I know that FMAB stands for Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. I know this. I use this acronym frequently. I have for years. And yet, I cannot shut up the voice in my head telling me it actually stands for "Female Male Assigned at Birth."

A timeline of events in Roy’s life from birth up to the Promised Day. Please note that this timeline contains my personal headcanons for Roy’s upbringing.

1885 - December 3rd: Roy Owen Mustang was born.

1887 - Both of Roy’s parents were killed in an incident close to Wellesley in a skirmish between Cretan and Amestrian officers (link). - Chris Mustang became Roy’s legal foster mother.

1888 - Chris Mustang became Roy’s legal foster mother.

1890 - Chris Mustang fully adopted Roy.

1901 - Roy begins studying alchemy under Berthold Hawkeye. - The civil war in Ishval begins.

1902 - Roy enlists in the military.

1905 - Roy graduates from the military academy. - Berthold Hawkeye passes away. - Roy becomes a certified State Alchemist and earns the moniker Flame.

1908 - Fuhrer Bradley issues Order #3066, thus calling all State Alchemists to the front lines. Roy in particular is sent to Daliha. 

1909 - The civil war in Ishval ends. - Roy is promoted to Lieutenant Colonel. - Roy begins putting together his team in Eastern Command.

1910 - Roy meets the Elric brothers and recruits Edward to become a State Alchemist.

1911 - Roy is promoted to Colonel. - Elicia Hughes is born. - October: Edward Elric becomes the youngest State Alchemist in history. He is assigned to Roy Mustang’s command.

1913 - Fullmetal vs. Flame takes place in East City.

1914 - Spring: Scar begins killing State Alchemists. - Summer: Scar kills Shou and Nina Tucker in East City. - Summer: Maes Hughes is murdered in Central City. - Summer: Team Mustang is transferred to Central Command. - Autumn: Operation Fishing Trip takes place. While Ling and Lan Fan encounter Wrath and Envy, Team Mustang handle Gluttony and Lust. The operation ends in Laboratory 3. Lieutenant Havoc is paralyzed from the waist down as a result of an injury from Lust. Roy was able to kill her after sustaining stab wounds along with second and third degree burns. - Autumn: After another encounter with Gluttony, Team Mustang is disbanded.

1915 - Spring: The Promised Day takes place.*

Dyslexia coming in clutch here, making me read fmab as “assigned male at birth” then proceeding to read entire paragraphs about Fullmetal alchemist characters. Being vaguely  confused for a couple seconds and the just accepted it. Like yeah of course they’re all trans women, and worship the other woman in their lives. Makes perfect sense.

one of my favorite things about fmab is how many men there are who are completely devoted to the women in their lives, whether familially, romantically, or platonically.

like you have maes hughes, who is always talking about his wife and daughter and how amazing they are (though it’s meant to be annoying, you can tell his love is pure and sweet), who dies with a picture of them right next to him and gracia and elicia’s names on his lips.

there’s ling yao, who time and time again refuses to leave lan fan behind, who will have his friends pass her notes so she knows he okay, who will take control from greed just to jump in front of her.

there’s sig curtis, who is silent with his words but loud with his love, who holds izumi gently when she’s coughing up blood, who places a hand on her shoulder so she knows she’s not alone when she remembers their lost child, who looks upon his wife with pride, who screams her name when he fears she’s lost forever.

there’s captain buccaneer and major miles, who follow major general olivier armstrong into battle fearlessly, who are loyal to her before they’re loyal to their country, who send men to help her fight when they know she won’t admit she needs it, and buccaneer dies asking that ling make sure her orders to him are followed.

there’s roy mustang, who places all his trust in riza hawkeye and does everything he can to keep her safe, who calls her his queen- the most powerful piece on the chessboard- and panics when he sees she isn’t at her post, who is so devoted to her that the homunculi know putting her in danger is the only way to get him to do what they want.

there’s alphonse elric, who walks through a blizzard to keep winry rockbell from walking into a trap, who jumps in front of mei chang time and time again to keep her safe and carries her in his armor when she’s hurt.

and then there’s edward elric, who eases a gun from winry rockbell’s hands and tells her she has hands that help people, who lets her cry into his shoulder, who looks up to her as the person who helped him stand again, who does everything in his power to keep her safe, who makes it his mission to make her cry tears of joy rather than sorrow, who loves her so much that he confesses by telling her he wants to spend his life with her.

it is just such pure devotion and raw love, and there are so many ways it’s shown, and i think it’s beautiful.

Every time I see Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood abbreviated as FMAB i laugh a little inside because i just think:

AFAB/AMAB-> AFMAB-> assigned Fullmetal at birth
