Comment: An important (if retrospective) overview of 'queer' presence' in an era of regression in the US and elsewhere.
Extract 1: A record 87 out LGBTQI athletes, including eight team captains, will be competing in the upcoming FIFA Women’s World Cup to be held in Australia and New Zealand this July.
There are 736 women’s players in this year’s World Cup. This means that more than 1 in 10 of the female soccer players competing this year identify as gay, bisexual, queer or non-binary.
This number is more than double the 38 players who were out at the last Women’s World Cup, in 2019.
According to the LGBTQI sports site, OutSports, while the number of teams in the tournament has grown by a third (from 24 to 32) over the past four years, the number of out athletes has more than doubled, which “reflects the growth of acceptance”.
Most of the publicly out athletes come from Europe, the Americas and the two host nations, Australia, and New Zealand, which have more favourable laws for LGBTQI people in comparison to places like the Middle East, Africa, and Asia.
Extract 2: FIFA has faced criticism in the past for allowing countries with hostile LGBTQ laws to serve as hosts for the tournaments.
Last year, Qatar hosted the Men’s World Cup and threatened sanctions on national teams for wanting to wear rainbow armbands to show support for LGBTQ+ pride. In Qatar, homosexuality is illegal and punishable by up to three years in prison.
Teams participating in the Women’s World Cup tournament will not be permitted to wear the OneLove and rainbow-coloured bands. Instead, eight FIFA-approved armbands with messages including: Unite for Inclusion, Unite for Indigenous Peoples, Unite for Gender Equality, Unite for Peace, Unite for Education for All, Unite for Zero Hunger, Unite for Ending Violence Against Women, and Football is Joy, Peace, Love, Hope, and Passion will be offered as alternatives.
Earlier this month Australian captain Sam Kerr made the tough call to not wear the rainbow captain’s armband during the upcoming Women’s World Cup, to avoid “putting everything at risk”.
“For me it’s not worth the risk; putting the team at risk; putting everything at risk; and there will be multiple opportunities where I get to use my voice for things,” Kerr said.

Group E Breakdown
Expected to move on: USA, Netherlands
Expected to exit in group stage: Portugal, Vietnam
United States
See this Post! https://www.tumblr.com/andiessoccerblog/721584664034361344/uswnt-roster-drop-june-30-2023?source=share
Netherlands
FIFA Ranking: 8
Reputation:
The Netherlands won the 2018 Euros and reached the final of the 2019 World Cup, but in 2022 they dropped from 4th place to 8th place in the FIFA world rankings. This is a result of a team who has a solid base, but suffers if its stars are not available. Some of their strongest players aren’t playing at their best any more, and their extremely capable goalie from 2019, Sari Van Veenendaal, has retired, leaving huge shoes to fill. Additionally, the coach that led them to the 2019 World Cup final has since taken a job at England, leaving the team in the hands of less-experienced and very recent addition, Andries Jonker. Their most important game in the group will be the repeat of the 2019 final, Netherlands v. USA, where the Dutch walked away with silver.
Player Pool:
Netherlands’ stars from the 2019 World Cup are in the team’s midfield: Lieke Martens and Danielle Van de Donk. I would normally include Vivianne Miedema, but she was ruled out of the tournament with an ACL injury. The team will need to rely on veterans Sherida Spitse (captain), Shanice van de Sanden, and Jill Roord to pull them past the group stage.
2019 WWC Performance:
The Netherlands skyrocketed into the final this year, winning their group and finding results in every game in the elimination round, except for the USA. Their game against Sweden went to extra time, but they showed the grit and talent to make it to the final. They had an impressive number of goalscorers, with the top being Vivianne Miedema, and the goalie Sari Van Veenendaal won the tournament’s Golden Glove award, and is my Netherlands MVP.
Portugal
FIFA Ranking: 21
Reputation:
It will surprise most people that Portugal is also a World Cup debutante–they are the highest FIFA-ranked debutante team– their inclusion this year is due to one of the extra European confederation spots in the expanded field. Despite never having qualified, Portugal has been a staple in the women’s game for years as they host the Algarve Cup, a yearly international invitational tournament that is considered a “Mini World Cup” that has run since 1994– making it the second longest running women's soccer tournament, other than the World Cup itself. Portugal will likely beat fellow debutante Vietnam in their group, but will likely not find results in games against the USA and the Netherlands, the gold- and silver-medalists of the 2019 World Cup.
Player Pool:
Portugal has several veteran players with over 100 caps, but there isn’t a front-runner that has scored massive amounts of goals for the country. FIFA pinpoints Dolores Silva as the player to watch, a dynamic midfield veteran that scored a couple goals in their path to qualify for 2023.
2019 WWC performance:
Did not qualify
Vietnam
FIFA Ranking: 33
Reputation:
After narrowly missing out on both the 2015 and 2019 World Cup, Vietnam finally qualified for 2023, and followed up their qualification by winning the 2023 Southeast Asia Playoffs, in which fellow debutante the Philippines didn’t make it out of their group. To help the growth of women's soccer in their country, there is a semi-professional league that almost all of the players are in. An interesting twist in their qualification is that some of their games were against Asian teams that were still suffering substantial player unavailability due to covid–but Vietnam’s luck ran out when the country got placed in this group with the USA and the Netherlands.
Player Pool:
Since almost all of the team plays domestically, there isn’t a lot known about the team. Captain Huỳnh Như and midfielder Nguyễn Thị Tuyết Dung are the leading scorers.
2019 WWC performance:
Did not qualify

Al Ain: 2024 AFC Champions League Winners
Al Ain: Doubles from Soufiane Rahimi and Kodjo Laba drove United Arab Emirates’ Al Ain FC to win the AFC Champions League™ 2023/24 title following a 5-1 victory over Japan’s Yokohama F. Marinos in the second leg of the final at Hazza bin Zayed Stadium on Saturday. The J1 League side had won the first leg 2-1 in Yokohama, but a scintillating second-half performance from Al Ain meant the inaugural winners of the AFC Champions League in 2002-03 become also the last team to win it under the current format before the launch of the AFC Champions League Elite next year. Following their continental triumph, Al Ain become Asia’s fourth representatives at the FIFA Club World Cup 2025, joining Saudi Arabia’s Al Hilal SFC, Japan’s Urawa Red Diamonds and Korea Republic’s Ulsan HD at the US tournament next year.
Already holding a one-goal advantage from the home tie two weeks earlier, the Japanese side came racing out of the blocks trying to add another that could ease the task in front of a packed Hazza bin Zayed Stadium. Anderson Lopes tested goalkeeper Khaled Eisa within two minutes, but his shot from a tight angle was saved by the UAE international.
With seven knockout stage goals to his name already, the Moroccan showed his quality once again, picking the ball up on the left flank, cutting inside and feinting a shot but instead intelligently finding Yahia Nader who produced a moment of genius, sending a backheel pass that left goalkeeper William Popp in no man’s land and allowing Rahimi to slot home into the empty net for the opener.
Rahimi’s pace continued to be a nuisance for the Marinos defence; the Moroccan was too quick for Shinnosuke Hatanaka, beating the Japanese centre-back to the ball and forcing him to commit a foul inside the box, which translated into a penalty kick following a VAR check. Paraguayan playmaker Alejandro Romero (Kaku) stepped up and slotted home his side’s second. Al Ain continued to rely on counter attacks and could have been 3-0 on the night seven minutes before the break when Rahimi pushed forward down the wing, beating his markers, but with just the goalkeeper to beat from a narrow angle, the winger’s left-footed finish hit the side netting instead.
The visitors equalised the aggregate score in the 40th minute, as Yan Matheus capitalised on a mistake from Kouame Kouadio to snatch the ball, cut into his left foot and aimed for the bottom far corner where Eisa’s fingertips were unable to stop it nestling into the back of the net to make it 2-1 on the night.
There was still room for more drama before the break as Marinos were reduced to 10 men following a red card to goalkeeper Popp. Once more it was Rahimi causing trouble; he broke free down the middle at full speed, rounding the goalkeeper who made contact to bring him just outside the penalty box, receiving his marching orders in the process.
Al Ain piled up the pressure after the restart, with head coach Hernan Crespo introducing striker Laba for full-back Saeed Jumaa. The hosts were rewarded for their attacking endeavors with a third goal midway through the second half, and once more it was Rahimi delivering the goods, while it was Laba who was the focal point of the attack, starting the move which saw defender Eduardo clear the ball, but only as far as Rahimi who controlled it expertly, moving it to his left foot and hammering home for Al Ain’s third.
It was the 27-year-old’s 13th goal of the campaign, matching the record for most goals in a single AFC Champions League season, shared by Guangzhou FC’s Muriqui (2013), FC Seoul’s Adriano (2016) and Al Sadd’s Baghdad Bounedjah (2018). With 10 minutes of added time given, substitute Laba cemented the win with a fourth goal. Goalkeeper Fuma Shirasaka, who himself had come in the place of Elber following the dismissal of Popp in the first half, committed a horror mistake, missing his attempt to clear Rahimi’s through pass, allowing the Togolese forward to finish comfortably into the empty net for his seventh goal of the campaign, having last scored in the round of 16.
Deep into added time, Laba added his second of the night and his team’s fifth. The 32-year-old fed Kaku down the left and the Paraguayan sent a low effort that looked set for a comfortable Shirasaka save, but the slightest of touches from Laba changed the direction of the ball into the back of the net to seal a 6-3 aggregate victory for the Emiratis. The emphatic triumph made up for Al Ain’s final defeats to Al Ittihad in 2005 and to Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors in 2016.

How did the 41 workers trapped inside a collapsed Himalayan highway tunnel survive for almost two weeks?
Between 50 and 60 tunnellers were on the overnight shift when a landslide hit the area early on November 12, according to officials at the time.
The tunnel they were building collapsed about 200 meters from the entrance.
Workers near the opening managed to make it out.
Most of the crew were trapped inside a 2km stretch of the tunnel, which is 13m wide and 15m high.
Australian Arnold Dix, a professor of engineering and the president of the International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association, is helping to lead the rescue efforts.
"Thousands of tonnes of rock have fallen in part of the tunnel and essentially created a tomb," Professor Dix said.
Fortunately, they have been able to receive essentials to help them survive while they wait for rescue crews to reach them.

Before Arnold Dix saved dozens from an underground tomb, he was a hero during Qatar's 'World Cup of Shame'
Before Arnold Dix was hailed a hero for helping rescue 41 men trapped underground in India, he was already a "silent hero" to thousands of migrant workers forced to live in appalling conditions in Qatar.
ABC TV program Australian Story can reveal the international tunnelling expert from Victoria ran a secret, self-funded humanitarian program in the oil-rich emirate in the lead-up to it hosting football's 2022 World Cup, when ill-treatment of workers from Africa and Asia was rife.
Amnesty International dubbed it the "World Cup of shame".
Dix, a barrister, scientist and professor in engineering, organised aid in Qatar and did it secretly out of fear of reprisals from "a multi-billion-dollar human-trafficking system".

ICC To Make Stop Clock Rule Permanent In ODIs And T20Is: Report
The International Cricket Council: The International Cricket Council (ICC) is set to implement the stop clock rule permanently, following a successful trial period, making it a standard feature in international cricket, says a report. According to Cricbuzz, the rule which was initially introduced on an experimental basis in December 2023, has now been approved for implementation in all white-ball cricket, including Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) and One-Day Internationals (ODIs), starting with the upcoming T20 World Cup in June. The stop clock rule aims to ensure the timely completion of matches by requiring the fielding team to commence the next over within 60 seconds of the previous one ending. An electronic clock will be displayed between overs, with umpires responsible for enforcing the rule. Fielding teams will receive two warnings before facing a five-run penalty for subsequent violations. During the trial period, the ICC and its cricket committee evaluated the effectiveness of the rule and found merit in its permanent adoption. The decision to make the rule universal for all ICC white-ball games underscores the commitment to maintaining the pace and excitement of limited-overs cricket. The approval of the stop clock rule came during the ongoing series of meetings of the ICC in Dubai, setting the stage for its implementation in future tournaments. However, discussions regarding the Champions Trophy were notably absent from the agenda. With Pakistan designated as the host nation, speculation surrounds India's potential refusal to tour the country, reminiscent of last year's Asia Cup format alteration. Read the full article

The Global Gaming Industry is Actively Promoting Regional Expansion
March 5th, 2024
The gaming industry has embraced new development opportunities. According to a survey of internet audiences in 2023, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Brazil, and the United Arab Emirates all have video game user penetration rates above 90% among respondents. This indicates huge potential consumer markets in Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America.
The Brazilian games industry experienced a steady growth of 3.2% in the number of studios between 2021 and 2023, gradually increasing from 1,009 to 1,042. The increase of game development studios in these regions has given a constant boost to the gaming industry's growth. The African market lacks such a direct driving force. It needs to attract game developers and investors to explore the untapped African market. In a recent interview with the co-founders of Africa Games Week, they expressed their concerns about the potential stagnation of the South African game market in the future, which motivated them to organize this event. African Games Week is held to offer financing options, discussion, and hands-on experience for local game developers.
Saudi Arabia has been more proactive. Gaming plays a crucial role in the crown prince's transformation plan known as Vision 2030, which is designed to diversify the economy and reduce dependence on oil exports through billions of dollars in investments. This year, Riyadh will also host the annual Esports World Cup from 2024. The crown prince stated that this would provide an unparalleled esports experience and break boundaries within the industry.
As a leading gaming company, Tencent is now shifting its focus towards these regions. TiMi Studios, Tencent's gaming studio, announced that the multiplayer online battle arena game Honor of Kings will be launched in the MENA region, Eastern Europe, and South Asia on February 21. The game was first released outside of China in Brazil last year.
According to eMarketer's data, Latin America, the Middle East, and Africa house approximately 21% of global game users, and this figure is expected to surge in the coming years.
eMarketer, Worldwide Digital Games Forecast 2023.
Companies and game developers alike possess the opportunity to engage a vast user base, leveraging regional factors to create innovative and uniquely positioned games that offer lucrative profits.

The Spaniard has bemoaned the lack of time since their quarterfinal victory against Uzbekistan on Saturday, in which the Maroons survived a scare after extra time and penalties.
“If we speak about preparation for the game, it was a very short time,” he said. “We had only two days to prepare.
“The game will be the toughest match of the tournament for us.”
Qatar were unbeaten in the victorious 2019 campaign and are yet to taste defeat in this edition. Indeed, the draw after extra time with Uzbekistan was the first time they failed to win a match in the 2023 tournament.
Tarek Salman returned to the defence for Qatar in the quarterfinals, having been named among the substitutes in the 2-1 round of 16 victory against Palestine.
The defender echoed the thoughts of his manager that the recovery time is a concern and that those who played in the Uzbekistan win are feeling fatigued. But he hopes the occasion can carry the team.
“Everyone is excited; against Iran it will be physical,” Salman said.
“They have stars who play in big leagues in Europe so we’re motivated 200 percent.
“We hope to bring joy to our fans.”

Iran midfielder Saeid Ezatolahi, meanwhile, has raised doubts about the AFC appointing an Arab referee for their Asian Cup semifinal clash against the hosts and defending champions
Wednesday’s semifinal will be officiated by Kuwait’s Ahmad Al-Ali, who has taken charge of two group games and a last-16 tie at the tournament.
“What is a little bit surprising for us is that the referee for the match is from Kuwait, he’s an Arab,” Ezatolahi told reporters on Tuesday.
“We’re just wondering how it’s possible that they put an Arab as a referee for the match.
“But we are the Iran national team, we are a very big team. We have very good players, we are professional.”
Iran reached the semifinals after they beat Asia’s top-ranked side Japan 2-1 despite themselves having only two days to recover after their last-16 tie against Syria went to extra time and penalties.
Ezatolahi, like Lopez and Tarek, has criticised the lack of recovery time in the knockout stage.
“In this tournament, the players didn’t have enough time to recover, specifically in the knockout stage,” he said.
“Many of the players came straight from their clubs and are under a lot of pressure here.”

Iran coach Amir Ghalenoei reiterated the rest period being “less than 72 hours” before they faced Japan while he also took a shot at the video assistant referee (VAR).
“In this tournament at least, I can say that VAR was not very kind to us. We had a situation in the match against Japan that could have been a penalty on Sardar Azmoun, but VAR did not check it for us,” he said.
“But we have to be stronger than everything that is happening at this tournament.”
Iran beat Qatar 4-0 in October, but Ghalenoei urged his team to forget about previous results as they seek a place in their first final since they won their third title in 1976.
“When Qatar reached the semifinals, they showed their quality, so we need to forget our result against Qatar and forget our performance against Japan. That belongs to history now,” he said.
“We need to show more quality and we have to cover more distance compared with the match against Japan. I hope we can reach the final after nearly 50 years. I have big belief in our players.”
Jordan have lost once at the tournament already when they went down to Bahrain in the group stage match. However, they do have three wins to South Korea’s two. The last two wins were inside 90 minutes, where the Koreans required extra time in their two knock-out games so far.
