OOH a fun challenge 😌 the shifting dynamics between the five make it a lil hard to anchor them into the available tropes without inevitable overlap/gaps, BUT it’s interesting to think about it like we did back when we were discussing the RoTG AU: what is at their center, or at the very least, an intriguing lens to interpret their center through?

Although there’s the instinct to try and put Haru in the hero/leader position with Rin as the lancer and foil (that’s a comparison/thread that canon likes to revolve around, which is still fun!), I think it’d be neat to think about the lineup from a slightly different perspective:

The leader/hero: Rei

The lancer: Haru

The brains: Makoto

The brawn: Rin

The heart: Nagisa

Ok hold on HOLD ON let me explain!! Think about how we can view season one (as a launching point) if we take up Haru’s suggestion/wish to not be the main character, and move the lens we’re looking through juuust slightly to shine the light more on Rei’s story. Even though he’s new to the group, newly establishing himself as a swimmer and friend in the existing (corroded, faded) Iwatobi dynamic, his addition is the real catalyst for the story — they can’t move forward until they find a fourth in Rin’s absence/distance, and all of the magic we see unfold happens because of Rei’s spark, his perspective, his journey, all that he is. It doesn’t matter if he’s not the one consciously calling the shots for them all; watching him learn and stumble and get back up and trust and love is what gets everyone else to reflect and react. The ✨main character rei✨ agenda is still alive and kicking in my heart 😮‍💨

SPEAKING OF HEART, let’s talk about that one next!! The “heart” (from what I understand) serves not only as the peacemaker and glue that binds the group together, but a complement to the hero/leader as well. Now, I know that every freakin essay I’ve written about Makoto positions him perfectly as the heart of the group (#the makoto files my beloved). HOWEVER, if we’re shifting this whole band around to have Rei at the helm, the person who stands right next to him and keeps him balanced is the guy who got him into this whole mess. Really, if Rei is the guiding light, then Nagisa is the one who went looking for a match in the first place. At the center of all of his antics is this desire to keep them all bound together, united or reunited as friends and trusted teammates. He’s essential joy — comic relief and chaos are the ways he checks in on and takes care of people, especially in a dynamic that where the guys might be a little hesitant about admitting to their attachments out loud (at first).

Again, although Makoto and Nagisa could be interchangeable in their roles here (heart/brains), I think we could do something fun with slotting Makoto and Rin into the “brains and brawn” duo roles, respectively. Makoto is soft contemplation and careful steps where Rin is hotheaded intensity and dynamic force. As a duo, they bleed into each other — we’ve seen how Makoto can have moments led by passion and power, just as we’ve seen Rin hesitate or rethink his position (and, interestingly enough, the reasons for these shifts can often be linked back to strong push-pull moments involving the other). I think there’s value in acknowledging both their roles as a shared duo and as individuals within the group (as in like, for example, how Makoto’s thinking might change trajectory when with Rei individually versus a situation with all three of them in a room, ykwim? Anywayyy).

Now, the lancer as Haru!! This one!! This is fun because he’s both the ideal and the anomaly for Rei, right? Haru becomes this incomprehensible figure in his line of sight that gradually shifts to be a trusted teammate competing by his side. He’s not a total opposite, but there are distinctions between them, and casting Rei and Haru into the hero/lancer dynamic helps to highlight some of those character differences. Haru is strong in his skillset, but teaching someone else when it felt so natural for him? Getting back into the mind of a impassioned novice with his eyes on a beautiful future, when the only realm Haru dwells in these days to protect himself is the immediate present? That’s a disconnect and distinction that affects how they both individually navigate growing throughout the story. Like, Rei as a character is oriented to what it means to learn and grow in a way that opposes Haru’s habits of staying grounded and honing in on what he already knows and is comfortable with. Yeah, there’s a shared sense of rigidity in rules and routines for both of them (autism boys my beloveds), BUT it manifests and leads them down different paths, and really kinda secures why it’s interesting to frame Rei as the hero here over Haru. Rei’s reliance on theory comes from a love of experimenting and growing and learning, like the truths and beliefs he holds are built on (if not his own work, then what he presumes to be) a long line of trials and errors and rewrites to hone in on an emerging ideal. Haru’s reliance on routine is rooted in preservation and comfort, whether from his own strong immediate/persisting desires or the expectations of others he comes to hold as important to maintain and heavy (like,,, we know Haru talks big game about swimming free and for himself but also has a sense of justice that leads him down all of these instances of performing for other people). That being said, even if Haru isn’t the hero in this proposed dynamic, his position at Rei’s other side (when Nagisa isn’t trying to grip both of Rei’s hands and run into the wilderness or smth) is essential: he gives Rei a way to grow and fight and learn because of his existing swimming prowess. He’s a quiet muse to gleam inspiration from (a puzzle to be solved) and a ticket into the competitive world (pulling weight during relays while Rei builds and builds). And uhh that’s COOL MAN IDK!!!

I think the part I’m struggling to put into words here at the end is just how much these perceived roles can shift around with just a little nudge and reveal even more fascinating details within the story. There are similarities between characters like Rin and Rei (push forward) versus Makoto and Haru (pull back) that make you wonder about those duos in isolation. There’s the idea of changing around even one pair’s positions (like switching Makoto and Nagisa, or even Haru and Rin) that 1) draws attention to those pair’s similarities, and 2) bring into question how that changing position might shift their perceived impact on others in the group. The style five is a interweaving rainbow of colors that overlays and combines to create an infinite number of hues, and we could talk about variations of their dynamics honestly all night. Don’t even get me started on bringing their individual colors into this conversation, because that’s a whole other onslaught of potential meanings—

Free Parenting 2015 (AO3 2016)

The story just means a lot to me. I came up with it together with a friend, and it triggered a whole series. It is obvious that this story is eight years old at this point. My understanding of the English language and the Japanese culture has developed a lot since I wrote it, but I'm still proud of what I made, even if reading the mistakes now makes me cringe, it's only because I care. That I came up with that AU and all the conflicts that would come from this setting is still beyond me.

Hotel Room Fantasies 2017

This is still my most successful one-shot ever. Of course, it is BL, so that makes sense. Still, I once again managed to pull off exactly what I wanted. My intentions with the story was that the reader should not be able to tell whether what the boys do is actually happening or if it's just something going on in Serinuma's head, and I think I accomplished that really well. I really want to say I did it to perfection, but I also don't want to praise myself too much, but oh well. The numbers speak for themselves when it comes to this story.

Ace of Chatrooms 2017

My first chat-fic and my most successful one (of two). I remember that I only wrote this story because I wanted to try and write a chat-fic, and before I knew it, I had written half the story and it wasn't about to end anytime soon. I have no understanding of English chat-language and therefore did not use it. As a result, it probably feels less realistic, but everyone can follow it easily. It also has a lot of my humor in it and it is one of the fics I will sit down to read when I feel down and need something to laugh at. I've already read it more times than I can count, and the sequal too. When the Daiya anime continues, I'll probably write the third part of this series, but I definitely need the material to base the chaos off of before I can unfold it again.

Danger Zone 2021 (Title might change)

This story is probably the most complicated one I've ever written, and not because I find the plot too complicated. It's mainly the storylines. We follow quite a few characters throughout the story and their stories are all connected, not just because they know each other, but each minor plotline has an impact on the overall story. I'm proud of how it turned out. I still call it my masterpiece. I mean, it took me two years writing it and only half a year publishing it. That part is bittersweet, but I'm proud of my work and I enjoy going back to read it.

I Will Go With You 2021-2022

So much research went into this story. I did the same when I wrote Figure Swimming, but I still did more research here. I wanted to make the snowboarding seem realistic, and I wanted all facts about Canada to be as accurate as possible. There were a few problems, as it is not known exactly where in Canada Langa is from, except they don't speak French there. But I looked into how long it would take to travel to Canada, how to get in, what kind of food is traditionally Canadian, the school system, and of course everything worth knowing about snowboarding. On top of that, I feel like I managed to flesh out my original characters really well. I still have art of Louis and Lian that I don't think made it unto any website. I also think I managed to make Langa's grandparents into more than just some stick figures, and the same with Erica. I managed to include all the scenes I had in my head and make an interesting story. The only thing I'm sad about is that even in my story Reki can't win a race. Good thing I'm playing with the idea of making a sequel to this story too.

Honorable Mentions:

Imagination (2016) because I like that I managed to come up with it and execute the idea that well.

Figure Swimming (2017) because other people tell me I got the characters' personalities really well (and it was the first work I did a lot of research for).

Dumb Luck (2022) because it marks my "dark age" of realism. I also personally think it makes sense in spite of me not using the names of the main characters of the story.

Knights and Princesses (2022) because the scene on the bridge came out just as I had intended it to.

I know I was not supposed to list this many, but with a total of 88 works on AO3, there is quite a lot to choose from. I also would have liked to mention a few more, but I guess I'll really have to stop myself at this point.

Travel I guess.” Sousuke had an unsure expression on his features as he replied too, “Probably about the same.” The scoff you let out had them looking over at you in amusement.

“That’s it? Nothing specific?” You motioned to the laptop as you continued, “I mean even those idiots have some interesting things on their list.” Sousuke frowned at that, eyeing the laptop with a wry expression and nervous laugh, “Most of theirs are sex based so define interesting.” Rin however was grinning, he’d dipped his head down, lips brushing the shell of your ear as he hummed, “Ohh, are we asking about a naughty, fantasies bucket list hm? Bold.” His voice had lowered and reverberated through your mind making you warm, eyes flickering nervously to your friend who seemed to be rather tense now. 2. Favorite canon thing about this character?

What isn't, honestly. I really love his love for odd mascots like iwatobi chan and Northern stoplight loosejaw kun. I love that he makes little hand crafted figures and has merch of them. So real of him.

How he can easily succumb to any of his favorite things like mackerel and water and how people bribe him with that. I think it's hilarious.

How much he has done for his friends. He really does show a lot of his love through actions, which speak louder than words. Letting Nagisa stay at his house, also I remember reading that he once wore a girl's swimsuit to save Nagisa from embarrassment because his sisters had packed him one to tease him; Being overall protective of Makoto, especially when things relating to the ocean are involved, the cherry blossom pool for Rin... he just does so much and I adore how truly caring he is.

How expressive his eyes are. How they sparkle and swirl and show so many emotions hidden behind his mostly impassive face.

Also i love how everyone has agreed he's like a big cat. A big water-loving black cat. It suits him.

And so much more, but this question was only supposed to be about one thing, so I'll leave it there.

12. What's a headcanon you have for this character

Oo okay so, i know I've said this so many times across many different posts, but:

That he's in the aroace spectrum. Specifically demiromantic/asexual. From seeing the show, it always seemed like the story was pushing how he really was not interested in anything pertaining to love and sexuality. Sure, this is also because most of the moments that pop up are meant to be funny and not taken too seriously, but he's MY comfort character, and I CHOOSE what the headcanons will be.

Like the story of his "first crush" being a waterfall because water is just so gorgeous and amazing. Or how his "lewd" magazines under the bed were about hot springs. Like, this man is 100% asexual, and this is the hill I will die on. (Though there are certain scenes with a certain someone that appear to have a certain tension like in the splash free! Ending, but they're mostly just so intense because they are also so intense.)

The demiromantic part is well, admittedly, mostly due to shipping reasons. In the actual canon, I might even be inclined to believe he's just fully aromantic.

However, romantic Rinharu has cemented itself in my brain permanently, and their chemistry and story are simply too good. So I do think Haru could discover he's demi through Rin. I just feel like eventually they could reach a point where he starts reconsidering the way he feels about him. All those dazzling smiles, funny electric charges that run through his body, and that racing pulse when he's with him... until it all just boils over and oops, he realizes he's in love.

I also have a very long headcanon about how him and Rin would go about things and what would happen in a relationship, like how Haru may not really be one for traditional romantic gestures and being tactile, but still enjoys the things Rin does and knows they make him happy, so he starts doing them more until they feel so natural- but there's literally too much to mention here, so maybe I'll leave it for another time if you're interested hehe.

24. What other character from another fandom of yours reminds you of them?

While not entirely that similar, one who comes to mind is Chief Justice Neuvillete from the court of Fontaine in Genshin Impact.

He's also a huge fan of water. However, he enjoys it by drinking it instead of swimming. He's such a water connoisseur. He mentions all the different tastes and feels he gets from drinking water from different nations, how some feel more mineral rich, other soothing and fresh, etc. He's constantly drinking water during his idle animations. I think him and Haru could potentially get along.

He also gets along with these little fantasy creatures called melusines and is essentially like their father, lol. He loves them very much and is very gentle with them. Maybe a stretch, but it reminded me of how Haru is good with kids and also animals like cats.

Neuvillette is also technically the fastest swimmer in genshin since he is the hydro dragon of Fontaine and has a passive talent that increases his and his party's swimming speed.

Oh, and during an event quest, he gifts the traveler a cute little hand crafted ladle of an aquatic creature. And it just reminded me so much of Haru. I love it so much.

I would love to, but I'm not sure if she would lmao.

However, painting with her would be really fun, plus I'd love to see what her technique is with watercolors. I'd love to create pieces with her. Maybe she'd be a bit mean and blunt at times, though, but eh, I think that makes her funny, lol. She is involved in fandom, too, given that she loves camp pining hearts. Although not as much as peridot. Maybe I could get her into free! lol, then we'd really hit it off. Going to the ocean with her would be so fun. Maybe a bit scary at times, but fun nonetheless.

Oof, I really don't know fashion aesthetics by name, but I feel like she could wear coastal, breathable clothes. Either shorts with loose shirts or long baggy pants. Something like these:

Bob. I loved her attitude this entire episode. Her deadpan expression and half assed hits and runs. It reminded me of me during middle school when the p.e. teacher would force us to play soccer. (I hated soccer). Plus I love the outfit. In this one she just gives a casual thumbs up to ruby and sapphire because they got distracted flirting with each other.

This has been sitting in my drafts for literal YEARS and I wanted to post it, originally was supposed to have all the members but I lost my ideas.

La Squadra x Reader; Swim Team AU

A/N: I'm so sorry for taking this long to answer but I wanted to take my time with this ask because I really do love this AU and I was busy. Thank you to my friends for some help (since most I know of swim teams is from fuckin Free! Iwatobi Swim Club LOL) Hehe science purposes huh 😏 Sorry there's no smut in this one but I wanted to rule out the setting for the AU!

You work at your local Passione Sporting Club, a place where many a professional athletes have trained to become who they are today. And while there are various sporting facilities available, you are in charge of taking care of a specific swim team, La Squadra. The formation of the team, as you learned when you first joined, happened several years ago as seven children banded together as friends to support each other's swimming careers. And you are happy to help them on their journey. As you know, there are 4 main styles of swimming; butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, and freestyle. Medleys usually take place in that order.

Sorbet & Gelato:

Not swimmers. They're actually coaches for the other swimmers who come to Passione Sporting Club. They've been here for 10 almost 20 years watching the rest of the group who now call themselves "La Squadra" grow athletically and professionally. They were previously in the national Italian swim team as medley racers respectively. They were most fond of relay races as they loved the team work shared between team mates when doing such a race. They only teach adult swimmers but it didn't stop them from noticing younger members of La Squadra practicing in the swimming pools. The passion they saw in some of the members let them know how far they would go. You, as the team's manager, have a good professional relationship with them. However, it doesn't stop Gelato from flirting with you sometimes, surprising you considering you know he has been with Sorbet for a long time. Even more surprising that Sorbet doesn't seem fazed and is receptive to the idea. They sometimes joke about teaching you to swim as well.

Sorbet first met Gelato when he joined the local swimming club of his childhood. They became fast friends and rivals, always trying to outrace each other. Sorbet had goals of reaching the Olympics since he was a child and with Gelato's support he made it together with him. His favorite style is the front crawl which he is most comfortable with. He's proudest win was a front crawl 100m competition where he got gold.

Gelato started swimming as a hobby. He never envisioned himself as an Olympic swimmer. But when he saw Sorbet's resolve to make it, he got inspired and made it his goal to reach the Olympics with his boyfriend. His favorite style is the breaststroke and his proudest win was the a 50m backstroke competition where he got silver since it's his weakest style.

Risotto:

When Risotto was a child living in Sicily, his cousin often went swimming in the sea with him which is where he first learned. Ever since then, he'd known what career he'd like to go to once he grows up. And so, he took a swimming scholarship to college and during his pre-teens he joined Passione Sporting Club to train for his future career. Everyone knows him as a backstroke master and you can see why when you notice his immaculate back muscles during training. While he's good at the other styles, he's much faster using the backstroke. His proudest moment was winning a national competition of 100m men's backstroke where he won gold. You know he was one of the original members of "La Squadra" the other two being Formaggio and Prosciutto when those three decided to start the club. He's the most cooperative with you when it comes to competitions. As the manager, one of your duties is to rule out social and athletic events that the members will attend and he's always receptive to the competitions you tell him will be good for his career. He's not the most communicative so you have to weed out some of thoughts and feelings on the matter. Because of your friendly nature, you two share a close bond as you help him train and often see him swim way past closing. It's a secret between you two that you cherish deeply. There have been some times where he offered you to swim with him.

Risotto favors free style swimming the most but his muscle development on his upper body has made him a good breaststroke user which makes him much faster than the front crawl

Out of all competitions, he loves swimming medley relays the most. He gathers the medley participants (usually other la squadra members) to give a motivating speech and cheers the loudest when he's not swimming with them. He may not show it, but he is highly competitive and likes being challenged in the pool.

Prosciutto:

As one of the founding members of the original team, Prosciutto regards La Squadra with lots of pride. As a child he had no passion for swimming but after joining the Passione Sporting Club with a mild interest, he was quickly swept away into practice. He realized as a child that swimming allowed him a way to focus his energy and determination. He's not one to half-ass anything and swimming was no different. Eventually, he started feeling a connection to swimming after exercising out all his stress through the activity and finding a love for the activity like no other. Members like Risotto and Formaggio were inspiring to him even if he didn't admit it verbally, he showed up to practice with the two everyday, determined to be like them. He's one of the more difficult members to get along with. At first, it seems he has almost nothing to tell you except talk about his career goals and about helping other team members (namely Pesci). But eventually, your conversations turned more casual and you got to see a side of him that is much more friendly. Sometimes, he would smile towards you from the pool and you noticed that he doesn't ever miss the opportunity to show you his gratitude as their manager. Communicating that it's a difficult job and that he's glad a person like you is able to keep track of all the members and how much he appreciates your organization. You can't lie that his words are some of the only things that makes the job worth it.

Prosciutto is the only member with no preference towards style. While he was developing his swimming skills, he decided to pay hone each style so he would not be lacking in any area. While that doesn't make him a specialist, it gives him more options in competitions.

He rather enjoys individual competitions and loves competing against the other members. Whenever Formaggio dares him for a casual friendly race, he never backs down, treating it as a real race. The other members get a kick out of him taking everything a bit too seriously.

Pesci:

Swimming is as easy to him as breathing. Growing up with a fishing family by the sea, Pesci was accustomed to swimming from an extremely early age. It was sheer passion of swimming among the fish that kept him going but it was largely a hobby. He joined Passione Sporting Club as a teen, to keep up his swimming skills during high school but quickly met Prosciutto who inspired him to no end. Prosciutto once praised his style and speed saying he could make it to the nationals if he tried, maybe even the Olympics and from that moment he decided to join La Squadra and make both himself and the team proud. He's the most amicable out of anyone else in the team and since the moment you two met you'd become easy friends. At first he was a bit shy to talk to you but he caught your eye a couple of times during swim practices and it made his heart soar just a little every time you waved with a smile. Eventually, that got him talking to you and you noticed he started being more specific about his goals and ambitions for his swimming career. You quickly picked up the potential that Prosciutto always talked about regarding Pesci, truly, he was a gifted swimmer but his hard work pays off the most.

Pesci loves the butterfly stroke above all else. It's the first stroke he learned from a family member and honed his skills until it became his strongest. It gave him the biceps that he now shows off sometimes. He's pretty agile with the stroke as well but he doesn't cower from competing in other styles.

Pesci is another member who loves team sports and gets the most excited for medley relays with his team. Prosciutto and Risotto motivate him the most before the races and he's always the first to arrive out of excitement of having the team together. But most of all, he loves to hang out together with the team to celebrate afterwards.
