Nakshatras - the Zodiac Signs of Vedic Astrology

The Nakshatras or Lunar Mansions are 27 divisions of the zodiac that represent constellations. Each nakshatra is represented by a star, and spans 13º 20' of arc on the ecliptic (the apparent path of the Sun). The nakshatras ahead of the ascendant are part of a person's birth chart, whereas those behind it belong to their previous life. Each sign is ruled by a planet and has a specific deity associated with it. These deities have been assigned as per the rules laid down in some ancient texts on Vedic astrology.

The names of the signs are derived by Sanskrit words based on this. For instance, Krishna is associated with Moola Nakshatra (Alpha Virginis), which is ruled by Mars. These deities have been described in ancient texts as being responsible for all events that occur during the day or night, at home or outdoors, and similarly the 27 nakshatras have been assigned to control various parts of our lives, said many astrologers. Put simply, the practice of dividing the zodiac into 27 equal parts and associating each with a deity began in India thousands of years ago and continues to be an important part of Vedic astrology.
