First 2 hours with Venture

So i decided at the beginning of this season that I would learn Venture in competitive because I am a monster of a person and I don't have much to lose that I can't gain back.

Venture is pretty sweet when the comp and the map supports them. I have noticed a few things initially about their playstyle and where i get the most value and where I get punished the most.

Pros: They get a lot of value in KOTH maps and maps that have tighter areas/chokes (King's Row, Havana 2nd, Shambali 2nd, BlizzardWorld, Circuit Royal 3rd to name a couple)

Extremely high burst potential!

Incredible mobility that can put you into some really good positions.

Ability usage also grants overhealth which can be great to give your supports enough reaction time to what you're doing.

Let's be honest... they have one of the most joyful mannerisms for a character in the game of overwatch (I literally smile when I am playing them because of all the random voice lines)

Can be a good tank buster at times but I feel like playing them like an assassin is a better use of their kit.

Cons: Very limited range which does not work as easily on certain maps with certain comps against certain comps. Anything with long sightlines with a more passive turtle type team will have you either feeding or waiting to engage with long bouts of downtime. (Havana 1st and 3rd, Circuit Royal 1st sort of, Dorado 2nd I felt some of the pain points on)

You can be put into some very punishing positions if your team doesn't follow up on your aggression. This goes without saying that mismanagement of their abilities will also punish you depending on what you are doing.

You can be countered pretty easily by Pharah and Echo. Long range DPS heroes can also be a problem if you can't close the gap or have someone else helping you with them. Securing a kill on a good Mercy is challenging and requires the use of most of your abilities (but has a great voice line if you do kill her out of the sky).

The animation delay for tunneling seems like an eternity in a team fight.

For tanks I have really liked playing Venture with Reinhardt, Doomfist, and Junker Queen the most. If they follow up on your targets it is extremely devastating. Also, you have the ability to follow up on theirs. For DPS I like playing with a Tracer, Ashe, Echo, Mei the most. For supports I like Lucio and Kiriko but don't mind a Moira although getting vanilla Nano'd by an Ana is kinda crazy how much dmg you can actually do.

Overall I think they are a great addition to the DPS lineup. Their skill expression is very engaging and challenging but they aren't so tough that you can't get value from playing them rather plainly. I have noticed how on maps that I have good flanking routes and can sneak behind the team get a negative response from the enemy team claiming how broken they are meanwhile the moments you have to play like Brigitte they feel extremely underpowered. I feel like this a healthy balance.

I just think they are hella neat.

Below the cut I will have some highlights and potg as Venture. Mostly it is comp but I played them in a 4 stack in quick play for a couple of games with other plat+ players despite my dps being silver.

Was in 3v3 and got POTG because Zenyatta didn't let me die.

The Scene: One teammate is dead, I'm Ramattra with Zenyatta as my support, the enemy team is Roadhog, Mercy, and Ashe, we're on the Necropolis map, the enemy team are all inside the middle building infront of the objective.

I enter through the front door, placing a shield infront of it to protect Zenyatta, and throw Ramattra's vortex thing at the enemies, and come face first with the Roadhog and Ashe, I take alot of damage and run out to the Zenyatta, they heal me and I run back in staying close to the door incase I need to retreat. I use nemesis form to kill the Ashe I also attempt killing the Mercy. I retreat to Zenyatta again. The moment I can return to nemesis form I go back in, I kill the Mercy right as they revied Ashe, somehow my ult is ready so I activate it, kill the Ashe, I make sure Zenyatta is behind me and go in to kill Roadhog with my ult, Zenyatta gets in a few hits and I finally get the Roadhog.

Motherfucker really went, beat their ass, I'll protect yours, and I love that Zenyatta for it.

i was playing lucio earlier today on qp and ashe set me on fire when i was low hp my amp was on cooldown and my passive healing couldn't get past the flames so i stood in the road and waited to die. a soldier 76 came and looked at me for like 2 seconds before putting down a heal for me and i was at like 8 hp and it saved me. he waved goodbye and sprinted past me and i was starstruck and i fell in love i think bc i pocketed him so hard after that. i gave him the potg by ulting with him and making him zoom into the enemy team I sent a friend request but he never accepted it... :( i'll never forget him

Sombra POTG from Open Queue QP I got last night ... but also, I didn't start this game as Sombra. I wanted to play Tracer, but the enemy Ashe after about two deaths (they got rez'd and then died again) immediately swapped to Sombra. So, I swapped to try and counteract their swap.

By the end of the game.. the Sombra had switched to Zarya.

got potg as ashe and the majority of what was going on was me missing my shots. no ultimate used no nothing just me sniping people. that's literally so embarrassing this game isn't very good

So I spend 70 hours grinding to Battle Tier for this season on the TV, which gives me quite a headache. I’m at Tier 66.

I find out my aiming is much better at handheld mode cause I can move the Switch to get a better aiming shot. It’s how I got POTG twice as LifeWeaver, but it doesn’t count cause it’s an event.

I just figured out on TV mode, I need to move my controller to focus my aim better. Still does give me a headache after playing too long.

I can only play 4 games on the handheld before the battery on the Switch gets low.

I really want that Hanzo mythic skin cause of his pet dragons look so cool with him on said skin. But I have a bone to pick up with Hanzo, because he’s most likely to kill me via quick plays.

Least I’m up to 2000 credits I got while grinding. So I don’t purposely buy coins to get the Ashe skin. I prefer the Echo Victorian Doll instead. She looks very cuter than the Ashe Doll.

Maybe cause I’m biased because as a kid, my mom had a collection of porcelain dolls that looked similar to Ashe’s new skin. So I’m not in wanting it right away.

But I did get Space Radar Cassidy and his undead skin too. I want to focus my aim better and learn to finally play him. But regardless of constantly playing as support, I felt it was my calling. I want to heal teammates and do everything from the backlines.

Sorry for venting. I’m actually enjoy Trials of the Sanctuary and I did up to 90 games so far.

It's amazing the psychological value you can get from playing a hero that might have fallen out of favor in recent seasons sometimes. Sorry not sorry to all the ventures, sombras, and tracers I've bullied tonight on Brigette. Just remember there are supports who are built to fundamentally shut you down that aren't Baptiste (I needed a break from aiming after all the Juno, Illari, and Baptiste I've been playing this week). Sometimes it's fun to just be a mace blender.

Daan: Mercy and Ana main. Often queues with marcoh and karin. Annoying mercy pulls out the glock and chases down enemy supports, scarily good aim on ana and great offensive nades. Nano's supports for the funny which pisses karin off. Karin: Pharah main but heavily relys on daan pocketing her, begs for nano (she doesn't get it) Marcoh: Lucio one trick, really good lucio but can't play anyone else, has the lucio frog skin on it's his favourite. Olivia: Sniper player, ashe is her favourite. Will absolutely roll the enemy team and has the best BOB timing. starts every match by typing "good luck have fun ^^" and ends every match with "good game well played" Abella: Tank player, Rein and junker queen player, great at peeling for her supports Osaa: dps moira or dps zen, consistently gets potg adds a little spray or voiceline spams after a kill. he does not heal do not ask him to heal. Pav: plays only soldier 76 like a FREAK. Is a good at soldier but moans in voice chat. Henryk: bastion player, can't play anyone else. Hardstuck bronze somehow despite playing bastion, blames everyone else (its usually his fault). Levi: Also a bastion player but a very good one, will swap if asked but likes playing bastion because he thinks he's nice. Duo queues with marina because he doesn't like playing on his own. Marina: scarily good kiriko player, could take on a whole team, great timing with her suzu and good balance between heals and dps. says "gg <3" at the end of a match. Samarie: plays only sombra and follows marina around the map while invis. Tanaka: started out as a soldier 76 with zero game sense and would run off the maps but is now a top 500 dps player, scarily good tracer and genji. Cannot queue with any of the other contestants sadly as he's too high rank <:( August: Dps lucio, knows all the rollouts to get to point in like 6 seconds, knows the best boop locations. crazy fucking wall riding.
