Brentley — Landon’s — mouth always got him in trouble. Whether it was at school or at home with his parents or siblings, Landon’s loud, unfiltered mouth always got him in trouble. It wasn’t like he went out of his way to be blunt or be a shit to people, it just… happened, and he always ended up on all of his teacher’s bad sides for it. He didn’t understand what it meant and didn’t care enough to read up on it, only taking his medication because it was an obligation. Though he felt unlike himself after taking it, he finally understood what it was like to be calm and to be able to pay attention in class and not stay after school so his teachers could spell things out for him.

Landon’s mouth always got him in trouble. Though his medication helped him tone it down, he was still a little flirt who enjoyed the company of the opposite sex a little too much. When he was an eighteen year old senior in high school, he ended up flirting his way into a teacher’s assistant’s good graces… and bed. She was twenty-one. It wasn’t like it was illegal — at least that’s what he told the administration once they found out about their tryst. The teacher’s assistant was promptly fired and he was also promptly expelled from the school he was attending. That was fine by him, though. School was never really a priority of his.

After getting his GED instead of a high school diploma and even though he’d enrolled at Bluegrass Community & Technical College in his hometown, Landon decided to take a break from going to school. After the ‘TA fiasco’, he knew he needed to get away, and so he did – traveling all over the US on little gas and almost no money. Somehow, a few months after leaving Danville, he ended up in Boston, Massachusetts, picking up jobs as a dishwasher and busboy and racking up enough money to get a small shoebox apartment that cost too much for the quality of living; but he didn’t care. He loved it there, loved the change of pace from Danville.

Landon’s mouth ended up getting him out of trouble. Though he was far away from Kentucky, and a mere 19 year old with no experience, Boston was still home to one of the most prestigious music schools — Berklee. It took an entire year of him trying his damnedest, failing every requirement time after time until he was able to pour his heart out during an interview. There, he used his lack of filter to tell the administration that though he didn’t care for much, he cared about music and was passionate about it and that though his record was alarming, he would try his damnedest to excel. It took some time, another interview and a few more auditions later, but he was officially accepted to Berklee at age 20. Everyone he knew and was close to had always wanted for him to be passionate about something, anything, and they knew he was serious and passionate about music. They only hoped that he would excel, and excel he did. Even though the days were long and arduous and he had to work late nights as a bartender in order to afford anything, he loved every second of it. Music was his calling.

Landon’s mouth will always get him in trouble. After graduating from Berklee and becoming someone people were proud of knowing, Landon began pursuing a career in music. Nothing came out of it, though — he was a 24 year old with an incredibly large debt that came from his student loans, someone talented who couldn’t keep his mouth shut, and someone who was passionate and had the chops for making it big. The only thing was, that someone was always better than him. Every time, someone would beat him to it, even when he kept his mouth shut except to sing. After a year or so of the same thing, of struggling to maintain a job and kickstarting a career, he was fed up. At a bar one night, he got into a fight — what started as something small after someone spilled a drink on him turned into a brawl. That night, Landon ended up behind bars and did extra time for being drunk and berating the police officers there. He could never shut up. It was then that Landon knew he needed to turn his life around.

Again, Landon’s mouth ended up getting him out of trouble. Even though he was 28, had no job, little experience outside of working at restaurants and lifeguarding at hotels in the summer, still needed to pay back thousands of dollars to Berklee, and had a record for being unruly at bars and ending up in jail — many things that would’ve deterred anyone’s will to keep going forward, Landon was different. Landon knew he needed a change of pace and to build a life elsewhere. With little money, he left Boston and ended up in Miami, Florida. There, he was a different person. There, nobody knew him and he could be himself — goofy, adventurous, a little talkative, charming, still a little menace. Quickly, Landon got in people’s good graces and had two jobs that allowed him to have a great life and still save up to pay back his four years at Berklee.

Even though his life was great in Miami, Landon heard through the grapevine about a cruise that could probably change his life for the better. There, he could be out on the ocean for a year, working jobs that he knew he excelled at, and in the end, be mostly out of debt. It was a no brainer for him. McKinley Cruise Line would change everything for the better.

THE WESTON FAMILY BACKGROUND

The Weston’s didn’t have a lot of money growing up, that’s true, but they did have a lot of happiness. They had caring parents who would do anything for their kids, and who loved unconditionally. Back from the brink | Local News

DANVILLE — Emily Klose of Champaign didn’t plan on attending her 40th high school reunion last fall. But a friend told her: “Just go and expect something great to happen.”

She did — and that simple act sent off a chain reaction from California to Danville, changing the life of an area veteran.

“It was serendipitous,” Klose said. “It’s a ridiculous and crazy story.”

Thanks to her talking about Mission K9 Warrior, classmate Carl Chow made a donation of $5,000 — which was matched by his employer — to buy and train a service dog. That dog went to Sean Conner, a Marine who suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder.

“I think the dog pulled Sean back from the brink,” Klose said.

Conner, 36, was in Operation Phantom Fury, which was the major push for the insurgent stronghold of Fallujah. To date, it was the bloodiest battle of the Iraq War, he said.

Having George — a part wolfhound — by his side has made a big difference.

“My quality of life has increased drastically because of all the care and passion that everyone involved devotes to this program,” he said.

Mission K9 Warrior is administered by the Georgetown American Legion Dornblaser Post 203. Eight dogs have been paired with veterans since service officer David Hughes founded the program in 2017.

The name of the program is trademarked and unique among American Legions across the country.

KLOSE, CHOW ENCOUNTER

The tragedy of veterans with PTSD committing suicide hits home for Klose. Her husband, Jim Washburn, a Vietnam veteran who was in the Air Force, took his life on Sept. 26, 2012.

After her husband died, Klose wondered what she could do to honor him, and learned about Mission K9 Warrior.

Because her husband was a big dog lover, she and her family launched the Jim Washburn Living Legacy Service Dog Fund in 2017. Conner is the second recipient of a dog through that fund.

Last September, Klose decided to attend her Rich Central High School reunion in Olympia Fields. Also attending was Chow, a mechanical engineer with Hewlett-Packard labs in California. The two also had attended the University of Illinois, but Klose said they hadn’t seen each other in 30 years.

Klose told him about her husband’s death and gave him an article to read about Mission K9 Warrior.

Upon his return to Fremont, Calif. he and wife, JoAnn, decided to make a $5,000 donation toward a service dog. He also took advantage of Hewlett-Packard’s plan to match an employee’s contribution to a charity up to $5,000. That added up to $10,000, which is the cost to find, buy, train and maintain one service dog.

It took a while for the funds to go through, Klose said, adding, “It was a five-month odyssey to get the matching funds.” They had to go through American Legion Charities, Inc., and the deal was finalized in February.

Chow, who likes to stay in the background, said, “I’m glad to help out. If this motivates someone else to help …”

Chow had researched Mission K9 Warrior, and decided it was a worthy cause, and is pleased that the program is doing so well. He’s also a dog lover, and has an 11-year-old mixed breed.

CONNER’S STORY

Conner received his dog, George, during a graduation ceremony in April at Paw-a-day Inn K9 Suites in Tilton. Owner Tony Piatt trains dogs through his Midwest Professional Canine Services.

A native of Tuscola, Conner spent four years (2001-05) in the infantry with the Marine Corps and was deployed to Iraq.

After service, he returned to Tuscola and attended college. Since graduating in 2008, he has struggled to maintain steady employment, and is constantly haunted by PTSD issues.

A few years ago, Conner adopted a dog who had been abused.

“We were inseparable. We would both lay awake at night and suffered from nightmares,” he recalled. “She quickly became my battle buddy, but I didn’t know how much she helped me until she became ill herself.

“After many veterinary visits and referrals, she was diagnosed with Cushing’s Disease and all I could do was watch as another best friend died.”

After a time, he decided to look into the process of getting a service dog. The only places he could find were in Chicago or southern Illinois.

By then, he had secured employment with the Veterans of Foreign Wars as an assistant department service officer.

“Basically, I work with and help veterans, many of whom share similar experiences with me,” he said.

Conner then heard a radio commercial requesting donations to a fund that helps veterans. That month, funds were going to the Georgetown American Legion and Mission K9 Warrior.

Conner found an application on the website, and was called to an interview within two days. At the time, there was a dog in training and Conner was told he would be paired with the dog when he reached a certain point in his training.

“I met with the trainer (Carolyn Daniel) and we talked about my triggers, or what causes me to react adversely,” he said. “This was difficult for me to discuss, but necessary, as she needed to teach the dog what to react to.”

After meeting with Daniel a few times, Conner got to meet George.

CARING CANINE

“George is a very loving and caring dog. Training with George seemed natural from the beginning. We got along very well,” he said.

“After the training was complete between George and myself, I got to take him home and he has been by my side most of the time since then.”

When they are in crowded areas, George pushes up against Conner as if to say, “It’s OK.”

“When I’m at home and if I can sleep, he wakes me up when I have nightmares.”

In public, Conner has had some issues with people asking if he’s actually a service dog.

“I believe this is because most people do not know the difference between service dogs, comfort dogs and therapy dogs,” he said. “They are all extremely different and George is an ADA-recognized service dog, able to go almost anywhere. He is a very well-behaved, and very well-trained animal.

“I have a huge respect for the entire program and the team that Dave Hughes has brought together, between the American Legion, Mission K9 Warrior and Midwest Professional K9 Services.”

Conner said he has passed out David Hughes’ business card to many veterans with similar backgrounds.

Conner also said, “I want to give a special thank you to the people that donated to make this possible, especially (Klose) who donated in honor of her late husband.”

GROWING PROBLEM

David Hughes, service officer with Post 203 and a Coast Guard veteran, founded Mission K9 Warrior in 2017 when he learned the average rate of suicide among veterans nationally is about 22 a day.

“I think there’s a great need out there,” Hughes said. A lot of veterans are troubled with PTSD, but they think it makes them appear weak to admit it.

“Eventually, it can eat away at you,” he said, adding he hopes veterans take advantage of programs, such as at the VA, to get the help they need.

The cost of buying and training a service dog has gone up to $10,000 from $7,500. That’s still a discount, Hughes said, as it can cost up to $40,000 in some places for boarding, training, veterinary care and other services.

As for the veterans who have received the dogs, Hughes said, “Everybody seems to be doing well. The dogs have been a real blessing for them.”

Benefits of Therapy You Probably Didn’t Know About

Many of us have a narrow view of therapy. We think it’s solely for navigating clinical depression or severe anxiety or roller-coaster moods. We think it’s only an option when we’re going through a major crisis, a big transition, or a prolonged, persistent period of grief. We think therapy is only an option when relationships become disconnected, and marriages are on the brink of divorce.

While therapy is important and vital for all the above, it’s also helpful for a lot of other reasons, and you don’t have to wait until the walls are falling down to work with a clinician. You can go when the paint is chipping—or when you’d like a different color on your walls.

In other words, therapy offers a broad array of benefits for all of us, whatever our circumstances, conditions, and concerns. Below, you’ll learn about four of these—often glossed over, forgotten about, not widely known—key benefits.

Therapy can reduce physical symptoms and boost your physical health. According to Brooke Lewis, PsyD., RCC, a registered clinical counsellor in the greater Vancouver area and co-founder of the Mental Health Boot Camp, clients can experience reductions and improvements in different physical symptoms associated with stress.

This might include a “reduction in migraines, reductions in digestive troubles, improved sleep, or improved appetite.”

For instance, Lewis worked with one client who was struggling with symptoms of anxiety and depression. She also was having ongoing digestive problems, frequent headaches, and regular cold sores. Through their work together, this client was able to identify and process painful emotions and learn strategies to soothe her nervous system. She also noticed her physical symptoms had diminished and become more infrequent. And she learned to spot these physical symptoms early so she could intervene early, and turn to various stress-relieving strategies and techniques.

Vancouver psychotherapist Chris Boyd, MA, also has found that therapy can boost physical health—and reduce the risk of future medical issues. “Research has shown that treating mental health conditions through therapy can decrease the risk of stroke, diabetes, and rheumatoid arthritis. It can decrease inflammation and blood pressure within the body,” he said. (This Time article features some of the science.)

Therapy goes beyond survival to enhancing your life. “It can help people develop and foster passion, productivity, and balance in their lives,” said Boyd, also co-founder of the Mental Health Boot Camp. For instance, he recently worked with a man who was struggling with procrastination and sinking motivation. With Boyd’s help, the client discovered that these feelings and behaviors were actually a defense mechanism he developed earlier in his life to protect him from disappointment.

“Helping the client build awareness of these patterns and respond differently in those situations assisted him with enhancing his performance at work and at home,” Boyd said.

Therapy can help you work on all kinds of goals and dreams—creating a specific plan, navigating potential internal and external obstacles, and bolstering your confidence and resilience. These goals and dreams might be anything from building a small business to becoming more self-compassionate to asserting yourself at work to cultivating a close relationship with your kids.

Therapy helps you untangle years of confusion and turmoil—and change unhealthy patterns. Eric Hotchandani’s clients regularly tell him that they “woke up one day in their mid 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, or 60s, and their life had just happened to them.” They wonder everything from how they became so unhappy in their relationships to how they became so unsatisfied with their lives.

Hotchandani, who has a private practice in Danville, Calif., has found that people fill their lives with things that aren’t fulfilling, which creates dissatisfaction. “And in that sense, their identities and purpose in life [are] filled with confusion,” Hotchandani said. “When these patterns of confusion emerge, often time negative thinking patterns follow and can become deeply embedded in their personality.”

These negative thinking patterns might be anything from “I am not good enough” to “I deserve to feel this (negative) way,” he said. Inevitably, this confusion ends up hurting relationships, too.

Hotchandani noted that in therapy clients explore these patterns, discover their origins and fear-reaching effects, and enact change, one step at a time. “[I]t is amazing how small changes can build upon each other and lead to positive revolutions in our lives.”

Therapy helps you explore your hidden desires. Therapy “brings the benefit of a broader awareness to life, to not get wrapped up in a single way of living life, to explore healthy self-expression in ways that perhaps a person had been hiding from themselves,” said David Teachout, LMHCA, a psychotherapist who joins with individuals and partnerships on their mental health journey to encourage a life of valued living and honest communication at his practice in Des Moines, WA.

For instance, Teachout has worked with clients who isolate themselves because they’re afraid of rejection, shame, or loss—all of which can happen when pursuing relationships and intimacy. But instead of keeping these clients safe and satisfied, the isolation sparks “a different level of suffering precisely because they actually do want to have those relationships and intimacy.” By helping clients realize this desire for intimacy, Teachout can then help them to explore it—and work on cultivating connected relationships with others.

In other words, we might run from the very things we yearn for—without even realizing it—because we’ve created various catastrophic stories, because we were shattered by someone or something in our past.

Therapy helps us to explore these deep desires and profound fears—and get past them, so we can create truly satisfying, fulfilling lives.

Ultimately, many of us don’t ever take the time to actually look into who we are and how we became that way, Hotchandani said. Ultimately, we don’t take the time to envision the person we’d like to become—and “most importantly, transcend that vision.”

“So many people have never had an opportunity to really talk about themselves in a safe, nonjudgmental space where their life’s story is front and center. This idea, though quite simple, is transformative.”

When many people think of seeking therapy, they do so quietly, and often with a lot of shame. I can’t believe I need this, you might wonder. Has it really come to this? you might say to yourself.

It takes courage and strength to seek therapy. As Hotchandani said, it is something that “should be celebrated and honored, because it is such an important act of self-care at the most fundamental level of health and wellness.”

“Making the phone call and showing up to your first appointment is 50 percent of the work and the hardest part of the work. Once you get started with a therapist that is right for you, you will thank yourself,” he said.

And maybe that’s the most unknown and surprising benefit of all.
