Summary: Ash makes you feel less alone when your friends are less than stellar

You should’ve known. Your whole life, you’d been the one left out of parties, or plans, or group trips, hell even group chats. You were just never included. 

And you’d learned to cope - got used to being alone. And eventually, it stopped hurting so much. You were comfortable in your own presence and spending time with yourself, and then, you didn’t have to be. Because you had Ashton. 

Ashton was the one person in your life who made you feel included in every possible aspect. He asked for your opinion on everything from his shoes to new music he was working on. And he never made a decision without your input, even if it was just what you were having for dinner or what movie to watch. 

But you still had other friends. A whole group of them, actually. Rosie, Liam, and Ollie. The four of you did just about everything together, and for the first time, you felt truly included in a group. 

You went out to eat at least twice a week, constantly messaged in the group chat, and even had plans to take a trip in a few weeks. It was new territory, for sure, but you were having so much fun navigating it that you didn’t mind. 

Until, of course, the inevitable happened. 

It wasn’t that big of a deal, really. At least that’s what you’d been telling yourself. All they did was go out to eat without you. At your favorite restaurant. In the middle of the worst week of your life - which they were all well aware of. 

It has to be me. Otherwise it wouldn’t keep happening.

You stared at your phone, the picture of the three of them smiling back at you doing nothing to cheer you up. Ashton was still at the studio, he’d called you earlier to let you know that he’d be home a little later that night, so you were left to deal with this entirely on your own. 

You texted the group chat, doing your best to pretend you had no idea where they were. 

Hey, guys! I’ve got a bit of free time, anyone wanna come over for a little while???

Rosie: Sorry, hun! I’m all tangled up at the office right now, big project coming up

Liam: Yeah, I’m currently on a hike with a few friends, and we’re not gonna be back anytime soon

Ollie: I’d love to if I wasn’t walking into the gym as we speak. Sry luv :( 

So now they weren’t just excluding you, they were lying straight to your face about it. You felt a tear roll down your cheek and you immediately wiped it away, doing your best to pretend like this had absolutely no effect on you. 

But soon enough, you couldn’t hold them in. They fell and fell and fell until you heard the door open. 

“I’m home, sweets! Thought we could try that new Thai restaurant for dinner if your up for-” 

He cut himself off at the sight of your tears. 

“Hey, honey, what’s going on?” He asked, sitting down next to you. You wrapped yourself around him, burying your face into his chest as you cried. 

“I don’t know why it happens every time, Ash, but it does. It has to be me. I have to be the one pushing them away or something.” You complained. 

Ashton was confused until he caught sight of your phone lying face up on the couch next to him. He took in what he was seeing and immediately understood. 

“Oh, dove, it’s not you. You just happen to find the shittiest people on the planet.” He said, attempting to comfort you. It helped to some measure because he felt more than heard you let out a giggle. 

“They’re not shitty people.” You commented. 

“Yeah, well, either way, fuck them. It’ll just be you and I tonight, alright?” You nodded against his chest, pulling back to look up at him. 

You smiled, pressing a kiss to his lips. “Thank you.” You mumbled. 

“Anything for you.”

A few minutes later, Ash was ordering takeout while you were debating what movie to watch. 

“Babe, do you want to watch Coraline or Pride and Prejudice?” You asked when he walked back into the room. 

“Oh, Coraline, for sure.” He responded. 

You laughed, clicking on the movie but pausing it before it started. 

“Food should be here in about 20 minutes.”

“Perfect.” You grabbed his hand, dragging him upstairs and into the master bathroom. 

He watched as you dug through one of your drawers, eventually pulling out two face masks. 

“Yes.” He said before you could get a word out. “100% yes.”

You smiled, placing one package down on the counter before opening the other one, gingerly applying it to Ashton’s face.

“Well don’t you look so handsome?” You playfully teased, smoothing out a wrinkle with your finger. 

“I should hope so.” He said, admiring himself in the mirror. You hopped up onto the counter, watching as he opened the second one and put it on your face this time. 

“How long do we leave these on for?” He asked you, picking up the empty package. 

“Um, probably about 15 minutes.” You responded. He nodded, and the two of you made your way back downstairs. 

15 minutes later, the masks were taken off, just a few moments before the doorbell rang to signify the arrival of your dinner. 

You made yourself comfortable on the couch as Ashton got the food, admiring him as he walked into the living room. 

“Are you looking at me like that because I have food?” He playfully asked you.

You shook your head. 

“I’m looking at you like that because I love you and I appreciate everything you’re doing for me.”

His face flushed, and he smiled as he set down the food. He walked around the coffee table, crouching down in front of where you were sitting on the couch. 

“I’d do this for you even if you weren’t having a tough week. I’d do whatever you asked of me whenever you asked me to. I love you so much, sweets, and all I want in this world is to make you as happy as I possibly can.”

You were crying for the second time that night, but (thankfully) for a much different reason. You leaned forward, connecting your lips once again, trying to convey as much love as you could through the kiss. 

When you pulled away, Ashton pressed a quick kiss to your nose.

“Now, how about we eat some food and watch a movie and pretend like none of that bad stuff ever happened?”

the phone rang loudly, breaking the silence in the ghostly apartment. the home was never the same when ashton wasn’t around, which hurt, because now more than ever was he rarely around.

“hello?” the broken voice spoke, loud background noises almost drowning him out. “babe are you there?”

“hi ash.” you spoke softly, your heart hurt. speaking to him felt different than it used to, there was no more ‘lighting up’ when he’d call you, only frustration. you knew you wouldn’t talk to him again for weeks afterwards. “how are things?”

“busy, as always.” he chuckled, “are-” he broke off, the line beyond broken. “and i wasn’t-” he went silent afterwards, expecting your reply.

though your silence spoke volumes, he knew how you felt and what was coming, he just didn’t know how to deal with it.

you sighed “i miss you.” you broke, the waterworks beginning to flow. every night you spent away from him drove you crazy.

“i miss you too, baby.” ashton’s words meant nothing to you, honestly, if he really did miss you he’d do something about it - yet he never did.

he never would. his work came first, always. it was something that, although you admired, constantly killed you. you’d never be more important than what ash dedicated his life to.

“i love you” your statement went unheard, the like going dead. every time you’d speak such would happen, you two would never have a proper conversation.

it hurt more than anything to know how far away your boy was. it hurt too much.

You didn’t feel like a priority with Ashton anymore. You aren’t sure when it really started but one day things changed and you’ve noticed each one. He was spending more time with his friends, he didn’t text you ‘good morning’ or ‘goodnight’ anymore. You pinpoint each change, his looks not lingering on you anymore.

You were going crazy.

You questioned every little thing you’ve done wondering if you did something wrong, said something that turned him away. You’ve been together for almost a year and it all seemed to be going well.

Was there someone else?

His mother keeps texting you asking if you’re coming to Australia for Christmas. Lauren and Harry reach out too but you don’t know how to respond. Ashton hasn’t asked you or discussed the holidays with you at all.

Does he just assume you’re going?

When you’re together you try to talk to him but he doesn’t seem as engaged as before. His kisses are less frequent.

It’s a few days before Christmas and there’s still no clarification from Ashton on plans so you decide to go home for the holidays. You’re drinking hot cocoa with your fuzzy boots on and the small pile of presents you bought for him are mocking you from under your tree.

Somehow, you find the courage to gather the presents and drive over to his place. You knock on the door politely. You ring the doorbell. No answer.

You fish out the spare key he gave you from the very bottom of your purse and let yourself in. His house is silent and dark except for his small tree on the coffee table. Did he leave for Australia already?

“Thanks for the goodbye,” you mutter setting his presents by his little tree and rush out of there.

Your chest is shaking from anger and sadness and some other emotion you can’t quite place. You try to hold onto the anger so your sad tears don’t spill over because this is how he ended things. Ghosting you and abandoning you and making you feel crazy.

You try calling him but if he’s already on a plane his phone is probably off so you leave a message just as you pull up to your home.

“Ashton Fletcher Irwin, how dare you?” you seethe and climb out of your car. “How dare you end things between us like this? You don’t have enough respect for me to break up with me in person so you just fly off to the other side of the world? And before Christmas? I’m so angry and mad…”

You grumble and curse all the way to your door. You’re still shaking from anger and sadness as you struggle to open your door. Your fingers are shaking as well.

“You’re going to regret this, I can’t believe you. I have half a mind to fly to Australia and–”

You stop dead in your tracks because your whole apartment is filled with your favorite flowers and twinkly lights are strung everywhere. They’re across the ceiling, hanging down your walls and Ashton is standing there with a bashful grin.

“Hi angel.”

“What–”

“I know I’ve been distant lately but I’ve been scrambling on how to do this perfectly but everywhere I tried is booked up or it didn’t feel right. I’ve been nervous as hell because I want this to be special, because you’re special. You’re so amazing–” he pulls you into the living room and you drop your phone onto the floor staring at him in shock.

This can’t be happening, can it? Are you dreaming? Is this real?

“And I was nervous while I waited for you but now you’re here and I can…I can breathe,” he gets down on one knee the same time he exhales.

“Oh my God,” you gasp.

“You’ve made my life brighter and I wanted to show you how much with these lights but it doesn’t compare to the way your eyes shine or how bright your smile is. y/n,” he pulls out a round wooden box from his pocket and pops it open. “Will you marry me?”

You exhale the breath you’d been holding, tears finally rolling from your eyes.

“Yes, yes I will,” you drop to your knees to give him a kiss.

Through giggles, tears, and fumbling fingers, he slips the diamond on the proper finger. You twiddle it in the lights and it shimmers like a twinkling star.

“It’s beautiful, Ash.”

“I designed it myself.”

“This is why you were acting so strange?”

“Yeah, I couldn’t figure out how to do it properly.”

“I thought you were breaking up with me.”

“What? Oh–no, I’m sorry angel. You’re stuck with me forever now,” he smiles then kisses you sweetly.

“Can you do me a favor?” you ask a few moments later as you lay on top of him on your floor.

“What’s that?” he slips his hand under your shirt.

“Can you delete the voicemail I just left and don’t listen to it?”

ONE HUNDRED AND THIRTY FIVE UNREAD TEXT MESSAGES FROM: A.Irwin

the musty glass of water sat on her bedside table, as it had done for the past three days. the unbearable sadness that she’d felt before ashton had returned to her body, her bones aching with every movement, her body heavy.

she didn’t know why she felt such a way, she broke up with him. she’d understand the depression if it was the other-way around, but she had no reason to break over her own decision, right?

basking in the misery of things that only you could’ve done to yourself is the worst form of torture anyone could ever put themselves through.

INCOMING CALL: cliffocondaᯓᡣ𐭩

she let it ring, staring at the phone as she hesitated on her next action, her teeth sinking into her lip.

she couldn’t ignore her best friend, not now, not ever. honestly, she needed him. everything hurt and not even she could fathom why, michael could fix that. michael always fixed that.

“hello?” his soft voice spoke, waiting patiently for an answer he never got, something he was used to. he’d always known how awful y/n was at phone calls. “you there?” silence once again was all he was met with “bunny, i need you to talk to me. when did you last hear from ash?”

her heart jumped to her throat at the mention of the name, of course michael didn’t call to ask if she was okay - ashton was a better friend to him. ashton was more hurt. “why? is he okay?”

“i don’t know. it’s- that’s why i called you, last i heard you guys were fine, now ash is missing. only context clue here is that yesterday he told luke he wanted to make things up with you, whatever that means?”

“fuck me.” she sighed, dragging her hands across her face, eyes nervously darting to the apartment door as a knock was heard “mike, look, i’ll call you back. i think i’ve found ash.”

the door knocked again, slightly more aggressively this time. she frowned, dragging herself up. “one second!” she yelled out, brushing her hair out with her fingers, makeup still lingering on her face from that morning.

the girl shakily moved over toward the door, opening it only to confirm her fears, yet also the sight was comforting.

three days after their breakup, ashton irwin stood at her door, clad in clothes that made him far too appealing to her, a single white rose gripped in his hand.

his expression was enough to kill her ten times over, the first time they’d seen eachother in six weeks and three days, and this is how it had to be. “i don’t want us to be over.” he spoke shakily, scanning her face for a reaction.

“don’t do this, ashton. we won’t work.” y/n teared, going to close the door, only for ash’s foot to stop her from doing so.

he shook his head “i don’t believe that.” he stated firmly. “i don’t believe that we won’t work, for four fucking years we’ve worked, i’m not going to throw all of that away because you think i care about my job more than you. nothing is more important than you, ever.”

she remained quiet, knowing ashton’s words were honest, though she believed he deserved more than what she could offer.

“i would give it all up for you in a heartbeat, baby. everything. never in my life has anything made more sense to me than this. than us. than you.” he took a deep breath, sinking down to his knee. “you’ve been the best part of me for forever, you make me who i am, for that i am so grateful. i don’t want to lose you over your own overthinking, n/n - marry me? let me never let you doubt my love again.”
