrees too. And after trial and error, and a lot of chaos. The rooms went something like this. Yeosang and Jongho, Hongjoong and Wooyoung, Seonghwa and Mingi, San and Yunho and [🌊]. Luckily, the trio were placed in the master room, so all is good, right?

 Anywho, [🌊] immediately made his way to the room carrying his bags along with him. He enters the room and tosses his bag off to the side and immediately collapses down onto the bed. “Hyung! You can’t sleep again!” San chuckles as he enters the room afterwards. “Mm’comfy.” [🌊]’s face was in the soft blanket, San walks up to the bed to sit down next to the elder and.. Well he was right, the bed is extremely soft. “Well, we gotta check the place out.” San says as he attempts to get [🌊] up. Though [🌊] tried to drag San down to sleep with him. “No- Hyung-” San tried to fight back from being pulled down, but in the end [🌊] won. Meanwhile Yunho just stood there at the doorway filming the whole thing, laughing.

“C’mon let's go!” Wooyoung says as he runs out of the backdoor and down the patio stairs that lead to the beach, followed by some of the other younger members. After unpacking and checking out the house, some of the members wanted to go to the beach and run around. Meanwhile Seonghwa and Hongjoong went out to go get food to stock up, that would leave the grandfather of the group, [🌊], to watch the rest.

 “Wooyoung wait- you need sunscreen!” [🌊] calls out, but it was too late. But luckily San ran after him. [🌊] was finishing up packing the needed items to bring out, Mingi and Yunho were helping too. Distance screaming can be heard as Wooyoung flees from San. “Hyung, let me carry the bags for you.” Jongho offers as he walks over to [🌊], “It's fine Jon-” Before [🌊] could even finish his sentence, Jongho takes the bags from [🌊] and walks out, making [🌊] sigh. Yunho carried two small umbrellas and Mingi carried the cooler, looks like they were gonna be out for a while till Seonghwa and Hongjoong got back. 

 So the four went down to the beach where they saw Yeosang filming San chasing Wooyoung down. Good times. “Where do we want the stuff?” Jongho looks around. “Mmm, why not over here?” Yunho points out a spot, in which the rest agreed on. The four walked over and started to set up stuff. Meanwhile, San was dragging Wooyoung over so he could put sunscreen on him. “San, sunscreen is in the bag.” Yunho points over at the bag behind him, in which San goes over as well as dragging Wooyoung along. “Hey [🌊]-hyung, are you planning on going out into the water?” Yeosang walks over to the elder, “Mmm, probably not today.” [🌊] says as he sets down a towel on the sand. “Well, you should at least put some sunscreen on hyung, let me-” Yeosang turned around to get the sun screen, but noticed that San, who had the sunscreen last, was not near the bag. Then, Yeosang and [🌊] turns their heads to the shore as they hear laughter. Wooyoung is basically in the water now and San is yelling at him, classic.

 After a few hours, the front door to their vacation home opens as Seonghwa and Hongjoong walk in carrying loads of bags filled with different food, drinks, and snacks. “Where are they?” Hongjoong asked as he looked around, making his way to the kitchen. “Perhaps they’re still on the beach? They said they were gonna go to the beach but I guess they’re not done.” Seonghwa replies as he follows Hongjoong. “Why don’t you go look for them, I can deal with bringing in the rest of the groceries.” Seonghwa says as he puts down the bags he was carrying onto the table. 

 “Mmm, fine.” Hongjoong wanted to protest and continue to help him but he knows Seonghwa will still pressure him to do something else. So, Hongjoong goes out to the back patio that overlooks the beach. He can see umbrellas, towels, and other stuff along with two people sitting in the shade. He then see’s four people out in the water on surfboards, now who is who- “Oh- hey hyung.” Hongjoong jumps, hearing the voice, but then notices that Yeosang was sitting on a chair reading a book. “Didn’t realize you two got back.” He says as he closes the book and sets it down on a table next to him. 

 “What are they doing down there?” Hongjoong asked.

 “[🌊]-hyung, San, Mingi, and Wooyoung are wanting to tryout surfing. Yunho and Jongho are relaxing. I came up here because I was hungry but I didn’t feel like going back down there.” “Oh, fair.” Hongjoong says as he looks back out to the others that are struggling to catch waves, distant laughter can be heard along with the loud crashing waves and breeze. 

 “I can help Seonghwa-hyung with unpacking the groceries.” Yeosang says as he goes back inside. “I’ll go get them.” Hongjoong says as he would make his way down to the others.

 “Who wants to go explore downtown with me?”

 San says as he was pretty much standing there ready to go out already. 

 Most of the members were tired out after going wild in the ocean, some of them scattered around in the living room laying down as the fan was on max and the AC on. 

 “Yah! How are you not tired?” Wooyoung sits up from the couch. “I had a nap silly, I just woke up and I wanna do more stuff!”

 Wooyoung groans as he plops back down on the couch, then feeling a smack on his leg. “Ow-” “Be quiet.” Mingi grumbles as he was disturbed from his slumber. Wooyoung mocks him by mumbling what he said. 

 “I can go with you.” Seonghwa says, “I still need to get a few things but I wanted to save it and see if anyone wanted to come along.” “Oh! Alright, I think [🌊]-hyung wanted to come too.” San turns around and looked down the hallway to where his room was, seeing [🌊] walking out ready to go but still trying to wake up from his beauty sleep. “Anyone else?” San turns back around to look at the others. “I’ll go.” Yeosang then gets up from the chair he was in, “Give me a few minutes.” He says as he makes his way to his room he was staying in. “We’ll wait!” –

 Fastforward and the four are out walking around downtown. The group have already visited some small shops within the town, getting a few souvenirs and such.

 “Oh look! Ice cream!” San looked to his right and pointed out a small shop that was coming up, of course it was an ice cream shop.

 “Could we get some?” “I guess? We would need to ask the others what they want.” Seonghwa rubs the back of his head, a bit hesitant to buy anything else as they already went on a spending spree as well as lunch. “We already had lunch-” “It says here we can do take out.” [🌊] cuts of Seonghwa, this man was already on their website. “Yeah but I already spent-”

 “I can buy it Seonghwa, don’t worry.” [🌊] pats him on the back, “Can one of you text the group chat and ask the rest what they want.” “Yeah sure I can.” Yeosang says as he pulls out his phone. “Imagine if they had those chips.” San chuckled. “Oh god I hope not.” [🌊] groans, remembering that one thing they did ages ago.

 Fastforward and it was now evening. The sun was setting on the horizon and the group were getting ready for dinner. Half the members were cooking while the others were in the living room hanging out. Meanwhile, [🌊] was in his room taking a nap.

 [🌊] was tired, even after a nap earlier in the day. No wonder why their fans called him grandpa. 

 The door opens to their room, revealing Wooyoung walking in and over to [🌊]’s side. “Hyung, get up, Dinner is ready.” Wooyoung shakes [🌊] shoulder gently. [🌊] lets out a groan as he would slowly sit up. “C’mon hyung.” Wooyoung at this point was trying to drag him out of the bed. 

 [🌊] was able to get up and walk with Wooyoung to the living room, everyone was at the table with their food, and luckily, alcohol.

 [🌊] chuckled at the sight. “It’s our first day here and we already have drinks out?” 

 “Well tomorrow is supposed to be boiling outside, too hot to even be in the ocean. So I figured we can just get loose and use the heat as an excuse not to do anything.” Seonghwa says as he sits down at his chair.

 “For how long will this heatwave be in effect?” [🌊] asked. “Few days.” 

 “Fair enough.”

“Anywho, let's dig in!” Wooyoung says as they start to eat their dinner, wonder what could go wrong?

 “What do you mean I made a difficult equation? I failed math!” [🌊] sat there dumbfounded as he stared at a whiteboard that sat in the living room that Jongho had founded while drunk off their ass last night.

 “I don’t fucking know, you were the one who did this! I remember you doing this!” Jongho pointed back at the whiteboard. Jongho wanted to drink less last night so he had some memories of last night. “I even took a video of you explaining the whole thing and how it can fuck up the economy.”

 Meanwhile, Hongjoong was lying on the couch suffering from the worst headache ever along with Wooyoung and Seonghwa. The others were still asleep. 

 “You still did it anyway!” “Ya! Shut up! I’m trying to sleep!” San yelled out in the room he was in, and audible smack can be heard in there too, probably Yunho telling him to be quiet.

 “Also, I should remind you that Mingi and Yunho tried to recreate some fight scene from some show that I can’t remember but it ended up turning out to be some rugby pileup as the others join in including you, and this was WHILE you were explaining how some idiot can ruin an economy.” “What the fuck…” [🌊] was just speechless at this point, slumping back in his seat. 

 “Ow! My fucking leg!” Wooyoung says as he pulled his leg out from under [🌊] and tried to kick him, but this man was sore as shit.

 “Ya! Don’t do that to your hyung!” Hongjoong slaps Wooyoung gently on the shoulder. Meanwhile Seonghwa fell back asleep, unphased by the others yelling. 

 “You’re gonna need to go get medicine for all of us y'know?” [🌊] looks at Jongho.

 “Didn’t we already bring some?” 

 “No.”

 Jongho lets out a sigh, “Fine, fine, I'll go out right now.” then making his way to the door to get ready. 

 “Fucking kill me.” Wooyoung groans. “Hush.” [🌊] snaps back at him. “Go get me ice cream hyung.” “...It’s nine AM, why the hell do you want ice cream?”

 “Please?”

 “No.”

 “Please?”  “No.”

This would continue for another five or so minutes, this is going to be a crazy trip for them.

Ateez Basics for new Atiny!

Ateez is an 8 member South Korean boy group that debuted on October 24th, 2018, they come from the company KQ Entertainment, they were KQ's first trainees.

Pronounced Ae-Teez, meaning they can do everything from A to Z (we do not call them by their government name so this is the explanation we stick with). Fandom name is Atiny, which means Ateez+Destiny, pronounced Ae-Teeny.

Ateez have a long and complicated lore that you don't need to try to understand if you don't want to. Most of their music videos tell a story and it is fun to put together, fans have made explanations and guide videos for the lore if you want to get into it. But basically they're pirates that have taken over an oppressive government and you'll see lots of pirate themes throughout.

Ateez's introduction is "8 Makes 1 Team". Hongjoong made them all matching team rings.

•Hongjoong was KQ's first trainee.

•Hongjoong is a supporter of multiple organizations like The Polished Man Campaign to end violence against children, you will see Hongjoong always having at least one polished nail, and The Happy Hippie Foundation that helps Homeless and LGBTQ+ Youth.

•Park Seong Hwa (박성화) ⭐

•Born in Jinju, Gyeongnam, South Korea on April 3rd, 1998, he is the oldest member.

•Height: 178cm (5’10)

•Main Vocalist, Rapper, Dancer, Performer, Actor.

•Seonghwa was the fifth trainee at KQ.

•Seonghwa was in the K-Drama series 'Imitation' in 2021.

•Seonghwa and Hongjoong's pairing name is Matz, they created the name for themselves, it basically means eldests, they created a unit song with the same name.

•Jeong Yun Ho (정윤호) 🐶

•Born in Gwangju, South Korea on March 23rd, 1999, he is the third oldest member.

•Height: 186cm (6’1) (I actually think he's taller but this is the last height we know of)

•Lead Dancer, Main Vocalist, Performer, Actor.

•Yunho was the second trainee at KQ.

•Yunho was in the K-Drama series 'Imitation' in 2021, and has expressed wanting to act again someday.

•Kang Yeo Sang (강여상) 👑

•Born in Pohang, South Korea on June 15th, 1999, he is the fourth oldest member.

•Height: 175cm (5’9)

•Main Vocalist, Main Dancer, Rapper, Performer.

•Yeosang was the sixth trainee at KQ.

•Yeosang was a trainee at BigHit (now Hybe).

•Six other companies wanted Yeosang to sign with them but he chose KQ.

• Born in Namhae, South Gyeongsan, South Korea on July 10th, 1999, he is the fifth oldest member.

•Height: 178cm (5’10)

•Main Vocalist, Main Dancer, Performer, Actor.

•San was the fourth trainee at KQ.

•San was in the K-Drama series 'Imitation' in 2021.

•San is the first Idol from Namhae.

•San and Wooyoung's pairing name is Woosan (☂️), which you'll hear them refer to themselves a lot, even introducing themselves as Woosan instead of their own names.

•San and Wooyoung have matching tattoos above their right knee that says "Amicus Ad Aras" which is Latin for "Friends To The Very End."

•Song Min Gi (송민기) 🐥

• Born in Incheon, South Korea on August 9th, 1999, he is the sixth oldest member.

I have so much motivation for this series currently, so y'all are getting a bunch of updates for it hehe

Pairing: Ateez x 9th member!reader Summary: Y/n meets Wooyoung, the other omega in Ateez, and Hongjoong gets what is coming to him, via an angry Seonghwa wc: 2k AU: a/b/o Genre: Fluff/Angst warnings: Yelling, physical violence (slapping), Angry Seonghwa, Angst, Hongjoong is having a time in this chapter, anxiety, lots of playfulness between Wooyoung and other members, mentions of anxiety and being overwhelmed, I think that's it? masterlist

Y/n couldn’t say anything as Seonghwa pulled her behind him as he took her to wherever Wooyoung was within the building.

“I’m sure you’ll get along well with Wooyoung-ah. He’s so friendly, and he’ll enjoy having another omega to play around with. I can’t believe you’re the only omega that made it to this point. And because of that, I’ll give you my number, so don’t hesitate to call me if you need help, okay? I want to make sure you’re okay, us omegas have to stick together. Plus, between you and I, I want another omega in the group, we’re way outnumbered by the betas and alphas in the group. But don’t tell anyone I said that, they don’t need to know.” Seonghwa kept going on, and she just kept humming and nodding at the appropriate times, as she was a bit overwhelmed, but she kept her scent under control, not wanting to make the older omega aware of how she was feeling.

It seemed to work, as he didn’t seem to notice her nerves. Only moments later, they arrive at a door, the idol opening it and pulling her inside.

“Wooyoung-ah! I brought you a friend!” Seonghwa called out to the younger member, who looked up at him.

“What poor soul did you kidnap this time, hyung?” Wooyoung said, trying to see who was behind Seonghwa.

“She’s not a poor soul! Look, one of the auditionees is an omega! So I brought her here. She’s the only omega in that group, surrounded by a bunch of alphas and betas. I couldn’t leave her alone with them, not when I could bring her here, so she can have some quality time with her own subgender.” Seonghwa told him, his told hinting at the tiniest amount of scolding for the younger omega as well.

“Did you agree, or did hyung drag you here?” Wooyoung asked y/n, directing the attention onto her, as she realized Wooyoung wasn’t the only one in the room. 

“Yah!” Seonghwa interrupted her answer by an offended yell.

“I’ll take that as the latter is the truth. I’m sorry for Seonghwa-hyung’s stupid actions, I swear he usually isn’t this stupid.” Wooyoung apologized, quickly running away with a grin on his face as the elder omega let her hand go in favor of chasing after the younger man.

It was at that point that she realized exactly who else was in the room, as San and Yunho came up to her.

“Y/n, right? How did Seonghwa hyung meet you and bring you here?” Yunho asked her, his head tilted, really making the fan comparison to a golden retriever much more obvious.

“Seonghwa-ssi found the group of us out in the hallway across from the studio, and when he found out I’m an omega, he brought me here to meet Wooyoung-ssi.” She explained, her voice a bit quiet as she felt a bit out of place.

“Ahh, that makes sense. Well, come on and sit down with us, they’ll be occupied for a while.” San interjected, before guiding her over to the area the two had been sat down at, alongside the last two remaining members she had yet to meet.

“Jongho, Yeosang, meet y/n. She’s one of the candidates for our new member, and the only omega candidate as well.” San introduced her.

“Ah, that’s why he brought you here. Seonghwa-hyung always latches on to any omega he finds.” Jongho commented.

“Hello, it’s nice to meet you. I’m Yeosang, though I think you already know that.” Yeosang said, a kind smile on his face that made y/n blush slightly, as she could feel her cheeks heat up.

Yeosang really was a fairy prince, she couldn’t believe how pretty he was, he looked even more ethereal in person.

“Come on, sit down here.” San instructed her, pointing to the empty chair that he had been sitting in prior. The beta had moved onto the couch with Yeosang and Jongho, slightly squishing the two on the couch that was definitely not meant for three people.

She sat down, still nervous at casually sitting around with half of Ateez like it was nothing.

“Don’t be nervous, it’s okay. We’re just normal people.” Yunho told her after noticing her nervousness, a soft smile on his face as he looked over at her.

“Ah, it seems that the others have kidnapped you.” Seonghwa said from just behind her, making her jump in her seat. Wooyoung scoffed at Seonghwa’s actions.

“Give her a little warning, huh? Let’s not scare a prospective member. I’m sorry for Seonghwa’s actions, y/n. That’s your name, right? I’m pronouncing it correctly too?” Wooyoung once again apologized for his hyung’s actions, though this time he was more sincere, not as intent on getting on the elder omega’s nerves.

She confirmed that he had pronounced his name correctly, thanking him for asking. The slightly older omega smiled and waved away her thanks, saying it was the right thing to do, as no one likes their name being mispronounced. He moved to sit on the arm of the chair she was sitting in, looking down at her. “You’re pretty cute, y’know that? I’m sure you look prettier with a blush on your face however.”

His words caught her off guard, and she couldn’t look at him, instead choosing to hide her face in her hands, to the laughter of everyone else. Which only served to make her hide her face even further. Thankfully, Seonghwa was her savior once again.

“Okay, let’s not laugh at her, I think it’s only making her hide more.” The eldest member lightly scolded the others, and y/n felt safe enough to look up once again, only to find Wooyoung had moved to squat right in front of her.

“Hi.”

“Hi?”

“Let’s go!” He told her, grabbing her hand and dragging her out of the chair, and soon, out of the room. “Seonghwa-hyung is about to go murder Hongjoongie-hyung for his actions, so I’m taking you far away. We’re gonna go visit our dongsaengs!”

Back to the Seonghwa and the others…

The four men watched as Wooyoung dragged the other omega out the door behind him, and they chuckled at his actions, absolutely expecting for that to happen.

“Well, I’m leaving now as well. Someone needs to scold our captain.” Seonghwa informed the other four.

“What did he do now?” Yeosang questioned.

“He was rude to y/n and the other auditionees. He kicked them out of the studio, which is unacceptable.” Seonghwa told them, a frown on his face.

The four men weren’t surprised at their captain’s actions, though they were surprised Mingi didn’t try to stop him.

“Well, I’m off now. I’ll come back later. Keep an eye out for the two omegas, yes?” He said, to which he received nods in return.

Seonghwa set out to scold his pack alpha, disappointed in his actions. He was an omega on a mission, and he wouldn’t be dissuaded from his goal. He quickly reached the studio where the two remaining members of their group had sequestered themselves, and by the time he returned to the area, the auditionees had disappeared, most likely taken to wherever they were staying. He pushed open the door, the force behind it making it almost slam against the wall, which caught the attention of the two men inside.

“Seonghwa, darling! Why are you here? I’m surprised that you came all the way over here. Did we forget something today? I’m sorry if we did, Mingi and I got really invested in this new song we’re preparing for the comeback next year.” Hongjoong rambled, maybe already knowing that he was in trouble.

“Sure. It’s definitely not because you yelled and got upset with the auditionees for something they didn’t know about, and who are innocent bystanders caught between your valid dislike of KQ decisions, and the company’s decision to bring in a new member. No matter how valid your feelings are, Kim Hongjoong, it doesn’t excuse that you got upset at people who have nothing to do with the situation.” Seonghwa told him, moving closer as he did so.

“I don’t want a new member, we’re fine as we are now. They should know that they’re not joining a group that wants them. If they know, then at least they won’t be coming in blind.” Hongjoong tried to defend his actions.

Seonghwa was fed up with his excuses, and slapped his pack alpha. The slap was enough to make Hongjoong’s head turn to the side,and the action shocked both of the alphas in the room. Seonghwa had never done that before, no matter how angry he had gotten at any of them.

“You made them stand out in the hallway, and I know you, you gave them the most difficult songs, just so you could see them not live up to your standards, knowing that none of them have been through idol training. So that you could falsely justify that none of them fit as a part of Ateez. So don’t try and justify your actions. I thought that you could put your frustrations aside, and not take them out on innocents. But I guess I didn’t know you as well as I thought I did. Because this is not the Kim Hongjoong I know, nor the pack alpha I know.” Seonghwa said, as he stared down Ateez’s captain with a look of pure disappointment in his eyes.

“I can’t stand to be here. Apologize to the group of auditionees if you want me to talk to you again.” Seonghwa told him, before turning around and walking out the door, ignoring Hongjoong’s pleas for the pack omega to come back.

“You fucked up, hyung. And now you have to fix it. You were right, none of us are happy to get a new member. But at least the others are hiding their feelings, and at least trying to be welcoming. Instead, you never hid your distaste for this whole situation. Sure, maybe they now know that you, nor the rest of us weren’t informed about until yesterday. But now you’ve gone and basically told them that they’re not wanted, that they’re never going to meet your standards for Ateez. I’d bet a good few of them are Atinys, and you really just went against everything you’ve ever said to Atiny. I wonder how many of them will leave Seoul at the end of this, not trusting a word we say, ever again. How many of them you may have just ruined Ateez for. Good luck fixing this hyung.” Mingi lectured Hongjoong, before getting up and leaving himself.

Hongjoong stared at the door as it closed behind Mingi, leaving the alpha in the room by himself, and suddenly everything felt like too much. He only wanted to protect his members. Ateez was his baby, he’s worked on every song and concept and he resented the company for forcing another member on them. For forcing him to now have to change the lore, the line distribution, to have to change it for every single title track. And they’re so close to their next comeback, how are they supposed to refilm music videos, re-record songs, on such short notice? He leaned over the desk, his head in his hands, and he felt tears fall. He had disappointed Seonghwa, Mingi, and probably the others too. He’d have to figure out a way out of this mess, and fix everything. He realized in that moment, just how much he had fucked up.

Hours later, after never hearing anything from their pack alpha, Seonghwa made the trip back to the same studio. Inside, he found Hongjoong in the same chair he left him in, his head laying on the desk and evidence of dried tear tracks on his cheeks. He sighed, leaving the studio temporarily, coming back with a blanket from Hongjoong’s personal studio and laying it over the alpha’s shoulders. He still didn’t want to talk to the man, but he wouldn’t leave him alone like this.

“Chan-hyung, can I ask you for a favor?”

Ok since tumblr is deciding to be picky today (I still love you tumblr) I'm going to make a fourth attempt and hope for the best!

Hi! I'm writing this as an explanatory presentation for the big project that I need to do for my music history class. And what better way to do this than with memes and a long tumblr post! The format of my project would be a series of blog posts diving deeper into each of the topics that I will identify throughout this post.

For context, the Korean pop group Ateez (debuted 2018 with 8 members) participated in a competition called Kingdom: Legendary War. This competition put different groups against each other for the goal of publicity, and to find out which group was the most versatile and talented. For this event, the groups had to perform some original songs as well as cover other groups' songs (for example, Stray Kids covered BTS' "I'll Be Your Man" as part of this event.) Ateez took one of their previous songs, "Wonderland" (2019) and reworked it to include hints of Pirates of the Caribbean and Antonin Dvořák's 9th Symphony to present at the show in 2021.

To begin, Ateez's debut concept was one word: "Pirates". A debut concept in Korean pop is some kind of aesthetic to attract new fans that would be interested in the style of music promised, and provides a storyline for future album releases. For example, EXO's theme is "Alien" while Dreamcatcher has a more "Darkness" vibe to their performances, which makes their shows truly chilling. With that in mind, there is no denying that Ateez has put on an incredible performance with this song. The stage decor, the costumes, and the massive kraken making an appearance-- all hint towards maximalism influence. It is worth mentioning that 3-dimentional projections are relatively common in shows, but some can be really cool. (And horrifying. Check out this bigass spider that Stray Kids had on top of their stage for their performance at the MAMA 2022 award show. Rest in peace to all the people with arachnophobia.)

Regardless, incorporating the musical theme from Pirates of the Caribbean makes sense with their concept, but the inclusion of Dvořák's Symphony still needs more digging to make sense.

The inclusion of Dvořák's Symphony in Ateez's Wonderland is deliberate. This unlikely fusion of musical styles is an intersection of the Korean pop culture with the Western music traditions-- which Korean pop was already doing to a certain extent. The genre resonates with people from across the world, so to make it more accessible and appealing to listeners, the artists started including both Korean and English lyrics, effectively creating a bilingual genre of music. The expansion of this toolkit not only added much more versatility and flow to the lyrics, but also helped the music reach a much wider audience. Some Kpop groups have even experimented with releasing Japanese versions of their Korean songs!

In addition to the last point, the inclusion of Dvořák's Symphony complements the lyrics surprisingly well. Wonderland starts with a fragment of a movement from the symphony, which represents the "New World" (hence its nickname) or America, when it was still "new" and "undiscovered". In the fifth line of the lyrics, Hoongjong sings "gonna find a new world to be mine" which lines up perfectly with the meaning behind the 9th symphony. The fragment of the piece is played on horns, making the section all the more triumphant and epic as well as accentuating the message of the lyrics. Also, Wonderland is quite similar in title to New World...

While Ateez has an excellent arrangement of this piece mashed into their song, they are not the first group to combine classical music with Kpop. For example, Jimin from BTS samples Manuel de Falla's "La Vida Breve" (1904) in his solo song "Lie" (2016), while Gfriend uses "A Poet's Love" from Robert Schumann in "Summer Rain" (2017). But while Ateez might be simply hopping onto this trend, this proves that taking the old and making something new out of it will never go out of fashion. If it does, we'll just have to bring it back and make something new from it!

With that in mind, the inclusion of Dvořák's Symphony into Ateez's Wonderland has an impact on an issue we already touched on earlier: accessibility. Many people look down on Kpop as a genre because they think of it as too basic, or cringe, or simply too formulaic for them. (To quote my brother, he told me that "Kpop songs all sound the same and the singers all look the same too".) While a lot of songs in the genre have the structure and the length of mainstream popular songs, not all of them are necessarily the same. (Some of them can be pretty bad, though-- I cringe every time I hear "Cat and Dog" by TXT, it's so funny hahah) Adding classical music to the genre might attract more listeners to the songs, where they can find something they know and latch onto it as a bridge to appreciate the rest of the music. Dvořák's Symphony in Ateez's Wonderland is appealing to the classical listeners who might not have had that point of contact to get to new music styles before.

It is worth mentioning that the musical style in this song is quite elaborate and polished, which reminds of classical traditions. At a certain point, Jungho sings a B5, which is somewhat like a cadenza in the classical world-- something to show off a soloist's skills that is usually technically challenging and quite impressive. In the revised version of Wonderland released in 2021, the particular singer decided to make the top note even higher and longer than what he sang in the version released in 2019. This decision really helped maximize the impact of the re-release along with the added classical music sampling.
