It’s 5:39 pm
But it's a hour behind on your side of the world
It’s 4:39 pm
And I find myself alone tonight
I walk the streets of new york and it's not the same without you here
With you
By my side
I wish I could hug you again
Get makeup all over your shirt because i keep smelling you
I try to capture traces of you
I'm like a dog sniffing it’s owners clothes
Desperate to find out where you’ve been
Im homesick
And I find myself alone tonight
nighttime just feels so empty without you here
When i listen to the wind
All i hear is traces of your laughter
But I'm never really alone, am I ?
You’re with me wherever i go
I know the sun because she knows your name
I know the color yellow
I know the stars
I know slum village
Mac Ayres
Asal Hazel
I know them because they all lead back to you.
It’s 5:40 pm
But you’re an hour behind
It’s 4:40 pm
I’m never really alone, am i?

Asal Hazel grew up in Los Angeles, CA. Her mom Shideh and Dad Siamak, both of Persian descent. Asal speaks both English and Farsi. She has two younger sisters- Sadaf with a 4 year age difference and Sayeh,13 years. Asal attended a performing arts middle school called Milikan, before then attending a performing arts high school, CHAMPS Charter High. Despite this, Asal was described as reserved throughout these years and did not participate in offered performing arts courses. Additionally, her family was not keen on the idea of her pursuing music as it is not traditionally encouraged in young women of Persian/Jewish culture. Once Asal’s parents split up in 2010, followed by financial struggles and messy divorce details, Asal began exploring the idea of pursuing music. Growing and learning alongside artists such as Anderson Paak and the Free Nationals, MNDSGN, Knxwledge, and so on, she was looking for a way to express her inner frustration as a woman coming from a closed-minded background and into a judgmental career. “I love pop music so much. Specifically pop-r&b. But I didn’t want to come right out with that, I felt like I had to prove something to my family and culture first.” She goes on to say she wanted to prove a point about what women are capable of and that she didn’t have to “sell out” right off the bat to do it. With the independant release of her first project, a ‘tape’ titled Like Water in 2018, she did just that. “I had no idea what I was doing, I didn't promote my project at all and it even took me forever just to put it up, everyone thought I was crazy.” Her track UTMT with it’s almost painfully nostalgic feeling, she’d made the difference she seeked to make and felt heard. Touching messages of support flooded her socials as she shared them publicly. “That was my favorite one. Probably always will be. Never ask me why haha. That and Lust ”. About a year after the project release, some Ariana Grande Fans attempted to pass off a clip of Lust as an Ariana Grande Snippet titled ‘You’ on Twitter, Instagram, and Youtube. “I had to literally go correct people and explain that that’s me and mine... Most bizarre experience. You can still see so much confusion in the comments under Lust on Youtube.”
To this day, Asal has written every word of her music. “I didn’t have anyone to go to or I might’ve.” She describes recently going through being courted by an Interscope JV record label and having to turn it down when in talks of a deal because it wasn't favorable for an artist/entertainer who is also a lyricist. She is still friends and fans of the team and is exploring writing with them as well as writing with and for other writers/artists. “I’ll have some other writers on these next songs and project it won’t be only me anymore.” We are waiting idly for that and some fashion work she’s involved in. Find her everywhere including Spotify, Apple, Bandcamp, IG, Twitter, Youtube, Patreon, etc.!
