i cannot imagine what it would’ve felt like to be yotsuba-era light making all these connections between himself and the previous KIRA killings. to see the evidence of such horrible violence and know how evil it is, know what a twisted, pathetic imitation of justice this immature idiot was enacting— but to have it all still resonate with something deep within you. you trust your memories because of course, how could you not, it’s all you’ve ever known to do— but you still allow yourself to be subject to all these breaches of human rights because on some level, you don’t trust yourself either.
i can even see the exact same coping mechanism that led to KIRA leading to amnesia! light’s repression of these connections, actually— a desire to see oneself as someone good, someone pure and virtuous, originally manipulated into a justification for serial murder, now desperately clung to as an explanation for why it couldn’t be you. it can’t be you. it can’t. you were perfect, you are perfect, you were a good boy, the best, you did everything they told you to do— how could you ever have fallen so far?
yotsuba arc light really is on a whole ‘nother level when it comes to seeing the evil inside of you, looking into the alternate timeline and watching what you could’ve become. only, in this story, you’re not the main character anymore— you’re the tragedy, the bittersweet taste of what could’ve been. you look at your jailer and you resent him for all that he’s taken from you, your freedom, your family, your life, but you allow your wrists to be chained to him anyway because you know that if it’s true, if you really are the horror he insists you are, he’s the only thing that could ever possibly stop you. you hate him and you need him and you don’t know what will happen if he ever lets you go— you fear your own potential even as it draws him ever closer, fear your capability to be the monster under your own bed. so you let him cling and grasp at you, bite back the fears, lock away the nightmares, and go back to sleep to escape the looming threat of your own lost humanity.
and then you wake up. and you kill him.
and this is the only way it ever could’ve been.

ooo, a shinigami eyes logistics talk again, i've written about this before!! i have some slight disagreements with this answer actually:
This only occurred because Ryuk dropped a Death Note and Light Yagami picked it up. With this, we can say with certainty that humans have free will and deaths that were not supposed to happen can occur if people interfere.
while it is definitely true that the deaths light causes go against those predestined by the lifespan counters the shinigami can see, i would argue that this is not actually proof of human free will, but of free will specifically related to the death note.
by the inherent nature of how shinigami use their death notes, it is necessary that human lifespans are static and unchanging (they wouldn't be able to gain any years otherwise), which means that to some degree they must be predetermined. humans may have some free will on a smaller scale, in terms of the specific actions they take day to day, how they eventually die, etc., but as a whole they cannot escape that number. if a human were to, for example, attempt suicide long before their lifespan ran out right before a shinigami could successfully write down their name (i.e. they die due to free will and not because of either their name being written or their counter running out), it would presumably fuck up the shinigami's ability to feed their own lifespan. humans thus must have at the very least have some major limitations on their free will, if we're assuming that this aspect of the shinigami's survival mechanism takes priority.
point is, shinigami need to be able to rely on lifespan counters as accurate for the sake of their survival. death notes themselves may go against the predetermined course of the universe in this way by killing people before their due date, but even in the case that a human is using a DN, this should not be taken as evidence of human free will-- just the ability for a shinigami-based entity to go against the natural course of human fates.
[Light] killed them with the Death Note, which was never supposed to be involved. And this is the same question that is raised when we consider Soichiro Yagami—and even Mello, for that matter. Mello likely never would've joined the mafia and done all this crazy dangerous stuff, Soichiro likely never would have gone into a dangerous raid at his age, if it weren't for the presence of the Death Note.
there are some official rules relevant to this one, specifically:
Whether the cause of the individual's death is either a suicide or accident, if the death leads to the death of more than the intended, the person will simply die of a heart attack. This is to ensure that other lives are not influenced. (X) [ and ] A human death caused by the Death Note will indirectly lengthen some other human's original life even without a specific intention to lengthen a particular person's original life span in the human world. (LIX) [ note also that X is essentially repeated in XXVI as: "Even though only one name is written in the Death Note, if it influences and causes other humans that are not written in it to die, the victim's cause of death will be a heart attack." ]
thus at least according to the official DN rules (and this could definitely have some plot holes/inconsistencies, but let's see if we can make it fit anyways) human lifespans can be influenced by deaths caused by the DN, but only in a positive manner, e.g. a lifespan can end up longer than originally determined, but cannot end up shorter.
the most questionable/unrealistic part of all of this in my mind though is that claim that, "other lives are not influenced." the more obvious point that this is trying to establish is that other (unwritten) lives cannot be cut off in the sense that you can't write "Person A kills [such-and-such]," without writing both names, meaning that light can't write something like, "Soichiro Yagami kills the head of the KIRA investigation, the man under the pseudonym L," and end the story prematurely. but this statement also has the somewhat awkward side effect of implying that lives as a whole cannot be majorly influenced by the DN so long as their names are not written...
ANYWAYS, the important point here is again the fact that the lifespan itself is what is being predetermined, and not necessarily the exact cause of death. perhaps there are many paths that an individual human may take throughout their life, and they have free will in terms of which specific one they choose-- but they cannot change the natural date of when they're fated to die, at least not without the help of the shinigami. and again, a death cannot come earlier due to DN influence, only later.
soichiro took the eyes because he was already suicidal-- he thought himself a failure for allowing mello to get the DN and use him to manipulate the task force, for choosing his daughter's life over his job. i can very easily see an alternate timeline where he allowed matsuda to take the eyes as planned, only to either off himself or die from the same explosion but slightly slower a day later than in canon, or even one where he did take the eyes but wrote mello's name, forcing light to kill him to cover his tracks & keep up appearances with the 13 day rule. thus his death was coming soon no matter what in the timeline where a DN does exist-- and in the case where it doesn't, where light never got the notebook or ryuk never dropped it, i think the divergences are just too extreme for us to be able to claim whether or not he would've died at that same point in time. our only evidence is really the lifespan itself, which would presumably claim that he dies either at the same time as his dead in canon, or even a bit earlier if we assume that the DN's influence somehow lengthened his life in some way (maybe by killing a criminal that would've gotten him?).
edit: the key point here is that soichiro’s name wasn’t written, so his lifespan can’t be influenced to be shorter by the DN.
in the case of mello, i guess i just don't see it as all that unrealistic that mello would've still joined the mafia or somehow lost his shit, considering how relatively disconnected both mello & near are from the KIRA investigation. their rivalry (well, maybe more like "rivalry" in near's case) seems like such a key part of their characters, i can see plenty of other circumstances under which something like that might've happened. and we don't really know mello's "true" death date anyways, since takada killed him with the DN, so...
[D]espite halving her lifespan twice, I think Misa had the potential to live for an extremely long time, possibly even way past the average lifespan of a normal human. But she killed herself. And that's where the big question about free will and destiny come in.
your equation is a very helpful visual, but the one thing that i think it may be missing is the fact that misa had already run up against the end of her natural lifespan at the time that gelus saved her and gave her his little time infusion. so, when we're judging whether or not it is realistic that misa would've died by the end of the story, we're really only counting 1/4 of gelus's lifespan + all of rem's remaining time.
i don't think it's entirely unrealistic that even if shinigami as a whole have plenty of time ticking away, gelus & rem do not. their interest in misa to begin with sets the two of them up as kinda weird in contrast with the rest of the shinigami-- honestly, even ryuk, with his fixation on humans as a source of entertainment, is a bit of an odd one out. shinigami just Don't seem to give much of a shit about humanity (at least until KIRA happens)-- looking at ryuk's explanation:
In actual fact, shinigami these days don't have a lot to do. All they do is nap, or gamble. If they see you scribbling humans' names into your death note, they say, "What're you working so hard for?" and laugh at you. (ch.1)
thus, at least at the start of the story, shinigami have some degree of social pressure to not want to write their names down (assuming they care about being laughed at) and/or typically just don't give enough of a shit to bother unless they're already running super low (e.g. sidoh). considering the fact that gelus was busy watching misa all the time, and that his lifespan was essentially quartered by the end, it doesn't seem too unrealistic to me to think that he wasn't exactly giving her a whole lot. they also don't seem to have any way of knowing, in exact terms, just how much life they or other shinigami have left, since their lifespan counters are not revealed by their eyes like human lifespans are, so if a shinigami isn’t paying a whole lot of attention it may be easy to let it trickle down a lot without realizing.
the bigger question here is perhaps rem, who dies by writing watari & L's names, yes, but also writes down the name of one of higuchi's victims while in the car with misa to help convince him that she's the second KIRA, meaning that she has at least the remains of one human lifespan to hand over to misa right at the end of the story...
obviously though, a lot of this is just speculation since we never actually know how much time either shinigami had (and perhaps they didn't even know themselves, considering again that they can only see human lifespans). misa definitely could've had a super long lifespan and lived long past an ordinary human lifespan, exactly as you say. in the manga canon specifically, we never actually see her in-story again and her "confirmed" death date is only something from vol. 13, which has somewhat questionable information that at the very least isn't explicitly depicted in the canon of the story itself.
(reason number 5 billion why that "random woman," at the end of the series should totally be misa because i mean come. on. the woman whose whole thing is living past when she should've died, living for [x] stupidly long time to lead some mystery KIRA cult in the mountains??? obha, what the fuck. it's right there.)
wait so soichiro died a day after getting the eyes. so does that mean he only had two days left to live??? đŸ˜±
Ooookay, so this one is a very common claim/theory. The same applies to the, MIsa committed suicide a year after the manga ended, meaning people think that's how many years she got from Gelus and Rem combined as well as halving twice. Personally, I find that unlikely. I'll get to Soichiro, but I'm going to use Misa as the main example for the followiong rant:
It sounds like Shinigami don't bothering writing down names often, meaning they're generally okay on remaining years. They could write the names of two humans and have like, nearly two hundred years added to their lifespan. Only Shinigami we've ever seen worried about running out is Sidoh. Gelus we only knew for five seconds, but Rem never seems to say or do anything indicating that she is lacking in years. So here is my little equation that is likely wrong because I am tired right now:
Tumblr media
In my personal opinion, despite halving her lifespan twice, I think Misa had the potential to live for an extremely long time, possibly even way past the average lifespan of a normal human. But she killed herself. And that's where the big question about free will and destiny come in. How much do humans actually control? Was it a coincidence the Misa's scheduled death was going to be at the hands of a stalker who planned a murder-suicide? Or was it somehow destined and predetermined that this man would grow obsessed with Misa to the point he ends both of their lives?
Criminals are dropping dead at alarming rates, and it is very much NOT NORMAL. It can only be the work of a person somehow causing these deaths. There was not supposed to be a sudden, random wave of criminal deaths. This only occurred because Ryuk dropped a Death Note and Light Yagami picked it up. With this, we can say with certainty that humans have free will and deaths that were not supposed to happen can occur if people interfere. Not to mention that Shinigami take years from humans who had remaining years, so they are messing with how lifespans and whatnot are supposed to naturally work.
So Light Yagami caused deaths that were never supposed to happen via his choices/actions. He killed them with the Death Note, which was never supposed to be involved.
So did Soichiro Yagami canonically have two days to live? The answer is that there is no way of actually knowing. In my personal opinion, the answer is no.

bro imagine yandere alien and yandere astronaut threesome love triangle
you'd be another astronaut of course, travelling the wonders of the world and space along side your partners which obviously includes this smitten astronaut.
being in love with you since day 1, this astronaut knows you by heart. he'll recite everything about you like it's the national pledge. he's just so terribly in love that he'd do everything for you. and that includes keeping you safe, with him of course.
but oh no!! by some god forsaken accident, your space craft failed and now you're on this alien planet!!! what?1!1! đŸ˜±đŸ˜±đŸ˜± and all your other crewmates are dead too??? except for him?? oh no it looks like you two are stuck with each other forever now... 😇😇 like he didn't orchestrate this whole incident just so you two could be alone forever...
stuck in an unknown planet with only him, all you could do was trust him. he'd never do anything to hurt you after all!
but then you met this alien while out on your own one day??? and the alien was so drawn in by you that he's now madly in love with you too???
astronaut guy is pissed but you?? you?? you're happy??? what??? and your explanation??
three dicks is better than one :3 (alien has two dicks)
like what?!?

oh, well don’t mind if i DO:
fem L is a WEIRD GIRL!!! i do mean Weird Girlâ„ąïž, bc quite frankly we desperately need some fucking rep for that.
honestly, part of the difficulty of coming up with a fem L au to begin with is the fact that i don’t think she would actually be all that different from canon— like, a key part of L’s character is the fact that they don’t Give A Fuck about social norms. light would have a whole Character Shift bc in any universe light is a character who heavily relies on/is affected by the ways in which others See them, but for L this is simply not the case.
(tbh even for a male L i tend to headcanon that he only uses he/him at all because it’s easier and/or he hasn’t given it much thought, especially because pre-KIRA he interacts with like. one (1) person per day, presumably. gender just ain’t all that big of a deal either way to him, and all of his interactions with people irl feel like they’re some level of performance anyways with how much of an active liar he is, lmfao)
so like
appearances-wise she’d probably be mostly the same. *maybe* longer hair but that’s a Big maybe and only depends on if she doesn’t have any sensory issues w/ it, and/or she’s simply too lazy or uncaring to get it cut regularly. but the jeans & white tee are sticking around no matter what, that’s Core L any universe
also tbh i can see L having curly hair (like very loose curls, where it makes ringlets when it’s wet & long enough but flattens into whatever shape it’s squished into— projecting here lmao) but Not taking care of it so it’s just like. shitty and messy and kinda lowkey frizzy all the time. light gives her a proper curly hair treatment Once during yotsuba and is so horrified by how gorgeous it is that she simply never does it again, purely for the sake of her own ego. (and also bc making her jailer any degree of actively pretty is a Terrible Fucking Idea)
would be kinda funny if she’s got some decent boobage under that shitty t-shirt though, if only cuz it’d probably annoy the fuck outta light LOL (L thinks light’s cuter flat anyways, & slightly resents how they get in the way sometimes, though not to the point of top surgery since they’re kinda nice to squish on occasion too— she just settles for a decently tough sports bra most days to keep em outta the way)
also it’s definitely bush central down there regardless of genitalia but ANYWAYS
that all being said, i still think there’d be some key differences here, specifically in how other people would treat/react to her
(sidenote— if you’re open to smut, dear whoever is reading this, i highly recommend the fic Diamond by exAm on ao3 as a beautiful demonstration of a fem!L x male light dynamic that is delightfully terrible and very very accurate characterization-wise, imho. especially for watari, actually, which is v interesting.)
an example of this— where light being a woman might kind of aid her in the KIRA investigation w/ people taking her less seriously (even if it internally drives her up the wall & she pushes back on it every time), i can see it being a point of like. backhanded praise, intentionally or no, when applied to L
like L shows her face for the first time and it takes the task force a minute to even realize she’s a girl at all (ouran host club haruhi-introduction style) only to be like “wowie!! a woman is the best detective in the world!!! incredible!!!” (matsuda voice)
again going back to watari— the father/daughter dynamic hits the second tower here. i can actually see watari taking a bit more of an active/paternalistic role here when it comes to fem L, like taking over certain situations even before being explicitly asked to, etc.
i don’t see him pushing her to perform any trad femininity necessarily, but i can see him being especially protective of her physically— acting as a bodyguard in public appearances, speaking up more frequently when it comes to matters of personal health, etc. nothing too major, but just more of a general Vibe of keeping a closer watch than was depicted in canon maybe
i can also, weirdly, see the task force being a lot more open to going with her questionable shit when she pushes it, specifically out of some kind of underlying/unconscious/instinctive assumption that if it gets too bad they can just physically overpower her to stop her. fem L’s torture of a male misa would be especially brutal is my point here, like even moreso than canon as the task force is more likely to go “yeah, he’s a Man, he can handle it,” and underplay the torture as it happens.
following that logic, i can also see a fem L being a bit more actively/openly sadistic when it comes to fucking with people— perhaps even unintentionally, like she’s internalized the shit about being Less Strong to some degree and hits more viciously in response bc she just doesn’t see it as being that big of a deal
the concept of the heirs is also fascinating in this context. i can’t imagine L would be particularly Down for the concept of pregnancy (would take too much time away from cases, at minimum), but a fem L kind of inherently adds an interesting maternal spin on it anyways. i actually feel even more inclined to consider the idea of near or someone else being L’s actual bio child in this universe, though again i can’t imagine L being in favor of staying pregnant— bit of a watari pro-lifer moment? shitty old man.
also loving the idea of genderswapped wammy’s kids. mello who is So Obviously a dyke & has plenty of butch-like qualities but denies them vehemently all the while presenting them anyways. i can see fem! mello having such a complicated relationship with gender, like dressing/acting in the exact same gender-fuckery way as canon but being very attached to this softer, kinder, sweeter ideal of femininity personality-wise— all while also resenting those exact qualities in near, who becomes this like Ultra Soft paragon of co-dependency without even trying (basically canon tbh). the tsundere really becomes obvious in a fem mello i suppose, even more than canon miraculously ahekfkdjdn. fem matt would be hot and the coolest loserwoman alive yay <33 play your games and never go outside queen i love you
fem! beyond is practically canon as far as birthdaymassacre toxic evil yuri is concerned. everyone cheer.
headcanons complete end of post 🎉
bookworm-san, dear mutual. do you happen to have any more fem! light headcanons/thoughts? for healing, for the soul

 😌
Darling. Gimme just a second to reread my posts on the AU and get my brain juices going again 🙏
(Also, fun fact: I do actually have my name in my lil bio bit lol! I don't think most people notice.)
Fem!Light during the Yotsuba Arc may have been more aggressive than canon Light about separating herself from a relationship with Misa, simply because it isn't assumed that "well, I'm the one who must have asked... I just can't figure out why" because that's not how her relationship dynamics work. She doesn't remember saying yes, she can't imagine why she would have said yes, Misa is clearly delusional and can fuck right off. Her aggression might be the only reason why Misa wouldn't white-knight his way into stopping the mutual lawlight murder attempt on their first "date" lmao. I can clearly imagine him trying to heroically interject and protect his girlfriend only for Light to shriek "fuck OFF Misa" so 'unfemininely' that it takes Misa a full fifteen minutes to reboot lmao.
This is me projecting because I'm a 100 pound girl with a-cups but I want Light to have small boobs (also canon Light has a flat ass anyway). Let me sexualize my body type for once, gimme that. Tiny lace bralettes, zero cleavage through a shirt neckline, barely a handful of titty and you can probably fit most of the boob in your mouth, but anybody who's interested in her either doesn't notice or actively likes it.
On a related note, average-ish height, like canon, so like 5'4 or 5'5, but small person. If that makes sense. I want people to be able to just pick her up with minimal effort because that means it would happen more often (I have friends who literally just throw me over their shoulders and walk away without asking me first) and she would fucking hate it and I think that's hilarious.
Flats-only girlie. Coward. Until L bullies her into heels for fetish purposes ONCE and Light has trouble walking and it makes her red-faced angry embarrassed which does NOT deter L in the slightest.
I think she'd wear her hair half-up half-down in a neat little clip in the back with bangs, it's very Professional and Pretty and intentionally chosen. She pigtail braids her hair at night Cinderella-style to keep it nice and L finds it annoying. The only time we would see it down in the canon timeline would be in solitary confinement, and the rain + foot scene and proceeding death scene (because that was immediately after).
For her death scene in particular, I think her hair would start up, as it usually is, but it would definitely have gone really askew and fallen out of the clip by the time she dies.
I really can't decide how exactly her relationship with Ryuk would change based on her perception of gender dynamics but I'm absolutely sure it would, whether or not we genderbend Ryuk as well. Idk, someone else help me flesh this one out bc it's all just a nebulous feeling in my head.
The daddy issues. Dude. The daddy issues would be so bad. Like, we already had "I desperately want my dad to think I live up to his expectations of me + dad is too busy with his job all the time to feel like a legit regular part of the family". Now imagine that combined with the fact that Soichiro just assumes Light has Woman Brain. "It's wonderful that you're top of your class and you're getting a degree, all capable women should go to college, but don't you think you should pick a less demanding career path so you won't have such a hard time having a family one day?? It's really sweet that you want to follow in my career path honey but I don't know if this job is good for girls like you". That scene with Namikawa would happen and L would praise her like canon and Soichiro's jaw would fucking drop. Ugh.
On a similar note I absolutely do not think Light would be able to stomach playing up the "I'm JUST a GIRL I CANT be KIRA đŸ„șđŸ„șđŸ„ș" schtick even to draw some of the suspicion off of herself because canon Light already had such a hard time literally just not showing off and now add in fem! Light's inferiority complex. She would get so salty every single time people suggested it's not possible for her to be Kira ""even though I'm not"". The ONLY times she would be willing to play up the canon ditz act is when it makes her look a little careless, NEVER stupid.

People who claim that ancient civilizations were guided by aliens or possessed advanced technology to build their magnificent structures don't give our ancestors nearly enough credit. Sure, they may not have known what germs are or that outer space existed, but at the same time, they literally invented math. I'm pretty sure they could figure out how to make things out of really big rocks

omg thank you for @ ing me!! in response to your question: i absolutely agree. yotsuba light, were he to receive the DN but none of the accompanying memories of being KIRA, would in no way willingly use that power, especially during that arc.
for a much more in depth look at this, i'd highly recommend casuistor's yotsbua light analysis, but tl;dr: a key aspect of light's amnesia during yotsuba is the fact that he doesn't just lose his memories but essentially has them rewritten (check out that post for a full timeline of what light's rewritten memories might look like). essentially, all that yotsuba! light remembers about the KIRA case is being continually and viciously hunted down by L, despite being (in light's mind) completely innocent. yotsuba! light sees himself as the victim of an unfortunate mistake-- but he also deeply aware of just how dangerous of a position that puts him in. it's part of why he pushes the Good Boy, Nice Son angle so fucking hard during yotsuba, because he knows he is being "wrongly" suspected and/or framed, and needs to do everything he can to prove his innocence. his dedication is fully flipped-- KIRA (well L, by proxy) has ruined light's life, and yotsuba! light is fully aware of this, even if KIRA himself cannot allow himself to see it. it's exactly as you say-- yotsuba! light is, "a pawn in someone else's game," (his own, ironically) and he cannot afford to make any questionable moves so long as L is the one watching.
again though, as you said, this is not to say that he wouldn't sympathize with KIRA at all-- we in fact have canon evidence of him doing exactly that (a couple times, in fact):
Tumblr media Tumblr media
but i see this more as something akin to how matsuda views KIRA-- seeing the positive effects of KIRA's actions for what they are (lowered crime rate, no wars, etc.), while still condemning the approach itself as murder. light thinks like KIRA because he is KIRA, which is a truth that at you can't entirely avoid, but what's important here is the circumstances surrounding him.
the original context of light finding & using the DN matters a lot for the original creation of KIRA-- it's only through the initial blast of Oh Shit that light's brain starts working overtime to try and justify his actions back at him, to soothe his grief regret so he can still feel like the good, respectable guy everyone says he is-- even after accidentally killing two people. again, taking from casuistor here, but before the god complex was a martyr complex:
Tumblr media
light sees KIRA's actions as evil, but a necessary evil, one that he must personally take upon his shoulders to cleanse the world of sin. and he never stops acknowledging that what KIRA is doing is a crime. even when he is being confronted by near in the YB warehouse, minutes before his own death, light fully calls the actions of KIRA criminal:
Tumblr media
or in the viz translation:
LIGHT: I knew I was the only one capable of doing it. I knew that killing people was a crime. But that was the only way to correct this world, and one day, people will accept that as being righteous. LIGHT: I had to take the role of KIRA and do it. This was a mission that was entrusted to me. I was chosen to make amends for this rotten world, and to create a truly safe and ideal world. LIGHT: With this notebook... LIGHT: Would anybody else have been able to do this? Come this far? And continue doing it?
so, frankly, the martyr complex never really dies. which makes sense, as light only starts going on about the god shit when ryuk has tramped into his room and demanded entertainment with the underlying threat of light's own life.
all this really only makes it all the more batshit just how quickly light gets back on board with the plan when he does regain his memories in that helicopter. no regrets, no questions-- even pre-yotsuba arc, KIRA's mind has commit to the idea that This Is His Destiny so hard that even months of questioning KIRA's actions cannot stand a chance against his prior dedication. and it truly is all downhill from that point.
@applestorms as it stands you’re probably the most death note-invested person i’ve remotely interacted with so i wanted to ask you. i’ve had this question brewing for a couple of days:
if light was not the original kira, but was given the power of kira at any point during the investigation, would he have accepted the power?
i think we all know that fundamentally, light has the perception of the world that makes him think like kira: the childish sense of justice, much like mikami, the idea that good is forcing criminals to be truly punished for their actions. However, I think that if he were to be given the notebook at any point during the investigation,
(not that it would. there’s no world in which he joins the investigation and is given the notebook, with soichiro being the chief of police, and with him being as outwardly intelligent and potentially even well-known for being the incoming valedictorian at to-oh)
he would refuse to use it, purely based on the fact that he was not originally kira. I think that while he would be intrigued by it, he would ultimately side with L and the police only because kira was not his creation. not his game. at that point, he’s a pawn in someone else’s game, even if he were magnitudes smarter.
honestly, in my own headcanon, regaining ownership of the death note after the yotsuba arc kinda sets that idea in stone for me. Something that most people gloss over when talking about post yotsuba light is the impact that his memory has had. unless the death note magically fixes all of his perceptions, he’s now struggling with the memories that he has of owning the death note and the thought processes he had during yotsuba and what he believed to be before yotsuba, where he’s trying to catch kira.
i believe he’s able to reconcile this issue with the fact that yotsuba light isn’t upon someone else’s game, he’s a pawn in his own game and he trusts his own judgement, which overrides whatever moral code he has against kira’s style.ïżŒ
now i haven’t read the manga and i certainly haven’t analyzed every part of the anime, but i feel like i hit this nail on the head. if light, in some world where he did not pick up the death note at first, were to be given the power of the death note at any time during the investigation, he would ultimately refuse to use it and try to catch kira, purely because of his own hubris.

L can be such a possessive character at times. he always strikes me as the type of person who is deeply aware of everything that he owns, both in a more literal sense and metaphorically-- like, he knows what money he has and how to use it, what resources are readily available to him and what he has to be sneakier to utilize, the habits and tendencies and emotional states of individuals and world governments both. the DN musical really puts an emphasis on the more computer-y aspects of how his brain functions, which isn't as obvious in the manga/anime but i think still works well as a way to follow his thinking. it's kinda what near does too: everything is a factor to them, every tiny detail a new opening to optimize for the best results, every person and location and object a part of a puzzle waiting to be solved. and as a part of that, L is deeply aware of every and any little thing he may or may not have control over, and exactly to what degree.
his habit of stealing titles as depicted in the LABB murders novel is such a good example of this. ryuzaki, eraldo coil, deneuve. he eats people alive and then takes their names for himself like some kind of fucked up fae or trickster god, creating new masks and personas to hide behind from the remains of the people he's devoured. i have to wonder if he would've used the title of KIRA for himself had he won-- i can hardly imagine what kind of power such a title could hold if held in his hands. of course, he could've just used the defeat of KIRA as a way to build up the L title even further, offering up the body of a dead god like perseus showing off the head of medusa. but L is so emotionally attached to the kira case, i struggle to see him allowing it to fade from existence so thoroughly as near does, even if it is only kept close on a private level...
this is part of why i think it genuinely makes a lot of sense that L's ultimate win state would include capturing light to some degree. even if the memory of KIRA somehow manages to fully disappear from the public consciousness, there is no fucking way L is letting light yagami out of his grasp. honestly, the moment that L truly loses this game is not when he starts investigating misa while still under rem's watch, not when light gets back his memories, not even when he dies, but the moment when he allows light to be freed from the handcuffs. the moment when he allows the other members of the task force to turn off the cameras and keep him from watching light and misa talk in the lobby. the moment when he gives up, lets light yagami go outside of L's personal sphere of control, is the moment when L starts the clock ticking down to the end of his own life.
this is one of the key ways in which i see light as a true equal and parallel to L, as after L's death he, intentionally or no, continues the same tradition and takes L's title for himself, twisting the two sides together into the L-KIRA amalgamation. only, the L title functions a little bit differently than every other persona or title that we see in the series-- because L's true name is L. that's all that he is. on a literal, legal, and emotional level, i don't think that L is anything more than L. he is the world's greatest detective, he's an incredible, weirdo super genius, but he does not afford himself much more than that, barely allows himself personhood or humanity outside of his work. light was the one to ultimately defeat L because he did not just put a stain on his character (as BB attempted), did not just kill him, but stole his very identity and took it for himself.
one of the biggest contradictions of L's character that i think you must accept should you attempt to portray him accurately is that he is both deeply detached from humanity while also having all of his work and effort and life be focused around saving it. it's one of the ways in which he is an exact opposite to light-- where light relies on humanity for external validation, to be Seen, while also looking down on it as dumb and immoral and spineless, L is so separated from it that he barely exists as a person, all the while dedicating almost every action he takes to helping it. remember: for all the emotional turmoil that wammy's house and the legacy of L may put on the kids living there, ultimately it's entire existence is nothing more than L's logical solution to his potential demise. if he dies, the world goes down with him, all of the cases that are yet to happen and he is yet to solve being left in the air. he has the foresight to set up a fail safe, but not to consider the emotional implications of what being that fail safe might feel like, how high the price of your own humanity is if you are not already alienated from it, the inability to have your own name on your gravestone-- though perhaps some of the blame also falls on watari's shoulders in this case, philanthropic old bastard that he is.
imo, playing his game really got it right in presenting L and light as one and the same, synonyms on either side of the mirror. in every action they take they are both so selfishly selfless, playing the game for themselves and their own pleasure but plastering the needs and will of humanity on top of it. L isn't invested in saving humanity for the sake of humanity-- he just likes the thrill of having the stakes raised so high. hard to shit on ryuk for wanting entertainment when the humans he finds are just the same as him.

Random thoughts of alien!dogday and his human are plaguing my mind (Context and shameless self-promo ♡)
Imagine waking up to a faint green glow in the middle of the night and looking around for the source only to find its Dogday glowing from happily sleeping next to you 😭Bro would be such a snuggly boy finally happy to have some form of touch and interaction once again that he would refuse to let you even move from your position in his arms. PS pt.2 is done and, in the queue! I'm slowly trying to write again since my burnout is now ever so slowlyyyy going away! requests are open still, keep sending em in!

Reader who rambles about history the moment Trapper asks about the moon landing. You sitting on his chest as you enthusiastically talking about the space race and while yes he finds it fascinating, but there are words you're using that he knows nothing of. So he just staring at you with the lovesick eyes watching the way your body bounces as you enthusiastically describing the entire world holding their breath sitting around their TVs, he knew about those thanks to The Onryo and Hillbilly though he still remembered freaking out about it then. You just going on standing up on the bed quoting the iconic moon landing quote, "one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind."
"do humans live on the moon in your time?" Trapper asks with a big grin, it sounds so cool and to have humans finally able to travel to and from the heavens. Surely they did more then that. Your face dropping as you admit that in your time they had only done that once, but they are hard at work trying to get to Mars... Or at least corporations are. NASA's budget has been cut a lot, but hey you can explain the lesbian space crime incident and that some billionaire launched one of his cars into space just because he could. So that's something...
