It turns out that I'm pretty foolhardy, so here we have a fleshed-out critique of PJO! Percy:

Characterization:

Let's start with his flaws. As I've mentioned. before, PJO!Percy has a rather small set of flaws which are quite inconsistent in nature, or played for shits and giggles.

For eg- his 'silliness' is just a gag. He's quite practical in normal (that's a relative term) situations. Similarly his recklessness is invoked largely to move the plot along. Percy, in general, is actually really calculating, and a good planner. As for the fatal flaw, even the diehard Percy stans would agree it was an informed flaw for telling', and never quite made it to 'show'. The protagonist having actual flaws? Ho!that's writer's sin. /s

Arc & Development:-

When speaking of development, it's vital to remember that many factors like impact and weightage need to be considered. Anyways, development can occur in 2 main ways: (This is a very simplified explanation of course)

Intrinsic- A change in core personality traits.

Extrinsic- A change in worldview, goals, ambitions etc.

Both of these types tend to go hand-in-hand & influence each other.

The intrinsic part is easy to argue- Percy, at his core, does not ot show a change proportionate to his role as the primary lead. Changes in his personality are rather imperceptible. He remains rather static in this regard with regards to the page time & scope he had, which is important context.

As for the extrinsic part, things become a little moce tricky, as we have a semblance of extrinsic development:

You could argue that "All titans are not bad" is an important shift. On paper, certainly. But the way it was executed ruins a lot more than it fixes. (One word: Calypso.) Honestly, even if we ignore all my mythological context (not recommended) her interaction with percy was certainly very manipulative and a had an unnerving undertone to it.

"Oh, I supported the Titans because they were family" doesn't quite cut it, Calypso.

Even if we overlook this issue, I believe Percy's new found shift in world view should've had a greater focus. It should've influenced his thoughts(for example: made him wonder if he was acting for the greater good, or the lesser evil) & since that doesn't happen, this part seems anti climatic.

Now, moving on to the character arc analysis, i'd like to start with the opinion that his arc was more similar to wish-fulfilment than anything. I chalk this up to the opinion that his development was weak; to ensure that a character arc is noteworthy, development is very important.

To clarify this let's take a look at Meg & lester from ToA:On a surface level, Both of them mirror Percy's 'underdog to hero' journey. Yet the pivotal difference between the three is that the former two receive development leaps and bounds more than PJO!Percy, which is proportionate to their role in the narrative as protagonists.

Conflict of Interest:

I think that the overarching reason as to why Percy's character fell short is a conflict of interest between PJO's narrative, & Percy's existence as a character of his own. In my opinion the narrative's purpose (and Rick's wish) was to create of the perfect self-insert, a vessel so well- crafted that the reader feels the story in more than one way. As a result, Percy becomes a glorious self-isert - a charming hero, a journey of wish-fulfilment. Unfortunately, his own character remains in the background, with countable moments of true depth. A good vessel, after all, needs to be atleast somewhat hollow for use (i.e self-projection)

Meeting Barney instead of Billy didn't change Rhea'n'Dimitri's mindset - especially since we're talking about events that happened in the past (Dimitri saving Dedue and Rhea saving Catherine) so...

Once again, the best framing ever : What the fuck Claude is talking about in VW? Rhea and Dimitri - the CoS and the Kingdom already had "values that don't exclude anyone for being different".

So when Claude treats hot water as a new discovery and wishes to bring it the Fodlan... Faerghus and Garreg Mach already had saunas and therms.

Of course, Billy being the silent protagonist they are cannot tell Claude those values aren't anything "new" save for, maybe in Adrestia/Leicester and his wish to see Fodlan and Almyra work together or hand in hand needs more "effort" on Almyra's part than, say, on Fodlan's.

And while it could only be surmised in FE16 that the CoS and the Kingdom (when it's not retaliating for regicide nor listening to xenophobic morons) aren't "excluding anyone for being different" because, well, Cyril, Shamir, and Dedue existed in FE16 - Nopes basically spells out that, well, Claude's so called "new" values were... not "new" at all.

I can't help but wonder what would a VW route look like, if Dimitri'n'Rhea were still alive - what would Claude's reasoning for "changing" Fodlan be if Dimitri'n'Rhea were around? Would they be Zahrofl'd like Dimitro to allow Claude to get a point?

I think I am one of the few yamachi shippers who just doesn't care for Sanan. His route in the game has a lot of lore that I enjoy, but I overall consider it my least favorite. It has a lot of tropes I don't like, and although Sanan is a character I enjoy as an antagonist, I don't really care for him as a romantic interest.

people do correctly identify that laios is autistic fairly often but a lot of the reasoning begins and ends with his special interest and social difficulties, but honestly it goes far deeper into the build of his character than just those two things

his pain tolerance is wildly inconsistent, unable to tolerate a drop of hot oil (or any heat) but able to shrug off both his leg being bitten off and it being reattached

hes sensory seeking in the extreme. he rubs the bat bones against his face, pets and fluffs the shapeshifter tail.

his desire to eat monsters comes from three very autistic places. 1) the rules for why monsters are not okay to eat but animals are are arbitrary to him so he cannot follow them easily: he cannot understand the 'feelings' argument others make. 2) this too is a sensory seeking behavior. he wants to experience these new things, new flavors and new textures. 3) it completes his knowledge of the monster in question to also have data on its edibility. because he cannot draw that arbitrary line around all monsters, he wants to evaluate them case-by-case and see if real patterns emerge. butchering and eating the monsters improves his knowledge of them greatly and highlights their importance in their ecosystem, as well as making him a part of that same ecosystem

he cannot emote the way others expect him to. he compartmentalizes his feelings (to an unhealthy degree) because he needs a pragmatic solution. so as long as there is a problem to solve, that matters far more than evaluating his emotions and allowing himself to experience them. while this is also a coping mechanism for ptsd, it is a trait found in many autistic people regardless of trauma, as we have trouble sorting the feelings we have and often need time to think about what we feel, so it becomes easier to simply not do it and pretend we dont need to. laios emotions certainly affect him, with or without his processing them, but others do not see what they expect to see and thus dismiss that he is feeling what they would feel

he is incredibly gifted with pattern recognition, observation, and analysis within realms he understands. to understand subjects that dont come easily to him, he must filter them through his established schema (his special interest--this is why they are so special! they help us sort the world). when he isnt sure about the social cues and details hes observed in the shapeshifter arc, he filters it through the lens he understands best: monsters. he was making correct observations about his friends all along, but he could not be confident in that the way he was about their behavior when it came to his interest (chilchucks caution, senshis passions, and marcilles carelessness)

Chuuya's reaction to Dazai getting hurt during the Lovecraft fight has always been so interesting to me...

Because it's the kind of worry you'd never expect from a character as gruff as Chuuya, who had displayed nothing but hostility towards Dazai so far. Usually, characters that are labelled as "angry" or "anger issues" (which Chuuya is much more complex than that but you get my point) act more as a tsundere type of way when the one they "don't care about" gets hurt. And show their care in very, very subtle ways (ex. their eyes widen, their mouth parts and closes again, etc) before putting up their front once more.

Chuuya, however, is open, and vocal about it. His worry is clear not only to us, but to Dazai himself, the one he shouldn't be displaying the concern to (as per the cliche). Shouldn't it be some sort of secret that Chuuya does care? Isn't that what skk's dynamic has been shaping up to be until now?

I'm telling you- the way my mind blanked when Chuuya just casually.... showed concern not once, but twice, was a sight to see.

Besides, the context makes it much more confusing, because Dazai isn't some rookie, and Chuuya knows that more than anybody. He was the youngest executive in Port Mafia's history, of course he can handle a hit or two. Of course he'd seen him handle a hit or two, sometimes without batting an eye.

Heck, Chuuya himself was hurling Dazai like a ragdoll in their reunion, which was their last meeting. And you could argue that he was going easy on him, but Dazai has mostly withstood the same damage (as far as I could see), and Chuuya was as bitter as ever.

So that kind of contradicts both what we knew of Chuuya so far, and how their dynamic was shaped to be. I mean, that just makes Chuuya a hypocrite, yeah? What makes him care now, all of a sudden? What makes him care at all?

Well, to me, this backasswards reaction implies one (or more) of the following:

- Dazai rarely got physically hurt during their partnership and thus this is an unexpected thing for him to see (during a mission).

- The four years of separation made Chuuya unsure of how much Dazai can withstand physically now. Also the fact that he isn't in the mafia anymore, aka fighting enemy organizations on the weekly, would naturally make Dazai lose his touch in a way, what prompts Chuuya's reaction.

- Dazai getting taken off guard took him off guard which led to panic. Especially since the situation was (momentarily) out of their depth. Seriously wtf even was Lovecraft?

- During the dungeon scene Dazai was an enemy, while in the Lovecraft fight he was as an ally. The difference might be significant to Chuuya.

- This has always been Chuuya's reaction to Dazai getting hurt regardless of the situation.

- "Only I can hurt him like that" ahh logic

- Asagiri was still experimenting with their dynamic and thus there are some inconsistencies.

This scenario didn't play out again (after their reunion) for me to exactly determine which one is more plausible, but it is 100% canon for Chuuya to shamelessly show his concern and run to Dazai to check on him before properly dealing with their opponent, which I find to be such an appealing layer to their dynamic, and a good spin on the type of character he gets stereotyped as.

Bonus: Dazai also becomes a softy when Chuuya's hurt, especially post corruption. Dead Apple alone displays that multiple times.

All in all, Skk are doing a terrible job at maintaining their 'hostile' and 'antagonistic' relationship post their reunion. Freaks.
