What are your favourite things you've written

The boring answer is the Bigfoot series and the TLOU au, but its only boring because I've said it so many times because it's true. I love those stories so much and I think my writing in them is better than most of the other things I've written, probably because I cared so much about them.

But I also would like to throw the sad beach fic I posted recently into the list because I really like what I did there capturing the vibes of beach towns and this very specific post-breakup melancholy. And I like how I wrote this particular robin/nancy dynamic in it a lot.

And also Old Soldiers which is just a tiny little thing but it's very strange for fanfiction and I think it does a tremendous amount in very few words and Im very proud of it.

What can you tell me about your wip Haints Holler ?

@wyked-ao3 Haints Holler is a paranormal fiction/romance set in Appalachia in a fictive town/county called Puck.

We follow Winnie, a witch sealed to the mountains herself along with the matriarch of her family and all the women before her. In events prior to the story, she found herself bound to the spirit/minor god known as Forest, who had called the woods and mountains around her holler home for centuries.

Winnie, Forest (begrudgingly) and the rest of the Kidd clan attempt to solve a sudden series of murders and missing person/animal cases that are rocking the town and finding a way to fight a not so dead dark entity that has risen again.

The idea itself has been in the works for years but the podcast Old Gods of Appalachia really pushed me to explore the idea of “alternate Appalachia” and the idea of dark things under the mountain.

(It is truly a masterpiece and I would recommend it to any HP lovecraft/cuthullu horror fans as well as people who enjoy paranormal in general.)

The Kidd family is (very loosely) based on my paternal family and some of the stories I grew up hearing as well as superstitions that have been shared with me through the years.

There’s a magic system that is based around knots and quilting and a holler “quilting circle” that often takes care of things around the holler.

Forest is a little shit who lusts for power and a physical body and gets (rightfully) stuck cleaning up human messes.

Anthropomorphic mountain spirit who is in love with granny Kidd.

Southern/Appalachian shade being thrown by old women on porches.

Murder.

All dogs/animals mentioned live.

Accidental life partner to lovers.

Yeah, that pretty much covers it 😂 any other specific questions, I’ll gladly answer.

being someone who's passionate about their interests when you're a horror fan really is a special layer of hell because every interaction you have with another person where the conversation turns to your hobbies and personal entertainments is a trial where if you show too much unrepentant glee at getting an opportunity to talk about your preferred subject you get to watch them mentally move you onto their list of untrustworthy individuals to avoid in the future in real time

this is just my opinion but i think any good media needs obsession behind it. it needs passion, the kind of passion that's no longer "gentle scented candle" and is now "oh shit the house caught on fire". it needs a creator that's biting the floorboards and gnawing the story off their skin. creators are supposed to be wild animals. they are supposed to want to tell a story with the ferocity of eating a good stone fruit while standing over the sink. the same protective, strange instinct as being 7 and making mud potions in pink teacups: you gotta get weird with it.

good media needs unhinged, googling-at-midnight kind of energy. it needs "what kind of seams are invented on this planet" energy and "im just gonna trust the audience to roll with me about this" energy. it needs one person (at least) screaming into the void with so much drive and energy that it forces the story to be real.

sometimes people are baffled when fanfic has some stunning jaw-dropping tattoo-it-on-you lines. and i'm like - well, i don't go here, but that makes sense to me. of fucking course people who have this amount of passion are going to create something good. they moved from a place of genuine love and enjoyment.

so yeah, duh! saturday cartoons have banger lines. random street art is sometimes the most precious heart-wrenching shit you've ever seen. someone singing on tiktok ends up creating your next favorite song. youtubers are giving us 5 hours of carefully researched content. all of this is the impossible equation to latestage capitalism. like, you can't force something to be good. AI cannot make it good. no amount of focus-group testing or market research. what makes a story worth listening to is that someone cares so much about telling it - through dance, art, music, whatever it takes - that they are just a little unhinged about it.

one time my friend told me he stayed up all night researching how many ways there are to peel an orange. he wrote me a poem that made me cry on public transportation. the love came through it like pith, you know? the words all came apart in my hands. it tasted like breakfast.

i love when ppl ask writers questions about their ocs and they're like "uhh i think so?" as if they didn't invent them. like they're just mild acquaintances we have

Some small details for a character learning sword fighting for the first time:

- sore wrists

- blisters on hands

- every movement opens you up to be hit

- they will hit the tops of their arm and own sides with the sword while learning

- there is a primal sixth sense when you know you’re being toyed with

And, for your typically nonviolent characters.

You don’t aim for the swords. You aim for the person holding the sword.

It sounds so obvious but needs to be accepted. Actively. When holding a sword you have to understand you’re attacking another person. Even to block you have to aim your blocks at the other person or they won’t be strong enough to actually protect yourself.

What Am I Writing These Days? #3

It's been waaaay too long since I last did one of these. To be fair, I spent most of this year writing one story in particular(which you find [url=https://archiveofourown.org/works/48347773]here[/url]) so there haven't been a lot of new ideas coming in.

I have been very slowly adding on to Storm Kids; it's not as interesting as it was four years ago when I started it! I updated with a new chapter on AO3 recently though, and I know where I'm going with it. I'll finish! I will!

Updates are also incoming for Moon Age, I swear, but I don't think I can muster a lot of energy for DBZ after I spent so many months writing for the Big Bang. It's still an AU I love a lot.

I've been writing a lot of Kamen Rider fic, but basically none of it is presentable... I'm deeply grateful to everyone who reads and leaves kudos on my Goto/Eiji fic, y'all make me feel more confident! At the moment I'm doing pre-work for some post-canon OOO fic, in the form of simple character interactions. I'm determined to write something about Izumi Shingo, but his character moments are countable on one hand so I'm kinda winging it(pun intended). My main goals writing OOO fic is to explore Eiji living without Ankh, as I've noticed a lack of that in fandom. I want the OOO family to grieve but also live, and to show how Ankh touched all of their lives.

I've been writing self-indulgent Zero-One fic in the form of FuwaHiden domestic fluff. Whenever I write something and it's not presentable, I just tell myself it's training. I think my feelings about Hibiki are gonna force me to write post-canon fic for that as well(whyyy is everything going so wrooong??).

I've been asked(By Anthony DP Mann) to write something about Takeshi Hongo. I have a few ideas bouncing around in my head now that I've seen Shin Kamen Rider and more episodes of the old show(thank you Keelin for the livestream back in May). At the moment I have: A dialogue prompt that seems to only lead to smut("Can you feel this?") and a couple of ideas stemming from fanart I saw(70s Riders meet their Shin counterparts and some bug love bites). I've also been pitched a western-esque story about an aging Hongo looking for a meaningful end, but I'd rather hand that off to someone who knows him better. In general, I just don't think I know Mr Hongo well enough to write him yet.

Something that's going well(almost too well) is my Stray Kids Power Rangers AU. It's made for a surprisingly fun sandbox to try a lot of my ideas, but it's also a little hard to focus. I've started sharing the story with some friends via email, as I don't intend to put it up on A03 until I finish Storm Kids. Another unintended consequence of creating a tokusatsu-verse is that I'm now determined to make Monsta X into Kamen Riders. For both of those I still have a lot of development work to do(designing costumes and weapons, creating catchphrases, poses and special moves, etc.) but like. It's so fun.
