Kevin has spent his entire life serving, whether it was his father, his god, or strexcorp, he has never been able to want for himself. Now we see him want, we’re seeing him force people to listen, getting people’s attention for himself, he’s not doing this because a corporation is using him as the company’s image, he’s doing this because he wants to, as he put it, tell his side of the story. He is doing this as a child. He didn’t come in guns blazing, he didn’t threaten anyone, he was holding a knife like a lifeline but according to Tamika was making no move to harm anyone, and we don’t know what happened next, but cutting the wires isn’t the same as slitting someone’s throat.

He’s here as a child, a supposed symbol of innocence, to tell his story. His anger and pain are violent but right now they are just sad, the loss of childhood to abuse and continuing to lose your sense of self and freedom to others for your entire life isn't shown as anything more or less than a child saying "all i want is to want something for myself". He wants to be heard, by the town that never saw him grow up, never saw him with his friends or old woman Josephine, never heard his early broadcasts (apart from Triptych), he’s begging to be heard in the town that has only ever seen him as evil incarnate, he’s going to the man who is outright terrified of him, asking him to not be scared even though he has reason to be. All of his lines are so simple, it is a childlike loss, it’s the quiet resolution to what has happened while still wanting different.

You should look up Ask You Father

It's a fiction podcast! Its sci-fi! It explores the definition of Artificial Personhood without dehumanizing large swathes of people!

It opens on an astronaut, Lem and an AI, mikey, waking up on their deep space mission finding themselves out of fuel and ten light years from home. Together they have to find a way out of this mess

Their only way to contact earth (or lem's husband and kids) are limited capacity, hard drives sent back home faster than light. Lem gets questions from his kids in short audio messages that he can reply to, Mikey gets Data back from earth. Lem and Mikey are friends, but being stuck together and stranded out here they argue alot, like about almost everything

Mikey, the AI, is played by Kevin R. Free and was not sent on this mission entirely of his own accord.

Also he has complex feelings on art and food and stuff, I know that's an odd thing to point out but it means the world to me

The sound design is great and, friends, I mean that because a lot of audio dramas leave me with a headache (affectionate)

If you like AI stories or if you like Kevin R. Free's voice acting everyone here is giving a fabulous performance and the story is gah it's just so good

it was such an. interesting choice for them to write kevin "dying" because of the boy and having it be a dramatic moment and then in the next episode he's just back up. no explanation or reference to his "death". and cecil for some reason thinks he's with lauren now. "lauren turning into a god was last minute" yeah we could tell in this one

they dont give us any explanation for the boys motives in this one. because in Rifts it makes sense that hes being mentored by Mother Lauren because its his goal to kill the other Kevin. and then they give us an ooo he maybe did that! then in 250 that Kevin is. fine and ohh the boy snaps free of Mother Lauren's control. somehow. because that mentoring, despite making sense, was just her mind control i guess and now he's trying to. kill her. for some reason. honestly its like they straight up forgot that the boy's whole thing was wanting to kill Kevin despite spending two episodes on that and turned it into the Kevin knew him and the boy were gonna work together to defeat Lauren the whole time!

They are both radio hosts and central figures in their respective towns

Cecil/Night Vale are purple-coded, Kevin/Desert Bluffs are yellow-coded. Opposite ends of the color wheel, complementary colors.

Night Vale is very associated with night and the moon, Desert Bluffs/The Smiling God are very much day and sun

Cecil has mommy issues, Kevin has daddy issues

Cecil was prophesized to be a radio host, Kevin is a prophet

Cecil's husband, Carlos, is a scientist, Kevin's partner, Charles, is a theologist

Night Vale won against Strex, the original Desert Bluffs did not

They both suppress their emotions, for different reasons/it looks different (a lot of denial and overriding how they feel)

Stuff about my Cecil and Kevin specifically (non-canon):

Cecil is an octopus, Kevin is a spider (both 8-limbed animals)

Cecil loves hot coffee only and hates iced coffee, Kevin is a coldbrew fan

Cecil's mother severely neglected him, Kevin's father was super controlling

Cecil never knew his father, Kevin never knew his mother

Cecil's is void gender, while Kevin is sun/orange juice gender

Cecil's psychic eye abilities work, Kevin's are severely hindered

It was Cecil's fate to be a radio host, Kevin wanted to be a radio host (because he was inspired by Cecil as a kid 🥺)

I am sure there are many more, but yeah, I think counterpart is a more appropriate word for them :)
