Hello, friends!
I hope everyone has enjoyed the early access to 7KPP! Now that we've had a few months to play around and try out many MANY branches in the game (and Mod Tina has had some time to recover from finishing her graduate degree), it's time for 7KPP Week!
As a reminder, and for any newcomers to the fandom, 7KPP Week is basically a week of short prompts that we the mods come up with, intended as an opportunity to inspire and share fanworks that showcase our love for the game. Any types of fanworks are welcome, from fanart or fanfiction to meta, playlists, or just long rambles about your thoughts! We're all just here to spread our love and positivity!
Note: As the game has been out for several months now, spoiler content is perfectly welcome, and indeed encouraged in some of the prompts, and some prompts may include spoilers! Please be aware if you wish to participate or spectate!
So, without further ado, the details!
When: Between October 20 and October 26! Where: Post on tumblr (and elsewhere is fine too but weāll be organizing here on tumblr)
The prompts are as follows! (Since some of these are rather vague, there are some more details and some questions that might help inspire you under the cut!)
Day One - Background (Remix) Day Two - Date Night Day Three - Letters Day Four - Angst Week (Turnabout) Day Five - Secrets Day Six - Suitcase Day Seven - Epilogue
Feel free to use the tag ā7KPP Week 2024ā and/or mention this blog, and weāll do our best to reblog everything!
As always, please feel free to send an ask/DM me if you have any questions! We look forward to seeing everyoneās submissions, and hope that you have a great autumn!
-Mod Tina
Day 1 - Background (Remix)
What is your character's background and why did you pick it? How do they feel about it? If you've talked about this before, you can instead consider the following: Have you considered using an existing MC for one of the secret backgrounds? Is there another background you think might be interesting for your MC? Elements of another background you could incorporate into them for an AU?
Day 2 - Date Night
If your MC had a friendship date (or a real one), what would it be? How would it play out? Who would they invite? What stat(s) would it raise? What would the achievement for success be named?
Day Three - Letters
Over the course of the game, we received letters written from loved ones of both our characters and our LIs. Who would send the LI a letter on behalf of your MC? What would it say?
Day Four - Angst Week (Turnabout)
Let's share in the angst of week 5! If your LI had a near-death experience during the courting phase, how would your MC react? Alternatively, did your MC ever consider breaking things off? If so, why?
Day Five - Secrets
If your MC had a discoverable secret at the Summit for other characters to find, what would it be? Would it be a chain? Something that is needed to get to know them? Is it blackmail material?
Day Six - Suitcase
Does your MC bring any non-essentials with them to the Summit? What do they take home with them afterwards?
Day Seven - Epilogue
We got glimpses of what the ending looked like for your character post-Summit. Are there any other scenes you have in your mind's eye? Anything that you would change? What does life look like for your characters after the end?

RT Giving Thanks week appreciation post
Another important for me here on tumblr and just wonderful person that I unfortunately missed to shout out in the main (re)post chain but really want to give a credit for at least here (cause she absolutely deserves one): @cawyden-gaming!!
Without her I wouldn't even be here with you now and I would've given up on idea continuing my blog further and would've still stuck to twitter (eugh), just you imagine.
Back in the February I was stuck in the shadowban for TEN MONTHS without realising it!?! I just thought website is messing up with my posts as twitter algorithms sometimes do, and thought this place just not for me. So, a thought persistently crossed my mind of abandoning it for the time being or even deleting it. But interacting with Cawyden (at lest, trying to, given being sbanned xD) and peeps of RT fandom, with her helping me out in the DMs, actually encouraged me to get investigating what problems are and fight for it.
Cawyden writes a wide array of detailed guides and insights on the game I think many of us found useful (and for Heinrix in particular), and also worth to mention: her fanfiction work 'Immortalium' featuring her RT Venria and Heinrix (check it out on Ao3!)
Thank you for your incredible support and faith, thank you for sticking with us, supporting artists and creatives, and contibuting with such a vital information for the community! And thank you for your immence help with recovering my blog!!!! This is the first of the best things happened to me this year for sure, as I'm still faithfully mainly sticking to tumblr to this day as my main social media, and I'm so grateful for it.
We will definitely cross paths again and I'd really love to chat more with you (and also about Venria of course), just know you are amazing šš

Yo! I'm Cou, like in Acoustic! That's where the 'cousticks' comes from (mind blown, yet?) I'm a whole 21 years old, and would prefer they/it pronouns.
This account is my dumping ground for fandom posting, including analysis, aus (which you can find a list of here), writing, doodles, and more! You can find some of this writing on AO3, too.
I follow back from the url 'causticacoustic', as this is one sideblog of several. Please do not be alarmed by a purple Master Chief icon following you out of nowhere, or leaving asks, that's me!
Minors are welcome, but I'd prefer only my 18+ friends DM me. 18+ mutuals are welcome to my discord, too! Just send me a DM.
I encourage talking to me. Be it via asks (anon or not!), comments, reblogs, DMs, whatever, I love conversation, I'm just a little incapable of starting it, usually.
More blog info below!
Content
This is mostly a BSD blog. In the future it may also contain other media. Vanitas no Carte is probably going to make an appearance eventually, who knows what'll come after that.
Other media interests I doubt I'll post about here include:
the Halo universe
FLCL (only the og. we don't talk about the reboots.)
Portal games
Dishonored games
bad action movies in general
and more!
I also have other non-media interests, but I won't clog this up with them. You should totally ask me about them though.
I don't post or reblog anything NSFW. This is 90% because I don't want to forget to tag something, 5% because I'm ace and don't really need that here, and 5% because I don't want to make this blog a place minors can't go.
Tagging
Honestly, I'm not great at tagging upsetting content. If you need something specific tagged then leave me a DM or ask (anon or not) or something and I'll try my best to keep a running list of what needs tagged and how (I keep a Google Doc for myself for my tagging system and will happily add your needed tags to it). Chances are, you'd be seeing violence or blood. If you're in the BSD fanbase, I'm kind of making a blanket assumption that you're okay with that when you interact around here. If not? Good luck, I guess.
I give all characters their own individualized tags. I'm working on making them all short song lyrics. Please feel free to ask about any tags you see! Characters that haven't been given lyric tags yet are given the tag 'placeholder [character] tag.' If they're an au-specified character, such as from Beast, its specifically 'beast [Character] tag'. I have a handful of AU and/or concept emoji tags. If I ever see it relevant enough, I'll make a key for them.
Drawings are tagged #doodles. 'Personal' not really content posts are tagged #sticky note. More put-together posts I intend to actually circulate in the world are tagged with the fandom and relevant characters / novels, ex. #bsd dazai, #bsd fifteen, etc. People I interact with frequently might find themselves with their own tags as well! Mutuals, please don't think I suck for not giving you a tag or something pretty pretty please. My brain is very tired so I'm limiting it to those that appear often I promise I'm not slighting you personally on purpose.
Asks
I love getting asks. They can be actual questions on my thoughts, chain mail, insults, little gifts, whatever. I don't care. I love them and will treat them all with care. I have anon enabled and will always have it enabled. I'm also a big fan of ask games and have a ton of them tagged under #ask games. Those are all active all the time forever (though if its an older one you'd have to specify) I just like having things to talk about. Please talk to me.
This is very long and says absolutely nothing. Please direct all questions, comments, or complaints to the ask box.

20 questions for fic writers
Tagged by @a-little-bit-of-ravioli
1. How many works do you have on A03?
31! Wow! Not even counting my FF.net and Spirit (portuguese site) fics too. I think adding them would be around 50? I know for sure I have much more than that in my drive.
2. What's your total A03 word count?
739.765 Whaaaaat? That's so many! And it's mostly the ones I write in english!
3. What fandoms do you write for?
Inuyasha, Katekyo Hitman Reborn, My Hero Academia and Legend of Zelda, more specifically LU!
4. What are your top five fics by kudos?
A Link in a chain . My first LU fic! My baby <3 Modern day, soulmate marking and platonic soulmates. The main focus is Wild getting to know them, then Legend accepting the others and finally Spirit joining them.
All Might said 'No'. This was a prompt for a MHA server and I had a lot of fun! All Might is the literal quirk, like a ghost protecting the Midoriyas.
Alpha and Omega. That was a challenge! In almost every way possible. Omegaverse, Toshinko
Merman. Also from a prompt. Merperson au, Toshinko.
Soul clock. Also from a prompt. Soulmate au where there's a clock counting down the time until you meet your soulmate. Toshinko and some platonic relationships mentioned too
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
Always! I love to receive comments. Even key-smashing make my day a lot better when I check the email
6. What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
Probably The Sacred Trees. It's more like a happy ending with heavy consequences. I live for happy ending, not sorry about that. They will suffer but they will be happy eventually.
7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
All of them? I'd dare say the happiest was Took You Long Enough, a Midlink reunion during LU and then afterwards. From the concluded, that's the happiest one but there's an even better one coming from a different fic not posted yet :D
8. Do you get hate on fics?
Not recently, but I did in the Inuyasha and Katekyo fandom! I usually say a simple "thank you for your critique" because this usually throw people off enough that they leave me alone.
9. Do you write smut?
No! There's some heavily implied things, but nothing graphic or very descriptive (by very heavily, I'm counting the omegaverse fic too; I liked the concept but wanted something with less sex)
10. Do you write crossovers?
Not oftenly, but yes! The last one I wrote was a MHA and LU crossover when the brain was divided between them.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Once! The person copied one of my biggest series in portuguese, changed the name of the characters and some physical descriptions but it was basically the same. I asked them to put down, but had to dm some of the site's admin to make sure it was deleted.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
Yes! Once by a friend from the MHA fandom and they encouraged me a lot to write more in english and give it a try. I'm here now so thanks to her!
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Yes! It will never see the light of day though, but my bestie and I created a whole novel about a couple and how the wife slowly got mad and then killed him in the end.
14. What's your all-time favorite ship?
Hmm, that's too hard! I have many favorites!
Probably Zelink. LoZ is my old new obsession, it always go back and forth between the games as they are released or as I play again and the animes I'm watching. BotW and TotK gave me so much shipping material I'll be happily reading it until the next game is released.
A close second would be Kyoya/Chrome from KHR. I just love their dynamic, specially when they help each other to grow (and Mukuro being a gremlin jealous older sibling, that's the cherry on top)
15. What's the WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
A fanfic for the Grand Chase game when I played it. Ryan almost dies when they cross a desert, Ronan is sent to another world and needs to complete some quests to do that (he's my fav alright? I just needed a reason to send him to another world and do quests by himself, maybe question his faith and all that). I wrote maybe 30k? The idea is lovely and taunts me from a distance but I've never come back to writing it
16. What are your writing strengths?
A very good question... I'd say creating AUs. I love world building and leaving small details that have significance for the story later, I think I do an okay job at balacing dialogue and descriptions. My beta says I'm good at leaving crumbles in the story to solve the problem in the end too
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
Punctuation in any language! Ugh, I just love commas sooooo much!
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?
English punctuation doesn't make much sense for me until now! I'm relying heavily on the corrector and trying to read more to see if I can absorb the info.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
Inuyasha!
20. Favorite fic you've ever written?
I'm very self indulgent when writing so I like most of them. I'd say the longest time favorite in portuguese is Librarian, a Toshinko fic where Inko is the hero and Toshinori is a librarian she meets because her son is a book geek. In english is A Link in a chain.
Wow, that was a lot! Alright, lemme tag @musical-chan , @arecaceae175 and anyone else interested in doing! :D

Info
You can tag me in tag games and piccrew chains and whatever! Tag me in just something you think I'll like! I love being @'d, even if I don't respond
I love getting asks! Please dont be scared, I think the greatest harm to sending me an ask is me not answering because I can't think of anything to say. But I don't secretly hate you or anything.
I am also very very deeply forgetful which mixes with my poor passage of time. You are very much allowed to poke me with a stick if I take awhile
Totally fine to ask me to unblock you, I'm willing to reassess. Very willing to admit I can be a bit too trigger happy abt it
If you're interacting with me please please don't negatively call any characters psychopaths, sociopaths, or narcissists; I am so very tired of seeing these being used as a synonym for 'bad person'

I, can be really awful about actually doing things, even and especially if theyre things i WANT to do. If I mention I'm drawing something but it's gone unposted, or you sent me something or an ask and I didn't respond within like. A week. Poke me with a stick, I not only encourage this but I want you to do so. Art does not take me long if im actually drawing. I'm also super forgetful and WILL guilt myself into never responding if I took too long in my mind. So I'm telling you. I have absolutely no problem at all with being sent reminders or being asked for updates

Not directly to Generation Loss, but I've been given a lot of thoughts to the younger generation of minecraft streamers and their attempts to do big projects to "break out of" the minecraft mold: obviously, with Ranboo, we have Generation Loss, which seemed to go over well with his fanbase (enough so that he's stated he's thinking of quitting MCC, which is really the only tie he's had to the game for about a year atp), with Tommy, we have his New York vlog series and now his liveshows, and with Tubbo, while still Minecraft-adjacent, we have Tubnet. I'm wondering if you have any thoughts about what would make a cc successful at shifting their core audience into a brand new project that isn't necessarily the type of content that they got famous for. Do the audiences of all three ccs differ enough that they would need different strategies to shift their content? My running theory is that Generation Loss was mostly successful among his fanbase because it played on the tropes that were apparent in his minecraft lore from the beginning: mind control, a protagonist forced to do awful things against his will, a base npc type character that occasionally has overwrought freakouts over their lack of control, etc. It was just in a medium outside of Minecraft.
Meanwhile, Tommy is finding himself in a rut because he can't fully apply his storytelling skills to a non-Minecraft setting (in part because he's focusing more on comedy, and while his fans like his sense of humor, I think, in his lore, they also liked the Marvel-esque main character energy, which doesn't translate when it's just the cc having a huge ego, and the angst) and his vlogs, when they aren't completely on the backburner, seem too formulaic to have their early charm. As for Tubbo, while obviously a minecraft server is, well, minecraft, there wasn't enough "entertainment"/lore/a connection to the streamer to encourage his core audience to play Tubnet, at least not in the form it was released as. In short, I feel traditional mcyt-ers are looking for narratives or entertainment value from these bunch of ccs. Although maybe Lovejoy's success goes against this theory. It just seems like all the younger minecraft streamers have attempted to release a large project within the last year or so, and while that might not be indicative of them trying to leave the fandom, I sense a restlessness in all of them and a wish to move on.
(Okay so this is going under a readmore because it is a longāun)
As of 2023 in a post-lockdown and post-DSMP world I got the sense that a lot of people were restless regarding what to do and where to go next, CC and audience alike. I think that because the DSMP was such a specific time and place in peopleās lives itās inevitable that the majority of people (because those numbers were huge) will have moved on to watching/wanting other things, so retention through sameness may not work, but youāre onto something with the feeling like thereās no in-character story to follow anymore. The thing I poke at from time to time is that thereās no out-of-character plot to follow anymore either, most of the irl narratives have been resolved or brought off-camera so even the RPF people have to scavenge for food.
Lovejoy has a rising star narrative that people can invest in if they want; with them breaking free of associations with mcyt to be treated like serious musicians, and I think it also serves a purpose ofpeople trying to wash off post-mcyt shame in themselves. (āthis is Wilbur Soot and this is WILL GOLDā they tweet, as though that is not a literal man onstage performing, but theyāve already decided what they want to believe in.) Iām sensing some misguided stabs to try and not be treated like the bottom of the food chain in the vocal fanbase by desperately trying to push away from the MCYT association, which is probably where those peoples heads are at all around. Most lovenjoyers are fine with it and just enjoy the music because itās obviously how they got there, but thereās clearly a friction going on.
Ranboo has a kind of watered-down version of that following them. I remember when I first saw someone say very defensively that Ranboo wasnāt an MCYT, they were a variety streamer. Ranboo has been drifting away from MC for a long time, both moving into the variety realm and daydreaming about Genloss. When people win the internet lottery young it makes sense to want to put the money towards a project that they would only be stuck imagining otherwise, and Genloss very much feels like that kind of dream. I would say that Ranboo has successfully pivoted to variety and even completed their first big project, but theyāll need to re-capture that audience every time they make a Generation from now on, which could be hard to do with breaks in between.
Tubbo has also moved into variety streaming, which is kind of a necessity for the hours he keeps. He also has an ongoing love for big projects like Recipe for Disaster. Tubboās longterm investment and labor of love was Tubnet, which would have established him as the owner of a server like the one that he used to play on when he was younger. I donāt know what Tubboās relationship to storytelling is, Iāve heard he does it on a small scale but he also has a unique love of engineering, which Tubnet was more about. As far as I know there were a lot of things that eventually led to Tubnetās low player turnout, but one of them had to have been low demand; I remember people saying that there was no use re-inventing Hypixel when Hypixel already had all the Hypixel players. Regardless of if this was fair or not, Tubnet didnāt wind up developing a large player base from his fame, which unfortunately shows that not all attention rolls over equally.
Tommy has been pouring his storytelling skills into writing his live show, which heās advertising as the best thing heās ever written as well as his biggest self-disclosure. Itās autobiographical theatre, but also a puppet musical-- we will see what the audience reviews think. Tommyās been experimenting the most to see that he wants to do next, I know heās stated that 2022 was a big ātryā year for him and heās also talked about focusing on the quality of viewers over the quantity because focusing on hard statistics made him miserable. I know Tommy doesnāt want to move away from Minecraft, heās actually very tightly holding on and trying to find ways to love it again, as well as make it worthwhile for audiences. Some of the things Tommy has been saying lately make it sound like he wants to turn back time a bit, recapture what streaming and video gamed used to feel like for him when he was younger, so weāll see what resonates with the others. Thereās a lot of really dense nostalgia around Minecraft (look at these comment sections theyāre haunting) and judging from his current taste in video essays heās got a moderate case of it.
I think the pattern here is marrying the thing that you want to with what audiences want, which is infinitely harder to do than it is to say. Human motivation is fluid and weird, and not many people are going to be able to say what it is theyāll want or like until something or someone is put in front of them. What people want also changes over time, so it can be a bit like chasing the wind or catching an updraft to get in the air when it comes to getting an audience. Thereās a formula for the YouTube algorithm, but thereās not a clear map for the less cheap or predictable parts of the psyche.Ā
Even when youāve got an audience, when itās time to pivot over to something completely new itās kind of time to be a whole new person to them; your function and role in someoneās life is changing. Itās rolling the dice and seeing if you can do and be something that resonates in a new form. People fall out of love with other people all the time, and I think that CCs get the same effect as the seasons change-- sometimes people change and cause a split, sometimes people stay the same and get stale over time. For the same reason that people can be ride or die because a CC is themselves, when someone falls out of love with a cc thereās not much that can make them stay if the rest of the content doesnāt deliver. I donāt see people talk about it at length, but I have seen this image make the rounds so itās a shared thing. Ā

Shortest answer is I think thereās no formula that can be divined outside of a retroactive twelve hour video essay breakdown of each individualās creators strengths and weaknesses, and a matching breakdown of where the audienceās head was at. Itās much easier to look back on something specific and say āthis is why this worked / didnāt workā than grind out guidelines beyond āavoid making the audience feel completely alienated or betrayed.ā It can really come down to the audience, who can be attracted and put off by people for reasons that seem borderline intangible, like āauthenticity.ā
The good news is audiences need change and newness even if the content they like has a pattern, otherwise they would keep watching the same video. Even channels that make āmore of the sameā put out a continuation of what they did last time, moving things along or adding to the collection somehow. Whether itās in-character or out of character or a kind of abstract āI show up to this channel and things I like are on it,ā I think people like to be able to make sense of what theyāre clicking on so that they keep doing it. As long as the core remains intact, the people who are sufficiently invested in the creator tend to stick around unless life gets in the way.
As for the restlessness, I think that being on the frontier is kind of addictive. Not long ago someone pointed out to me that I had started wondering what the next big thing would be on behalf of the CCs because itās an interesting question, especially coming off the back of the DSMP blowing up. I think that online can be a very punishing place if you donāt keep up with trends and frontiers since things change so fast, itās rewarding if you get in early but youāre in danger if youāre left behind. This is actually as true for regular internet users as it is for CCs, think of the strangely potent social shame of using an out of date meme or not being up on the state of The Discourse, youāll genuinely get punished if youāre too far out of sync with things. Weāre in a year that is both hung over on lockdown and desperately trying to get moving again, right in the moment before the answer to what happens next is āobvious.ā Ā

Noncon stories, Fantasy vs. Reality, and more. fucking. issues.
Recently, Iāve been hit with some drama as to why Iām a ābad personā by various, anonymous users in this fandom. I thought Iād try to address the claim, address my stance on fics that involve noncon, and what I think about the āTumblr mentalityā after everything Iāve seen of this place. I should also note that Iām going to use the specific words and phrases Iāve been forced to constantly repeat as explaining my stance has been very difficult for me, as Iām a person whoās apparently challenging to understand.
This is going to be a long post, with subjects that's obviously going to trigger people so here's a warning right now..
That being said, Iām going to dive into this with some shit Iāve definitely said before:
āConsensual Nonconā Kink
The Appeal of this Theme in Fanfiction:
I don't think calling fics that involve noncon "rape fics" and those who enjoy it "getting off to rape" is a very good way to put it. Many engaging and well done media pieces often involve some very dark themes. Again, Monster by Meg and Dia is a song that features the main character sexually abusing a girl he met. You COULD call this a "rape song", but acting as if the rape is the only thing that matters in this story would be pretty..naive. The story has to do with an emotionally, and physically neglected/abused boy, who grows up and becomes an attention/love starved monster who's SO starving for validation, that he believes forcing himself upon a girl he knew would "prove" to himself that he's capable of being touched and loved. Of course, the main character eventually realizes that rape is not love, that what he did was wrong, and later kills himself in his own bathtub with kerosene and a match.
However, the assault aspect of this song is still a meaningful and alluring part because it talks about how emotional and physical abuse can warp someone's perspective on reality, to the point where they think forcing someone to "stay" with them is how to create a healthy relationship. That's the same energy I have for noncon fics, especially in the slasher fandom. Many slasher fics that contain noncon often have to do with the slasher preying on the reader because of their own fucked up mind. It's intriguing because, let's be honest, pretty much none of the slashers are in a pretty good mental space lmao. Thus, noncon actually falls more in line with how slashers would go about what they believe is a "good relationship" more often than quite a bit of fans here seem to believe. Again, Michael got boners, Jason chained someone up, Fredddy smooches people against their will, Billy Lenz is a sex offender, Chromeskull makes snuff, yada yada yada, you know the drill. That being said, it's interesting to see noncon being expressed with these characters because it gives us a new perspective on how fucked up they'd likely be if the world of sex and relationships was introduced to these characters.
Now why would some people become sexually aroused by the events of the story? First of all, how does āConsensual Nonconā kink work?
u/Jumbledcode. (2015). āCan anyone comment on why people (someone like me) enjoy rape/non-con story lines?ā. r/TwoXChromosomes.
āI'd suggest that there are several factors that make up the appeal of non-con fantasies.
Guilt/Self-image: For many people, their sexual/relationship desires don't necessarily match their image of themselves, or alternatively they feel guilt over others' perceptions of those desires. Rape fantasies allow them to mantain some illusion of denial over their desires while still indulging in the idea of them.
Responsibility/Laziness: The appeal of abdicating control isn't limited to avoiding guilt; it's very tempting to want a scenario where you have no responsibility for maintaining your lifestyle/happiness. Similarly to before, it's the appeal of being given what you secretly want without even having to choose it.
Transgressiveness: A rape scenario has overtones of danger and taboo-breaking. These can easily be exciting and can therefore be a turn-on.
Desire: Being wanted is often a huge turn-on, and the idea of someone desiring you enough to break laws and disregard everything to have you plays into this feeling.
To me, it seems that most people who fantasize about being the subject of rape do so due to some mix of these motivations I've mentioned. Of course, there are also those who have experiences which have taught them to associate non-consent with their sexuality, but that's a separate issueā.
What if the Fanfic Only Involves the Act though? Wouldnāt it Encourage Actual Rape?
Letās differentiate fantasy and reality. Towards those with the noncon kink: it offers arousal because of the ideas listed above (the idea of the reader not having to make any moves and the character doing the āintimate workā FOR them, the excitement of such a taboo sexual encounter, and the feeling to be desired through an altered, brutish encounter). Rape is the use of sex to remove control over the victimās mind and body. The readers DO have control over whether or not they get to āencounterā (the choice to even read) this fantasy, so right away consent is present in reality, and no actual rape is being done.
Now does this mean that the kinkers are getting off on the idea of rape? Not really.
The thing with self-inserts is that it allows you to be connected to the story. That way, even if the story has you bruised up and begging for mercy, a part of you-you (if youāre a kinker) wants to keep reading it as you find it exciting. That way, as you and story-you are connected, what you really want in such a fantasy is for it to keep going despite the brutish, possessive, however yet desired nature of the character youāre dreaming about dealing with. (repeat: the idea of the reader not having to make any moves and the character doing the āintimate workā FOR them, the excitement of such a taboo sexual encounter, and the feeling to be desired through an altered, brutish encounter). That being said, itās still entirely possible for kinkers to have their personal space and wishes crossed, and ultimately assaulted. Us enjoying the fantasy of such a reverie sexual encounter does not spell out to real life because (in reality) weāre not horny all the time, we would still like our bodies to be respected when we find it necessary, and we still have feelings as weāre still human.
āFantasy (including video games) leads to violenceā fallacy.
It would be like assuming that shooters in games like GTA fantacise about murder, encourage it, and would do it in real life. Taking fabricated anger out on virtual bodies or NPCs is quite different from the weight of murder (the killing of another human being). One can play video games with lots of violence towards such fabricated characters, while discouraging violence towards human beings. The act of using a game controller to beat up Donkey Kong in Smash, to shoot Nazi zombies in a Black Ops game, or to kill a Geisha in Little Nightmares is incredibly, and immensely different from completely eradicating the life of a person on Earth, and to assume that everyone who plays violent video games would spill out to violence in reality would be to participate in a ridiculous fallacy. Yes, there are outliers who are feeble minded enough to let their fantasies influence their actions towards actual people, but I must repeat that there are also people who utilize these fantasies for their personal satisfaction, while understanding the weight of the real world around them (and choosing not to act so detrimentally). Therefore, it wouldnāt be fair as it would be unnecessary to blatantly say that all fantasies are horrible and should be entirely eradicated if there ARE many people who ARE aware enough to understand that some thoughts are better off staying in fiction.
Now is the time to address whatās been said:
...Firstly, I think itās very disgusting that random users, on Tumblr of all places, are trying to manipuate random victims of sexual assault into hating something or someone just because these users FEEL like āitās the right thing to doā.. People, victims of sexual assault arenāt your fucking dogs. Theyāre not carriage horses, theyāre not your work mules, theyāre not your guns and swords...theyāre just people who normally wanna be left the fuck alone like everyone else. Plus, there ARE people who have experienced sexual assault who take joy in reading such dark storylines. What would these users have to say to them? That theyāre not ārealā victims? That what theyāve experienced ānever happenedā? That theyāre ājust likeā their own perpetrators for using the consensual nonconsent to miraculously help them overcome their trauma? Should they really abandon their coping mechanism just because there are other victims who cope in different ways?
..If you seriously believe that all people who have gone through a traumatic event are gonna cope in the exact same fucking way, you literally donāt even know enough about PTSD to even be making a bold statement about cope.
This is the part where I finally realized that people, and especially those on Tumblr, donāt actually care about rape victims as much as they may claim. Many users on here, on this platform and in this fandom, donāt truly give a flying monkey shit about rape victims as people, nor what they have to say about the subject. Rape victims..on this place..seem to be used mainly as a means of figurative weaponry for a groupās subjective morality.
I find the similarity close to radical feminism. Radical feminists often believe that women, from near and far, have to do everything in their power to ādestroyā the patriarchy. This would mean disobeying the societal expectation of women, even if there are some women who take joyment in engaging in some societal standards for their personal liking. An example would be sex work. Radical feminists acknowledge the flaws in performing sex work, but believe that NO woman should EVER partake even if the woman wants to do it out of her own free will. In demonizing and ostracizing any woman who doesnāt fall into the radical feminist agenda, radical feminists actually contradict their purpose to ālet women be freeā. At this point, you realize that radical feminists often donāt actually give a fuck about what any woman wants for herself. Instead, radical feminists want to utilize any woman they can find just to flip off men as a group.
In Tumblr users trying to āstand upā for rape victims for their personal āholier-than-thouā ego, they fail to care enough about the very people they defend to understand the dynamics of some of their coping mechanisms, thus begin to bully some members of the group they claim to protect because of the very narcissism, misunderstanding, and controlling nature going on behind their own āactivismā. So now that some users have found something to hate, in this case being noncon stories, they attempt to manipulate victims of rape into ostraciszing and demonizing fantasies and other victims of rape just because the āactivistsā themsleves donāt like it. Even trying to argue that rape victims have a ādutyā to agree with everything these āactivistsā try to do for them.
Sounds awfully familiar to the attitude democrats have towards any minority when itās time to vote. āI care about you...but you have to agree with everything I say and believe because I want what I think is best for you. If you disagree with me, youāre ungrateful and a traitorā.
Now...a little about myself.
Iām not sure of everyone else whoās into the noncon type of story, but I use it to get away from my past. In noncon stories, I want to read what happens in the chapters. I want to imagine them for morbid curiosity and arousal I feel at the time being. In reality, my attackers didnāt care when I wasnāt in the mood, and never gave me a choice. In noncon stories, I get to choose the character I want to encounter in the fantasy and NOT have it picked FOR me. In real life, I didnāt get to choose who did some things to me. In noncon stories, I get to stop reading them and do something else whenever Iām not feeling it anymore. In reality? My attackers kept going because, in the situation, it was no longer up to me. After noncon stories, my body doesnāt walk away with bruises, bite marks, and physical reminders every time I take my clothes off or try to masturbate. In real life...that shit can mark you, disease you, and then traumatize you. With the stories, I get to delete my search history, join another fandom, and act like nothing ever happened. For reality? Your own body is a reminder of what happened because it was real. In reality, Iām NEVER gonna fucking forget what happened. Iāll be lucky if my own mind and body doesnāt haunt me for at least one day..
So seeing that someone, and probably multiple people not only tried to use victims of sexual assault for their own āgo get emā dogs, but to try and phrase me as someone who loves and encourages such an assault on human beings? After the things I felt? After the things I tasted? After pathetically searching for the support of relatives, just to get shut down with āyouāre lyingā?..
...All the times I've been held down..threatened..clothes getting snagged off..parts being opened and touched after I've fought to just get the fuck away from certain people...
According to this anon..."she likes rape".
...I guess I just fucking LOVED EVERYTHING THEN.
You know...all my life Iāve been misunderstood by many people. Itās honestly really disappointing that even now when Iām better at explaining myself than ever, Iām STILL being phrased as a āpsychopathā by random people who havenāt even taken the time to even know me. Not even from a minute-long conversation through a damn computer screen. And you wanna know the funny thing? Iām probably being laughed at as this is being read. Some of these users, these internet stalkers, are probably giggling, smiling, and saying āHaha YES we GOT the bitch!! Cry you piece of shit SLUT!!ā. So maybe explaining my past experiences to help everyone understand why some people may use noncon stories to their fantasy advantage is gonna land me messages going: āYou havenāt been raped you lying bitchā, āMaybe you should get raped againā, āYou definitely enjoyed itā, and the overused, yet strong āKill yourselfā.
So how am I gonna end this message? With me saying that many of you, who THINK youāre doing the right thing by justifying harassment and trying to manipulate others into joining your little crusade to bully people away from the fandom (over extremely mundane fucking things)...arenāt really good people. At best, in this case...youāre fucking stupid. You will never truly speak for any of the marginalized groups you claim to know like the back of your hand. Simply, you will never. be. a hero.
If by chance, by an astrological chance..that any random user wants to come up and apologize out of the blue for talking such shit and for saying such things..I don't even wanna hear it...just get the fuck out of my face..

Pond Diving - Katelynw93

Welcome to todayās Pond Diving Spotlight! We hope that you enjoy this little insight to our members and perhaps even find some useful tips for your own writing. Happy reading!
Want to volunteer, send us an ask! Weāre looking forward to learning more about all of you! Not sure what PD is, you can learn more here.

āDonāt Be Koi About Itā - All About You
Name: Katelyn, but most people call me Kate, Katie or sometimes even Kat.
Age: 27
Location: Originally from Kansas, but have been located in Upstate NY for the last six years.
URL:Ā @katelynw93ā
Why did you choose your URL: Itās usually the username that I use for everything and if Iām being honest, Iām not very creative when it comes to titles or names. Lol. Iāve been meaning to change it; I just need to decide on what.Ā Ā
What inspired you to become a writer: Well, when I was in middle school (maybe seventh or eighth grade), my best friend and I decided to write a story together and post it on a fanfiction site (Canāt remember the site name, though.) And I just loved it. We never did finish that story. Lol. But eventually I started branching out and found some roleplay writing sites.Ā Ā
How long have you been writing: Started writing in middle school (2006/2007), but really got into it in 2009 with RP. However, September of this year (2020) was the first year I started really writing fics by myself and opening posting them.Ā
What do you do when you are not writing i.e. Job/Hobbies etc? I work a lot, usually an average of 40+ hours a week; I am a manager at a popular food chain restaurant and on the weekends, a cashier at a gas station to provide a little extra cash for my family. When Iām not working, my time is spent with my two kids; Alekzander (Zander) who just turned five this past November and Lincoln (Link) who will be two in February. Outside of work and my family, Iām usually writing. Sometimes if Iām feeling extra creative or inspired, Iāll create a few crackships for couples I really enjoy. Lol.Ā
How long have you been in the SPN Fandom? I actually found Supernatural around the same time I started writing, so back in ninth grade, so 2008/2009. It was honestly an accident too, because I was searching for Smallville episodes (I have an unhealthy addiction to Superman and DC/Marvel.) and stumbled upon an ad for Supernatural. Was instantly intrigued and fell in love. Seasons 1 - 5 (the Kripke era) are my favorite.Ā
Are you in any other fandoms and do you write for them? Oh yea, I love TV shows and movies, and as Iāve already stated above, I love DC and Marvel. Iāve also written for Greyās Anatomy and am willing to write for more, but SPN, DC and Greyās are currently the only ones Iāve written for. I love The Vampire Diaries, One Tree Hill, Private Practice, Station 19, 9-1-1, Game of Thrones, The Witcher, Merlin, Dexter, Psych, and so, so many more. There are too many to list. Lol.Ā Ā
Do you do any writing outside of fanfiction? If so, tell us about it? Other than RPing, not really. I mean, I did try to do an original story with my friend when I was younger, but it never went anywhere. But I am willing to try someday.Ā
Favorite published author: Other than the really big authors like; J.K. Rowling, George R.R. Martin, Jim Butcher, Nicholas Sparks, Suszanne Collins, I really like (and maybe itās cliche) Stephenie Meyer. The Twilight Saga made me fall in love with reading and eventually, that love led me to writing. Those books hold a special place in my heart.Ā Ā
Have you ever read a book that made an impact on your life? Which one and why?: Well, I guess I sort of answered that one already. But there truly are so many amazing books out there and still so many more to discover.Ā
Favorite genre of fanfic (smut, angst, fluff, crack, rpf, etc): Oh man, Iām not gonna lie, a majority of what I read is probably smut. But I am particularly fond of angst. I want you to make me cry. Really dig and stab into my emotions. Lol. And then come back in with some fluff. Haha.Ā
Favorite piece of your own writing: Well, that would have to be Sweet Cherry Pie because it was really the first piece Iāve ever finished and published online. It was inspired by an RP that I am currently involved in and they are my favorite couple in said RP. It got so much positive feedback after I shared it that it inspired me to keep writing. I was so nervous about posting it, but I am glad I did.Ā
Most underrated fic you have written: Oh Iām not sure. Maybe Love Bites. I am a sucker for Supernatural and The Vampire Diaries crossovers. I really loved writing this fic and am eager to write more.Ā
Story of yours that youād most like to see turned into a movie/tv show: Oh damn, um, itād be cool to see any of them like that. But maybe Sweet Cherry Pie or Out of the Fire (my firefighter!Dean series).Ā Ā
Favorite Tumblr Writer(s): There are so many, but I usually find myself reading work from; @impala-dreamerā, @katehuntingtonāĀ Ā @deanwanddamonsā, @muchamusedaboutnothingā.Ā Ā
Favorite Fic from another writer: This one is tough because there are so many amazing fics out there, especially ones that I adddddore; but if forced to choose, one story that will always stick with me would have to be Treacherous by @idkhaylijahā OR The Sullivan Series by Kate HuntingtonĀ
Favorite character to write: Dean Winchester. I adore Dean and heās probably the easiest for me to write. I have written the most fics with him and I portray him often in the RPs that I do.Ā
Favorite Pairing to write: Dean with anyone, but my favorite would be Dean x Caroline.Ā
Least favorite character to write (and why): Thatās a tough one, cause thereās not really any that Iām uncomfortable with or dislike writing. Maybe characters with accents, because I donāt really know how to capture that in writing yet? Iām pretty open with my writing and am willing to try mostly anything.Ā
Do you have anyone you consider a mentor? Oh definitely. When I first started RPing, there was another girl (Jocelyn) that I used to write with and she influenced a lot of my writing. She was older than me and had more experience and gave me a lot of tips on how to get better. She is an amazing writer and had the potential of going far with it, but life happens and unfortunately, she doesnāt write anymore. But she is booming on Youtube, so thatās pretty impressive. Itās pretty cool to see how far sheās come.Ā
Do you have any aspirations involving your writing? I used to want to be a journalist when I was younger, but other than that, not really. I just want to have fun with it and write something meaningful for someone, and always improve and get better.Ā Ā
How many work-in-progress stories do you have: I have a few ideas jotted down, maybe ten, but I havenāt actually started any of them. I have so many bingo cards I need to finish, but with my work schedule, itās been pretty crazy.Ā
What are you currently working on? My main project is Out of the Fire.
āPond Divingā - All About The Writing
What/who has had the biggest influence on your writing? Definitely the RPing that Iāve done and am currently doing. My friend Alesha has been the longest RP partner that Iāve had and her writing is phenomenal - and it helps a lot too when your mind's work in similar ways; her and I always seem to be on the same wavelength when it comes to writing. I love it. But like me, she has a very busy schedule and writing is limited.Ā
Best writing advice you've been given: Have fun with it, write what you want to write and always be open to helpful criticism. And donāt stress about it, either. Write in your own time. Itās meant to be fun, not stressful.Ā
Biggest obstacle youāve faced in your writing: Just finding the time to write and getting over being so self conscious about my writing. I donāt let anyone in my real life read what I write.Ā Ā
What aspects of writing do you find difficult when you write fanfiction? Just capturing the personalities of the canon characters sometimes; if itās a character Iām not used to writing, I worry about portraying them the right way. And I have trouble individualizing the characters (separating them from myself/my own personality), like when I create an OC for an RP, sometimes when I have too many, their personalities all become the same in ways (if that makes sense?). And accents. I have trouble with accents. Oh, and fight/action scenes. They take me a bit.Ā Ā
Is there anything you want to write but are afraid to (and why): I am always going to be afraid, no matter what it is that Iām writing, because I worry about it succeeding. I want to write for other fandoms though, I guess, but like I said, I worry about capturing the characters right and having a decent storyline that is unique.Ā
What inspires/motivates you to write: Honestly, positive feedback. I love hearing what people think about my writing and it motivates me to continue.Ā
How do you deal with self-doubt: Thatās a tough one. I guess I just look towards my writing friends or betaās for reassurance or I go back and read the positive comments and likes on the fics Iāve already shared. It encourages me to continue.Ā
How do you deal with writer's block: I usually listen to music and Iāll look up gifs of my favorite characters, create stories in my head with those gifs or Iāll create gif sets of specific scenes. If that doesnāt work, Iāll take a break and watch one of my favorite TV shows for inspiration.Ā
Do you plan/outline your story before you start: For my RPs, I have a group chat with those Iām writing with and we usually shoot ideas back and forth, but mostly we wing it. For my fics, I normally just wing it, but with Out of the Fire, I have a rough idea of what I want from each part. With that said, my ideas or plans often change as Iām writing. These characters have a mind of their own sometimes. Lol.Ā Ā
Do you have any weird writing habits: I donāt know about any weird habits, but I always have music on and I guess I have to do it in spurts. Iāll write a few paragraphs or sentences, pause and scroll tumblr or facebook or gifs, and then go back, reread what I wrote and then write a few more. Rise and repeat.Ā
Have you ever received hateful comments on your fic and how do you deal with it? So far, no I havenāt, and I hope I donāt ever have to deal with that. But I know itās bound to happen. I guess if I were to ever encounter that, Iād like to say that Iāll take it as a learning experience but I honestly donāt know Iād feel about that.Ā Ā
Conversely: whatās been some of your favorite feedback on your fanfic? Oh man, I guess my favorite would have to be ellewritesfix05 reaction to the secret santa fic I wrote for her; Dean Fucking Winchester. And all the positive feedback Iāve gotten for Out of the Fire.
If you could give one piece of advice to a new and/or struggling writer, what would it be?Ā Have fun with it. Write what you want and what youāre comfortable with. Donāt be afraid of constructive criticism and most importantly, donāt stress. Writing is fun.

More Last Holiday Musings...
I want to poke at that interdimensional geoscope a little more, because upon reading it over again, I think I splashed it up a little fast and there are a couple of points Iād like to be clearer about. I meant to queue this up to post last night but also want it to be up before Gimme Shelter so ĀÆ\_(ć)_/ĀÆĀ
This is more blue curtains lit crit with a dash of folklore and an honorable mention for post-structuralism. And weāre talking about Supernatural after all, so this is sort of... well, itās about endings.
Last Holiday was not a typical āfillerā or even a typical MOTW episode. It felt extremely insular, possibly more so than any other episode I can think at any other point in the series. As opposed to the usual crowd of ālocals,ā a spate of victims, and a couple of red herring suspects, the only other people in this ep besides the Winchesters (including Jack) and Mrs. Butters were the two vampires and Cuthbert Sinclair. There was no ācaseā as in a usual MOTW-- there was no Chuck Struggle, either, and the lack of mytharc was strange against the lack of āfillerā schema. That lack of āMOTW investigationā marked this episode also as being about ācuriosityā-- the Winchesters all-too-quickly took Mrs. Butters for granted-- Dean even dismissed her as a āMagic Roombaā and that seemed to settle the matter. Furthermore, the moment that Dean spotted Mrs. B in his room, the stage was set for Antics ⢠when she held up his goofy Scooby boxers, and indeed a zaniness, an almost manic energy drove the action forward at a breakneck pace. [Spoiler alert, we do get āinvestigationā in the next episode, 15x15 Gimme Shelter, as stills and the preview show that Castiel and Jack will be teaming up together, in yet another shake-up of the usual āMOTWā template, almost like we can expect the other side of a coin when Sam and Dean switch places with Cas...] These features set Last Holiday apart as not so much āfillerā as ābetween,ā as in there was struggle before, and there will be struggle after, but for a while there was cake. (Contrast this to the usualĀ āperil of the thresholdā that usually shrouds liminality if youād like.)
At the end of Last Holiday, however, we finally get to find out what that old blue telescope really is, and with that name we get confirmation that there are no more alternate universes-- Chuck has burned them all. Viewers are left to come to the conclusion that in retrospect the telescope-thing could have changed the course of season 13 completely. The reveal is played off as darkly funny, but itās also kind of a gut-wrenching moment, too. All the heartbreak of the last two and a half years, reviewed now through the lens of āif only.ā If only theyād known about Mrs. Butters from the time they found the bunker, ānone of this would have happenedā⦠theyād have had monster radar, theyād have had the geoscope, they would have had supernatural help of a completely different level.
The temptation to read Last Holiday as a Chuck-free episode is strong, but fraught-- the threat of Chuckās involvement has been established by a pattern this season (well the pattern is woven throughout the whole series really but Dabb has deliberately structured these last three seasons with an exponentially increasing frequency.) I feel like weāve been conditioned this season in particular to hold ourselves in a perpetual flinch, to be afraid of what weāll learn āin retrospect.ā That geoscope was really_good_subtext, and it is entirely possible, even encouraged, at this point in the plot to take information weāve learned from the naming of the object, examine our own conditioned response to this episode, and apply both things to the structure of the season so far and make a prediction as to what might happen in the main plot. Thatās what I mean about subtext getting loud. Weāve been given the green-light to make a prediction about The Struggle and march forward with it, and see if we will be correct by extrapolating the pattern, or if that expectation will be subverted (the twist is set up to run either way, so either outcome is satisfying.) It is Melville-esque architecture of the highest degree;I could write another thousand words just about that. So I have a prediction that Iām hanging on to, because of what weāve learned from the geoscope, and what kinds of clues were hung up in Last Holiday, and Iām super excited to either have my hunch confirmed or be frightfully and delightedly surprised. I mean, where the fuck did Jeremy Adams even come from? Heās like our own Mrs. Butters, showing up in the last quarter to run a couple game-changing balls into the end zone, itās bonkers. I mean, I know writing mysteries is hard and requires still AND cunning, but damn, son.
But anyway, back to the geoscopeā¦Ā
Iām perplexed, from a very ālit critā perspective, but this is where Iām at and why I referenced blue curtains-- if you shine too bright a light on subtext, does it evaporate-- like looking through an interdimensional geoscope and not seeing anything-- or is āsubtextā sometimes not some ephemeral fever-dream that we as viewers conjure up through our experiential interlocution with the text but something a writer has steeped into the narrative as part of their craft? Or when youāre talking about an evolving iteration of writers, is it possible that one picks up a thread that another wove in for something else, repurposing or amplifying it? And, when perhaps is something deliberately instilled in the text in order to become ātextā at just the right time? In Moby Dick, [spoiler alert lol] Quequegās coffin-- formerly one of many symbolic vehicles used to foreshadow the doom of the Pequod-- is repurposed as a life buoy and becomes the actual object that saves Ishmaelās life, transforming it from a portent of disaster to a symbol of salvation and then to one of Ishmaelās guilt for surviving Ahabās madness-- the guilt that had been made text by the very opening line of the book, āCall me Ishmael.ā In retrospect, the connotations of wandering, exile and salvation behind the name that the narrator gives himself become crystal clear. The problem that the post-structuralist model of āreadingā as simultaneously ācreating the textā has manufactured is that the idea that āsubtextā can often be discounted as something dreamed up wholecloth by the reader, and thus inferior, imaginary, even delusional (and I use that last word knowing what a loaded term that is in the spn fandom, but this is not about a ship, even) where once it was considered to be a valid and measurable part of the text itself, like that dang coffin. It was the basement, the underpinnings, the catacombs below the opera house sure, but it helped to hold up the structure. And for some reason, putting subtext into a piece of media has become passe, or cringe? Anyway, not to be bitter on main but it didnāt used to be this way, at least not in the heady early days of postmodernism. So that green light? Critical hit against blue curtains. And while yes, some readings are going to be better supported than others, and the wild variety of checklists in this fandom mean that some conclusions have been drawn which canāt pan out, if youāre paying attention to the structure, the subtexts, the alchemical/psychoanalytical/postmodern themata, the ending will be very satisfying.Ā
So. What was once speculated to be a symbol for emotional lows or turning points (among other things) in the bunker was textually hit with a bright green light, then Dean got curious about it in text, and we were told-- in text-- that oh itās just a fancy spyglass, and now that the other worlds are gone, it has no purposeā¦. thatās what I mean about the geoscope now being āpureā-- it wasnāt clear whether the telescope ever had any function, subtetxtual or not, and now that itās certain what itās āfunctionā was, itās now freed up as a āsymbolā-- unless like in Moby Dick itās new āpurposeā is revealed later, but right now itās caught in this liminal place of not-quite-clue and not-quite-metaphor...Ā
However, and I didnāt put this in my first post because I was trying to be fast and not a wet blanket, but I felt like finally naming the geoscope was an ending.Ā
This is literally Singer, Dabb, and Co tidying up the house before locking it behind them.
I think when Dean said he didnāt see anything through the ātelescope thing,ā that weāre to understand that maybe this was the last hurrah of the cute, zany, campy āsubtextā or even āmetatextā if youād rather that so many of us have been parsing and which has gotten so weird and bright since season 12/13. I think I said in one of the folklore posts that writing about some of the things I write about feels like making daisy chains in the endzone during the big game. Which is fun, thatās how I personally got through having to be in AYSO soccer for four years, by looking for four leafed clovers and eating orange quarters. And we got a wood nymph in this episode, textually even, so I could easily check the āfolkloreā box on this one. But the sheer euphoria of Last Holiday and all the sparkles it brought into the story arenāt meant to last. When you look back on fifteen years of text, a lot of it is bleak, miserable stuff. Thatās not to say that episodes like Yellow Fever and Hunteri Heroici and Fan Fiction et al shouldnāt be celebrated. But I think from here on out, things are going to be less āgolly gee, three birthdays!ā and more āThere she blows! --there she blows! A hump like a snowhill!ā
This episode was a gift in many ways, not just for the sense of glee it transmitted-- it also did so much work and there are things I want to yell about in the way language was hit, the red versus green lighting, the way the backwards holidays worked, the projector as a metaphor for Mrs. B projecting her regrets and fears onto Jack, the amount of food that was created and consumed, how that smoothie was also an echo of āfairy foodā or an underworld pact if you squint-- but the stakes are so high now. We havenāt been shown the next valley-- there was no final scene of Chuck rubbing his hands together like the villain from a melodrama, for example-- but the last image we got was Jack blowing out a candle. After the candle is blown out, the cake is dismantled and consumed. Once the story is over, all the themes that are so hard to grapple in a text like a television show can be gathered up and analyzed. (IS that all, though? After all, Dean made his own cake later, which, like, echoes of the āoh two cakesā comic lol...)
Since I really never want to leave anything I toss out on this blog on a last note of doom and gloom, however, I do want to say that I too understand what that last image meant. It meant, as Sam said, make a wish. Think of the future, think of free will, and hope for something wonderful to happen. (or do like me and wonder what the hell Jack wished for with dread and anticipation ha ha ha.)

How would you have written damons character as an antagonist, in a way that is believable for elena to fall for him? Or do you have any examples of shows that have done thaf dynamic well?
OK well first of all, the main thing, like Iāve always said, is that Damon canāt do what he did to her friends and family. Itās too much.
He rapes Caroline
He tries to kill her
twice
actually, no, three times
He tries to kill Bonnie
Heās responsible for Vicki
Turns out that heās the one who killed and turned her birth mother and theyāve had sex
He kills Jeremy
Not to mention that he got Jenna stabbed
Like he causes too much carnage to Elenaās circle specifically that her falling for him in any capacity doesnāt make sense unless Elena is actually just a terrible friend and sister.
Eric doesnāt even do this much damage to Sookieās circle, the most he does to her friends is chain Lafayette in his basement and then feed on him, which actually has context because Lafayette was selling vampire blood and thatās a grave offence among vampires.
So thatās the first thing that Iād have to change.
The second is that he has to have a story that is actually sympathetic and not just, I fell in love with a woman who told me specifically that sheās interested in me because I love her more than she loves me
because thatās stupid. I have so many different posts about this but in 1864, I wouldāve made Damon a pillar of the community with a wife and kids because at that age he wouldāve had a family and then Katherine comes and completely torpedoes his life, she promises him an eternity of them together and swears that her being with Stefan is just to use him, she actually seduces him and perhaps compels him and has him so wrapped up in her that he abandons his family and his wife finds out that Katherineās a vampire and tries to out her but Katherine convinces him to put her in an asylum, like actually have Katherine be malicious in how she deals with him and have Damon do all this terrible shit, only for his father and the townspeople who he had once considered his community turn on him and kill him and he canāt see his kids again and heās destroyed his wifeās life and he carries that guilt and that anger for over a century, just biding his time for the comet to get Katherine out because she promised him eternity only to find out that she wasnāt in the tomb, she knew where he was and she didnāt care, and she always loved Stefan and then just have him completely break. That kind of storyline doesnāt paint him in the best light but with the right acting and the right script and the right dialogue and the right chemistry, it makes him sympathetic and his hatred of Katherine and his hatred of the town is rooted in something real. So if Elena is going to feel any sense of sympathy toward him, with that kind of storyline I can understand it. And I could see her helping him realize that the people who live in the town now donāt deserve to die so when he has that whole āI came to this town wanting to destroy it but I found myself trying to save itā, itās earned.
In terms of Elena āfallingā for Damon, I have always said there are various ways this couldāve been done. Like actually make them a dark relationship:
If Elena becomes a vampire and thatās supposed to be a game-changer then she has to change internally. I would want Elena to feel constrained by Stefan and have a reason for it, like if Stefan is all about here is how you control your urges, here is how you appear as human as possible, then I would want Elena to realize that sheās actually curious about losing control, curious about the blood, curious about the freedom of vampirism and Damon gives her that.
The show thinks it did that but it didnāt because Stefan did everything right. He taught her how to hunt, how to defend herself, he stimulated her sexually, he took her to parties so she could learn how to socialize while being oversensitive, he provided opportunities like the motorcycle so she could relish the power of vampirism and he looked for the cure secretly, he consistently told her she would make it through this period, he even celebrates her being alive with champagne, like Stefan was actually perfect, the ONE thing he couldnāt do was teach her how to feed on humans, that isnāt enough of a chasm. And Elena constantly said how she didnāt want this life. If Elena didnāt actually say any of that and did things like, Maybe I should learn how to feed on humans and he shut her down, or if she compelled someone and he was like Elena, I know itās tempting but you need to not do that and she just felt stifled then I could see why she would go to Damon.
Then when sheās with Damon, he encourages all of her worst impulses. She no longer looks at her friends as friends but as food and itās not something that Damon helps her navigate because sheās a vampire and this is how vampires feel, they feed together, they drink like crazy together, they drive like maniacs together, she leaves school because fuck it, she has eternity, why does she need to be confined by human rules anymore
Another thing I said I would do is I could see the triangle being like Will/Elizabeth/Jack in PotC:
Elizabeth was attracted to Jack and I think thatās fair because heās attractive and because he did everything she wanted in that he followed his impulses, he was outside the law, outside societal constructions, he did what he did because he wanted to do it and yet she knew he also had morality in him. So it was this tension of sexual curiosity and the belief that he could be redeemed. And Jack plays on her sexual curiosity, there is a ton of innuendo, a lot of flirting and when it really counts he proves her right in being a āgood manā but thatās also directly related to Will, helping Will, saving Will, trusting Will and while Will believes she loves Jack for like half of POTC At Worldās End, Jack and Elizabeth both know itās always Will. Thereās no question. And I think that couldāve been Delena. I think Elena could be curious about Damon and attracted to Damon and I think he could play on that because heās Damon but when it comes down to it, for both of them, itās about Stefan.
Jack works because heās not bound by romance, his love is intangible, itās the sea, itās itās the Black Pearl, itās being a captain, Ā itās his crew, itās the components that construct what freedom is to him and I wouldāve given Damon something like that, unconcerned with earthly preoccupations like love particularly since heās a vampire and immortal and I think that wouldāve been very interesting with Elena being there as a sort of reminder that earthly preoccupations arenāt always a waste of time, like a good bond thatās in between friendship and romance but never crosses over to either. So I could see that happening.
I have also said that I could see Elena being attracted to the idea of Damon, the way the Delena fandom is attracted to and romanticizes the idea of Damon where, like, a part of her that she really hates --- and we see that she hates it --- we get a Buffy-esque breakdown like this
likes the fact that heād let everyone die to save her, is flattered by the fact that when she says something to hurt him, he spirals out of control, misconstrues his toxic behaviour as intense love and finds herself curious about him because he comes on strong all the time, so she wonders if being with him would be passionate and consuming, have her romanticize the idea of a consuming relationship only for them to get together and realize how unbelievably awful it is to be in that relationship where every time they fight and he storms out, she calls her friends to make sure theyāre safe and tell them to avoid Damon at all costs because heās on edge, have her feel the guilt of knowing a fight between them caused an innocent to die etc.

You almost mentioned Cullen as the best written character, but tbh he is written quite bad, his abuse and hate is never confronted in Inquisition and he is made victim by narrative, while he was the very problem why Chantry sucks. Even his fans admit that. He is mostly liked because of romance.
Ugh.
I was waiting for that moment when admitting I like Cullenās character and story arc will bite me in the ass.
TL; DR (for those who donāt want to get through my long rant)Ā
Let everyone enjoy any characters/romances/game choices they want. I have my reasons for having Cullen as a fav DA character and liking his story arc and I donāt think there are more problems with writing of his character than the majority of other companions in DA games.Ā
Full answer below
First of all ā I donāt want to argue that everyone should like or dislike the same elements of fiction as I do ā it would be stupid. We all have different tastes, like different character archetypes and have varying opinions on what makes a good story. Iām trying to keep my blog character positive and unless someone asks me directly to share my opinion on a certain character or plot element I prefer keeping my critique to myself. I also donāt feel entitled to confront fans who, in their own posts, state they find Cullen boring, unredeemable or overrated, even if I personally disagree with all these statements.Ā
If your ask, anon, stated the words āi thinkā or āin my opinionā I wouldnāt probably bother with such a lengthy answer, HOWEVER, you write your personal opinion like it was an objective statement, like you were in position to tell me how I should view the certain character. What did you expect, that I would suddenly realize āoh crap, NOW I see that a character and plot I had liked for my 200 hours of gameplay is actually bad, I was just too stupid to notice it!ā.
Haha, no.
So, letās go through your comment.
ātbh he is written quite badā
In. Your. Opinion. There are people who donāt like Cullenās character development. Some like the general idea but would make some changes if they could. Others (like me) donāt have problem with his story arc and just like to add some headcanons to fill the gaps.
It is understandable that when years pass between games, fans have time to develop their opinions and wishes of what theyād like to see. And because none of them actually writes the story it is very easy to feel disappointed and say āwell, I would do it better (= my way)ā. But the truth is - your way is not necessary a better way. It may be the case that āyour versionā would be even more hated by the fandom. Some opinions are just more popular than others and therefore may seem like they are objective but itās an illusion. A well designed pool, with large sample size and good statistics may be objective. Opinions, on the other hand, are like farts ā you always think yours are less stinky than the othersā ĀÆ\_(ć)_/ĀÆ
But I digress.
Yes, I think Cullen is a well written character and yes, I like his story arc. Cullenās redemption works for me because I see it not as much about atonement for his actions as for his lack of action.
Let me explain.
Anti-Cullen fans tend to assume that he personally did a lot of atrocities, but when you look not at fandom assumptions but at his actual actions we see in games or WoT, you can see that he caused most evil by not doing shit.
He should have protected the mages.
He didnāt.
He should have questioned Meredithās actions.
He didnāt.
He should have noticed sheās going mad.
He didnāt .
He should have stopped her before she evoked the Rite.
He didnāt.
He was very passive and basically let either Meredith or Hawke make all the choices for him. If he let Meredith decide ā people died. If he listened to Hawke (based on playerās choices) he voted for whatever Hawke had proposed.
Why was he behaving like that? Probably because he had lost faith in his own judgment so he put all the responsibility on authority figures (Templar Order and Chantry teachings). Cullenās core motivation throughout all games was to protect people and it never changes. What changes is his belief of what methods are moral or necessary to achieve that goal and whether he, as an individual, should be in a position to decide it.
In Inquisition Cullen does the opposite. He is a workaholic. He makes his own decisions (leaves Kirkwall, stops taking lyrium) and takes full responsibility for them. He doesnāt follow his leader blindly but openly states his own opinions and advice (whether they are correct or wrong is another topic). He gets really furious when someone in position of power lie to or sacrifice people under their command (like in case of Samson or Rainier). Finally, he dedicates his life, health, skills, basically everything, for a cause - to stop the war that can be blamed mostly on his former organisation, without complaint or asking for forgiveness.
And I love that aspect of his character.
In Inquisition Cullen is still a work in progress. He tries his best but his templar past comes back sometimes - and itās good. If he was completely free of his biases, it would be damn unnatural.Ā
I would never say that Cullen is a flawless ray of sunshine. He can be stubborn, biased, narrow-minded, hypocritical, bitter, aggressive and vengeful. But guess what ā so can all the other characters. Thatās why they are interesting.
āhis abuse and hate is never confronted in Inquisitionā
It is, at least for the standards of this particular game. DA:I doesnāt have full developed friendship-rivalry mechanics like DA:2 and you canāt even get approval points from advisors. The Inquisitor basically has far less options to condemn the Inner Circleās actions or change their worldviews than Hawke (you donāt really argue with Dorian about slavery or with Iron Bull about Saarebas or Reeducators either).
But even if the Inquisitor has limited dialogue options to confront Cullenās actions directly, Cullen himself brings the topic to the player. Cullenās dialogue and actions in DA:I show that
he is ashamed of the person he became after Uldredās uprising Ā Ā
he knows he needs to atone for his actions and he wants to work for it
but doesnāt really believe he can fully atone for what he did
supports the reform of the Chantry, Templar Order and Circles rather than agreeing to their traditional methods
That man already hates himself, give him some rest.
And if you still think he needs an extra punishment for his crimes - Cullen is actually one of only 3 companions/advisors in DA:I whose life you can literally ruin through your choices (the other two being Blackwall and Iron Bull). If your Inky thinks that Cullenās actions are unredeemable and he deserves nothing better than to forever be chained to the templar life he has chosen as a kid - they can order him to take lyrium again. For me itās a heartless and morally wrong choice, but anyone can play their game however they want.
āhe is made victim by narrativeā
Ok, that part really bothers me. Are you saying that it is a bad thing that a narrative treats a person who has been physically, mentally and sexually abused for weeks as a victim of that abuse? Or encourages empathy towards a character fed drugs, manipulation and propaganda? Acknowledging Cullenās PTSD doesnāt automatically result in ignoring or diminishing traumas and abuse that happened to Anders, Carl or any other character. Empathy doesnāt have to be reserved to people you personally agree with, just saying.
āhe was the very problem why Chantry sucks.ā
Iād say he was an example showing why Chantry sucks. A symptome, not a cause. Chantry benefits only high ranking members of that intitution + some nobles and rich dudes. Mages are abused and denied most of the rights because of the Chantry. Templars are drugged and brainwashed because of the Chantry. Common folk canāt freely benefit from things like healing magic because of the Chantry. Non-humans are treated like heretics and barbarians - because of the Chantry. The Chantry, as we see at the beginning of DA:I is a corrupt, powerful institution that has forsaken almost all ideals it had been built upon and desperately needs a reform. Everyone can see that. I have NEVER met any fan who said āyeah, Circles, Templar Order, the Chantry ā they were perfectly alright, no need to change lolā. Same goes to characters labelled by fandom as pro-Chantry (like Cassandra, Cullen or Vivienne). They all see that major changes must be done, they just believe the reformation is better than abolition.
āEven his fans admit that.ā
Some, yes. Others donāt have a problem with his arc. Personally I donāt think there are many Cullen fans that would agree with every single point you made.
āHe is mostly liked because of romance.ā
Um, no. The reason why the game developers even bothered with making Cullen a romance option in DA:I is that he was already quite liked and popular among fans, despite being just a secondary character. Iād agree that the romance plot made Cullen even more popular, especially among players who didnāt play previous games, but it is wrong to assume that the only reason people enjoy his character is because heās a pretty boy. I played the games in order and Cullen was one of my fav characters in DA2 - I just like paragon anti-villains with redemption potential. Fight me.Ā
To conclude this overly long rant - Iām generally under impression that some DA fans tend to point certain aspects of Cullenās character and story as āstupid excuses made by Bioware and fans to redeem a son of the bitchā and then use almost exactly the same arguments to defend their own favs. Itās the topic for maybe another discussion, but I think itās a good thing to confront your own biases sometimes.
P.S. I also recommend watching this video about writing redemption arcs. Just for fun.
I rest my case.Ā
(thanks, Ania, for the high quality picture to sum up my feelings)

What went wrong with Classic Sonicās music in Sonic Forces? (ft. beevean)
The following is a project Iāve been cooking for some weeks, trying to find out some reasons behind the general lackluster feeling that surrounds Classic Sonicās music in Sonic Forces. As you may have spotted already, this is not a solo project, since Iāve had the opportunity to talk about this very same topic with @beevean and she raised quite a couple of interesting points that Iām going to bring up as we go through.Ā
Also, Spanish speakers: you can catch the Spanish version of this post here, itās probably a more polished experience with additional text.
Long post below, so, bring up a ladder and a boombox, Iāll explain along the way. (thereās also a tl;dr at the bottom if you are that type of person)
Sonic Forces stands as a divisive point in the Sonic fandom, that much we all know, and we are not going to discuss the gameās general quality at all on this post. But we are going to take a solid look at Classic Sonic and, most importantly, its music, since I consider thatās the most clear symptom of a bigger problem with Classic Sonic in general, in this post-Generations Modern Sonic world.
A quick look at Classic Sonic
When Classic Sonic debuted in Sonic Generations (2011) as this new-but-also-old Sonic, gaming as a whole was still being bombarded with this āretro-revival movementā that brought back many classic franchises (like classic Mega Man with MM9 and 10 after a decade since MM8), and SEGA itself was in the middle of that train with the recently released Sonic 4: Episode 1 (2010). While Sonic 4 tried to marry Sonicās current style with classic level tropes and even Genesis-inspired music in a seamless way (showing Sonicās physical transition from his Sonic 3 days to Sonic Adventure as a smooth one), this newĀ āClassic Sonicā guy in Generations suffered from a mixed message about his origins: is he Sonic from the past, from an alternate universe, or both? Is his music supposed to sound like arrangements of his classic 16-bits tunes or just modern-sounding remixes like the rest of the soundtrack? The fandom still debates about it to this day.
This all led to the introduction of a character that, although considered aĀ āSonicā like the other āModernā one, could not establish his own identity beyond Generationsā anniversary-title plot threads. No unique music style, no unique traits, he was just a simpler Sonic.
Major manifestation of the Classic problem.
Fast-forward some years to November 2017, Sonic Forcesā release date. Besides gameplay, story and character criticisms, the music of Forces turned out to be quite controversial for a part of the fandom. Although I personally consider the Avatar songs as top-tier Sonic music, I share similar concerns as the rest about the rest of the gameās music, specially the Classic Sonic level themes.Ā
With Forces, it seems the composers managed to solve some of Gensā Classic Sonic music problems, as this time there was a better and more consistent attempt at making Classicās music sound more at home with the āGenesis daysā tunes, but even then the composers fell into other traps that ended up being more damaging to the final product.
Years later after the gameās release, I finally brought up this very same topic during a conversation with beeveanĀ (I encourage you that, if you find the following snippets interesting, read the entire conversation), and she had the following thoughts to share as to why Classic Sonicās music was so... underwhelming:
the classic music in forces is the weakest part of the ost, some tracks are okay while others suck, and the main reason for this is that they hired the wrong people for the job
Okay, that wasnāt a fair cut on my part. She talks a lot more about each and every aspect behind the music, and about the people that composed it, she had the following to say:
Okay, about Forcesā music. First of all, the Classic tracks were handled by two people: Tomoya Ohtani, who also composed pretty much 90% of the OST and has been working solo since 2013 (relevant later), and Naofumi Hataya, one of the two geniuses behind Sonic 2 8-bitās and Sonic CDās OSTs (plus some miscellaneous work in Heroes, Colors, Generations, etc.). If you loved tracks like Sky High, Palmtree Panic or Stardust Speedway, you have to thank him.
This is already a reason as to why the Classic music in Forces doesnāt resemble the music in the Genesis games. While I can understand that it would have been impossible to hire Masato Nakamura again, Jun Senoue would have been good for the job, having composed music for Sonic 3 and most importantly Sonic 3D Blast. But apparently Senoue was MIA until 2019, so who knows.
Iād like to point out that Naofumi Hatayaās involvement will play a bigger role later in this post, as we keep searching for what went wrong and we look for a potential solution when adressing Classic Sonic.
Beevean continued with:
There are mainly two problems here:
1) some of the tracks just donāt fit their stage. I already mentioned that Ghost Town sounds way too happy for a city under attack by giant robots. Death Prison sounds vaguely Egyptian and the difference with the original, bass-heavy composition is staggering. Chemical Flow is the most generic thing and would fit everything and nothing, and again comparing it with the original iconic track is just sad. I think the reason Casino Forest and Iron Fortress are my favorite Classic tracks is that they go very well with their respective stages. This is a problem Adventure 2 had as well, associating a particular style to a particular character, and while I think Forces did it better, for me the priority should be fitting a level.
2) Ohtani was once a very versatile composer (the guy could go in one game from Wave Ocean to Crisis City, for example), but since Lost World, the first game in which he had the responsibility of an entire soundtrack, his style quickly became āanimeā. Runnersā tracks? āThis sounds like an anime opening!ā. How do you recognize his only track in TSR? Itās the one that sounds like an anime opening and uses a synth.
And look, I love Ohtani, he has nothing but my respect, and he made some of my absolute favorite tracks in the series. But I do think theyāre making him work too much - heās the best when he can work with at least another person, and has the chance to span a little. I also think his style is incompatible with the Classic music, which was never anime: even at its mellowest in Sonic 1 it always had a little jazzy/new jack swing touch. Basically the only thing they got right in this game is having a wicked bassline :P
It aināt *only* the composersā fault
Following beeveanās words, Iād like to add my own take on the problem. You see, I do agree that the composers maybe werenāt up to the task of nailing the classic Genesis tunesā vibe (Hataya got real close, though), but at the same time I do think they werenāt properly oriented or didnāt have enough time to keep reiterating on the frameworks they were working with. Like beevean said, some of the tracks improve quite a bit after leaving behind that mixed as hellĀ āalmost Genesis but not quiteā soundfont.
The composers will work on what they were told to make and I have a strong, albeith unconfirmed, feeling that the Classic Sonic composers where asked toĀ āmake it sound retroā by someone higher up on the project management chain, and after checking on their progress, simply saidĀ āmeh, itās retro enough, no one will noticeā.
TheĀ āmake it sound retroā argument, in my opinion, opens up a big discussion about Sonic music, because there is no easy way to make itĀ āretroā with Sonic. You just canāt pump out a few nostalgic chiptunes and call it a day. Sonic music may have originated back in the 16-bit days of the Sega Genesis, but his identity is so much more than just that Genesis FM sound. I personally believe, similar to another thing beevean point out, that Forces focused too much on sounding āretro enoughā instead of fitting each track better to each level theme or even tap into what really made Sonic appealing on the classic days.Ā
This last point is something that SEGA struggled a lot during the past decade, they introduced Classic Sonic as an entity separated from the current Sonic, yet they simply donāt give Classic Sonic enough development as itās own character. Heās there because heās there and we donāt know what to expect from him beyondĀ āhe represents the good old daysā. But not even SEGA itself knows what that means.
So, what really makes up Classic Sonicās identity?
For me this is the true heart of the post. Knowing full well what makes Classic Sonic should be the key to every project that features him.Ā
There are lots of points to make about Classic Sonicās identity and how to establish him should he return once again on a 3D Sonic title (not even using theĀ āmodernā anymore, and I personally wouldnāt like to see him again on a 3D title for another decade, if ever), but seeing as the main topic of this post has been music, Iām going to focus on what music style makes Classic Sonic shine.
I already said that throwing some generic chiptunes wonāt work, but I DO think that Genesis-inspired tunes can still work, should they stick to what made the classics so great.
And what is that? Well, you have several options here: you can choose from more J-Pop and jazzy tunes to some sick R&B and New Jack Swing beats, all the way through to late 80ā²s Acid House and wacky 90ā²s Dance music, even cinematic-like scores and ambient sounds.
Personally, I think the heavy R&B (with its fair share of New Jack Swing) influences are a constant throughout Sonicās first years, and that kind of sound is one that goes well with his cool attitudeā¢. Spring Yard Zone has always been referred to asĀ ā16-bit Every Little Stepā, while Sonic CD... well, and Sonic 3... well... JAM. Even Masaās demos of Sonic 2 feature some sick basses that arenāt all that different from what I was thinking (Chemical Plant and Metropolis come to mind).Ā Sonic CD (JP, also the work of Naofumi Hataya and Masafumi Ogata) in particular springs up to my mind as the purest representation on everything that Sonic was about on his old days, butĀ āpureā doesnāt necessarily mean ārefinedā, so I think the Sonic CD style coupled with some more smooth Pop for emotional momentsĀ (straight from Nakamuraās school of smoothness) and harder 90ā²s raves for boss fights (think how iconic Stardust Speedway Bad Future has become)Ā could make up the perfect blend for Classic Sonic to follow in terms of style points, but also considering the general themes of each zone (Wacky Workbench being this Dance-heavy zone was a stroke of genius if you ask me, the same with Spring Yard being a jazzy urbanscape.)
Sonic is a product of the late 80ā²s and 90ā²s pop culture, he has the moves of MC Hammer, Bobby Brown, and of course, Michael Jackson (also his shoes).Ā As such, no genericĀ āretro nostalgicā tune will fit with him, unlike many other gaming franchises. By embracing Classic Sonicās wacky nature gems like Sonic Mania happened, and just like I pointed it out to beevean, if you were there the week that game was first announced, you probably saw how much people were gushing about Studiopolis Act 1 sounding so much like Sonic CD with that funky beat. People instantly knew that was the Classic Sonic music they wanted to hear.
And just to make this section even better, I recently asked beevean about her thoughts on what makes Classic Sonicās music identity. I now urge you to go and read her full analysis because itās so deep yet very accessible, as Iāll be collecting just a few parts of her response for this post. Trust me, that post is so useful, go and reblog it now, Iāll wait here.
About Classic Sonicās music styles, beevean says:
So⦠which is the style that fits Classic Sonic better?
The big love letter to the Classic series that is Mania used CD as an inspiration, and while Maniaās OST is excellent and one of my favorites⦠I donāt automatically associate New Jazz Swing with Classic Sonic. Before Mania, it was only in one game, the odd one in the bunch too.
3D Blast is my favorite Genesis soundtrack, and as I said it combines the best of two worlds (plus itās just full of bangers), but it influenced the next era more than the Classic one. The same could be said for the American OST of CD - and besides, tracks like this are nothing like Sonic anyway.
Sonic 1 is the first one and all, but that mellow style fits that particular game more than Classic as a whole, I think the closest OST to this style was Advance 1, actually - another slow-paced, simple game.
So the choice is narrowed down to the ultra-popular Sonic 2 and the refined Sonic 3 & Knuckles. And Iāll be honest, while I think S3&K has higher āhighsā compared to S2⦠my brain immediately jumps to the latter. When I think of Classic Sonic, I think of Genesis brass (the real deal, not that fake synth they used in Forces), twang basses, a swingy rhythm (too many to choose lol), and tons of energy.
Only one Classic track in Forces came close to this description. The others sound more like either a pale imitation of Sonic 1 or modern tracks with a bad soundfont, and thatās when theyāre not a complete insult (no i wonāt link to it you know what iām talking about :V).
Authorās note: itās been, like, two months and she still refuses to talk about Faded Hills, lol
youtube
Authorās note: sorry, beev.
(TL;DR) Closing thoughts.
So, what did go wrong with Classic Sonicās music in Sonic Forces?
A lack of definition on what Classic Sonic even is about, carried from Generations, made the task of defining his style more difficult.
The composers werenāt up to the task, or they were simply asked to make Classic SonicĀ āsound retroā, generic sound be damned.Ā
This also means management of the project wasnāt that interested in the Classic portion, or they ran out of time to make it better. This is something that the entire game seemed to have a problem with as well.
The music didnāt fit the stages, and even if it did, Classicās identity was all over the place. He was there just to be there, and his music suffered from that (compare it to Mania).
Tomoya Ohtani (often credited as the maker of the arguably worst tracks of Classic Sonic in the game) has experienced a shift on his musical style over the last few years that led to his tracks start sounding very similar to each other, this, coupled with the fact he was working on the other 2/3rds of the gameās OST, caused his Classic tracks in particular to suffer.
Classic Sonicās tracks didnāt take from the 90ā²s Pop and R&B influences that plagued the old games, and as such, the current Classic Sonic doesnāt have an identity as strong as the original 90ā²s Sonic. Beeveanās take on this point involves Classic Sonic tracks that feature strong, legit Genesis brass, with twang basses, swingy rhythm and tons of energy.
Once again, Iād like to thank beevean for providing such insightful information and opinions (you can clearly see we both tend to have different takes on what made Sonic back in the 90ā²s, but in the end agreed to a similar set of requirements to make good Classic music, like basslines and lots of energy), which helped this post a lot more than you can imagine. I wanted to post this back in late January, but the extra time allowed me to keep thinking, searching and listening, while also opened the door to ask beev again about her opinions. This is probably the firstĀ ābigā article Iāve written this year, and I hope to return soon enough with more.Ā
#sonic the hedgehog#sonic music#welp that was a big post#during the last portion something else started picking my attention#the shift in cultural references for sonic starting with adventure#all the cool skater stuff and the like#i might look into that in the future#in the meantime i think my 'make it sound retro' argument could lead somewhere#because i'm sure ohtani and hataya could've made something way better#but something stood on their way#be it time or management i don't know#well that's it folks#thank you for reading

Challenge Yourself: A FFBF Artist Interview
Homestuck Tarot Acts 6 & 7 - Cards Illustrated: Ā Queen of Pentacles, Four of Wands, Page of Swords
Itās always fascinating to see how huge the Homestuck art community is all over the world - Where are you from?
Coastal California, born and raised
Weāre in love with the tarot deck! Can you tell us a little bit about how you became involved?
Aryll (who organized the event) posted about it in a Homestuck Art server I'm an admin for (the Homestuck Artists Discord Server) to help get the word out. I was one of many people who was excited by it. I'm incredibly impressed by her selections for the cards, every one was absolutely perfect. (Also she's an amazing artist, and the project is filled with incredible artists, and being able to work with them and get crits from them and see their process was also just incredibly fun and fulfilling.)
Tell us a little bit about the artwork you contributed to the deck ā how does the art tie in with the meaning behind the card?
Alright, this might take a bit, partially because I did three and partially because there's a lot in there. I'll try to get into what I can!
Queen of Pentacles: The Queen of Pentacles is a perfect fit for Jane and the Nanasprites. I drew Jane as the queen she is in Propsitian regalia, with a maternal Nanasprite on each side to offer guidance, resources, compassion and playful mischief. The cake Jane's holding with the pentacle frosting represents her material wealth, financial success and security. It hints at her business and creative talents but in a way that's entirely hers, without any crockercorp baggage tainting it. She holds it with an open hand, representing her willingness to share with family and friends. She's centered in the piece, emphasizing her stability. At her feet grow pumpkins, that are both a literal image of pumpkins she grew that (though she didn't know it) sustained Roxy and an entire city of Carapacians, as well as a metaphor for the life and sustenance she creates for those around her. The life symbol on her throne furthers these themes. Lil Seb represents caution (he's on guard, ready to protect his charge) with Jane's hand on his head representing her compassion and maternal affection. (Not to mention holding him back from causing too much mischief! The Queen of Pentacles knows how to keep her family in line) In the background, prospit shines in all its glory, a flourishing kingdom of gold. Skaia shines above, an entire universe waiting to be born, in part thanks to Jane's hand, but she's down to earth and her eyes are set forward, focused on the practical, there here and now. Jane is a great character. I love her and I loved drawing her.
Four of Wands: The Four of Wands depicts S: Unite, one of my all-time favorite flashes. The alpha kids come together in person for the first time ever in a series of shenanigans and time travel. I took some artistic license with the chains on the lanterns so they'd reflect the wands in the original card. Where in the original it evokes a Chuppah, here, homestucks lanterns represents the very life force and the interconnection of the alpha kids. At that very moment, Jake's kiss has caused Dirk's lantern to burst with life, spreading the light of that to all the other lanterns as well. There's also an echo of Dirk's heart symbol in Jake's lantern, and the light almost seems to pierce through Jake's heart. (A lot of this symbolism was in part inspired by some fantastic essays on DirkJake and the lantern scene in particular by RevolutionaryDeulist on tumblr, which I definitely recommend checking out! :3) I tried to keep a symmetry and sense of movement to the card. It's a card of happiness and reunions, that both follows and precedes a lot of hard work. It's everything coming together at one moment, and even if things might get hard again soon, for a while now pure joy. Dirk, Jake, Jane and Jake all see (or are about to see) each other for the first time in person, after what is probably the worst day of all of their lives and a lot of work. While it harmony, celebration, goals achieved and reunions and unions of all kinds, its also a transitory card and can even symbolize a breakdown in communication. (Something that the alpha kids, unfortunately, had plenty of problems with!) Dirk, Jane and Roxy are both acting and watching. There's more to it, but this is the most complicated of the three and I'm afraid the hardest for me to explain, and I seem to be repeating myself so I'm gonna stop now.
Page of Swords: The page of swords is a perfect Tavros card. He's energetic, passionate and creative. Tavros is waiting in the beginning, eager to begin this new project, and look what a beginning it is! An army of countless ghosts waits with him, inspired by his charisma and kindness rather than forced. It's about being ready and moving forward. And importantly, he's successful because he made the choice to do this on his own, ignoring the voices that told him he couldn't succeed and wasn't good enough. It's a card that encourages you to find the people who will nurture your ideas rather than those who bring you down. It also represents communication, which is what it took for him to gather up this army. The breath sign in the clouds is there for multiple reasons. Breath is, of course, Tavros' symbol, and also, the Page of Pentacles is a wind card. But within the Homestuck canon, breath also represents freedom and charisma and many of the aspects of this card. (Also, god rays are cool and fun to draw and make some neat lighting effects.) Like Tavros, of course, the card only represents the beginning. It represents gathering people and friends, and communicating with them, new ideas and the start of something great. But Tavros at this point understands himself well enough to know his own strength. He formed the army, but he isn't the one to take the lead, and he's okay with that.
How have you grown as an artist over the years and what has helped you grow?
Practice is great for improving, but more than that you need to challenge yourself, and you need things to inspire you to do so. I've been drawing since I was three, graduated with a BA in art, and been living off caricaturing for almost a decade. But I also felt like my art was stagnating, and the thing that inspired me most has actually been Homestuck. I actually only got into it recently, only a few years ago, but it's gotten me drawing for myself again for the first time in a long time, and the art discords have a lot of events that have been encouraging me to draw. So even the time I've started drawing homestuck my art has improved more then it had in a long time, and I've really had fun with it again for the first time. But the best way to improve is definitely to find the things your worst at, and study and draw it a lot. Bad at hands? Study a bunch of pictures of hands. Learn anatomy, skeletal and muscular structure. Trace hand photos, draw your own hands. Bad at backgrounds? Study landscapes, trees, perspective... etc. Trying to do different things and work with different styles is good too, things like palette challenges can be great for helping things stay fun and inspired. Sorry, I got a little rambly, and I guess its more a general list of things I learned then the things that sparked my own specific growth, but hopefully it's helpful!
Whatās your process? Where do you find inspiration?
I like changing things up. Sometimes I'll sketch thumbnails or even the base sketch on paper, then draw from there in photoshop. Sometimes I'll play with pure color or light and shadow and sort of carve out images. I like to play with art a lot, and how much prep I do varies depending on what I'm drawing; usually if its a commission or illustration with something more in mind I'll do more thumbnailing and have a more structured approach. Inspiration varies. Music can be great for it, Homestuck is hugely inspirational. Games, stories, movies, etc can also all be great. Also I love having themed events, or drawing gift art for people. (Bonus, I love making people happy so I find that particularly satisfying.)
What kind of impact has Homestuck had on your life and art?
It's become my favorite piece of media. I could (and have) gone on a multi page rant about why and everything I like about it. But in an attempt to be succinct, its an interesting complex story with great characters and the perfect balance of humor and serious moments. Seriously, I love every character. It's also, like I mentioned, got me drawing for myself again. I've been drawing much more and improved a lot thanks to Homestuck in the few years since I got into it. I owe a lot to it, and for all people speak bad of the fandom, I think there's much more good then bad, and try my best to be part of the former, trying to help it be a place of encouragement, growth and happiness for everyone involved. :3
What advice would you give to a younger you?
Oh man. There are so many answers I could give here. I'd encourage more introspection. There's a lot of things about myself it took me too long to discover, or things I did because I was following someone else's definitions of success. Teaching myself art with some of the fantastic resources available and focusing on my own goals could have spared me ridiculous amounts of student debt.

Donāt Let Your Clients Butcher These Three Exercises
āCan you meet with my dad? He canāt seem to resolve whatās wrong with his lower back.ā
My client, Sara, brought up her dadās struggles as I logged her numbers at the end of our training session.
āHeās been complaining of back pain for years,ā she continued. āHeās been to this trainer and that trainer, not to mention physical therapists and chiropractors, and he canāt seem to pinpoint the root cause. Nothing has stuck.ā
āWell, Iām not Gandalf,ā I said, with my customary evidence-based modesty, ābut Iād be happy to take a look and see if I can help.ā
In addition to not being a wizard, Iām not a physical therapist, a chiropractor, a massage therapist, or anyone else who can diagnose and/or treat musculoskeletal conditions.
But as a strength and conditioning coach, I can assess and audit movement. I can take into account a clientās health history, ability level, and goals, and then create a safe, effective, and time-efficient training program based on that information.
Iām also pretty good at calling out BS.
For example, in the last season of Game of Thrones, you remember when Jon Snow led that expedition north of the Wall to capture a wight? (For those unsullied by GoT fandom, a wight is a corpse thatās been reanimated by the White Walkers, who were themselves created by the Children of the Forest ⦠On second thought, letās just go with zombie. Itās a zombie.) Logistically, that trip wouldāve taken months to pull off. But they did it in one episode. Like it happened in a week or two.
Pfffffft, whatever.
More to the point of this prehab article, have you ever noticed that some personal trainers haphazardly toss āsimpleā exercises like dead bugs, bird dogs, and glute bridges into their clientsā programs? And that theyāll do it without explaining to their clients why those exercises are important? And, because they didnāt explain the purpose of the movements, they leave their clients with no idea how to do them correctly?
If youāre like me, you see this a lot. And each time you see it, you want to throw your face into a brick wall.

Back to Saraās Dad
We met a week later, and the conversation was ⦠interesting.
As we went through his health history, I listened to him describe just how long heād been dealing with his lower back pain, and how many health and fitness professionals heād worked with over the past two decades.
When it was my turn to talk, and we got around to specific exercises, I didnāt mention anything he hadnāt heard before.
āYeah, yeah, they all had me do glute bridges and dead bugs,ā he said. āI know how to do them.ā
āShow me.ā
And he did.
You know how a jaw drops in a cartoon? Yeah, that was me.
When I asked him to demonstrate his glute bridge and tell me where he felt it, he said his quadriceps, hamstrings, low back, and eyeballs. Everywhere except where he was supposed to feel it.
In all that time, and with all the money heād spent, heād never learned how to do a glute bridge in a way that allowed him to feel his glutes doing the work.
We all know that the glutes help protect the lower back. Conversely, when the glutes donāt function properlyāthat is, when they donāt act as the bodyās primary hip extensorāwhat picks up the slack?
The lower back.
And donāt even get me started on his bird dogs and dead bugs. If the imaginations of Stephen King and Mary Shelley had twins they wouldnāt have looked more nightmarish.
I was equal parts flabbergasted and pissed offāflabbergasted that heād been told the correct exercises to perform, and pissed off that no one had taken the time to teach him how to do the exercises correctly.
This isnāt an isolated event, either. I see it all the time. You probably do as well. Thereās a pandemic of incorrect form on corrective exercises. I think it happens for three reasons:
Many fitness professionals have no idea why these exercises are so commonly prescribed. A trainer who canāt explain the purpose canāt coach or cue them properly.
Trainers teach them incorrectly because they learn the exercises from YouTube or Instagram videos posted by people doing them incorrectly.
The general public is the final link in this chain of bad training advice. When good intentions meet bad instructions, the result is a lot of people flailing around on the floor with no idea what theyāre trying to accomplish.
So letās look at each exercise in more detail.

How toĀ ProperlyĀ Coach the Dead Bug Exercise
The dead bug is one of my favorite core-training exercises, and a splendid choice to improve motor control and spinal stability. Theyāre superb at enhancing lumbo-pelvic control while training individuals to āoffset,ā or resist, external forces, like the movement of their extremities.
Theyāre also a potent corrective exercise for an overextended posture or excessive anterior pelvic tilt, something thatās fairly common among athletes, and that weāre seeing more and more in general population clients.
The key word there is āexcessive.ā Anterior pelvic tilt isnāt bad or dysfunctional. The lumbar spine is designed to be in this position. But someone whoās in excessive anterior pelvic tilt will almost always have extension-based back pain. It puts an ungodly amount of stress on structures like the facet joints and posterior discs, which, down the road, can manifest into spondylosis (spinal arthritis) or even a more profound issue like spondylolysis (end plate fracture).
Mike Robertson has a cool term for this: flawed active stability. In an effort to gain stability, youāre effectively crushing the spine by cueing the body to engage the paraspinals and spinal erectors.
Itās not uncommon for people with excessive anterior pelvic tilt to experience chronic pulled hamstrings, anterior knee pain, hip pain, and a myriad of other issues.
Dead bugs are a fantastic way to encourage more posterior pelvic tilt, while simultaneously enhancing motor control and engaging the lumbo-pelvic-hip stabilizers to do their job.

How toĀ ProperlyĀ Coach the BirdĀ Dog Exercise
Popularized by Dr. Stuart McGill, the bird dog is a staple for spine hygiene, targeting both the lower back and hip extensors. It also, and more importantly, teaches the discipline of using proper hip and shoulder motionĀ while maintaining a stable spine.
The bird dog is also one of the most butchered exercises on Earth.
Here are two examples, about a year apart, of women I worked with at CORE who came to me with lower-back issues:

EXAMPLE TWO

Each had worked with a different trainer before coming to me. To be clear, Iām not calling those trainers out. My point is to show how easy it is to mess it up.
On the one hand, the seeming simplicity of the bird dog leads to lackadaisical execution. If clients think the only goal is to extend the contralateral arm and leg, thatās what theyāll do, with no focus on maintaining a stable spine. Itās just out and back for however many times the trainer tells them to do it.
On the other hand, a client whoās trying too hard to do it right will look like my clients in these two videos. Sheāll go into excessive spinal extension in order to get a full range of motion. For someone with extension intolerance, doing the bird dog the way she thinks sheās supposed to will feed the very same lower back symptoms sheās trying to alleviate.

How to Properly Coach the Glute Bridge Exercise
Thereās no need to overcomplicate things here. Most of what you need to know about the glute bridge is right there in its name.
You lie on your back with your feet flat on the floor and knees bent roughly 90 degrees. Lift your hips until your body forms a straight line from chest to knees. Yelling āthis ⦠is ⦠Sparta!ā every rep is optional.
As explained earlier, and as you knew long before I explained it, the goal is to target the glutes with a movement theyāre designed to do: hip extension. If your client can only complete the movement with excessive lumbar extension, or feels it in the hamstrings and quads instead of the glutes, then something is clearly wrong.
But figuring out exactly how and why the client is getting it wrong isnāt always straightforward. This is a case where everyone is, indeed, a special snowflake. Once you take into account all the possible combinations of bone length, pelvis shape, hip-socket orientation, muscle lengths, and adaptive characteristics caused by activity (or lack thereof), the variety is infinite.
A few specific considerations:
Do they feel it in their lower back or hamstrings?
Slow them down, and reiterate that this is a glute exercise, not a āsee how fast you can finish your repsā exercise.
Do they feel it in their quadriceps?
The problem may be that theyāre pushing through their toes. Teach them to push their heels into the floor.
Do they make those changes and still feel it in nontargeted muscles?
As with squats and deadlifts, each client will need to experiment with stance width and foot positionāmoving them closer to the butt or farther away.
Also consider range of motion. As with the bird dog, many will try to complete the movement by hyperextending the lower back. Find the point of maximal glute activation, and stop there. Youāll know you have it right when the client feels it in the glutes, and nowhere else.

Final Thoughts About These Prehab/Corrective Exercises
What Iāve just explained only works for your clients if you, the fitness professional, can explain the goal of each exercise in a way that makes sense to them. But you canāt explain what you donāt understand.
And if you donāt understand āsimpleā exercises like the dead bug, bird dog, and glute bridge, how in the world are you going to coach someone with a barbell on his back? Itās like trying to teach high school algebra when youāre still struggling with the nuances of long division.
If, on the other hand, you do understand them, donāt assume your clients share your understanding. It doesnāt take a wizard to coach these three exercises. But it does require a fitness pro whoās paying attention.
