the thing with racism in supernatural is that you can look at any aspect of the show and you WILL find something racist. whether in-universe (where you can additionally differ with hunter culture, monsters+lore, fetishisation), writing, casting, production.
like only scratching the surface of the anti black racism with the casting is like:
90% of black supernatural characters are antagonists with insane potential who got killed off (or ignored in raphaels case) the second they finished an amazing build-up for a character arc (gordon, jake s2, henriksen, uriel, raphael, the vampire alpha)
5% of black supernatural characters are 1-episode side characters or minor characters that had about 2% of their potential used (rufus, missouri, the hunter couple)
last 5% of black supernatural characters had 1-2 scenes where they functioned either 1. as hoodoo/voodoo plot device (playthings, crossroad blues) or 2. random demon (also antagonists)
and this is with black spn characters making up like. 5% of all spn characters
#*#if you asked someone to name 5 arab/native american/east asian/south asian/etc supernatural characters they'd come up blank#also the major problem with this is that its a Pattern. its one thing to have a black antagonist and its another to have#10 out 15 black characters be antagonists#+ the only angels with black vessels were antagonists

RYO PAUL RAMBLING
Something I find so fascinating about Ryo Paul is how Ryo playing him changes the dynamic of Paul with everyone else. Ryo’s Paul feels much less intimidating than say Dan Paul or even Victor Paul. He’s tall, but physically smaller in stature and more soft spoken, even when he’s angry. He feels like a scared kid with more anger than he knows what to do with.
Bob is a much more imposing character compared to him. He’s loud, abrasive, and will say whatever he feels. He doesn’t care who he offends. He’s a very in charge type of person.
It makes sense that Paul would follow him. He’s this big tough all American boy and especially during the period and where they lived, that’s the type of person Paul wanted to be. It’s probably what his parents raised him wanting as well. For Asian families in America in the 60s where they may be some of the only Asian families in the neighborhood, assimilation was often a huge priority. The idea of fitting in and having that “perfect American life”. The model minority myth played into this idea greatly. East Asians especially were seen as the “whitest people of color, if that makes sense.
Bob let him into their group, full of guys who are what Paul aspired to be (ie white). So he followed Bob and it gave him a pretty nice life. The town respected him because of the company he kept in comparison to the greasers. It didn’t matter that he wasn’t white was when he was surrounded by his friends. That made him seem like one of the “good ones”. Living on the west side and having the appearance of having money helped this as well because it meant his future was bright. He would have opportunities.
When Bob died, that’s the first time you really see him in a leadership position. I don’t think under any other circumstances the socs would’ve followed him like that. But he used their anger and gave them a target and because of that he was able to rally the socs together for the common enemy
#I’m asian american and grew up in a predominantly white area#so I have many feelings about ryo paul#ryo Paul#paul holden#the outsiders musical#soc headcanon#headcanon#rambling#character analysis

I despise any narrative that positions social progressivism as a western concept. why is every immigrant narrative about escaping from the terrible inherent conservatism of the backwards culture your family comes from and being saved by america's unique progressivism. just this disgusting pinkwashing that is exactly the same as any other narrative claiming that the west invented civilization and all those third world barbarians are only just now beginning to learn it from them. america's enemies do not have a monopoly on social conservatism. white people did not invent queer acceptance or anything else of value. death to america idk
#sorry out of character for me to have any political opinions of my own I know. this just got me unreasonably upset#maybe I am just incoherently trying to justify a purely emotional reaction. I don't think so though#I do not relate to any story about your asian immigrant parents being conservative and evil#and the american values you've learned saving you from their backwards culture#like idk we're not the ones sending our kids to conversion therapy bible camp#of course it's possible for parents to suck in ways that are informed by their traditional values#this is not a fucking. foreign thing though. you americans can be just as bad#narcissus's echoes

A cosplayer I'm friends with on Instagram often vagueposts on his stories with complaints about other fans cosplaying Meenah or Damara on account of it being racist to do so. (None of the cosplayers in question had done any... questionable makeup choices of any sort, they just had the usual light gray body paint approximating canon. The friend in question is white himself, as am I.) Do you think there's a genuine issue with people cosplaying characters like those ones?
I'm genuinely curious on your insights; I came to your blog for this since I find your posts both about the alpha trolls and the racism especially with them, but also in Homestuck overall, to be very well written. If this feels too much like discourse to you, you're free to delete it. (You askbox rules made me a bit nervous ^^)
This is a loaded question, which I am getting the sense is... A controversial one, and I do not feel equipped to give a solid yes or no answer on this as someone who is not a cosplayer and doesn't really know anything about the scene.
However, I do have to ask... Why specifically Damara and Meenah? There's an infinite amount of characters who are white, even within Homestuck. Why specifically dress up as characters who are without a single doubt not white? That is tacky to me. This isn't even an anime situation where it doesn't really matter until people start pinning their eyes back, Meenah and Damara - Damara especially - are depicted in a way that is straight up racist, and also some of the few characters in the comic who are just straight up not white. Like, you have other options. Most of the characters in the comic are white. Why them?
#a couple clarifications. 1.) i am Not white#and 2.) once again i DO NOT GO HERE im just speaking from my experience as someone whose race is regularly used as a costume#thats the angle im coming at this from#frankly the idea of a white person dressing up as damara especially makes me cringe. leave that to the east asian fans to fix idfk.#because at that point youre not just wearing the clothes of a character you are wearing a caricature of an east asian person#and thats not much better from going to spirit halloween and picking up a costume of a white person's approximation of a native american#to me#homestuck#cw racism#?#nekro.sms

Weirdly enough, Ray has a human form as well!
Lore under the read more.
Ray was born as his fox form after being created from Dr. Akira Watanabe's DNA and the genes of a female Vulpine, an ancient race of fox people who existed before human civilization began.
This created a hybrid who had some human genes leftover that didn't really express themselves.
After Ray meets Roman and gets to know him and his skills better, Ray asks Roman to use his Genetifyer device to give him a human form, just like Roman.
Roman is reluctant at first, but he eventually caves and uses the Genetifyer to "exaggerate" the human genes in Ray so that he develops an alternate human form he can transform into. Calling himself Ray Jones and denoting himself as an Asian American, he now has a form to disguise himself. But for what purpose, you may be wondering?
To join The Council, in the hopes that he can get Roman's inventions patented without them knowing that it's from him.
--------
I'm tired of the lame gray coats. I'll probably switch to the white lab coats.

finished watching netflix atla! i think the hate is unjustified lol like all that hate seems a little too intense for what i think the show missed. it didn't hit all the same notes as the original show, yeah, so i'm not sure it quite succeeds as an adaptation, but as a standalone show it's pretty good. and i might have some gripes with the characterization, but there was love in the casting and in the costumes and the world, and that goes a long way for me.
#even tho the costumes DID look reallt new lol#rei rambles#natla#as a show i'd give it like a 7.5 or 8 out of 10#as an adaptation... 5? 6?#the pacing was kinda weird and katara could be meaner but she wasnt terrible#sokka having a confirmed Thing with suki undermines the way his *first* girlfriend became the moon but that's also whatever#i actually LOVED the way they gave more to iroh and zuko about lu ten#and i heard ppl were mad abt azula which is like... why? she barely appears????#as for ozai being more emotional--i GET the gripe i do. really. i just. i am not immune to daniel dae kim okay.#been weak for him since i saw him in hawaii five-o and lost okay#first big asian man crush. only handsome asian man on north american tv for a very long time.#im okay with them humanizing ozai if it means more daniel dae kim ngl#narratively sure yeah it sjpports the zuko's and azula's characters better if he unequivocally sucks#but if they're gonna give him more acting meat i'm not gonna mind in the SLIGHTEST#but anyways yeah they v clearly spotlighted iroh & zuko over some team avatar stuff and i'd be more about it if it wasnt done well#but i actually liked it so i dont mind at all#zuko and iroh were super great

I want to write a novel with a largely POC cast, and I'm looking for opinions and feedback before writing the first draft.
The main poc identities that I'm looking for feedback and input on are:
Native American/Indigenous Americans
Black Americans
Japanese Americans (or immigrants to America)
Muslim Americans or Muslims who live in America, especially of Middle Eastern ancestry
If you aren't part of these cultures but still want to see your culture represented, I want to hear it. There may or may not be space for a character in the draft, but I will write down anything you say for future works too.
I want to write a. urban fantasy novel about queer werewolves and fae (with a diverse cast of both supernatural and human characters) but as a half-white, half-Latina author living in the USA I want some input on what you as a POC person would like to see more or less of in fiction. I want to hear about your culture and the type of characteristics that you do or definitely DO NOT want to see in a fictional character. I'm apprehensive about giving animalistic traits (because werewolves) to POC characters since in the USA there is a long history of propaganda giving such traits to people of color to dehumanize them, so I would like to primarily discuss what exactly I'm thinking for that and why, and if you're okay with the way I want to write it, if you want to set some boundaries, or if it's a hard no.
I mainly use DMs on Tumblr, but I also use Twitter DMs and I made a Discord account specifically for this. Mind you, I don't know how to use Discord so you'll probably need to explain it to me first. Thank you!
