One of the weird upsides of my work is that they put such a huge emphasis on wearing gloves to do work that this has crossed over into real life and tbh. Chores are more tolerable with gloves.

Newsies as Roommates: Chores Edition
Once upon a time, all the Newsies and Kat decided to move into a giant house. Now while it may seem unrealistic, the writer of this new little mini series doesn't care, and has decided to do this anyway. Jack bought the house, and invited the Brooklyn boys to help them move in, but they're all in for a major shock when arriving at the house. So without further ado, welcome to Newsies as Roommates, chapter one.
-The front of the house is covered in stains and eggs and they don't even want to know
-There obviously used to be a garden, but it's overgrown and there are a fuckton of weeds
-There is trash everywhere outside
-The gutters are horrid and the roof needs to be fixed
-Correction, needed to be fixed y e a r s ago
-Inside isn't much better, with graffiti and unfinished walls and holes in a few of the floorboards
-The carpet is a t r o c i o u s with a hell of a lot of stains
-They don't want to talk about upstairs
-Or downstairs
-Or where they're standing
-Everyone looks at Jack, wondering why the hell he bought this place
-But no longer wondering why it's so cheap
-They decide to split into two teams, outside and inside
-Outside is Albert, Smalls, Specs, Romeo, Elmer, Jojo, Les and Colt
-Albert and Elmer go on the roof to clean the gutters, even though Davey screams N O
-Albert accidentally falls, but specs and Romeo by some miracle thought ahead and they had put both Elmer and Al in harnesses
-Specs and Romeo are in charge of picking up trash and then pressure washing the sides of the house
-Jojo and Les work raking the yard, then Jojo teaches Les how to mow
-"DO NOT LET THE NINE YEAR OLD NEAR THAT CHILD DEATH TRAP JOJO!"
-He does it anyway
-Smalls and Colt love gardening and they go to t o w n
-After each of the outside teams finishes their jobs they go and help them
-The inside team is Jack, Race, Spot, Davey, Kat, Dots, Henry, Kid Blink, Sniper, Finch, Mush, Buttons and Crutchie
-This team doesn't split up, as there is too much to do just downstairs, however different pairs cover different tasks
-Kat and Davey work in the front hall to scrub it clean, then they split up and race to finish so they can help Jack and Crutchie paint
-Race and Spot are in charge of garbage in the front hall, then they move to the kitchen and then to the living room, before making it a competition against the other trash team, Kid Blink and Mush
-The house is trash free within an hour
-However neither team will admit defeat so there's a lot of shouting
-Until crutchie comes screams they're all losers because they had to pick up trash
-Dots and Henry scrub the floors and since there's carpet in some of the other rooms, they run to Home Depot for a big carpet cleaner
-buuuuut.... they can't get it out of the car so Jack comes and helps them lift it
-Buttons, Finch and Sniper are in charge of general cleaning
-They all put on gloves, masks, hair nets and aprons and call themselves the Cleaning Baddies
-Dots hears them and smacks them upside the head because "that's the worst joke I've ever heard and I've worked with Race"
-That earned a "OI WATCH IT" from race but a snicker of agreement from everyone else
-Anyway, they clean the windows, countertops, toilets, sinks, fridge, and they dust
-Last but not least, Crutchie and Jack paint the garage and once everyone inside finished their work, the inside
-Crutchie accidentally put his crutch in the paint
-Jack "accidentally" got paint on Crutchie's cheek
-So of course Crutchie "a c c i d e n t a l l y" got paint on Jack's arm
-Once they move inside and start painting the house, Race and Spot end up painting themselves more than the wall
-Mush is surprisingly good at getting the paint even, so he, Jack, Kat and Davey manage to finish a few rooms quickly
-The outdoor people come inside to help paint, and soon they all manage to get the job done
-But they also all have to shower and change because paint some how managed to get all over them
-"JACK I SWEAR IF YOU 'ACCIDENTALLY' GET PAINT ON ME AGAIN YOU'LL REGRET IT"
-"How the hell did you manage to step in it? TWICE?"
-"PAINT GOES ON THE WALL NOT ON HIS BACK"
-"this takes talking to a wall to a whole new level"

The buzz on bees: Why buckets of honey aren’t the only reason you should consider this rewarding hobby | News
On a nice spring day like this, thousands of honeybees are zipping in and out of Mike Rekart’s hives. The Denton County Beekeepers Association member sits about 6 feet away with a beer, watching the ladies — all worker bees are female — return from their journeys. The “pollen baskets” on their back legs are packed with yellow dust from the 50 to 100 flowers each has visited.
A steady buzzing emanates from the wooden box. That sound, as distinctive to bees as honey itself, comes from the insects’ wings beating up to 200 times a second. It does not rattle Mike, who is relaxing in his Denton garden with no special gear on.
“One of the big things the beekeepers in this area are after is gentle bees,” he says. “I can get close to mine. They don’t sting my dog. The strain I have is not aggressive. We’re able to live in harmony with them very easily.”
Mike is watching his hive not just for his own enjoyment, but to see if he notices anything amiss or unusual. Catching a problem early and responding to it is crucial to successful beekeeping — something he found out the hard way during the first two years of his hobby.
“I didn’t do well,” he says. “I made it through the summer, and then it all died. I tried to redo some things myself, and I was just failing. Bees are very forgiving if you get on something that happens to them fast, but I was uneducated about the signs of things happening. I needed some guidance.”
Fortunately, that guidance is available through the Denton County Beekeepers Association for any Denton County resident who is considering the rewarding hobby of beekeeping.
“I joined the club, and man, it was the bomb,” says Mike, who now has one “giant” hive in his backyard, eight more on shared land, more honey than he can eat, and a garden of well-pollinated lemons and avocados. “I feel like I’ve got 30 years’ worth of knowledge now, not three, because the club is really more than the sum of its parts. There’s a whole host of people you can go to to get information that’ll help you, and beekeepers are very excited to swap knowledge and give advice freely.”
The growing club of around 120 members is a little over 3 years old. DCBA President Candi Pardue says the goal is to support Denton County beekeepers while educating residents about our county’s pollinators.
Awareness is important because pollinators such as honeybees are responsible for one out of every three bites of food humans eat, according to Bee City USA, which designated Denton as the state’s second Bee City USA (after Beeville, obviously) in 2016. The certification indicates Denton’s commitment to helping these important pollinators survive.
Beekeeping 101
One way to help is to consider becoming an urban (or suburban) beekeeper yourself. Start by checking your local ordinances, which vary from city to city. Denton’s, for example, stipulates that you may have up to four hives on an acre of land, while Flower Mound says you can have no more than three on less than an acre. If you live in a neighborhood with a homeowners association, check there as well, and of course, take neighbors into consideration. Bees sting as a last resort (each bee can sting only once because the act of stinging kills them), but a neighbor with a life-threatening allergy to bee venom won’t care much about that fun fact.
You need not have a lavish garden or orchard. Your bees will forage within a 2- to 3-mile radius of their hive and can zip around at speeds of up to 15 miles per hour. “They can go up to 5 miles,” says Candi. “I try to tell people not to have tunnel vision.”
Take an Intro to Beekeeping workshop hosted by the DCBA, join a club to network with other beekeepers and consider private lessons. “A lot of people prefer to take lessons,” says Candi, who has been teaching beginner beekeeping for five years. “It’s not a requirement, but I tell people that it’s always wise to invest in your education first because you don’t want to spend the money and time and then fail miserably.”
So how much money and time will you be investing in your new endeavor? Candi says the financial component can vary a lot depending on your choices. Bees cost between $175 and $300, but if you wait too late in the year, you could pay as much as $500.
“Most people wait until about May,” says Candi. “The sun is shining, we have beautiful weather and the flowers are blooming, then they want to become a beekeeper. At that point, it’s almost too late. The earlier in the year you can start planning, the better.”
You’ll also need protective equipment. For that, you can spend as little as $30 for a simple hat, veil and gloves or get a top-of-the-line suit for $300. The same flexibility goes for your wooden hives.
“Do you want to go on the cheap? Or is this something that is going to sit right near your home that you want to look really nice?” asks Candi. “You could spend $350 or you could cut some corners and probably get that down to around $200.”
As for the investment in time, “I tell my first-year students to get in the hive two or three times a week [from May to August or September],” says Candi. “There are beekeepers that have more of a hands-off approach. They believe you just let the bees be bees and maybe check them once a month. That first year, it’s a good idea to be very hands-on. That’s your learning, your education. The more you learn and the better you’re able to anticipate what your bees need, the less time it takes. Around your second or third year, you kind of hit your stride and have a good visual on what they’re doing and what they need from you.”
God save the queen (and her girls)
When you do inspect your hives, Candi says you’re looking to make sure that the queen is healthy and laying enough eggs (as many as 2,500 a day during certain times of year); that the bees have enough but not too much room; and that they are bringing in enough pollen and nectar.
“We do have times of the year in North Texas where there’s a dearth,” she says. “That means there’s no food available for your hive. During that time, we can supplement feed with sugar, syrup, pollen substitute and things like that. You just want to make sure they’re fed. Honeybees are the only livestock that you really want to be fat because a fat bee is a happy bee, and we want happy bees.”
Those are some things you’ll be checking for during inspections, but you will likely run into a lot of other fascinating behaviors as well. Let’s start by meeting the three types of bees you’ll find inside your hive: the queen bee, worker bees and drones.
There is only queen, and she’s key to the colony’s success. They’ll know quickly if she’s gone. An experienced eye can find her; she is longer and leaner than the other bees and has a more pointed abdomen. She takes one mating flight when she’s young, mating in midair with up to 15 males, then in many cases, never leaves the hive again. She can live up to five years but may be replaced by her colony sooner if she’s inefficient at laying eggs.
Drones (boy bees) are created when the queen chooses to lay an unfertilized egg. They make up a very small percentage of the colony because their entire job is to hang out in the sky in drone congregation areas — the bee equivalent of a singles bar — waiting to mate. Because they don’t contribute to the hive (they can’t even fend off invaders because they lack a stinger), they are usually kicked out as winter approaches and food becomes scarce.
The vast majority of a colony is made up of worker bees — daughters of the queen — who hold several jobs during their short lives. They are janitors (cleaning out cells for eggs), nurses (feeding baby bees), construction workers (building honeycomb cells from wax and repairing damaged cells) and guards (keeping the hive safe). They may also regulate the temperature of the hive, bring in water, pack up pollen, seal off finished honey, remove the dead or even tend to the queen. Busy bees indeed!
The last stage of their lives is, of course, foraging. These girls need to gather nectar from about 2 million flowers and fly about 90,000 miles to make a single pound of honey, so there’s no time for wasted flights. That’s why they have an ingenious method of communicating when they’ve found a sweet stash of flowers. It’s called the waggle dance. (Yes, really.) When a forager finds something exciting, she returns with the news and a sample. She shimmies in a figure-eight then does an elaborate dance to communicate where the others can find the treasure.
“Beekeeping is the most fascinating thing,” says Candi. “And you will never in your life taste honey as good as your first honey harvest. True local honey is amazing and hands-down, 100% better than what you’ll buy in a store.”
Threat watch
In addition to the intriguing behaviors of these social little creatures and the pounds of golden honey you’ll get to share with friends, there may be another reason to become a backyard beekeeper: “It wouldn’t be out of the realm of possibility that our bees are actually saved by our small-scale beekeepers because the commercial guys are losing so many,” says Candi. “It’s not a fault of theirs. I love and respect them. They have a really hard job and are doing the best they can, but we need that older style of farming too.”
The oft-talked-about colony collapse disorder is, Candi says, not one single condition but rather the result of a number of factors in our agricultural system. Large commercial pollinators truck hundreds or even thousands of hives around the country to pollinate almonds, berries, canola and other crops. Those bees eat only one thing and are stressed by travel.
“It would be like you and me working 80 hours a week and only eating cheeseburgers,” she says. “At some point, we’re going to be unhealthy, and that’s kind of what those bees face. Bees are not meant to be put on an 18-wheeler and locked in for three days while they travel across the country.”
In addition to stress and poor nutrition, the EPA notes that other risk factors for honeybees include the invasive varroa mite, new and emerging diseases, pesticide poisoning and habitat changes.
We can help with many of these factors as community beekeepers. “Our hives aren’t moving around. They have a very diverse diet with trees and wildflowers. We’re able to supplement and feed them when we need to. They have kind of a cushy job.” And creating more healthy bees with cushy jobs is never a bad thing.
Good stewards
Whether you have an interest in beekeeping or just want to help keep these important pollinators safe, you can help by planting bee-friendly plants, supporting legislation that helps bees and using caution when using chemicals in your yard.
“Bees are amazing, and they’re fun,” says Candi. “The more beekeepers and non-beekeeping residents in the county can work together and benefit each other when it comes to herbicide and pesticide use and hive management, the better. We’re stewards for this tiny bee, so let’s put our best foot forward and do the best we can for everybody, so everyone is happy, and bees aren’t ever a nuisance in Denton County.”

Going Herbal: First Steps
OK, we’ve been through WHY and HOW to go about foraging for herbs and plants. Today it’s about WHAT: what you need in a way of equipment and what to do with your herbs once you’ve collected them.
Considering the equipment, there are two sets of things: the stuff you need for the actual collecting of plants and the ingredients – other than herbs – used in various recipes.
The equipment for foraging
You don’t need much, and what you need you probably already have anyway:
A basket: in my experience, a plastic carrier bag causes leaves and flowers to wilt rapidly, and roots or bark to sweat. You need something which will not keep humidity. Ideally, you’d have a wicker or rattan basket and you’d line it with paper (newspapers are the best, though you can use paper towels). If you don’t have a basket like this, you can use any smallish plastic basket (you can get these in any pound shop) and line it well with newspapers. That’s Yorkshire for you – we still talk about good ole days when fish ’n’ chips were sold in newspapers (so you can get sustenance and information simultaneously) instead of this faceless white paper we have to use by law.
Gloves: although, to be honest, I rarely use them, they are very useful for protecting your hands. If you have sensitive skin, they are definitely a must. Thin garden gloves are the best, but if you don’t have them any gloves will do (well, not boxing gloves, obviously).
Small sharp knife for cutting flower heads and peeling bark. I say “small” for the reason of practicality as well as the reason of legality. I mean, if you want to walk around like Crocodile Dundee it’s up to you, but in the UK you’ll get arrested for carrying a monster knife in public. I use those cheap yellow Stanley knives and pruner (high technology, me). BTW, when peeling bark, make sure you don’t damage the trunk or main branches - get the bark from the smaller side branches.
A hand-held small spade to help you dig roots. You can use an old cutlery knife.
That’s about it. With these few things you’re all set to go.
A few bits of advice for foraging:
Do not pack your herbs too densely – you should avoid bruising leaves and flowers
Check the plant before you place it in the basket – there might be some bugs on it. If there are, just gently remove them (shake, flick or blow off). If you’re not a bug aficionado and normally deal with them using slippers or rolled newspapers etc. – refrain please. Whatever squishes a bug squishes a flower as well. In addition, if you’re big on karma – you’ll sleep better knowing you spared a bug’s life.
After you dig out a root, wipe it or brush it gently to remove as much dirt as you can
Once you’re back home, don’t leave the stuff in the basket for later. Allow yourself a quick cuppa and then sort the herbs straight away. If you’re using fresh ingredients, get to the first stage of the recipe straight away. If you’re drying stuff, set it to dry as soon as possible.
Let’s look at the most common non-herbal ingredients used in various recipes:
Paper bags / boxes to keep dried ingredients. I use shoe boxes lined with tissue paper. The lid keeps dust away but does not hermetically seal the box
Jars and bottles.
I use glass ones because glass is sterilised easily by simply boiling it in water for a few minutes. If you happen to have a baby-bottles steriliser, then you can use plastic ones as well. As long as they have a good lid and can be sterilised, they’re fine. Don’t use metal, though. If you want to use wooden or terracotta vessels, you can sterilise them with lye, rinse with freshly boiled water and dry in a warm-ish (not hot) oven. For lid use waxed paper, tightly tied. Terracotta should be glazed inside. As I said – lots of hassle; glass is easy.
Oils
Traditionally, either cold-pressed olive oil or hemp oil has been used, as they were the most available oils. Meanwhile, more oils became readily available, such as coconut oil, which has turned out to be great, especially for skin creams. It is great on its own, as you might know, having antifungal, hydrating etc. properties. If you’re out of any of these, you can use sesame or sunflower oil. I don’t know about palm, corn or canola – I’d have to do some research to find out a bit more about their chemistry. Whichever oil you use, it should be cold-pressed.
Lard
Ointments are often made with lard. Lard needs to be perfectly clean – when it is, it’s snow white. If you get lard from a pig farm to use in cooking, chances are it might be slightly yellowish or ivory in colour. This lard is tastier, but to use it with herbs you need to wash it. It’s easy enough: fill a bowl with cold water, put the lard in and then play with it (think Demi Moore in “Ghost”). You might need to do it a few times, using fresh cold water every time.
If you’re getting lard in a supermarket, it’s perfectly clean anyway. I don’t use it, though, because I have this niggling thought at the back of my mind that supermarket meat comes from animals fed with hormones (to grow faster) and antibiotics (to keep them from infections). I’m probably just a bit paranoid… or am I?...
If you’re vegetarian and find the very thought of using lard revolting, or if your religion forbids anything of pig origin – well, I’m not sure what to advise. I don’t know of any veggie substitute that has the same consistency, melting point, stability etc.
Honey and bees wax
This is probably the most expensive ingredient you might need. The honey needs to be real honest-to-God-pollen-only honey. Lots of large-scale-produced honey is made by bees largely fed by sugar. That honey is much cheaper, but also lacks majority of goodness coming from pollen. Also, like with whisky, honey can be “single malt” or blend. If you get honey that just says “honey”, it is probably a blend (this is not necessarily a bad thing, as long as it’s real honey). If it says, for example, meadow honey, it is kind of a “natural” blend – bees have fed in meadows where a variety of different wild flowers grow. My favourite honey is chestnut honey. It is quite dark and has a slightly bitter undertaste, like when you make caramel and sugar gets just a tad burnt. My son, on the other hand, swears by acacia honey, which is very pale and mild. In any case, it might be a good idea to find a bee keeper around you and get in touch. Then you’ll know where your honey comes from, don’t have to be worried about queen bees having their wings clipped, and you’ll be able to get some real bees wax when you need it. Oh, by the way – if your honey starts to crystallise, there’s nothing wrong with it. You can still use it as it is, but if you want it get smooth again just heat the jar a bit in a bowl of hot water.
Alcohol
“Hmm, I might get into this herbal malarkey,” I can hear you say. However, this might be a bit tricky for using my recipes if you don’t live in the Balkans. You see, in the UK you can make your own wine and beer to your heart’s desire, but hard liquor – that’s illegal to make at home. In the Balkans, whoever has fruit trees makes at least one batch of rakija per season. Rakija is a kind of fruit brandy; it has a minimum of 20-25% alcohol (anything below is basically a milkshake) and, if anyone ever tries to make home distilleries illegal in Balkans, they will see an uprising compared to which Spartacus merely lodged a complaint. I don’t know how it is now, but when I was a kid, people were practically ashamed of giving a shot of shop-bought rakija to a guest. As a matter of fact, there was usually a special bottle or two for a very special guest or occasion. Some people used to bury a small barrel of home-made rakija in the garden on the day a male child was born. The barrel was dug out on the child’s wedding day and the whole wedding party would get sloshed on top-notch stuff. Rakija is always made of fruit (as opposed to for example, whisky, which is made of grain, or tequila, which is made from agave, or rum, which is made from sugarcane). The most common rakija is slivovica, made from plums (there is actually a sort of plum, oval in shape and not much bigger than a walnut, which is especially appreciated in rakija and jam making). In various parts of the Balkans other fruit is used: apricot, quince, pear, apple and Cornelian cherry rakijas are quite common. Besides slivovica, rakija called loza (made mostly in Montenegro and Dalmacia) is best loved – it’s made from grapes and is a bit like Italian grappa. Rakijas with a lower alcohol content are called “meka” (meaning “soft”), and really strong ones (50-70%) are called “ljuta” (meaning both “angry” and “hot” – as in taste).
Then there’s komovica. Komovica is made from “kom”, which is the name given to leftovers – basically dregs - in wine making (remains of wine mixed with solids). Although some people actually like to drink it (no comment) it is widely used for home-made medicinal concoctions, either by itself (e.g. for lowering fever) or mixed with various herbs. If you can’t get your hands on komovica, see if you can get grappa, or Spanish/Portuguese aguardiente. If all fails, you can use a good, strong vodka. I never tried, but maybe tequila would work as well. By the way – if you ever decide to try to be a rakija connoisseur, and your usual is whisky with beer chasers, be very careful: whisky and beer are both made from grain, but mixing fruit and grain is best left for breakfast cereals. Many a westerner came to the Balkans and decided (against all advices from local folk) to have rakija with beer chasers. This is commonly known as “armoured concrete” and usually results in gaining consciousness three days later, after numerous IVs in A&E.
Emulsifier
If you’ve heard the word before, chances are it was in a bad way. It is a very common additive in ready-made food. Some emulsifiers caused lots of hubbub when it turned out they were harmful. Worry not, young Padawan, leading you to the Dark Side I am not. Emulsifier is simply a substance that makes emulsions stable. Emulsion is a kind of mixture, made from stuff that normally would not happily mix (like President Trump and Mexican immigrants; or, if you’re easily offended, then think oil and water). If you’ve ever had a jar of mayo separated to yellowish dregs at the bottom and layer of oil at the top, you know what I mean. Now, when you know that virtually all the creams, shop-bought or home-made, are emulsions, it makes sense that there are some emulsifiers in them, simply to make them last longer. There are a lot of natural emulsifiers, some of them with their own beneficial properties. For example: calcium carbonate (calcium supplements sold in health shops; its code as a food additive is E170), vitamin C (E300), vitamin E (E306) or magnesium carbonate (E504) which is both health supplement and the chalk that gymnasts use to keep their hands dry. Another natural emulsifier is soy lecithin (E322). If you don’t want to use emulsifier, it shouldn’t be a problem - just make a very small batch (small jar or so) because its shelf life might be short.
So, you’ve got all you need, you had a nice stroll through woods and meadows and you’re back home with a basketful of stuff. Now what?
Obviously, it depends what you want to make. If you’re making a preparation that calls for fresh ingredients, prepare everything you need before you actually set off foraging and get on with the first stage of making your recipe as soon as you’re back. If you want to dry the stuff, spread it out for drying straight away. OK, allow yourself a cuppa, but otherwise don’t delay.
If you collected plants for drying, this is how you go about it:
Whole plants: you can just tie them in a bunch and hang upside-down
Roots: tie them with a strong thread or string into a necklace-like contraption and hang to dry
Leaves and flowers: cover a flat surface (table, couch you can do without for a few days…) with paper and thinly spread leaves/flowers. Check from time to time and turn if needed. Depending on a plant, temperature, air humidity etc. it will need on average 3-7 days for leaves/flowers to dry. It might need longer, but make sure they are completely dry. If they are not, any preparations made with them will have a drastically reduced life.
Important: regardless of whether you’re drying whole herbs or the parts, make sure that the stuff is NOT in direct sunlight and that there is a good air circulation. The best temperature for drying is 20-30°C (approx. 70-80F)
Well, I think this is more or less everything you need to know about the topic. In my next post I’ll introduce you to the benefits of one of the most hated weeds: common nettle. If you (or someone you know) have problems with prostate, liver, bowels, profuse nose bleeding or period bleeding and, most definitely, if you want something natural to give strength and shine to your hair – nettle’s the thing to go for.
