Childish Gambino - Bando Stone & The New World
Donald Glover’s a man of many talents, whether it’s writing, acting, producing, directing, singing, rapping, and writing music, among many other things, but as of right now, Glover has said that he’s done with his music career. There’s nothing wrong with that, especially since he’s been at it for the last 15 years, give or take, so this retirement is well earned and worth looking back on to understand why it’s a big deal. Starting with some mixtapes in the late 00s, he got big with his debut studio album in 2011, entitled Camp.
I’ve spoken extensively about Camp, and I’ve got a retrospective piece about the album in the works as I write this, but that’s the record that got me into hip-hop. Camp is a record that means a lot to me, but Donald Glover has grown up a lot since then. He was 27 when he released that record, and as a father, husband, and overall older guy now who just turned 40, he’s got a lot more to say and a better way to say it. It all comes together with Bando Stone, an album that is his most experimental, diverse, and frankly interesting.
If anything at all, this reminds me a lot of 2013’s Because The Internet, but not lyrically speaking. Because The Internet was a very ambitious record, showing Glover experimenting with a lot of different sounds, such as R&B, pop, electronic, psychedelia, and other styles of music, but its ambitious was a little too much. Despite really loving most of that record, the album throws a lot of ideas at the wall, and not all of them stick, unfortunately. I really love Bando Stone, too, but I feel the same way about it. It’s great record, and it also features some of Glover’s best songs, but this record is too ambitious and diverse for its own good.
For the most part, a lot of the experimentation works, but there are a few songs I don’t care for, including a couple of seven-minute long ambient and mainly instrumental tracks and it really bogs the album down. At the same time, when this album works, it truly works. There are so many awesome songs here, such as “Lithonia,” “Survive,” “Talk My Shit,” “In The Night,” “Yoshinoya,” and many more. The way he moves between pop, alt-R&B, rap, and other kinds of music is awesome. I will also say that closing track, “A Place Where Love Goes,” is not the best closing track he’s ever put on a record, but it’s one of his best songs period.
Atavista, the finished version of a record put out in 2020, came out earlier this year, and I would still say I like that record more, because it doesn’t have anything that bogs the album down, and I don’t need to skip anything on that record. Atavista just feels like a more complete record, despite having a lot of sounds on it, too, but it’s not as scattershot. As the last Childish Gambino record, this is a real high to go out on, and if you’re a fan of his, or a fan of pop, rap, or alt-R&B, I think you’ll really dig this. I wish the album was more cohesive as a whole, but it’s easy to forgive that when the stuff that works is really damn good.

3.15.20 original release note:
i met w/ an oracle on a friend's recommendation. she cleansed me and told me three things: 1. someone would die 2. i had a star on my head 3. stay close to god then someone died. and my vision was cleared. but i could not touch them. i felt on my own, which had, before, always been enough. i met w/ the oracle again in a different form. she asked me "how long do u think people wait?" "as long as they need to?" "they're not going to wait forever." at the dining room table after lunch, my oldest asked "what are you looking for?" as i stared at the mountain made for someone else. i told my brother the dream where i asked prince to see my father and prince said he was "fine". i told my brother the dream where all people screamed and clawed at each other in the street. and i knew of secret entry into a safe haven, but could not remember where or why it was. i told my love the dream where my father held our unborn son, hiding underground as i prepared for a fight i knew i would lose. and how i woke up sobbing, and how i felt deep shame and wanted to join where i imagined he was. but then a star the color of ur smile shined onto my forehead. and i laid back in my closet, nesting on dirty clothes and watchtowers my mother had asked me to read but knew i never would. this closet, that once housed my shame and refusal to love my most ugly, had unintentionally allowed truth to collect, and form, and fall back onto me. in the first book, i will express u. i will write u. i will sing u. i will bring them as brothers and sister and shape u for us, not just in our image, but in the boundless colored canopy of eternity. - D
