Posting this for @nephstardis who did this research to put into perspective just how incredible it is for something to have a 94% rating on R.T. And how lucky the 3 platforms would be to host OFMD. She writes:
Spent my morning looking at rotten tomatoes scores for some of the big 3 companies biggest shows, here’s just a couple shows that OFMDs score beats:
(OFMD: 94%)
Netflix:
- Peaky Blinders (93%)

- YOU (91%)
- The Sandman (88%)
- Haunting of Bly Manor (88%)
- The Umbrella Academy (86%)

Modern Losers’ Club Headcanons
Plot: Individual headcanons of the modern Loser’ about different things they’d do and love (mostly during high school)
Warnings: slight Reddie, shit ton of Stenburough, drug use + mentions of sex + swearing
——————————————————————————
Bill Denbrough:
~ He’s the artist, everyone knew that.
~Typical art kid who won all the awards and participated in every art class his school offered.
~ He just didn’t take choir or band because we know this boy has no musical abilities at all.
~ Bill would save up all his allowance and holiday money so that he could buy that really good drawing app that he could use on his IPad.
~ After he got it, there was no way to get him to look up at you for more than ten seconds. He would fall in love with digital art.
~ Remember he took all of the art classes? Well, creative writing and poetry we’re considered arts at Derry High School, so that’s where he fell in love with writing.
~ Suprisingly, he would be really into heavy metal. Bands like Bring Me the Horizon and Of Mice and Men would blare in his headphones while he drew in his room late at night.
~ Bill would also really love watching indie movies on Netflix and other platforms. He’s lowkey a movie buff, but he doesn’t tell people too much.
~ His favorite movie from the past decade would probably be Moonrise Kingdom (good movie!!) or The Skeleton Twins (also good movie!!)
~ Bill’s favorite book would 10000% be Turtles All The Way Down by John Green because of the main character and her battle with anxiety.
——————————————————————————
Mike Hanlon:
~ He runs a cooking YouTube channel, you can’t fight me on this one.
~ Mike would definitely have one of those motorized scooters, idk seems like a Mike thing
~ He’s in love with video games but only the ones that are based on a lot of skill. He doesn’t like first person shooters, nor does he like any games with violence at all. Tbh, Papa’s Pizzeria is right up his alley.
~ Mike would be a gym try hard, most definitely. But in every other class he’d just sit on his phone.
~ But he’s so smart that he’d pass all the tests anyway.
~ He’d work a lot just so he could afford the newest phone because he thinks it gives people less of a reason to pick on him and bully him. (News flash: it doesn’t)
~ Whenever Mike isn’t working, he volunteers at the animal shelter in Derry. He runs the Instagram account :)
~ Probably one of the guys who posts shirtless pics on Instagram because he likes the attention the girls give him in the comments.
~ Will answer any of Bill’s texts at 3am when he wants feedback on a new piece of art.
~ A secret theatre kid, no doubt. Not really a musical kid, but he loves acting and just being on stage with everyone’s attention on him.
——————————————————————————
Richie Tozier:
~ Speaking of theatre kids, Richie is the BIGGEST fucking one. He has been in every musical and play that his school has done since 6th grade, and he was one of the best kids they had.
~ He wears Pierce the Veil and Sleeping with Sirens shirts, but Richie mostly listens to softer bands like Arctic Monkeys and The Neighbourhood.
~ He has a bi pride pin on his backpack. Kids will sometimes pull it off and throw it around, but he just pulls another one out of a ziploc bag full of them in the tiny front pouch of his bag and sticks it on there.
~ Richie unapologetically owns a Juul and will sometimes let Bev borrow it as long as she pays him “25 cents a hit”, which she never does.
~ Posts music on SoundCloud. He’s not much of a singer outside of the musicals because he’s mostly shy with his talent; however, he does a lot of instrumentals.
~ Richie shops are thrift stores most of the time. He’ll take Eddie with him and though Eddie won’t touch anything until it’s been washed twice, Richie will buy him anything he likes.
~ He LOVES Harry Potter. He found the first book when he was younger and he just fell in love with the story. He owns all the first editions and all of the movies.
~ Goes to small venues to see bands that no one knows. Richie will go to so many concerts because he likes the escape it brings for him. He’s in his element when he goes to concerts.
~ Despite what many people think, he isn’t a whore :0 He just flirts a lot and he actually didn’t lose his virginity till he was 17 at a party. He regrets it, though, cause he was drunk off his ass.
~ He was also in the color guard for his high school’s marching band. A lot of the girls from the theatre stuff begged him to be apart of it because he could dance really well, and he ended up being in it for both the indoor and outdoor seasons all throughout high school.
——————————————————————————
Eddie Kaspbrak:
~ BOOKWORM, BOOKWORM, B O O K W O R M!!! This boy would spend every second he could just browsing the books that his school library had.
~ After he yelled at his mom for his pills, he started to kind of overcome his germaphobe tendencies, but he still was very iffy about touching things in places he’d never been.
~ For example, Richie took him to the park one time and he had never been there before, so the whole time he was holding his noses and steering clear of the snot nosed little kids.
~ Him and Richie definitely dated at some point or another. Whether to get a feel for guys or just for each other, but it did happen. Beverly was the only one who ever knew.
~ Eddie fell in love with engineering at school. He would always call one of the Losers at an ungodly hour in the morning and rant about how all of the buildings in town were built and with what materials. Honestly, Ben was the only one who shared this interest with him.
~ Eddie was the first to get his own car so all of the Losers would pile into his Jeep. Richie always tried to convince him to take off the doors, but Eddie thought that that was the biggest goddamn safety hazard he’d ever heard.
~ As they all got older, obviously him and Richie stayed close, but he also got surprisingly close with Ben and Ben would gush about Beverly to him after Eddie would excitedly explain how a car’s engine works or something like that.
~ Eddie was the one to convince Beverly to go after Ben and stop pining over Bill.
~ Eddie went to concerts with Richie all the time, and even if the sweaty roadies grossed him out, he fell in love with the bass killing his eardrums and the way the mic static could transform someone’s voice.
~ He also joined his school’s marching band (mainly cause Richie begged him) and was fucking AMAZING at playing snare drums.
——————————————————————————
Stanley Uris:
~ He was the last one to enter high school, everyone a year ahead of him, but he was ironically the most popular among the lower class men.
~ Stan was a very private person, but his willingness to do other’s homework for $5 a page made him infamous.
~ Because of all this money he’d been making, he’d buy the Losers presents all the time. He would treat them to their favorite snacks whenever they went to Keene’s or to a new shirt whenever they went to the mall over in Bangor. And he never went over budget because he’s a goddamn accountant by nature.
~ He had a massive crush on Bill and asked him to homecoming his freshman year. Yeah, they were bullied, but Stan couldn’t have been more happier.
~ Bill convinced him to tryout for the baseball team. He tried out for pitcher and got it immediately. He was also one of the sports kids who would post on his Snapchat whenever they had a game.
~ Him and Bill ended up dating up until junior year, when Bill admitted that he wanted to date at least one girl before college and Stan wasn’t mad because he honestly wasn’t feeling it anymore. Afterwards, they both started dating cheerleaders.
~ Stan was in Calculus his sophomore year of high school, which was the class that all of the AP seniors took. Many people called him a genius, he just thanked the internet.
~ Stan fell in love with indie bands like R.O.A.R and Florence + The Machines. Richie did, however, convince him to go to concerts with him and Eds. He might’ve not enjoyed the music, but he still loved being with his best friends since diapers.
~ He didn’t like movies too much but would watch them with Bill. He enjoyed TV shows a lot more. He’s definitely a true crime baby.
~ Stan also fell in love with photography because he was forced to take the class. He begged his parents to buy him a camera for his birthday, and his many cork boards were filled with pictures of his friends and birds.
——————————————————————————
Ben Hanscom:
~ Was a track start in high school. He ran off all of his fat and just fell in love with the high of running (tbh this is my favorite part about Ben’s character. like such a determined boy 🥺)
~ Ben enjoyed sitting at the library with Eddie and just watching him peruse books, usually pointing a few that he had read and liked. He also just loved the fact that him and Eddie were able to get so close as they got older.
~ Ben was in all the engineering courses his school offered. He was just so happy that he could take classes that pertained to the career path he wanted to go down.
~ He was able to finally get Beverly their senior year. He had been in love with her for the longest time, and she asked him to homecoming.
~ Ben also considered trying out for the football team, but it conflicted with the winter track season so he wasn’t able to; however, him, Mike, and Bill would always play their own small games in the field by Mike’s house.
~ While Stan helped everything with their math homework, Ben helped everyone with their history homework. He was a big history nerd, and everyone knew he paid attention the most.
~ He lost a bet one time and Richie was able to give him a stick and poke tattoo anywhere of his choosing. So now on the inside of his left ring finger he has R.T. written messily.
~ Ben loves pop music. He had always liked it, and some of his favorite artists were Katy Perry and Sia.
~ He rode his bike to school everyday. He was a very big proponent for the environment and hated the idea of driving, so he’d pass up the rides from Eddie or Richie and just bike with his headphones in.
~ Ben was apart of the school’s Green Team and protested climate change and the use of fossil fuels. When he had free time, he’d study ways that he could benefit the environment when he became an architect.
——————————————————————————
Beverly Marsh:
~ She was an English wiz. It was her favorite subject, and she fell in love with analyzing poetry and other forms of literary work.
~ Beverly started to let her hair grow out again and she was relieved to see that it started to grow out straight. She hated her curly hair.
~ She bleached her hair a few times throughout high school; she hated the red because it reminded her too much of her mother.
~ Her and Richie’s friendship fell off big time, but she got super close with Bill, Ben, and Mike. Her crush in Bill didn’t deplete for a while, even after him and Stan started dating. She still had hope.
~ Eddie told her about Ben and it really changed her whole perspective on everything. But that wasn’t until junior year.
~ Though she didn’t have too good of a singing voice, she loved being in choir. The angelic reverberations throughout the auditorium whenever they performed always gave her chills and she wanted so desperately to be a part of it.
~ Beverly wrote a lot of poetry. She wrote some to her friends, to her dead mom, to her asshole dad. Just to whoever she was focused on in that moment.
~ She helped Mike after school at the animal shelter and actually ended up adopting a kitten for herself.
~ Luckily, her dad didn’t mind the cat too much as long as Bev took care of it and didn’t bother him for a single thing.
~ Beverly didn’t get her license until she was well into her twenties, but she loved hanging her arm out of the passenger’s side window of Richie’s car and listen to the bands that he’d blast with closed eyes.

Lost Classic #5
ODD THOMAS
Dir./Wri. STEPHEN SOMMERS; Music. JOHN SWIHART; Starring. ANTON YELCHIN, ADDISON TIMLIN, WILLEM DAFOE, GUGU MBATHA-RAW, NICO TORTORELLA, SHULER HENSLEY, PATTON OSWALT; R.T. 93 mins; 2014, USA
WHAT IT’S ABOUT: Based on the bestseller by Dean Koontz, this quirky horror thriller introduces us to the uniquely named Odd Thomas (Yelchin), a short-order cook in the small Californian desert town of Pico Mundo, who communes with the spirits of the restless dead and can predict catastrophes, using his powers to right wrongs and solve murders while covered for by his good friend, police chief Wyatt Porter (Dafoe). But a particularly harrowing encounter with creepy bad-vibe magnet “Fungus Bob” (Hensley) convinces Odd that a disaster of epic proportions is on the horizon, one that even he may not be able to save his sleepy little town from.
WHY IT’S LOST: Writer-director Stephen Sommers’ intended franchise opener (Koontz has written a whole series of Odd Thomas books, with this film based on the first novel, so there’s plenty of material to adapt) turned out to be a heartbreaking stillborn, delayed for two years after wrap when it ended up shelved while a bitter legal battle over breach of contract waged between the production company and advertisers. When Sommers finally got to complete post and usher it into a frustratingly brief and underwhelming theatrical release, it barely cracked a million at the box office, bombing spectacularly. It subsequently limped onto home video, but remains an annoyingly fringe treat that’s at least enjoyed small on-demand success on Netflix. Needless to say that franchise never happened …
WHY YOU SHOULD DISCOVER IT: This is, of course, a shame of biblical proportions, because this movie ROCKS. Dean Koontz may most usually be described as The Poor Man’s Stephen King, but he’s written some corkers in his time, and his Odd Thomas books rank among his very best work, the central character remaining his very best creation. Odd is an very likeable everyman hero whose world-weary, self-deprecating charm makes him immensely sympathetic, and the late Anton Yelchin (Sommers’ ONLY choice for the role) was PERFECTLY cast, once again proving what a genuinely awesome actor he was in a performance which is by turns endearing, underdog-tough, super funny and heartbreakingly soulful; Addison Timlin, meanwhile, is sweet yet sassy as his complicated but deeply devoted girlfriend Stormy Llewellyn, and Willem Dafoe is typically excellent as his occasionally exasperated de facto father figure Chief Porter. Stephen Sommers may have suffered an irritating correlation of increasing success yet decreasing quality with his films since breaking into the big-time with 1999’s excellent The Mummy (the first sequel was enjoyable enough in a guiltily pleasurable way, but Van Helsing frequently fell painfully wide of the mark, and the less said about G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra the better), but this was a welcome return to form with something much simpler and ultimately FAR more rewarding, and in my opinion this is his best film to date, a ripping little gem of a supernatural mystery that largely stays respectfully close its source material and is all the better for it. Sommers certainly cut RIGHT DOWN on his characteristic excess to deliver a lean, streamlined thriller that moves the increasingly twisty plot along at an impressive clip, but never loses sight of the quirky charm of Odd and his wonderfully weird little corner of the world. It’s frequently very funny, but thankfully most of the humour comes from Koontz rather than Sommers, so it’s pleasingly sophisticated and thoroughly excellent, and for once Sommers didn’t go nuts with the visual effects, paring right back on the digital flair so it only hits when it’s most needed. Best part of all? Dean Koontz absolutely LOVED the finished picture, and rightly so – this is a cracking film, but one you have to watch without thinking about the bigger picture because it’s so damn frustrating, a truly CRIMINAL waste of a golden opportunity for what could have been a brilliant screen horror franchise. Such a shame …

Twitter Ads
Advertising on Twitter, simply put , is promoting your company's advertising content on Twitter- hence Twitter ads . Even though all Twitter ads are tagged with the phrase, promoted they look like every other non sponsored tweet. The goal of launching a promotional campaign on Twitter is to increase the reach of your posts. At the same time and thank's to social media's ability to segment audiences extremely well, you can focus on getting those users who comply with your target audience.
Twitter ads work similarly to advertising on Google Ad Words. Like establishing Pay/Cost Per Click(P-P-C/C-P-C respectively) a Cost Per Engagement C-P-E formula is implemented. This simply means that you only pay when users interact with an Ad , in other words when a user clicks on it ,expands it, RT's it, favourites it or responds to it.
types of twitter advertising campaigns
followers
If you wish to be seen more on Twitter and increase your number of followers, this is the type of campaign you will want to use.

personalized
This is the most frequent type of campaign Twitter Ads offers. It's perfect for advanced users or for businesses that want to combine the better part of various options.
advantages of using twitter ads
immediacy
Twitter is the micro-blogging social network and is primarily characterized by it's shortness. On twitter the here and now is what's important. In this sense the obtained results (assuming everything is well -planned) come quickly.

Even though advertised tweets are tagged with the word promoted(which is clearly visible among-st organic tweets)they are seamlessly integrated within a user's timeline and offer the same reactionary options as non-promoted tweets.(e.g. R.T, like e.t.c)
Multi Display And Mobile Version
Twitter allows for a perfect viewing experience regardless of the screen size /type:it's also perfectly optimized for cell phones. this is extremely relevant today and it will be even more so in the future since , every day there are more and more people using their phones instead of their computers.
Better C-T-R
Various studies have concluded that Twitter Ads have a better C-T-R maintained overtime.Compared to the rest of the social media networks , twitter ads seem to be more effective in this field. This could be due to the fact that there are less companies taking advantage of twitter than there are with the other social networks(which are already saturated).
Good Practices For Increasing R-O-I With Twitter Ads.
The Now Of Social Media
What's important with the Twitter is the here and now. If you take advantage of this immediacy and include , for example mentions of current happenings on your feed ,offers that only last for a few more hours or breaking news the R-O-I of your Twitter Ads will increase.
Power In Numbers
Although twenty and 20 are exactly the same thing , visually speaking , the number itself has more power (even more so if you are referencing a discount or a percentage of a discount ). The recommendation is always use this option;consequently it also means using less characters than writing out the full word. needless to say ,carefully choosing each character on twitter is of the upmost importance.
Newness Makes Magic On Twitter
If something is new, there's a much bigger chance of it doing extremely well if you are using Twitter Ads.Therefore make sure to keep your audience in the loop when you talk about something new and exciting.
Chance Triumphs In Micro-Blogging
Practically everyone likes to try their luck to win the lottery /raffles;furthermore on Twitter, these types of publications, are also well received. So if your business goals fit this type of campaign don't hesitate to it better to R-O-I.
Questions And /Or Polls
Another helpful Twitter tool is in relation to interaction and generating engagement. Any type of general question /poll which requires a response on the user's part can help to achieve both your business objectives and to increase your overall brand awareness.
A Picture Is Worth More Than A Thousand Words With Twitter Cards
Twitter allows you to integrate more formats than just text with the help twitter cards. With Twitter cards you can include any kind of necessary information in order to improve engagement or increase the R-O-I of your Ad. Tweets that have extended formats get 52% more RT's and 313% more interaction.
Benefits Of Twitter Ads
Improves Traffic On Websites
Advertising on Twitter is beneficial if you wish to improve traffic on your website. Also Twitter is one of the paramount social media tools for driving traffic to your blog. Your efforts on Twitter can lead to real business results. When you conduct paid promotions on Twitter ,your tweet consists of certain high traffic keywords, generated using keyword tools. The keyword targeting helps your brand by not just by increasing the number of followers on your twitter profile but also by driving traffic to your landing page.
If you don't wish to target ads using keywords, you may also target tailored audience segment, or target similar interests, and use measurement tools like conversion tracking - all of which are delivering strong R-O-I to all Twitter advertisers. However you target, the whole purpose of paid promotions is fulfilled by the improved website traffic. Marketers are more likely to turn to Twitter as a useful platform to drive tangible business goals like sales, leads and increased website traffic.
Comparatively Affordable
If you are a small business and wish to spend on paid advertising , you can qualify for twitter ads . Your followers are more likely to make a future purchase from your brand after they follow or interact with you on Twitter. Twitter ads don't make you invest a lot of money. Twitter targets using a variety of options, and reduces your paid promotion cost relatively.
Build And Own Your Online Audience
Even more interestingly, Twitter allows you to get closer to a specific set of audience who are ready to follow you because you are fulfilling their needs and benefiting them too. You can target audience based on their interests. You can qualify the search as per broad as well as specific interests. Once there's a lift in your followers, you can communicate with them using organic tweets and get to know them better.
Optimizing Your Brand
Back linking your website using Twitter paid promotions , you can achieve desired visibility. With every link associated to a tweet you are optimizing your website. Though it may not receive the same number of clicks that you might get otherwise, this definitely improves the off page S-E-O for your website. This back-linking technique also builds a certain audience that has viewed you, and now has your brand’s name at the top of their mind. The recall factor improves significantly with visibility.
Increased Conversions
You should definitely discover Twitter Advertising for your business. If you’ve decided to promote on Twitter, you must ensure that you post a great content that enticed the audience and it becomes credible in a way. The amount that is used to promote will not just bring in visibility for your brand, but also increase conversions for the brand. A remarkable Twitter campaign can work wonders for the brand.
Cost-Effectiveness:
For cash-strapped small-business owners, using Twitter can be a cost-effective way to reach customers and prospects around the world. There is no charge to open and operate a Twitter account, so your only associated expenses are your computer and Internet connection, which you likely already have. You can send and receive tweets via mobile devices such as cell phones at no cost other than those required by your service provider, such as the cost for text messages. Twitter offers additional marketing tools at no or low cost.
Target Marketing:
With Twitter, you can locate people who have similar interests, which can help you target potential customers. For instance, if your business is selling model trains, you can easily find other model-train enthusiasts and "follow" them, which is the process of enlisting to receive tweets sent by others. Through networking, you can build your own following and develop long-term relationships that can lead to sales. The process of "retweeting," where your followers send your tweets on to other interested parties, can also help build your prospect base
Immediacy:
Twitter allows you to get your message out at any time of day or night without delays. If you come across an important bit of information that can be of immediate benefit to your followers, you can send a quick tweet and gain a competitive advantage. For example, if a sudden change in market conditions makes owning a product you sell of great benefit to your followers, you can be the first to communicate the change and make sales as a result.

Things to read while you’re having lunch. Monday, 10/26
How San Francisco became a COVID-19 success story as other cities stumbled (Maura Dolan/Los Angeles Times) – If the US had handled COVID-19 as well as San Francisco has, 170,000 people now dead would be alive today.
Insisting that the Hunter Biden laptop is fake is a trap. So is insisting that it’s real. (Thomas Rid/The Washington Post) – My issue is that the leak, even if true, doesn’t tell us anything new.
What global elections have taught Silicon Valley about misinformation (Steven Overly/Politico) – “Google, Facebook and Twitter have battled election-related misinformation from France to Nigeria to India since 2016. Now, they have to prove what they’ve learned.”
The case against Google is good, no matter what Trump had to do with it. (Chris Sagers/Slate) – Disclaimers: I work for a Google competitor. I use Google extensively, because I live in 2020. And I reflexively oppose all monopolies.
Quibi Is Hollywood’s Biggest Short-Form Failure—but Not Its First (Joe Flint and R.T. Watson/The Wall Street Journal) – Quibi pitched high-production shows in a format – short videos – dominated by user-generated content.
The core concept is sound. Why not have stories told in ~10-minute chapters?
But Quibi’s leadership was cack-handed. Among its many mistakes: You had to watch the video on phones – TVs and PCs were not supported. And the content was all aimed at GenX and Boomers, a demographic that’s more likely to prefer video on TV. Also: Don’t put two Boomers in charge of a network aimed at Millennials and Gen Z.
Romance Scammer Used Deepfakes to Impersonate a Navy Admiral and Bilk Widow Out of Nearly $300,000 (Justin Rohrlich/Daily Beast) – This scam was complex and heartbreaking even by the standards of romance scams.

If your windows were broken, your family business destroyed, in the protests and violence following the killing of George Floyd, how would you respond? With compassion and understanding, if you were any of business owners whose responses were compiled by Andrea Fjeldberg on her Facebook page. They focused on what is most important: the life and tragic death of George Floyd, murdered by Minneapolis police on Monday, May 25, 2020. They understand that this murder is part of structural racism in Minnesota, and they demand change and justice.
This is far from the first time that a Black man has died at the hands of police in Minneapolis or in Minnesota. Think Terence Franklin in 2013, Jamar Clark in 2015, Philando Castile in 2016. These deaths made headlines and sparked protests, as persistent and pervasive abuse seldom does. Walking while Black, driving while Black, riding a bicycle while Black: anything can lead to police stops and abuse, especially, though not exclusively, in lower-income communities.
Minneapolis police have a long history and culture of violence and disregard for human rights, especially against the Black community. Tony Bouza, Minneapolis police chief for eight years during the 1980s, repeatedly fought against that culture and lost. Decades later, Mayor R.T. Rybak also failed to reform the police during his 2002-2014 tenure as mayor. Rybak told WCCO this week that this failure was due in large part to the power of Bob Kroll, longtime president of the Minneapolis police union:
“We’ve never had a person leading the Federation who is as bombastic, who is as overtly racist, who is as likely to provide comfort to someone when they do something wrong, who is as central to that toxic culture as Bob Kroll,” said Rybak. “And it is time to name names. Bob Kroll is a cancer on this police department, on this city.”
The George Floyd murder is the first time that the police officers involved have been promptly fired. And it is the first time that a white officer has been charged with killing a Black man.
That is not enough to combat entrenched, structural racism manifested not only in policing but also in racial disparities in income, education, employment, and health. In 2019, a study ranked the Twin Cities as the fourth-worst metropolitan area in the country for Black residents.
“The study found that the typical black household in the Twin Cities (Minneapolis, St. Paul and Bloomington) earns $34,174 a year. That is 43.4% of the median income of a typical white household in the metro, which is $78,706. Typical white households in the metro actually make $17,000 more than the $61,363 national figure for white households.
“While 95.9% of white adults in the metro area have a high school diploma (the largest share of any city in the country according to the study), just 82.2% of black adults in the metro area do. That’s below the national black high school attainment rate of 84.9%.
“Another notable statistic is that 10.3% of black Americans are unemployed in the Twin Cities, compared to 3.6% of white Americans.”
Before COVID-19, poverty among black Minnesotans stood at 32 percent, compared to 7 percent for white Minnesotans.
With all of this, is it any wonder that rage exploded on May 26? The amazing achievement is that rage channeled into nonviolent protest. Protest began at 38th and Chicago, the site of the murder, on Tuesday night. Protesters marched to the Third Precinct police station, where the officers worked, on Lake Street. Police responded during the march and at the precinct by firing tear gas canisters, rubber bullets, and “marking rounds” into the still-peaceful crowds of protesters.
And then came violence. That first night, some attacked the Target store and other buildings on Lake Street, breaking windows, looting, and setting fires. The business owners whose statements are posted above said they understand that rage, and that property loss is nothing compared to the loss of George Floyd’s life, compared to the losses and injuries suffered by black and brown and indigenous people in Minnesota every day.
And yet, even on that first night, the first window-breaking came from a white man, dressed in black, wearing a gas mask and wielding a hammer. Video of his window-breaking at Auto Zone is all over social media, with pleas to identify him.
The next day, action in St. Paul had nothing to do with protest and everything to do with destruction. News media still talked about “protesters” looting Target and breaking windows and setting fires, but that was not accurate. These were rioters. They were not the same people as the protesters. Peaceful protest continued—in downtown Minneapolis, at 38th and Chicago, and even on Lake Street. Rioters and vandals also continued.
The continuing hostility of Minneapolis police to all protesters and their attacks on protesters and press only intensified mistrust and rage, both among protesters and in the larger community. So did the utter failure of police and firefighters and National Guard to protect communities against destruction, looting, and fires. The slowness of County Attorney Mike Freeman in charging Officer Derrick Chauvin and the lack of charges against the other three officers also increased anger and mistrust.
We will continue to demand justice for George Floyd and to mourn his death. Grief and mourning and rage will continue. So will mistrust of politicians’ promises and anger at police.
Trust must be earned by actions.
In the meantime, a war rages in our streets. Some protesters insist that they understand the impulse to violence and that “We need change more than we need peace.” Nonetheless, most of the violence comes from others. For more information, see these posts:

“Do I have that book tag” (originally by youtuber: Keeping Tabs)
Basically, there is a list of prompts and you need to try and find a book on your bookshelf that fits the prompt. Since I’m at home for the Christmas holidays, it seemed like a perfect time to give this a go since I have access to all the books in my room.
I changed the rules slightly to make things more interesting:
I could only pick one book per author (I have one book series that fits 4 of the prompts, so that would be boring)
I had to have read and enjoyed the book (not just own it)
I’ll put the prompts at the bottom of this in case anyone else feels like doing it!
.
1. Do you have a book with deckled edges?
(most of the versions of this series I have could fit this one)
.
2. DO you have a book with 3 or more people on the cover?
Clearly well travelled and well loved
.
3. Do you have a book based on another fictional story?
.
4. Do you have a book with a title 10 letters long?
.
5. Do you have a book with a title that starts and ends with the same letter? (Does not have to include ‘the’ or ‘an’ etc... at the beginning)
.
6. Do you have a Mass Market Paperback book?
.
7. Do you have a book written by an author using a pen name?
Pen name / pseudonym used by J.K. Rowling for her crime novels
.
8. Do you have a book with a character's name in the title?
.
9. Do you have a book with 2 maps in it?
the obvious choice!!
.
10. Do you have a book that was turned into a TV show?
you can still see the post-it notes from when I had to analyse this (and a few other books I’ve put on this list) at school.
.
11. Do you have a book written by someone who is originally famous for something else? (celebrity/athlete/politician/tv personality...)
I didn’t want to go for an autobiography here, because they seemed to obvious for me. Anyway, I figured Mark Gatiss is better known for his work on television than as a novel writer
.
12. Do you have a book with a clock on the cover?
.
13. Do you have a poetry book?
(another one we analysed at school)
.
14. Do you have a book with an award stamp on it?
This was the closest I could get - amazingly, I don’t seem to have any books with a stamp on, but this does say it won an award, so I figured it counts.
.
15. Do you have a book written by an author with the same initials as you?
...can I get away with this?
The short answer, is “No”. I was looking for a book written by an author with the initials “R.T.”, and I don’t have any of those - though seeing as my initials are R.L.T., this one got annoyingly close!
.
16. Do you have a book of short stories?
.
17. Do you have a book that is between 500-510 pages long?
This one took me the longest time to successfully find - 501 pages!!
Shoutout to my copy of the ‘Origin of Species’ (Charles Darwin) for being annoying with 513 pages, and ‘The Gargoyle’ (Andrew Davidson) for being even more annoying at 499 pages.
.
18. Do you have a book that was turned into a movie?
Several that have been included on this list, and quite a few more that have not, though this is one that I really enjoyed the film as well, so I thought why not?
.
19. Do you have a graphic novel?
The only one I own - also studied in school!
.
20. Do you have a book written by 2 or more authors?
This was one of my favourite books when I was younger - and is actually interchangeable with the book I put for prompt 8 (also written by 2 or more authors, and has the name of the main character in the title)
.
.
Here are the prompts if anyone feels like filling it in themselves! I’d be interested to see what books other people have for these!
1. Do you have a book with deckled edges?
2. DO you have a book with 3 or more people on the cover?
3. Do you have a book based on another fictional story?
4. Do you have a book with a title 10 letters long?
5. Do you have a book with a title that starts and ends with the same letter?
6. Do you have a Mass Market Paperback book?
7. Do you have a book written by an author using a pen name?
8. Do you have a book with a character's name in the title?
9. Do you have a book with 2 maps in it?
10. Do you have a book that was turned into a TV show?
11. Do you have a book written by someone who is originally famous for something else? (celebrity/athlete/politician/tv personality...)
12. Do you have a book with a clock on the cover?
13. Do you have a poetry book?
14. Do you have a book with an award stamp on it?
15. Do you have a book written by an author with the same initials as you?
16. Do you have a book of short stories?
17. Do you have a book that is between 500-510 pages long?
18. Do you have a book that was turned into a movie?
19. Do you have a graphic novel?
20. Do you have a book written by 2 or more authors?
Here’s the original video, for anyone who wants to give it a watch!

Guilty Pleasure #8
DEMON KNIGHT
Dir. ERNEST DICKERSON; Wri. MARK BISHOP, ETHAN REIFF & CYRUS VORIS; Music. EDWARD SHEARMUR; Starring. BILLY ZANE, WILLIAM SADLER, JADA PINKETT SMITH, THOMAS HADEN CHURCH, JOHN SCHUCK, C.C.H. POUNDER, BRENDA BAKKE, DICK MILLER, JOHN KASSIR; R.T. 92 mins; 1995, USA
WHAT IT’S ABOUT: The Crypt Keeper (Kassir) presents the first feature film spinoff from popular TV horror anthology series Tales From the Crypt, telling the story of an ancient battle fought on Earth between Heaven and Hell. Frank Brayker (Sadler) is the lone warrior fighting for Good, pursued across the New Mexico desert by his Evil opposite number The Collector (Zane), a demon-in-human-form determined to acquire the potentially world-ending artefact in Brayker’s possession. With his time running dangerously short, Brayker takes refuge in an old church-turned-boarding house in the rundown desert town of Wormwood, run by world-weary battle-axe Irene (Pounder) and her work-release convict charge Jeryline (Pinkett Smith), but when The Collector arrives he’s forced to make a desperate last stand with the ragtag bunch of strays living there.
WHY IT’S GUILTY: There are inherent flaws in this film, given that it’s ultimately just an extended episode of the TV series made for the big screen, and there’s an inevitable clunky disconnect between the actual story itself, which is played largely in earnest, and the bookending opening and closing scenes in which the Crypt Keeper (portrayed with characteristic wild abandon) works to bring his vision to realization and then unleashes it on the unwitting cinema-going masses. It’s also very much a product of its time, an over-the-top 90s horror comedy cast in the pre-Scream mould that was becoming increasingly tired and worn, basically a retro-video nasty masquerading as knowing and “post-modern”, but not quite convincing the more intelligent viewers. And yet …
WHY IT’S A PLEASURE: There’s much to enjoy in the decidedly original story on offer in the main feature, a deceptively simple, archetypal battle between Good and Evil that plays out in a taut siege thriller that not only references the legendary Assault On Precinct 13 but actually stands up to comparison. The film was originally intended for Fright Night director Tom Holland, and it would have been interesting to see what he would have made of it – instead the gig wound up going to Ernest Dickerson, who went on to direct the trashy likes of Snoop Dogg’s atrocious star vehicle Bones, but followers of this blog should remember that he also made Surviving the Game, which I consider another great cinematic guilty pleasure, and I think he did an equally great job here. It’s not a subtle film, but there’s real skill in its execution, the inherent tension in this stakes-raising game of “Ten Little Indians” maintained with piano-wire tautness throughout, punctuated by some impressively visceral, blood-spattered set-pieces that showcase some wonderfully icky creature effects. William Sadler has been one of my favourite character actors for years, and this is one of my favourite roles of his – Brayker’s a true blue-collar everyman hero, lacking any visible superpowers and driven purely by unswerving survival instinct and stubborn determination to see his mission through; Billy Zane, meanwhile, delivers one of the truly great performances of his career, with The Collector proving a deceptively suave and seductive villain on par with his breakthrough turn in Dead Calm. Jada Pinkett Smith was still coming up when she made this, but her star power was immediately evident here, making Jerilyne into a rough-edged but instantly likeable young scrapper whose own heroic worth becomes clear as the film progresses, and there’s a wealth of typically strong turns from a supporting cast of heavyweights including CCH Pounder, Thomas Haden Church and the legendary Dick Miller that makes every scene a joy to watch. The end result is a darkly humorous horror gem that rises above its trashy, pulpy cash-in roots to deliver genuine thrills, spills and quality guilty pleasures. Just remember to avoid Tales From the Crypt’s follow-up feature Bordello of Blood – that really IS a great steaming pile of shite. Unlike this …

The Conversion Trap
“HEY!” shouted Mr. Driver as fire and dashy lines floated around him.
“What do you want?” asked the girl. Her eyes were squinty and a large blob of sweat formed on the back of her head.
“I challenge you to a battle for the fate of the world!!”
With that, Mr. Driver drew an impossible to wield sword and lunged at the girl. In an instant, she spun around with sparkles glitter and kitties appearing out of nowhere in a tornado of light and became Super-Happy-Moonfire-Princess, and a 100 page story about every laser and punch ever thrown (ever) with tons of monologues in between happened.
Sound like a good read?
No.
Why?
It’s too much...everything.
I wrote a similar post a few months ago, but I thought I’d revisit the subject with an example. There are many writers like me who are also big fans of anime, manga and video games. As a result, a lot of us like to transcribe the coolest scripts we have in our head that run like a show, and try to make them into books. It’s a cool premise, but it often doesn’t play out the way we want it to from the reader’s perspective.
My fellow otaku authors, a friendly reminder: Books a medium of words. Comics are a medium of drawings. A picture is worth a thousand words. A story will be never ending or impossible to follow if we don’t simplify and adapt accordingly.
By simplifying the events and not describing every anime trope we would see on screen, we get a more fluid result.
“Hey!” shouted Mr. Driver. His stare was fierce, his stance intimidating.
She slammed her drink on the table, tired of his endless disturbances. “What do you want?”
He reached around his back and drew his blade. While massive, he took a battle-stance as if it were featherweight. She shot up from her seat, knowing he meant business.
“I challenge you to a final fight - for the fate of the world!”
He darted for her, but in a colorful flash her powers activated. The two unstoppable forces clashed for hours, not giving the other an inch.
TLDR: If we, as writers that like to tell over-the-top stories based on our favorite hobby remember to keep things short, simple and accessible to everyone who might not be “in the know”, we’ll have more success, and more fun doing what we do ^^

On Chemistry: Making Activated Carbon and Hand Warmers, by R.T.
The practical usefulness of chemistry is often overlooked. In the video game State of Decay, there are various monologues that characters can randomly give. One such monologue speaks about how one person is amazed that all of the toilet paper disappeared after the zombie apocalypse. He jokes that while everyone else was worried about food and ammunition, someone realized that they’re going to continue to use the bathroom, so they’d better stock up on two-ply. In many ways, this represents the two modes of thought on preparedness. You have the people whose first thought is rightfully their immediate needs. You need food, water, shelter, and safety. And then you have the people who think beyond these needs. Both are equally important. Surviving today means little if you’re going to die tomorrow. However, tomorrow means nothing if you can’t survive today. Basic knowledge alone can help a person in both. Chemistry … Continue reading →
