Want to watch an Asian Les Misérables, but don't know which to pick?
Here are some options!
Les Misérables Peking Opera | 2 hours 12 minutes
There's action! Parkour! Cosette and Jean Valjean being a sweet family! Marius dressed up as Enjolras! Valvert content!
Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L1Dhb9x6w3g&t=1081s
Mandarin Les Misérables play soundtrack | 1 hour
It's an original stage adaptation that was made in collaboration with France! Because of this, it's super accurate, and the characters sometimes code switches to French. It's so accurate, in some parts they just quote passages from the book!
Plus the songs and music are so calming!
Unfortunately I don't have the full footage of it, only the soundtrack ⬇️
Link: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_kmdPwVy_md0_liubPYnBKmAp5uZTnT9o4&si=ilXnx-hPVkmcsCr4
Kundan | 2 hours 36 minutes
It's. So. Good!! Do you want to learn more about the Quit India Movement and the political state of India during the British colonial rule?
Do you want to see how other countries in the world incorporated the themes of social injustice and revolution? No one does it better than Kundan! Goated.

Iranian Musical production | 1 hour 32 minutes
Do you want to watch the famous musical of Les Misérables through the eyes of Iranian theatre? You get to see how they portray stage art, costuming, singing, and much more!
It is definitely a very unique adaptation of the famous stage production!
Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=03tXbvE7HZA
Jean Valjean monogatari | 1 hour 25 minutes
No comment (because I haven't watched it yet sadly!)
But I hear the animation can be unintentionally goofy! And that it's an alright adaptation. That's a good enough sign for me!
Link: https://archive.org/details/lesmis_202102
Japanese Ballet production
You guessed it, it's a ballet adaptation of Les Misérables! What more is there to say about it? Watch it!
Unfortunately, there's not a full production of it uploaded, but there are long clips of them in the latter halves of these rehearsal videos. There are longer clips the further down in the playlist you get ⬇️
Link: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLde0XoLxyblVGUDxdjBgPjFjCMiohKJgJ&si=zQn_BNUmUYRnwZwb
Owarinaki tabiji | 2 hours 23 minutes
Welcome to Les Misérables set in contemporary Japan! The movie begins with Jean Valjean stealing laundry, and an earthquake happening; a trauma which pushes him to become a better man. Also there's Valvert content.
What's more Japanese than laundry theft and earthquakes?
Link: https://www.bilibili.tv/en/video/2047742481
Les Misérables (1992) | 11 hours
Even though this was a French production, the animation was made in North Korea. So if you're interested in how the art may look, you can go and explore! Plus, if you're learning French, perhaps this experience would be a good language practice!
Link: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLBqc73oQ4bMPU1KXsTg3QwzbTidZgjJDh&si=0o8gou_QpXpl4fsL
1996 Korean TV series
Les Misérables set in 70s-80s Korea! I haven't watched the whole way through due to the buffer time, but so far, it follows the story quite closely, all the while finding unique, creative ways in telling the story!
Link: https://programs.sbs.co.kr/drama/thief/vod/74918/22000462834
Korean Original Musical soundtrack | 42 minutes
Javert has an electric guitar accompanying him! I sometimes like to imagine him with a literally electric guitar while he's on the stage.
This musical sounds very modern and is super different from the sounds of Boublil and Schonberg's musical adaptation.
Link: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_lk2Bsybb7A-TjgcbtPX3RBGJd_DJ-jpaE&si=BIoMfMXqwtrw-J6q
Les Misérables (1974) | 12 hours
There's no English subtitles, so I haven't watched it (yet)!
I have seen some translated scenes, and wow, does it look beautiful! If you can understand Arabic, or don't mind watching without understanding the dialogue, then please have a look and tell me about it!
I would LOVE to hear what people have to say about this adaptation!
Link: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLFbmr0IDXgqsyfkOOY3eH4YbMVfmcLf0t&si=2ijFa11N3n5Jo9ay
Sefiller | 1 hour 25 minutes
We have seen many AUs being explored, but have we ever thought about MariusIsChampmathieu'sSon!AU and JeanValjeanDoesn'tConfessInTime!AU?
Well, worry not, this most famous retelling of Les Misérables in Türkiye has got you covered! Watch this to find out why this story became so famous in the country!
Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bxb-mEt5ZyQ
Ngọn Cỏ Gió Đùa (1989) | 2 hours and 41 minutes
Set in late colonial Vietnam, based from the book of the same name with the author having been born during the colonial period and grew up with Vietnam after the French had left, we can see how Les Misérables looks through the eyes of a country who was a victim of the French Empire.
Link: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLOTJoiItzQApxi2IhK64kqYF_6GiyrLy8&si=tb5bzWUaeho7pO2s
Ngọn Cỏ Gió Đùa (2013 TV series) | 30 hours
Because the above movie was a success, they brought the same director in to make a longer, more detailed exploration of this world.
This might be the most famous adaptation of Les Misérables known in Vietnam.

Enjolras from my modern Teachers!AU ☺️ finally found a place to put half-Korean Enjolras in. He teaches History and English.
Like any Asian kid, he went through the bowlcut hair style phase. Unlike most of us, however, he didn't really grow out of it...😭 this is basically baby Enjolras:

#Enjolras with a fuck ass bob is my favourite type of Enjolrai#that and Asian Enjolrai in general ☺️#les mis#les mis fanart#enjolras#syrup art tag

“In the dark times, should the stars also go out?”

an amnesic ex-revolutionary wakes up to a world he barely remembers and the only way to unlock his memories is a drunk who wouldn't even meet his eyes
disco elysium AU where enjolras is harry and grantaire is (a more volatile, less composed and patient) kim. if ur interested, please see below!!!!

left: the sketch that started the AU brainworms. honestly the idea started because of an accident
right: close-up on enjolras
[tw for brief mentions of violence!! be warned. also spoilers for DE]
okk so my initial idea is that this AU happens some months after the revolution in revachol. though keep in mind this AU is only very loosely based on the actual DE canon. am talking about only keeping the vibes.
enj and the les amis are participants in the revolution, but like in canon they fail. in this au permets tu doesnt happen, and instead the amis (with the exception of R) die by firing squad. somehow the bullets dont kill enj, but his injuries were so severe he gets amnesia. R saves him. he carries him off back to his home, and nurses him privately because enj is a wanted criminal. enj stays asleep.
r submerges in alcohol to forget the pain of losing his friends. due to his benders he does manage to forget long lapses (just like harry! lol)
then months later, enj finally wakes up. he remembers R, but only his name. basically R gets a do-over with enjolras. enjolras then gets all the painful bits harry gets with dora (feeling the pain but not remembering for what), except with his friends. he tries to pry answers from R, but he wouldnt say anything. R thinks it's better if he found the answers himself.
then they explore/investigate the city post-war. it's full of scars and wounds and it unearths more and more painful memories but at least enj will know why his heart pangs whenever he hears the tinny sound of a familiar drinking song through the radio.
like in LM canon, marius lives (but R doesnt know this). I imagine he takes the role of Jean vicquemare, but he’s not as bitter
#les mis#enjolras#grantaire#enjoltaire#(?) kinda but nothing romantic happens in this au#IM GOING TO STOP USING HALO ICONOGRAPHY I SWEAR!!! but since enj is kinda loosely based on Kim please let me have this#I wanted to give enj the classic tired asian look. so theres that#haterart#yes can you tell I started replaying DE

Hello pirate friends! Those of you who know me through Rusty Quill's Trice Forgotten know that I love to write queer and trans Asian pirates destroying colonies with science and also homoerotic swordfighting.
If you like those things in combination with radical, genre-devouring new science-fiction musicals created as a "fuck you" to the white men who've made millions casting East and Southeast Asians as barbarians and lotus flowers, look no further than ASIAN PIRATE MUSICAL!
APM is created by a group of 6 trans/genderqueer/female artists from across diasporas including Malaysia, the Philippines, Jamaica, Japan, Thailand and New Zealand. We love musical theatre, but we want fun, epic adventure stories written by us, about us and casting us. For tone, think the queer humour of Our Flag Meets Death meets the political world-building of The Expanse, with an experimental, orchestral blend of traditional instruments, 21st century Asian pop and indierock.
Here's a bit of a call-to-arms for us as we need some help giving this project its sea-legs.
If you're in London, UK 21-22nd November 2024, we're having a 2-day CONCERT at the Pleasance Theatre. Tickets are £14 and we need to sell out to break even ( ;; yay theatre) Click here to buy tickets.
We want everyone to be able to access this show for free, online. To do that we're recording a studio cast album (think Hadestown's early demo albums, or the EPIC! musical). We've currently got a crowdfunder going, and any donation - however small - is much appreciated. We're at £1,265/£5,000 and that just covers basic costs. Click here to go to the crowdfunder.
If you don't have the ability to financially contribute at this time, we would super appreciate any kind of social media help -> sending people who might be interested our way, reblogs/retweets and shares on Instagram/Tiktok go an incredibly long way in the development of musicals. We're @ AsianPirateMus in most places.
If you want to learn more about Asian Pirate Musical, including more songs and our social media links, please head over to this linktree and follow us where you can!
If you made it this far, thank you! Here's our asian-pop inspired ballad in which we make a historical old man have homoerotic thoughts and feelings for his Emperor.

Just got back from watching a production of Les Mis and yeah man to love another person really is to see the face of God 😭😭😭
#my favourite musical. last time i saw it was in..... 2015? around there#i have... some criticisms for this production but it made me cry a lot and left me dehydrated so it's still a win!#les mis#ramblings of a bystander#ok but seriously who decided to cast what looked like two south east asian sisters as child cosette and child eponine#and then adult eponine was also south east asian but cosette was NOT and was a full white woman#bizarre choice. we have so many characters to keep track of you should not be confusing my ability to follow them#a bit TOO many extras and too much activity on stage during sort of ensemble scenes#that made it a bit difficult to locate who was actually speaking/singing a couple times#javert was just a touch too stiff in his body language. actually a few missed body language opportunities#that would have helped clarify what was happening I'm just lucky to really know it all already#REALLY didn't like fantine's characterisation and delivery on a few lines but otherwise she was fine#also i can't believe enjolras first appeared on stage NOT wearing red and then had a costume change for the les amis cafe meetup#just put him in red straight away? why did grantaire also have a costume change to completely different color scheme at one point.#...it WAS a good production I'm just nitpicking. because it's my fave so i have OPINIONS#jean valjean was fantastic!#anyway. I'm gonna make myself some dinner now. and then see what I've missed

I'm sorry I've been inactive. I've been going through a lot, but still think of you and I want you to know I'm taking care of myself, the best way I can.
I couldn't write anything for days, but I've been listening to music and drawing flowers on my old school book.
Not going to lie, I'm not a great artist, but I practice now and then and there's a slow, but visible progress.
I may be writing poetry again very soon, who knows...

amitoufo he is carbondated
It's the Year of the Snake. Destiny 2's Heresy just came out. But this ain't about her. I sit on your shoulder, I am your xiaoren.
I'm Taiwanese! Let's carbon date The Drifter!
Lightbearers retain their semantic memory (facts, concepts, ideas) and procedural memory (memory of how to do things) of their original life before death. This is implied from game/lore instances of Guardians with unique accents, ethnic coding, memory of languages that are obscure post-Collapse, even cases of Guardians retaining pre-rez war PTSD. It is outright confirmed by Sen-Aret, a Guardian who- due to the sheer age of her remains or some error by her Ghost- was raised with only the knowledge she had in life, and had to learn about modern weapons/language from other Guardians.
Why does this mean anything? It means that the way a Guardian prefers to dress, talk, and generally behave tells you where they came from pre-rez!
Aside from his voice actor being Vietnamese, his entry in the official cookbook is banh mi, a Vietnamese dish, and his clothes are Chinese, which would point to him being Hoa, the Han people of Vietnam. (He also wraps his clothes in an orientation specific to corpses, because he doesn't count Lightbearers as truly alive humans.)
Behavior-wise, though, have you noticed how obsessed he is with jade? The coins, the necklace. Jade is a very precious stone in the Sinosphere, and jade jewelry is for giving luck or protection to the wielder- what you will hear less commonly is that it is meant to work by breaking instead of you when something happens. We give them to kids and elderly for this reason.
(You can wonder, for a second, the jade coins he always plays with before Gambit rounds, wraps around certain weapons for you, and the Red String of Fate ornament for Malfeasance. Is this a man perpetually deeply terrified for everyone or himself, or is he every middle aging ah-yi who just got back into religion while you were in school?)
So he's Vietnamese and the Chinese influence means his pre-rez life had to have been after Chinese imperial interference with Vietnam. Unfortunately, four different historical periods between 111 BC and the 1400s isn't good carbon dating. KE SHI NI HUI KANDAO THE SANDWICH,
banh mi is a baguette sandwich. this kind of bread comes to vietnam in the mid-19th century from French colonizers, and only during WWI did a mixed flour version make this bread accessible outside luxury. Early 1900s le. But "post-1900s" isn't a better narrowing down than "BCs to 1400s" in a future setting like Destiny.
Except that Drifter's banh mi recipe specifically uses pâté. This was only a common banh mi filling before the 1950s, when the partition of Vietnam sent an influx of northerners to Saigon and led to the Saigon sandwich that is modern banh mi. So, 1910s to 1950s. And the fact that he defaults to hanfu rather than Western dress or more modern standard Vietnamese ethnic clothing like ao dai skews him having been an adult on the earlier end of this time frame or living in a more rural area where colonization ideas were not as enforced. (One could explore him having other Vietnamese forms of cultural expression like lacquered teeth, actually.)
Ain't that something? He could have lived through WWI or even saw the beginning of the Communist revolution. The possibility that his first life was a survivor of colonization, war draft, and/or violent civil war could add a lot to readings of his character, especially his C-PTSD, but that's a whole other post if the people demand it. It's a neat thing to explore, huh?
And don't call him a rat le! Bad enough already the game think that is cute! White people calling East Asians rats is generally a slur in reference (from my collection) to immigrant "infestation" and part of general stereotypes about their uncleanliness (they cook with gutter oil, they eat rats, they cheap they scam they lie dadadada). You want source bigger than I grow up with white people shout in my face and their children pull their eyes to squint like a "jap"? Look up WWI propaganda posters about Japan. They did not invent that out of nowhere, they make Japanese people into rats because that's something they already say.
"It's just about Japanese-" what if I told you a large part of Western racism about Asians is that they can't tell the difference and don't care. and they're making fun of similar cultures and features.
"My Asian friend said it was okay-" the asian friend values your friendship and your comfort more than what they feel when you say slurs, dude. sorry i had to be the one to tell you that. one friend (or stranger online) giving you the pass to say it in front of them doesn't mean you're allowed to say it to everyone.
"it's fictional-" Real East Asian people getting beat down by Sinophobia matters a little more than how cute you think it is to call a Vietnamese man an animal that your culture associates with filth and plague.
"Chinese zodiac animal-" The snake is right there. The game won't shut up about how snake he is. We're having a Drifter-heavy episode right in the beginning of the snake lunar year. His personality matches the charm, mystery, and wisdom associated with the sign. He is never thematically associated with rats. He is never respectfully associated with rats.
It would be one thing if it was another asian character calling him that in the context of the rat's folkloric characteristics, but this is an American game by an American studio writing someone voiced by a non-asian to call him a rat as an insult about his cleanliness and food choices. Good for you if that doesn't hurt your feelings! Hurt many more people than you! They more real than him!
Good game story. Mistakes happen! Doesn't mean you have special privilege to repeat it.
He is snake! Viper! Asp! Cost zero dollar to say that instead! Don't keep a pet slur in your pocket!

I told appa that I was thinking about my Asian Les Misérables AU, and he told me, "Remember, it shouldn’t be one loaf of bread Jean Valjean steals, but one grain of rice."
ONE GRAIN???

If you're wondering why it's a lobster claw holding a grain, it's because I realise now I don't know how to draw human hands lmao

A list of my personal head canons from the Modern AU E/R les mis fanfiction I am writing that no one asked for but I'm hoping will persuade you to read it once I publish it
Courfeyrac started following Enjolras around in seventh grade and that is the only reason they became friends in the first place
Grantaire once bullied Enjolras for the lack of eye contact he makes and now Enjolras stares uncomfortably into peoples eyes when he wants them to know he is listening
Touch starved/touch avoidant Enjolras
Marius is actually fucking stupid but still we love and treasure him
Ferre had to sit everyone down and explain they weren't allowed to touch Enjolras, and then everyone got jealous that they didn't have their own things and accidentally they created a rule system
Nonbinary Jehan obviously
Enjolras is a lightweight
Asian Eponine
Courfeyrac is doing it with Ferre AND Jehan AND Marius bc u can't force me to choose
Autistic Enjolras
Joly has OCD that is based directly off of my OCD
Combeferre speaks in riddles
Courfeyrac's favourite band is ABBA
LITERALLY everyone is aware that E and R are in love except for them
Courfeyrac has been actively trying to get them together for two years
JOLY AND R BEST FRIEND SUPREMACY
I know this is irrelevant to the majority of people but I spent literally a year of my life in psychosis and somehow this is all I have to show for it so let me know if u would read my fanfiction HAHAHAHAHA i went crazy

A few thoughts about the new 2023/24 London cast:
Delighted I’ll get to see Jon some more although I think it was a given he was staying anyways since he’s been in the role a matter of months, I really thoroughly enjoyed him when I saw him last time!
Gutted to see Holly go as she’s been a part of the show for nearly 4 years now.
I am super excited to see Lily Kerhoas taken on Christine as she can absolutely SING I’ve not heard her full soprano voice yet except snippets here and there, of course she was cosette in the Les Mis concert like 3/4 years ago now so she has undoubtedly improved but very excited to see her!
Joe Griffiths Brown as Raoul absolutely over the moon to see the first PRINCIPAL black Raoul I want to say in any flagship production??? (Please correct me if I am wrong) he’s only 23 too so super young! Looking forward to seeing him!
Paige, Kelly, Adam, Matt & Francesca I’m very happy are staying all very strong leads!
David Kristopher Brown as Piangi is really cool as 15 years ago he covered the role so to see him back is lovely! And a fellow Scottish so extra points!
And our first ever principal asian Meg! - Maiya Hikasa very excited to see a new Meg! And what colour her wigs going to be specifically considering how they done Ellie Young’s natural colour for her Meg wig
The rest of the cast looks amazing ! Melanie Gowie is back in the show so more gorgeous photos incoming! This time she’s back as wardrobe mistress/2nd cover Mme giry so happy for her!
Victoria Ward is back in the show she was in the last original production cast??? as cover Mme Giry which I think she’s back doing again.
Eve Shanu Wilson is now 1st cover Christine which I’m ecstatic about I’m sure I’ll get to see her again cause wow she’s such a good Christine!
Michael Colbourne is 1st cover Raoul and 2nd cover Phantom he was last in Wicked as cover Fiyero!
Connor Ewing is finally joining the cast after emergency covering so much! He’s now getting to cover the phantom too!!
Grace Hume is now 1st cover Meg and Serina Faull is now 2nd cover!
Also Lily De la Haye is now a swing! Very very exciting for her
Overall quite a large cast change this year I am so sad to see lots of the cast from the last 2 years go but super excited to see fresh faces!
