Ashley Young hits out at Newcastle decision vs Aston Villa and reveals what referee told him
After Miguel Almiron had a goal-bound shot stopped by Ashley Young with his arm, Newcastle United scored the game-winning penalty. Young, the captain for the away team, was not pleased. Ashley Young, captain of Aston Villa, was sent off for an accidental handball in their 4-0 loss to Newcastle United, and Young has since complained that he is “not sure how you are expected to defend…

Natalia II
Hardersson x Daughter!Reader
Natalia Guijarro (OC) x Hardersson!Reader
Part of The Big Adeventures Universe
Summary: Talia and her obsession with your hands
Tumblr media
For as long as Talia can remember, she's noticed people's hands first.
Usually, it's as simple as a handshake.
You can tell a lot by people's hands, Talia thinks. If they're rough and calloused or soft or if they're big or small. The way people throw. The way they catch. The way that someone squeezes her hand slightly when they shakes.
There is a lot about hands that Talia finds interesting.
Yours especially.
She has different answers to questions depending on who asks. If someone asks her your prettiest feature, she'd say your eyes. If you asked her that same question then she'd say the way you smile when you see someone you love.
If someone asked her your hottest feature, she'd say your abs. She's not wrong. You have good abs, from all the sits ups and planks you do at training. If you were to ask her then she'd confess and say it was your hands.
You have large hands. A big palm topped off with long fingers. They're rough but not too rough, rough enough that on the occasions where you pin her down, she can feel each callous. They're strong too. Strong enough that you can dangle from the climbing wall with one hand and strong enough to squeeze her throat just how she likes when you fuck her.
They're a little bit veiny too, enough that she can see them clearly when you flex and Talia can always count on being distracted by them when you do weights.
Your hands are the most perfect hands in the entire world and she will die on that hill.
She'd noticed them when you first met all those years ago, pulling off your gloves to shake her hand. They'd been less rough then, less strong and less big but she'd still been impressed by them.
Still been impressed enough by you to go back to the hotel and watch your matches with Linköping again and again. Impressed enough to follow your career at Arsenal.
The birth of her secret fan account happened then. It started off as a burner Twitter account that had been sparked when against Aston Villa, you pulled off your gloves and ran a hand down your throat.
To this day, Talia can't thank that camera man enough for staying on you.
You'd dragged your entire hand down the expanse of your throat and Talia was treated to the slight flex of it as you curled your fingers around your own neck for reasons unknown.
Her burner Twitter account very quickly became a little shrine to you and your games that carried on even after you'd come to Barcelona. The TikTok account using the same handle had been born during the World Cup.
Talia hadn't really been expecting much when she randomly posted an edit about you but it had blown up a little bit and as Sweden's first choice keeper, she was given a lot of video footage to go off of.
There was even a shot of you at training with your team as they poured water all over you and you stripped off your shirt displaying your abs.
That had been a very popular edit.
"You're both quite popular on TikTok," Pernille mentions one evening over dinner.
You're all at home a day after a match, enjoying one last meal together before your parents fly home.
Prins sits at your feet happily, mouth open waiting for any food to drop while Reina lazes on the back of the sofa and Kung bounces around the room with a stick of celery.
"What? With the edits?" You ask," Yeah, I've seen a few of them. I think they're kind of cool."
"I don't." Magda, as always, sounds grumpy and Talia wonders briefly if she was this grumpy when you were growing up. "You're a baby. You shouldn't have people thirsting over you."
"I've not been a baby for a while," You reply but Magda just huffs.
"You're my baby," Magda insists," And I've had enough for edits showing up of your abs."
"She has good abs," Talia can't help but put in and she smiles as the tips of your ears turn red. Only for a flush to go through her body as you pick up her beer bottle and flick off the top with one hand.
It's unbelievably hot when you do that and you don't even know it.
"Of course you would say that," Magda replies before somewhat smugly saying," She got them from me."
Pernille rolls her eyes. "Yes, Magda," She says, slightly patronising," You have good abs too."
Talia would usually tease Magda for the way she turns red after the compliment but she's once again focussed on your hands as you easily lift Prins up onto your lap, your good boy wagging his tail happily at being included.
"It's the hand edits though," Magda continues," I just don't get the hand edits. They're just hands. I think I've saved one to show you."
Talia's heart drops as Magda shows the table what edit she's talking about.
It's one of hers.
Very clearly featuring a game a few weeks ago when you'd gotten uncharacteristically wound up and had fisted the shirt of an opposing play and dragged her away from you, pushing her further back to keep some distance.
Again, the camera man was a godsend because the image was still clear even as Talia zoomed in on your hands.
You watch the edit, unaware of the crisis that Talia's currently in next to you.
The caption is even more embarrassing.
'I'd let her manhandle me like that any day 🥵🥵🥵'
Just when Talia thinks it can't get worse, it does. Magda starts scrolling through the account and each caption is worse than the other.
'Just want her to pin me to the mattress 🥵🥵🥵'
'I'd love to have finger shaped bruises from her 🥵🥵🥵'
'I bet she spanks super hard 🥵🥵🥵'
You stare down at your hands in confusion, clenching and unclenching them as Talia tries very hard to stop the blush from her chest rising up to her face.
"Are they good hands?" You wonder aloud, brow furrowed. You turn them over to inspect before getting distracted with Prins trying to lunge forward to lick the sauce off your plate.
"They're reliable hands," Pernille replies before turning to her wife," God, Magda, it's just an edit. People are allowed to thirst over her hands if they want."
"No they're not! I won't allow it!"
"Unless you're going to cyber stalk the owner of the account, Magda, then there's not much else you can do."
A thoughtful look appears on Magda's face.
"No, Magda, you can't cyber stalk the account owner."
"But-"
"No."
The conversation, thankfully for Talia, is dropped and by the time Magda and Pernille leave for the airport, she thinks you've forgotten about it.
Out of nowhere though, you slip onto her lip, pulling her into a heady kiss.
Talia gasps into it when you slip your tongue into her mouth as one hand tugs her back by her hair as you have more access.
By the time you pull away, that hand has migrated to exactly where she wants it.
Wrapped around her throat.
"So," You say, whispering in her ear," You'd let me manhandle you any day?"
"You-?"
She can feel your grin against her skin. "It's the same username as that Twitter account you've dedicated to me."

Baby Fever
Tumblr media
Leah Williamson x reader
-> reader experiences Baby fever for the first time and does not know what to do with herself
-> Based on about a thousand pictures of Leah with Kids
➳ Masterlist
•─────⋅☾ ☽⋅─────•
Tearing her ACL in April had been horrible – and Leah knew that. But she also knew that she was mentally prepared to deal with it – she was in a good place and would come out even stronger. That was the plan, and now in June, just two months in, she had her surgery done and started rehab.
The blonde found herself having a lot more time on her hands now and she loved spending it with you and her family. While most of the world saw her go out with her best friend Alex, she came home to you – her wife for over two years now. She would not change her busy schedule for the world, even though there was a World Cup that she could not attend.
The defender relished the time she had with her family.
Together with her cousin Jordan, she had been working on a book, her second one but the first fiction book for children. While the beginning was slow, Leah busy with Match after Match a mountain of training in between – the process sped up rapidly after her injury.
In June they announced the release date – the 31st of August. Which was just a little bit short of three months away, plenty of time to finish writing it.
You had a couple weeks off as well – it was the summer holidays and the schools were closed, and you were bored out of your mind. Leah could not take your whining anymore, so she dragged you to Jordan’s house to babysit. Her husband, Rob, had to work and their one-year-old son was just as bored as you were.
The beginning was hesitant. While Jordan was lovely, how much fun could a one-year-old be?
Turns out, a lot of it. It had been hours by this point, from when Leah and Jordan removed themselves from the living room and moved into her office. Leaving you with little Henry.
When the two blondes emerged from the office, two more chapters done it was dark outside already – the cousins having lost themselves between the pages. Where Jordan expected complete chaos, she found a clean home with you resting on the couch, her little boy asleep on your tummy.
Leah’s heart melted.
She loved kids, especially the ones in her family, and while she knew that you wanted them as well – this was new. Usually, it was her holding the kids with you watching her with wide eyes, eager to see her in such a maternal role.
But now it was her turn to stare – and she could not help herself but imagine having a child with you. The drive home was calm with Leah’s heavy hand resting on your thigh while she drove – both of you deep in thought.
While Leah had a busy week coming up, you had a lot of time and you found yourself watching a bunch of TikToks of adorable little babies. All of a sudden, your usual shopping trip took a different route when you stumbled upon the kid’s section. Looking at one fuzzy romper after the other – tears in your eyes as the pregnant women were met with jealous stares from you.
You were lying in bed when Leah returned home from a night out celebrating with Alex, who promised you that she would look after the blonde. “Baby? Why are you still awake?” To your surprise, the blonde was completely sober and changed into comfy clothes before joining you under a soft blanket.
“Look at them, Lee!” You excitedly showed her your phone, a video of a baby meeting a cute little kitten.
“Very cute baby. But that is what kept you up?” You hesitated for a second before showing her video after video of little kids and babies until you finally fell asleep, the blonde gently took the phone out of your hand.
While your wife had no clue what had gotten into you, she loved it.
Aston Villa had beaten Arsenal 2-0 in one of the last games of the season. And while it had broken Leah's heart she was still there, supporting her girls.
Once the match was over the two of you had joined the teams on the pitch when a little blonde girl caught your eye. She was heading straight to you, making grabby hands with her tiny fists at you – so without much thinking, you hoisted her up onto your hips. “Leah!”
“I’m not Leah baby. You wanna go see her?” Big blue eyes stared into your soul and with just a little imagination you could see a little Leah in her.
You did not have to look very far to find your wife as she limped her way over to you. “And who are you, little lady?” The toddler however did not care about formalities and went straight to business
“Faster tan you!” A fake gasp left Leah’s lips at the words.
“I don’t believe you! I think we will have to race!”
And with that, you were made the race official, moving back a good distance, as you clapped into your hands.
The tiny blonde started making her way to you, Leah following her on her as well as she could. You could see in your wife’s face that she was in pain, yet she tried to make this as fun as possible for the young girl who she just knew had taken over your heart.
To no one’s surprise, it was the toddler who ran into your arms – winning the race. “Good job girlie!” With the girl back on your hips, you made your way over to Leah, rewarding her valiant efforts with a kiss.
About a million pictures were being taken right now but neither of you minded.
“Kimie!” The toddler in your arms had found her aunt, so the two of you said ‘bye-bye’ to Leah.
Katie just had to tease her vice-captain “Careful Lee, your eyes will glue themselves to ya missus!” The nudge to the blonde's side nearly made her fall over after the exhausting sprint. “Shut up McCabe.”
“Aww – grouchy. You jealous that it's not yours?” Leah knew that her friend referred to the toddler who did not want to leave her wife's arms, but she could not face that right now. “At least I still have a wife.”
Ouch. That hurt.
Back at your joined home, you could not stop talking about Kim’s niece, showing her picture after picture you had taken with the little girl. “What’s gotten into you baby?”
You knew it was coming, but you still tried to play dumb. “What are you talking about?” Leah took hold of both of your wrists in one of her hands, keeping you sat on the couch, stopping you from fleeing. The other hand found its way to your hair, stroking it gently, hoping to calm you down.
“Don’t play dumb baby. I found tiny shoes in our closet this afternoon. Shoes that are much too small for either of us.”
Your eyes roamed the room, desperate for an explanation when you found the first copy of ‘The Wonder Team’. “They’re for Jordan!”
But the blonde did not even have to say anything, already seeing your eyes tearing up. She pulled you on her lap, as you sobbed into her shoulder. “I- I don’t know what’s wrong with me. I jus couldn’t help myself.”
You were slurring your words together, making it hard to understand. Your wife however pulled out her phone and opened the period tracker she had for you. “Baby, you are close to ovulation. Your body is ready for a baby.”
But your crying did not stop, it just got worse.
“Yeah, b- but I don’t usually get like this.” Leah did not know how or what to answer, the last week had been exhausting on your mind so she just leaned back, positioning you in a way that you could hear her calming heartbeat as your swollen eyes started to droop.
“I jus wan a baby with you.” The footballer could not help herself but coo at your sleepy confession as she rubbed your back.
“I know baby – me too.”

baby pink
sydney lohmann x reader
apart of the baby pink series
Tumblr media
after winning against aston villa, your excitement couldn’t be contained.
as a center-back defender, scoring a golozo at arsenal had your team and the crowd blown in joy.
winning mvp for the match made you feel appreciated as well. this is your third season at arsenal and you've gotten this quite a lot, but your gratitude still shows.
as you're heading into the locker rooms, you look down at the pastel pink and baby blue kit over your body, the colors making you smile. baby pink and baby blue were your two favorite colors. so, having a kit in those colors– made exclusively for the women’s team too– made you happy.
after tonight, you’ll fly to germany  to visit your girlfriend sydney lohmann, who plays at bayern munich. your three-year anniversary was coming up and nothing could ruin your happy mood about it, not even the yellow card you received in the match.
after the match, exhausted but happy from the win, you scroll through the photos taken during the game by arsenal’s photographers. usually, they will send the photos in a big digital file.
one photo in the pink and blue kit made you look like a star. you were– but you wanted to post and highlight that picture immediately.

you giggled at all of the comments between you, your german friends, and your girlfriend. you miss sydney all of the time and can't wait to be with her.
there is a flower boutique down the street from your apartment, almost every week you'll receive a delivery of a bouquet of flowers. all from sydney-- and all pink.
sydney leaves the sweetest notes all of the time. you're grateful that your girlfriend makes an effort to show you how much she loves you from thousands of miles away.
you're enjoying the rest of your time at arsenal, since this is your last season. all of your fans don't know it yet, but some are suspecting that you'll join sydney in munich next year-- since there is no updates on a contract renewal with arsenal.
the next morning, you woke up to a knock at your door.
you groaned as you quickly rubbed your eyes and put your pink slippers on. walking out of the bedroom, you walked into the hallway into your living room to open up the front door.
the first guess of who could be at your door was caitlin and katie, who lived in the same apartment complex as you. sometimes, they come and eat breakfast with you because of how lonely you can get.
sometimes it feels like everyone on the team has a companion or partner, which leaves you feeling left out sometimes. luckily, you won't have to feel fomo for much longer with bayern's offer for you to join their club. thanks to references from sydney and georgia.
"hey cai-" your voice cut off when you saw a familiar face at the door.
a woman, early to mid 40s, named josie worked down at the flower boutique down from your apartment complex. she is a face you see every week at your door-- holding a huge pink bouquet.
"goodmorning josie." you smile as you, softly, take the bouquet of flowers out of her hands.
your hair was messy, considering that you gotten out of bed. however, josie has seen you looking worse during mornings where you're sick or tired from games the nights before.
"goodmorning, sydney got these for you." Josie smiled.
"yeah-- these are beautiful *sniff* and smell great too." you took a smell of the flowers. sydney got you pink flowers all of the time, just as you sent her red bouquets to her house in munich, but she changes the flowers up.
josie nodded and smiled at your observation of the flowers.
"i'm going to the airport soon to see her too-- so I'm surprised she sent me these." you commented.
"you shouldn't be-- its tuesday. have safe travels." josie says, smiling before walking away from your door.
sydney did send you your flowers every tuesday, which josie is right about.
you placed the flowers inside of a pink vase before pulling out the note card in the middle of the flowers.
"can't wait to see you later, honigbiene

First Of Many~Rasmus Højlund
Tumblr media
*GIF isn't mine. credits to the owner*
haven't been here for a while but when Rasmus scored i knew I had to write a fic for my baby @utdmount. Anyway, happy new year everyone I hope you all have an amazing year with your family and friends 💕
you can request from my prompt list
this is my master list
players/drivers i write for
People be wishing to be siblings with a football player, but no. y/n didn't really like the attention from being Diogo Dalot's sister.
Aside from that she hated the rules her brother had put regarding his teammates which are obviously 'you can't date any of them' or 'stay away from my teammates. they're trouble'. Obviously she didn't listen to him and befriended most of them. But a specific young Danish player caught her eye and had a soft spot in her heart.
After a few sneak outs and secret dates, Rasmus finally asked her out. They have been dating for about 2 months now, and of course without Diogo knowing. She didn't want to freak him out and thought that maybe he would try to break them apart.
He was always afraid she would get hurt, so he was overprotective when things come to his sister. Especially after the awful treatment they both had from their father and the trauma it had left in their lives.
The only part y/n liked about being a football sister was the free passes to the matches. So there she was at Old Trafford next to the wags of the Manchester United players. She was here as the sister, but secretly a wag too.
Yes she had the 'Dalot' jersey on, but her 'Højlund' one was in her bag for good luck. She knew Rasmus was struggling recently and that's the least she can do for him.
The first half of the match against Aston Villa was simply awful. The team conceded 2 goals in the first 30 minutes and the crowd was disappointed to say the least.
The last 10 minutes of the first half were a bit better as the team was more controlling and dangerously close to scoring at least one goal before half time. It didn't happen though.
y/n slipped out of the box and to the lockers where the players would be. Diogo was the first one to see her. He was confused but glad he saw her.
"hey what are you doing here?" he asked her, giving her a small hug
"just came to check on you and the guys. I know you will do better in the second half" she smiled softly at him. He smiled back before he was called by his coach. y/n's eyes scanned the room until they landed on a sulking blondie, a pout on his face and his arms crossed over his chest.
She smiled at his silly expressions and walked to him, looking over her shoulder to make sure her brother doesn't see her. She sat down next to him making him look up. He smiled quickly and sat up.
"what's with the pout?" she asked, making him sigh
"we were so bad out there. I don't know if the coach is even gonna keep me on the pitch anymore this match." his head dropped into his hands while his elbows rested on his knees. y/n looked up, noticing Diogo was out of sight. She placed her hand on his shoulder and rubbed it gently.
"you know that won't happen. The coach has faith in you and so do I and the fans. We know your time will come soon you just have to wait for your time to shine my love" she raised her hand to his wet hair, stroking his head with her fingers
He smiled up at her, laying his head on her shoulder. Her body tensed up a bit, but when she noticed they were the only ones left in the lockers she relaxed a bit.
"I'm gonna try to score for you" he mumbled, making her smile
"you better" she said jokingly making him smile
He got up and took a deep breath. She got up too, before he pecked her lips a few times.
He pulled away and smiled down at her
"for good luck" he murmured making her chuckle. She pushed him away slightly, the smile still on her face
He walked out of the locker room, while she aited for a bit before leaving too. As she stepped out of the room she saw Diogo standing there with raised eyebrows. Her heart dropped as she thought he heard or saw her and Rasmus inside.
"what were you still doing in there?" he asked suspiciously. She gulped looking everywhere other than his eyes
" I-I was just fixing my make up" she stuttered nervously
He eyed her body language, knowing that she was lying but he didn't say anything as the game was about to be resumed.
She let out a sigh of relief when he walked away after his name was called, but she had a feeling he'll be asking her more questions after the match.
She went back to the box where she was sat as the whistle for the second half was blown
It was an amazing second half. The first goal by Garnacho was an offside, but it only fueled the players more with the desire to at least get a draw.
About 10 minutes later Garnacho scored again. a real goal this time. Again, minutes after he scored the second. The atmosphere in the stadium was vibrant.
y/n was so excited that they managed to score two goals, but was a bit sad for her boyfriend. She still believed in him, until the minute 82. Man united got a corner.
After Bruno shot it, it reached one of the opponents defenders, but he didn't manage to quite control, leaving the ball in front of Rasmus. He shot the ball with all his strength and no hesitation.
It hit the post and then the net. y/n screamed from her seat. She started yelling with all the fans behind her and clapping as hard as she could.
She had tears in her eyes because of the pride she felt at the moment. Rasmus celebrated his goal with his teammates and his fans.
When he was left alone in front of the fans, he did a heart shape with his fingers and then y/n's initial after that. When y/n realized what was happening she smiled and blew him a kiss, only for him to blow her another one. She smiled widely and sat back in her seat, blushing furiously at this dedication.
The match ended with a brilliant comeback from the boys. y/n walked down with the other wags to the pitch. Running over to her brother. She was about to hug him tightly with a smile on her face, until she saw his furious expression.
"what the fuck was that y/n? you're really going out with Rasmus?! After i told you one hundred million fucking times that you're not allowed to date any of them?! you thought I would believe what happened in the locker? you two were in there alone! I'm not that stupid!" his yelling voice caught her off guard. The yelling only bringing back some memories that she didn't want to remember. Her dad.
When he used to yell and scream at her and Diogo. When he'd slam a glass or a vase on the wall right beside their heads. Her breath got caught up in her throat, her eyes tearing up while she placed her hand on her chest. Diogo didn't seem to notice it and continued his screaming fit.
But Rasmus noticed. He ran from where he was next to his parents to y/n. He knew all about her issues with her father. He knew all the trauma and fear he had caused to her. He pushed Diogo away and covered y/n's ears, pulling her into a deep hug.
"what the fuck Diogo? you know how she gets when being yelled at. Why are you doing this?" he said as calmly as he could. Diogo ignored him and continued his yelling
"who the fuck do you think you are?! you're fucking with my sister? really? that's so low of you! how could you?!" Diogo only raised his voice more, making Rasmus tighten his grip around his girlfriend that was still crying in his arms.
"please stop. for your sister not for me" Rasmus said in a calm voice.
Diogo's face softened when he looked at his sister, when he heard her low sobs into her boyfriend's chest. Only then he realized what he has done. Not only that, but he realized that Rasmus had managed to calm her down a bit, in a way he could never do.
"I'm sorry. oh my god y/n I'm so sorry. please forgive me" he tried grabbing her shoulder to make her look at him, but she only tightened her grip around Rasmus.
"I think it's best if you leave. you know she'll come around when she's feeling better" Rasmus said
Diogo was disappointed in himself but only nodded his head.
"I'm sorry man. I just realized how much you two mean to each other. And I'm sorry again y/n. I hope you forgive me" he kissed the top of her head and patted Rasmus' back, before walking away from them.
" hey sweetheart, let's go home shall we?" he said in a low calm voice. She only nodded her head and jumped into his arms, wrapping her legs around his waist and her arms around his neck, burying her head deep in her neck.

Hello brilliant friend! if you’re still playing that wip ask, and no-one has already asked, I would love to hear about ‘AC Milan’ and/or ‘Tear Me Apart’! (all of them sound amazing- how do you DO this!!??!!) 💚🌹💚🌹💚
Yes of course! And even if I wasn’t I could never say no to you :) Thank youuuuuuuuu (from this wip ask post)
AC Milan is when the team is playing their last Champions League match of the first round (away at you guessed it, AC Milan, they are my Serie A team) and they need to win to advance to the next round. There’s a corner and Jamie, Zoreaux and an AC Milan player all collide and are varying levels of injured. But the Greyhounds only have one substitution left and they need a goalie and Jamie doesn’t want to leave them playing with one less so he hides his injury and then obviously makes it worse.
He wasn’t as fast as he usually was, his cuts not as quick, but adrenaline was a hell of a drug.
It was injury time when it all fell apart. Jamie was racing down an AC Milan player, too delirious with pain to even fully tell who it was, Hernandez or Giroux; they both looked the same from behind with their blonde tips. Jamie reached them just as the player entered the zone, and he slid into the tackle, hitting the ball away, but fire shot through his hamstring, and someone screamed.
Jamie would later discover it was him.
Tear Me Apart is where Jamie tears his Achilles and it covers his recovery and working back to play.
“Don’t you need a fucking MRI or something to confirm it?” Roy asks.
The doctor shook his head. Jamie didn’t need an MRI either. He knew his body. And his body right now had betrayed him, given out on him. Roy looked ashen. Torn ACLs were commonplace. Horrible news, but it was something Roy had experience with. Achilles tears were less common. Fifteen years ago, it would’ve ended a career. Now, not always. Beckham had come back from one, and he was older than Jamie at the time. Someone on Aston Villa he thinks he remembered recently too. It would be a long road, but Jamie never shied away from hard work.

PRECIOUS LOVE CHAPTER 10: JAMIE TARTT x YOU
summary: you finally make some progress.
word count: 960 words
warnings: language
-
chapter 10: to be a better man
It took three days for you to think that maybe you deserved better. It started with Michael pulling you into a big hug when you told him you did not think it was going to work out. He went on to reassure you that there was a long line of fit footballers you could choose from because you were, in his words, “fit as fuck”. Then, the multiple messages from Rebecca and Keeley reminding you that you were brave and amazing. Finally, there were the flowers from the De Bryunes as a little cherry on top with a strongly worded reminder about what a wonderful person you were after you messaged Kevin and Michele a sincere and heartfelt apology for being so unavailable.
So, you decided it was time to properly invest in getting better. You had had enough of a go on your own without professional help and it had gotten you nowhere. Sure, you had travelled heaps around the various regions you had been assigned to while away and done some self-care as you had initially grieved. That had been great but then, hyperfocusing on work thereafter had definitely been counterproductive. While it was great that you finally had some semblance of a social life now, calling it progress was a bit of a stretch given you had been processing for four years albeit somewhat half-heartedly.
Seeing Dr Sharon was hard. There was a lot she had needed to set right in the initial sessions. There were a lot of tears and days spent holed up at home trying to grapple with all that had come to pass. But, as the sessions wore on, you could feel some light coming back into your life and the light at the end of a very long, very dark tunnel.
Slowly, you allowed yourself to be around more things football-related. First, it was Nelson Road for an actual in-person appointment with Dr Sharon. Dr Sharon suggested it and you were not about to shy away from the challenge after making as much progress as you had. Although you had spent the better part of 15 minutes hyperventilating outside before stepping foot into the facility, what mattered was you did. Sessions expanded to having lunch and drinks with Keeley and Rebecca in Rebecca’s office. Sure, part of the reason you had had lunch with Rebecca the first time was because you had heard ruckus in the locker room and seen players streaming out as you had started down the stairs so you had retreated to Rebecca’s office for safety. Yes, it might have been rooted in fear initially but being able to be at Nelson Road was progress in itself.
Then, you started attending games with Rebecca and Keeley. The first time, Richmond were playing Aston Villa away and you happened to be in Birmingham to visit a client. Given the meeting was scheduled for a Friday, you had decided to extend your trip to Sunday to give yourself a little bit of breathing room between train journeys. But, that was where the breathing room ended. The other director had taken to you and decided to make a weekend out of it with you as their unwilling partner (something about a bad breakup and ideal girls’ trip).
You: HELP PLEASE. She was chatting to me from outside the cubicle.
Rebecca: Oh god.
Keeley: don’t hate me babes but
Keeley: what about coming to the game?
You: can I sit in the back and scroll through IG the entire time?
You: you know what, doesn’t matter. She is trying to book us in for costume karaoke. I’m in.
You had originally said you would sit in the back and ignore everything going on but were quickly sucked into the spirit of it all. How could you not? It was an exciting one with Richmond kicking a goal to win it all in the last two minutes of the match. Being in and amongst it all had brought back memories, fond memories of attending Man City matches with the De Bryunes as an extra set of hands for the children. You realised in that moment that football was not as painful a memory as you had thought it would be now. So, when the next opportunity arose to join Rebecca and Keeley in the box, you took it and you remembered that look of pride the two had as they pulled you in for a hug when you had agreed.
Taking the step to actually joining in the team celebrations and being around the team took a little more. You had started making regular appearances around Nelson Road and at matches, enough to spark speculations amongst players about your identity. Did Keeley have a new investor? Maybe Rebecca’s personal lawyer?
Jamie sat in the locker room, overcome by a weird feeling of almost deja vu after catching glimpses of you in the hallways. He always managed to dodge you before you caught sight of him, thanks to the recent agility training he had been keeping up but seeing you stirred something within him nonetheless. He remembered the way you laughed and squealed whenever they won. He remembered the way you always hugged him when he needed it. He remembered how you would give him a thumbs up whenever he looked mad about something and how it made his frustrations disappear if only for a second.
“Oh, that’s who you’re talking about. Guess she must know Keeley and Rebecca too but she’s neither an investor nor a lawyer. She works with Michael,” Colin explained one day.
“Whatever her name is, she seems like a good bottle of Nebbiolo. Elegant, understated, well-liked and very, very good.”
Fuck Richard and his perfect fucking analogy, Jamie thought to himself.

https://theathletic.com/5469108/2024/05/07/premier-league-managers-touchline-fashion/?source=user_shared_article What are Premier League managers wearing on the touchline?
@doublefrogs @laisy @howeaythelads
Article text under the cut!
“Look smart, play smart”, as the saying goes. Perhaps it is about time we coined the phrase, “Look smart, manage smart” — and the meaning of “smart” is very much in the eye of the beholder.
In his first full season in charge — and despite two separate points deductions — Sean Dyche has steered Everton clear of relegation danger in the Premier League.
And what does Dyche credit as his secret weapon? Ditching wearing a traditional suit and tie for a club tracksuit, of course.
We’re not here to debate whether football managers donning classy business suits or comfortable matching sets of sportswear is superior. Instead, this feels like the perfect time to dive into what the Premier League’s movers and shakers are wearing on the touchline.
Want to imitate the Dyche look? (He’s cool enough to appear in music videos, remember.) The Athletic’s writers have got you covered.
Mikel Arteta, Arsenal
On matchdays, Arteta tends to dress in monotone — shades of black and grey. He frequently sports black shoes, grey trousers and one from a variety of black jackets. Black conveys seriousness and credibility — perfect for a manager striving to achieve his first Premier League title.
“At a high-performance level, you have to be consistent, things are demanding, you want to be detailed and precise,” Arteta told The Telegraph last year. “But at the same time, you need to leave some room for creativity.”
In those nervous moments of stoppage time, he occasionally glances down at a Rolex Oyster Perpetual GMT-Master II. The watch dates from 2007 — the year Arteta was voted Everton’s player of the year after leading them to European football.
Perhaps Arteta should consider introducing some camouflage to his match attire: it might enable him to evade referees when escaping out of his technical area.
Unai Emery, Aston Villa
Suave, sophisticated and all about the football. Emery’s fashion is largely dictated by the environment and the conditions he goes to battle in. At Turf Moor, for example, he broke out the rarely worn club tracksuit. When facing the managers he considers to be the best in the world, he wears sharp polished shoes and a long coat.
After an international break or in the summer, he has olive skin and a fresh new haircut. In the winter, he has a claret scarf, Roberto Mancini-like, tucked into a black puffer jacket and almost always accompanied by slim-fit trousers and a V-neck jumper underneath.
Nothing over the top, but adaptable. Best of all, it reflects him: highly effective in all conditions.
Andoni Iraola, Bournemouth
Iraola has delivered a penchant for those ‘pundit trainers’ — you know, the black shoes with the white rim around them. It forms a part of his smart but casual look, like a trendy university teacher who wears a blazer when walking between classrooms. He wears tracksuits at press conferences but invariably a neat black jumper with a button-up shirt underneath, with the collars tucked over.
He’s also adaptable, like his Spanish countryman Emery — and at Villa Park, Iraola broke out a neat blue jacket, adding a dash of pizzazz to the usual black trousers and pundit trainers. Not quite Scott Parker, but Iraola is learning.
Thomas Frank, Brentford
When Frank stepped up from his role as Dean Smith’s assistant to become Brentford’s head coach in October 2018, he took his promotion seriously.
Frank prowled around on the touchline in suits, crossing his arms when he was frustrated and looking like a teacher — which he used to be back in Denmark.
He quickly ditched the suits for something more comfortable and in the 2021 Championship play-off final, one of the biggest moments in Brentford’s history, he rocked up in a simple long-sleeved green T-shirt and dark trousers.
Nowadays, he jumps between wearing club-branded coats in chilly weather or plain black hoodies — comfort over style. On special occasions, The Athletic has spotted him in a blue-and-white pair of Nike Air Max.
Roberto De Zerbi, Brighton & Hove Albion
De Zerbi’s dress code has been more consistent than his team this season. Rain or shine, warm or cold, Brighton’s head coach brings Italian suave to the touchline with his matchday outfit.
It can be a hooded jacket, a round-neck jumper with the sleeves rolled up, or a T-shirt, depending on the vagaries of the English weather, but the colour scheme is always the same — black with tight-fitting black slacks and white trainers.
Vincent Kompany, Burnley
Kompany claims he pays no thought to his touchline attire in the build-up to games, although it is difficult to truly believe him as he marches to the dugout looking more stylish than most.
First impressions count, so when his side faced Huddersfield Town in his first game in charge back in July 2022, he donned a white shirt, black blazer — and, surprisingly, no cap.
Kompany’s cap has become the new iconic trend in Burnley. There is genuine shock when he appears without it on the touchline or when conducting media duties. The cap is an extension of him.
The classic Kompany look usually involves a variation of a big black coat and his unmissable white shoes. However, in the warmer months, underneath, the T-shirt and blazer combination returns — and this time with a cap on his head. Occasionally, the club’s training gear may be chosen. It’s not everybody’s cup of tea, but the Burnley manager pulls it off.
Mauricio Pochettino, Chelsea
No one can accuse Mauricio Pochettino of not trying to find the right outfit to bring about better results at Chelsea.
As far as head coaches and looking smart go, Jose Mourinho set the benchmark for all to follow in his two spells between 2004 and 2007, and 2013 and 2015. It is a bit like his silverware collection while at Stamford Bridge.
Pochettino has gone for the smart, suited look on occasion, although, like his mood after another poor result, the colours are always very dark. There has even been the odd tie attached.
Then, there is the training kit. Perhaps Pochettino dons it so regularly to boost sales in the club shop. Chelsea do have to find all the ways possible to meet profit and sustainability rules, after all.
He appears to quite like a football drill top, which has white down the arms — a rare bit of brightness in his Chelsea life.
Oliver Glasner, Crystal Palace
Last year, Crystal Palace appointed Kenny Annan-Jonathan as the first creative director for a Premier League club, but Oliver Glasner probably doesn’t need any fashion tips.
Glasner’s matchday attire is simple and understated. A trademark Canada Goose jacket with a black jumper and black jeans, coupled with a pair of white Nike Air Max Plus (better known as Air Max TNs).
It contrasts markedly with the garish orange-and-black Macron kit that is usually donned at the training ground.
The 49-year-old has attracted attention for his change in playing style at Palace, but his fashion style is also a complete departure from previous manager Roy Hodgson and the iconic shorts worn by former assistant Ray Lewington, no matter the weather.
Sean Dyche, Everton
Dyche has said his mother “isn’t too happy about it”, but the emperor has new clothes and Everton are winning points.
Dyche has always managed in a suit — nothing spectacular, no subterranean polo necks, no avant-garde lapels — but Everton’s form was nose-diving. They were winless in 13 league matches, plummeting back towards the relegation zone, and Dyche’s man-management seemed to be losing its touch.
Reaching deep into his box of motivational tricks (or by listening to Michael Jackson), he began, suitably, with the man in the mirror, switching to a tracksuit for Everton’s must-win showdown with Nottingham Forest on April 21.
“I always thought it was correct to wear a shirt and tie, but I just thought I’d play my part in what I was looking for from my players and staff,” he said post-match.
Since then? Four games, no defeats, and Everton’s first derby win at Goodison Park since 2010. It has been the best week for shell suits since the 1980s.
Will he continue? “I have to,” he said last week, with the air of an ageing steel magnate on dress-down Friday. “I have no choice.”
Marco Silva, Fulham
Fashion seems to be important these days at Fulham. It is ‘on brand’ to look upmarket and stylish.
The club have leant into that affluent stereotype: just look at the sales of cheese boards in the club shop (purchased by fans for away days with more than a hint of irony, obviously). They have also established a partnership with male fashion brand Charles Tyrwhitt, which has a line called the ‘Fulham Look’. Marco Silva is not one of the models for that collection, but managers do need to look the part in south-west London.
His predecessor, Scott Parker, was never one to shy away from eye-catching knitwear. Silva is more low-key. He is a man of darker tones and a sharp and simple look, suggesting a seriousness that reflects his character.
He mainly wears black jumpers, sometimes opting for a turtleneck or a grey option, and often a big black coat in the rain and cold. Smart black shoes go with that, but he can and does switch to trainers and training gear. A smart or stylish watch is a must, though.
Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool
For Klopp’s farewell season at Liverpool, it’s been the trusted casual tracksuit attire we’ve become accustomed to seeing over his nine years in the Premier League.
At the start of the season, for the opener away at Chelsea, it was just a black Liverpool T-shirt with club tracksuit bottoms, a baseball cap and white Adidas trainers, the brand with which he became a brand ambassador in 2020.
As the weather turned, Klopp paired the above combination with a red-and-grey hoodie and had either a tracksuit top or a long raincoat over the top for the winter months. He’s sometimes added a snood for the really chilly games.
He has kept the club Nike baseball cap on all season — with his choice of colour the main fashion change-up.
In an interview with the Guardian in 2020, Klopp explained why he’s always kept it casual. He said: “I was a player and the next day I was the manager (of Mainz).
“In my locker room was the tracksuit of the guy who had the job two days before. It didn’t even fit me. I was just focused on the game. I never thought about how I looked. I know it’s not too cool because we are working in public, but then when I came to Borussia Dortmund, I thought: ‘Maybe I have to change’. I went for a while wearing jeans and a shirt but I just didn’t feel comfortable.”
Rob Edwards, Luton Town
Who remembers the Next catalogue? Every matchday, it looks like Rob Edwards has walked right out of it.
Edwards has the three-quarter zip jumper look locked down. His Luton team are in the relegation zone with two games to go, but he is top of the league when it comes to best-dressed managers.
Are you even a football manager if, when you open your wardrobe, you aren’t suddenly drowning in Sandbanks coats? Edwards certainly enjoys repping the brand, which has Jamie Redknapp as its ambassador, and he does so with style.
Edwards’ recent look for Luton’s away trip to Wolverhampton Wanderers was his best of the season. He wore something similar on a scouting trip to Molineux a few days earlier but rounded off the fit with a pair of clear-frame glasses. When it comes to manager fashion, he is clear.
Pep Guardiola, Manchester City
At the Etihad Stadium, high-end fashion and high-end football collide.
Guardiola has long been one of the most fashionable managers out there and his sensibilities have matured over the years to a point of pristine quiet luxury.
Gone are the ice-white trainers of old, replaced by chunky black derby shoes. Gone, too, is the bulky grey coat-cardigan hybrid, made by Italian brand Herno, that became his calling card a few seasons ago — although Guardiola is still partial to the odd piece of cosy, statement knitwear.
Once keen on Stone Island — although he sometimes removed the brand’s signature arm tag — the Manchester City manager is now more likely to be seen sporting CP Company, which is handy given the Italian luxury brand is set to become his club’s official Champions League clothing partner next season, replacing Dsquared2.
Erik ten Hag, Manchester United
Every Manchester United manager needs a big coat for when it rains at Old Trafford. This season has seen Ten Hag wearing a raincoat from Norwegian brand UBR. He appears to be a fan of UBR’s black Storm jacket, which retails at around €800 (£690; $860).
On matchdays when it isn’t raining, the Dutchman is fond of a black blazer from Spanish clothing company Adolfo Dominguez, pricing at around €300.
Recent weeks have seen him opt for a Paul Smith suit and cardigan combination — the English designer has been a club partner since 2008.
Despite these big names, you would be unlikely to say Ten Hag is a fan of luxury and designer clothing. The more sartorially minded might have spotted his suits had an off-the-rack look and seemed boxy around his lean shoulders. Ten Hag is most at home in a tracksuit but can dress up when the occasion calls for it.
Eddie Howe, Newcastle United
The most important factor in determining Howe’s pre-match attire? Well, that would be whatever Jason ‘Mad Dog’ Tindall, his Rottweiler-esque assistant coach, is wearing.
The Premier League has introduced a technical-area rule in an attempt to break up the perpetual Howe-Tindall pitchside axis, but to little avail.
They remain a tenacious touchline act, apparently attached at the hip and yet wearing suitably discernible outfits. If Tindall has gone for the black with green logo, then Howe will inevitably select the black with yellow logo. If their colour theme is consistent, one will opt for a hoodie and the other for a zippy top. Why they always dress differently, nobody seems to know.
And by outfits, we mean tracksuits, hoodies and training T-shirts. There is never a suit in sight unless there is respect to be paid to a deceased monarch pre-match, in which case it is hastily whipped off in the tunnel before kick-off anyway and the slack pants are restored. Comfort is essential when watching this Newcastle side, after all.
Nuno Espirito Santo, Nottingham Forest
Since his unveiling at the City Ground, Nuno has been unwaveringly consistent in his attire.
Blue Adidas tracksuit bottoms, blue Adidas training top or hoodie and, if it is cold, a blue Adidas puffer jacket. Nuno has, on occasion, gone crazy and gone for white Adidas trainers, but normally (you’ve guessed it) they are also blue.
As a head coach, Nuno is fiercely practical. He does not want to waste time with the peripheral duties of his job. He only wants to work with his players on the training ground. Anything else is a distraction. You suspect his choice of clothes represents function over form.
Chris Wilder, Sheffield United
During his first spell in charge at Bramall Lane, Wilder’s sartorial look was the very antithesis of his team. Where United played an innovative system featuring overlapping centre-backs that left the opposition unable to predict just where the next attack would be coming from, he stuck doggedly to sporting a gilet. Come rain, hail or shine, the ubiquitous garment was there.
So, when his second coming in the United dugout last December saw the 56-year-old sport a rather smart winter coat, suit pants and shoes so shiny the suspicion was he had been up all night polishing them, it didn’t quite feel right.
Thankfully, in time, the gilet returned, along with an array of club-branded sportswear to restore a degree of reassuring familiarity.
Ange Postecoglou, Tottenham Hotspur
Postecoglou began his time in north London by wearing a casual polo shirt. However, as summer gave way to autumn, he started to wear warmer clothes and settled on a suit and tie combination. Initially, this felt a little unnatural, but everyone has gradually grown used to it.
Postecoglou occasionally pairs the suit with trainers or the footwear known universally as ‘pundit shoes’, but generally, he wears smart black ones and has switched between a smarter coat and an official club sporty number.
The overall impression is of a man giving the minimum of fuss. It’s just who we are, mate.
David Moyes, West Ham United
Since returning to the helm in December 2019, Moyes has kept his choice of clothing on matchdays simple and traditional.
He often wears a dark grey West Ham-branded Umbro tracksuit, with Umbro trainers.
Sometimes, the occasion calls for a plain, dark jumper, but also, sometimes Moyes will wear a suit, pairing a powder blue shirt with a claret tie to leave few doubts over the club he’s managing.
There are a few quirks when it comes to the clothing chosen by one of the Premier League’s most experienced managers.
Gary O’Neil, Wolverhampton Wanderers
Let’s be honest, there was not much about Wolves last season that was interesting, but Julen Lopetegui’s fashion choices certainly added a bit of intrigue.
Of the 26 matches he spent on the touchline as Wolves boss — he was banished to the stands for his final game in charge at Arsenal — the Spaniard managed an exact split, 13 games each, between a tracksuit and stylish chinos-sweater combo.
Yet the success rate in chinos (seven wins, three draws and three defeats) was so much better than in his tracksuit (three wins, two draws and eight defeats). It is remarkable he did not have a ceremonial burning of the sportswear.
In comparison, his successor, O’Neil, has been boringly predictable in his black hoodie, black trousers, black trainers and occasional black anorak.
But then, the football this season has been watchable, so swings and roundabouts…
