welcome to the thirty-first fic rec friday! where, on friday, i rec five of my favourite fics.

1. Skirt, Dirt, Worth by @ardett

Lance wants to see Pidge wear skirts and makeup. (But really he doesn’t.)

i know the description doesn’t give much, so you’re going to have to trust me. and i really truly do recommend this one. this one...it’s one of the first vld fics i read, actually, as it was early 2017, and i’ve only had the strength to read it once. it’s not that it’s traumatizing or gory or particularly hard to read except that it’s...heavy, is the word? it made my heart pound and my breathing go fast. i couldn’t...i was feeling absolutely everything lance was feeling and it was scary in the way being vulnerable is scary. it has influenced everything i have ever written. if you’re looking for really early team dynamics and a quietly emotional exploration of gender that will change your perception of it for eternity then i cannot recommend this enough. and i hope i will find the strength to read it again soon

2. putting it into words by @jilliancares [EXPLICIT]

Lance decides to bottom for the first time. (This one's so full of fluff that you MIGHT have the visit the dentist afterward.)

very soft and sweet and emotional! exactly what the description says, you go into this fic expecting something specific and you are satisfied by the end of it. jillian has always been and will always be very talented at exploring young, barely adult klance learning how to be with each other and be themselves.

3. Say Yes To The Mess by @astrolatte

"Keith?"

"Yes, Lance?"

"Is that a dead Altean boar on our front porch?"

"Yes, it is."

one of my fave post-war fics ever tbh. like this made me LAUGH. i love how awkwardly earnest and affectionate keith is, i love how many mean lesbians are included, i love keith & lance’s family, i love long suffering and endeared lance. the whole thing is a sweet and funny masterpiece

4. competitions by @jilliancares [EXPLICIT]

After a certain competition goes wrong, Allura tells Keith and Lance that they're not allowed to compete anymore. Naturally, they bring the competitions to the bedroom.

i love this one bc its so real. like of COURSE these losers would do this. and of course it would work for them. they are rivals first and foremost. rivals to lovers? no. they are rivals AND lovers. they are somehow something more homoerotic than rivals

5. teamwork makes the meme work by muuni 

Allura creates a groupchat for the newfound members of the Gender-Sexuality Alliance club at Voltron University. Everything goes downhill from there.

Hiya! I'm curious because you're able to juggle so many fics at once, what's your typical fic process look like? Do you write chapters in advanced and then schedule the release or post as you go? Also, how do you typically outline your stuff? 💗💗 Astro

Astrooooo definitely don’t write chapters in advance. Sometimes I’ll write rough-drafts of single scenes from later chapters, but never entire chapters. Reason being because my outlines are so fluid and susceptible to change. Sometimes I’ll be 90% finished with a chapter and suddenly be struck with OMG IT MAKES MORE SENSE TO WRITE IT THIS WAY INSTEAD and then it takes me a couple more days to re-write everything lol. So I don’t wanna be tied to a posting schedule for that reason. And my outlines are very basic. I literally just write out some vague scene descriptions in bullet point form, and move things/add things/remove things from there. Nothing fancy!

As for my typical process... First of all, just wanna preface this by apologizing if this makes zero sense LMAO. I’m gonna use my fic Something Blue as an example because I think that whole process was a pretty good representation of how I work. The very first thing that happened was that I saw this post on tumblr and thought OH MAN I WANNA DO THAT WITH KLANCE!! Then I started brainstorming things like: why would Lance need a fake fiancé? Why is his family coming to town? Basically ironing out details that will set things up for the main plot. From there, it was a lot of daydreaming about scenes/moments that I thought would be funny, cute, meaningful, angsty, etc. And the first ones that came to mind were: Lance and Keith meeting at the bar, Keith meeting the family at the airport, and Keith destroying Nyma’s paintings. For a while, all I had were those three scenes. Everything else sort of fell into place naturally when I started thinking about ways to connect those three dots. When I finally started actually writing, I only had about the first six chapters fully outlined. I didn’t even know how I wanted the fic to end yet! I knew vaguely, of course, that they were gonna end up together, but I had no specifics figured out. All of that came through writing the first half of the fic, so I had a better grasp of the plot flow.  

Again -- no idea if this process will work for anyone else, but it seems to work well for me, and my style. I hope this wasn’t too much of a mess vjkhvdfghdhr

Ahhh Astro you are so sweet!! Thanks!! I realize I’m not accustomed to thinking about things like these so... uhm, I’ll try!

1- I’m super resilient. Life has thrown some shit at me, but here I am, and it’s not easy to make me fall. I used the bad things as lessons to be not only stronger, but also more patient and overall kinder too (I was a little shit when I was younger).

2- I’m someone people rely on a lot, specially regarding their feelings. Like, you know, a vodka aunt who always has a nice piece of advice so people always asks and I’m always willing to lend an ear too. In my own friends’ words, I’m their “Jiminy Cricket” lmao.

3- I’m smart. It took me a while to truly believe it and then put it to good use, but I got there.

4- I’m a good cook. What? I’m proud of that! I like preparing food as much as I like watching people enjoy what I make.

5- I give great hugs! Certified by many people haha.
