So the dungeon from your soulslike trpg is actually based on a real place? That's wild

Yeah its based on the Zipaquirá Salt Cathedral, which is an actual church carved out of a salt mine in my country (although it functions more like... half church half tourist attraction nowadays lol like no one is crawling into the fucking Zipaquirá mine for regular church service, you know?), but it's like. Very loosely based.

I took the general concept of "cathedral carved out of a salt mine" from it, and took direct inspiration from actual rooms inside the cathedral for certain rooms in the dungeon (the reflecting pool room, the big room with three naves, the smaller shrine, etc), but the layout is completely different because, frankly, I just think the layout of the actual cathedral wouldn't have made for a very good dungeon.

As a curiosity, here is a comparison between the original photos of the cathedral vs. the edits I made for the module (some more heavily edited than others, as you can see)

There are actually A LOT of cool fantasy-dungeon-looking places inside the cathedral complex that I wanted to include pics of in the module, but sadly couldn't find any good pics of them that were licensed under any Creative Commons or public domain license, such as:

Anyway I tink the Zipaquirá Salt Cathedral is peak "I don't like catholicism but they kinda went off with the asesthetics" for me.

Masterlist

Princess Amentia of Downland (Queen in 4Kids dub), first appearing S2E4, is the ruler of a small kingdom of people called Trog (which I have a few problems about that we’ll talk on later). She is a dominant, perfectionist that falls madly in love with Brandon, Stella’s boyfriend. She serves as a minor conflict and minor ally to the Winx against Darkar. And while I think Amentia is a unique character that should’ve been explored more, she is also written off as a pitch poor portrayal of women in positions of power and borders on racist stereotypes. It’s unfortunate that I’ve yet to see any posts or articles talking about the inappropriate portrayal of her character and her people.

Not only is she a powerful ruler, she is also an impressive warrior, and so are many of her people. Despite their impressive nature, she and her soldiers are written as brainless brutes. Especially the soldiers. This is a common portrayal of unfortunately several brown people, but especially Indians & Arabians (also Natives, with how they’re written as savage and uncivilized) All of these cultures are stereotyped as being controlling, the same way Princess Amentia is. But I specifically want to talk about her being a woman in a position of power first.

In the world of Winx we don’t often get female rulers, which is strange as the Magic Realm has various societies and cultures but for some reason they’re all Kingdoms? Another rant for another day. But my point still stands, she is, other than the Queen of the Earth fairies, the only female ruler and indisputably the only female warrior. Yet, she’s controlling and doesn’t understand the idea of consent. She’s selfish, self-centered, and uses her position as a way to, frankly, just be a bitch to everyone. While she has good qualities, like being a strong strategist and, of course, fighter. She’s written so shallowly for the sake of being a low-stake conflict instead of a fully-rounded character. It’s sad to see the only woman in power to be written in such a bitchy way as many women with positional power are viewed.

It’s also gross with the way they solved this conflict by forcing her to fall in love with someone else without her consent nor the work necessary to make a happy couple. I know one of the dubs made it where she realized Sponsus is her soulmate instead of falling in love with him on the spot, but I’ve always hated the soulmate trope because, in this case, it just feels like an easy fix.

Now onto the stereotypes, it was always something I noticed even as a child. It’s clear the Trog is a weird mix of Aztec & Orientalist aesthetics. Amentia wears what looks like a dupatta in her military outfit (a strange contrast to her immodest outfit which goes against the usage of the dupatta). She also wears a bindi or a Tilaka, which personally I think it is more of, which isn’t specifically a problem but helps to prove the Trogs are pulling from Indian asesthetics. Her and the other female Trogs dress in what looks like bellydancing costumes or vaguely Aztec costumes. And while I don’t have a problem with her or the Trogs being inspired by various cultures, the fact that they’re portrayed as savages leaves a sour taste when paired with their outfits being poor, sexualized versions or shallow depictions of real cultures.

Not to mention the forced marriage conflict, is strange. I get using arranged marriages as conflict, this happens in several series, it literally happens multiple times in Winx alone. But it feels downplayed for how uncomfortable Brandon was and for how often Amentia forced herself on him. And while this may be a stretch, it just looks like they’re minimizing female-initiated sexual assault and harassment.

Lastly, the name Trog. This is literally an insult in the english language, it being a shortened version of Troglodyte. It’s already a shitty move to name a species after an insult but to have these stereotypes on top of it, is so much worse.

Amentia deserved to be taken seriously as a character and not a gross interpretation of women in power, her being aggressive and forceful are not what make a powerful woman powerful. She deserved to learn how to fall in love and not to pick a suitor based on looks or her perfectionist ideas. Her people deserved to stand as interesting characters without being stereotypical or shallow. Also it would’ve been great to see her pop up again in later seasons, especially S3. As one of the only kingdoms that doesn’t use magic it would’ve been interesting to see where she stood against Valtor.

There is so much that could’ve been done with her personality and a character in her position, yet they threw them in for low-stake conflict and filler content.

In short, Princess Amentia deserved better.

I will go off on a bit of a tangent here: occasionally, I will wish I had animal traits- now, this was things like digitigrade legs, or claws, etc, and hominid beasts were fascinating to me- I would initially spend hours drawing anthropomorphic animals, crafting their societies and stories.

NOT, distinctly, in the way furries have settled into. I remember being actually quite disappointed and disgusted by the furry asesthetic- too cartoony, too cutesy-no bite, no agression: there is a visceral disgust reaction at the designs that lean to far in that direction. Like Disney animals given human traits. Blegh.

No- I wanted to be a monster. A person- but more terrifying for the animal that echoes.

When I say I wanted animal traits, I mean more if you took an actual animal, set them on two limbs, gave them a savage intelligence, and set them loose. I wanted talons that could rip and tear, I wanted fangs , long enough to sink through skin and flesh. I frequently find myself wishing I had scales or fur- in select places, as armor, or to frame my figure- but true fur, true reptilian scales to add to the menace. Carapace of a crustacean with which to bludgeon an opponent, a desire I had LONG before even the first Mistborn book was published- LOOONG before stormlight came out and ecstatically devoured the concept of the parshendi. I wished the corners of my mouth would pull up the ways wolf’s or a tiger’s do as they snarl, wished I could rend and tear, wished that horns, spikes, or spines grew from my body, for bone spurs strong enough to use as weapons.

My shadow-self and I interact quite a lot, and while sometimes it is like looking in the mirror, confronting that my darker self is still me, or a dark echo of me, at other times I fall into the crystal pool of lost memory and I find a beast staring back at me with cruel, honest eyes- nether white nor yellow but always piercing through the shadows, a beast that knows the taste of blood, the beast that haunts me in my dreams as a taloned hand leaves gouges along the bark of the pine trees that line the forests of my mind. It speaks with a voice of gravel, and breaking branches, and changes shape and form in a way that wraps the darkness around it and moans of malice the way that oak trees moan under heavy winds. It is all about and fangs and dripping jaws that open to speak of savagery, and is rage made manifest. The closest character I can think of to this is Malekith from Elden ring- but the armored malekith at his height, a hound unleashed, a monster in true. And it is still not quite enough. The monster of my darker self bears a dark mane, like a hyena, or maned wolf, grasping hands and a tail that bristles back into the darkness,

What do you do when the bloodlust surges as the muscles of your jaw tighten? When you are caught with a sudden desire to fight that sends blood pumping through the veins of your limbs and causes time to slow? How does one respond when they dream, and all dreams lead to fighting- and some find my teeth driving through throats of man and beast alike?

Someday, I hope I manage to unpack all this.

Si no corresponde, entiendo que no lo publiquen pero es que se me sale por todos lados esto y no tengo con quién fangirlear xDD Salió el nuevo MV de NMIXX y... AL FIIIIN!! Quién más está chillando como enfermo mental por este comeback?! Siento que por fin las chicas de y quienes producen sus canciones se entendieron, coordinaron, funcionaron perfecto, besito para ellos!(? No es por desmerecer las canciones anteriores, TANK por ejemplo era una muuuy buena canción que, no sé si se aprovechó tanto pero las demás, mmh, en mi opinión no las ayudaron a brillar tanto. Esta canción tiene todo lo que necesitan para destacar entre el resto de los grupos de la generación. Gente, LOS VOCALES, NMIXX se caracteriza por los vocales y acá está la prueba de que estas mujeres tienen un talento que se desborda. Aplausos de pié para ellas, para JYP que se dio cuenta, bravo bravo aldñlsakd y para los compositores porque esto no es un diez, es un 1000!!! Listo, gracias por el espacio :3

Me he ido rauda y veloz a escuchar la canción para dar mi opinión y creo que me ha gustado, aunque no sé si me ha encantado (? teniendo en cuenta que creo que fui parte del 1% de la población que me gustó O.O a la primera escucha no sé dónde me deja eso. Eso sí, ¡las asesthetics si me han gustado muchísimo!

También coincido en que NMIXX tiene una de las mejores vocal line de esta gen :))
