I've been going through a medical emergency in the form of a toothache turned tooth infection I've been currently taking care of with antibiotics

Since getting to the dentist fucking sucks and last time we tried it got us nowhere but back to square one, I'm hoping that the antibiotics will help for now

1. Plato and Victoria

2. Tugger and Misto

I know it’s basic but like….look at them…..my special guys…..I adore watching them in the background of things, I’ve watched so many productions at this point, but one of my favorite iterations of their dynamics has to be the Paris 1990 production. They both seem really equal in that version in a way that I don’t really see too often. They invented being silly and goofy and I love them very much.

3. Deductive Logico and Inspector Irratino

My favorite detectives ever. They’re SO cute

These are a collection of Claire Clairmont's letters. I wanted to be true to her voice, as she is often the most muted in many adaptations of the story- and it is really her story, more than anyone else's.

Note that for the Frankenstein text I selected, I chose the original 1818 text, purely because this is the original, the least edited, and in my opinion, the best. Far too many people only know the 1831 version, which is so far removed from that original summer I feel it is irrelevant.

After my dad suggested this story as the basis for a show to me back in 2015 (my god, 8 years ago???) this article was the very first thing I read about the Shelleys and Byron, and their summer at Diodati, and it got me hooked. I recommend giving it a read. It's great writing, and the sort of thing that NYT no longer writes nearly frequently enough anymore.

I immediately purchased the following three books, cited as sources by that article:

Byron in Love: A Short Daring Life

Young Romantics: The Shelleys, Byron, and Other Tangled Lives

Byron and the Romantics in Switzerland, 1816

Followed by like... hundreds more books, articles, etc. But those three are a great start! If anything, I'd add this book, purely because it's more well known and referenced than those three, and takes a more Byron-centric view that, well, gels more with the portrayal of events in my show.

THE YEAR OF CONTENT-TENT-TENT!!!

For reasons I don't completely understand myself, I've decided that this year, I'm going to attempt to post at least once a day for the whole year. It's not a New Year's resolution (I should honestly probably resolve to spend less time online, but, LOL ! What can you do?). If I had to pick a why, I guess I'd say I really want this year to be a Bob Ross year.

Bob Ross had an almost magical ability to make the world seem like a simple and restful place. It didn't matter what was happening at the moment, or what you were struggling with at the time because "Everyday is a good day when you paint!" Well, I don't paint. I enjoy crochet, and reading, but I really enjoy non-solitary pursuits, and while I also intend to make this a year of strengthening my IRL relationships and building new ones, posting on Tumblr is like painting for me. I get to interact with people without worrying about the impression I'm giving, or about going on too long about my blorbos, and well, "Everyday is a good day when you talk about your blorbos".

The posts will be whatever I feel like that day (although, if I reblog, I will do my best to make sure I'm adding to the conversation, even just a little). There's no real end goal to this for me- I'm not even sure I'll be able to stick to it for the whole year- but it's an idea that popped into my head and sounded interesting. I hope it'll encourage people to interact with me more, and help me find more blogs to follow. Maybe doing this will even help me to branch out beyond ATLA (not a goal, but if it happens, cool). So here's to a new year! May it be a Bob Ross year for us all.

You know, an interesting tumblr transformation that's happened gradually, and which I've seen no one talk about: ask-culture has essentially dropped off to nothing.

By which I mean, asks used to be WAY more of the tumblr economy. They used to be more common to send, and receive, and see. They were integral to the collaborative, forum-like behavior of old tumblr communities, not even to speak on the HUGE number of ask-blogs that used to exist to only be interacted with in ask-form.

I'm not saying this in a vying-for-attention way but instead in an observational way: I used to get way way more asks in like 2015, even with a fraction of my follower count. I wonder if it's due to the homogenization of social media sites? There's a lot more of this divide between "content creator" and "consumer" instead of just a bunch of peer blogs who would talk to each other. "Asks" aren't really a thing on twitter, are they? And as I understand it, the closest thing to an "ask" on instagram or tiktok would be a creator screenshotting some comment and responding to it in a new reel or video or whatever those content mediums are. Are asks just too tumblr-specific? Is that aspect of the site culture dying out as more and more people converge to using all their social media sites in the same way?

i agree with you that sunday is a better musical but do you think it’s possible you’re getting a little heated over a silly internet poll? like this isn’t an award show, there’s no prestige here it doesn’t matter who wins. treating it like a high stakes issue when it’s literally just a poll on a tumblr blog is a little much right? if the “wrong” show wins its not like the world will go “okay fuck sondheim take away his accolades the people of tumblr decided it.” especially since you seem to be aware you’re talking to kids, calling them idiots for enjoying a different show more feels really unnecessary

I'm a teacher, specifically a music teacher. Sometimes kids need to be told they're idiots. It's not an insult- idiocy isn't something to be protected and harbored, it's merely ignorance, and ignorance is something easily amended. If you're nice about it, most of the time, the student doesn't understand the gravity of their ignorance- if you're blunt, and honest, and use words like 'idiot', then the reality kicks in.

If you think I'm being mean to my students (and by using the same language here, to my followers), think again. I'm critical, because I respect my audience, in both. If I treated my students with kid gloves, couching everything in soft words, that would not be respectful, that would be diminutive and derogatory. I don't coddle, and I don't condone coddling. Grow the fuck up and get off anon, say the criticisms you want to say without hiding. I do. I'm an adult, and don't mask that fact on this site; I will speak freely on here, especially in regards to topics about which I harbor strong passions.

I don't care if it's not an important award, instead just a silly internet poll, it's still hundreds of people voicing an opinion about what the "best musical" is based on 1) a lack of adequate information about both competitors, and 2) a fierce loyalty to fandom for the sake of fandom. And that's an insult to a great man, and to add insult to injury, it further diminishes the incredibly important nature and message of the show itself.

There are plenty of shows that could win against Sunday, and I'd understand and accept that. Phantom, Les Miserables, Hamilton, Rent, to name a few; hugely impactful musicals that have strong scores, stories, characters, and have stayed the course strongly, more successfully than Sunday. There are even some shows that don't necessarily fit all of these arbitrary qualifications that I would understand- for example, The Drowsy Chaperone if pitted against Sunday would be an interesting match that Sunday might lose, given that they're both introspective odes to art, and Drowsy in particular is specifically about the theatre, thereby more relatable for audiences. Or Sweeney Todd, which pushes more boundaries than any other show in existence in literally every facet. Heck, even Dear Evan Hansen, which I hate, might stand solely on its strong message of the difficulties surrounding mental health.

But an Internet musical that's merely slightly clever in its meta nature, following the trends established by the hyper meta media people seem to love lately, is not a contender. Voting for that because you don't know the other option is disingenuous, and voting if you know both is ignorant.

If it were high stakes, I wouldn't be talking about it on Tumblr, ffs. This is the low stakes site for low stakes things. There's a reason I'm sitting front and center at the first public performance of his last show, and there is a reason my own musical, a piece a decade in the making, is looking to make its own local premiere in my hometown next season. It's because of Sondheim, and his magic, and how strongly he inspired me. And I'm going to defend that tooth and nail until I die.
