My art summary for this year! One standout piece for each month... so it was a little maddening when I had one month with a bunch of good pieces and then a few months (october...) where I did almost nothing

Hogan's Heroes, somehow, is still in the lead of my most prolific fandom! Given how deep I've been into the MXTX novels lately I thought it would have been overthrown, but nope, Hogan's Heroes still wins first in my heart this year apparently!

Hey I just have a tip for fanfiction writers if you use (~)or(-)or(*) as page breakers don't use more than two or three because screen readers actually read out these punctuations and I cannot tell you how annoying it is to be reading the story then all of a sudden be hit with a whole bunch of asterisk Asterix Asterix asterisks Asterix Asterix

Then: I was a kid in the '80s and a teen in the '90s. I watched Nickelodeon, the Disney Afternoon and Cartoon Network, and wrote fanfiction and RPGs about it with my friends in a spiral notebook. 😆 I studied English and art in college and love to write and draw.

Now: I do communications and social media for a large U.S. retail company. Wish I had more free time to write and create for fun. My goal is to carve some time out soon to start making and posting my own stuff again. Until then, exploring your creations brings me lots of joy.

Me: I'm just gonna summarize the basic plot points from Asterix pov after he got hurt in God save Britania so I can get to what I wanted to write. Like in my whump fanfic based on mansion of the gods.

Also me: Includes every Asterix scene in the second half of the movie as a soft rewrite with his injuries and him not being able to deal with his own emotions.

I finally reached the fight against the romans at the end of the movie. Which means I am not done with my soft rewrite of the movie plot part yet. I have over 5k words now. I'm debating if I should have just rewritten the entire movie from Asterix pov at this point.

I am nowhere near writing the scenes I wanted to write. TT

Anyway. The Oneshot now turned into a two shot. Not for pacing reasons, though it makes sense for pacing at this point as well, but so I actually have reason to return to it in case of a writers block. This just turned way longer than I thought it would.

Accessible Scene Breaks

My fanfics are specific, because they consist of several seperate scenes in each chapter. For example, my Star Trek fanfic is written in a way resembling scenes in the TV series. That requires marking the scene breaks and I wanted to do it in an accessible way.

The common advice is to simply use the horizontal line (hr in html). However, unfortunately not all screen readers and text-to-speech programs actually read it in a meaningful way. Some read it as a pause that is only slightly longer than a normal pause between paragraphs and thus is almost unnoticeable.

While using many characters instead of the line is inaccessible (if you write twenty “X” instead of the line, the readers might read it as “ex-ex-ex… twenty times), some reader users prefer to hear up to three characters indicating a scene break. For example, three asterixes are commonly used in both the internet and printed books. However, some readers ignore it too and also fanfiction.net refuses to save it.

And there’s also a factor of making the fanfiction accessible not only to fully abled people and not only to reader users, but also to people with i.e. dyslexia or some attention disorders who might need visually distinguishable scene breaks.

Eventually, I decided to use a few things:

The built-in horizontal line—to make the scene breaks visually noticeable, to help navigate the text and to lengthen the pause.

Words—date or simply “later”—to inform the reader or the reader user that the new scene starts. The text is bold and italic to visually set it apart from the normal paragraphs.

Ellipsis—before and after the word to visually differentiate it from the normal paragraphs and to lengthen the pause. The ellipsis isn’t bold.

What would you consider your first fandom, and how long ago did you join it? And on a scale of 1 to 10, how much brainrot do you still have for it?

while the first stories I got into were like. Tintin and Asterix and a lot of the shows I watched as a kid, what I would actually consider my first fandom was Harry Potter. I was obsessed with it right at the age I was spending more time on the internet and I was looking up "harry potter stories" and "harry potter art" before I knew it. I even had fanfic ideas for it before I even knew fanfiction was a thing you could do. and that was how I discovered fanfiction.net and it all snowballed from there.

on a scale, it's probably about a 2? because I'm pretty over it now but sometimes I'll still want to rant about it or something related to it, or go through some tags and see what's going on. there's still some good stuff out there.
