Empire of the Sun Close Out American Tour with Over-the-Top Show at Sold-Out Kings Theatre
Tumblr media
Empire of the Sun – Kings Theatre – November 26, 2024
Longtime Australian collaborators Luke Steele and Nick Littlemore have produced electronic landscapes for more than 15 years as Empire of the Sun. In 2008, their breakout earworm, “Walking on a Dream,” cemented the pair as purveyors of cool and mystical vibes. Steele and Littlemore ebb and flow among personal projects, joining forces to concoct musical and visual spectacles. But it’s taken them a bit more time for their fourth LP, Ask That God, due to a global pandemic and promotion of Steele’s 2022 debut album, Listen to the Water. Their signature visual extravaganza, complete with headdresses and over-the-top sets arrived at a sold-out Kings Theatre on Tuesday night to close out their U.S. dates.

Upon the stage laid a reclining bust (which is said to resemble Littlemore, who doesn’t tour anymore), with a set of clasped hands bookending the stage. A lightning storm ushered in two dancers ritualistically marching in from opposite ends of the stage to meet at the center, where Steele appeared between them adorned in a red robe and headdress. The dramatic entrance welcomed the new album’s lead single, “Changes,” to kick off the night.

The dancers, like Steele, had multiple costume changes throughout the show. On “Cherry Blossom,” they returned dressed as geishas, and Steele switched into a sleeveless black latex robe accessorized with a wide-brim, quintana-style hat. As if the costumes and sets weren’t enough to dazzle the eyes, the videos projected to the back wall further pulled in the audience with a zebra casually lying next to Steele during “We Are the People” and a wall of TV sets fittingly for “Television.” In a fun moment, the singer announced that a special guest from Nigeria was in town to join in on “Music on the Radio.” The guest was none other than the fictitious jellyfish-like character, Superchia, featured in the videos for the latest album.

One of the most memorable images of the night was an outstretched hand slowly extending to Steele, in a white robe and headpiece, perched on the massive clasped hands during “Ask That God.” The room erupted in claps for “High and Low,” as a video of clouds led to a doorway to a heavenly haven. A final wardrobe change concluded with a white, longhaired floor-length coat with another wide-brimmed hat. Steele destroyed a guitar to put an exclamation point on “Standing on the Shore,” followed by a resurrection performance complete with claps, golden confetti and marigold leis. The rebirth highlighted the final song of the set, “Alive.” —Sharlene Chiu | @Shar0ck

when will we talk about the willful helplessness epidemic on here. So many people on this god forsaken website demand to have any and all things that exist outside their personal experiences directly, personally pre-chewed and spoonfed to them. And when you do, they'll then ask for you to swallow for them, too, because, you see, in THEIR experience..,

Tumblr media
(about this guy)
a kiln god is a small clay sculptural creature that stays on/in/near a kiln while it’s firing, to watch over the pottery inside and protect it
Tumblr media
mine are all vaguely humanoid and holding pottery, but they can be anything
Tumblr media
a lot of people leave their kiln gods unglazed, and only ever make one or two. because I work with a shared kiln, my kiln gods have to be inside the kiln so they don’t get bumped or broken, so it makes more sense to glaze them and keep making more
Tumblr media
(^this one I kept, she lives on my pottery desk)
Tumblr media
people have lots of little traditions around kilns and pottery. there are so many variables to successfully finishing a piece of pottery, and many of the steps are out of our control. it’s nice to have a kiln god watching over our work
Tumblr media
if you take a pottery class, your teacher might mention the kiln gods. for some potters/studios they’re more of a concept than anything physical
Tumblr media
what can I say, humans just love to make little guys

sometimes I randomly think about the time a girl posted in this girls only Facebook group I’m in telling everyone how she broke up with her boyfriend and he lied saying that he lost the spare key she gave him, only to then break into her apartment when she wasn’t home and steal the cat they’d adopted while they were together, but then he denied having done this and she didn’t really have proof that he took the cat since he wouldn’t let her come into his place and look for it. And then another girl saw this post and knew her ex-boyfriend, and she was like “girl. I used to hook up with your mans back in xxxx and I still have his number. If you want, I’ll hit him up and get him to invite me back to his place and see if your cat’s there.” And the OP was like “bet.”
So this woman hit up homie dog, asked him out for drinks, went home with him, slept with him, and then woke up in the middle of the night and TOOK THE CAT. Like she had only said that she would confirm if the cat was there but then she took it upon herself to steal this woman’s cat back. Like she full on Trojan horsed this man and then hit up homegirl like “I got the goods. Where you wanna meet.” And then the two of them posted a photo of them together with the cat to the group.
And I just think women supporting women is so beautiful.

frankly, the people whose kneejerk reaction to bisan asking for a global strike form the 21st-28th is to say that it takes years to organize a general strike are really unhelpful! no one is saying otherwise, but palestine will be a smoking crater if we all wait for years to do anything - bisan is asking us to do something now. Like are we only supposed to do something if we can do it perfectly??? At some point it’s a valid critique about the work that goes into social movement, and at another point I feel like some people are just trying to absolve themselves from not putting any effort into observing a week of economic inaction.
like idk! I get it, okay! People have bills to pay that don’t magically go away for a strike, we don’t have nearly enough social infrastructure in place to support people to fully stop going to work for a week. But fuck, dude! Stop immediately responding in such a defeatist way! Cut out unnecessary purchases! Try to shop local! Put more effort into promoting Palestinian voices online! Attend a protest, call a local rep, do something!
