I'd want to be ten again, and hold my mother one last time before she passed away, tell her everything will turn alright in the end. And that I'll make her proud one day.

🔥 Into the Woods and Cinderella

Are you asking about the character of Cinderella in Into the Woods, or as two separate things? Eh. While it has some great individual numbers ("On the Steps of the Palace," "Moments in the Woods," the last few in general), Woods is overall one of my less-liked Sondheim musicals. It's simply very cluttered and can be hard to follow at times - which is of course what's going to happen when you string together half a dozen fairy tales with your own plot.

"Cendrillon" has always been my favorite fairy tale so I actually have quite a number of opinions on it and its various adaptations. I mostly keep out of it though as I don't have a stake in the hottest topic surrounding the story: whether or not the character is a good role model for girls. That I relate to it at all despite having never been a girl seems to be more of a fluke of specific cultural circumstances than anything else. Even so...I've never cared for how edgy online types like to hold up the Grimm brothers' "Aschenputtel" as the real or superior version. Perrault's version - the one Disney adapted, and the one with most of the iconic elements like the fairy godmother, the pumpkin coach, and (arguably) the glass slippers - is over a century older and does what it aims to do very well without any bodily mutilation.

❌What WIP do you find the most challenging? Why?

I would say...besides my original story ideas (because I am a perfectionist and I always feel the story can be better), the one I am currently struggling with is my Cinderella Nalu fic.

Reason for that is because it has morphed into something WAY different than I originally had. Instead of just going through the fairy tale, it is taking a new path that I had not expected.

Now it will be a whole new story, with many paths and fitting it all together, lol.

Maybe...I will take a page from @kiliinstinct and make plans for it later if I like it enough. 😂

What's a Coup - A short Descendants Fic

“The Queen of Hearts has declared a coup at Auradon Prep.”

The news made the room pause. Everyone turned and looked up at the attendant, holding a tablet with the information that had just come in. Then, slowly, everyone turned their attention to the man in the blue suit in the center of the room, who was currently invested in a card game spread in between all the inhabitants.

King Ben slipped the final UNO card of his hand into his suit pocket. “A coup?” he repeated.

“Yes, your majesty.”

Ben thought about that for a moment, then said. “Huh. She’s not doing very well.”

“Emotionally, or at the coup?” Evie asked.

“Both?” Jay asked.

“Obviously both,” Ben said. “But what I meant was-“ He stood, then began to pat himself down. Pocket one, pocket two, inside his jacket, up his arms. “Yes, sorry, just checking. I’m still here. Many miles away. So if she’s organizing a coup… she’s doing very badly.”

He sat back down. Evie, Mal, and Jay were chuckling, though Belle and Adam didn’t seem too reassured.

“She’s taken over Auradon Prep,” the attendant said. “About sixty people are barricaded in the courtyard. King Charming managed to break in, but is now trapped in there. Rumors have it that the Queen of Hearts is planning on executing Queen Ella.”

“Sixty people?” Evie asked.

Ben put his fingertips together. “So, we have a hostage situation. Not a coup.”

“She’s calling it a coup.”

“Then she’s an idiot. A coup is when you overthrow the government. She’s got one school. That’s like going to your local grocery store, barricading the doors, and declaring yourself the mayor.” Ben paused a moment to remove his final card from his jacket. “By the way, I was just about to win. Since I have to bow out-“ He threw down a wild card on top of a red seven. “I’m claiming victory now.”

“That’s not how it works!” Mal said from his left side. “I was next.”

“And what could you have played that would have stopped me?” Ben asked. “You don’t have any +2 cards.”

Mal grumbled in aquisence, and threw her last three cards down. Everyone else dropped their hands too. Jay, who had been placed in the unfortunate position of being after Ben in the lineup, looked particularly excited to drop the twenty-seven cards he’d been gifted.

“Has she got any military besides her cards?” Ben asked, taking the tablet from the attendant.

“Well, the cards can summon military personnel-“

“Yes, I’m aware of her abilities with cards. That’s why I asked if she had them.” Ben paused in flipping through the tablet to point at Mal across the room. The expression on his face was almost suspicious. The attendant followed Ben’s gaze only to see Mal mimic the expression and action, so the two were pointing at each other as if stuck in the spiderman meme. Ben’s fake suspicion cracked after a few seconds, and then he turned his point to the ground in a silent “Get over here.”

“I’m not following why you aren’t alarmed by this,” Adam said. “Why is this not a coup?”

“I am alarmed by it,” Ben said, though his tone was more nonchalant than one would expect. “Sixty people are being held hostage. But I’m putting the issue in perspective. Sixty people, out of a country of 300,000, and all contained in one tiny courtyard by a woman whose home is now undefended.”

“That doesn’t look like sixty,” Mal said, peering over his shoulder. “Maybe… forty?”

“Of course, we need to act quickly to return them to their homes and families-“

“And make sure Cinderella doesn’t die.”

“Exactly. But like I said before, a coup is when the government is taken over. And the government-“ Ben spread his arm at an angle, mockingly presenting himself and Mal to the room. “-is right here, and we are fine. So she is not doing very well at executing her coup.” He examined the tablet further. “She could have at least attempted to lay siege to my castle.”

“The castle isn’t the government either.”

“Yes, but it’s better than our high school.”

“Why not send part of the army to occupy Wonderland? Show her what a proper coup is?”

“Well, two wrongs don’t make a right, but it could be better in the long run. I have a feeling that Wonderland citizens will welcome our troops.” Ben switched off the livestream. “Let’s do that. Have Lonnie take command and lead soldiers in. Once that’s done, we’ll see if the Queen of Hearts will be willing to barter for her home territory. And while that’s going on, put some soldiers around Auradon Prep and arm them with ranged weapons. A sniper team in case any of them try to leave Auradon Prep. I want them contained there. The Queen of Hearts uses her cards to attack, but she’s only got fifty-two and has to take the time to throw them. Not to say she’s not fast. Warn the army to not make the same mistake Fairy Godmother did in waiting to use the full phrase.”

“And Cinderella?”

“Where are the rest of Uma’s pirates?” Ben asked. “Send in the VK’s.” He handed her the tablet. “Former villains fight against villains best. And they listen to you more, so-“

“Harry Hook likes you more than me.”

“An exception to the general rule. Can I leave this in your hands?”

Mal laughed in response and nodded. Ben pulled his phone out to contact Lonnie, when a thought struck him. He turned to the attendant. “One more thing,” he said.

“Yes, your majesty?”

Ben walked over to where his parents sat and put his hands over Belle’s ears. “If she does decide to siege my castle, tell her to aim for those awful statues on the roof.”

Belle swatted his arm, but the tension was broken. Ben left laughing to phone Lonnie.

A few Ashlynn Ella HCs <3

Despite being a royalty, Ashlynn grew up having normal household chores such as sweeping and washing the dishes, she's usually working alongside the maids

she is immensely loved by the entire castle staff

cinderella hosts a banquet every year on Ashlynn's birthday

and every year ashlynn asks as much as the staff as possible to eat alongside the royals

didn't get her own phone until she moved to eah

still almost never uses it. probably takes 2-3 business days to reply to a text message

briar ends up spamming her all the time to get her to finally reply

since its part of Ashlynn's destiny for her mom to die first, her mom probably fell ill shortly after Ashlynn signed the storybook of legends

which shouldn't have happened, since Ashlynn only signed the fake book

the truth is that milton grimm poisoned her to cover up the truth

hunter taught her how to use a bow

and she actually got pretty good at it

gets way too excited for pumpkin spice season

has SO MANY candles in her room

also has a huge collection of cardigans

grows her own veggies and herbs to cook with

she and hunter have like a thousand cringey pet names for each other

but she mostly calls him "sweet cheeks", "handsome", or "Honey Bunny"

while he will mostly call her "pumpkin", "babe" or "sweetie"

if they are together for too long their pet names will get progressively more absurd

like why did she just call him Hottie McHotpants

why did he just call her pookie wookie dookie bookie moo-

since Ashlynn's mom can also speak to animals, and is also very much against slaughtering animals, they only keep livestock for milk, eggs, ect. (these are for others who live in the castle, ashlynn and her mom are vegan)

before going to spellementary school and meeting briar and apple, she considered her best friend to be a cow

this cow was born the same week as ashlynn, so they kind of grew up together

she still comes to talk to the cow every time she visits home, unfortunately cows only live 15-20 years, so she doesn't have much time left

she always gets talked to by teachers for having muddy shoes and dirt under her fingernails

even when ashlynn was a royal, cerise always felt strangely at ease around her

never gets any of briars meme references, but laughs anyway

ALWAYS helps clean up after parties

she owns a car and has a license, but never drives unless absolutely necessary because its bad for the environment

she will either walk, bike, or ride horseback/carriage depending on the distance she needs to go

has multiple terrariums she uses to nurse little creatures back to health, before releasing them back into the wild

uses very little makeup day-to-day, just blush and mascara

has a bunch of dried flowers hanging upside-down in her dorm

uses work and cleaning as coping mechanisms

is definitely too nice for her own good. like customers or basically anyone can be SO rude to her and she will never stand up for herself

is constantly telling herself "maybe they just had a bad day?"

it drives briar nuts

if someone got her order wrong at a restaurant briar would have to tell a server because ashlynn was just going to eat it anyway

she'd still leave a huge tip, even if she didn't get good service

Man, oh man, oh Manny!

Star Wars’ The Acolyte may have been review bombed but it opened y’alls eyes up to the man, Manny Jacinto. The Filipino-Canadian actor made waves as The Stranger/Qimir. Now, if you haven’t seen the show, I won’t spoil it for you but I am sure by this point, you’ve seen some sort of meme/TikTok/post/text from your nanay, featuring the sexually charged (okay, Disney!!!) scenes between Amanda Stenberg’s Osha and Jacinto. In honor of The Acolyte’s finale, which aired last night on Disney+, here is a list of some of the other Asian men I’ve loved over the years on the big and small screen.

Paolo Montalban - The Definitive Prince Charming

One of my favorite movies, to this day, is the 1997 Whitney Houston produced television movie Cinderella. Even my top 4 on letterboxd proves this. It’s one of my first memories consuming pop culture because of the diversity in casting. Houston saw that this story didn’t have to follow traditional casting norms. You can have a Filipino prince and his parents be a white man and a black woman with no one questioning it! Since I saw this at the young age of 7, I thought this was the norm, when in fact, it was the opposite. It’d be one of those rare moments where my parents would ask, “Filipino?” because they weren’t and still aren’t used to seeing Filipinos on screen. Paolo Montalban as Prince Charming is honestly, charming! He brings an earnestness to the role and has genuine chemistry with the luminous Brandy as the titular Cinderella. Their chemistry was so strong, that they’ve even reprised their roles in the recently released Disney+ movie Descendants: The Rise of Red.

Tuxedo Mask - My First (Animated) Crush

That’s right! We all have one. And my animated crush was Tuxedo Mask from the Sailor Moon series. I mean, who could resist! The mask, so mysterious! The black, so tuxedo!

Dante Basco - Rufioooooooo!

The beauty of film is that it is forever. Which means, that for generations of kids to come, they have the exuberance of Dante Basco captured on screen as Rufio in Steven Spielberg’s Hook. I was one of those kids when I was first introduced to the film in the last 90’s. At first, it didn’t even register to me that Basco is also Filipino-American and I think that’s the beauty of Basco’s performance. He’s just one of the boys, the lost boys. While Basco’s career moved more towards voice over, he made his indelible mark as Zuko in Nickelodeon’s animated Avatar: The Last Airbender.

Charles Melton - This Man is a Movie Star

My first introduction to Charles Milton didn’t come through the hit CW series Riverdale. It was after my time. I’m of the Gossip Girl generation, xoxo. I started to hear about the Korean-American actor as the scene stealer in the hotly anticipated Natalie Portman-Julianne Moore headliner May December. And he didn’t disappoint. Melton completely transforms into a man forced into very adult circumstances, still trying to navigate his adolescence. It’s a deeply felt performance filled with longing. He should have been nominated for an Oscar. During the campaign trail, he exuded glamour with his style, affable charm during his interviews, and pride in his heritage in acceptance speeches. Proving why he should be Hollywood’s new leading man.

Lee Jung-jae - Quit Playing (Squid) Games with my Heart

Netflix probably didn’t realize they had a mega international hit on their hands when they dropped their all Korean language tv series Squid Game on their streaming platform. Studio execs will say a foreign language show will alienate audiences, that there aren’t enough bankable Asian stars even when shows like this and FX’s Shogun have proven otherwise. Squid Game made several stars out of the series, including model turned actor Jung Ho-yeon but Korea was already hot on Lee, already a well established star there, we were just playing catch up. It didn’t take long. Lee won numerous awards for his performance and he easily won my style heart. What an elegant, sexy ass man! Needless to say, I’m very grateful to his Gucci campaign.

Dev Patel - The Man

The Indian-British actor/producer/director has had an already varied and expansive career spanning nearly 2 decades, doing so with just 26 acting credits to his IMDb. Which tells me the industry is simply not using this man enough!

Henry Golding - Crazy Handsome Asian

To me, one of the most magical things a film can pull off is perfect casting. It’s a magic trick if they cast a virtual unknown, dazzling the audience, wondering how they did it. That’s how I felt with the casting of Malaysian-British tv correspondent Henry Golding in the film Crazy Rich Asians. A lot was already riding on this movie adaptation: a big budget, romantic comedy, starring an all Asian cast. It had to do well. Or else studio execs had the “proof” they needed to no longer back Asian-led films. Casting Golding as their leading man could have been a risk but with their heroine Constance Wu and Oscar-worthy supporting performance from Michelle Yeoh, the movie was in good hands. Golding holds his own in his first feature film outing. Effortless and magnetic. Buzzy roles quickly followed in Paul Feig’s A Simple Favor and G.I. Joe franchise Snake Eyes. He’s also taken on more dramatic roles in smaller films, further pushing his acting ability. He continues to develop his craft, further cementing why we fell in love with him in the first place.

Manny Jacinto - The Inspo of this Blog

Everybody say, "Salamat, Manny"! He deserves all the roles. No more getting cut from films! In The Good Place, he played the classic himbo, which could have easily pigeonholded into similar roles but he's shown his versatility in shows like Nine Perfect Strangers where he held his own with, my favorite actress, Nicole Kidman. The Acolyte is another facet he's getting to show us and I hope this momentum carries him to the big screen. I'm rooting for this manny, talaga.

2. this is tough bc i read so much as a kid but some of my ride or dies were the cinderella adaptation Just Ella and also The Two Princesses of Bamarre… ironic since i now avoid fantasy and sci fi maybe i’ve just lost my sense of childhood whimsy

Plague Doctor Cindy!

Hi, I drew this concept art sheet thing shortly after drawing the Butcher!Aurora art and I took a break after that. Sorry I didn't post this one immediately.

Rambling below (TW: medical subject matter like diseases and surgery, death, delusions, and cannibalism)

Meta wise, she started out as a mad scientist for the sake of being a mad scientist by listening to Novocaine by Cree-P and GHOST, and Black Box Warrior-OKULTRA by Will Wood. I just imagined Cinderella going too hard or harsh on Lady Tremaine, her patient/ser-worker/co-star, with her research, experiments, and surgeries out of frustration, stress, and madness. Hell, I would not be surprised if she tried lobotomy at some point during her side jig/job as a doctor.

But ever since I listened to Butcher Vanity by Vane and Flavour Foley, Cinderella later grew to be more than just a plain old mad doctor as I revisited her Screen Universe para concept and explore what her deal is. From why exactly did she fall into this path, to her relationships with the characters related or relevant to her story. She became another tragic character. This time, someone who developed an obsession with finding a cure for the prions after it "ate up" her once villain co-worker friend with in-character or canon compliant delusions.

Cindy with the Bok-su pose is slightly cursed ngl, but it keeps living in my head rent free. The fact that they're both doctors doesn't make it any better ToT

Eldritch Cinderelly (the note says healthy because their true forms's color and brightness changes if they get certain health conditions. In this one, she should have been a bit dimmer and grayer due to the Discontinuation Rot)

Herbs and spices stuffed in the beak like a true plague doctor. Though, Cindy does this for different reasons. Instead of the original reasoning where the herbs will ward off the plague, she does this to replace the smell of burning and rotting flesh with as much fragrance as possible. It also puts her at ease

This is from when Butcher Vanity arc or obsession hit around. It expanded her lore and everything. It was a game changer for this specific para tbh. I think this is about four months after posting the past Cindy rambles shown in the previous screenshots

Ok, this one is from an ID adjacent server, but I feel like this is still a bit relevant to the whole thing

(Also from the ID adjacent server) Ok, this one is kinda complicated since I mentioned another para who had something to do with a different Disney centered subplot that somehow affected the plot and lore of the entire paracosm. Basically, Snow White helped one of her ser-workers to found a cult and... everything went downhill and batshit insane from there. Ruined or fucked over the entire government and all... you may either dig through my casual account for the answer or ask through the Screen Universe blog about it.

Bonus: A joke relevant to the whole Cinderella x Sleeping Beauty ft. prion plague debacle arc/subplot (I found this god damn image from Pinterest and I captioned it as "Cinderella and Aurora")

TLDR: 1950 Disney princess becomes a mad plague doctor, grows into another tragic para, becomes vegan as a trauma response, loses her villain patient to the plague's delusions, goes off into a deep end after burning said patient, despises cannibals, and turns into their world's equivalent to a veteran in a "has seen the origins of modern day problems and the horrors of war" way but the war is the plague from the distant past.
