I’ve enjoyed doing a lot of plein air landscape painting in the #asheville area. The setting for this piece is a small stream in the Asheville botanical gardens, where I went with the model for the painting to shoot reference photos. MAJOR FAIL, Omni Grove Park Inn. When I visit #Asheville I expect #AshevilleMade products. ESPECIALLY pottery. I know that Omni is not based in the US, so let me explain. #Asheville is home to the BEST ceramics in the US. Nothing against the pottery made in the rest of the nation (one of my favorite artists is actually located in the Ozarks and another is here in North Alabama).... A new, weird experiment. I’ve been making weird photo collages on my phone for a while now, combining random candid photos with images of textures and colors that I find striking via double exposures. Fun to cut loose and explore some new ideas technically and conceptually. This is an image of me with a neck pillow worn atop my head like a weird bonnet, along with a textural photo montaged on top. I like it because it’s a strange composition that for me is all about color and textural juxtapositions. I’m enjoying messing with texture, using brushes, palette knife and an old plastic gift card for paint application. It feels fun, loose, and something genuinely different for me. Laid out the design for a new one on the panel today, a #bacchanal with, fittingly, Bacchus or Dionysus, the god of wine, and a host of his revelers. Yeap this’ll be a fun one to paint. I like this stage as a small drawing suddenly becomes fixed on a panel and the birth of a painting has begun.
